80 foot yacht guide: how to buy a yacht in this booming category.

  • June 29, 2019

Image 1639: yacht deck

The 80 foot yacht range is an important line in the yachting industry as many consider this the start of the superyacht category. For instance, Boatinternational.com begins tracking superyacht sales and build data of yachts around the globe of vessels 24 meters in length (78-79 feet).

And what does this data say? Well,  Boat International  indicates that in 2019, the 24-27 meter category is the fastest growing superyacht size range according to its  global order book data . At 228 yachts in this range, it represents the highest number of yachts in the 24-27 meter range under construction since 2009. Up from 182, the increase to 228 projects represents a 25.3% increase in production year over year. This compares to an overall 7.37% increase in superyacht construction across all size categories worldwide.

Boat International’s global order book goes on to explain that this category has boomed in part due to the increased investment in model development by some of the world’s top yacht builders. Yards such as Princess, Azimut and Sanlorenzo have seen some of their models in this range shine with demand outpacing production. All told, the 80 foot yacht category is booming.

When purchasing an 80 foot yacht, the complexity of the product and purchase process increases when compared to, say, acquiring a yacht 60 feet and under. Walking through the potential use cases, guest accommodations, range and other amenities with an experienced yacht broker will typically yield the best results in finding the best fit for a buyer.

While many yachts in this range are outfitted with crew quarters, it’s not unheard of for owners to operate a yacht of this size by themselves due to new technology and features. For instance, bow and stern thrusters plus wireless docking controllers can enable owners to run and dock the yacht themselves. Still, on extended trips, even owner/operators can opt for crew to assist with operation and regular upkeep work along the way. Of course, many owners of yachts in this size range opt for crew to handle the operations for all use cases.

Exploring the particular yacht types can be an important starting point for matching the best 80 foot yacht to you and your family’s needs. Express yachts (also referred to as express cruisers or sport cruisers) are yachts with a single deck above the hull paired with a living space below deck.

The flybridge or sedan bridge yacht refers to a yacht that includes an additional space above the main deck. This additional level is sometimes also called a command bridge or an enclosed bridge. It typically contains a control station and often an additional entertaining space.

Interior Layout

With yachts in the 80 foot range, the interior layout can vary widely depending on the model. Furthermore, a wide variety of options and amenities are available to suit your yachting lifestyle. A spacious salon with plentiful seating, dining and entertaining spaces is typical. Below deck, four or more cabins with an impressive master suite is to be expected. Additional crew quarters are common as well.

Image 1641: yacht bedroom

The finishes inside will often depend on the model and age of the yacht as well as previous owner tastes. If building a new yacht, the buyer will be able to tailor many of the finishes and interior selections around his or her exact tastes.

Considerations when buying a 80 foot yacht

If new to yachting, gaining solid experience and familiarity with yachts can be a crucial step in the process to buying a yacht. Many times this can be accomplished through chartering a yacht. Gaining familiarity through the use and operation of a yacht can be quite helpful in achieving clarity on needs and wants around a yacht purchase. What features and amenities did you notice are crucial to operation and life aboard the vessel? Do you anticipate needing crew? Is a smaller, easier-to-operate yacht more important to you or do you prefer maximum luxury and a longer range? Experience aboard a yacht will help you answer such questions.

As always, the budget is a key parameter when narrowing down your yacht options. There is always a bigger and more expensive yacht, so attempt to identify a price range that you are comfortable with while also factoring in maintenance, upkeep and operating expenses.

Image 1640: hatteras

Leveraging a yacht broker to identify an initial list of yacht options to consider is a great next step. When looking at pre-owned yachts, there will always be a trade-off between age and size that the buyer will need to navigate. While newer boats will typically have less maintenance and upkeep costs, a pre-owned vessel can mean getting into a larger boat. The advice of a yacht broker is crucial at this stage of the purchase process.

Designing a custom new yacht is also a potential option for yacht buyers. The owner can participate throughout the entire build process from the earliest design phases to the launch of the yacht. Moreover, a semi-custom approach is possible through yacht manufacturers that permit owners to modify a production model to build. Of course, choosing the proper option based on your needs is easier with an experienced yacht broker at your side.

Resale value of the yacht – while perhaps not the most important consideration at the time of buying a yacht – is still something worth considering and discussing with your broker. The resale value of the yacht is mostly dictated by the quality of the build and finish, maintenance of the vessel during the years of operation, the age of the boat and the overall market conditions at the time of sale.

To conclude, with the complexity involved in purchasing an 80 foot yacht and the investment typically required, the process will often go as smooth as the yacht broker at your side. Ensure that your yacht broker has experience with the particular yacht type, size range and even model being considered. Not all yacht brokers are the same, and while many out there will claim expertise for any yacht category, ask the right questions to ensure they can properly advise with respect to the specifics of the potential transaction approaching.

Tom George Yacht Group yacht brokers focus on life-long relationships with clients and emphasize the long-term success of every transaction. TGYG brokers provide trustworthy guidance and assistance throughout not just the purchase process but through years of ownership as well.

ClubSwan 80 review: full-on 80ft racer

Matthew Sheahan

  • Matthew Sheahan
  • November 25, 2022

The latest My Song is the first new ClubSwan 80, a maxi-sized one-design racer-cruiser. Matthew Sheahan got the first sail in Sardinia

Product Overview

As we slipped our lines from the dock in Porto Cervo I was trying to conceal my disappointment. After being present at the original launch of the design for the new ClubSwan 80 at the Düsseldorf Boat Show back in 2019 I’d been looking forward to the opportunity to climb aboard this super sleek, no holds barred, full carbon racing machine.

