What to expect when visiting Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is an ancient walled city dubbed the “Pearl of the Adriatic.” It will enchant you with its baroque architecture and limestone streets, backdropped by the ever-glistening Adriatic. This red-roofed city has a special charm that sets it apart from all other Croatian cities.

Just walking around the Old Town is probably already the best thing to do in Dubrovnik . And if you’re a fan of the hit TV series  Game of Thrones,  you’ll find many of its streets familiar. Dubrovnik was the main location for the show’s King’s Landing, including the alley where they shot Cersei’s iconic walk of shame!

3 ways to get from Hvar to Dubrovnik

Where to stay in dubrovnik.

Still looking for accommodation? Don't forget to check out our favourite places to stay in Dubrovnik at the bottom of this page.

Hvar to Dubrovnik by Ferry

Taking a direct ferry is the fastest way to get from Hvar to Dubrovnik. Travel time is around 3h 15m - 3h 50m.

There are three ferry companies on this route. Kapetan Luka and TP Line are available only from April to October, while Jadrolinija runs from July to September. If you’re travelling outside these months, you can try the indirect ferry via Drvenik or Split .

The cheapest ferry for the Hvar to Dubrovnik route is the Jadrolinija catamaran that costs €37 ($34). However, this ferry arrives in Dubrovnik at night.

If you want to get to Dubrovnik early enough to start exploring, you can take the earliest ferry trip with Kapetan Luka. For this option, though, fares are more expensive at €45 ($42). The TP Line ferry also has a convenient schedule for a cheaper price.

Departure and arrival station

The ferries depart from the Harbour of Hvar in Hvar Town. This port is close to several hotels and establishments in the area.

You will arrive at Dubrovnik Ferry Terminal , also in the town centre, which is about 4 km north of the Old Town in Dubrovnik.

Ferry schedule from Hvar to Dubrovnik

We suggest booking your ticket in advance, especially during summer, to secure a seat.

Hvar to Dubrovnik by Car Ferry via Drvenik

If you want to travel by car, you need to drive all the way to Sucuraj, located at the other end of Hvar island. There are no direct car ferries from Hvar town to Dubrovnik.

This route is also possible for foot passengers since the car ferry runs all year round. But note that costs would be higher as there is no public transportation from Hvar town to Sucuraj.

Step 1: Hvar to Sucuraj by Car

Car ferries are available at Sucuraj Ferry Terminal . Sucuraj is a small town on the eastern end of Hvar island. It is also the nearest town on the island to Drvenik, from where you’ll drive the rest of the way to Dubrovnik.

If you’re coming from Hvar town, the drive to Sucuraj through the D116 road takes 1.5 hours.

Note that this route can be quite expensive for foot passengers. There are no buses available from Hvar town to Sucuraj, so you need to take a taxi with rates from €19.60 ($18.10).

Step 2: Sucuraj to Drvenik by Car Ferry

Given the close distance between Sucuraj and Drvenik, there are several ferry departures from morning to night all year round. From November to April, there are fewer departures, around six trips daily.

A ferry ticket costs €2.20 ($2) per person. For vehicles, rates start from €13 ($12). You can get to Drvenik in just around 35 minutes.

You can check the full schedule and rates for other types of vehicles on the Jadrolinija website.

Step 3: Drvenik to Dubrovnik by Car or Bus

The ferry from Sucuraj arrives at Drvenik Ferry Port . This port is about 126 km away from Dubrovnik city centre, and the drive through the D8 coastal road is about 2h 25m - 2h 45m.

For foot passengers, you need to walk about 10 minutes to the nearest bus stop from the port. There are only a few bus departures daily, so best to plan your ferry trip accordingly.

Bus tickets start from €15 ($13.90). You will be dropped off at Dubrovnik bus station near the port.

Tickets are available at the terminal, but you can also book them in advance through GetByBus .

