Trimaran charters
12 Knots offers trimarans charter – type of yachts that consists of three hulls: main hull and two smaller on the sides. Polynesian boat builders invented first trimarans. Construction of trimaran makes it a stable and spacious sailing boat offering comfort even for a big crew. Trimarans are well known for their speed and seaworthiness. Sport trimarans can reach speed over 45 knots (more than 50 mph), while standard cruising trimaran can do over 15 to 20 knots.

What Is a Trimaran?
A trimaran, is a multihull sail boat that featur es two smaller outrigger hulls connected by lateral beams to a wider, central main hull. The trimaran ’ s unique three hull design offers sailing enthusiasts the best of both worlds - the sailing capabilities of a monohull and the speed of a catamaran. Also referred to as a ‘ double outrigger ’ , the design of this vessel makes them incredibly stable, buoyant , and fast .
Initially developed by Austronesian people over four thousand years ago, t rimarans were o riginally used for fishing in Southeast Asia ; and , are still consider ed the traditional fishing boat in this part of the world . Trimarans have also been used in times of war and as ferries to transport people, goods , and automobiles.
Yet, it wasn’t until a Ukrainian immigrant , by the name of Victor Tchetchet , developed a more modern ized sailing trimaran in 1945 -which piqued the interest of other boat builders who have since enhanced his design. Fast forward to the 1 960’s and 19 70’s when the trimaran made a name for itself in the boating world- quickly gain ing popularity as both a n exceptional recreational and racing sailboat.
Trimaran Charters
Today’s modern trimarans are revered in the boating world for their remarkable speed and seaworthiness. The design and construction of trimaran yacht charter makes this sailboat exceptionally stable, so they are difficult to capsize even in the roughest waters. The ir interior and exterior also offers comfortable sailing; and depending on the size, enough room to accommodate a large crew or group of passengers .
12 Knots offers a terrific selection of exciting trimaran charters available in destinations throughout the Mediterranean, Atlantic , and Caribbean. W hether you want to rent a bareboat and sail off on your own or hire a crewed sailboat to ensure a relaxing, stress - free vacation with family or friends , 12 K nots can assist you in finding the perfect trimaran for your trip . At 12 Knots , you’ll also be able to choose from an impressive collection of the most popular models such as : Corsaire Marine, Motive, Exploder, Neels, Dragonfly, Farrier Marine , and more!
Trimarans, Catamarans, and Monohulls- What’s the difference?
As with any boat rental you choose for your vacation , it’s important to know the differences in the sailboats a vailable for charter. While some people will prefer a leisurely vacation where they can cruise along the coast , there are other s who will prefer a more exhilarating high - sea s adventure flying across the open water . Learning more about the different characteristics and features of these sailing vessels can certainly help you select the best charter for your needs, purpose , and the type of sailing trip you want to experience .
Monohull
Design, Performance, Stability , and Safety
A m onohull is a traditional sailboat featuring only one hull and sails. They can be powered by sails or an engine .
All m onohulls are designed with a ballast keel which is necessary to ensure its balance and stability on the water .
A m onohull ’ s keel will increase displacement (weight of the water moved as the boat sails) and produce a greater wetted surface area- which will increase the drag ( resistance on the water) ; creating a lower , sometimes more favorable , cruising speed .
The heel (tipping to one side or the other) can be greater than that of a multihull sailboat (up to 20 degrees at speed) which for many passengers , can be either exciting or a nuisance .
Space and Comfort
Depending on the size , a monohull can be quite comfortable and spacious.
Although unlike its multihull counterparts , the cabins, bathrooms , and gallery are located in the boat’s one hull (below deck) .
The ‘triangle’ shape of a mon o hull’s bow makes it less space-efficient than a multihull.
Docking and A nchoring
Docking at a marina is both effortless and less expensive because of its maneuverability and width .
Unlike multihulls, t he keel on a monohull doesn’t allow it to anchor close to shore or sail in shallow waters.
Multihull
Design, Performance, Stability and Safety
Catamarans have two hulls and trimarans have three. They can be powered by sails or an engine (s) .
Designed without a keel, a multihull ’ s weight is distributed between the hulls which creates balance and stability on the water .
A m ultihull’s lack of a keel will produce a minimal wetted surface area, which in turn will cause less drag on the water - creating more lift and speed .
