Domus, the 40m Trimaran Concept that Aims to be Zero-emission Unveiled

Domus Trimaran

Rob Doyle Design and  Van Geest Design  have collaborated to present Domus, a 40-metre sailing trimaran concept with an interior volume that rivals a 60-metre motor yacht. Domus, whose name in Latin means a single-storey house built around an atrium, uses this design aspect to create a spacious feeling onboard.

Domus is a unique design ,  combination of solar power, hydro regeneration and hydrogen fuel cells , that give the concept unlimited range with zero emissions. The trimaran spreads across two decks. Main guest areas are all on one deck. The main saloon has a bar.

“ The uniquely designed combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology and hydrogen fuel cells gives Domus unlimited range with zero emissions ,” the design team said.

Two owners’ suites include access to private lounges, while the other six staterooms welcome guests in their elegant interiors. Domus is no less opulent that much bigger motor yachts, showing off a spa area with a swimming pool, a gym, the main salon with a bar, and even a cinema room.

TDomus will be able to heel at an angle of two degrees to reduce drag and improve speeds with maximum comfort and minimal rolling. The Dutch firm says “ a guest on board will experience a level of comfort underway, far superior to any sailing or motor monohull. ”

Meet Domus – the solar electric sailing yacht concept created as a collaboration between Rob Doyle Design and Van Geest Design. This 40-meter sailing vessel promises to deliver the interior volume of a 60-meter yacht and can propel itself using wind, solar, hydro regeneration, and hydrogen fuels cells to deliver “unlimited range.” All without any carbon emissions. Did we mention it has a movie theater?

Domus emerged last year as a collaborative concept dreamt up between superyacht developers Rob Doyle Design and  Van Geest Design . Dutch-born yacht designer and project manager Pieter Van Geest utilizes 2D and 3D computer aided design (CAD) in accomplishing detailed modeling like the renderings you’ll see below. His company has a massive portfolio of non-traditional maritime vessels in addition to Domus.

The team at Rob Doyle is based in Ireland and brings three decades of experience to the superyacht segment of design, focused on high-performance, innovative, and timeless vessels that prioritize, safety, speed, and comfort.

The culmination of both these teams has led to something special – a solar trimaran that not only priorities space on deck, but sustainability throughout the entire vessel. Check out Domus.

trimaran concept

Domus is a 750-gross-ton trimaran sailing superyacht

Just when you thought solar catamarans were “superyacht “enough, the designers behind Domus have kept true to the “super” title with their 40-meter trimaran concept. Fully silent with zero emissions, the design team intends for the Domus concept to one day set sail as the world’s first solar superyacht with truly unlimited range.

In an interview with Boat International , Domus’s designers spoke to the sustainable propulsion implemented throughout the vessel, allowing its passengers to sail anywhere and everywhere without worry:

The uniquely designed combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology, and hydrogen fuel cells gives Domus unlimited range with zero emissions. An optimized system of solar power and battery storage allows the yacht to motor during daylight hours and then transfer over to the battery system at night. This also means that Domus is fully silent with zero emissions while at anchor.

While Domus is applaudably eco-conscious, its overall design is also quite aerodynamic to ensure the utmost performance at sea. To reduce drag and deliver maximum speed, the design team says Domus will be able to heel at an angle of two degrees.

Across two separate decks, Domus promises over 8,400 square feet of space, closer to that of a 60-meter yacht, but on a 40-meter footprint. The name Domus itself dates back to the Latin domesticus , representing a single-story home built around an atrium.

That design philosophy has been adapted to the modern maritime age aboard the solar trimaran, as most cabins open up to a central atrium. Accommodations include two owner’s suites, complete with their own lounges, in addition to four VIP guest cabins.

Amenities include a cinema room, gym, saloon with a bar, plus a spa area complete a swimming pool. Who wants to trek all the way down below deck into the ocean anyway?

Domus not only represents a new way of designing superyachts to be spacious, safe, and sustainable, but also shows how far technology and design has come and continues to evolve across vessels like the trimaran. Per the designers:

Just because superyachts are what they are now, does not mean they should stay this way. We were constantly looking at every aspect of the design and saying, ‘is there a better way?’ We truly believe that this project will redefine what a multi-hull sailing superyacht can be.