Now it was a reality, but as we headed out through the rocky entrance to this famous harbour, I was cursing my luck as the forecast light and fickle breeze had arrived and showed every sign of refusing to climb into double figures. Instead, the 8 knots that was currently on offer was hardly great testing weather for a boat that promised so much.

Yet, minutes later, with no increase in the breeze or change in the calm-looking sea state, there were suddenly 14 pairs of legs draped over her windward topsides and 14 heads had popped through the guardwires. Our keel was fully canted and visible for all to see as our upwind boat speed sat at 9-10 knots. Now the apparent wind speed was in the high teens.

In just a couple of minutes the act of setting sail and sheeting in had transformed the feel of the day and provided the first clue as to what the ClubSwan 80 is about. But it had also shown why it was best not to jump to any early conclusions.

Not just stunningly clean, the ClubSwan 80 proved slippery downwind, even if it feels like you’re heading upwind. Photo: Luca Butto

Why one-design?

The route from concept to reality had been a long one for the ClubSwan 80, thanks in part to the challenges that the global pandemic presented. The long gestation period had also allowed plenty of speculation as to why one of the biggest and best known quality builders in the world had decided to create a one-design class at the Maxi end of the scale.

Whatever the size, creating a new one-design class nowadays is a bold call and yet the motivation for creating a fleet of identical boats is clear.

For a builder, a one-design fleet makes sense from a financial point of view by spreading the development costs across the fleet you’re about to create. And if the class takes off and the build routine is established, the spreadsheet can look even better.

For owners, having the assurance there’ll be others to play with is also a strong incentive and helps to reduce the need to gamble on whether the boat will be as quick as her designers suggest. Safety in numbers makes it much easier for owners to consider taking the plunge.

80ft yacht cost

The upwind performance is impressive too given the non-overlapping headsail. Photo: Carlo Borlenghi

But as we know, the real world isn’t always like this. There have been plenty of one-design promises that simply haven’t delivered. In addition, attracting owners to one-design boats of over 70ft LOA is particularly tough as in this league owners like to, how shall we put it, express themselves with a customised design rather than risk the embarrassment of losing to others in identical boats. It’s much easier to blame the boat.

Nautor Swan believes it has a few trump cards, one of which is the success of its existing ClubSwan fleets. Its recent ClubSwan World Championships in Valencia provided a good example and drew 34 boats representing 13 nationalities across four classes – all of them strict one-design classes, all with an owner/driver rule.

80ft yacht cost

Among those fleets it was the ClubSwan 50 that was not just the biggest class present but a good indication as to why Swan thinks it can make a bigger boat work. The ClubSwan 50 is a class that many said originally wouldn’t succeed because the boats were too big for many owners and that there were other racing alternatives at this size. The detractors also pointed to the failure of other attempts at a 50ft one-design racing class.

But it turns out they were wrong. While Swan acknowledges that it’s unrealistic to just scale up a 50-footer to 80ft and expect a similar success, it also believes there is plenty it can take from its current achievements and experience.

Solid foundations

Buoyed by the success of their radical, Juan Kouyoumdjian-designed ClubSwan 36 on the one end and the 125ft carbon Skorpios at the other, a full-on 80ft racer looked like a good fit in the range.

Juan K was signed up once again, but this time Nautor’s own Finnish yard was already at capacity so Italian composite expert Persico was brought in as strategic partners to build the ClubSwan 80. The partnership is one that appears to have worked well to create a boat that has a sleek, elegant, and in many ways minimalist, low windage look. This is a yacht with beautiful lines from wherever you look.

80ft yacht cost

Under A3 kite we sat at 16+knots in 12-14 knots true. Photo: Richard Langdon

As you step aboard it is the simplicity of the wide open, clutter-free cockpit that strikes you first. Aside from the single mainsheet winch slap bang in the middle of the cockpit just next to the navigator’s access hatch, the area is so open that it looks like there is something missing. And of course there is – a winch grinding pedestal or two – because this is a Maxi with powered winches. So, whether trimming the jib or mainsheet, this is a design that has swapped biceps and brawn for a boat that is controlled largely by fingers and toes. There is of course nothing groundbreaking in this, but it is an indication of where the bar is set on the ClubSwan 80.

Another can be seen with the push button controls at the steering pedestals where the well positioned and tidy control stations for the canting keel and canard belie the sophistication of what lies deeper within.

“The very light displacement at just over 19 tonnes is achieved in part thanks to the canting keel,” explained Kouyoumdjian, “as we can achieve the same righting moment with about 25% less displacement. Being able to generate righting moment more efficiently means you can have a shallower draught and when you compare the hydraulics required with those for a lifting keel, the canting system is lighter and less complex.

80ft yacht cost

The running backstay turning blocks are covered with a fairing. Photo: Richard Langdon

“But a canting keel does have some downsides because the keel fin is being used to hold the bulb and not driving the boat upwind. Therefore, something else is required and in this case we have gone for a canard sitting in front of the keel that can be rotated plus or minus 8° in order to reduce the leeway and optimise performance.”

Meanwhile, back on deck the pit area is clean and tidy thanks to control lines that run under the deck, which also makes the foredeck more secure to move about on.

