The stats speak for themselves: the charter market grew 138 per cent from 2015 to 2023, according to MYBA, The Worldwide Yachting Association, as more and more people discovered the joys of chartering a superyacht ( page 108 ). Covid-19 provided plenty of extra oomph as the boat-minded sought ways to escape the pandemic when resorts were closing their doors, and the experts don’t expect this pace of growth to slow. “Once you try yachting, you stay in yachting, and you tell your friends,” says Raphael Sauleau, CEO of IYC and current MYBA president, referencing all the new charterers that have discovered the industry over the last few years.
What’s fascinating to me are the areas seeing the biggest growth in charter. Lots of insiders are getting excited about Greece as charter laws in that country are liberalised , and we can expect a greater eastward migration of Med charter yachts as a result, but it’s destinations further afield that are seeing the most dramatic growth – Indonesia, for instance, the Arabian Gulf and the UAE. The increasing popularity of chartering out of Dubai will be music to the ears of Aaron Fidler, this month’s Owners’ Club interviewee. The chief-engineer-turned-superyacht-owner’s gold-flecked 41.4-metre Palmer Johnson is set up to capture the charter market in the emirate, packed as it is with the latest toys. This story is an inspiration for anyone who’s longed to drop the lines and grab a drink. “I wanted to be the one drinking cocktails on the aft deck,” he says on page 80. According to MYBA, he’s not alone. I urge all owners of charter yachts to dig through our exclusive report on the state of the charter industry in this issue.

SA Yachting Magazine Completely Digitised
Today I completed digitising every issue of SA Yachting Magazine published since the very first issue in November/December 1957 until October 1999. These are all now word-searchable PDF files.
That is a total of 461 magazines, with an estimated total number of pages between 25 and 30 000. It’s a lot of info to digest, and a great relief to have now completed this task.
I have the final 13 years of SAILING Magazine digitised, and will soon start completing that task – scanning from July 1984 to December 2004.
My archives are being populated daily with new info and pics on the sport of sailing in Southern Africa, with the road ahead long yet interesting as I find new material and get reminded about people, events, boats and Club doings that I had forgotten!
So now I have a set of SA Yachting mags to give away to a worthy cause. Contact me if you are interested in them – [email protected]
I may also consider parting with the bound volumes, but only should a really worthy cause require them and will guarantee their survival.

New Flagship for Bering Yachts: The B165
- By Yachting Staff
- March 19, 2024
Bering Yachts , known for its steel expedition-style trawler yachts, introduced a new flagship B165 explorer yacht at the Dubai International Boat Show.
“She keeps all the ruggedness, stability, range and all-weather capability while representing a Mediterranean and Caribbean approach to life: easygoing, relaxed and full of comfort,” the company stated in a press release. “You are still traveling in your home, but with so much more open space and fresh air that the onboard life becomes a full-circle indoor and outdoor experience.”
The shipyard describes the B165 as “Bering to the bone, but with a luxury twist.” On the main deck’s elongated after section, there’s a swimming pool surrounded by sunbeds. Folding bulwarks can expand this relaxation even more, and the pool can be covered for use as stowage for water toys and other equipment. There’s also space here for two tenders.
Inside on the main deck are dining and lounging areas, along with two VIP staterooms. An additional room at the bow can be outfitted as a guest stateroom, or as an onboard cinema.
The owners’ deck has more than 750 square feet of space, including a sleeping area, a head, and a lounge with a bar, table and seating. An open space aft on the owners’ deck has a table for alfresco dining, while at the bow, there’s a hot tub and a lounge. Crew have access to a private service room for preparing and serving meals, with a dumbwaiter that connects to a similar service area on the main deck, and to the galley on the lower deck.
Also on the lower deck are three guest staterooms, four cabins to accommodate eight crew, and a crew mess. An additional cabin on this deck can be used for supernumeraries such as nannies, guides and masseurs.
Up on the bridge deck, there’s a lounge with a bar, an outdoor cinema, a day head and a firepit. The captain’s quarters are here as well.
Above that deck is a crow’s nest with a hardtop where guests can have an unobstructed 360-degree view of the yacht’s surroundings.
Eco-friendly design is also inherent in the Bering 165, according to company founder Alexei Mikhailov: “We are building responsibly. Designing a large engine room, we definitely had alternative energy solutions in mind. There is plenty of space to accommodate hybrid applications and install a big battery bank.”
Power for the 499-gross-ton vessel will be twin 1,300-horsepower Caterpillar C32 engines, with a reported cruise speed of 12 knots and a maximum speed of 15 knots. Fuel capacity is nearly 18,500 gallons, which the team at Bering says gives the B165 a range of more than 4,000 nautical miles. ABT-Trac systems are installed for guest comfort.
Does the Bering Yachts B165 have a steel hull? Yes, with an aluminum superstructure.
