Birgu (Vittoriosa): Things to Do, Where to Stay and more
Birgu (also referred to as Vittoriosa) is the oldest of a part of Malta referred to as The Three Cities (which also consist of Senglea and Cospicua) – three fortified towns built in very close proximity to each other around the Grand Harbour.
It’s located right across the harbour from Valletta , facing Malta’s capital city’s south-facing side.
After the Great Siege of 1565, an important milestone in Malta’s history , Birgu was awarded the title Città Vittoriosa (Victorious City) after withstanding the brutal attacks of the Ottoman invaders. Birgu was also the headquarters of the Knights of St John , to whom we owe the city’s alternative name of Vittoriosa.
This town played an important role in Maltese history, serving as the capital city of Malta between 1530 and 1571 until Valletta was built. The Knights wisely built Fort St Angelo at the very tip of Birgu due to its strategic position overlooking the Grand Harbour. Apart from being their living quarters, this fort also housed the arsenal of the Order. The fort protected the harbour, guaranteeing safe anchorage, which in turn promoted mercantile and military activities.
Modern-day Birgu is home to a population of almost 3,000 citizens. Birgu is slowly developing into a high-profile historical showcase of Maltese tradition that carries Medieval nostalgia across its narrow winding streets, alleyways, and converted townhouses. Wine bars, tiny, elegant restaurants, and the Birgu waterfront have brought new life to the small city.
Apart from being a nice place to visit for an evening out, there’s a lot to see and explore, and it’s well worth planning a day trip for.
Things to do in Birgu Malta
Within its tiny 0.5 square kilometres triangular area Vittoriosa Birgu has a surprising amount of places of interest. The following is a list of the most important locations and attractions:
The Malta Maritime Museum
The Malta Maritime Museum is located just off Freedom Square at the beginning of the marina, this place is worth a visit for those interested in the maritime history of Malta. The building of the museum is in itself pretty interesting, having served as an arsenal for galleys of the Knights as well as a bakery for the Royal Navy during British rule. Inside, one can find a selection of exhibits that span a period of over 2,000 years, from the Roman era to modern times, including the largest known Roman anchor.
The Inquisitor’s Palace
A magnificent piece of architecture, the Inquisitor’s Palace was built by the Knights in the 1530s. Afterwards, it served as home to the Inquisitors of the Roman Catholic Church, complete with prison cells, a tribunal room, a chapel and myriad dark legends of torture and punishment.
The Vittoriosa Parish Museum
Residing within St Joseph’s Oratory, the Vittoriosa Parish Museum offers a rich collection of exhibits, among which there’s Grandmaster Jean de La Valette’s hat and everyday sword, the same one he used during the Great Siege. Admission is free however, the opening hours are limited from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on weekdays only.
Malta at War Museum
Located at Couvre Porte, the Malta at War Museum provides an insight into life in an air-raid shelter during a Second World War blitz. Walking through the shelter, visitors can see how inhabitants ate, slept and carried out everyday activities in those troubled times. Open for visiting all week (except Sunday) from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Save big on sightseeing with iSeeMalta , with hop-on/hop-off buses and boats, combo tickets for museums and the ferry to the Blue Lagoon!
Fort St. Angelo
Fort St. Angelo was built by the Knights over the ruins of a castle dating back to Medieval times. The fort provided safety to the harbour and also to the inhabitants of the area, who used it as a refuge during frequent raids. It has undergone restoration works over the past years and is open to the public (as of October 2016) after years of having been inaccessible.
The Birgu waterfront
The Birgu waterfront, restored in recent years and boasting a yacht marina, offers a wide promenade that provides a picturesque area for dining al fresco and the possibility to enjoy a sublime walk along the marina afterwards.
The Collachio
Leading off the main square are the narrow winding streets of the Collachio, the medieval heart of the ancient city. Here the Knights of St John lived and built their Auberges. It provides an interesting walk through time as the tell-tales of different cultures unfold through intricate architecture stretching from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and the Baroque to post-World War Two.
The Auberge d’Angleterre
One of the eight auberges built in Birgu in the 16th century by the Knights, the Auberge d’Angleterre is still in use today as a public library.
The Auberge de France
The Auberge de France is another auberge built by the Knights in the 16th century and is now home to the Birgu local council.
The Church of Saint Lawrence
Built in Baroque style in the shape of a Latin cross, the Church of Saint Lawrence was used by the Knights for very important functions before St. John’s Cathedral was built in Valletta.

