The cost of a yacht charter is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the charter destination, local taxes, and the base cost. (If the yacht has a celebrity owner, well that too, can add to the cost.)

Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.

Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”

In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:

• All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
• Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.

What can you expect to pay for a catamaran, a sailing vessel, or motored yacht? Here’s a quick overview of the average cost to rent a yacht (not including extra expenses) for the most common types available:

Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices

Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:

• The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
• Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
• Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters,   BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.

Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter

In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:

Advanced Provisioning Allowance

The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.

In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.

Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)

Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:

• The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
• BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
• Croatia – VAT: 13%
• Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
• France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
• Greece – VAT: 12%
• Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
• Montenegro – NO VAT
• New England – NO TAX
• Spain – VAT: 21%
• Turkey – NO VAT

Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.

Crew Gratuity

While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.

Delivery Fees

While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

How much does it really cost to charter a luxury yacht?

Booking your first charter can be a tricky stretch of water to navigate, especially when you're confronted with provisioning allowances and price variations before even stepping on board. To make things a little easier, we have put together the ultimate guide to all the costs you might encounter when booking your dream yacht charter vacation...

If you want to charter a luxury superyacht , understanding the costs involved can seem a little daunting first time around. The two important things to understand are your base price, referred to as a "charter fee" or "charter rate", together with what you will be expected to pay on top of it. All-inclusive charter rates are not industry practice, so guests should expect to be paying more than just the basic fees listed on broker’s websites or in their brochures.

The best analogy for determining the cost of your charter is with buying a car. It’s never quite as easy as just walking into a showroom and saying, “I’ll take the blue one.” Immediately the salesman will whip out his order pad and start asking questions. “Do you want a radio?” “How about the fancy wheels?” “Did you want the two-tone paint?”

Yacht brokers will be able to provide you with an accurate estimation of all the costs involved in advance, but here is a breakdown of what to expect.

What is a yacht “charter”?

At a basic level, chartering a yacht means paying a fee to rent out an owner’s superyacht for an agreed period of time with a pre-arranged itinerary of where you will be cruising on board. During a charter vacation you will have access to all of the superyacht’s amenities which could include a swimming pool, beach club or cinema, as well as the toybox, which often provides equipment for water sports like wakeboarding, snorkelling or water skiing. During charters, guests will be looked after by the yacht’s crew, who will take care of your every need, including ferrying you to and from shore, washing laundry and providing meals cooked by the yacht’s chef.

How much does it cost to charter a superyacht?

Across BOAT International's listings, a charter vacation can range from a minimum of €14,000 per week (20 metre yacht George V ) to a maximum of €2,200,000 per week (126.2 Octopus ). Generally speaking, the bigger the yacht the bigger the cost of the charter, but this isn't always the case. There are actually many more factors that can influence the basic charter fee – not to mention the add-on expenses that are involved.

According to averages taken from BOAT International’s listings, smaller superyachts measuring under 30 metres LOA will have a weekly charter rate somewhere around €40,000 while yachts between 30 and 40 metres will weigh in at an average of €70,895 per week. 

Over 40 metres is when the charter rate will move into the €100,000 per week range, with yachts between 50 and 60 metres costing on average €219,826 per week while yachts in the 60 to 70 metre range average €444,521. Mega yachts measuring 80 metres and over will, on average, set charterers back by around €1.7 million a week. This is just an average price, however, and each yacht’s charter rate will be affected by a number of aspects from how many cabins and amenities there are on board to the dates and locations of where the charter takes place.

What factors can influence the base price of a yacht charter?

High season vs. low season.

In general, you’ll find two basic rates: high season and low season, usually with specific dates set for each. In addition, you’ll find chartering around special events that are more expensive: New Year’s Eve , Monaco during the Grand Prix , Cannes during the Film Festival , an Olympic destination or on the sidelines of the America’s Cup .

The key is to choose your times carefully. A difference of one week (from high season into low season) can significantly alter the cost, while still providing the same weather as the more expensive period. For yachts measuring between 30 and 40 metres, the high season price could result in an increased cost of around €6,000 per week. The highest increase in an average charter rate between low and high seasons can be seen in BOAT's listings of yachts measuring between 60 and 80 metres, with high season rates potentially costing around €33,000 extra.

The yacht itself

The yacht itself is a major factor in determining the charter cost, but it’s not just about size. A recently launched charter yacht from a famed builder with an experienced and popular charter crew is going to command top prices for its size range. Yachts with a legendary name or a history of celebrity ownership (for example Malcolm Forbes's iconic charter yacht Highlander , which has hosted everyone from Elizabeth Taylor to HRH Prince Charles) can also ask higher rates just for the “fame” value. And yachts with special features, such as cinemas or exceptional water toys like a submarine are also pricier.

Three different 30 metre charter yachts may vary in cost by as much as €75,000. Ask your broker to explain the differences. One yacht may have a larger and more experienced crew or a big-name chef, another yacht may be a little tired, another may not be in a prime location. It’s important to understand why the prices are higher or lower.

If a yacht has a gap in its charter calendar to fill, for example following an unexpected cancellation, some brokers will occasionally offer a time-limited charter fee discount offer .

What is included in a charter contract?

Knowing the base price of your charter is just the starting point. Depending on the location, which often governs the terms of the contract , more or less may be included in the inital fee, such as insurance or cancellation policies. Bear in mind that every charter yacht, because they are privately owned and the owner sets the rules, is slightly different. One yacht may include a “standard” selection of wines with every meal and charge only to upgrade the vintages, while on another yacht the wines are a la carte. Below we look at the different types of charter contracts you may come across when booking your yacht.

Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA)

Under Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA) charter contracts, which are arguably the most common, the charterer is charged for the hire of the yacht, fuel, marina fees, crew wages, guests' personal laundry, insurance, water toys, food and drink as well as engine room maintenance and miscellaneous expenses. As a round number, which depends on how much fuel the yacht uses and how fancy the meals and drinks, you can expect to add 25% to 50% of your charter cost.

Caribbean Terms Inclusive (CTI)

The Caribbean Terms Inclusive (CTI), which is sometimes called Standard Caribbean Terms (SCT), is another type of charter contract which is more inclusive. It accounts for three meals per day and fuel for four hours of cruising a day. Some yachts under CTI terms include basic beverages (not vintage wines or champagnes), but this is mainly in the Virgin Islands.

Greek Terms (GT)

For yachts being chartered around the Greek Islands and mainland, another common phrase you may come across is "Greek Terms" or a GT contract. This will similarly include the cost of the yacht and its equipment, crew wages and laundry as well as any specific berthing fees required for Greek waters. 

What is an Advance Provisioning Allowance?

Part of your yacht charter contract will include an Advance Provisioning Allowance or APA. This is an amount of about 30-35 per cent of the charter fee for a “plus all expenses” charter and about five per cent for an “all-inclusive” charter. It is sent to the yacht before the charter to provision the yacht according to your preferences.

During the charter, the captain will provide a running account of the usage of the funds and, at the end of the charter, will present a detailed accounting along with any unused funds in cash. If the APA balance runs low during the charter, the client is expected to provide the captain with a sufficient amount in cash to cover the needs for the remainder of their stay. Since many charterers prefer not to carry quantities of cash, the charter broker can hold an amount and release it to the captain as needed. Here is what is covered by an APA...