If you’re a foot passenger who has run out of direct ferry tickets from Hvar to Dubrovnik or travelling during the low season, we suggest taking the route via Split to save on costs.

Hvar to Dubrovnik by Ferry via Split

Another option is to take a ferry from Hvar to Split, where several buses to Dubrovnik are available. This option has the longest travel time of around 4h 35m - 6h 10m.

Combined fares for the ferry and bus are about €37 ($34), which costs almost the same as the direct ferry.

Step 1: Hvar to Split by Catamaran

The Hvar to Split route is a popular route, especially during the summer season (June to September). This is why there are three ferry companies on this route with several ferry departures throughout the day.

Outside the summer season, only Kapetan Luka and Jadrolinija ferries are available, with only one or two departures daily.

Ferry tickets start from €16.40 ($15.10) for the ferry ride that takes 1 hour.

If you’re staying in Stari Grad or Jelsa, you can also take a ferry from there instead of going to Hvar Harbour in town. All ferries arrive at Port of Split in the town centre.

Step 2: Split to Dubrovnik by Bus

The Split Central Bus Station is conveniently located just outside the port, so you can immediately transfer to a bus going to Dubrovnik.

There are also several bus departures throughout the day, giving you a lot of options. Travel time by bus is about 3h 35m - 5h 10m, and tickets cost around €21 ($19.30).

Note: While most buses take the route over the Peljesac Bridge, there is also a route via Neum Corridor . If your bus takes this route, you need to have a multiple entry visa for the Schengen zone. Read our page about Split to Dubrovnik for more information.

Our favourite places to stay in Dubrovnik

Important: Tourism in Croatia is very seasonal. Much of the available accommodation in Croatia is fully booked in the summer, but many sites are closed in the winter months. With July and August being the peak season, rates can rise 3 times as high as compared the low season or shoulder months. Dubrovnik to Hvar: By Car, Ferry, Bus & Private Boat

Planning a trip from Dubrovnik to Hvar? Then you’re definitely in the right place because we’ve got all the info you need to prepare for this trip!

Hvar is one of Croatia’s most popular Adriatic islands, and there are several ways to reach it. Most of the main ports in Croatia offer fast ferries and catamarans to this island, so there are numerous options for the average foot passenger. It’s a bit trickier for those traveling by car, but don’t worry – we’ll tell you all you need to know about traveling from Dubrovnik to Hvar!

Dubrovnik to Hvar by Passenger Ferry

The best and quickest way to travel from Dubrovnik to Hvar for foot passengers is by boat, but the route doesn’t operate year-round. There are boat transfers between Dubrovnik and Hvar Island from April to October, with two departures per day during peak season and just one ferry departure per day in the off-season.

The ferries depart from Dubrovnik at 7 AM and 4:30 PM. The duration of the journey is between three and three and a half hours, while ticket prices range between 210 and 310 Kunas.

The Jadrolinija ferry is cheaper and takes longer, while the catamaran operated by Kapetan Luka costs more and arrives 20 minutes earlier. It’s worth noting that there are no car ferries that travel between Dubrovnik and Hvar, so this route is an option only for foot passengers.

Also, the Jadrolinija ferry stops at Mljet and Korcula before arriving at Hvar town, which is why the journey takes a bit longer.

In the off-season, there is just one transfer per day and that ferry departs at 4:30 PM. It’s a catamaran operated by Kapetan Luka company, and ticket prices start at 41 Euros (310 Kunas).

The boat transfer is a bit pricey, but it’s by far the most convenient way of traveling for those without a car. It’s also the only direct route from Dubrovnik to Hvar town – in case you are planning to stay in a different town on the island, you will need to travel by bus through Hvar Island.

On top of that, it’s actually the cheapest option, especially if you take the cheaper Jadrolinija ferry. Car rental alone is more than the ferry ticket, plus you would still need to pay for car ferry tickets. Even bus travel is more expensive since it includes at least one ferry and two bus tickets.

