Hunter 18.5

Simple, fun and forgiving—perfect for the sailing family.

We’re all romantics. Some of us have it worse than others, of course—those with the proverbial wandering eye—and our backyards are a visual testament to both our passion and our lack of impulse control. We’ve got a small marina’s worth of vessels in various states of repair—the sprit-rigged dinghy, the leaky catboat, and the sweet little double-ender that just needs some cosmetic work—in truth we own more boats than we could restore in three lifetimes. Despite what we tell ourselves (and our spouses), not all boat purchases are especially rational decisions.

But the same thing that seems to draw us to certain boats blinds us to others that might, arguably, be a better fit. Some of the more common production fiberglass trailersailers are good examples. Staring at them probably won’t make your heart sing— no portlights, no sweeping sheer line, and not much wood—just angular windows, predictable lines, and lots of white fiberglass. But over the years we’ve found that many of these popular factory boats—which typically aren’t great in any one category but are pretty good in most—deserve more consideration. The Hunter 18.5 is one we felt warranted a closer look.

hunter 18 sailboat

The buxom little 18.5 was produced from 1987 to 1993 (a quite different water-ballasted Hunter 19 superseded the 18.5 and was built from 1993 to 1996). The 18.5 featured a modern-looking cockpit and a cabin with as many as four berths. The sliding cabin hatch could be slid forward and hinged up, potentially offering something akin to standing headroom below, and the optional “Weekender Package” included a galley with ice chest, stove, and bucket sink. There was also a portable head located beneath the aft end of the V-berth—everything a small family might need for cruising.

We seem to live in a sailing world where the emphasis is on the extreme. I'm not complaining. I love to watch the videos of those AC45 cats screaming across the bay. High-powered sprit boats rule the monohull one-design classes, providing planing speeds and exciting upwind rides dependent upon a skilled crew and skipper. The boat that is neglected today is the good old "utility" daysailer, designed for a fun afternoon where no one will wind up going swimming.

Let's Get to Know Each Other

Let's connect, why it's important to partner with a designer on your hunter 18 sail.

The design is the most critical part of your new sail. Ensuring the sail fits and performs its best is a must for our crew. The Precision Sails Design team are experts at their craft. Unlike other sail lofts all of our sailors work one-on-one with a designer to perfect their Hunter 18 sail.

No Two Hunter 18 Sails Are Alike

There are many factors that affect the performance and design of your sails. Location, sailing experience, and weather conditions all come into play when picking the perfect sail. Two mainsails made for two Hunter 18’s in California and Florida will have different designs, sailcloth, and options based on what is best for the sailor.

Taking measurements is easy. All sailors work alongside our measurement team to measure and confirm their rig specs. This helps ensure your design is flawless and allows us to extend our Perfect Fit Guarantee to all of our sailors.

1994 Hunter 29.5

1994 Hunter 29.5

Mobile, Alabama

This vessel is in very good condition for its age. The owner has added a nice water pressure gauge conveniently located at the engine. There are no signs of mold or mildew. Inside, it smelled and looked fresh and clean. Other than a slight bit of oxidation on the chrome, everything was in tip top shape and very impressive. The seller has taken pride in taking such good care of her. She and the owner just came back from a trip to the Keys. Per the seller, everything is in working order. Stock #391985 Classic 1994 Hunter sailboat that has has upgrades added Like most Hunter sailboats, the Hunter 29.5 offers maximum accommodations, a large comfortable cockpit, and reasonable sailing performance at an affordable price. The Hunter 29.5 was designed by Hunter's in-house staff under Rob Mazza. It exemplifies a boat that appears to have been designed from the inside out rather than from the outside in. Like all production boats in this size range, the Hunter 29.5 is constructed from fiberglass composites utilizing a modular type of construction. The hull, deck, structural grid, and interior components are molded separately and then assembled into the finished product with structural adhesives or secondary bonds of fiberglass and resin. The deck is cored with balsa wood, and the hull is a solid composite. There is a nice solid clear windshield which makes steering and navigating an easy task and also an upgraded hard top that will last a very long time. Also located atop the helm is a set of solar panels with a Jupiter inverter. The 29.5 has a rather large cockpit for her size that opens at the stern to a molded swim platform. At anchor, this becomes an integral part of the cockpit adding even more usable space. This is one of the 29.5's more appealing features, and it makes getting in and out of the water or dinghy quite easy. Wheel steering is at the helm at the aft end of the cockpit, and there are two seats incorporated into the stern rail for passenger seating. Although the seller has upgraded the wooden steering wheel, the stock wheel is included with this purchase. Because the side decks are narrow with rigging shrouds at the deck edge, to go forward, the best path is over the cabin trunk. The foredeck has a small anchor locker which will accommodate a 13-pound Danforth with chain leader and 100 feet of half-inch rode. There are also two sturdy anchor rollers forward. This vessel houses three anchors. Below deck, the cabin is wide open with the only privacy offered by a fully enclosed head. There is a V-berth forward, and the main saloon features a large U-shaped dinette that comfortably seats four adults. The head and a small hanging locker are to starboard, and the galley is to port with a two-burner non-pressurized alcohol stove, a refrigerator, and a single sink. Aft and below the cockpit is an athwartship double berth. Auxiliary power is provided by a two-cylinder, 18 hp Yanmar diesel contained in an engine box beneath the companionway steps. This workhorse of an engine dominates the market in boats of this size and is very dependable. Quick access for maintenance is limited but, if necessary, the engine box can be removed easily for more serious work. The 29.5 is designed with simplicity in mind, and the large mainsail and small fractional jib certainly make tacking and sail handling a breeze for the short-handed or single-handed sailor. Included you'll find an autopilot as well as an Autohelm handheld steering device Without a traveler, the mainsheet attaches to the steering console directly in front of the helmsman. Sheet winches are also within easy reach of the helm. The B&R rig features long spreaders that are swept back 30 degrees eliminating a backstay. This necessitates tacking downwind to avoid impaling the mainsail on the spreaders, but I think that most would not find this much of an inconvenience. With the proper tacking angles, this can actually be a faster way to sail downwind. Inquire with your representative to find out more items that this seller is including with the sale of this beautiful boat! Model Passage 42