As you’d expect of a boat of this type, the chainplates run to the full width of the boat and when you look up at the three-spreader carbon rig the large square-headed mainsail says a great deal about the power this boat can generate, while the narrow sheeting angles on her jibs thanks to the two transverse sheet tracks illustrate the pointing ability of the ClubSwan 80.

Beyond this, the foredeck is completely clear apart from the foredeck hatch that doubles as a gennaker chute with a sock that runs all the way to the back of the boat.

“Clearly having a long bowsprit is an efficient way to fly the gennaker and Code sails but it also allows the jib to remain as the staysail of the boat,” continued Kouyoumdjian. “Not having to drop the jib helps with the handling of the boat while the retractable bowsprit makes the boat easier to manoeuvre during pre-starts and at close quarters.”

80ft yacht cost

Cruising fitout definition is questionable, but the modular approach to the dual role is clever and suits those who are more interested in performance. Photo: Stefano Gattini

What isn’t so apparent when looking at the deck is that the ClubSwan 80 is a boat that has also been designed with fast cruising in mind. Perhaps not quite the style of cruising where the spray dodger goes up and a tender gets slung beneath davits, but the kind of day sprints where the focus is short-handed fast sailing for the fun of it rather than the level of luxury when at rest.

While Juan K and others explained this alternative style of cruising, I still found it difficult to envisage such a sleek looking racer in a cruising role. Nevertheless, the owner of My Song has already done just that.

There has been a great deal of effort put into this aspect of the boat, especially below decks where Nauta Design has created an impressive looking interior using a variety of modules that can be slotted into place.

On deck, cruising modules have also been created to provide sofa benches in the cockpit which transforms into an outside dining area.

80ft yacht cost

The cavernous forward area makes for a huge owner’s cabin when the cruising module is in place, otherwise it’s simply open. Photo: Stefano Gattini

ClubSwan 80 – modular format

In the configuration we sailed her there were no cruising modules present, but subtle mahogany laminate strips and carefully placed LED lighting provide a surprisingly welcoming feel in what would normally be a carbon racing shell. They also provide references to the stylish renderings that show off the interior cruising style which interior experts Nauta has created.

“The brief was that this boat has to be transformed from a pure racer to cruising mode in a couple of days with the work of only two people,” said Martino Manjo of Nauta Design. “So, there’s a module that goes in the galley that is on top of the canting keel box and there are two modules which form the bed in the master cabin.

“We worked on making the structures part of the interiors, highlighting and underlining their presence.”

Just as on deck, it’s the space, volume and the uncluttered feel below that creates the first impressions. It’s a clever arrangement that will doubtless be overlooked when the 80 is being operated in racing mode. But look closely and it’s easy to see how the interior has been created around the structural items without giving the impression that you’re in a pre-preg carbon maze.

Moving aft as the deck starts to lower and the freeboard reduces, you enter more familiar racing territory where moving around towards the stern of the boat and the navigation station feels more like a caving expedition. But what else would you expect?

80ft yacht cost

Cushions on pipecots aft, a luxury only for cruising. Photo: Stefano Gattini

The other thing to strike me was the quality of her build. There is no paint or treatment to the inside faces of the pre-preg laminate, making it easy to see the precision with which the CS80 has been created. I accept that it’s nerdy to follow individual laminates and bonding areas, but workmanship at this level is impossible to ignore.

Numbers game

It was probably simply habit that had me jotting down performance numbers periodically during our sea trials, which were part of My Song’s practice session ahead of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, but Kouyoumdjian had a far simpler way of explaining her performance profile.

“In essence, the performance upwind will range between 12 and 13 knots when the boat is fully powered and when we’re sailing downwind VMG we will always go approximately two knots quicker than the speed of the wind,” he said.

80ft yacht cost

Even the carbon heads manages to be stylish in a minimalist sort of way. Photo: Stefano Gattini

Which, looking back at my notes is pretty much how she played out in a breeze that to my relief, built beyond the forecast throughout the day. So much so, that by the time we saw 14 knots of true wind we were indeed sliding downhill at 16-17 knots. In the relatively flat water off Porto Cervo the ride felt effortless.

But like so many modern performance machines, achieving the predicted speeds is more about knowing the numbers you’re looking for rather than getting there by feel alone.

With the breeze up it was also clear that, like other modern lightweight yachts, the performance is more about understanding apparent wind sailing where bearing away doesn’t always mean easing sheets. At one point we were sailing at 12 knots with everything still sheeted in as if we were going upwind with the apparent wind angle showing 35°. Except we were actually sailing at 70° true. If you’re not keeping an eye on the numbers boats like this can mess with your mind.

What was easier to get to grips with, and fun to experience, was the rapid acceleration from 10 to 16 knots as we rounded the weather mark. We hadn’t even hoisted the kite at that stage, but the slingshot ride as we bore away felt more like a mark rounding aboard a multihull.

The ClubSwan 80 is clearly a slippery boat but as the crew got to grips with settings, numbers and routines there was still one big question that wouldn’t be answered until My Song got onto the race course for real. How would this 80-footer stack up against the competition in handicap racing?

80ft yacht cost

The CS80 is beautifully built, looks superb and performs well. Photo: Richard Langdon

Because even though it has been designed for one-design racing, the reality is that the CS80’s future success will be built on whether it can square up to other boats in handicap competition. Designs of all sizes have struggled or even fallen at this hurdle and with a brand new complex boat still to be shaken down in front of a competitive fleet at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup there was plenty of pressure for Swan.