FIND FERRY PRICES AND OPTIONS

Check prices here, dubrovnik to hvar by car ferry.

There are two ways to reach Hvar from Dubrovnik via car ferry. The quickest way is to drive to Drvenik, which is some 124 kilometers away from Dubrovnik. It takes about 2 hours to cover that distance, but it does include a border crossing through Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Long queues and border delays are frequent during the high tourist season, so it’s best to travel at night or very early in the morning to avoid the crowds. One thing worth noting is that the queue for EU passengers moves a bit faster than the one for Bosnian citizens, but the wait times can still exceed two hours during the high season.

The car ferry from Drvenik to Sucuraj is frequent in the off-season with six ferry transfers per day. That goes up to 11 car ferries per day in the peak season, and there’s pretty much one every hour or so. The car ferry duration is only about half an hour, and the ferry ticket prices are about 108 Kunas for cars and 16 Kunas for foot passengers.

Those are prices for the peak season, and it’s worth noting that ferry tickets are even cheaper in the off-season. The only ferry company that operates this route is Jadrolinija.

One thing to keep in mind is that this ferry arrives in Sucuraj, which is on the far eastern side of the Hvar Island. If you’re trying to travel to Hvar town, you’ll still need to drive for about an hour and a half to cover the 80-kilometer distance between the two towns.

The other Hvar ferry you can catch departs from the ferry port in Split. This is a much longer route since you need to drive for about three hours from Dubrovnik to Split, and then it’s a two-hour ferry ride from Split to Stari Grad port on Hvar Island. It’s certainly not the quickest or the most convenient way of traveling from Dubrovnik to Hvar, but it’s an option that exists and it’s worth mentioning.

The longer route makes sense if you want to visit Trogir or Split, and maybe explore a few of the other towns or even a national park in Dalmatia.

It’s worth noting that renting a car is by far the most convenient way of traveling from Dubrovnik to Hvar. Although you don’t have too many transport options, there are even fewer options for those traveling on foot. Renting a car gives you a bit more flexibility, and it makes it easier to get around Hvar Island.

Dubrovnik to Hvar by Bus

It is possible to travel from Dubrovnik to Hvar by bus and ferry, but it’s important to note that there are no direct buses to Hvar Island from Dubrovnik. The closest you can get is to Vela Luka on Korcula Island, from where you take a ferry to Hvar .

There are several buses from Dubrovnik to Vela Luka on Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays. It’s not noted whether they stop in other towns on the island, but it’s safe to assume they do – this is important because there are more ferry operators in Korcula town than in Vela Luka.

There are also summer catamarans that depart from both towns on the island for Hvar, and there’s public transport on the island that can help you travel from one town to another.

In addition to that, it’s also possible to travel from Dubrovnik to Drvenik by bus. The bus duration is a little less than three hours, and tickets cost some 100 Kunas. From Drvenik, you can catch a ferry to Sucuraj on Hvar Island, and from there you can take public transport to any town on the island.

It’s worth noting that public transportation exists on Hvar island, but there’s very limited information available about it online. Phone numbers of the main bus stations on the island are available online, so it is possible to call them up and ask for information about ticket prices and bus departures.

Also, it’s not possible to buy tickets online. They are purchased from the driver on the spot, so there’s no way to guarantee that you will have a spot on the bus.

Dubrovnik to Hvar by Private Boat Transfer

Private boat transfers are available to most islands in the Adriatic Sea, and they’re a great option if you can afford them. There are private transfers from Dubrovnik to Hvar and they start at around 1950 Euros for the boat.

This is for the transfers by SeaYou company , and they don’t specify how many passengers they can accommodate on this boat. Also, it’s important to note that the listed price is not definitive, and you still need to send an inquiry to the company to get more information on exact prices.

Private transfers are by far the most convenient and luxurious way of traveling from Dubrovnik to Hvar. You’ll be picked up where it suits you best and dropped off wherever you want. In the meantime, you’re riding on the Adriatic Sea in a boat with a luxury cabin, soaking in the sun and wanting for nothing.