Although multihull sailboats certainly have a reputation for speed, Trimarans surpass both monohulls and cata marans in regard to speed; with effortless acceleration, sport trimarans can reach speed s over 45 knots (more than 50 mph), while standard cruising trimaran can do over 15 to 20 knots .
In terms of stability, a trimaran surpasses that of a catamaran or a monohull. A trimaran’s design of one main hull and two over - hanging hulls makes this vessel safe and more stable -faring much better i n unpredictable weather /rougher waters and less likely to capsize than its counterparts.
With a limited heel of only 5-10 degrees at speed , multihulls offer a much smoother and predictable sailing cruise on the water -safer for small children and elderly passengers
A trimaran’s living space is limited because it’s centered on the middle hull. Catamarans offer a more spacious living area ; both offer comfortable cabins located in the hulls .
Docking and A nchoring
Multihulls are much wider than monohulls, so docking options might be limited and fees will be slightly higher .
Unlike a monohull, multihulls can anchor in almost any bay. The absence of a keel results in having a lower/shallow draft which enables a cat or trimaran to venture much closer to shore .
Cost of a Trimaran Rental
On the average , you can ren t a trimaran for as little as $2 , 100 US dollars per week cruising Marseille - with luxury charters costing up to $14,000 per week sailing around Martinique .
With special offers and booking discounts offered at 12 Knots, renting a trimaran is one of the most fun and exciting ways to travel the globe. Whether you decide on a bareboat rental or a hire a crew for your next vacation or race , the cost of your charter will always depend on the following factors:
Trimaran size, age, and model
Type of charter -crewed/bareboat
Destination
Duration of trip
Season/time of year
Amenities
For the best price and value for your money, you’ll want to contact 12 Knots to take advantage of their booking discounts and charter special offers
Best Destinations for a Trimaran Charter
Although Trimaran charters are available throughout regions around the world, The Mediterranean, Atlantic, and Caribbean are some of the most popular destinations with home bases in the British Virgin Islands (BVI), Martinique , Guadeloupe, Corsica, South of France , Northern France, and Croatia .
Charter Trimaran Requirements
Bareboat trimaran charters in many countries will require a sailing license to operate the vessel. However, depending on the destination, a license might not always be necessary- but documentation stating your experience and sailing history will be requested . Of course, that shouldn’t stop you from chartering a trimaran, as you can always choose to book a skipper for your sailing vacation .

Trimaran - 10 Things You Should Know About the Trimaran
- The launch by Austal of the longest multi-hull vessel ever is physical proof that a shipyard has finally found a way to tap the huge potential of a vessel type that was actually invented many centuries ago by the Hawaiians: namely the 'trimaran' or stabilised monohull. We can at last design a vessel for speed and comfort without one (design goal) compromising the other.
- Austal can make the main (centre) hull long and slender to gain higher speeds with today's engines AND at the same time design the side hulls, which are necessary to make this long hull stable, in a way that means that the roll action of the vessel can be "tuned" for comfort.
- But the design is complex: of all the shipyards in the world it is only Austal that has proven it has the skills and experience to carry out the development. So many aspects must be taken into account in optimising the design: the number of combinations is almost unlimited.
- Today catamarans dominate the high speed vessel market around the world: their wide decks, ability to load bow and stern, and their efficiency through the water have meant this very versatile platform accounts for over 70% of all high speed ferries being delivered. Their versatility and economy will mean that catamarans will remain a major part of the market going forward too. But in many cases where a catamaran today plies a route through difficult sea conditions the trimaran will provide a premium service for the discerning operator.
- The enhanced sea-keeping of the trimaran will help operators offer better service on existing routes plus also begin operations on new routes where, until today, sea conditions had made them too challenging.
For example, an operator investigating a new route discovers that for sea keeping (passenger comfort) a 100 metre long catamaran is required. This platform has the capacity for 1000 passengers and 250 cars by nature of the large box-style garage deck and superstructure of the catamaran design. The cost of this vessel is proportionate to the volume and power required to operate at high speed (40 knots). Unfortunately the operator does not have the capacity to fill such a vessel so he cannot afford to purchase or operate the 100 metre catamaran. A smaller catamaran i.e. 60-70 metres with the appropriate passenger and car carrying ability will be unable to handle the sea conditions and so will likely lead to the demise of the business through passenger dissatisfaction and cancelled sailings.