“Given where we are with setting this boat up, my own personal expectation is that we’ll be lucky if we finish all the races this week,” said North Sails president Ken Read who was acting as onboard team coach. “That’s no reflection on the builders or the boat, it’s just the nature of the game, it’s a complex boat and it will take time.”

Less than 24 hours later, the crew of My Song had their first hint of what was possible, hitting the podium with a 3rd place in their maiden race. By the end of the week they had delivered a win with no dropped races to leave them 6th overall in the 13 boat fleet, a big result for a new launch.

Potential of the ClubSwan 80

So, can the ClubSwan 80 break the mould and become an 80ft one-design class for owner drivers? In my opinion it’s a big ask, but not because there’s anything lacking in the boat itself.

The CS80 is beautifully built, looks superb and performs well. And if you’re looking for a maxi sailing version of a sports car that can go touring as well, perhaps this is it.

From a cost point of view the price, when it is announced, is likely to be steep – but will be significantly less expensive than a one-off 80-footer and expected to be cheaper to run if the one-design format is adhered to.

From a one-design perspective it is difficult to see how Swan can build future ClubSwan 80s fast enough to create a fleet while the appetite among potential owners is there. But then again, plenty questioned whether the ClubSwan 50 could work. There’s a reason why Nautor Swan thinks big – it’s because it can and it knows it has frequently delivered.

Crew is one of the largest expenses on a superyacht and critical to the owner’s enjoyment of their vessel. As the largest crew agency in the world, we know crew. Our cost calculator contains customized crew lists for yachts ranging from 80ft to 600ft with salary information based on our reference verified salary data.

Our users also have the ability to completely tailor the crew list to the specific needs, schedule and requirements of their vessel. Each yacht is unique and may have specific owner requests in addition to the yacht’s safe manning requirements.

Management of the supplemental crew costs and strategic budgeting can help avoid significant overspend on categories such as food and uniform. This tool contains default values based on our industry expertise and recommended budget for an efficiently and safely run superyacht.

To learn more about each crew position in detail, including salary ranges, please visit our yacht department directory .

Drag the sliders to modify your results. These are not linear scales and we expect most yachts to operate within the 20-80% window. Above 80% and below 20% costs increase or decrease at exaggerated levels and we only see numbers in these levels in very rare circumstances.

This sunburst diagram is interactive. You can click into each block to see the expense break down and mouse over each block for more details.

Our chart of accounts displays seven major categories, 20 sub-categories plus a further 80 detail categories for a total of 107.

Our yacht operating cost calculator is now on it’s third major revision. We start with actual yacht expense data from our yacht management accountants and then generate formulas to extrapolate out the budget for a wide range of yachts. We have been providing accounting services to large yachts for the past 18 years.

Our operating cost calculator is tuned for yachts from 80 to 600 feet. We find operating variables create the largest variances for yachts smaller than 100 feet and larger than 250 feet. We have tested the numbers the most in the range from 100 to 250 feet.

Our budget calculator factors in the fuel burn for a range of engine sizes typically seen installed on yachts by length. By dragging the green “fuel dockage” slider to the right you will increase the projected fuel burn rate and therefore the budget cost for fuel. Our default position would be for a typical displacement fuel burn. Position the slider in the 60-80% range for fuel projections for planning hulls.

Our default values produce a budget number that we believe is generous to run a yacht to a high standard. Perfect is a very expensive word to use in the yachting industry where standards are already high. Moving the crew and maintenance sliders to 80% will provide an “industry best” quality of crew and give them the maintenance budget to operate to a very high standard. If you need to go over the 80% area then you may have unusually labor intensive equipment on the yacht.

Yes, our yacht operating cost calculator can output a budget suitable for this situation. Adjust the owner use to 2 (minimum value), owner slider to 0, crew slider to 10%, Administration to 10%, Fuel and Dockage to 0, Maintenance to 10% and then Capital Repairs to 0. This will remove all of the large charges associated with owner use and vessel movement but leave the essential base maintenance and insurance in place.

Lift on and float in yacht transport is a popular way to transport yachts across large ocean passage. The yachts that this service certainly applies to are ones that may not have the motoring range or structural integrity for blue ocean cruising. The cost of transporting a yacht twice per year is put into our budget once the “Fuel Dockage” slider hits 75%. If your yacht has the range we recommend self-sufficient ocean passages whenever possible. Whilst the transport companies sell their services based upon reportedly well oiled operated schedules the reality is that your yacht may stay waiting for pickup for a week or more with no compensation due. When factoring in all secondary factors of self-sufficient passages (increased fuel, maintenance, potential storm damage, crew time off, extra delivery crew) compared with transporting your yacht (insurance, potential loading / unloading damage, loss of schedule control, no work whilst underway, crew flights, crew accommodation) we believe that there is a 100% premium associated with float in transport and a 75% premium with lift on transport compared with self-powered.

Abandoned yachts crash in value. We recommend that even if you are trying to sell your yacht that you use the yacht for a minimum of two weeks per year so that systems are tested and working every six months. There is nothing worse for a yacht than not being used. If you truly are not going to use the yacht then you should sell it immediately for the first genuine offer as every dollar you put into maintenance will not be recovered at the time of the sale.

