The Founding Principles of Dream Boat Co:

1. That NOW is the time to do the things you want to do in life.

2. If yachting in some of the most beautiful areas on earth is one of those things you want, it needs to be in the RIGHT yacht for you.

Perhaps you know what kind of yacht is right for you, in which case we can help you locate one for sale.

If you're unsure what kind of yacht would be best, we can listen to your preferences and plans to help you find the right one.

Furthermore, if we aren't already selling the kind of yacht you want, we can help you find one.

Yacht Brokerage

Why list your boat with The Dream Boat Company? There is something to love about every yacht on the water. Maybe it's the yacht 's history. Maybe it's the feeling of prestige and serene comfort cruising a $2M yacht that can't be felt any other way. Alternately, it could be the feeling you get when you hear the water whisk by, feeling the spray in the air, and carving corners in a 1969 Larson All American with a screaming outboard is its own kind of romance. The trick to selling a yacht is identifying what it is about a specific yacht that makes it so special. We identify these traits, then make it the pillar of the marketing effort. There may be 10 of that model yacht on the market. Why is THIS one the right one for the buyer? THAT is what sells it. Our extensive marine experience gives us a competitive advantage. Let us chat with you before you decide who can best represent your selling endeavor, you'll be glad you did. We are not in the business of listing yachts, we are in the business of selling yachts; our track record shows that. Our location in Blaine, WA is close to three major marine hubs including Seattle, Bellingham, and Vancouver, where many people are looking to buy boats for sale.

Other Yachting Services

We are more than a yacht brokerage-Randall Parten founded The Dream Boat Company with a lifetime of boating behind him, starting in childhood when his uncle would take him out on boating adventures. He is a veteran of the United States Navy, serving on the aircraft carrier USS George Washington and is currently a U.S. Coast Guard Licensed 100-ton Master Operator (a step above standard Captain's License).

Just as important as education and experience, Randy has a genuine passion for EVERYTHING MARINE that is all there to be shared.  This passion and knowledge is part of the reason that Dream Boat Co. offers many services beyond brokering yachts.

Owning a boat is no small task, and we offer many marine services to minimize the stress to you. If you need a boat transported, towed, hauled, maintained, cleaned or repaired we can help. Randall is also available for hire as a captain or hand on your vessel, or to give boat operating lessons if you want to improve your own skillset. If you need anything marine-related, we will likely be able to assist.

How to Charter a Boat

If you want to sail off into the sunset, at least temporarily, you need to understand how to get aboard first.

An illustration of the bow of a boat with three women with flowing hair and cocktails looking over a man playing a guitar and then off in the water, four other vacationers are sunbathing on inner tubes.

By Lauren Sloss

This time of year, it’s an inevitable thought: Life would be that much better out on the water. Specifically, on a boat.

Even if you have neither a boat nor boating experience, it’s never been easier to make your nautical dreams come true — whether you want a day trip on your local lake or a fully staffed multiday voyage in a far-flung locale. Here are the initial questions that will help you plan an adventure on the water.

Whom are you traveling with?

Thinking about the size and dynamic of your group is an important first step, even if you are simply going on a day trip. Will children be on board? How old? What about elderly parents?

Dan Lockyer, the chief commercial officer of Dream Yacht Worldwide , strongly encourages travelers to determine group size — and, ideally, get people committed — before booking.

“The location that you want to go to, the time of year that you want to go, the type of boat that you want will entirely depend on the makeup of the group that you’re sailing with,” Mr. Lockyer said.

Do you want to captain, or do you want a captain?

Different charter companies specialize in certain locations, types of boats, itineraries and services. Some companies offer the opportunity for a “bareboat” charter, in which you rent the boat and take on the navigation and provisioning yourself, while others exclusively offer fully staffed options, including a captain and a cook.

If you want to captain the boat yourself, almost all outfits require some kind of proof of sailing or boating experience, often in line with local regulations.