Food and drink

Before you book a charter, your charter broker can provide you with a good estimate of the additional costs that will be incurred. Food is one of the largest and it is directly proportional to how exuberantly you plan to dine. If you expect several bottles of Champagne with every meal, then you can assume that your costs will be higher.

Fuel can be another cost and, again, it depends on how much the yacht cruises and how fast, too. Time spent at anchor will include the fuel for the generators, while shore-side electricity when at a dock is also an extra. Don’t forget that fuel is also charged for the tenders and water toys , so you’ll pay for the fuel used while zipping around on the jetskis.

Harbour fees and dockage

Harbour fees and dockage are a variable that can range from exorbitant (a front-row dock at the Monaco Grand Prix) to little or nothing in some areas.

Communications

Communications are another cost and, with the options for satellite communications and Internet, an important one for most charterers.

Delivery fee

A delivery fee is usually charged if a charterer requests to board (or depart) a yacht at a distance from where the yacht is normally based.

All the yacht laundry, including towels, sheets and table linens, is included in the charter fee, but some yachts charge to launder personal items of the charterer. Most, however, will do small quantities of personal laundry as a service but they usually won’t be responsible for delicate items.

At the end of each yacht charter, a cash tip is given by the primary guest to the captain to divide amongst the crew. Standards for a crew tip can range from five to 20 per cent of the base charter rate. This is not a cost included in the APA but some brokers will advise that any APA funds leftover at the end of the charter can be used to make up part for the tip. One cost not directly related to the operation of the charter yacht is insurance for the charterer. Cancellation and curtailment insurance is the charter version of travel insurance on airlines and cruise ships: It covers the charterer for the costs if unforeseen circumstances force a cancellation or shortening of the charter. Your charter broker can provide this insurance, which is a wise investment.

Charterers may be charged VAT, or “value added tax”, on the charter fees. Many European countries and a few Caribbean islands add VAT, but it is a complex issue that depends on where you board and debark the yacht, so rely on your charter broker for advice.

While it may seem at first glance that the extras or "hidden costs" on many charters are just a way to pad your bill, they are actually a benefit to the charterer. Food and drink, for example, is custom-ordered to meet the client’s requests, so the level of expense is entirely up to the charterer. Fuel is only charged if it is used and other fees are also at the discretion of the charterer. So you do have a way to control your costs and still savour a luxurious charter. Do I need a charter broker, and how do I find one?

It’s a charter broker’s job to match you with the right yacht and crew—and then take the lead in planning the entire experience. Professional bodies such as MYBA The Worldwide Yachting Association act as a database of industry-recognized professionals. But the best source for finding a charter broker is often your own network. “Building up a relationship with a charter broker is very important,” says Jacqui Lockhart, a Monaco-based broker at Camper & Nicholsons International . “If possible, look for a recommendation from a friend.”

Once you’ve found the right broker, communication with them will be key. “Take the time to be as detailed with your preferences, such as dietary requirements, likes and dislikes, and preferred activities, as possible,” says London-based broker Charles Crane of Edmiston . “This will give us and the crew the best information to make the charter a success and tailored to perfection.”

How much should I be prepared to spend?

“The entry point is around $40,000 for a week on a yacht 82-feet upwards that can sleep six people," says Lockhart. What can take first time charterers by surprise is that this isn’t an all-inclusive figure. “The charter fee covers the hire, the crew, the insurance—everything that’s linked to the yacht,” Lockhart continues. Anything specifically for the client is extra—including food and beverages, fuel, and dockage. As a rule of thumb, budget for an extra 30 percent on top of the baseline charter figure for these extras, which goes into a fund known as the Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA). At the end of the charter, it is also customary to tip the crew; between 10 and 20 percent of the charter fee is a guideline figure. There may also be Value Added Tax (VAT) to pay on the charter rate, depending on the country of embarkation.

At the smaller end of the charter fleet, more opportunity exists for single-cabin bookings rather than whole yacht charters. This year in the Caribbean , Sheila Ruffin of Soca Yacht Charters has launched a “Stranger on the Seas” package. Prices start at around $6,000 per person—all-inclusive—on catamarans between 48 and 60 feet. “This allows couples the opportunity to mix and mingle with other couples for an adventurous and social yacht charter on the Caribbean Sea,” says Ruffin.

What destinations are best suited to first-time charterers?

“For first-timers, I wouldn’t recommend a remote destination,” says Captain Kelly Gordon of Freddy , a 106-foot charter yacht based out of the Bahamas . “When it’s hard to get to, that eats up some of your valuable time and can also take some of the fun out of it.”

While yachts are heading towards unchartered waters such as Antarctica with increasing frequency, cruising grounds in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean are classic destinations for a reason. “For the first-time charterer in these locations, there will be more yacht options to choose from, proven cruising grounds with known and safe anchorages, well-connected and easy access hubs to ensure smooth passage to embark and disembark the vessel as well as the ability to source most provisions that guests may want,” says Crane.

The key ingredient? The crew.

Although much of the focus is on securing the right yacht, the secret to the success of a charter is its crew. “Put simply, the crew make the difference between a good charter yacht and a bad one,” says Crane. Today’s crew are increasingly versatile. “They may also be a diving or yoga instructor, personal trainer, fisherman, or sommelier,” he continues.

The crew also knows your cruising area better than anyone else. “Be sure to pick their brain on fun things to do. They often love the opportunity to come up with fun activities and games, whether for kids or adults,” says Lotte Barker-Hahlo, a London-based charter broker at Burgess .

The level of hospitality from crew on most yachts often convert first-time charters into repeat customers. “The attention to detail from the crew is unsurpassed by any other luxury holiday,” says Barker-Hahlo. “From the unpacking of your suitcase to being offered a drink before you’ve even realized you’re thirsty, it’s 24-hour care and service.”

Gordon says that much of the feedback she receives at the end of a first-time charter is why didn’t we do this earlier? “People are always surprised at how we take the time to get to know their needs before they have even arrived. We really do study those preference sheets!”

Think carefully about who else you want on board

Another important factor to a successful yacht vacation? Your fellow travelers. This is a specific type of vacation, which should narrow your list of invitees. “Strongly consider who you vacation with when chartering a yacht,” urges Ruffin. “Unlike other vacation options, yachts are very intimate and exclusive. Choose to share your water adventure with those you like and will enjoy on the water for a week or more.” Maybe, even for veteran yachties, that's the sagest advice of all.

And one of the most common questions amongst novice charterers is ‘how much does it actually cost to charter a yacht?’

What will my yacht charter rate include? 

Most importantly, there are generally two types of yacht charter: an all-inclusive charter and the more common ‘plus expenses’ charter. As suggested by the name, the cost of an all-inclusive yacht charter will include (almost) everything such as crew, food, drinks, fuel and water sports equipment (though always check as this does vary between charter companies). However, s ome all-inclusive charters won’t include dockage or mooring fees, which can soon add up – but more on that later. 

A ‘plus expenses’ or ‘separated charges’ charter is where a base price is charged for the ship and its crew, while everything else is paid for through an ‘Advance Provisioning Allowance’ (APA) before you step onboard. Prior to a voyage, guests will complete a preference sheet with their likes and dislikes, enabling the chef and service team to stock up on the guest’s favorite items. This tends to be the norm on superyacht charters as it allows for a much more tailored experience.

