Catalina (ex Timoneer)
Exceptional design and performance
Timoneer is a 45m (147ft) ketch designed by Dubois Naval Architects. The owners of this groundbreaking project asked us to create a vessel that would offer complete comfort during their extended voyages in remote areas.
Timoneer therefore became a powerful ketch-rigged yacht endowed with many cruising features. These include the option to open up the sides of the deck saloon, offering spectacular 360 degrees views while steering or relaxing.
Her beautifully designed and finished interior, designed by John Munford Design, offers a gracious and traditional atmosphere as well as the ideal supportive environment for the owner’s art collection.

Superyacht Timoneer wins the 2011 Dubois Cup
The Dubois Cup again took place at Porto Cervo from the 4th to the 6th of June. The regatta, now in it’s second event year, was established in 2007 solely for Dubois yachts. This year saw fourteen Dubois-made superyachts arrive; eight of which raced. Racing yachts included Twizzle , a 57.5m new build launched this year.
The famously intricate coast around Porto Cervo provided the backdrop for racing, but the first day of racing was frustrated by a day of showers and light winds. The bad weather was due to exceptionally low pressure, according to Yacht Club Costa Smeralda sports director Edoardo Recchi.
As a replacement for the competition of racing, superyacht crews found another diversion. Rumour says that the crew of the 40-metre Tenaz first fired water bombs with slingshots at the new ketch Twizzle . The battle spread to the entire fleet.
Monday saw the yachts back to business, as weather conditions grew more favourable. A midday pursuit race took place, with each of the impressive sailing yachts turning the Monaci lighthouse as they overtook each other in competition for the leadership. The vintage Dubois Timoneer took advantage of the worsening wind conditions. She won through the tactical decision to gybe and take an inshore course in conditions that should not have favoured her. "You've got to be either clever or lucky to do what we did, and today we were both," said her jubilant skipper and helmsman, Phil Wade. Sixth placed yacht Drumbeat ’s captain Michel Personnic admitted "everybody wanted to beat Timoneer today."
2009 winner Ganesha was given a five minute penalty for crossing the start early. Including this penalty, she lost out on first place by two minutes, achieving fourth place after Zefira (third place), and Nostromo (second).

