Young Professionals in Yachting

YPY Association logo 200

The yachting industry is not always kind to its young and inexperienced – especially when it comes to the land-based sector. It’s almost as if everyone is expected to come in with 10 years under their belt, along with some physical manifestation of age and fatigue or an extensive contact list.

“There’s this idea of: I want you to be an expert but I don’t want to teach you,” says John Jarvie, the vice president of Oversea Insurance. “I don’t think that’s really fair and it’s not creating a better industry.”

This, of course, is impossible for many people – and especially for the slew of young faces showing up every year at the Monaco and Fort Lauderdale boat shows.

However, in 2009, a group of young people in Fort Lauderdale got together and founded an organization meant to change all that. It was called Young Professionals in Yachting (YPY), and the idea was to offer a welcoming platform where young, land-based professionals could learn more about the industry and to give them a sense of support and community.

From humble beginnings it has grown in recent years into a burgeoning organization of more than 200 dedicated members on both sides of the Atlantic.

This year at the Monaco Yacht Show, YPY hosted an international networking breakfast with a heavy push for young professionals from the U.K., as both the Monaco and South Florida Chapters are keen to establish a London Chapter.

"I felt it was critical to focus on professional development since networking and socializing would happen automatically," Kiernan says. "Our first monthly meetings alternated between professional development seminars, such as a Dale Carnegie course, and having industry veterans as guest speakers...The early support from senior executives in the industry was overwhelming and ultimately critical to the development of the organization."

Jarvie had grown up in San Diego, where his great-grandfather started Oversea Insurance. After university, he went back and started working for the family business, eventually moving to Fort Lauderdale in 2009 to open up a South Florida office.

Meet the Young Professional Maintaining Financial and Personal Well Being by Staying With Parents

Increasing rent, a rising cost of living, and a healthy work-life balance are key concerns for most young people in this day and age. But all these can be addressed by making a simple change in lifestyle.

Sal Khan, a 31-year-old tech sales professional, has found a unique way to thrive financially while also nurturing his relationships with his family. With a salary of $220,000 per year and several investment properties, Khan is well-positioned for financial success. However, what sets him apart is his decision to live with his parents in Houston rent-free.

Khan's journey to this arrangement began in his childhood in Pakistan, where he grew up as the youngest of five siblings. As his older siblings gradually moved to the United States for education and work opportunities, Khan remained in Pakistan under the care of his grandfather. Eventually, in 2013, at the age of 20, Khan joined his family in the US after his parents sponsored his visa.

After completing his education and working in the Bay Area for a few years, Khan found himself facing the uncertainty of the pandemic in 2020. With his lease ending and the opportunity to work remotely, he made the decision to temporarily move in with his parents in Houston. However, what started as a short-term solution became a long-term arrangement.

Living with his parents not only allows Khan to save significantly on housing expenses but also strengthens his relationship with them. As the youngest child who spent roughly 10 years away from his parents, Khan saw it as an opportunity to make up for lost time and improve their bond. Furthermore, there is a cultural aspect to it, as Khan feels a sense of duty to take care of his parents in their retirement years.

Despite the financial benefits, living with parents does come with its challenges, particularly in terms of personal space and independence. Khan acknowledges the need for clear communication and boundaries to maintain a healthy living arrangement.

In addition to supporting his parents financially by covering miscellaneous expenses and giving his mother a monthly gift, Khan is also actively involved in their daily lives, accompanying his father to medical appointments and ensuring his mother's transportation needs are met.

One aspect of Khan's life that has been impacted by his living arrangement is his dating life. While some potential partners may not understand his choice to live with his parents, Khan has found understanding and support from his girlfriend, who also lives with her parents. They prioritize spending quality time together outside of their respective homes, going on dates, and traveling together.

Financially, Khan is focused on building his investment portfolio, particularly in real estate. With four properties in his portfolio and plans to expand further, Khan is committed to maximizing his earnings and achieving financial independence. His goal is to continue minimizing living expenses and investing in real estate, with the eventual plan of moving out and bringing his parents with him to a new home.

Ultimately, Khan sees his decision to live with his parents as a choice that he is grateful for.

Adelaide United and Young Matildas player Grace Wilson

Young Matildas player Grace Wilson becomes first professional Australian footballer to come out as non-binary

  • Wilson says making announcement came as huge relief
  • Adelaide United teammates had ‘phenomenal reaction’ to news

Adelaide United and Young Matildas player Grace Wilson has been hailed for their bravery after becoming the first professional footballer in Australia to come out as non-binary.

