Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa

Explore the exotic side of san diego.

The Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a paradisiacal destination located on the shores of Mission Bay and mere steps from San Diego’s famous Pacific Beach. With features including lush tropical gardens and private beach, this Polynesian-themed hotel offers an ideal blend of fun and tranquility all year-round.

Established in 1958, the Catamaran is a paradise featuring more than 1,000 varieties of exotic plants and animals from around the world. Palm trees, bamboo, waterfalls and koi ponds appeal to the senses, while playful parrots delight and intrigue guests.

The Catamaran’s architecture, reminiscent of the traditional Colonial Hawaiian style, boasts accents including totem poles handcrafted in Bali, art pieces such as tapa cloth from Vanuatu and a beautiful front desk constructed of Black Koa wood imported directly from Tahiti.

At the Catamaran, guests are checked into one of 310 guest rooms, studios or suites, each with a private balcony or patio that opens to stunning views of Mission Bay, the Pacific Beach neighborhood and coastline, or the hotel’s lush tropical gardens. All guests are provided a full range of amenities including complimentary Wi-Fi and 24-hour room service.

On-site dining options include Oceana Coastal Kitchen, rated by Zagat as one of San Diego’s most anticipated restaurants and featuring chef-driven surf and turf dishes. Next door to this signature restaurant is Moray’s, where guests can sip on a signature Moray’s Mai Tai, savor a local craft beer and enjoy happy hour specials Monday-Friday. Both venues feature a blend of indoor and patio spaces, the latter lined with tiki torches, fire pit tables and lush palms.

Guests may also choose to grab a bite at Lava Java, the on-site grab and go café, or poolside at the Catamaran’s full bar and grill which serves up barbecue favorites during the spring and summer months. Another standout summer special is the Catamaran’s signature luaus, featuring live performers that guide guests through the cultures of the South Pacific as they enjoy a Hawaiian buffet.

Those who prefer to spend their time on the water can opt for a cruise on the Bahia Belle, a replica of an 1860s-era sternwheeler that tours around Mission Bay. Operating seasonally, the Bahia Belle is a turn-of-the-century, Mississippi-style boat that provides a 45-minute sightseeing cruise of Mission Bay. The 74-foot, 3-story sternwheeler boat offers an observation deck to view the beautiful sites of the 4,200-acre aquatic park.

The Catamaran Spa—the only beachfront spa in San Diego—offers a South Pacific-inspired menu of treatments including massages, facials, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments and more—carried out with all-natural marine and botanical elements. Additional wellness amenities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, beach cabanas, an open air fitness center, seasonal outdoor yoga classes and more.

Further vacation activities include rental paddleboards, sailboats, kayaks, surfboards, bicycles and Segways. The Catamaran is also located within the beach towns Mission Beach and Pacific Beach, where guests can stroll the boardwalk or the iconic Crystal Pier, play at the beach or experience a variety of cafes and boutiques. The resort is within 10 miles of major San Diego attractions such as SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, Downtown’s Gaslamp District and the San Diego International Airport.

On the northwest shore of Mission Bay, the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa attracts visitors looking for a bit of R&R. The property is visibly older than other modern luxury accommodations in the San Diego area. However, each of the guest rooms features a plasma TV and an iPod docking station. Still, some guests can't help but remark that the rooms need an upgrade. But the on-site amenities are better received, with travelers praising the Catamaran Spa for its soothing ambiance and its long list of treatments. Recent guests also commend the hotel staff members for their friendly nature and eagerness to help out. And for many, the resort's Sunday Champagne Brunch was a highlight of their visit. The property charges a $34 resort fee, which covers amenities like hotel-wide Wi-Fi access, in-room water and towel service.

  • Studios and suites have kitchenettes and living/dining areas
  • Pretty pool area with hot tub, loungers, and poolside bar and grill

  • Free Wi-Fi throughout
  • Interiors are dated and could use a refresh; room decor is bland and old
  • Fitness room is small and could use an update
  • Fee for parking

Bottom Line

Although the dated Polynesian-style decor and interiors could use an update, this three-pearl resort in San Diego's Pacific Beach area is a great family-friendly choice with an array of features and direct beach access. Set on pretty grounds filled with lush greenery, koi ponds, and exotic birds, the hotel offers two on-site eateries, a lovely outdoor pool and hot tub, as well as a spa, salon, and fitness center. There's even a beautiful classic boat that offers sunset cruises and family activities, transforming into a nightclub scene in the evenings. The 310 guest rooms are bland and could use a refresh, but they're spacious and outfitted with modern comforts like flat-screen TVs, Keurig machines, iHome docks, and free Wi-Fi, while studios and suites add kitchenettes and dining/living space. For nicer and more modern rooms, check out the similarly priced and also beachfront Paradise Point Resort and Spa in Mission Bay.

