MEET THE TEAM
This year’s Wild Oats XI Rolex Sydney Hobart crew is not one to be messed with. The team of 20, lead by Skipper Mark Richards, is comprised of some of the world’s most talented and applauded sailors, including numerous America’s Cup, Olympic and Volvo veterans. With nearly 250 combined races between them, the key to this yacht’s impressive history has undoubtedly come down to picking the right crew, and sticking with them.
While Wild Oats XI owners, the Oatley family, have kept the boat competitive through continuous modification, the winning formula has been keeping the crew turnover to a minimum, ensuring that everyone onboard knows the boat inside out and works effectively together as a team. Under the guidance of Mark Richards, the team is vying for a record breaking 10th line honours win in this years edition of the Rolex Sydney Hobart.

2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart: ‘A pretty tough race’
“Skipper Mark Richards and his Hamilton Island Wild Oats team of 21, … took one day 13 hours and 38 minutes to complete the 628 nautical mile passage in fast downwind conditions” writes Lisa Ratcliff from the Whitsunday News. Read the full article for more.
HAMILTON ISLAND WILD OATS’ SHOT AT 10 LINE HONOURS IN THE ROLEX SYDNEY HOBART YACHT RACE
In any other sport, a scoresheet listing nine line honours wins and a combined 238 Rolex Sydney Hobarts among the crew of 21 would suggest that team is the pre-race favourite. The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, however, is a sporting contest like no other; while nothing is left to chance in terms of preparation, luck is as much a factor as previous success. Hamilton Island Wild Oats’ long-time skipper Mark Richards says “this year’s super maxi competition is red hot – Andoo Comanche, Black Jack and LawConnect. All have amazing teams with people flying in from all over the world to sail these incredible boats.” Onboard the Oatley family’s Hamilton Island Wild Oats are three newcomers: key internationals Murray…
THE ROLEX SYDNEY TO HOBART RACE
Regarded one of the most gruelling yacht races in the world, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is a challenge on most sailors’ bucket list.
Over the past 76 years, the event, which starts at 1pm from Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day, 26 th  December, has been entrenched as an icon of Australian summer sport.
From the spectacular start in the harbour the fleet sails out into the Tasman Sea, down the south-east coast of mainland Australia, across Bass Strait, which divides the mainland from the island state of Tasmania, then along the east coast of Tasmania. At Tasman Island the fleet turns right into Storm Bay for the final sail up the Derwent River to the historic port city of Hobart.
The ultimate race trophy is the Tattersall’s Cup for the winner on corrected time; this is how supermaxis and 30-footers compete on a level playing field. Then there’s the coveted line honours trophy, the J.H Illingworth, and divisional prizes which recognise the hard-fought battles among boats of a similar size.
Over the 628 nautical mile course, navigators must continually consider currents, the sea state, and conditions, in terms of light winds through to the possibility of extreme weather events. In the back of every crew’s mind is the possibility of a race-ending breakage, hitting a floating object at speed and keeping the crew rested, fed, and safe right to the end of what is an endurance event.
At the finish line, Hobart’s waterfront is overrun with crews enjoying a beer or two, celebrating their arrival and regaling tales of their adventure – all thoughts of never doing a Hobart race again quickly forgotten.
It is an event that Tasmanians love to host so if you’re down that way, make sure you wander around Kings Pier marina, chat with competitors, and get up close and personal with the Rolex Sydney Hobart fleet.

ROLEX SYDNEY HOBART YACHT RACE: DEFINED BY AN INTREPID SPIRIT AND CAMARADERIE
Geneva, 23 December 2021 - The Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race holds a towering status in the world of sailing. It captures the attention of a nation and enjoys a glowing international reputation that has long transcended the traditional boundaries of the sport. Rolex has partnered this legendary competition and its organizers, the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA), since 2002.
Over its three-quarters of a century history, the race has provided a platform for human achievement and endeavour, qualities that align with Rolex's core philosophy and which underpin the Swiss watchmaker's more than 60-year involvement in yachting. The 76th edition is scheduled for the traditional lunchtime start on 26 December, with a fleet of more than 90 yachts expected to take on the famous 628-nautical mile (1,010 kilometres) course.