Edward King, 45, an executive at a streaming company based in San Francisco, is experienced in sailing the city’s waterways. But on vacation, he said he would prefer to let a captain and crew take the lead.

Mr. King said he appreciates a captain who is familiar with both the local waters — “they’ll know how to avoid sailing into a certain sandbar,” he said, — as well as the local attractions.

In contrast, Matt Blake, 38, a software engineer based in Oakland, Calif., was eager to grow his sailing experience during a recent trip to La Paz, Mexico, with his fiancée. He hired a captain but made clear that the captain was there to help and teach.

Where do you want to go?

“Do you want something that’s more culturally oriented? Nature oriented? An adventure trip?” asked Mary Curry, the voyage product director of Adventure Life , which offers small group tours and private trips on land and on water around the world.

That answer can determine your destination. Popular cruising grounds include the Caribbean, Croatia, Alaska and French Polynesia, but the sky — or the sea — is really the limit. For help narrowing your focus, travel advisers often have relationships with charter companies or outfits around the world, and sailing publications offer recommendations.

Kyla Malkani, who has had experience with charters working as a destination wedding planner, recommends consulting the concierge of waterfront hotels, particularly for short-term or day rentals.

“A lot of times they will have either their own fleet or they will have some sort of connection at a dock,” said Ms. Malkani, 37, who is based in Washington, D.C., and is currently working as a content creator and freelance event planner.

What kind of boat?

Where you want to travel and for how long will likely determine the kinds of boats that are available to you. Crucial at this point, too, is an understanding of the boat’s layout and amenities.

“You definitely want to choose the right kind of boat,” said Ms. Malkani. “If you want more adventure, a sailboat is nice. If you’re looking for a luxury party environment, a yacht is best. And if you’re looking for something smooth, for older people or with kids, a catamaran is great.”

David Barclay is a luxury travel adviser who has also chartered boats for his own vacations.

“You want to match what the travelers want to what the boat offers,” he said.

Perhaps a group of friends might not mind a catamaran with functional but not luxurious marine bathrooms, but a multigenerational group might prefer more high-touch amenities.

When should I book?

Often, charter trips are once-in-a-lifetime experiences that require a great deal of advanced planning.

“You may have a specific place you want to go, or a specific time of year you want to travel,” said Mr. Barclay. “And some places just aren’t good at certain times of year.”

Naturally, you don’t want to be at sea in the Caribbean during hurricane season, or in the Mediterranean during winter storms. But you also might want to avoid peak cruising seasons, too.

The first three weeks of August are quite popular, said Mr. Lockyer. “If you have some flexibility and can travel in early July, you’ll get the same sort of great weather, a greater selection of boats and the anchorages won’t be as crowded.”

How much does it cost?

Charter costs are incredibly variable, dependent on all of the factors coming into play: your boat type and size, your destination, your group size, the amount of crew you’d like and the amenities on board. That said, costs could range anywhere from $2,000 for a day on a sailboat to hundreds of thousands of dollars for a multiday mega-yacht charter. Have a budget in mind when beginning your research process.

What if I didn’t plan far in advance?

While advanced planning is encouraged, and often necessary for bigger boat trips, it’s possible to book a boat last-minute.

Boatsetter , an Airbnb-like platform for boats, is a good resource for last-minute bookings, especially for day trips, and even has an Instant Book option for down-to-the-wire bookings.

“If it’s for a special event, or around major holidays, you may want to book a month or two in advance. But for general bookings, you can find options within a week or two,” said Kim Koditek, Boatsetter’s head of brand strategy and communications, of the company’s overnight offerings, which appear on their platform under the luxury yacht charters category .

Ms. Malkani has used Boatsetter for some of her charters, most of which have been booked with a specific goal in mind.

“I’m a sunset chaser,” she said. “My husband and I just really love being on the water, and we always try to squeeze in some sort of boat day activity when we’re traveling.”