With the trimaran design it is now possible to build a 100 metre vessel with the same or better sea keeping as the 100 metre catamaran but without the correspondingly large box-style garage deck and superstructure. The trimaran can effectively be a long slender monohull only with side supports. The car carrying and passenger volume is located only above the centre hull and can be adjusted to equate to that of a 40 to a 100 metre catamaran.
The cost of the vessel therefore becomes proportionate to the desired capacity rather than overall length as the flexible nature of the trimaran design allows construction volume and powering requirements to more closely follow capacity requirements.
The trimaran enables the operator in this example to achieve both the capital investment and sea keeping suited to his particular route.
- Endorsement of the trimaran design has come from the highest possible levels. In the commercial market Fred. Olsen, S.A. is a world leader in developing high speed vessel technologies. It was due to the foresight and determination of Fred. Olsen, S.A. that we see the first (and world's largest) trimaran launched by Austal on September 25, 2004. The 127m long, 30m wide "Benchijigua Express" is a trail-blazing and revolutionary craft.
- The other major endorsement of the trimaran concept has come from the US Navy who has chosen the Austal trimaran (the team is led by giant US defence contractor, General Dynamics) as one of two vessel types that will go through final design this year and move into production during 2005. The project is the Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and ultimately the US Navy sees a need for up to 60 of these vessels.
- The trimaran has already become the basis of a large high speed vehicle ferry and a surface combatant project. Other applications that are already emerging include passenger-only ferries, patrol vessels and supply vessels. In some of these applications the benefits of the trimaran comfort at zero/low speed will also be utilised. The trimaran also has a very low wake-wash and this is a vital characteristic that can be exploited on ferry services close to communities.
- May 2005 is a big month in the history of high speed transport. Following the delivery from Austal via the Cape of Good Hope the full promise of this technology is shortly to be realised in service.

On the main deck of the LEEN 56 is a large, fully equipped galley, a comfortable dining area and the owner's cabin. At the front of the boat is the wheelhouse entirely glazed, with navigation equipment and a cosy saloon with an L-shaped sofa, which allows you to relax and enjoy the view. A gangway door gives direct access to the deck to facilitate docking, undocking and mooring manœuvres. The owner's suite , with a majestic view over the sea thanks to the large glass panels, extends over two levels on the starboard side of the trimaran. The bedroom is on one level with an island bed, a desk, a bookcase, large cupboards and a wardrobe. The bathroom, accessible by a direct descent, occupies the lower level of the float. It offers 2 basins, a shower and a separate toilet. The standard layout of the LEEN 56 includes 3 double cabins with shower rooms: the owner's cabin on two levels, a guest cabin located at the front of the boat in the central hull with its separate shower room and another guest cabin located in the port-side hull with an en suite shower room. The layout of the LEEN 56 can be completed with 2 additional cabins at the rear of the boat with single and/or double beds and separate shower rooms. In a 5 cabin layout, the LEEN 56 can accommodate up to 11 passengers. The quality furniture is designed in light coloured wood and made by quality cabinetmakers. The layout and fixtures of the outdoor areas (cockpit and flybridge) are left to the buyer's desire. The flybridge is accessed from the cockpit via an external staircase. Under the steps to the flybridge is a heated wardrobe for jackets, foulies, sea boots or diving suits . Protected by the high bulwalk encircling the deck, the exterior circulation on each side is carried out along covered exterior gangways, a distinctive sign of true ocean-going vessels.

Discovery 20 Trimaran
See Discovery 21 .
The Discovery 20 trimaran is a fast, fun daysailer with the potential to be a camper/cruiser for the adventurous. The D 20 design has been updated as an exciting and powerful new daysailer. It is available as a kit or a complete boat. This design is intended for enjoyable day sailing, although there is space below deck for camping gear. There is a 7' by 7' cockpit that is roomy for 4. You sit upright, with a backrest, not sprawled on a trampoline. My 75 year old mother-in-law found the boat very comfortable. The D-20 is quite fast; the all up weight of the boat is 527 pounds. She utilizes a daggerboard, a rotating aluminum mast and streamlined crossbeams. Construction is wood/epoxy/glass composite.
I really never appreciated how fast the Discovey is until about 10 years after she was designed when I raced mine in a Wednesday night yacht club series against a new Newick 24' trimaran (longer, wider, taller rig, new laminate sails). The other boat was sailed by a very experienced sailor and I was expecting to get my butt kicked. During the first upwind leg (in about 8 knots breeze) the Discovery 20 blew everything away, including a fleet of Etchells. I was so impressed I hove to at the weather mark and waited for the other tri to catch up so that I could get a better comparison on the down wind leg (he had a spinnaker I didn't). As expected, I lost some ground here but not really that much, and I was able to get it all back on the next upwind leg.