Sightseeing places outside Birgu
If you decide to stay in Birgu, there are a few great transport options to do additional sightseeing:
- Being right across from the capital city of Valletta, you can hop on a ferry from the Birgu terminal and get there with a 7-minute ride across Grand Harbour. There’s a lot to see and do in Valletta .
- You can also hop on to a ferry operated by iSeeMalta that offers you a tour of both of Valletta’s harbours. The departure point is located at Esplora, Kalkara (neighbouring town – 20-min walk from Birgu). It’s also a good option to hop off at Sliema Ferries for further sea connections that can take you to many places across Malta and Gozo. The regular hop-on/hop-off by ferry or bus , for starters.

How to get there
Getting to Birgu by bus is easy – it only takes 15 minutes from Valletta via bus route numbers 2, 3 or 4. There are no direct lines from other popular localities, however, so if you’re not staying in Valletta, you’ll need to catch a bus heading there first.
By ferry or water taxi
Alternatively, a more scenic and stylish way to cross to Birgu is across the Grand Harbour, either by ferry (from a location referred to as Lascaris in Valletta, near the Gozo fast ferries) or by a water taxi (gondola style!).
The crossing by ferry takes 7 minutes and starts from the Valletta waterfront. You can also take the 30-minute harbour tour for a little extra. The trip back is equally pleasing, providing a beautiful approach to Valletta.
Take a tour around the Three Cities
Including transfers to and from your accommodation, another easy way to visit Birgu is on this guided half-day (morning) tour of the Three Cities . That way, you can also get a taste of Cospicua and Senglea, which are also very interesting to visit. It’s mostly a walking tour, but you also get a harbour cruise on a traditional Maltese boat, which makes for a fun experience all around.
You can also take this full-day tour of the Three Cities that includes wine sampling of a variety of local wines or take a 2-hour vintage bus tour through the three towns.
Looking for a fun and relaxed way of doing some sightseeing? Give The Rolling Geeks a try! You get to drive a Golf buggy yourself and go around the Three Cities following the included guided tour. I got on this tour, and I especially recommend it if you have small kids.
Hop-on-hop-off
You can also take the South Route of the Hop-on-hop-off bus routes to get to Birgu (indicated as Vittoriosa on their route map). Get your tickets in advance here!
Airport transfers
If you decide to stay in Birgu, it’s easy to book an airport transfer for pickup at Malta International Airport. A private taxi transfer costs around €25 (one way).
Hotels and self-catering apartments in Birgu
Although there are no large hotels in Birgu, there are still a couple of options for those seeking accommodation in this quiet little city.
Self-catering holiday lets
- Apartment St. Angelo Mansions is located between the waterfront and Fort St. Angelo. Eight Point Living is a similar option to consider, as is Grand Harbour View .
- D-House is a townhouse in the centre of Birgu. Although it’s not super modern, it has all the facilities most people need and has air conditioning (a big plus in summer). 16 Lettings is a similar but a little more modern option to consider. The cleanly renovated traditional home Kharmen A 1565s offers a similar experience.
- Looking for something a little more luxurious with beautiful harbour views? Have a look at Casa Cara .
Hotels and B&Bs
There are a few boutique hotels that offer quality accommodation in Birgu. Even though they’d obviously be pricier, they are nevertheless good options to consider if you’re not on a budget.
- Locanda La Gelsomina is one of the most luxurious boutique hotels in Birgu, with a beautifully decorated interior and all the luxury you’d expect from an establishment with high standards.
- Palazzino Birgu Host Family is a beautiful, peaceful old townhouse in the heart of Birgu, full of character and superbly renovated with every comfort and convenience. This is, however, a B&B rather than a hotel.
- No. 17 is a guesthouse rather than a boutique hotel but is worth mentioning as a more affordable option that offers good value. Located in the old part of town in a refurbished house, you get comfort at reasonable rates here.
Dining in Birgu
A concentration of restaurants can be found on the Birgu waterfront, where weather permitting, one can eat outdoors with views of the marina and the sea. Hidden in the narrow winding streets of the Collachio, there are some places that, although lacking the views of the harbour, can offer a unique intimate dining/wining experience.
Birgu restaurants
Although you’ll find the highest concentration of restaurants in Birgu at its waterfront lined with yachts, some of the better places lie tucked away in its narrow streets and alleys.