As well as covering food and beverages, an APA will also cover things like fuel and possibly dockage. It is usually charged at around 30% of the yacht’s base rate. According to luxury yacht brokers Northorp and Johnson , the average price paid by its customers for a week’s ‘plus expenses’ charter was around $152,000 in 2020, which would mean an APA of around $45,600 – not a small sum, so it’s definitely something to be aware of when selecting your vessel.

A third, less common charter is a ‘bareboat’ charter. This is a charter without a crew or provisions and only generally favored amongst experienced yachtsmen and women or those who can supply their own crew.

For example, with leading yacht brokerage Burgess , a week’s charter in the Caribbean aboard the 163.3 ft Home starts at $245,000 . If you opt for the larger Laurentia , at 180.5 ft, the price starts at $450,000. Both yachts were built in 2017 by leading Dutch shipyard Heesen and have capacity for 12 guests, but there is over $200,000 difference in the price. Naturally, you can also expect a higher APA for a bigger ship. 

N ovice charterers might be surprised to learn that a larger yacht doesn’t automatically translate into a larger guest capacity. Most superyachts are capped at a 12 guest limit due to International Maritime Organization safety regulations.

Does the type of yacht impact the price?

The answer is yes, but to a lesser extent than size. There’s something for everyone when it comes to yachts: classic yachts (built between the 1920s and 1970s) allow you to experience old school glamour of a bygone era, whereas sportfishing yachts are nimble and offer a long-range to get you to the best fishing (or diving) spots.

Sailing yachts are a popular choice amongst boating enthusiasts, but by a long shot, the most popular charter yachts are motor yachts. These are typically what spring to mind when you picture a superyacht and (size-dependent) tend to be the most expensive type of yacht to charter, often being pricier to purchase, maintain and fuel. Explorer yachts are motor yachts designed to cope with the most extreme conditions – if you’re planning a luxury superyacht charter to Antarctica, for example, it’s likely to be aboard one of these.

Over the past decade, explorer yachts have skyrocketed in popularity amongst intrepid travelers looking for opulent adventure on the seven seas. A week onboard the world’s fastest explorer yacht, the 311.68 ft Bold , costs approximately $964,300. This also makes it one of the world’s most expensive yachts to charter, in line with what you’ll pay for chartering the crème de la crème of the more ‘conventional’ superyachts typically seen on the French Riviera, like the ultra-glamorous O’Pari . Is chartering during certain months more expensive than others?

The time of year will impact your charter price. In yachting, there are two main seasons – summer and winter – and chartering during these peak times will push up the cost. The summer season runs from May to October, with peak rates in July and August. The winter season runs from November to April, with peak rates over the Christmas holidays and into New Year. Location also dictates the price of a charter; for example, Caribbean charters are costlier from December to March whereas Mediterranean charters are at their priciest during the summer months. 

What about expenses, gratuities and other unexpected costs?

Not even a Mediterranean jellyfish has the power to sting an unassuming first-time sailor like end-of-trip expenses. 

As mentioned previously, with ‘plus expenses’ charters your APA is paid before you set sail. However, a detailed list of outgoings will be kept by the ship and if your expenses surpass the amount of your APA, you will be asked to cover the amount for the remaining charter. Saying this, it does work both ways – any unspent APA will be refunded to you. 

On both all-inclusive and ‘plus expenses’ charters, crew gratuities are not included in the yacht charter price. If you were happy with the service, the going rate is around 15 to 20% of the charter cost, so do keep this in mind. 

Depending on your charter agreement, docking fees, a charge you pay to keep your yacht in a marina or harbor overnight, may or may not be included in the cost. These can vary greatly depending on the location, time of year and the size of your yacht. Expect to pay the highest docking fees on the Mediterranean during high season with Capri and St Tropez commanding some of the steepest premiums.

Your itinerary can also affect the price, as traveling to places like Antarctica and the Arctic Circle require expensive permits. Certain destinations will also charge tax and VAT, so it is sensible to check with your broker if you’re keen on getting a cost breakdown before your trip.

How is the total price of a yacht rental calculated?

There are two main categories of yacht charters: all-inclusive or separated charges. 

The all-inclusive yacht rentals option (rare)

The all-inclusive option isn’t very common in yacht charters, and tends to be for smaller yachts and cruise where it’s easier to package a standardized offer.

As the name implies, all-inclusive yacht charter offers a price that includes everything: fuel, food, beverages, and entertainment (diving and fishing equipment).

The “usual” option: base charter rates and separated variable charges to add on top

In most yachting websites, the price of a yacht charter only refers to the  base price  of a boat at its lowest possible charter time.

It doesn’t include many variable costs such as food and beverage, fuel, taxes, insurance and so on.

To understand the total cost of chartering a yacht when it’s not all-inclusive (which is almost always the case), it’s therefore important to split the costs that are included in the base rate of the yacht (the price you’ll see displayed on a website) from the costs that are not included in that base rate , that you will therefore need to add yourself if you want a precise estimation.

The base charter fee of the yacht rental is essential in calculating the total cost of your charter. Most variable costs are calculated as a percentage of that base fee and are simply summed up together along with the base fee to get the total cost.

Here is what you should know about the base charter fee.

The base charter fee follows a simple rule: the longer the yacht, the higher the charter cost

The boat’s size affects the base charter fee considerably. It determines the number of cabins and guest capacity , the number of staff on board, along with a lot of amenities that tend to get more spacious and more luxurious the longer the yacht gets. 

Everything that comes with the yacht (including the staff!) is included in the base charter fee.

The more reputable and in-demand the yacht is, the higher the base fee gets

A yacht reputation and popularity can also affect the base fee, even for boats within the same size range.

Boats are by definition limited in stock and follow supply and demand laws . When a particular yacht is in high demand, whether it’s thanks to its reputation, its features, the season or its recent appearance in a movie, series or TV shows the price of the charter can shoot up.

The season does influence the yacht rental prices at the base fee level

Your yacht charter base fee depends to some extent on your date of departure. 

If you take your vacation during the busiest weeks of the year (high season) of a destination, you’ll pay a higher base price than someone who charters a yacht on low season dates.

In the Mediterranean, the high season is in summer while it’s in winter for the Caribbean. The yacht charter base fees will be at their highest during these months. 

Sometimes just a week or two can make a big difference to the price. Chartering a yacht in shoulder seasons can be a good idea when you are looking for good deals.

Likewise, since some destinations have very short seasons , it has increased demands and makes it more expensive.

International events will also increase the cost of a yacht charter. Expect to pay more if you want to attend the Monte-Carlo Masters (April), the Cannes Film Festival (May), or the Monaco Grand Prix (May) during your yachting vacations in the Mediterranean.

The amount varies a lot, depending on the ship and your activities. It will increase if the yacht has a higher fuel consumption, if you plan on cruising more than 4 hours a day, if you want to have onboard particular expensive brands, etc.

One wonders if Liza might have then asked, "Arthur, how much does it cost to charter a yacht?" The answer depends on a range of factors, including the charter destination, the type of yacht, taxes where the cruise occurs, level of pampering on board, and more. 

In general, a yacht charter can run from $3,000 for a day charter in Miami to $150,000 plus for a week-long charter in the Mediterranean. Smaller sailboat yachts, often catamarans, can be found for $10,000 per week in the Bahamas, and larger, gas-fueled motor yachts can fetch several hundred thousand dollars for a week in French Polynesia.