Bodies of two children recovered after sailboat capsizes, search continues for missing man

by Emily Matesic, FOX 11 News

{ }Missing man and kids in Door Co. Last seen Saturday, July 13, 2024 (Brown Co. Emergency Management)

UPDATE: The children's names have been released .

FISH CREEK (WLUK) -- The bodies of two young children were found after their sailboat was found capsized in the waters of Door County.

"My heart is in my stomach. As a boater, we've been boating 50 years and to see a boat pull in and not know where the captain or two small children are, that's a boater's worst nightmare," said Kathy Hinkfuss of Green Bay, a recreational boater.

A search began over the weekend for the two children, ages 3 and 5, and their father, 32-year-old Bill Salnik of Little Suamico, after they went sailing Saturday.

Officials say the three left Oconto Harbor after 10 a.m.

Around noon Sunday, the Oconto County Sheriff's Office received a report of an overdue boat and began a search with the U.S. Coast Guard and the Wisconsin DNR.

"The Oconto County Sheriff's Office began a search along with the USCG and the WI DNR. The search expanded last night into the jurisdictional waters of Door County. Emergency personnel from the DCSO, DC emergency services and local fire departments joined the search," said Chief Deputy Patrick McCarty with the Door County Sheriff's Office.

The family's intended route was to go from Green Island in the bay to a marina just south of Oconto but they never made it to their destination.

Salnik's truck and trailer was still at the boat ramp and his phone calls went straight to voicemail.

At 6:22 a.m. Monday, the capsized sailboat was found just south of Chambers Island, without Salnik and his children. The vessel was was towed to Fish Creek.

After 11 a.m. Monday, searchers found the bodies of the two young children about a mile south of where the sailboat was found. "The bodies of two young children were recovered in the water about one mile south of where the boat was located. Their names are not being released at this time pending positive identification and notification of next of kin," added McCarty.

The Door County Sheriff's Office says they will continue their land and sea search efforts to find Salnik.

Due to warmer water and air temperatures, officials say it is still possible to find Salnik alive.

Officials are asking those out on the water to keep an eye out for anything that may be related to the search for Salnik.

Their two bodies were found in a three-metre life raft after it washed ashore on Sable Island - 180 miles off the coast of Nova Scotia - last week.

It remains unclear how the couple got into trouble, but police in Halifax have launched an investigation into their deaths.

It is understood Brett was carrying a Garmin GPS device which pinged a final signal around 40 miles south-west of Sable Island on June 13.

Bodies of Children, 3 and 5 Years Old, Recovered, Dad Still Missing After Sailboat Capsizes in Wisconsin

The children's bodies were found more than 48 hours after their boat set sail

The bodies of a 5-year-old daughter and a 3-year-old son were recovered on Monday, July 15, following a search and rescue mission for a missing sailboat near Chambers Island, Wis., according to the Door County Sheriff’s Office . The search for their father continues.

Bill Salnick, 32, and his children, 5 and 3, went missing around 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 13. Although police withheld the names of the children in their initial statement, they were identified as Charlotte and Josh by a GoFundMe created by Salnick's mother, Tina.

The 18-foot Gulf Coast sailboat, My Lady Blue, they were sailing in was found around 6:20 a.m., just south of Chambers Island in Gibraltar, Wis., the sheriff's office said. The children's bodies were discovered at around 11:20 a.m., "one mile south of where the boat had been found."

Oconto County Sheriff's Offic

The family left the Oconto boat launch on My Lady Blue around 10 a.m. Saturday. The search for Salnick and his children began after the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office was notified that an overdue boater had left the Oconto Harbor, per the OCSO’s Facebook statement . Oconto County is west of Door County and across from Green Bay.

The United States Coast Guard (USCG), Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, City of Oconto Police Department, Oconto County Emergency Management, Marinette County Sheriff’s Office and Dispatch Center and Oconto Fire & Rescue assisted with OCSO’s search.