We did not build this version with sailing yachts in mind. Early in our development of this version we decided to exclude sailing yachts as a few of the major cost drivers scale very differently for sailing yachts compared with motor yachts. For example: To calculate paint costs we reviewed the surface area of over 100 large yachts and created a formula for painted surface area to length. Sailing yachts just don’t scale in a consistent way. Similarly crew numbers don’t scale in the same manner that they do for motor yachts. If there is sufficient demand we may build a sailing selector switch into a future version of this tool.

We hate to hear when yacht owners were told by their broker to factor in 10% of the purchase price to operate the yacht. This over used saying is sadly right occasionally (particularly for newer yachts in the $20-30M range)… but just because a broken watch tells the right time twice a day you shouldn’t rely upon it to tell the time. As yachts get older their capital value decreases but their maintenance costs increase. There is no way that a fixed 10% of purchase cost rule can be true… if your broker told you this rule then you need a new yacht broker… we know some good ones. 😊

Blog | Yachts to Consider Between 70 to 80 ft.

Arm yourself with actionable sales intelligence in the motoryacht arena.

INTRODUCTION

The 70-80 foot market continues to be a strong market with several recent sales. Here’s a breakdown of a few of the top yachts to consider between 70 and 80 feet in length that are attracting buyers to the table.

Ocean Alexander Galley

Ocean Alexander 78 Yacht

The 2012 Ocean Alexander 78 ALEXANDRA represents one of the finest motor yachts in her class with less than 400 original hours, Zero Speed Trac stabilizers finished off with a stunning Destry Darr Interior. Powered by twin Caterpillar C18 ACERT engines (Approx. 397 hrs), she carries a three-stateroom layout plus crew quarters, making for an ideal cruising yacht, whether for an owner operator or crewed yacht. The previous owners transitioned from a a 62’ Ocean Alexander, falling in love with the spacious layout in the bigger 78′ model that could accommodate cruising requirements in Southern waters like Florida and on Lake Michigan in Chicago. This motoryacht offers more substance and more room, guaranteeing guest comfort in all cruising locations. _________________________________________________________________________________ More research: Review Similar Yachts | Review Ocean Alexander Reviews & Articles

2008 75′ Azimut Yacht

The 74-78 range is a strong market with continued demand and the Azimut 75 is a boat worth considering whether you’re moving up into a larger yacht or just getting started in the boating world. Although a different breed than the Ocean Alexander showing modern lines and euro interior she’s a sporty yacht that’s perfect for cruising up the coast or a trip to the Bahamas. This particular Azimut 75 is a great example of a well maintained boat cared for by professionals. A crew of two have been aboard full time since first delivery and it shows. Dark stained wood and cream leather highlight the modern and spacious interior. She’s an example of a yacht that is just as stylish in Monaco as it is in Miami. The best priced Azimut 75 on the market priced for a quick sale. ________________________________________________________________________ More research: Review Similar Yachts | Review Azimut Yachts Reviews & Articles

Lazzara 75 LSX Sport Yacht

One of five 75 Lazzaras currently on the market, this 2007 model is the nicest available. New paint in 2010 and fresh varnish on her aft cap rails really set her apart from her competition. The galley down arrangement is very unique in that it gets natural light from the windshield. Her quad Volvo IPS 600s power this Lazzara 75 to 27 knot cruise speed. Tip: We recently listed a 116′ Lazzara for sale that will appeal to buyers who wish to move up to higher length ranges in the future. In 2014, the owners spent over $250,000 to keep her in ‘mint’ condition. _________________________________________________________________________________ More research: Review Similar Yachts | Lazarra Reviews & Articles

How Much Does An 80 Foot Viking Cost?

viking 80 cost

Would the world's best professional basketball player of all time, one that relishes in competition, steer you wrong when it came to what sportfishing yacht you should buy? Michael Jordan has made headlines, since retiring from the NBA, in the world of competitive offshore fishing after purchasing the jaw-dropping Viking Yachts 80 . Because of his celebrity status he makes headlines every time he competes including when he landed a 442-pound Marlin in 2020 and then a winning 24-pound Mahi at the Big Rock Blue Marlin tournament.

The Viking 80, like Jordan, is at the pinnacle of achievement, superior in many ways to its peers. This sportfish superiority does not come with a hefty price tag though, as no corner was cut in construction or equipment choices. Viking Yachts is widely known for being 'simply the best'.

The base price of an 80-foot Viking is over $8 million with the CAT C-32A 1,925MHP base engine package. Upgrading to the larger MTU M96L 2,635mhp engines can add nearly $900,000 to the total cost of the yacht. Including additional options like Seakeeper gyros, Eskimo ice machines, water maker, and other equipment can bring the price even higher. "Even a used Viking 80 will list for between $7-$8 million," said Rich Lucas , Viking Brand Manager for SI Yachts.

Check out this Viking 80 Enclosed Bridge filmed by BoatTube at the Miami Boat Show:

Why is the Viking 80 so expensive? "A Viking sportfish is similar to a Rolls-Royce in terms of setting the standard for quality," continued Rich. "When you purchase a Viking, you know you are getting the most technologically advanced sportfish that's been constructed with the very best materials. There is no cost cutting and Viking has made a tremendous investment to have the top equipment available. That quality is reflected in the price of the boat."

The hull of the Viking 80 is created using a Baltek end-grain balsa wood that is resin-infused, Airex foam core with e-glass Carbon fiber hybrid laminates. The composite bulkheads are also all resin-infused. Even the fuel tanks are infused fiberglass with balsa coring on the sides that is then sealed to the hull with resin foam. The result of this process is a lighter boat (the displacement at standard fuel load is 150,188lbs.) that is structurally stronger, stiffer, and faster.