The goalkeeper shared that they are non-binary on Friday amid widespread support from teammates, management and staff at the A-League Women’s club.

“This was the first step in my journey, but I had a phenomenal reaction,” Wilson said.

“The girls were lovely about it and I got a hug from every player. As soon as I said it, cheers, and applause – it was this lovely thing.

“I felt so comfortable and supported, it was probably one of the best feelings.”

Wilson is considered a bright talent and was last month selected in the Young Matildas squad to take part in the AFC Under-20 Women’s Asian Cup later this month in Uzbekistan.

Wilson said their perception of gender does not fit into the western standards of man and woman, and that finally making the announcement came as a huge relief to them.

“Every non-binary person experiences this differently,” Wilson told Holly Ransom, Pride Cup board chair. “As a kid, I didn’t see that things were supposed to be for girls or for boys but I was taught that as I grew up.

“You don’t realise how much of a difference it makes. Being referred to as ‘they/them’ for the first time gave me this euphoric feeling. I just wanted to be free.”

There may be other players in the ALW who identify as non-binary, but Wilson is the first to come out publicly. AFLW star Darcy Vescio became the second AFLW player to come out as non-binary in 2021, following in the footsteps of Tori Groves-Little.

Adelaide United has been vocal in its championing of gender equality in the past, and was supportive of men’s player Josh Cavallo in 2021 when he came out, becoming the only openly gay man playing in any top flight at the time.

after newsletter promotion

At the international level, Canada midfielder Quinn made history when they became the first transgender and non-binary person to appear at either a men’s or women’s World Cup last year.

“Adelaide United Football Club is proud to be at the forefront of this movement, championing equality both on and off the pitch,” a club statement read on Friday.

Adelaide’s head of football, Marius Zanin, said: “We stand behind Grace wholeheartedly and commend their bravery in sharing their authentic self with the world.

“At Adelaide United, we believe in fostering an inclusive and welcoming environment for all individuals, regardless of gender identity.”

What Player is Best Suited for Challenging Conditions in Singapore?

Jin Young Ko

Jin Young Ko is the two-time defending champion at the HSBC Women’s World Championship, and after looking at how she won back-to-back, she appears poised to win number three.

The LPGA Tour’s annual stop in Singapore starts Wednesday night so let’s get started. The HSBC Women’s World Championship has been contested at Sentosa Golf Club since 2013 and at the Tanjong Course since 2017. The par-72 scorecard stretches almost to 6,800 yards, long by LPGA standards, but you have to consider we are at sea level in Southeast Asia. Throw in 54 bunkers and 12 holes where water comes into play, and the Tanjong Course will serve as a true test for “Asia’s Major.”

The elite field of 66 players will compete over 72 holes to compete, and for the second week in a row, there isn’t a cut. Each of the players who have won the HSBC Women’s World Championship on the Tanjong Course since 2017 also happens to be a major champion. But that’s just scratching the surface of what it takes to win here. The tree-lined course weaves its way through an island just off the southern coast of Singapore and has outrageously large green complexes measuring 10,600 square feet on average.

Over 150 trees have been added to the design in recent years. We have four par 3s with an average length of 183 yards, four par 5s with an average length of 531 yards and 10 par 4s with an average length of 389 yards. Looking at the par 3s, each will require a mid-to-long iron approach. The best par-3 players in the field – Jin Young Ko, Celine Boutier, Haeran Ryu and Yuka Saso – should have an edge based on their ability to score on these holes.

The last four holes have penalty areas lurking in play, and that won’t be the only water the field sees as, similarly to last year, the forecast calls for almost two inches of rain. Get out the umbrellas and the drivers. A long course is just going to play longer under these soft conditions, but the fairways may see some roll, as the course was designed with the Australian sand-belt layouts in mind.

Those wet conditions probably won’t see the greens stay firm, opening the door for eight of the top 10 and 20 of the top 30 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings to throw darts at these hole locations. Excellent approach players like Nasa Hataoka, Lydia Ko, Boutier and Hye-Jin Choi will definitely have an advantage. Two-time defending champion Jin Young Ko is a greens in regulation machine. She has hit 86 percent of her greens in regulation over the past two years en route to victory Choi, (Lydia) Ko and Hataoka also hit a ton of greens in regulation and should have your attention.