Beginning Sunday, the USCG searched the Bay of Green Bay and expanded into Door County's jurisdictional waters. The Door County Sheriff’s Office, Door County Emergency Services and Town of Gibraltar Fire Department then joined the search.

The search for Salnick will continue on land, water and air on Tuesday morning.

Expert theory on what caused deaths of couple found dead in lifeboat

Brett Clibbery, 70, and his wife Sarah Justine Packwood, 54, were sailing on their 42ft boat, Theros, from Nova Scotia to the Azores on a mission to prove fossil fuels aren't necessary for long journeys

Sarah Packwood, 54, and Brett Clibbery, 70, were heading to the Azores in a wind and solar-powered vessel

  • 08:46, 21 Jul 2024

An expert has shared his thoughts on how a couple found dead in a life boat met their tragic end .

Canadian national Brett Clibbery, 70, and his British Reiki healer wife Sarah Justine Packwood, 54, were sailing from Nova Scotia to the Azores on their 42ft boat, dubbed Theros.

They were reported missing a week after their departure on June 11, and their bodies found almost a month later on July 10. Their life raft had washed up on Sable Island, which is infamously known as the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" due to the wrecks that wash up there.

An official investigation is underway, with several theories being pursued. But as yet there is no concrete answer as to how they died. One of the leading hypotheses is that their boat was crushed by a much larger ship shortly after leaving Halifax in Novia Scotia. Veteran sailors have also suggested that the additional weight from a number of batteries and solar panels made the ship unstable.

Investigators have inspected a large carrier ship that had been in the area at the same time, though the outcome of that probe has not yet been made public.

A source with knowledge of the investigation told Saltwire : "While they do not have conclusive proof, (investigators) suspect the sailboat whose crew washed up dead on Sable Island was struck by a bulk carrier (that was not loaded) likely only a few days after departing Halifax."

Investigators were told by the crew that they were not aware of coming into contact with a sailboat. The hull of the larger vessel did not show signs of any collision.

Hugo Fontaine of the Canadian transportation safety board added: "At this time, we cannot say with complete certainty that the sailing vessel was struck by a ship, as we are still gathering information regarding the overdue sailing vessel Theros."

The source added that the "homemade" nature of the engine replacement may have also caused issues. The couple built the Theros, which was wind and solar-powered, to show that travel can be done without the use of fossil fuels.

In a YouTube video, Brett explained how the boat would be sailing across the Atlantic without any fossil fuels. "We've installed six solar panels to charge the batteries, we have on board a Nissan Leaf battery pack that we use to drive the engine, so we have to get everything put together," he said.

Sarah was a poet, musician and reiki healer, as well as an accomplished sailor, learning at university in England, it is understood. Brett's son, James, posted a tribute on Facebook saying: "The past few days have been very hard.

"My father James Brett Clibbery, and his wife, Sarah Justine Packwood, have regrettably passed away. There is still an investigation, as well as a DNA test to confirm, but with all the news, it is hard to remain hopeful.

"They were amazing people, and there isn’t anything that will fill the hole that has been left by their, so far unexplained passing. Living will not be the same without your wisdom, and your wife was quickly becoming a beacon of knowledge, and kindness. I miss your smiles. I miss your voices. You will be forever missed."

Experts have offered theories about how a thrill-seeking Canadian couple’s attempted transatlantic sailing expedition turned tragic last month, positing their homemade vessel may have been struck by a much larger ship soon after they departed Halifax on the country’s North East coast.

Earlier this month, the bodies of Brett Clibbery, 70, and Sarah Justine Packwood, 54, were found on a life raft washed up on Sable Island, Nova Scotia.

The area is ominously nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” due to the large number of shipwrecks that wind up on its shores.

An official investigation is underway, and although no concrete answers have yet come to light, one leading theory is that their boat was badly damaged by a much larger vessel, forcing the couple to seek refuge in the life raft.