(Below: The Viking 80 is fast for its size and is able to reach speeds of over 40 knots.)

viking 80 is fast

While its 216-square foot cockpit makes this an exciting sportfishing boat to compete in, the Viking 80 can also be enjoyed as a luxury cruising yacht. There are 5 cabins on this vessel, each beautifully appointed with high-gloss walnut joinery. The master suite is akin to your finest room at a 5-star resort and stretches the full 21' 4" beam of the yacht. Even the king-size bed lifts up using gas pistons, revealing a large area underneath for storage. Two of the 5 guest bedrooms feature queen-sized beds, while the other two cabins have bunks. All of the bedrooms have their own private bathroom.

When you're note rejuvenating in the bedrooms from a long day of cruising or fishing, the salon has all of the comforts of home. Considered the 'Great Room' of the yacht, the salon is bathed in high-gloss walnut cabinetry and furniture. There is a 65" HDTV that can be easily raised or lowered inside of its cabinet with the push of a button. From the leather furniture, to the incredible sound system, you may never want to leave the inside of your Viking.

salon on 80 foot viking

As a new owner begins to add on options and equipment when building a Viking 80, there are inevitably going to be additional costs that can move the final price tag even higher. There are also some unique features that can be added to the boat when built that you may never even think, of such as a hidden electric safe under the master berth. Here are a list of just some of the options that can be added to the Viking 80 that will affect the price:

  • Upgraded interior from walnut to a satin finish
  • Air conditioning in the cockpit
  • Seakeeper 35 Gyro Stabilization
  • Custom hull color gelcoat
  • Changing your 80 Convertible to an Enclosed Bridge
  • 1,400 GPD water maker
  • Eskimo ice machine
  • ElectroSea centralized seawater system

And because Viking does semi-custom builds, they invite you to challenge them with any requests for specific needs you may have while designing your own Viking 80. You may be surprised as to what can be done

We have been helping our customers buy or sell their boat since 1964 and have countless repeat clients that come back to us for our high-level of customer service. How much do yachts cost? Let’s look at yacht prices per size.

SELECT SIZE ⇩

Note: We will look at yachts that are a few years old. Very few people buy brand-new yachts as the price comes down a lot after only a few years.

How much is a small yacht? Let’s start at 40 feet length.

40 Foot Yacht Cost

A 40-foot yacht can be found used for around $200,000 and new models can cost as much as a million dollars. There are always lots of used yachts for sale around 40 feet in length, which makes them more attractive to first-time buyers.

Technically, a yacht begins at 23 feet. However, yachts that size will more often be referred to as boats.

A 40-foot yacht is a great option for looking for relative simplicity and plenty of comfort and capability. This size is great for day trips in the Caribbean dedicated to speed boating or simple cruising.

The size remains manageable, but the vessel can be updated with extra living spaces and amenities as desired, with a more affordable price than larger options.

The maintenance prices will remain lower as well.

Make sure you are considering the age of your yacht. Even if it is on the smaller end, it will be more expensive if it is new and custom-built to your wants.

Even if you think a 40-foot yacht is the cheapest option, these small factors make for a sliding price scale.

You might find that a smaller, new, custom yacht is more expensive than an older, simpler, larger yacht. One benefit of an older yacht is that it should have the improvements and equipment that make it comfortable to operate and will not have those additional costs.

For  sailboat prices specifically, check out this article .

Our Pick: Viking 42 Convertible: Cruise and Fish (2014)

Price: $895,000

80ft yacht cost

  • Cushioned seats
  • Underwater lights
  • Flybridge fiberglass hard-top
  • Recent engine and service
  • Joystick control
  • Cockpit shade with poles, freezer, and step-up box
  • Custom chairs
  • Coach roof overhang to provide shade
  • home theater setup
  • Freshwater wash area
  • Cockpit freezer and drink box
  • Forward-facing viewing windows in deckhouse

Here’s a great example of a yacht with differing ages and year models. It has twin diesel engines, 600 hp each, and cruise at 35 mph (pretty fast!).

Yacht Price Examples for Three Other 40-50 Foot

  • 42-foot Grand Banks 42 Classic; trawler-cruiser style yacht; twin diesel, 350 hp each, cruising speed is 13 mph. Price: $370,000 for 2004; $124,500 for 1986; older ones for less
  • 45-foot Sea Ray 450 Sundancer or Sedan Bridge; single or twin diesel, about 1,000 hp total; cruising speed about 26 mph Price: $472,000 for 2012 twin-engine
  • 41-foot Back Cove Downeast; single diesel 715 hp; cruising speed is 26 mph Price: $619,000 for 2016

50 Foot Yacht Cost

50-foot yachts are  normally owner-operated, so you wouldn’t need to pay for a crew. Now we are around the size of 2-bedroom yachts.

They can provide more living space giving the owner flexibility for more guests and making it a more permanent residential option. With more space comes the opportunity to install more amenities as well.

The biggest difference between the 40-foot vessel and the 50-foot is the accommodations.

Expect three-cabin layouts, which give plenty of space for rest. The opportunity to create guest rooms, owners’ suite, and entertainment spaces are better with these yachts.

Our Pick: Hatteras GT54 Convertible Sportfish

80ft yacht cost

How much is a large yacht? Let’s  step up to 60 foot.