Clarifying what constitutes a "yacht" can be challenging. Some folks will say a boat larger than 33' is a yacht. Others, primarily those in the day-to-day yachting world, believe that a yacht should exceed 24 meters (78 feet). 

In addition to the base price of the charter, other costs can impact the total expense. Tipping of the crew, fuel costs, and provisioning contribute to the overall impact to your wallet. What is the Average Cost To Charter A Yacht?

Off-season, possibly with overcast days, cooler waters, and more wind, you can still charter a boat and will certainly save money over high-season pricing. Know too that lower costs don't necessarily translate to a lower-quality experience.

Before high season hits or as the high season fades, you'll find that it's easier to charter a yacht in some of the more desirable locations. These more tranquil times of year appeal to those who aren't looking for the action-packed, party-hard crowds that may flock to prime berths and moorings in conjunction with major social and sporting events around the world. 

Major events aside, there's no lack for other things to do in these locales. The reduced costs from steering clear of crowds affects other activities too during these slower times.

Shoulder seasons offer less intense weather than high season. In the Med, high season means higher temperatures. Milder weather can be just as appealing to individuals less inclined to bake themselves in the hottest sun during July and August.

The earlier or later in the season, expect charter costs to decrease proportionally relative to how far early or late you're able to cruise. Expect to save somewhere in the 15% - 20% range. In some instances you can snag a deal with savings of 50% or more.

Supply and demand, as with all things economic, affect a yacht charter fee. In destinations with an ample supply of yachts (places like the British Virgin Islands, the Bahamans, or the Med), the availability makes prices more competitive. 

In more remote charter locations, like Indonesia, French Polynesia, and Costa Rica, a more limited supply of yachts drives fees up.

Advanced Provisioning Allowance

APA (advanced provisioning allowance) is money in addition to the base cost of the charter. APA is used for paying expenses on board such as food and beverage, berthing fees, customs, and fuel. Like a bank account, the captain and chef are able to access the APA to cover expenses while on board the yacht. 

The amount needed for APA is dependent on the cost of fuel and berthing locally. Foodies wanting the best of everything for every meal will have higher APA costs than clients with less discriminating palates.

Generally speaking, plan to pay 30% to 40% of the base charter fee for APA. Spending more time underway and cruising from spot to spot as opposed to laying at anchor and saving fuel costs affects APA. 

Crew Gratuity

Tipping your captain and crew is a standard industry practice. That expense should be looked at closely when considering how much it costs to charter a yacht. Because gratuity starts at 5% and goes up to 20%, it has a sizable impact on overall cost for your charter experience. 

Tips are generally provided to the captain in cash. In some instances, rather than carry extra cash, clients can wire their tip in advance to be held in escrow. 

What is the Standard Gratuity for a Crewed Yacht Charter?

Because gratuity starts at 5% and goes up to 20%, it has a sizable impact on the overall cost of your charter experience. In the Med, based on input from the Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association (MYBA), most tips are in the 10% - 15% zone. 

Some background on Mediterranean gratuity: At one point several years ago, certain clients were tipping exorbitant amounts which led to increased expectations of yacht crews. When other clients weren't as generous, crews were less than enthusiastic, sullying the service image of yacht charters. The MYBA stepped in to level the playing field for a consistent amount and practice in the industry.

When there are extra funds left in the APA at the end of the charter, the funds can be used toward the gratuity or refunded to the client. Some clients will opt to tally 15% of the base cost to add to the APA as a means of being efficient and safe with the gratuity expense.

When you need it and have it, insurance can be the eighth wonder of the world. But it does come at a cost. As with other travel and vacation plans, purchasing travel insurance at the same time as you book your charter can save you money and headaches. It also buys peace of mind. 

As compared to other costs (i.e. APA, gratuity), travel insurance for your yacht charter runs in the 3% to 10% of the base fee range. Consider comprehensive travel insurance which lumps together coverage for the trip itself, medical/health situations, and the personal property you have with you on the trip. 

How Much is a Yacht Per Day?

During the low season, chartering a yacht can cost from $1,500 per day to $10,000+ per week. When it's high season, size of the yacht dependent, in the US, one could plan to pay $3,000 per day or $15,000 per week. Charter per-day prices tend to be higher than per week charges.

Average yacht charters are a weeklong (seven days). Some charter companies have a five-day minimum. In larger cities, it's possible to charter a yacht for a day or two but expect to pay a -higher average per day than you would for a five to seven-day charter.

How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht for 3 Days?

Pricing factors aside, a three-day charter can run from $2,500 to $10,000 depending mostly on the size of the boat and number of guests.

In the Bahamas, three-day yacht charters are not unheard of. The Bahamas is likely the most popular place to do a three-day charter. If one were to charter for three days in the Bahamas. How Much Does it Cost to Charter a Yacht For 7 Days?

Pretty much the standard yacht charter length, most pricing that you'll see listed on yacht charter websites focuses on the seven-day charter. 

Driven by location-location-location and size-size-size, a seven day charter will run from $15,000 to several hundred thousand dollars.

Cost Per State to Charter a Yacht

Some states are better known for their yacht chartering options. Many states, even those on the coast in reasonably-sized or well-known cities (Charleston, Washington DC, Philadelphia) don't offer a robust yacht charter industry. 

Major charter boat hubs in the US include Florida, New York, and small pockets of New England on the eastern seaboard. On the west coast, Seattle, Santa Barbara, San Francisco, and San Diego are locales known for yacht charter options as well as large-scale sailing events such as the America's Cup Challenger Series and the Louis Vuitton Cup. Such high-visibility events are certain to attract a yachting crowd. 

While not as active as the east or west coast, a nominal amount of yacht charter activity occurs in the Gulf Coast, primarily because of Florida's western side and plenty of money in the state of Texas.

A quick search on a luxury yacht charter website for California shows yacht charters starting at $11,500 (five guests, two crew, 47'). From this low end, prices rise steeply to a high end of $170,000 for a 140' yacht (that sleeps five and has a crew of nine) per week.

Charter a 40' Swan sailboat without a captain for less than $3,000 per week in New York. Or go big time and splurge on a 180' superyacht with room for 12 guests and 12 crew for the price of a cool $1.2/M per week – or $170K per day.

Luxury yacht charters in Seattle range from $4,500/day to $6,100/day with a captain.

If JR Ewing from the TV show, Dallas, was going to charter a yacht, he could expect to spend anywhere from $1,200 to $5,000 plus per day. High-end, luxury yachts in Texas can easily cost $4,000 a day or more.

In comparison, the cost for a yacht character in Puerto Rico is around just $1,100 per day, which is much more inexpensive.

How Much is it to Charter a Luxury Sailing Yacht?

Luxury sailing yachts are typically more cost-friendly than motor yachts. That's no surprise given the price of fuel. Chartering a sailing yacht will typically run anywhere from $1,000 per day to $25,000 per day.

Obviously, the bigger the sailboat, the bigger the charter fee. A cost-savings option is to bareback charter – which means there is no captain or crew. This option should only be considered by experienced sailors.