Pets allowed, oyster hotel review, mid-range family-friendly resort with dated polynesian-style decor, but pretty green grounds.

hotel catamaran

This beachfront hotel sits on pretty green grounds full of palm trees, lush plants, trim lawns, ponds with colorful fish, and even exotic birds flying about. The greenery creeps inside as well -- a rock waterfall and koi pond in the lobby is skirted in ferns, small palms, and tropical greenery sprouting here and there beneath the sloped roof. Though dated, it somehow works, bringing a kitschy dose of the natural world inside. The place has a Polynesian vibe, with bamboo and rattan furniture, wooden art hanging on the walls, and teak wood elements. Though many spaces could use an update -- like the drab carpeting and beige walls in the lobby and hallways -- the resort is a fine choice with a great location and a good selection of amenities, garnering terrific ratings and reviews from guests.

Across the street from the beach on the shores of Mission Bay, close to restaurants and shops

The hotel is situated across the road from a beach in San Diego’s Pacific Beach community. The immediate area is residential, with private homes and vacation rentals, but there are a variety of shops and restaurants within walking distance. Nearby attractions include Belmont Park (five-minute drive), SeaWorld San Diego (10-minute drive), San Diego Zoo (17-minute drive), Cabrillo National Monument, (22-minute drive), and Legoland California (35-minute drive). Downtown San Diego is about a 15-minute drive from here, while the historic Gaslamp Quarter is 20 minutes away. San Diego International Airport is about a 20-minute drive from the hotel, or around an hour by public transportation. The nearest bus stop is a two-minute walk away.

Spacious but dated rooms, suites, and studios with private balconies/patios; some have kitchenettes

hotel catamaran

Rooms are plain and simple, and though they could use an update, they're clean and offer a decent set of amenities. Decor is dated, with beige walls and carpets, wooden furniture, and beds topped with striped bed runners. They're spacious, though, and have large glass doors that open onto private balconies or patios with views over the surroundings or onto the hotel's green grounds. Studios and suites have kitchenettes with four-burner stoves, ovens, microwaves, sinks, toasters, and full fridges, as well as living/dining space with blue couches, coffee tables, and chairs flanking small round tables. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges (full fridges in units with kitchenettes), iHome docks, laptop safes, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are equally bland decor-wise and quite small. They're outfitted with shower/tub combos, toiletries, and hairdryers; bathrobes can be found in the closets.

Two dining options, lovely pool and hot tub, direct beach access, spa and fitness facilities, and plenty of meeting rooms

hotel catamaran

The hotel offers two on-site dining options: Oceana Coastal Kitchen is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, serving Californian fare in an waterfront setting (outdoor seating overlooks the beach), while Moray's is the more casual option serving light bites and drinks, with a fun outdoor space with fire pits and tiki torches. A Sunday Champagne brunch is also available, as is room service. For an alternative dining/drinking experience, guests can hop onto the Bahia Belle, the hotel's classic sternwheeler that offers family hour and cocktail cruises on Mission Bay. Drinks, snacks, and family activities are available during the evening, while at night, there is music and dancing, and on the weekends live DJs.

The hotel's lovely, green grounds include a pretty outdoor pool and hot tub surrounded by loungers and tall palm trees, plus there's a poolside bar and grill. The resort has direct access to a beach, where guests can use the free beach chairs and umbrellas. Various water sport rentals and lessons are available here, including surfing, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking. Bike and Segway rentals are also available.

The hotel has a spa that offers massages, body wraps, hydrotherapy treatments, facials, and other treatments. There's also a salon that offers hair styling, makeup, and nail services. The fitness room offers a handful of cardio and strength training machines as well as weights. Family-friendly facilities include a game room with a good selection of arcade games. Other facilities include 14 on-site meeting rooms available for various events, as well as a gift shop stocked with souvenirs, snacks, and drinks. There is a fee for both self-parking and valet.

5 unexpected wellness experiences for parents at four seasons maui.