Looking ahead, both design teams state they are already working on an even larger yacht with zero emissions they hope to bring to an actual shipyard soon. If and when that happens, trust we will be following its progress. Learn more about the Domus Trimaran in the video below:

40-meter-long domus trimaran concept aspires to be the first truly zero-emission superyacht

Domus trimaran by van geest and rob doyle.

Designers Van Geest and Rob Doyle introduce ‘Domus Trimaran’, an impressive 40-meter-long zero-emission yacht of 750 gross tonnage. The unique vessel presents an optimized combination of solar power, hydro regeneration & hydrogen fuel cell systems, offering an unlimited range and noiseless, carbon-free cruising. Prioritizing speed, space, and sustainability, the Domus concept aspires to become the first-ever truly zero-emissions superyacht.

bungalow-like interiors

For Domus Trimaran, Van Geest (see more here ) and Rob Doyle (see more here ) have designed a spacious interior of 780 sqm. In addition to the large internal spaces, the superyacht features multiple covered exterior areas, while also allocating all main guest areas on one deck without steps. In this way, Domus generates a unique villa/bungalow-like onboard experience.

The designers have looked at the Domus design from an architectural point of view. ‘Family life in a way is about protection. So why not build around that, create the protected spaces and maximize the functions of the space available in this one-level setup.’ they explain. All spaces are strategically laid out, to enjoy outside views and maintain a connection with what is happening but, at the same time, they are all connected to the communal exterior and interior spaces.

starting from ‘why not?’

The idea for the Domus Trimaran concept started from a simple question: Why Not? ‘Just because superyachts are what they are now, it does not mean they should stay this way.(…) We were constantly looking at every aspect of the design and saying, ‘I know we do it this way normally but is there a better way?’  the designers share.  ‘Therefore, we truly believe that this project will redefine what a multi-hull sailing Superyacht can be.’ they add.

After calculating the smallest vessel size that can host a one-floor layout without it being too bulky, the designers started forming Domus as an amalgamation of different innovative ideas. Rob Doyle Design focused on naval architecture, performance, and structural feasibilities, while Van Geest Design developed the styling and layouts.

Domus: The 40m Trimaran Concept that Aims to be ‘zero-emission’ Unveiled

Rob Doyle Design and Van Geest Design collaborated to create Domus, a 40-meter sailing trimaran that boasts an interior volume comparable to a 60-metre motor yacht. Domus is a zero-emission yacht that aims to be the fastest, most space-efficient, and eco-conscious yacht to exceed 750 gross tons.

“The uniquely designed combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology and hydrogen fuel cells gives Domus unlimited range with zero emissions,” the design team said.

“An optimised system of solar power and battery storage allows the yacht to motor during daylight hours and then transfer over to the battery system at night. This also means that Domus is fully silent with zero emissions while at anchor.”

Domus was designed to perform, not only because of its eco-credentials. It will be able to reduce drag and increase the speed at an angle of 2 degrees. This will ensure that the cruise is comfortable and with little rolling.

The yacht’s interior area covers 783 sqm, split over two decks. Six guest cabins, including four VIPs and two large owner’s suites, are available. Each has its own lounge area. The hotel offers a gym, a cinema and a saloon with bar. Domus also has a spa with a swimming pool.

Domus is a single-storey home built around an atrium. Many rooms open up to the central atrium. This design creates an open, lofty feeling aboard the yacht. Rob Doyle and Van Geest Design worked together to research the safety and practicalities of trimarans. “We strongly believe if you want the benefits of multi-hulls at a 40-metre-plus size, the only practical solution is a trimaran,” the design team added.

“Just because superyachts look the same as they do now does not mean that they should remain this way. We looked at every aspect of this design constantly and asked ourselves, “Is there a better way?” This project will change the definition of a multi-hull sailing superyacht.

The design duo is also working on a larger version for a shipyard in addition to the 40-metre concept.

The 40m Trimaran Concept aims to be The First Zero-Emission Superyacht

Rob Doyle is one of the new generations of yacht designers tackling the modern challenges of the large yacht business. With a solid 20-year career evolution in the large yacht sector, he and Van Geest Design have come together to present a 40-meter sailing catamaran – Domus. With an interior volume that rivals a 60-meter motor yacht, she aims to go eco-conscious cruising and become the first ‘zero-emission’ yacht over 750 GT.