Category Cruiser Motorcycles

Length 42.0

1993 Hunter Passage 42 - PROTEUS Set up for serious off-shore passage making and fully self-sufficient off-the-grid cruising. Has recently (beginning 2014) sailed in England, the coast of Europe and the western Med (2015) and crossed the Atlantic to the Caribbean (Nov 2015). Came up through the Caribbean (spring 2016). This yacht was never chartered, always privately owned, and meticulously cared for. All servicing and installations were done to a high standard. All safety equipment is up-to-date. The yacht participated in the ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers) which requires a high standard of safety equipment, training, and inspections. The yacht has been certified as a Class-A offshore sailing yacht. All documentation is available and will be conveyed to future owner. The previous owners lived aboard, loved every minute of it, but are now moving back on land for a few years and do not want the boat to sit and atrophy. She needs to go to a good home and to someone who will continue the journey! She has taken care of her owners for years and will continue to do so for many years to come. S/V PROTEUS is "overbuilt" and designed for extended offshore passage-making and off-the-grid cruising. Just want to jump all the way down to the USVI instead of going the super-slow way all the way through the Bahamas? Okay. The previous owners just made a passage from the Dominican Republic straight to Ft.Lauderdale (March 2016). Seven days offshore? No problem. PROTEUS has a thicker hull, reinforced rigging, extra backstay (B&R rigs normally don't have them). Massive solar panels, watermaker, genset, wind generator – all these advanced features make for a yacht that can go anywhere, do anything, and actually be comfortable while doing it. The solar panels were upgraded in 2015, and the owners report that they lived entirely off the solar panels and almost never used the generator while underway. Occasionally, you'll hear people scoff at production yachts for being only for "coastal" cruising. "Oh, I'd never cross an ocean in that!" Not the Passage 42! Did I mention she's cruised in the North Sea and English Channel recently? When there were only aluminum-hull Ovni's and other "extreme" sailboats and expedition yachts at the docks, PROTEUS was right in there with the best of them. All image were made in June 2016 except the two exterior shots, which were made in Spain and Gibraltar in June 2015. More photographs are available on request. Here is an interior walkthrough. Final Thoughts from the Owner:We truly love this boat. Because of our time on PROTEUS, we will never be the same. Everywhere we go and everything we do for the rest of our lives will be colored by our experiences sailing this yacht. And it's not like we're ridiculously rich – we did everything on a modest budget, mostly on savings – but we did it, and you can, too. If you were looking for a chance to cut the lines and live like you always dreamed, PROTEUS could be that chance. It was for us. England, Ireland, Gibraltar, Morocco, half the islands in the Caribbean... it was all in reach, just outside the window. We look back on it now and think: "What on earth did we just do!?!" But we did. PROTEUS took us there. She'll take you there. Hunter 18.5

Hunter 18.5 is a 18 ′ 4 ″ / 5.6 m monohull sailboat designed by Hunter Design Team and built by Hunter Marine between 1987 and 1993.

Drawing of Hunter 18.5

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Advice on Hunter 18.5

Mark Rountree

I am interested in looking at/purchasing a 1988 Hunter 18.5 with a wing keel and trailer. Can anyone give me what to look for in this boat? Was the boat solid and dependable? Was the boat easy to trailer launch? I will be sailing mostly on a small lake near my home and this will be my first sailboat in some time - is it a good starter boat? Any other information that anyone could give would be helpful. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Crazy Dave Condon

Trailer suggestions The boat was solid but remember the bigger the boat, the more stable it is as a rule fo thumb. The trailer needed to be upgraded. First, add a longer extension bar. Remove the keel guide and put abetter one on. The wings use to get caught on the original. Check the fenders as they could come loose. Crazy Dave condon