How Much is a Yacht Charter? 3 Main Costs Explained

Chartering a yacht can bring a lot of enjoyment and is one of the best ways to enjoy being out on the water for a variety of events and celebrating special occasions . Coordinating your charter and estimating the true cost of your excursion can be a challenging exercise. There are a variety of ways brokers and charters structure their fees and additional costs that we will break down while noting things that you should consider. We will also describe how rates can vary if you are looking to charter a yacht for a few hours, on a per-day basis, a long weekend, or more than a week.

As a general rule, the longer you commit to being on the yacht, think a week or more, then the more your rate for the yacht will decrease, but note that this is just for the boat . The primary factor driving the discounts is that the owner is securing more usage of the vessel and will happily discount the rate, but other costs will still increase for you. This brings us to the first major additional fee impacting the final cost of a yacht charter; the cost of operating.

1. Advanced Provisioning Allowance (APA)

Get ready to put down your credit card because selecting a yacht for your needs is just half of the journey and cost as you see in the below breakdown. Charters often change you all or a portion of the costs they intend to incur for operating the yacht. Not only are you charged for each item, but you pay upfront in the form of APA. This payment advancement is established to hold funds that will cover operating costs and the APA typically starts at around 30% to 40% of the cost to reserve the boat. The APA covers just about anything that goes into operating the yacht during your charter. It's important to note that the 30%-40% hold may cover all costs, but if you go over expect additional charges or if under the APA hold, a return of unused funds.

Below are the main items that typically fall under APA and an estimated cost per day for a 70-foot yacht accompanying 12 guests.

Fuel - $150 to $400 per day

This will vary depending on your itinerary, engines and fuel type, running efficiency, as well as the actual cost of fuel. Expect fuel prices at the dock to be 10% to 35% higher than at a traditional gas station. Diesel fuel, most common on larger boats, tends to be marked up less than gasoline. For a standard day charter, the boat typically will be out cruising for around two to three hours each day if staying local.

Food and Drinks - $50 to $150 per day per guest

Your food and drink budget can add up quickly depending on your tastes, how many meals you are eating on board, and of course the number of guests. If you are eating three meals plus snacks on board then the cost will increase vs two meals and snacks. Prefer steak, lobster, and fine wine to sandwiches, pizza, and beer, then expect the price to increase even more. One other thing to note is that if your requests require specialty shopping then there may be a fee added to the total food and beverage costs.

Chef - $250 to $750 per day

Some chefs will include their fee into a cost per person, which also includes the cost of the food. However, there are some chefs who will come on board to prepare the meals you've chosen and then charge a flat fee per day or meal for their time. Some celebrity chefs, think Top Chef contestants, will demand a higher fee, but we've estimated this cost without the celebrity factor.

Entertainment and Amenities - $200+ per day

Depending on the size of the yacht, it may include a tender, jet ski, water pads, slide, stand-up paddle boards, SEABOBS, flyboards, snorkel gear, kayaks, and inflatable islands, or more with their standard boat fee. With all of the options available, it's unlikely that most yachts will be able to have all of these items available for your charter. This is why most charters offer add-on options which are then charged as an additional cost and deducted from the APA. Entertainment such as live music, DJs, wine tastings, seaplane tour, photographers/videographers, and more is most likely another add-on, and the cost is a pass-through deducted from the APA. Internet and other utilities may be charged back to you as well.

Harbor and Docking Fees - $100 to $225 per day

Planning on visiting a different marina or making a few stops throughout your charter? Prepare to pay any harbor fees and/or docking fees. Some harbors, not as common in the U.S. for recreational charters, charge visiting vessels a harbor fee which is used to maintain the harbor. If the yacht you are on spends any time at the dock of a marina there is oftentimes a fee based on the yacht length and time spent at the dock. Reservations may be required but some marinas are making it easier to book and manage through services like Snag-A-Slip . Note that this should only apply if you are booking multi-day charters.

Delivery and Pickup Fees

If you want to be picked up or dropped off at a location outside of your charter's marina, there oftentimes is a cost associated that covers the yacht's time, crew, and fuel. This can vary based on a variety of factors, but if you want to be dropped off at a different location to end your charter and the return trip back is two hours, expect to pay $1,000 to $2,000 for the empty leg trip the charter makes back to its homeport.

Tip - $1,000 to $1,750 per day

Most charters strongly encourage tips for the captain and crew who are taking care of things before, during, and after your charter. How much you tip the crew of a yacht is dependent on the level of service and your satisfaction. It's completely discretionary, but usually expected and ends up being 15% to 20% of the charter cost. This can be deducted from your APA if there are funds remaining or added on at the end of your trip.

2. Charter Duration

There are many charter operations that only offer half-day or full-day charters. This is due to some complexities that arise once you mix in overnight charters. Overnights require a 24-hour crew, hotel-like amenities, and a few other logistical items. As a general rule, if you book a longer charter, then the less expensive it is on a daily basis. Charters may offer multi-day discounts because of the reduced prep work, cleaning, onboarding, offboarding, and the most important factor is that the yacht is actually working and making money compared to sitting empty at the dock. Some charters will offer between a 15% and 40% discount on the yacht/boat fee for longer bookings. This is because, as mentioned above, most of the operational costs are still passed through to you in the APA, so adding days to a charter doesn't increase the operational costs because that cost is passed on to you!

3. Number of Guests - $200 to $400 per day per crew

Most charters have a cap of 12 guests due to various regulations of the charter business. When charters quote you the yacht/boat fee, it typically comes with a captain and one crew member. If you are hosting up to 12 guests, then it will indicate to the charter if additional crew members are needed. For instance, if you add on specific water activities, it may require a dedicated crew member just to manage the usage of those add-ons. If there is a high demand for food and beverage, that may also warrant another dedicated crew member for prep, serving, and cleanup. If there are a total of 12 guests, the odds are that the yacht charter may require a minimum of three total crew members, not including the captain. The additional two crew members are not free and their costs will be added to your bill. Yacht charter crews are paid anywhere from $200 to $400 per day plus tips at the conclusion of the charter.

As an example, let's say you are trying to figure out how much it costs to charter a yacht for three days on a 70-foot yacht for 12 people. There are some other factors to consider such as the specific type of yacht, age of the yacht, location, and time of year, so use this as a rough guideline.

FACT SHEET: President   Biden Announces Plan to Lower Housing Costs for Working   Families

Building and preserving over 2 million new homes to lower rents and the cost of buying a home

President Biden believes housing costs are too high, and significant investments are needed to address the large shortage of affordable homes inherited from his predecessor and that has been growing for more than a decade. During his State of the Union Address, President Biden will call on Congressional Republicans to end years of inaction and pass legislation to lower costs by providing a $10,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers and people who sell their starter homes; build and renovate more than 2 million homes; and lower rental costs.  President Biden also announced new steps to lower homebuying and refinancing closing costs and crack down on corporate actions that rip off renters.

We are starting to see some progress. More housing units are under construction right now than at any time in the last 50 years, rents have fallen over the last year in many places, and the homeownership rate is higher now than before the pandemic. But rent is still too high, and Americans who want to buy a home still have difficulty finding one they can afford. That is why President Biden has a landmark plan to build over 2 million homes, which will lower rents, make houses more affordable, and promote fair housing.