Folding System
Legendary ability, unbeatable reliability.
Folding and unfolding a Corsair trimaran takes only a minute. With just 4 bolts to remove, it is easily managed by one person, and is normally done while afloat. Simply raise (to fold) or press down (to unfold) the inboard end of one cross beam. It can be done from the safety of the cockpit and only a little force is needed due to the folding system’s carefully balanced geometry, and the movement of the floats being mostly horizontal.
The solid aluminium folding struts have absolute control over the folding motion and prevent flexing or racking. A stainless steel bolt on the inboard end of each beam secures the floats for sailing. Crucially, wingnets remain attached during the folding process – their frictionless fixing allows them to tension themselves appropriately through the folding process. The system is so simple and balanced that Corsair trimarans can even be folded while motoring.
TRAILERING ACROSS CONTINENTS
Corsair Marine trimarans are especially weight-conscious, and sit low on their trailers meaning they have excellent trailering characteristics. They are equally easy to launch, giving you more time on the water, and the ability to expore many more remote cruising grounds or participate in regattas far from home. Some Corsair trimaran models go from trailer to water in 25 minutes, and with practice even the largest boat models can be done in 40 minutes.

6 Best Trailerable Trimarans For Bluewater and Coastal Sailing
As an Amazon Associate, we earn from qualifying purchases. We may also earn commissions if you purchase products from other retailers after clicking on a link from our site.
Having a boat costs a lot of money, even when you are not using it, marina fees, etc. And once it is in the water most sailors never go very far from their “home marina” and sailing will be somewhat restricted. However, what if you could fold your trimaran and put it on a trailer, store it at your house, and go to a new sailing spot the next time?
Here are 6 of the best trailerable trimaran:
- The Dragonfly series
- Corsair Series
- Windrider 17
Choosing the best trailerable trimaran (a multi-hull with three “hulls”) will depend on crucial factors like speed, durability, design, and ease of transportation. This article is here to help you get started with your research and hopefully help you on the way towards your dream boat!
Table of Contents
Cruising Trimarans That Can Be Transported
Cruising boats are made for multiday sailing either on the coast of your favorite sailing area or full-out blue-water ocean crossings. Extended living should be a priority in these designs.
1. The Dragonfly 25 and 28 (Dragon Fly Series)
Dragonfly is in the business of making the “best foldable trimarans on the planet” many would agree with this statement. Dragonfly is known for its commitment to easy trailering and ease of use, shown in designs for the Dragonfly 25 and Dragonfly 28.
The “Swing Wing” system on the linchpins is one of the key features of the dragonfly series. The system’s application makes it possible for the trimaran to narrow its beam as much as 50%.
Attesting to its Scandinavian manufacturing, most parts of the trimaran are made in-house. This guarantees quality and ensures that all used parts are above standard.
You don’t need to look further than the Dragonfly 25. Its centerboard slightly offset to port. Extra space is created in the main hull’s interior with a trunk buried under a settee. Performance-wise, the low drag and narrow hull shape allow the boat to reach blistering speeds.
Dragonfly 28 In Numbers
- Length: 8.75m
- Beam folded: 2.54m
- Max crew: 5-7 people
- Max Speed: 22+knots
Dragonfly 25 In Numbers
- Length: 7.65m
- Beam folded: 2.30m
- Max crew: 4-6 people
- Max Speed: 21+knots
2. Farrier F-22
New Zealand enters the trimaran manufacturing race with this premium sea goer. The vessel comes in two different versions: a performance variation with more horsepower and a full cabin cruising version.
Compared to the dragon series the F-22 has the biggest allowance for space.
The F-22 is known for being one of the easiest trimarans to fold and load.
The sports version of the F-22 has some really good performance to offer. It has an aggressive spirit: you can mount a sail while leaving plenty of space for the boat’s fine entry and flared forward sections. The build quality is also topnotch—a lasting memorial to a principle that Ian Farrier always worked by: excellence.