“While they do not have conclusive proof, [investigators] suspect the sailboat … was struck by a bulk carrier likely only a few days after departing Halifax,” a source close to the investigation revealed to Saltwire .

Investigators have reportedly inspected a carrier ship that was in the same area as the couple’s boat — named Theros — at the outset of its voyage, but the results of the probe have not been released to the public.

“The crew of the carrier ship told investigators there were no signs of damage and they were unaware of any collision with a smaller vessel,” the Daily Mirror writes.

The source surmised that the ship’s homemade additions might have presented additional problems, and veteran sailors told the outlet the excessive ballast from batteries and solar panels could have destabilized the boat.

The pair set sail June 11 on a journey that was supposed to take them across the Atlantic Ocean from Halifax to the Azores in their 42-foot yacht, which the couple built themselves.

The eco-friendly boat, which operated without a diesel engine, was due to arrive at its destination by July 2, to serve as a demonstration of how it’s possible to travel the world with electric, wind and solar-powered vessels.

The excursion was to be the couple’s first fully “green” journey on Theros, the building of which the couple chronicled on their YouTube channel, “Theros Adventures.”

Despite the swirling theories about how the doomed voyage turned deadly, the Canadian transportation safety board has not made any formal announcements indicating what happened

“At this time, we cannot say with complete certainty that the sailing vessel was struck by a ship, as we are still gathering information regarding the overdue sailing vessel Theros,” a spokesman said.

Sarah Justine Packwood smiles and looks back towards the camera on a boat.

Clibbery and Packwood married on the yacht in 2016, one year after they met during a chance encounter at a bus stop in London, England.

Packwood was preparing to donate a kidney to her sister when she met Clibbery, who was visiting from Canada — a heartwarming story that was the center of a  2020 “How We Met” piece in The Guardian.

“We have been traveling and co-creating adventures ever since,” Packwood previously posted on YouTube.

Clibbery’s son, Brett, posted a loving tribute to the couple on Facebook, acknowledging the last few days had been really hard for the family, and news to emerge from the investigation has left it “hard to remain hopeful.”

He continued, “They were amazing people, and there isn’t anything that will fill the hole that has been left by their, so far, unexplained passing.

“Living will not be the same without your wisdom, and your wife was quickly becoming a beacon of knowledge, and kindness. I miss your smiles. I miss your voices. You will be forever missed.”

Couple found dead on Atlantic’s ‘Graveyard Island’ while sailing across ocean

A couple who were trying to sail across the Atlantic Ocean have been found dead washed up in a lifeboat on a remote island.

British musician Sarah Packwood, 54, and her husband Brett Clibbery, 70, were attempting to make their way from Nova Scotia, Canada , to the Azores.

They set sail on June 11 on their 42ft wind and solar-powered yacht named Theros but were reported missing a week later after contact had been lost with the boat.

Their bodies were discovered in a three-metre life raft on Sable Island – a stretch of land dubbed the ‘graveyard of the Atlantic’ around 180 miles east of Nova Scotia – last week.

It’s not yet known how the couple got into trouble on their 2,000-mile voyage from North America to the Portuguese islands, which lie around 870 miles west of mainland Europe.

Brett, a Canadian, was carrying a Garmin GPS device which reportedly pinged a final signal on June 13 around 40 miles south-west of Sable Island.

Police in Halifax have launched an investigation into their deaths.

Sable Island, which is a long and thin area of land stretching around 28 miles, gained its nickname as the Atlantic’s graveyard for the sheer number of people found dead there through history.

More than 350 shipwrecks have been recorded since 1583, according to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which says the island is near a major shipping route, lies on a common storm path and is surrounded by ‘tricky’ currents.

It’s home to hundreds of wild horses, manned by just a handful of federal government staff with no permanent residents, and is a protected National Park Reserve.

The pair first met at a bus stop in London in 2015 and got married on their yacht one year later before also holding a Celtic marriage ceremony at Stonehenge.