Wellness experiences at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea offers a range of classic and ... [+] new-for-summer wellness experiences, from a $5,100 Waves and Wellness journey to oceanfront IV drips.

Topping the hotel bucket lists of many Hawaii-loving parents, Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea is known for its oceanfront location, five-star service and laundry list of child-friendly amenities. What these parents may not yet know is that the property now offers a handful of new and luxurious wellness experiences that can make a family trip just as rejuvenating, as it is fun. From oceanfront IV drips to a new $5,100 ‘wellness and waves’ excursion, here are five unexpected wellness experiences that parents can’t miss at Four Seasons Resort Maui.

Oceanfront IV Drips

An onsite wellness collaboration with LA-based health optimization and longevity center Next | Health means that guests of the Four Seasons Resort Maui can receive IV drips and B12 shots as well as exosome, ozone and stem cell therapies onsite.

Launched in 2022, the collaboration’s IV drips might be of particular interest to jetlagged parents, or grown-ups who just need a boost. An IV menu includes a range of targeted formulations, from overall longevity to gut health and muscle recovery. All drips are administered by a licensed nurse practitioner, and start at around 30 minutes to absorb. While those who do want some quiet time can escape to the onsite Next | Health facility for any service , those who are trying to fit in a drip during naptime can receive one poolside or oceanfront.

The Four Oceanview Fountain Pool Cabanas offer maximum privacy, space and views.

A Homebase With A View

Those traveling with young children especially understand the challenge of seeking shade and privacy at a busy resort. Four Seasons Resort Maui offers a number of cabana configurations and locations throughout the adult and family pools (70 of them are complimentary), as well as overlooking the ocean. Notably, 11 ocean-facing cabanas called Sanctuaries are available for advanced booking starting at $395, but are also available at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis day-of.

The most private and spacious option are the four Oceanview Fountain Pool Cabanas , which start at $1,250 and offer complete privacy and open up to an oceanfront lawn overlooking the water. Oceanview Fountain Pool Cabanas include two lunch entrees and either a bottle of Champagne or four cocktails. Lawn games like cornhole can be setup upon request for children, while a quick text to an onsite nurse practitioner from Next|Health can deliver an IV drip of choice to the cabana.

‘house of the dragon’ season 2, episode 1 recap and review: blood and cheese, imf issues serious u s dollar collapse warning as the fed primes bitcoin ethereum and xrp for a crypto price boom, a kid-free swim.

Made HBO-famous by White Lotus season one, but already a cult-favorite to grownups looking for a littles-free zone, the property’s Serenity pool is a perfect excuse to take a parents’ afternoon off to reconnect with a partner over ube coladas or Mai Tais. With an infinity edge looking out over the Pacific and neighboring islands, and a swim-up bar serving cocktails and lunch, it’s a convivial, child-free perch to drink in the luxury of it all.

Parents of children five and up can utilize the Kids For All Seasons Program (the only complimentary kid’s club on the island) while parents of younger children can be pointed to a trusted nanny service by the property’s concierge.

Oceanfront Lomi Lomi

Of course no trip to Hawaii is complete without a Lomi Lomi massage, but the unexpected element is enjoying one seaside. A nondescript thatched spa hut hidden off the side of a walking path between the Sanctuary cabanas and the water is a favorite of returning guests. Inside are two massage tables for the most requested spa service at the property, an oceanfront Lomi Lomi massage.

The hale can be used for a solo service, though similar to adult-pool access, Kids for all Seasons or a nanny service can be used for a two-parent wellness escape. The Lomi Lomi massage is available as a 50-minute or 90-minute treatment, and uses a variety of essential oils to complete the sensory experience of a seasoned massage therapist healing muscles to the sound of the waves below.

A new Waves and Wellness experience gets guests on the water for a private deep blue snorkeling ... [+] experience, followed by stand-up paddle (SUP).

Private Snorkel And SUP

A new Waves and Wellness program, suitable for all ages as long as children can stand-up paddle, features a full morning of luxury exploration on the water. A private, completely customizable catamaran experience begins first thing in the morning with onboard breakfast, followed by a ‘deep blue’ swim or tropical snorkel. Once the sail concludes at Wailea Beach, guests are greeted by a stand-up paddleboard (SUP) instructor for a SUP yoga class against the serene coastal background. At the end of class, guests receive a green juice to conclude the experience, which starts at $5,100.