Farrier F-22 In Numbers
- Length: 7.0m
- Beam folded: 2.5m
- Max crew: 3-5 people
- Max Speed: 20+knots
3. Corsair Series
This boat series has an exciting history. Farrier created it to promote his trailerable tri concept. However, the series is now independent with a top-class vehicle to its name.
The Corsair 760 is listed as providing some of the best performance and safety benefits to sailors.
Building off the spirit of excellence of the founder, the Corsair 760 has created a boat with comfort and racing potential. The boat can be tricky to handle at first, but it will be a breeze once you get the hang of it.
It is also worth noting that the corsair 37 is the largest trailerable trimaran on the market today.
Daysail Trimarans That Can Be Transported
Boats that are made for dayssailing are usually smaller, cheaper and more easily handled. They are perfect for those looking to enjoy a full day on the water in calm weather, but are usually less suitable for multiday events or rough sea sailing.
4. The Astus Models (20ft, 22.5ft, and 24ft)
If you’re looking for something small but still capable of doing day sailing, this 22.5-foot trimaran is for you. Built for speed and maneuverability, the Astus 22.5 has optional foils to optimize speed.
The modern design, coupled with the spacious interior, can fit up to four beds. Accordingly, this trimaran is suited for family outings.
The Astus brand specializes in transportable trimarans, worth noting is that some models need a specific trailer whilst the smaller boats use a standard trailer.
5. Weta 14.5
The 2019 Weta trimaran is a 14.5-foot (4.4-meter) trimaran featuring a carbon frame, centerboard, rudder foil, and rudder shock. The hull is made from fiberglass and foam. The Weta is built for strength and speed based on these lightweight materials.
The 2019 Weta trimaran is easy to sail and is worth considering whether you want to take a quiet sail, race with your friends, or take kids to a sailing lesson. It has a simple design and is easy to set up independently.
The small size makes it more suitable for daysailing in good weather rather than multiday cruising, although more experienced sailors will of course push the limits of this boat.
6. WindRider 17
The 17.4-foot (5.3-meter) WindRider 17 is one of the more versatile trimarans in the market. It packs high performance for a low cost. This trimaran has a light rotating mast to boost performance, and a full-battened mainsail optimizes visibility.
This sailboat is made from rotomolded polyethylene, which is more durable than fiberglass and demands less maintenance.
The WindRider 17 has a comfortable interior and can fit six adults. This is an ideal choice for social sailing for a couple or a family and friends. It’s easy to ride, and a shallow draft allows easy maneuverability.
What’s the Largest Trailerable Trimaran?
The largest trailerable trimaran is the Corsair 37 , this multihull is built for single-handed cruising while still maintaining the ability to comfortably seat 6 people.
The Corsair 37 provides comfort, speed, and safety. It also contains just enough space to accommodate amenities like a propane stove, a sink, and other equipment.
The vessel is designed to be a performance cruiser. It features an aluminum rotating wing mast, carbon fiber bowsprit, and premium deck hardware. The corsair can still cut through the water with ease despite its size, putting the wind in your sails.
What Is a Catamaran?
A catamaran is a boat with two hulls (a trimaran has three) connected by a bridge deck. Catamarans usually offer more space than both monohulls and trimarans of the same length. The catamaran is usually somewhat slower than a trimaran but faster than a monohull. They are usually made of fiberglass or carbon fiber.
Catamarans come in all shapes and sizes. You can find straightforward sailing catamarans, perfect for those who are only starting their sailing journey. Larger sailing catamarans have become extremely popular for long-distance sailing.
There are also power catamarans, they have huge diesel-powered engines (sometimes electric) and no sails. Also called “power cats”, these boats can reach 30+kts.
Can a Trimaran Be Trailerable?
As discussed above, some trimarans are possible to put on a trailer and move to another sailing area or to be stored at home. This is usually not possible with catamarans but is sometimes possible with the trimarans that are fitted with foldable amas (the two outer “floats” or “hulls”).
Some trimarans can be trailerable, this is mainly due to the ability to drastically decrease the vessels beam, sometimes as much as 50%. This allows the trailer plus trimaran to be below the legal requirements of the road.
Final Thoughts
It has proven difficult to beat the trimaran in terms of speed. Through the ages, this type of vessel has proven to be immensely enjoyable in all kinds of sailing activities. These can range from sea adventures to waterborne relaxation in your free time.
Trimarans come in various types, foldable, for cruising or racing, etc. However, there is a common factor: many of the small ones are trailerable. This makes them easier to move than most other types of boats.