Sarah, who was from Warwickshire and said to be an ‘accomplished sailor’, later moved to Canada with Brett and they lived on land they bought on Salt Spring Island, near Vancouver.

As they embarked on their journey, the couple shared a video on their Facebook page, Theros Sailing Adventure, and wrote: ‘Captain Brett and First Mate Sarah set sail on the 2nd leg of The Green Odyssey on board Theros – GibSea 42 foot sailboat.

‘Powered by the wind and sun. Heading east to the Azores.’

Brett’s son James Clibbery paid a heartbreaking tribute to his father on July 13.

‘The past few days have been very hard,’ he wrote on Facebook.

‘Living will not be the same without your wisdom, and your wife was quickly becoming a beacon of knowledge, and kindness. I miss your smiles. I miss your voices. You will be forever missed.’

John Dolman, a friend of the couple, told local news outlet Times Colonist that they died doing ‘the thing they loved’.

He said: ‘She called him “captain” and called herself the “carpenter’s apprentice”. They were in love. They passed away doing the thing that they loved. Their adventure continues on the other side.’

Things to Do

Music and concerts, music and concerts | what to know if you’re headed to the minnesota yacht club festival, gwen stefani, alanis morissette and red hot chili peppers are headlining.

A stage and bleachers next to a river.

For the first time in a dozen years, St. Paul’s Harriet Island Regional Park will host a major rock and pop music festival, dubbed the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival, on Friday and Saturday.

Headlined by Gwen Stefani, Alanis Morissette and Red Hot Chili Peppers, the festival (which despite its name has nothing to do with yacht rock) is promoted by C3 Presents, an Austin, Texas, company that’s also behind Austin City Limits Music Festival, Voodoo Music + Arts Experience and the modern-day Lollapalooza. C3 was the largest independent promoter in the world until Live Nation bought a controlling stake in the company in 2014.

Organizers expect to attract more than 30,000 concertgoers each day.

While the Irish Fair of Minnesota calls Harriet Island home each August, music festivals have had a rough go on the site. The original Lollapalooza (back when it was a traveling festival) landed on the site in 1991, 1992 and 1994, but flooding forced the fest to move to the late St. Paul Civic Center in 1993.

Live Nation attempted to establish a new annual event, the River’s Edge Music Festival, in 2012. Despite big-name headliners Tool and the Dave Matthews Band, the festival didn’t attract enough paying customers to convince the concert promoting giant to return for a second year.

Here’s what folks headed to the Minnesota Yacht Club Festival need to know:

As of Wednesday afternoon, tickets were still available at a number of price points, starting at $135 for one day general admission (or $255 for two days) all the way up to platinum tickets for $925 ($1,395 for two days), which include a number of perks including free food and drinks, front-of-stage viewing and access to an air-conditioned lounge. See minnesotayachtclubfestival.com for details.

Many of the general admission and general admission plus tickets are sold out, but there are verified resale tickets available, some at lower prices than face value.

Getting there

There are two entrances to the festival. The main entrance is at Harriet Island Boulevard and South Wabasha Street, while the west entrance is on West Water Street between Bidwell Street and Plato Boulevard.

There is no on-site parking at the festival, but its website lists numerous downtown St. Paul parking lots that are a 10- to 16-minute walk from the site. Several Metro Transit buses stop a half-mile from Harriet Island. The rideshare drop off is at 49 E. Fillmore Ave. The festival promises “ample bike parking” located near the two entrances.

What is allowed on site

Feel free to bring: Small clutch purses and fanny packs (6” x 9” or smaller) with no more than one pocket, all other bags must be clear and smaller than 12” x 6” x 12”, empty hydration packs and reusable water bottles, strollers, frisbees, binoculars, blankets, basic cameras (no detachable lenses or other accessories), sunscreen in non-aerosol containers (3.4 ounces or less), personal-sized hand sanitizer and factory sealed Naloxone/Narcan kits.