- Aloha-J of Cariba
The Schooner ‘Aloha-J of Cariba’
Although her first log-books are long since lost to history, she has witnessed many milestone events in the world, undergone changes in her own name and ownership, experienced challenging sea-voyages and weather conditions, and fought hard as a participant in many competitive regatta sailing events.
Her first decade cruising in Spanish and western Mediterranean waters coincided with the Spanish Civil War, and thereafter the equally bloody years of WWII, and it is believed that she may have been involved in certain clandestine operations between Spain, France, and the African shores during this time, and later again during the time of the ‘private-trade’ in these waters.
In 1976 she was purchased from her then Belgian owner – carrying the name ‘Boheme’ at the time – by a German buyer, and renamed ‘Cariba’, continuing to cruise both the eastern and western Mediterranean seas, and spending much time initially in Ibiza and Mallorca. She has often voyaged to the West Indies and has traversed innumerable times the unpredictable waters of the Mediterranean Sea, eastern and western sectors, regularly visiting Italy, France, Greece, and Turkey during the 80’s and 90’s under the command of Gert Kunzendorf, her caring Master for 35 years.
One of her current co-owners was first invited aboard the yacht as a guest in 1990, when she was named ‘Cariba’, and as a young yacht-captain was much taken by her fine lines and innovative and comfortable layout – both above, and below decks. Some 20 years later in 2010, when she became available for purchase while lying at Palma de Mallorca, this same captain – now not so young anymore but not quite yet an octogenarian like the stately yacht…! – and two close friends of his, were able to purchase her and keep her voyaging at sea and continuing to provide a superb platform for sailing and entertaining, and as a space for the on-going exchange of old sea-stories, maritime knowledge, and philosophical ideas.
On agreement with her previous owner, her name was changed back to match her original and first name, although her last name was also incorporated in the re-naming, thus maintaining threads of her historical journey; she become the ‘Aloha-J of Cariba’.
As ‘Aloha-R’ she was originally rigged as a Gaff-Schooner in 1930, and with her gaff-mainsail, she sailed under a powerful configuration of sail. However in later years, in order to make her more passage-friendly for cruising family and crew, her mainsail gaff was removed and she was re-rigged as a Bermudan Schooner carrying a Marconi-type rig, flying Mainsail, Main-staysail, Foresail, Roller-yankee, Fisherman, and Topsail. The removal of her gaff and Main-topsail – and hence her vast and powerful mainsail sail-area – greatly reduced her competitive ability, and she is no longer a match for her similarly drawn sister-ships such as ‘Malabar X’ and other similar gaffers, which still carry their original rig and sail-area. The re-rigging did however result in a very easily manageable sail configuration, allowing safe and comfortable passage-cruising in even brisk and heavy weather – without the need to often reef or reduce sail. Her current owners are now also able to handle all sails with ease with a small crew, and even sail her single-handed from time to time; the only down-side being that she now no longer achieves the expectation of old whilst racing against competition of similar design.
Ever the graceful and eye-catching lady ‘Aloha-J of Cariba’ continues to visit the ports and anchorages of the Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Ibiza, and Minorca, occasionally racing in the various local regattas, and with a passage-plan drawn to continue to visit old stamping-grounds of Mediterranean France, Italy, Croatia, and the Eastern Mediterranean, providing as always a delightful movable feast and continuing to teach and nurture all who sail with her.
Her owners have kindly made her available for the Marine Inspirations mentoring programme of four days at the new ‘Ibiza Rendezvous’ Regatta between 8th and 11th October, where she will host two young aspiring sailors from South Africa during the event
The Ketch ‘Timoneer’
Launched at Vitters Shipyard in Holland to an Ed Dubois design, ‘Timoneer’ is a powerful 45 metre super-yacht cruising ketch. She was built for an American owner who was well experienced in yachting and who’s family are passionate about sailing. Sailing both Mediterranean and Caribbean waters each year, ‘Timoneer’ has covered many sea-miles in her prestigious career. Recently berthed in Nelson’s Dockyard in English Harbour, Antigua, in the Caribbean, her owner kindly invited two local youngsters to join her professional crew during the Antigua Superyacht Challenge in January – giving these young local sailors a taste of what it is like to crew aboard, and race aboard, a powerful and magnificent yacht of this calibre. What a dream experience for these two young men…!
The Perini Navi Sloop ‘P2’
“Designed by Philippe Briand and built by Perini Navi in Italy, ‘P2’ is a 38m high performance cruising boat. ‘P2’ features 3 guest cabins and 3 crew cabins and a lightweight modern interior. Whether she is on the race track or island hopping with owner and guests, ‘P2’ attracts admiring glances due to her sleek lines and powerful sail plan.” The yacht begins racing this week in the dynamic ‘Loro Piana Regatta Rendezvous’ in Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands (10 – 14 March), kindly inviting two young local sailors aboard to participate and experience the racing and sailing atmosphere aboard in company with ‘P2’s professional crew.
The 52m classic Pendennis Schooner ‘Adela’
Originally built in 1903 in Southhampton at J.G Fay and Co. to a design by W.C Storey, ‘Adela’ was restored and remodelled by Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth, England, and naval architect Gerard Dykstra between 1996 and 2000. Today she blends her original charm and elegance with modern equipment technology, presenting a most competitive racing yacht and not to mention stunning sight under full sail out on the water.

Sailing yacht Timoneer wins light-airs gybing duel at Dubois Cup 2011 Luck, judgement and light airs conspired to create classic competition during Race 2 of the 2011 Dubois Cup. Veteran cruising yacht Timoneer took full advantage of contrary conditions and fickle breezes that ought not to have favoured the heavier boats, and took both line honours and the overall prize.

“You’ve got to be either clever or lucky to do what we did, and today we were both,” said her jubilant skipper and helmsman, Phil Wade.
Off to a prompt midday start off Sardinia’s Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, the eight-yacht fleet of Dubois-designed superyachts made an awe-inspiring spectacle as they set off on the pursuit event at three-minute intervals. Competition to windward was intense. Nostromo, second to start, was first to round the Monaci lighthouse, followed by the 50-metre Zefira, making up five places. Third to round the rocks was Ganesha, 39 metres, then the 41-metre Inmocean and Timoneer, 45 metres. The 57-metre Twizzle, the largest yacht in the fleet, led Drumbeat, 53 metres, and the 40-metre Tenaz.