However, this is also the most expensive way of traveling between the two towns, and it’s an option only for those with deeper pockets. The cost of a private transfer is enough to cover a week in either of these towns for a family of four, so unless you’ve got money to burn, it doesn’t make much sense to arrange for a private boat transfer.

Another company you should check out is Hvar Tours . They offer speedboat transfers from Dubrovnik to Hvar and other nearby islands, and they’re a bit more affordable than SeaYou. The prices start at 1250 Euros for a speedboat that can carry up to four people, up to 2250 Euros for a boat for 14 people – when you split the costs, that’s actually not too bad.

The cost of fuel and a skipper is included in the price of the transfer and passengers will also get free drinks and car transfers from wherever they are to the speedboat port and this includes transfer from Dubrovnik airport.

The duration of private transfers is about three and a half hours door-to-door, so it’s not much faster than the ferries and catamarans you can take for a fraction of the price. It’s a much more luxurious way of traveling, but if you’re trying to be efficient and fiscally responsible, you’re better off just buying tickets for one of the existing ferries and catamarans that operate on this route.

Dubrovnik to Hvar

How to get from Dubrovnik to Hvar?

If you are a foot passenger , there is a fast ferry catamaran that departs from April to October daily from Dubrovnik ferry terminal to Hvar town on Hvar island. This is the only direct travel option, the most convenient and fastest way to reach Hvar from Dubrovnik. The alternative is several indirect bus and ferry routes, all in operation all year round. If you are driving and plan to use a car ferry, there are  no direct car ferries  between Dubrovnik and Hvar. You will have to drive along the coast and across the  Peljesac Bridge  all the way to Drvenik and from there to cross by car ferry to Sucuraj at Hvar island.

4 Ways to get from Dubrovnik to Hvar

Interior seating and lovely views from the fast ferry catamaran sailing from Dubrovnik to Hvar island

The distance between Dubrovnik and Hvar across the sea is 150 km (or 81 nautical miles). The easiest and most pleasant way to travel is by fast passenger ferry (catamaran). Here are the details:

Dubrovnik to Hvar by Foot Passenger Ferry (Catamaran)

Schedules, tickets, booking.

Departures*: High season: April (June) to (September) October

Ferry companies that run passenger ferries from Dubrovnik to Hvar are Krilo (Kapetan Luka), TP Line, and Jadrolinija. All depart ferries from the same spot in  the ferry terminal in Dubrovnik  (check  map  and photo below) and arrive in the Hvar Town port. For detailed ferry timetables consult croatiaferries.com

Important Note:

Dubrovnik Hotels - Book Now!

In case of stormy weather, the catamaran (fast passenger ferries) is not sailing. In such circumstances, you have to travel across the mainland, by bus or private transfer to Drvenik and cross by car ferry to the island (see more details below)

Driving from Dubrovnik to Hvar (Car Ferry)

There are  no direct car ferries  connecting Dubrovnik and Hvar. If you are driving, you have the following options (check the map below):

  • Step 1 : Drive from Dubrovnik to Ston (Doli) via roads D8 and D414 road to Brijesta
  • Step 2 : Cross  Peljesac Bridge  to Komarna
  • Step 3:  Drive to Drvenik either via E65, along the coast
  • Step 4: Cross by car ferry from Drvenik to Sucuraj (Hvar island)
  • Step 5: Drive from Sucuraj to Hvar town

By this shortest and the fastest driving route, you can reach Hvar town from Dubrovnik in 3.5 hours. Traveling on this route your driving time will be:

Driving tip

Due to Peljesac Bridge roadworks, for time being, the Ston to the Prapratno crossroads section of the route (about 8 km) may take a bit longer than usual.