Hunter 18.5 I've had an '88 H18.5 for about three years now, and I like it. I feel that it has been a good starter boat. I think that if I was to do it over again I would buy a slightly bigger boat, as the small cabin doesn't allow a lot of the things I'd like to do. My biggest difficulty with the boat, though, is not the sailing, that is fine, it is that I do not like the trailering aspect of it. While the fixed keel does have advantages, I do think that the fixed keel means that it is going to be harder to put into and out of the water -- the ramp has to be that much steeper. I would heed Dave's advice above, he gave me the same advice and I have installed heavy wooden guides that guide the keel into the housing. That has made it much easier to get the boat on and off the trailer. I feel that the boat sits high on the trailer and do not feel comfortable stepping the mast, though as I've become more familiar with it I find it easier each time I do it. You will need at least one other, and probably a couple of other, friends to help you step the mast each time, it is not a one man job. I keep my boat on Lake Erie, and it sails fine there, though the lake can be very rough at times. I did miss many days of sailing last summer because the lake was too rough. I will be keeping it on Sandusky Bay this summer, and hope to do some racing with it. The bay will offer more shelter and I should be able to sail her much more often. If you have further questions, please email me at [email protected] or give me a phone call at 330 847-0975, and I'll be glad to answer any questions you might have about the boat.

Do not go up ;the mast in a boson's chair One other thing I would like to mention. I use to a farmer who made moonshine behind my dealership. Every Saturday night, guess where I was. Sippin good old peach brandy. Anyway, to avoid dropping the mast, I went up the mast in a boson's chair to change the wind vane as I wanted to go sippin suds. Well, my buzzel butt was too heavy and the mast broke. Customer had dinged his mast badly previous and was curious as to why he had a noticable new mast. Crazy Dave Condon

18.5 MY first boat was a 18.5. We found out quickly that the cabin was too small by the time we loaded everything for an overnight stay. Secondly, in very very light air you do need to have forward motion ( water moving over the fixed keel) to maintain steerage. Since we were inexperienced we had some anxious moments as the boat slipped sideways without any rudder control. If you can afford a larger boat, I would recommend starting with a 23.5. you will be happier in the long run.

18.5 I HAVE BEEN SAILING AN 18.5 FOR 11 YEARS NOW. THIS IS BOAT NUMBER 7 FOR ME INC A BAYFIELD 25.WHICH I LIVED ABOARD WHEN I WAS IN MY "EARLY" 20S IT"S BEEN A GREAT BOAT. EASY TO LAUNCH AND SAIL SINGLEHANDED. MY BEST ADVISE WOULD BE TO BUY THE BOAT THAT MATCHES THE WAY YOU SAIL. DONT BUY BLUEWATER CRUSER TO DAY SAIL. SOME TIPS ON SAILING THE 18.5. WHEN RAISING THE MAST RUN THE JIB HALYARD TO FORWARD CLEAT, WHEN MAST IS UP TIGHTEN JIB HALYARD THEN GO FORWARD TO ATTACH FORESTAY. ONE MAN JOB "5'7 150". ALSO INSTALL LONGER TOUNGE ON TRAILER FOR SHALLOW LAUNCHES. WE SAIL MS GULF COAST. TAKE MOSTLY DAY TRIPS TO SHIP AND CAT ISLAND "8-12 MILES OFFSHORE. SAILED FROM SHIP ISLAND TO LONG BEACH HARBOR ONE TIME ON A REACH IN 25 KNOT WIND ON A REACH. BOAT HANDLED VERY WELL UNDER REEFED MAIN. COVERED 14 MILES IN ABOUT 2HR.

Thank you Thank you for the advice.

COMMENTS

  1. The 18

The Marlow-Hunter 18 is designed to serve a wide spectrum of sailors, from novices to salty veterans. Constructed of rugged, durable fiberglass, the Marlow-Hunter 18 opens up endless possibilities on the waters around you. The kids will learn to sail safely in the Marlow-Hunter 18 with its generous freeboard and ease of handling. Families can take daytrips in safety and comfort.

  2. The Hunter 18

the new Hunter 18 replaces the Hunter 170, which for several years was a mainstay in Hunter's line of small daysailers. Like the 170, the 18 can serve as both an easy-to-manage family daysailer and as a lively performance boat for those with more experience. At a glance the two boats look quite similar, sporting open transoms, centerboards and small sprayhoods forward. On closer inspection,

It takes into consideration "reported" sail area, displacement and length at waterline. The higher the number the faster speed prediction for the boat. A cat with a number 0.6 is likely to sail 6kts in 10kts wind, a cat with a number of 0.7 is likely to sail at 7kts in 10kts wind. KSP = (Lwl*SA÷D)^0.5*0.5

  4. Hunter 18

Hunter has gone from rotomolded polyethylene to all-fiberglass construction for its small-boat range this year, and the new 18 is the first of the new boats to be launched. Longer and beamier than the 170 it replaces, it features a retractable sprit for an A-sail and has an open transom.