Lowering Costs of Homeownership For many Americans, owning a home is the cornerstone of raising a family, building wealth, and joining the middle class. Too many working families feel locked out of homeownership and are unable to compete with investors for a limited supply of affordable for-sale homes. President Biden is calling on Congress to enact legislation to enable more Americans to purchase a home, including:

• Mortgage Relief Credit. President Biden is calling on Congress to pass a mortgage relief credit that would provide middle-class first-time homebuyers with an annual tax credit of $5,000 a year for two years. This is the equivalent of reducing the mortgage rate by more than 1.5 percentage points for two years on the median home, and will help more than 3.5 million middle-class families purchase their first home over the next two years. The President’s plan also calls for a new credit to unlock inventory of affordable starter homes, while helping middle-class families move up the housing ladder and empty nesters right size. Many homeowners have lower rates on their mortgages than current rates. This “lock-in” effect makes homeowners more reluctant to sell and give up that low rate, even in circumstances where their current homes no longer fit their household needs. The President is calling on Congress to provide a one-year tax credit of up to $10,000 to middle-class families who sell their starter home, defined as homes below the area median home price in the county, to another owner-occupant. This proposal is estimated to help nearly 3 million families.
• Down Payment Assistance for First-Generation Homeowners. The President continues to call on Congress to provide up to $25,000 in down payment assistance to first-generation homebuyers whose families haven’t benefited from the generational wealth building associated with homeownership. This proposal is estimated to help 400,000 families purchase their first home.

The President isn’t waiting for Congress to lower costs for homebuyers and homeowners. Last year, the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) reduced the mortgage insurance premium for Federal Housing Administration (FHA) mortgages, saving an estimated 850,000 homebuyers and homeowners an estimated $800 per year. And today, the President is announcing new actions to lower the closing costs associated with buying a home or refinancing a mortgage.

• Lowering Closing Costs for Refinancing. The Federal Housing Finance Agency has approved policies and pilots to reduce closing costs for homeowners, including a pilot to waive the requirement for lender’s title insurance on certain refinances. This would save thousands of homeowners up to $1500, and an average of $750, and the lower upfront fees will unlock substantial savings for homeowners as mortgage rates continue to fall and more homeowners are able to refinance. According to independent analysis , across the market title insurance typically pays out only 3% to 5% of premiums in claims to consumers, compared to more than 70% in other types of insurance. Homeowners can still purchase their own title insurance policies if they choose to do so.
• Lowering Closing Costs for Home Mortgages. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will pursue rulemaking and guidance to address anticompetitive closing costs imposed by lenders on homebuyers and homeowners.  These charges—which benefit the lender but not the borrower—can add thousands to the upfront costs of a mortgage.  Those upfront costs cut into the amount of homebuyers’ down payments and reduce homeowners’ available equity.

In the coming months, the Department of Treasury’s Federal Insurance Office will convene a roundtable of relevant industry stakeholders, including consumer advocates and academics, in order to discuss the title insurance industry and analyze potential reforms. Building on today’s announcements, President Biden is calling on federal agencies to take all available actions to lower costs for consumers at the closing table and help more Americans access homeownership.

Lowering Costs by Building and Preserving 2 Million Homes America needs to build more housing in order to lower rental costs and increase access to homeownership. That’s why the President is calling on Congress to pass legislation to build and renovate more than 2 million homes , which would close the housing supply gap and lower housing costs for renters and homeowners. This legislation would build on executive actions in the Biden-Harris Administration’s Housing Supply Action Plan that contributed to record housing construction last year.

• Tax Credits to Build More Housing. President Biden is calling for an expansion of the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit to build or preserve 1.2 million more affordable rental units. Renters living in these properties save hundreds of dollars each month on their rent compared with renters with similar incomes who rent in the unsubsidized market. The President is also calling for a new Neighborhood Homes Tax Credit, the first tax provision to build or renovate affordable homes for homeownership, which would lead to the construction or preservation of over 400,000 starter homes in communities throughout the country.
• Innovation Fund for Housing Expansion. The President is unveiling a new $20 billion competitive grant fund as part of his Budget to support communities across the country to build more housing and lower rents and homebuying costs. This fund would support the construction of affordable multifamily rental units; incentivize local actions to remove unnecessary barriers to housing development; pilot innovative models to increase the production of affordable and workforce rental housing; and spur the construction of new starter homes for middle-class families. According to independent analysis, this will create hundreds of thousands of units which will help lower rents and housing costs.
• Increasing Banks’ Contributions Towards Building Affordable Housing. The President is proposing that each Federal Home Loan Bank double its annual contribution to the Affordable Housing Program – from 10 percent of prior year net income to 20 percent – which will raise an additional $3.79 billion for affordable housing over the next decade and assist nearly 380,0000 households. These funds will support the financing, acquisition, construction, and rehabilitation of affordable rental and for-sale homes, as well as help low- and moderate-income homeowners to purchase or rehabilitate homes.

Lowering Costs for Renters President Biden is also taking actions to lower costs and promote housing stability for renters. The White House Blueprint for a Renters Bill of Rights lays out the key principles of a fair rental market and has already catalyzed new federal actions to make those principles a reality. Today, President Biden is announcing new steps to crack down on unfair practices that are driving up rental costs:

• Fighting Rent Gouging by Corporate Landlords . The Biden-Harris Administration is taking action to combat egregious rent increases and other unfair practices that are driving up rents. Corporate landlords and private equity firms across the country have been accused of illegal information sharing, price fixing, and inflating rents. As part of the Strike Force on Unfair and Illegal Pricing announced by President Biden on Tuesday, the President is calling on federal agencies to root out and stop illegal corporate behavior that hikes prices on American families through anti-competitive, unfair, deceptive, or fraudulent business practices. In a recent filing , the Department of Justice (DOJ) made clear its position that inflated rents caused by algorithmic use of sensitive nonpublic pricing and supply information violate antitrust laws. Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission and DOJ filed a joint brief further arguing that it is illegal for landlords and property managers to collude on pricing to inflate rents – including when using algorithms to do so.
• Cracking Down on Rental Junk Fees . Millions of families incur burdensome costs in the rental application process and throughout the duration of their lease, from “convenience fees” simply to pay rent online to fees charged to sort mail or collect trash. These fees are often more than the actual cost of providing the service, or are added onto rents to cover services that renters assume are included—or that they don’t even want. Last fall, the FTC proposed a rule that if finalized as proposed would ban misleading and hidden fees across the economy, including in housing rental agreements. Last month, HUD released a  summary of banned non-rent fees within their rental assistance programs. These actions build on voluntary commitments the President announced last summer from major rental housing platforms to provide customers with the total, upfront cost on rental properties on their platform.
• Expanding Housing Choice Vouchers . Over the last three years, the Administration has secured rental assistance for more than 100,000 additional households. The President is calling on Congress to further expand rental assistance to more than half of a million households, including by providing a voucher guarantee for low-income veterans and youth aging out of foster care – the first such voucher guarantees in history. Receiving a voucher would save these households hundreds of dollars in rent each month.

Meet the Delta Captain Who Spent a Year's Salary Chartering an Airbus to Take 112 Friends on a Retirement Flight to Hawaii "You don't want to be the richest man in the graveyard one day."

Keith Rosenkranz went to high school next to the north runway at Los Angeles International Airport.

"On rainy days, I would sit in the second-story window of my high school, and just watch the planes take off and land," he told Business Insider. "And that was kind of a dream that I wanted to do that one day."