60 Foot Yacht Cost

Now we’re looking at 2-bedroom yacht prices. A yacht in this range approaches the upper end of the owner/operator criteria.

This means that owners need to decide whether they can handle this size yacht on their own or if they need to hire outside help from a crew.

If you’re thinking of buying a boat this size, the cost may not be an issue, but understand that adding crew members adds substantial extra expenses! Crew salaries start at around $3K /mth for junior members and $10K for captains and experienced crew members.

This size is great for longer travels beyond day trips and adds more and more space for extra amenities. Hosting guests becomes easier.

Here are some examples:

Our Pick: Hatteras M60

80ft yacht cost

The average base price for this model is around $2,995,000.

The Hatteras M60 is great for someone who wants the luxury of a larger yacht but still wants to be an owner-operator. The deck’s layout below and above is spacious, with a large salon and a full master suite. It can be customized to order with hardwood floors or specific carpeting and amenities like TVs, a bar, a full kitchen, etc. It is a motor yacht, meant for pleasure cruising.

It has twin diesel engines, 1135 hp each; cruising speed is 28 mph.

Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 60 Foot

  • 64-foot Schaefer 640; express cruiser; twin diesel engines, 625 hp each; cruising speed 25 mph Price: $1,299,000 for 2017
  • 60-foot Sunreef 62 Sailing Catamaran; twin diesel engines 110 hp each; cruising speed 10 mph Price: $990,000 for 2009

70 Foot Yacht Cost

We’re now looking at 3-bedroom yachts. Once you reach this size yacht, it is almost guaranteed you will need a crew to help operate it. A crewed yacht is very different from an owner-operated yacht.

This is just shy of the superyacht category, so if you settle on this size, know you are almost there!

As previously mentioned, as the yacht size gets larger, so do the number of factors that make the purchase more layered and complex.

When yachts reach this size, the interior layout begins to change more drastically. They often have a spacious main deck perfect for dining and entertaining guests, whereas below, the yacht would likely have four or more cabins and crew quarters.

With more rooms comes more cost and more opportunity to customize the space to make it your own.

Here are some great options for this size:

Our Pick: Hatteras GT70 Convertible Sportfish

80ft yacht cost

The 2017 GT70 model runs around $4,500,000, but keep in mind the extra costs of maintenance, furnishing, and a cabin crew to help it run. It’s great for a long vacation and far-away destinations.

The GT70 convertible sportfish is known for its speed and agility, and high propulsion power. It has twin diesel engines, 1900 hp each; cruising speed over 30 mph.

It is 70′ 6″ with 2,140-gallon fuel capacity. The inside is lavish, with a galley, a huge salon, and five staterooms.

Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 70 Foot

  • 75-foot Hatteras Motor Yacht; sport cruiser; twin diesel, 1800 hp each; cruising speed 28 mph. Price: $4,375,000 for 2017
  • 74-foot Ocean Alexander Motoryacht; twin diesel, 1150 hp each; cruising speed 24 mph. Price: $1,895,000 for 2011

100 Foot Yacht Costs (and up):

You are officially in the superyacht range.

These yachts come in all styles and shapes, allowing for cruising along coastlines or focusing on watercraft and speed boating.

Since this is likely the peak size boat for practical use, you can expect a lot of additional costs for hiring a crew, maintenance, docking, as well as stocking your boat full of amenities.

You’re likely to spend the bulk of your costs furnishing this size boat as bigger yachts typically are sold without furniture. The previous owner will want to hold on to designer furniture and other expensive interior.

Check out these great  examples of 100-foot yachts .

Our Pick: 143′ 04″ Virtus 44

80ft yacht cost

This model cost around $20,189,000.

This mega yacht is anyone’s dream.

It is home to a fully integrated beach club with room for a pool deck, floor-to-ceiling windows in the main salon, a hot tub on the top deck, five staterooms, an 8-person crew, and room to sleep ten guests.

It has room for water toys and other gadgets, with a layout that keeps them purposefully hidden from the outside world. It has a 12-knot cruising speed and 16-knot max speed,

Other 100+ Feet Yachts Price Examples

  • 98′ 5″ AB 100 Price: $8,843,260 for 2018
  • 161′ 04″ Acico Nassima Price: $17,933,000 for 2012

How Much is Yacht Insurance?

Insurance on a yacht is around 1% of the purchase price per year. It can go higher if you have lots of expensive designer furniture. This can add up over the years. It’s often cheaper to insure a sailing yacht but the price range is still within the 0.7-1.3%.

What Other Expenses Do Yacht Owners Face?

Harbor fees is another expense for yacht owners. It’s also a yearly fee that varies but as a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay around $100 per foot per year, depending on how popular the marina is. You will also have to be on a waitlist if you want a good location.

How Much Does a Luxury Yacht Cost?

A super yacht fall under the category of “luxury yachts” or “mega-yachts”.

The world’s largest private vessel belongs to the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s Azzam. It is 590 feet long and costs $600 million to build!

It is outliers like these that increase the price average for yacht owners, perhaps scaring potential owners when they start their research.

As a luxury yacht price guide, however, we need to look at averages.

Currently, the average superyacht costs $275 million. This does not even account for maintenance costs, either.

Superyachts are large and luxurious, needing a professional crew to help them run. They are designed to emphasize comfort, speed, and longer expeditions – depending on the yacht builders.