Dubrovnik to Hvar by Bus

If you prefer to travel by bus, you can get a bus to Drvenik several times per day. Bus departs from Dubrovnik’s bus terminal and drives to Drvenik ferry port, from where you will take a car ferry to cross to the island. Buses are fairly frequent in tourist season, while out of season, there are just a couple of buses per day. It takes about 2.5 hours to reach Drvenik. The current ticket cost is about 18 Euros one way ( see timetable and prices )

By Taxi, Uber, or Private Car Transfer

A  taxi ride between Dubrovnik and Hvar  lasts about 3.5 hours including crossing the Peljesac bridge and ferry crossing from Drvenik to Hvar (Sucuraj). The current price quoted to me is 290 Euros. The quote from UBER is 260 Euros (see photo/map below). This is a very good and convenient travel option if 3 to 4 people travel together and share the costs of the taxi.

The above map of how to get to Hvar island is showing all transportation options including the car ferry route as well as the driving and bus routes. As you can see on the above map, driving is not as convenient as day-tripping  by ferry – see map here .

Popular routes: Split to Dubrovnik , Dubrovnik to Split , Hvar to Dubrovnik , Dubrovnik to Hvar

  • Can I take a bike or dog on a fast ferry? Yes, if you are traveling by bicycle you can take your bike on the foot passenger ferry. The same applies to dogs and other pets. Advanced booking is recommended as bike/pet spaces are limited.
  • Do I need a car in these two places? In Dubrovnik, you most probably do not need a car, as public transport is very good. In Hvar, you may need a car if you plan to explore the island as public transport is not frequent.

Dubrovnik to Hvar Day trip

Can you do a day trip from Dubrovnik to Hvar?  Yes, you can. Visiting Hvar for a day trip is pretty easy. From June to September, there is a daily fast ferry that is convenient for such a trip. Out of this period, you can still do it, however, it takes a bit of planning.

Hvar Town

Here are my travel tips and recommendations for this journey:

June to September Day Trip

If you are visiting Dubrovnik from  June to September , take a fast ferry to Hvar Island and back.  Here are the details:

  • depart @ 7:00 from Dubrovnik ( Gruz ), arrive in  Hvar  Town at 10:30
  • spend a day in Hvar
  • return @ 17:55 from Hvar Town, arrive back in Dubrovnik at 21:25

At present, this ferry is run by Jadrolinija. It  cost 420 HRK (62 US Dollars / 56 Euro ) for a return trip and you can book the tickets at its website.

You will depart from Dubrovnik early morning and come back in the evening. It will be a long day but very much worth it.

The ferry is very comfortable, air-conditioned has comfortable seats and you will enjoy lovely views. On your way, you will also see through the windows  Elafiti Archipelago ,  Mljet Island ,  Korcula Island , and the  Old Town .

Getting to Hvar for a day by fast ferry

Out-of-season options

If you are visiting in other periods than June to September, which is here considered an out-of-season period, here are the options:

Self-Drive to Hvar island from Dubrovnik

You can choose to drive to Hvar. It takes about 4 1/2 hours each way (about 200 km) and includes crossing the border with Bosnia (time-consuming) and taking a car ferry from Drvenik to Sucuraj (Hvar). Dubrovnik to Drvenik is 125 km (about 2 hrs drive) + border crossing + ferry crossing it takes about 4 1/2 hrs.

Bus to Hvar island from Dubrovnik

In theory yes. Out of season, you can get a bus from Dubrovnik to Drvenik, change there to a ferry to Sucuraj on Hvar island, and a further bus from Sucuraj to Hvar Town. However, it is also a time-consuming option and hardly viable for a successful day trip even in a full season.

Getting to ferry for Hvar day trip

Book in advance, public transport or self-drive trip?

An alternative to public transport that I already mentioned is  private tours or private speedboat tours . That however depends on  the weather . For most of the days in the summertime, the weather is fine, but with the weather, you never know. Relying solely on a private speed boat trip can be risky.