This is the selection of restaurants I would recommend trying:
- Del Borgo (33 San Duminku. Tel: +356 2180 3710 | €€-€€€) – a restaurant and wine cellar boasting a list of over 300 wines. It offers Maltese food with a modern touch in a classical wine bar setting of vaulted stone arches and dim, soft lighting. A great option all year round, although without tables outside, there are better options in summer.
- BeBirgu (Misrah ir-Rebha. Tel: +356 7722 0077 | €€-€€€) – is a lovely little restaurant at Birgu main square housed in an old palace, Palazzo Huesca, which is also the local band club of St Lawrence. Aside from the great backdrop, it’s a great option for casual dining, as well as breakfast and lunch. Tasty food, varied menu and good service.
- Cargo Bar & Dine (Xatt Tal-Birgu. Tel: +356 2180 4804 | €€-€€€) – Good option for light meals, including a variety of seafood dishes at reasonable prices and a nice seafront outdoor terrace.
- Don Berto (Birgu Waterfront. Tel: +356 2180 8008 | €€-€€€) – A busy restaurant offering a varied Mediterranean menu with good quality food. It offers balcony seating with views of the harbour. The only downside? The service isn’t always very efficient.
- Tal-Petut (20 Triq Pacifiku Scicluna. Tel: +356 2189 1169 | €€€) – a great little restaurant to get a taste of traditional as well as innovative Maltese cuisine . The owner and chef prepares traditional local food with a passion for fresh local ingredients and the heritage that his food represents.
Special events in Birgu
In Birgu, there are 5 recurring events throughout the year. These include:
- 2 Religious feasts – that of Saint Lawrence, celebrated every year on the 10th of August and that of Saint Dominic, held every last Sunday of August. Typical of Maltese tradition, festas are characterised by a religious procession around the city with the statue of the patron saint, street decorations, fireworks, brass bands playing music in the streets and great celebrations. Food stalls selling local sweets, ice-creams and fast foods are set up in the squares.
- Birgufest/Birgu by candlelight – an event that continues to gain popularity year after year. This event highlights Birgu’s historic and architectural beauty with numerous activities, including re-enactments, art exhibitions, concerts, popular games, discounted museum admission fees and access to venues of interest. Birgu by Candlelight, a part of Birgufest, is a festival of lights that lights up the streets in a gentle glow with thousands of candles.
- Jum il-Birgu (Birgu day) – celebrated annually on the 7th of September. Activities include band parades held around the main streets of Birgu and several religious functions.
- Jum il-Ħelsien (Freedom Day) – celebrated annually on the 31st of March. Celebrations include the traditional regatta race (in which specially designed rowing boats compete within the Grand Harbour) and a military parade next to the Freedom Day monument on the centre square.

The noble military provenance of the Vittoriosa Waterfront has given way through the centuries to the glamour of the super-yachts that now speckle the dedicated dockyard. Vittoriosa’s wharf has been in use since Phoenician times. It was the primary naval base of the Knights of St John, and later of the Royal Navy. The Maritime Museum occupies what was once the British Naval Bakery, whilst the Casinò di Venezia is situated in the building of the former British Admiralty. The Vittoriosa Waterfront is now home to an array of fine restaurants, and provides a resplendent setting for a relaxed lunch or evening meal.

The Vittoriosa Grand Harbour Marina has established itself as one of the best marinas to luxurious yachts in the Mediterranean region. Last year, 160 yachts owned by millionaires anchored at the marina that is gaining a good reputation for its services and the scenery it offers.
Mr Lawrence Zammit, chairman of the Grand Harbour Marina, said that the Vittoriosa marina is one of the most popular in the Mediterranean, especially with superyachts owners due to the large space for mooring of superyachts.
He said that the position of the Grand Harbour Marina with Fort St Angelo and Valletta fortifications as a background make this marina one of the most spectacular in the region.
In an interview with ‘The Superyacht Group’, First Officer of the M/Y Fusion superyacht – Jay Deakin – said that the Vittoriosa Grand Harbour Marina is his favourite location. He said that the first time he visit the marina he was impressed by the rich and cultural history of the country.
Mr Deakin said that the shelter that the natural port provides against elements was an important factor on his decision to bring the superyacht at the Vittiorios marina, together with the price and work quality he experienced in Malta.

Uncover the stories of the Knights of St. John, wander through the heart of the city in the Collachio, and marvel at the beauty of the Church of St. Lawrence. Join us on a journey through Vittoriosa's past and indulge in its revitalized present.