What isn’t allowed

Pretty much everything you would think, including outside food and beverage, coolers, aerosol containers, umbrellas, chairs, wagons, skateboards, drones, fireworks and illegal substances.

Concertgoers must wear securely fastened wristbands that are available at the box office. Wristbands can be activated online to add an emergency contact and to use for cashless transactions (with a pin number). Wristbands that are damaged, lost or stolen can be replaced by the original purchaser one time only for $20. Patrons can leave and reenter at will up until 7 p.m. each day.

There is a guest services tent that has earplugs and a lost and found. Free hydration stations are located throughout the site. Lockers are available to rent for $25 each day or $48.50 for both.

Who is playing

Gwen Stefani sings on stage flanked by two dancers.

Doors open at 12:30 p.m. There are two stages, with staggered performances that do not overlap.

Friday’s schedule includes: Gully Boys (1-2 p.m.), Harbor and Home (2-2:40 p.m.), Morgan Wade (2:40-3:40), Michigander (3:40-4:40), Joan Jett and the Blackhearts (4:40-5:40), Durry (5:40-6:40), Gwen Stefani (6:45-8), The Head and the Heart (8-9) and Alanis Morissette (9-10:30).

The most boats ever will compete in the 100th Bayview Yacht Club race to Mackinac Island

Billed on its website as the “world’s longest continuously run long-distance freshwater yacht race,” the 100th Bayview Mackinac Race is set to start Saturday.

A record-setting 334 boats have registered for the 100th year of the race, shattering the record of 316 in 1985 and a huge contrast compared with the 200 boats that raced last year, said David Stoyka, spokesman for the Bayview Yacht Club, which puts on the race.

Bayview Yacht Club says boats start leaving the Black River in Port Huron around 8 a.m. on race day and will continue leaving until around noon. From the Black River, they will proceed up the St. Clair River, under the Blue Water Bridge, into Lake Huron.

The first scheduled start time in Lake Huron is 11:30 a.m., with starts every 10 minutes until approximately 1:30 p.m. The starts may be delayed due to weather conditions.

This year, for the 100th running, the race will follow the original 1925 route and span 204 nautical miles. From the starting point, the boats will head north along the Michigan shoreline, passing south of Bois Blanc Island, sailing west to east at the finish line between Round Island and Mackinac Island, organizers said.

The range of boats are expected to finish in between 30 and 60 hours.

The sailors

Teams at all skill levels have entered the race, which draws competitors from around the world.  The highly skilled racers know they will cross the bow of competitors within inches. Still, there's always risk of a crash with the slightest miscalculation.

"Everybody recognizes this is super intense," said champion sailor  Tim Prophit , 65, of St. Clair Shores, past commodore of Bayview Yacht Club and owner of Fast Tango, a North American 40 sailboat.

The teams are vying for trophies and flags to show their accomplishments.

The J.L. Hudson Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division I, and the Canadian Club Classic Trophy is awarded to the boat with the best corrected time in Division II.

How can spectators follow the race?

Spectators can go to bycmack.com during the race and click on “RaceTracking” link to watch real-time GPS positioning of all the race boats, or, on your mobile device, download the free app YB Races and select the current race.

Boats will start arriving at Mackinac Island on Sunday afternoon and continue until Monday evening, all dependent upon the wind.

Finishes can be seen from Windermere Point on Mackinac Island at the south end of Main Street.

Sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races are called “Old Goats,” according to the club, while those who have completed 50 are called “Grand Rams.”

"Double Goats" are sailors who have completed 25 Bayview Mackinac races and 25 Chicago Yacht Club race to Mackinac races. This year’s Chicago to Mackinac race encountered strong winds in Lake Michigan , snapping some boats’ masts and tossing one sailor overboard. No one was hurt.

Volunteers who have served for 15 years on the Race Committee are honored with the title “Old Forts,” as designated by the Race Committee.