Throughout his 33 years as a Delta Air Lines pilot , Rosenkranz would dip the plane's wing toward his alma mater everytime he took off from LAX.

"There might be a young boy or young girl that's sitting in that window that's dreaming of flying just the way I did," he said.

On February 28, the 64-year-old dipped the wing of an Airbus A330neo for the last time as part of what might just be the coolest retirement party ever.

After 16 months of planning, Rosenkranz chartered the widebody jet from Delta to transport 112 friends and family.

Aviation news sites including Simple Flying and One Mile at a Time reported on the charter after it gained attention on X.

Delta's A330-900 has 281 seats, although Rosenkranz said he chose the number of guests because he used a transportation company with two buses that could seat 56 people.

Passengers came from different stages of his life: from grade school through to college and the Air Force, Delta coworkers, and Texas neighbors.

Rosenkranz told BI he got the idea in October 2022 because many of his coworkers' retirements were disrupted by the pandemic.

"Going back to when we were dealing with COVID, a lot of the pilots didn't get a final flight that they wanted," he said. "We canceled so many flights to Europe. One of my buddies, all he could fly was Atlanta to Orlando and back. He got one ticket for his wife, and that was it."

He called a friend in Delta's charter division with the idea, who told him: "Nobody's ever done that before."

Rosenkranz managed to negotiate a lower price than was first offered, after pointing out he was an employee rather than a professional sports team like its usual customers.

He told BI it cost him "a good year's salary," but added: "You can't put a price on something that was that big. You think about being able to go out that way and take all your family and friends on a whirlwind journey. You don't want to be the richest man in the graveyard one day."

Dallas to LA to Hawaii

Rosenkranz described the trip as "very emotional," especially when he and his family arrived at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport about 6 a.m.

"There are 50-some people in the gate area, and I just broke down," he told BI.

"Then when we got out to the jet and they had it all decorated with pictures and other things, that was emotional a second time," he added.

In Los Angeles, the jet was welcomed with a water cannon salute, which has become rarer due to the city's water restrictions. Rosenkranz told BI he was only the second pilot in nine years to receive the honor.

The trip went on to Hawaii. It needed four pilots because regulations prohibit flying both a domestic and ocean-crossing trip in one day.

Rosenkranz told BI he met the pilot who served as his first officer on the trip when they were 16-year-old box boys at Safeway.

In Hawaii, he and his wife, Colette, renewed their wedding vows.

"When I met her on August 22, 1977, I was wearing a yellow Hawaiian shirt. And the girl that introduced me to my wife was part of the guest list," Rosenkranz said.

"So I had her come up, and I had given her that yellow shirt. And so I'm taking off my current shirt, and putting on this yellow one. And then I invited Colette up, and she was very surprised and excited."

A passion for flying

By chance, Rosenkranz's last flight with Delta happened to fall on the anniversary of his last flight on an F-16 fighter jet, in 1991.

Before becoming a commercial pilot, he served in the Air Force where he flew 30 combat missions.

At Delta, he met a Vietnam War veteran who encouraged him to write a memoir after hearing his stories from the Gulf War. "Vipers in the Storm" was published by Aviation Week in 1999.

For the charter, one of his friends made a cut-out of Rosenkranz from the book's cover.

Rosenkranz told BI how he writes back to readers who become inspired to join the military. He became good friends with one, named Isaac, who ended up in his same Air Force squadron. Years later, they ended up piloting the same Delta A320 .

Rosenkranz's passion for flying is palpable as he smiles recounting past flights: "I've been all over the Far East. I've been to Moscow. I've been all over Europe. I've been down to South America. And I had a window seat the entire time."

The pilot recalled how he gives talks at schools, and always asks the kids when they think he last worked.

"I say I haven't worked since 1983 when I was at Safeway supermarket. Ever since then, I've been getting paid to fly jets."

Queensland local government election results show several incumbent mayors face 'kicking' from voters

A mood for change has swept through regional Queensland, with voters punishing several incumbent mayors in major cities who are fighting to hold onto their jobs. 

The long-time mayor of Townsville, Jenny Hill, is battling to save her political career after a challenge from local businessman Troy Thompson.

With almost 70 per cent of the vote counted, Ms Hill is trailing Mr Thompson 43.71 per cent to 46.19 per cent on the first preference vote.

The third candidate, nurse Harry Patel, has received just over 10 per cent of the first preference vote.

Mayors in Cairns, Bundaberg, Mackay,  the Southern Downs and Mount Isa are also facing tough times and, in some cases, are losing the battle to hold on to their jobs.  

Voters dissatisfied

Griffith University political analyst Paul Williams said there appeared to be a mood for change across some, but not all, regional parts of the state.

"The only indicator that we might have to what voters might be thinking in changing local government representatives, as any reason why voters want to change incumbents, is general dissatisfaction," Associate Professor Williams said.

"So we know that voters, particularly in regional Queensland are unhappy with a range of issues.

He said cost of living was the biggest issue, followed by youth crime.

"So if the local voters feel politicians aren't doing enough about youth crime, if politicians aren't doing enough about cost of living, they will kick the incumbent at the first opportunity," he said.

"And the first opportunity in this occasion is a local government election in regional Queensland."

He said that was the case even if the level of government involved didn't have oversight over that issue. 

State election warning

Associate Professor Williams said the results in areas such as Townsville and Cairns would be a worry for the Labor state government, which is looking to hold onto those seats at October's State Election.

He said Labor members and candidates in the regions would feel the mood for change more than others.

"Just because voters have kicked incumbents in regional Queensland, particularly in the provisional cities, doesn't mean they're going to kick LNP candidates, far from it," he said.

In Townsville, neither Mr Thompson nor Cr Hill, who has been mayor since 2012, has claimed victory.

Mr Thompson said he would be closely monitoring the results today.

"I won't say I'm comfortable at all I'm just at the point where we wait with caution and see how we go," Mr Thompson said.

"There's still 45,000 votes to come in and also the preferences."

Mr Thompson, who is reported to have previously sought preselection with One Nation but is currently not a registered member of the party, ran on a rate freeze and tough-on-crime platform.

Crime, cost of living key issues

High crime rates in the city and the cost of living were two of the key issues voters raised at the polling booth.

"Just fix up the crime around Townsville make it a better place for all of us," one voter told the ABC.

"Cost of living … that is a lot, it's expensive."

Another voter, Grace Bryce, said that her while crime was an issue, road conditions and access to parks were also important.

The tough results for Cr Hill come after she was found not guilty in 2021 of driving without due care and attention in a crash that claimed the life of a 33-year-old motorcyclist.

The crash occurred in January 2020, in the months leading up to the previous council election.

She is one of many incumbent mayors across regional Queensland facing a strong challenge as counting continues from Saturday's elections.

In Bundaberg, incumbent Jack Dempsey, who in 2022 unsuccessfully ran for federal parliament, is trailing challenger Helen Blackburn.

Ms Blackburn, with 71 per cent of the vote counted, has just over 57 per cent of the first preference vote, while Mr Dempsey has just over 32 per cent.

Cr Dempsey took to Facebook on Sunday afternoon to thank people for their encouragement and support over the past eight years.

"It was a pleasure and a privilege to serve as mayor of the beautiful Bundaberg Region," the post said.

Ms Blackburn said the election results showed a mandate for transparency and accountability.

"I'm feeling very confident with the election results, that the people of the Bundaberg region have decided that what they are after is change," she said. 