Consider the contenders finishing in the top 10 the past two years at Sentosa Golf Club just behind Jin Young Ko. Those 20 players averaged the following statistics on the Tanjong Course:

  • Strokes gained off the tee: 1.8
  • Strokes gained approach: 4.8
  • Strokes gained around the green: 0.0
  • Strokes gained putting: 2.5
  • Greens in regulation: 80.5%
  • Sub-par scores: 19.5
  • Scrambling: 71%

While the par 3s are challenging, if you look at Jin Young Ko’s killer run, she was able to survive the par 3s, attack the par 5s and distance herself on the par 4s. The Tanjong Course has a difficult set of 10 par 4s, and Hyo Joo Kim, Brooke Henderson, Lydia Ko and Sei Young Kim have played the par 4s the best so far in 2024.

Between the weather and the LPGA Tour’s top talent who are competing, the competition will be a must-watch. This event truly provides a great test of golf, and winning means you have played really well. I am strongly considering Jin Young Ko as the winner on my betting card. Her T20 finish last week which was bookended by 68s shows she’s healthy after the break, and her two wins in Singapore match the trend of Republic of Korea winners as each of the last nine HSBC Women’s World Championships have come from her home country.

When it comes to picking outright winners, it all counts. Consider the highlighted players above and those who you think will win the fourth event of the season. Enjoy the golf and don’t forget, the action starts Wednesday night!

Seoul gives young doctors 4 days to end walkouts, threatening suspended licenses and prosecutions

Thousands of junior doctors in South Korea have been refusing to see patients and attend surgeries for a week in anger over the government’s push to recruit more medical students. Their joint strikes are now at a critical juncture, with authorities warning that they have until Thursday to return to work or face the suspensions of their licenses and prosecutions. (Feb. 27)

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Junior doctors in South Korea have four days to end their walkouts or they will have their medical licenses suspended and face prosecution, the government said Monday.

About 9,000 medical interns and residents have stayed off the job since early last week to protest a government plan to increase medical school admissions by about 65%. The walkouts have severely hurt the operations of their hospitals, with numerous cancellations of surgeries and other treatments.

Government officials say adding more doctors is necessary to deal with South Korea’s rapidly aging population. The country’s current doctor-to-patient ratio is among the lowest in the developed world.

The strikers say universities can’t handle so many new students and argue the plan would not resolve a chronic shortage of doctors in some key but low-paying areas like pediatrics and emergency departments.

Vice Health Minister Park Min-soo said during a televised briefing Monday that the government won’t seek any disciplinary action against striking doctors if they return to work by Thursday.

“We want them to return to work by the end of this month, Feb. 29. If they return to the hospitals they had left by then, we won’t hold them responsible” for any damage caused by their walkouts, Park said. “It’s not too late. Please, return to patients immediately.”

But he said those who don’t meet the deadline will be punished with a minimum three-month suspension of their medical licenses and face further legal steps such as investigations and possible indictments.

Under South Korea’s medical law, the government can issue back-to-work orders to doctors and other medical personnel when it sees grave risks to public health. Refusing to abide by such an order can bring suspensions of their licenses and up to three years in prison or a 30 million won ($22,480) fine. Those who receive prison sentences would be stripped of their medical licenses.

Hyeondeok Choi, a partner at the law firm Daeryun which specializes in medical law, said it’s highly unlikely the government will suspend the licenses of all doctors on strike, as that would cause “an enormous medical vacuum.” Other observers said authorities would likely punish strike leaders.

There are about 13,000 medical interns and residents in South Korea, most of them working and training at 100 hospitals. They typically assist senior doctors during surgeries and deal with inpatients. They represent about 30% to 40% of total doctors at some major hospitals.

The Korea Medical Association, which represents about 140,000 doctors, has said it supports the striking doctors but hasn’t determined whether to join the trainee doctors’ walkouts. Senior doctors have held a series of rallies voicing opposition to the government’s plan in recent days.

Earlier this month, the government announced universities would admit 2,000 more medical students starting next year, from the current 3,058. The government says it aims to add up to 10,000 doctors by 2035.

Striking doctors have said they worry doctors faced with increased competition would engage in overtreatment, burdening public medical expenses.

A public survey showed that about 80% of South Koreans back the plan. Critics suspect doctors, one of the best-paid professions in South Korea, oppose the recruitment plan because they worry they would face greater competition and lower incomes.