“Just because superyachts are what they are now, does not mean they should stay this way. We were constantly looking at every aspect of the design and saying, ‘is there a better way? We truly believe that this project will redefine what a multi-hull sailing superyacht can be.”, say the designers.

40m Domus yacht

Domus , meaning a single-story house built around an atrium in Latin, the yacht has a beam of 35m and features an interior space of 780 sq. m, all on one deck. The craft borrows aspects of this design to create a lofty, open feeling on board. Rob Doyle and Van Geest Design have done extensive research into the practicalities and safety elements associated with trimarans.

The trimaran spreads across two decks. She can accommodate 12 guests in six guest cabins, with four VIPs and two sizeable owner’s suites, each equipped with its own lounge area. There is a bar in the main saloon. Other amenities include a cinema room, gym, and saloon. Domus also features a spa area with a swimming pool, making the trimaran fun and exciting.

Inside of the 40m Domus superyacht

To help reduce drag and improve speeds, she can heel at an angle of two degrees. This will also ensure a comfortable cruise with minimal rolling. Domus is designed with an emphasis on performance. “The uniquely designed combination of solar power, hydro-regeneration technology, and hydrogen fuel cells gives Domus unlimited range with zero emissions,” the design team said. The trimaran powers through the daylight hours and transfers over to the battery system at night. This also means Domus is entirely silent with zero emissions while at anchor.

Alongside the 40-meter concept, the design duo is also working on a larger version of the idea for a shipyard. “We strongly believe if you want the benefits of multi-hulls at a 40-meter-plus size, the only practical solution is a trimaran,” the design team added.

As compared to catamarans, trimarans help keep down the costs. Domus has all the systems and engineering in the central hull, just like a standard construction to keep things simple. The main hull takes all the rigging forces, thus maintaining crossbeam structures simpler and generally the overall system being more straightforward. The team behind Domus are the design masterminds of over 60 superyachts and has extensive detailed design experience, knowledge, and data, which makes it easy to undertake a mammoth of a project.

DOMUS Trimaran 40 meter Zero-emission Yacht Concept

The DOMUS is an innovative concept design for a 40m zero-emission trimaran. The designers behind the trimaran are Van Geest and Rob Doyle , and the design duo amalgamated several innovative ideas to create the first yacht of 750 gross tons with zero carbon emissions.

The yacht combines superyacht luxury with an eco-friendly design, delivering a new direction for the yachting industry.

4

DOMUS yacht interior

Van Geest and Rob Doyle have combined their ideas to design the spacious interior of DOMUS. DOMUS means a single-story house built around an atrium with many rooms opening off the central atrium area.

The design is built around the idea of these traditional abodes, which originated from Rome and Pompeii.

The trimaran has used this concept to create an open, lofty feeling in the onboard area. The unique shape gives the yacht expansive real estate on board.

The interior of the DOMUS is a 783-square-meter deck split over two decks. There are six cabins on board, with four VIP cabins and two large owners suites with individual lounge areas.

The interior is a floating home on the water with cutting-edge designs and technology.

The spaces are laid out strategically to maximize the family feel of the trimaran and maintain a connection with the views. The interior includes a cinema room, gym, and a saloon with a bar.

2

The idea that sparked the design of the DOMUS was “Why not?” The design duo believes that just because superyachts are the way right now, why couldn’t they be done in another way.

The yacht was an amalgamation of different ideas, with Doyle focussing on naval architecture, performance, and structural feasibilities. Van Gees developed the styling and the layouts for DOMUS.

The vessel’s exterior is sleek and sophisticated and has been designed to bring the exterior of the ocean and views outside into the living spaces with large windows and a central open plan feel to the spaces inside.

The designers are working on a larger version of the 40m concept for a shipyard which could be the future of luxury yacht design.

3

Specifications

The DOMUS will be the first 40m long zero-emission yacht of 750 gross tons. The unique vessel will be powered by solar power, hydro regeneration, and hydrogen fuel cell systems.

The exterior is lined with solar panels to achieve the zero-emissions goal for DOMUS. The result is a vessel with an unlimited range, high speeds, space, sustainability, and carbon-free, noiseless cruising.