They might have:

  • swimming pools,
  • water toys,
  • diving and fishing poles,
  • fully furnished rooms,
  • helicopter landing pads,
  • and smaller support vessels

Just to name a few amenities. They are truly the epitome of the elite.

What Size Boat is Considered a Yacht?

The normal yacht length starts at around 23 feet, and can extend hundreds of feet.  If the boat meets 23 feet, it can be considered a yacht.

A boat does not need luxury features to be considered a yacht.

It can be minimal and stripped of the “extra” stuff to fall into the yacht category, so long as it meets the size and length criteria.

11 Things to Consider Before You Purchase

When making this purchase, the yacht size you buy needs to reflect what you hope to get out of the vessel.

Some important questions to ask yourself before you buy are:

  • What does your perfect day on the water look like?
  • How long will your average day on the water be?
  • Will it be more boating/watercraft focused or long cruise focused?
  • Will you use the yacht for fishing?
  • Will you be on the yacht every day of the week or just on weekends?
  • How many people do you hope to fit on the yacht?
  • Do you plan to stay on the yacht overnight?
  • Where will you dock the yacht?
  • How much boating experience do you have?
  • How fast do you want the yacht to go?
  • How important is it to have extra amenities like furnished rooms, water toys, electronics, etc.?

These questions will guide you to understand the size you really need and will be able to realistically maintain versus what your most ideal yacht would look like.

When Do You Need a Full-Time Crew?

At length over 50 or 60 feet, you may need a full-time captain or crew.

A full-time crew person will be needed to keep all the varnished woodwork looking good and all the little things maintained.

Sometimes, you must be honest with yourself about what you want and what you actually need. Be self-aware about your abilities (or lack thereof) in taking care of a specific size yacht.

If you don’t know much about boats and navigation, you will need more help to use your vessel.

Hopefully, this comprehensive guide gives you a good starting point as you begin your yacht price research process.

Important Things to Consider As Well

Although there are many factors to consider when understanding a yacht’s prices, it is an exciting purchase nonetheless and should be enjoyed as much as possible.

At the end of your research, you’ll be the owner of a beautiful yacht you can use for leisure, cruising, sports craft, fishing, or all of the above.

Although this article is a good starting point, we would also recommend getting in touch with a  yacht broker who can help you find your best fit , model, year, and the price is given your personal budget.

They are great sources of knowledge in addition to personal research.

Make sure you are as patient as possible in this process to make sure you are covering all your bases, but most importantly, enjoy the process!

Here’s How Much Yachts Cost on Average:

Yachts start around $300,000 for smaller 40-foot models and can go as high as several hundred million dollars for superyachts.

These are the main contributing factors to the price of a yacht:

  • The size of the yacht
  • The age of the yacht
  • The brand and  type of yacht

In general, the larger the yacht is, the more important the quality of the build becomes.

Also, potential owners need to understand the cruising speed and propulsion of different yachts.

The yacht type is also broken down into two categories:

  • Mediterranean Style Open style expresses yacht with maximum space for sun, little-to-no shade on the deck.
  • Hard-top express Semi-enclosed or fully-enclosed space on deck for the operator
  • Flybridge yachts

An express yacht is often referred to interchangeably as an  express cruiser  or  sports cruiser .

It has a single deck above the hull with a living space below.

They are much sleeker, too.

A flybridge yacht is often referred to as a sedan bridge or sport bridge, and it is typically used for fishing. It has additional space above the main deck.

Since the flybridge area has more space on the second deck, the main deck is normally made up of enclosed spaces and rooms.

It can have an open-air layout but can also have a hard-top.

TRIPLE POD PROPULSION COMBINED WITH CARBON FIBER

The adoption of triple Pod propulsion, combined with the optimization of the water lines and the extensive use of carbon fiber, reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20 to 30%* in the main speed range.

*compared to vessels of the same weight and size with a traditional hard-chine hull and shaft line propulsion.

Carbon tech_0013_S8

Azimut’s pioneering use of carbon fiber lamination goes beyond pure performance. The Carbon Tech Generation offers expanded volumes onboard, while maintaining excellent dynamic stability and perfect handling. Preserving the yacht’s low center of gravity, the carbon fiber was focused on the upper parts of the yacht, lightening the laminated components by up to 30% and reducing the natural roll momentum up to 15%.

Azimut_TF_Active-trim-control

Automated interceptors optimize the trim at every speed to maintain ideal hydrodynamics for performance and efficiency, at the same time negating any lateral imbalance due to sidewinds or weight distribution. With the pilot’s peace of mind assured, the driving experience is simpler and more enjoyable.

Azimut_TF_Garmin-Control-and-Monitoring-System

The integrated control system by Garmin has been customised to increase control potential: from engine data and alarms, to bilge and water discharge pumps, tank levels and engine room ventilation, right through to the sound system and the air conditioning units. The system can be accessed from both helm stations and remotely from a tablet.

Azimut_TF_Advanced-Joystick-Controls

The Joystick acts as an analog for the yacht, offering intuitive, one-handed control in every situation. When the yacht is stopped, moving the Joystick forward or back, side to side, and twisting clockwise or counter-clockwise activates the engines to mimic that motion. It’s the easiest way to pull off precise maneuvers.

When Joystick Driving is activated, the autopilot is immediately engaged. For easy course correction, the driver may briefly twist the Joystick for 1 degree in that direction or twist and hold for 10 degrees. The Autopilot keeps a forward course after the Joystick is released.