Vittoriosa, also known as Birgu, is a city that embodies the rich cultural heritage of Malta, taking visitors on a journey through time with its ancient walls, picturesque streets, and captivating stories. With a history spanning over six centuries, Vittoriosa stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of its people. Let us delve into the allure of this captivating city and explore its captivating past.
Stepping into Vittoriosa is akin to stepping back in time. The city's origins date back to the Middle Ages when the Phoenicians established a settlement in the area. However, it was during the rule of the Knights of St. John, also known as the Knights Hospitaller, that Vittoriosa truly flourished. In the 16th century, the Knights made Vittoriosa their home and transformed it into a fortified city, establishing it as their main base of operations.
History and Heritage
The centerpiece of Vittoriosa is the imposing Fort St. Angelo, which sits majestically at the entrance of the Grand Harbor. This formidable fortress played a pivotal role in Malta's history, witnessing countless battles and sieges. Its strategic location granted it control over the harbor, making it an essential stronghold for the defense of the island. Walking through the gates of Fort St. Angelo, visitors can explore its bastions, ramparts, and underground tunnels, while immersing themselves in the echoes of a bygone era.
Beyond Fort St. Angelo, Vittoriosa's narrow streets beckon visitors to wander and discover its hidden treasures. The city's architecture is a testament to its layered history, with influences from the Phoenicians, Arabs, Normans, and more prominently, the Knights of St. John. Strolling through the winding alleys, one can admire the beautifully preserved limestone buildings adorned with colorful balconies and wooden shutters, creating a harmonious blend of styles and eras.
The Collachio: Heart of Vittoriosa
The heart of Vittoriosa is undoubtedly the Collachio, the historic core of the city. Here, the Knights built their residences, each one a testament to the grandeur and opulence of their order. The magnificent Auberges, which served as lodging for the different Langues (or nationalities) of the Knights, line the main square, displaying intricate details and heraldry that pay homage to the order's diverse origins. The Auberge de Castille, now the office of the Prime Minister of Malta, is a prime example of Baroque architecture and a true architectural marvel.
The Church of St. Lawrence
One cannot speak of Vittoriosa without mentioning the Church of St. Lawrence. Dedicated to the patron saint of the city, this awe-inspiring church is a masterpiece of Baroque architecture. The ornate interior, adorned with gilded sculptures, frescoes, and intricate marble work, transports visitors to a world of grandeur and religious devotion. The church's centerpiece is the magnificent titular painting, "The Beheading of St. Lawrence," by Mattia Preti, one of the most renowned artists of the Baroque period.
Vittoriosa by Sunset
As the sun begins to set over Vittoriosa, the city takes on a new and enchanting character. The golden hues reflect off the limestone facades, casting a warm glow on the cobblestone streets. The narrow waterfront promenade, known as the Vittoriosa Marina, comes alive with the gentle clinking of yacht masts and the buzz of restaurants and cafes. It is the perfect spot to savor a delightful meal while enjoying panoramic views of the harbor and the nearby cities of Senglea and Cospicua.
Revitalization and Cultural Events
In recent years, Vittoriosa has seen a resurgence in popularity as a tourist destination. The restoration and preservation efforts undertaken by the local authorities have breathed new life into the city, making it a must-visit for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and those seeking an authentic and immersive experience. The city's narrow streets are now home to art galleries, boutique hotels, and quaint shops, offering visitors a chance to indulge in the local culture and craftsmanship.
Moreover, Vittoriosa hosts various cultural events throughout the year, attracting both locals and international visitors. The Vittoriosa Wine Festival, held annually in August, showcases Malta's finest wines accompanied by live music and traditional Maltese cuisine. The Birgufest, a three-day celebration in October, brings the city's history to life through reenactments, historical tours, and vibrant street performances, offering a unique opportunity to experience Vittoriosa's past in a truly immersive way.
Vittoriosa stands as a living testament to Malta's rich and diverse heritage. Its timeless charm, fortified walls, and architectural marvels serve as a gateway to the island's storied past. From the grandeur of Fort St. Angelo to the winding streets of the Collachio, Vittoriosa offers a captivating journey through history, allowing visitors to unravel the layers of its past. As the city continues to preserve its cultural legacy, it invites travelers to embark on an unforgettable voyage into the soul of Malta, leaving an indelible mark on all those who venture within its walls.