Some 60,000 sailors and 7,000 yachts have taken part in the race since its inception in 1945. From its beginnings, competitors have been drawn to the scale and unpredictability of the challenge, and to the demands on their skills in both preparing and handling their yacht.
After a spectacular departure from Sydney Harbour, the fleet heads south along the New South Wales coast of the Tasman Sea before crossing Bass Strait to tackle the east coast of Tasmania, Storm Bay and the final 12-nm (22 km) stretch in the often decisive, and sometimes cruel, Derwent River, before finishing in Hobart. Most entrants spend four to five days at sea. Watch systems and resources need to be managed assiduously. To negotiate the testing conditions requires willpower, experience and intuition.
Sir Ben Ainslie, a Rolex Testimonee, four-time Olympic gold medallist and helm of the Great Britain SailGP Team, is a past competitor and says: The experience gave me a real appreciation of the sailing prowess and camaraderie inherent in offshore racing, especially within the Corinthian boats taking two or three times as long and being not quite as comfortable as the maxis. A neat part of these races is the fact that handicap means, whatever the size of boat, everyone has a chance to win. The weather plays a part but smaller amateur-sailed boats often win against the professionals.
Winning the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race overall after time correction and securing the coveted Tattersall Cup guarantees a place in yachting folklore. Matt Allen's Ichi Ban has won two of the past three editions, in 2017 and 2019. Should the Australian boat emerge victorious again, she will join two of the race's most celebrated names, Freya (1963, 1964, 1965) and Love & War (1974, 1978, 2006), on three victories.
Beyond the competition to win overall, the consistent presence of some of the world's most impressive 100-foot (30.5 metre) Maxi yachts has produced epic contests in the battle to be first across the finish line. The race record currently stands at 33 hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds, set by Comanche in 2017. Arriving in Hobart inside two days, a marker first set in 1999, has been achieved in each of the past four editions.
The Rolex Sydney Hobart attracts both professional and Corinthian sailors. Leaders from the political, business and entertainment worlds, as well as stars from other sports, have been drawn to participate. This all adds to the race’s appeal, which is already bolstered by a distinctive position in the sailing calendar and the pioneering feats of those who have confronted its many obstacles over the years. Matt Allen, a former Commodore of the CYCA, spent decades trying to win the event as a skipper. His story is one of persistence, of the time it can take to acquire the experience and knowledge to succeed. Having completed his 30th race to Hobart in 2019, he remarked:
“Over the years, I’ve seen amazing boats participate but it’s actually the people that make this race and ocean racing what they are.”
Intrepid human spirit lies at the heart of the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race’s creation and remains its foundation today. Rolex is proud to support a sporting contest that mirrors the brand’s own Perpetual spirit: humbly adapting to the elements, constantly seeking to improve and summoning one’s deepest resources.
A NATURAL AND SUPPORTIVE PARTNER Rolex has always associated with activities driven by passion, excellence, precision and team spirit. The Swiss watchmaker naturally gravitated towards the elite world of yachting six decades ago and the brand's enduring partnership now encompasses the most prestigious clubs, races and regattas, as well as towering figures in the sport, including ground-breaking round-the-world yachtsman Sir Francis Chichester and the most successful Olympic sailor of all time, Sir Ben Ainslie. Today, Rolex is Title Sponsor of 15 major international events - from leading offshore races such as the annual Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race and the biennial Rolex Fastnet Race, to grand prix competition at the Rolex TP52 World Championship and spectacular gatherings at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup and the Rolex Swan Cup. It also supports the exciting SailGP global championship in which national teams race identical supercharged F50 catamarans on some of the world's most famous harbours. Rolex's partnerships with the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia, Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, New York Yacht Club and Royal Yacht Squadron, among others, are the foundation of its enduring relationship with this dynamic sport.

Teasing machine.