For a day trip to Hvar, there are a few things to bear in mind:

  • Yes,  book in advance  any tickets especially for June to September period
  • Try to stick with visiting Hvar Town only. Avoid getting to other places on the island as local buses are not very frequent. Taking a  taxi  is a good option.
  • If you are  renting a car , for a  self-drive day trip  then, yes, you will have enough time to drive a bit around the Island.
  • Hvar Town offers a wide range of activities you can do in these few hours there: swimming, sunbathing,  kayaking , sailing, sightseeing, lunch, ice cream, coffee & relax with amazing views over the bay and nearby Pakleni islets.

What to do in Hvar?

Hvar Panorama

  • In Hvar, visit the Tower Fortica (Španjola) above the Town for amazing views (above photo) of the town’s harbor and nearby Pakleni islands.
  • Take a local taxi boat (water taxi) to Sveti Jerolim island for a swim (10 minutes by speedboat)
  • Have lunch or coffee in one of the waterfront cafe bars/restaurants
  • Try Hvar’s ice creams on the local promenade
  • Get back to the town’s harbor well in advance (at least 45 minutes) to embark on the ferry heading back to Dubrovnik.

Hi travellers,

1. Overnight ferry from Ancona, Italy to Split. I do not find any ferry directly to Dubrovnik from Ancona. Is there any?

2. Spending 2 days in Split . 1 day for exploring Split and 2nd day may be Trogir or Krka NP. Please suggest what else can be done?

3. Brac or Hvar island for 1 night? Which one to choose? We are mostly interested in leisure. Can we see Lavender fields in mid May? Then we will choose Hvar. Please pour suggestions.

4. Hvar/Brac to Dubrovnik by ferry and stay there for 2 nights.

5. Travel to Zadar from Dubrovnik by bus and stay there for 2 night. Not decided yet what can be done in Zadar.

6. Zadar to Zagreb by bus and stay there for 1 night.

Is this itinerary doable or should I skip Dubrovnik or Zadar?

Where to see bus schedules for May 2024?

You may be better off spending one night in Split , heading to an island, then going Dubrovnik to Zagreb with a stop in Split, and maybe a night in Plitvice lakes instead of Zadar en route to Zagreb. So 1 night Split, Hvar /Brač 1 night, Dubrovnik 2 nights, Split 2 nights, Plitvice 1 night, Zagreb 1 night. But I am not sure about the bus to Plitvice from Split.

You can find schedules on buscroatia.com

Thank you for quick response John.

There should be some activities for him also. Is there any other adventurous places/things which may be of interest of a teen?

I am thinking to do any one NP, either Krka or Pitvice due to time constraints.

2 nights Split (day trip to Omis for rafting, hiking and/or ziplining)

catamaran to Hvar

2 nights Hvar (if weather permits you can do a blue cave boat trip)

catamaran to Split and bus to Zadar (the solar lights are called the Sun Salutation)

2 nights Zadar (could do a NP Kornati boat trip)

bus to Plitvice

1 night Plitvice

visit at opening then bus to Zagreb

1 night Zagreb

Hey Thank you S.S. This sounds great.

Dubrovnik looks beautiful but wondering if it has anything more to offer others GOT, if compare to Split and Zagreb ? Travelling to Dubrovnik will take time at its far from Split.

Rather I am thinking to spend time in Hvar . Can we see Lavender fields only in Hvar?

Revised iternery as,

Day 1 - once reached to Split from Ancona, travelling to Hvar. Not staying in Split

Day 2- explore Hvar

Day 4 - Dubrovnik

Day 5 - Dubrovnik to Zadar

Day 6 - explore Zadar

Day 7 - Zadar to Pitvice

Day 8 - Pitvice to Zagreb

Day 9 - fly back to home

I will add 1 more day to Croatia iternery from my Italy iternery.

When you arrive in Split I highly recommend spending a few hours exploring the Palace before heading to Hvar . There is luggage storage at the Port if you require it.

Thank you once again, S.S.

I really appreciate your help.