As the wind began to fail tacticians had crucial decisions to make. Timoneer gybed and took an inshore course that was to prove decisive as the rest of the superyacht fleet stood well out to sea as the wind began to falter.
Sailing Yacht Nostromo’s owner Andrew Cook admitted he was disappointed with the outcome. “We should have won this race,” he said. “Conditions favoured the lighter boats.” S/Y Twizzle was rewarded with fifth overall. “With hindsight, we might have made a few tactical errors,” her captain, Gordon Percy, conceded. ” The boss is disappointed. But this is only our third regatta – we’re still learning.”
The ultra-competitive sailing yacht Ganesha, 2009 Dubois Cup winner, sustained a five-minute penalty for crossing the start a few seconds early. “We put in ten gybes on the downwind leg, and missed third place by two minutes, including the penalty. So we learned a lot today,” said tactician Matt Humphries.”
“Events like this can be very educational and useful for the crew, as well as fun,” said the captain of sixth-placed Drumbeat, Michel Personnic. “But everybody wanted to beat Timoneer today.”

Trophies all round at the Dubois Cup Yacht Race:
Glittering prizes close ‘best ever’ Dubois Cup A glittering poolside prizegiving and dinner dance, complete with live jazz band, brought the curtain down on the 2011 Dubois Cup last night. Hailed as the most successful Cup so far, the superyacht regatta was hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.
Presenting the trophies to participants – 14 magnificent craft, including two Dubois-designed motor yachts – Ed Dubois paid tribute to owners and crew for taking part and making the event one of the most relaxed, stylish and friendly on the superyacht circuit.
Every yacht received a hand-engraved black crystal bowl as a memento of the third Dubois Cup, in the superb sailing waters off Sardinia’s yachting capital, Porto Cervo. Those placed first, second and third in the racing were also presented with trophies from the YCCS. Overall winner and 2011 Cup holder was Timoneer, who received the Dubois Cup, a sculpted carbon-fibre sail designed by Dubois Naval Architects. The beautifully-sailed Nostromo was second while the sleek and powerful Zefira took third place.
The competitive sloop Ganesha was awarded for her participation in all three Dubois Cups so far, and after inviting all owners and captains aboard to an impromptu cocktail party after the first race was abandoned, Twizzle was recognised for her hospitality. The new motor yacht Turquoise, easily the largest spectator craft, was singled out for being the latest addition to the Dubois fleet.
The 2011 Dubois Cup was also the launch platform for the Dubois Child Cancer Fund , a charity set up with the support of yacht owners in recognition of Minna Dubois, now aged ten and doing well, who was diagnosed in 2005 with neuroblastoma, a rare but invariably serious type of childhood cancer.
The fourth Dubois Cup will take place at the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda Sardinia in 2013.

Timoneer Triumphs at the Dubois Cup
- By Yachting Staff
- Updated: June 8, 2011
Dubois Cup 2
Porto Cervo, Italy. 6th June 2011.
Another hugely successful edition of the Dubois Cup closed with the victory of the 44.8-metre ketch Timoneer. Organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda from 4th to 6th June, the Dubois Cup 2011 saw nine sailing superyachts competing and a spectator fleet of sail and motor yachts bringing the total stable of Dubois-designed vessels lining the quays of Porto Cervo Marina to 14. Andrew Cook’s 30-metre Nostromo took second place in the overall classification ahead of Salvatore Trifiro’s 49.7-metre fast cruising sloop Zefira.
Racing got under way on schedule today and the fleet were set a 17 nautical mile course which took them up along the coast of north-east Sardinia, through the strait between Capo Ferro and the Isole delle Bisce islet before an upwind beat to Monaci island and a downwind run to the finish line off Porto Cervo. Northerly breezes of approximately 7 to 8 knots accompanied the fleet at the starting line but began to die out towards the end of the race. The 2010-launched Zefira was the fastest yacht around the course but Timoneer’s handicap rating allowed her to claim overall victory.
As with every edition of the Dubois Cup, Ed Dubois, founder and CEO of Dubois Naval Architects, made a very personal appeal to support research into childhood illness. The Dubois Child Cancer Fund has recently been set up to fund specific research into the childhood cancer Neuroblastoma and the regatta served as a platform to launch the initiative. New for this edition was also the commitment of Dubois Naval Architects and Dubois Yachts Ltd to balancing the event’s carbon footprint, making this one of the first superyacht events to do so.
“It is always a real pleasure for us to host this event. Ed Dubois’ extended family of owners and crews have returned to Porto Cervo to enjoy some wonderful racing in a beautiful setting and to have some fun. This event always brings a real atmosphere of camaraderie and sportsmanship and I am already looking forward to the 2013 edition and an even bigger Dubois fleet.” commented Riccardo Bonadeo, YCCS Commodore.
The Dubois Cup 2011 closed in style with a prize giving ceremony followed by a barbecue and dancing at the YCCS Clubhouse.
The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s 2011 sporting calendar continues with the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta taking place from tomorrow, Tuesday 7th June until Saturday 11th June.