Eric De Turckeim's NMYD 54  Teasing Machine  is one of the top international contenders in this year's race. As Vice Commodore of the Royal Ocean Racing Club, De Turckeim has been crowned the overall winners of the RORC Transatlantic Race twice, in 2017 and again this year. They then backed up their win at the 2023 RORC Myth of Malham Race. The yacht also claimed victory in the 2022 Rolex Middle Sea Yacht Race.
De Turckheim came agonisingly close to winning the Rolex Sydney Hobart in 2015, when his previous boat under the same name enjoyed strong winds in the first 24 hours to race down the south coast of NSW but things changed when the yacht hit the notoriously fickle Derwent River.

Oli the cat completes Sydney to Hobart yacht race to fanfare at dock, after a week at sea
The first Sydney to Hobart yacht came in days ago and the fanfare on Hobart's waterfront has died down, but that hasn't dampened the welcome for feline entrant and fan favourite Oli.
Oli the cat completed the bluewater classic with his owner Bob Williams on Sylph VI just before 8:30am.
It was the last yacht across the finish line in a time of seven days, 19 hours, 26 minutes and 15 seconds, after a torturously slow trip up the River Derwent.
Mr Williams was emotional upon his arrival in Hobart.
"I don't know why, I think it's about the cat, actually," he said.
"I think it's quite amazing how people have taken a shine to Oli, it's not something I expected.
"For me, Oli is part of my crew, part of the boat."
Oli, Bob and crew were greeted by about 40 wellwishers, and a banner declaring them the winners of the "feline division".
Among them was Del Smith, who travelled from Margate, 30 minutes south of Hobart, to reward Oli with treats, toys and a letter from her own cat, Miffy.
"Obviously he was at sea for Christmas and I just wanted to give him a little gift," she said.
"Well done Oli."
And the crew of another Sydney to Hobart yacht, Showdown, left Oli a personalised cat carrier so he could join in the traditional post-race beer at Customs House pub.
Co-skipper Chris Warren said it was a fantastic way to arrive on his birthday.
"The welcome this morning's been particularly special, with people singing Oli a song as we crossed the finish line after having a pretty long, slow trip up the river," he said.
From 'ordinary little moggie' to 'international celebrity'
Oli is a seasoned sailor who has called the yacht home for about five years.
Mr Williams said the cat was just an "ordinary little moggie" who was his friend and mate, but the international attention was nice.
"We'd heard on the grapevine that Oli had attracted a bit of attention and so, I guess, crossed a few lines in terms of who's interested in the Sydney to Hobart," he said.
"But I really didn't expect him to have such a big fanbase when we got here and it was really quite overwhelming."
He believes Oli made the race feel accessible to the wider community.
"Me and the cat are just a couple of ordinary people."
Mr Warren has a simpler theory.
"I think cats win the internet, that's all I can come up with."
Photographs and videos show Oli luxuriating on a green couch, helping Mr Williams navigate and soaking up some love and cuddles.
While light winds and sloppy seas made for a frustrating journey for the human crew, for Oli, it was damage caused to his litter tray.
"A kind lady has offered to go and buy him a new cat tray," Mr Williams said.
Mr Warren said it was an eye-opener to sail through four or five-metre waves and have Mr Williams declare that they were not that big.
"That and having Oli jump on me and wake me up while I was in my bunk — scared the life out of me!"
Is Oli the first cat in the Sydney to Hobart?
While it's an impressive achievement for a small cat, Oli is by no means the first feline sailor in the race.
There are media records of at least one other cat taking part, as far back as 1947, in the second Sydney to Hobart race.
The article, from the Pittsworth Sentinel on January 10, 1947, reported "the cat in the crew belonged to Mr and Mrs Brian O'Brien, of the gaff ketch, Connella".
The O'Briens mentioned were husband and wife duo Brian (Mick) O'Brien and Dagmar O'Brien.
The O'Briens, along with their cat, were forced to retire in Bass Strait and did not complete the race.
If Dagmar O'Brien had finished the race she would have done so in the same year as Jane Tate — who is remembered as the first female competitor to finish the race.