Cairns Mayor Terry James is trailing challenger Amy Eden, who has 31 per cent of the first preference vote to his 22 per cent – with 55 per cent of the vote counted.

Ms Eden said she was feeling "buoyed" by the results. 

Mackay Mayor Greg Williamson is currently leading the first preference count, receiving 42 per cent of the vote.

However, former rugby league player Steve Jackson is coming second with just over 38 per cent of the first preference vote, while councillor Laurence Bonaventura has received just under 20 per cent.

"It's a very close race, there is no doubt about it," Cr Williamson said.

"All we can do now is wait.

"All of the pre-poll votes have got to be counted and there's a few thousand of those to go, and once that's determined then there's the distribution of the preferences."

Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen is trailing challengers Tom Sharp and Jeffrey McConnell.

He conceded defeat on Sunday afternoon. 

On the Southern Downs, Mayor Vic Pennisi is behind challenger Melissa Hamilton.

Ms Hamilton said the votes were showing an appetite for change.

"If the voting trends continue then I am ready to lead a new council that works together to get things done for all of our wonderful communities, and I'm excited by the opportunities for our region," she said. 

Incumbent mayors in the Cassowary Coast, Aurukun, Burdekin, Cherbourg, North Burnett, Charters Towers, Mornginton Shire, Wujal Wujal and Maranoa were also under pressure as counting continued.

An 'anti-incumbency trend'

Queensland University of Technology Associate Professor John Mickel, a former speaker of Queensland's Legislative Assembly, said there had been an "anti-incumbency trend" across many parts of regional Queensland.

"It was profound in Bundaberg and the Scenic Rim. There is evidence of it in Mackay, and it seems to be there in Townsville as well," he said.

"In the absence of exit polling, it's hard to know why the trend is there.

"But it seems to be part of a story this time in regional Queensland."

Professor Mickel said local government elections in Queensland worked on an optional preferential voting model – where voters just had to put a 1 next to their candidate of choice.

He said the trend across previous elections showed voters generally didn't preference other candidates, so those who were leading in the first preference count tended to win.

"There might be some exchange of preferences, but not enough to overhaul anybody," he said.

"A lot of people are happy just to put one because they know that person."

But he said while there were these tight races in some areas, such as Gladstone and smaller regions like Goondiwindi, there had been a trend of some mayors running unopposed.

"It's a tale of Queensland in a way, there's so much regionalism," he said.

Some candidates confident

In Rockhampton, Mayor Tony Williams said he felt confident he would retain his role for another term.

Mr Williams is leading the count with 68 per cent of first preference votes, and around 80 per cent of the votes have been counted.

"There is plenty of opportunity coming up for our region over the next decade, and I think now is a great time to take advantage of that," Mr Williams said.

Former federal MP George Christensen looks set to return to politics as vote counting continues in the Mackay councillor race.

Mr Christensen is a member of Steve Jackson's 'Jacko's Team' grouping and is currently coming second in the race for one of 10 councillor positions — but only a small number of votes have been counted so far. 

In recent days, Mr Christensen, now a member of One Nation, has been running on an anti-woke platform, slamming a theatre event for kids at the council-owned events centre, as it features drag queens.

• Some charter guests on Below Deck have caused unnecessary drama and won't likely return due to bad behavior.
• Captain Glenn Shephard from Below Deck Sailing Yacht faced backlash from Barrie, who called him two-faced.
• Former guest Dr. Francis Martinis will not return to Below Deck after he was arrested for faking prescriptions.

The Below Deck franchise has featured many charter guests since 2013, many of whom will never return . The Bravo series focuses on expensive charters with wealthy guests who have attitude problems and over-the-top demands. That includes Charter guest Alexis Bellino, who boarded Captain Lee Rosbach’s yacht with her boyfriend at the time, Andy Bohn. She was disrespectful and made everyone uncomfortable with her and Andy's PDA. She even insulted crew members after featuring on the show.

Like Alexis, Delores Flora from Below Deck season 8 was a terrible guest. Not only did she misbehave, but she also got drunk and s wam while intoxicated, which is not only not allowed, it frightened the crew members. Delores got kicked out of the yacht the next day. These guests created unnecessary drama on the boat and will likely never return like a few others from the franchise.

Barrie and Tony Drewitt Barlow had a decent time in the Below Deck Sailing Yacht seasons 2 and 3. Despite that, they left with a bitter taste because of Captain Glenn Shephard. Barrie said, “he (Captain Glenn) was a two-face b*stard,” adding that he just didn’t like his presence.

Even if Kyle quits, Frank wouldn’t want to be in an environment that would remind him of his failed relationship.

Erica Rose appeared on Below Deck Sailing Yacht two seasons in a row. Erica was highly offensive toward the crew member, as well as her husband, Charles Sanders, and to make things worse, she left the crew with a measly tip , leading fans to slam her on social media. Ultimately, Erica had to apologize for her bad attitude but never returned to give the crew the tip they deserved. Nobody on Below Deck Sailing Yacht would ever want to return.

Justin Guarini’s time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht was not dramatic at all; however, he’ll probably never return to the series. Justin wouldn’t return because he wasn't the primary guest. He joined his friend, Kim, who wanted to enjoy a luxury yacht trip. It was more of a one-and-done deal. Secondly, nobody recognized him at all. Viewers later realized who he was and how he was the runner-up on American Idol season 1. Justin is a theatre artist and has made a name for himself. However, it was embarrassing that so many fans had no clue who he was .

Johnny Damon’s time at Below Deck Med was full of explosive moments. Once, he sent the food back, citing that the experience wasn’t “five stars.” On another occasion, his wife, Michelle, created drama by yelling at the owner of another yacht . Overall, the experience was simply terrible on both sides. Crew members didn’t love Johnny and his wife, and the couple didn’t respect the crew members. It is unlikely that Captain Sandy would want to host the couple again as long as she’s in charge.

3 Krystal Murphy

Former charter guest Krystal Murphy boarded Captain Lee’s yacht with her friends. She immediately began showing red flags, drinking, and just being a menace. Krystal fought with her friend, Chelsea, creating unnecessary drama. She even passed out and punched a friend in the face. Former Chief Stew Kate Chastain disliked serving Krystal and called her a “spoiled brat;” she wanted to throw her off the yacht. Nowadays, Krystal has seemingly become a more private person. It doesn’t seem like Krystal would want to be on TV again.

2 Steve Bradley

Below Deck fans should remember Steve Bradley as he made many appearances on the show. In Below Deck season 3, he wanted a foam party and demanded the crew to figure it out and follow his commands, acting like a king. In Below Deck season 6, Steve made more outrageous requests. Apart from being a wild guest, Steve was entitled and acted inappropriately at times . No Below Deck captain would want to host him again as he didn't come off as very likable.

1 Dr. Francis Martinis

Dr. Francis Martinis from Below Deck Med and Below Deck Sailing Yacht has a zero chance of returning. While the former charter guest didn’t have too many issues on the show, his personal life issues will stop him from appearing on Bravo again. According to TMZ , Dr. Francis and his wife, Jessica, were arrested for filling out fake prescriptions in December 2023 . The couple used the names of Below Deck stars and got caught red-handed. The Below Deck franchise would never want to welcome felons, especially when their mugshots are all over the internet.