Park said the country’s medical services for emergency and critical patients remain stable, with public medical facilities extending their working hours and military hospitals opening emergency rooms to ordinary patients. But local media reported that an octogenarian suffering a cardiac arrest was declared dead last Friday after seven hospitals turned her away citing a lack of medical staff or other reasons likely related to the walkouts.

Hwang Byung-tae, a 55-year-old laryngeal cancer patient, said he has regularly visited a Seoul hospital for treatment for four years. Last week, he said he had to leave the hospital without receiving an anti-cancer injection because of the walkouts.

Hwang accused both the government and doctors of holding the lives of patients hostage. “It’s patients like me who end up suffering and dying, not them,” Hwang said.

Cognizant Classic: Young star Nick Dunlap surges to contention after hole-in-one

young yachting professionals

PALM BEACH GARDENS — One of the most exciting young players in professional golf surged into contention with a hole-in-one on Friday afternoon at the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches.

Nick Dunlap carded an ace on No. 7 at the PGA National Champion Course to move to 8-under for the tournament and one stroke off the lead held by Victor Perez and Kevin Yu. It was the first hole-in-one of Dunlap's brief professional career.

Dunlap shot 4-under 67 in the first round and opened his second round birdie-bogey-eagle before his hole-in-one. He made the turn at 8-under and trailed only Perez, Yu and Austin Eckroat.

Dunlap faded off the lead early in his back nine after a string of missed tee shots.

He lost his drive out of bounds on No. 10 and settled for bogey to drop to 7-under, three shots back of Eckroat's lead at 10-under. Dunlap drifted further back after missing the fairway again on No. 11, settling for bogey and dropping to 6-under. He again missed the fairway and bogeyed No. 12 to drop five strokes off Eckroat.

Dunlap finished 1-under for his second round and 5-under for the tournament to make the cut for the first time in his career as a pro.

His success at the Cognizant Classic continues a sizzling season that has seen the 20-year-old become one of golf's top young players.

Dunlap began 2024 as a sophomore collegiate golfer at the University of Alabama but decided to turn pro after a historic victory in January at The American Express in California. Dunlap shot 29-under to win the tournament by one stroke, becoming the first amateur in 33 years (Phil Mickelson, 1991 Tucson Open) to win a PGA Tour event.

He played in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a no-cut event, in early February and missed the cut at the Genesis Invitational in his most recent event.

Despite growing winds and rain in the afternoon, golfers saw some success on No. 7 — a 197-yard par-3 — and Dunlap wasn't the first player to go after the pin.

In the previous group, reigning tournament champion Chris Kirk hit the pin with his tee shot. The ball trickled 2 feet away and Kirk tapped in for a birdie.

Thomas Detry records rare six-putt

Belgian Thomas Detry stumbled to a quadruple bogey on the par-4 No. 6, a lowlight only made worse by the number of putts he took to finish.

Detry, who shot 2-over in the first round and was 4-over for the tournament entering the hole, needed six putts to finish after hitting the green in regulation.

He was visibly frustrated after missing an 8-foot par putt and appeared to rush through three more missed attempts before eventually making a 3-footer.

Detry struggled through the rest of the round, finishing dead last with an 11-over for the tournament.

8-year-old belts out passionate national anthem rendition at pacers game, indiana pacers 8-year-old belts out anthem at game ... epic rendition, 413 2/28/2024 8:04 am pt.

An 8-year-old girl belted out an ultra-passionate rendition of the national anthem at a Pacers game earlier this week ... and it was so epic, the team praised it as an "unmatched" performance!

The youngster's name is Kinsley Murray -- and after gaining fame for singing pregame anthems all across the country -- Indiana tapped her to grab the microphone just prior to its tip-off on Monday against the Toronto Raptors.

Waiting for your permission to load TikTok Post.

Murray -- decked out in a red, white and blue dress -- first sang "O Canada" ... before she began her confident version of "The Star-Spangled Banner."

Check out video from the Gainbridge Fieldhouse court ... Murray attacked all of the high notes with a whole lot of flare -- and the crowd roared every time.

Afterward, the Pacers took to TikTok to applaud the show.

"The passion. The oufit," the team wrote. "This anthem performance was unmatched."

Murray, though, has been crushing the song long before the NBA world got its glimpse of her this week ... as she's been croonin' at games since she was at least 6 years old!!

In fact, Murray cruised over to the Dayton vs Davidson game the night after her Pacers show ... to wow the crowd in Ohio.

Unclear what game's up next for Murray ... but something tells us an "American Idol" audition might be down the road.
