Situated on Lake Allatoona, Atlanta Yacht Club has been home to small-boat pleasure and racing sailors for 70 years. From late March to November, our shores are dappled with one-design sailing craft heading out for an afternoon on the water with friends and family. 

Whether they come for friendly competition, sailing classes, or just an opportunity to relax with a day on the lake, what binds our members and families to AYC is their commitment to the sport of sailing and their choice to spend their leisure time in an activity where everyone in the family can “play”.

The Atlanta Yacht Club is home to several active one-design racing fleets. Among those, we are proud to say, the Snipe, Thistle and Y-Flyer fleets are the largest fleets within each of their class organizations.  The fleets host the largest fleet-hosted regatta within their class: Snipe Fleet 330's Halloween Regatta, Thistle Fleet 48's Dixie Regatta, and Y-Flyer Fleet 1's Beers Regatta. We are known for our competitive racing and our hospitality!

Loving the lake life: 6 things to do near Allatoona Lake

Access Atlanta

There’s a lot of Allatoona Lake to love.

When it’s full, the lake, located in northwestern metro Atlanta, covers more than 12,000 acres and has 270 miles of shoreline. With all that coverage, spanning parts of Cobb County and Bartow County, there won’t be a shortage of things you’ll love to do there — from water sports to luxury outings.

Here are just six of the most fun things to do near Lake Allatoona:

Sink your toes in the sand

Just 45 minutes or so from Atlanta, Red Top Mountain State Park is a popular park right at the shores of Allatoona Lake. And, it has a sand beach! It’s nestled in a cove and surrounded by trees. Soak in the sun on shore or bring your own boat. Some say the beach reminds them of the set for childhood favorite Gilligan’s Island. The park provides other fun things to do near Allatoona Lake, including hiking, star gazing, camping and kayaking.

Stay in a lakeside mansion

While the shores of Allatoona Lake are packed with affordable, diverse camping options , sometimes it’s fun to go upscale. The Victorian Lake Allatoona Inn was built in 1893 and has been lovingly restored. It features wraparound porches, private decks and 16 acres with horses.

Dine lakeside, or nearby

Open seven days a week starting in April and running through September, Sunset Grille (1001 Victoria Landing Drive, Woodstock) is right on Allatoona Lake. It serves drinks, lunch and dinner on the deck and occasionally has live music on the weekends. The seafood, burgers and po’ boys are all popular there.

If it’s offseason, consider dining in the Woodstock community of Towne Lake, 8 or 9 miles from the heart of Allatoona Lake. One standout is Tuscany (250 Cinema View, Woodstock, GA 30189). The traditional Italian American specialties include luscious veal gorgonzola. If you are sticking with a lake theme, try the calamari piccata or linguine and clams.

Or indulge in a sushi whim at Towne Lake’s Izumi Asian Bistro (2035 Towne Lake Pkwy #150, Woodstock, GA 30189). It features lots of intriguing sushi rolls, specials like steamed Chilean sea bass and the standard wok items including Kung Pao with a choice of meat and heat.

Join a boat club

Another luxury offering among the many fun things to do near Lake Allatoona: a members-only boat club that caters to beginners and old hands alike. Here’s how it works: you pay a flat membership fee, dues and fuel and get unlimited access to the pontoons, tri-toons, ski boats and wakeboard boats Suntex operates on Allatoona Lake. Members also have their insurance covered and unlimited use of the club’s water toys, from wakeboards to tubes and skis. Membership levels range from weekday access with three active reservations at any time on up to corporate memberships for six members and holiday and weekend access. If you’re the type to go all in with your leisure activities, this could be for you!

Take a historic hike at Allatoona Pass

Ponder history and marvel at how close this gruesome battle was to today’s suburbia at the Allatoona Pass Battlefield . Of the 5,301 men engaged in the battle, 1,603 were reported killed, wounded or missing at its end. Much of the battlefield is unchanged, and a railroad tunnel cut through solid rock, two preserved earth forts and a classic antebellum plantation house are all visible within a short, family-friendly hike . The walk also offers fine views of Allatoona Lake. It’s quite close to Red Top Mountain State Park, too, so the family can play in the woods after the hike.

Atlanta Yacht Club Hosting US Sailing Championship In Acworth

Friday begins three days of racing on lake allatoona in acworth, as some of the best crews around the nation compete for a championship..

ACWORTH, GA -- Racing gets underway Friday at US Sailing’s Championship of Champions, hosted by the Atlanta Yacht Club in Acworth. The sailing regatta invites National, North American, and World Champions to compete against each other over three days of racing on Lake Allatoona. This year’s fleet consists of 17 teams from all over the country, including Georgia.

A US Sailing National Championship event, the Championship of Champions pits world, North American or national class champions from a wide array of one-design classes in a boat that is unknown to many and typically on a body of water with challenging, and sometimes bewildering conditions. It’s a formula intended to upset the status quo, and often does.

In total, this year’s fleet features 11 national champions, three North American champions and one world champion. Besides Ingham there are two other past champions: Bill Draheim (Royse City, Texas), who won in 2002, and Brian Keane (Weston, Mass.), the 2013 champion.

The Atlanta Yacht Club founded Y-Flyer Fleet #1 in 1952 and is well represented in the fleet with five sailors: Bryce Dryden (Kennesaw, Ga.), the 2018 Y-Flyer National Champion, Tarasa Davis (Atlanta, Ga.), the 2018 Snipe Women’s National Champion, and Lucy Spearman (Atlanta, Ga.), the 2018 Y-Flyer Junior National Champion, are all skippers.

Crews include Shelby Hatcher (Woodstock, Ga.), a multiple winner of the Y-Flyer Junior and Women’s National championships who’ll race with Davis, and Sammy Hodges (Musella, Ga.), crew for Spearman. Hodges is the 28-year-old great grandson of E.O. “Smitty” Smithfield, a founding member of Atlanta Yacht Club and Y-Flyer Fleet #1.

Racing will be held on Lake Allatoona, an 18-square-mile lake created and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The regatta concludes Sunday, Oct. 21.

Sailing Lessons at Atlanta Yacht Club (Lake Allatoona)

I have attached an email from the sailing instructor at the AYC. The club will be offering lessons again this year. I took them last year and it was definitely fun and a change of pace. (Don't have to worry if there's enough wind for a change.) It's a great deal, and I think they will probably be offering lessons in the summer as well. Anyway, check it out.

Hello, Everyone: Just wanted to say "hi" from snowy mtns of Colorado---- I will finish up at Keystone Resort....around Easter and be heading back to Atlanta and AYC about mid-April. We will begin our Adult Sailing Course in late April or first of May. There will be four classes in this session: Sunday evenings from around 5:30 til 8:30 the first evening----then will start about 5:00 and continue til about 9:00 thereafter. Course will be taught primarily using our AYC Sunfish Fleet.....each student will sail his/her 'own' boat.... Will do some classroom videos (U.S. Sailing tapes) along with short chalk talks and lots of student participation.....We will be On the Water as much as possible.....the "learning by doing" theory....vis a vis Dr. Kurt Hahn, founder of Outward Bound.... (I just had to throw that in!)... You must be a good swimmer to participate, and each person will wear a life jacket (PFD) while on the water.

The cost will be $95 for the entire session----Please go to the Atlantayachtclub.org website and review the registration forms, including the following: Medical, Liability Release form, and the "I'll behave/no drugs etc form". Please download the forms and complete and initial and sign all forms. I will have you mail them to me with your check (payable to AYC Junior Training) at a later date.