The tri-hull of the trimaran offers several design benefits that the designers are firm believers in. The trimaran is designed to heel 2 degrees to allow the weather hull to come out of the water.

This concept reduces drag and increases performance. This means a high level of comfort onboard for the guests, especially compared to a sailing or motor monohull, which experiences high rolling angles.

Large trimarans are proven to be faster than catamarans of the same size, and this kind of high performance would be impossible to achieve in a superyacht catamaran.

The trimaran is significantly cheaper to construct than a catamaran because it needs only one system in the center hull instead of two.

The yacht is truly the amalgamation of luxury yacht design and eco-friendly sailing.

2022: the yacht concept is announced by designers.

The renowned designer Steve Kozloff unveiled its latest concept. It’s called Trident, and it’s a massive trimaran that’s loaded with incredible features. It has two helipads, a beach club with retractable decks, tilting masts that allow it to travel under most bridges, and much more.

trimaran concept

Steve Kozloff is known for creating radical designs, and the  Trident  is no exception. The vessel measures 328-ft (100 meters) in length, and it features six decks packed with high-end amenities. If the concept ever made it to reality, it would be the largest trimaran in the world.

trimaran concept

But its impressive size is not the only thing that stands out when it comes to the Trident. It’s outfitted with a Solid Sail system that allows its free-standing masts to tilt to 70 degrees forward. This makes it possible to navigate below most bridges. And that’s not all. The masts also rotate 360 degrees so the vessel can be oriented in any direction.

trimaran concept

Each mast’s boom has an integrated crane system that can load and unload supplies, water toys or seaplanes. Speaking of aircraft, the Trident has two dedicated helipads where aircraft can be stored onboard. It also has a full beam garage that has enough room to store two tenders, a Nemo U-Boat Worx submarine, and other water toys. Moreover, it can store up to six self-inflating lifeboats underneath its main decks.

trimaran concept

The Trident has a luxurious beach club where guests can relax. And if that’s not enough, the vessel includes two spas and two large pools as well. On the upper deck, it has a salon with a piano bar and entertainment center that offers incredible panoramic views thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows.

trimaran concept

The concept accommodates 26 passengers and a crew of 20. The owner has a generous suite filled with luxury amenities. Guests can access different decks via an elevator or by using the available walkway network.

trimaran concept

Other features included onboard are the heated masts, handrails, and doors, which reduce icing issues. In terms of performance, the Trident can navigate at a top speed of 17 knots (20 mph/ 31 kph). It can also cruise at 14 knots (16 mph/ 26 kph) and cover 7,710-mile (12,408-km) distances with diesel power only. The range can be extended when fitted with diesel-electric systems and sail power.

Pi Superyachts reveals trimaran concept Dragonship 25

Pi Superyachts has revealed its latest concept, a 25 metre trimaran that is available in both sailing yacht and motor yacht guises. Named the Dragonship 25, this striking multihull design is the follow-up to the 80 metre concept that the company revealed back in 2014 .

Pi Superyachts adds that the Dragonship 25 would be built to RINA standards with an aluminium hull and superstructure, while the broad 15.5 metre beam allows for 540 square metres of internal space.

Accommodation is for up to 16 guests and eight crewmembers, and key external features include a pair of foredeck seating areas and the flybridge, which comes complete with a superyacht spa pool and a hardtop bimini.

The main deck is designed around a large central reception area, with an adjacent bar, dining area and superyacht gym . Tender storage is provided in the outboard hulls, both of which feature their own passarelle.

In its motor yacht guise, the Dragonship 25 would be fitted with twin 600hp Cummins engines, drawing on a total fuel capacity of 4,000 litres for a maximum cruising range of 3,000 nautical miles.

Those looking for a more eco-friendly experience can opt for the Eco-Lux version (pictured above), which uses a fixed wing system, similar to the America’s Cup racing catamarans.

Pi Superyachts explains that the Autosail system has been developed by Jack Manners-Spencer to operate without any running rigging and features a fully rotatable carbon fibre mast.

A third option has also been designed, with a traditional fore and aft cutter rig and an aluminium mast. Pi Superyachts estimates that prices for the Dragonship 25 would start at around €5.5 million.
