Captain works steady through four decades with one family

By Dorie Cox

The yacht that Capt. Larry Hastings works on is for sale. It has been home to him for more than half of his life.

Capt. Hastings is 75 years old. He set down his cigar, stopped sanding the yacht’s old nameplate and talked about his 43 years working for the same owners on M/Y Buckpasser.

“If new owners are smart, they would want to hire me,” Capt. Hastings said during a tour of the yacht. “But at my age, I can’t give them a long-term commitment.”

And he is used to long-term commitments. It was 1973 when Capt. Hastings started work on the owners’ first Buckpasser, a 98-foot Burger. Now he runs their 120-foot Jack Hargrave design built by Hitachi Zosen, and he knows both yachts like no one else.

Capt. Hastings is what many people envision when they think “old salt”. Decades of sun exposure has weathered his skin. Years of climbing ladders, lifting hatches and hoisting anchors keeps him lean and muscular.

“Don’t need to go to the gym, everything is manual,” he said as he pointed to the anchor chain.

Just like running this boat, most of what Capt. Hastings does is for the long haul. He and his wife have been married 52 years.

“Our deal was that she takes care of the homefront,” he said. “I was on boats and I said I’m not going to quit. That was our arrangement, so she raised our family of two boys and a girl.”

He’s comfortable with things staying the same. Even down to the dark hunter green-colored wall of the main salon.

“I’ve been living with that color for 40 years,” he said.

In an industry that often sees crew change jobs fairly frequently, Capt. Hastings is too busy doing his job to think about moving around. Plus, he really likes what he’s doing. He believes his common-sense ways of doing things have contributed to his longevity.

“If you’re right, you’re right; If you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” he said. When there was an issue onboard, he said all parties “just sat down to talk about it”.

He is serious about doing a good job.

“I may not be that smart, but I’m observative,” he said. “There’s not a nook or cranny on this boat that I can’t point right to.”

He keeps work as work and never mingles it with time off.

“I didn’t socialize with the owners and it worked great,” he said. “They never interfered, they let me run the boat.”

Operations onboard have mostly stayed the same for four decades. He prefers to measure fuel levels with a stick instead of a computer reading and he likes tried-and-true methods, especially when it comes to navigation.

“If you rely on GPS it can get you in trouble,” Capt. Hastings said as he pointed to decades-old equipment on the helm. “It can be off, and just a degree or two can set you off course.

“If you know the time-speed-distance equation, you can navigate,” he said, as he pulled several coffee-stained, pencil-marked paper charts out of a full cabinet and pointed to the courses of regular trips to the Bahamas.

Crew stick with the program

Longevity runs through the Buckpasser crew, also.

“I know some captains that stay on the job for 30 years, but not their crew,” Capt. Hastings said.

Stew Raymond Bottomley has worked onboard for 35 years, cook Glenn Brannock for 33 years and even their Bahamas guide, Kenny Gardner, has been a regular for 14 years.

Eng. Marshall Tolderlund, 67, has been with the crew for nearly 28 years. Tolderlund started after he was laid off from his job at a machine shop in the 1980s in Newport. A customer suggested he go to Spencer Boatyard in West Palm Beach and that was where Capt. Hastings offered him a job.

“I thought if it didn’t work, I would go back to the yard,” Tolderlund said by phone. “But I guess it stuck.”

He attributes his longevity to the captain and the crew.

“Larry wanted things done right, but he didn’t interfere,” Tolderlund said. “Everyone has their own opinions but he let you do your own thing. Everything was done and we did it right.

“We had five guys that really made it work together,” he said. “Of course, we had discrepancies, but keep your mouth shut and take a deep breath. You’re in a 121-foot aluminum box floating in the middle of nowhere. You get over it quick.”

Tolderlund met his wife, Amy, in the parts department at the yard in 1981 and they married in 1989.

“She is my first and last wife,” he said.

Even the newest member of the crew has been onboard for a longer run than most crew in yachting. From the enclosed aft deck, Mate Philip Upstill instinctively straightens cushions. It was in July, 16 years ago, on the same aft deck, under the same paint shed in Bradford Marine, that he was interviewed for his job on M/Y Buckpasser.

“I started that day and I’m still here,” Upstill said.

At 50 years old he said, “I’m the rookie of this crew.”

Upstill grew up sailing and worked on a sportfish boat in high school before embarking on a corporate career. But he took an opportunity to leave the office to get into the marine industry.

“I could live in a bathing suit,” Upstill said. “Can you imagine being in a cubicle for 20 years?”

He said working with Capt. Hastings doesn’t require superfluous words.

“With Larry, everything is clear cut,” Upstill said. “Just do your job and be respectful.”

Upstill said he has seen some crew come and go, about 15-20 deckhands.

“I advised crew to stay on, but on a boat like this, it’s the little things. Like if you leave a mess…,” he said. “Getting along with crew is the most important thing.”

Although Capt. Hastings respects how things have been run, he does aim to improve where he can.

“On the first boat, for 12 years, I wrote everything the crew said to fix in a spiral notebook,” Capt. Hastings said. When it was time for a new boat, he handed the book to the owner and said, “I am a boat captain, not an architect.”

Capt. Hastings hopes to stay onboard, but if the new owners bring their own captain, he’ll get by. The captain has taken a Buckpasser from Newfoundland to the Bahamas and down to Venezuela, including a 250-mile trip up the Orinoco River. At 10 knots.

“This goes, ‘boogety, boogety, boogety’, and burns 28 gallons an hour,” he said as he spun his hands to demonstrate. “It’s a slow boat.”

And Capt. Hastings will continue, slow and steady, just like Buckpasser.

Ogden Phipps, Racer of Horses, Dies at 93

By Joseph Durso

  • April 23, 2002

Ogden Phipps, the financier and sportsman who became the pillar of horse racing in New York in the middle years of the 20th century, died yesterday at a hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla. He was 93.

Mr. Phipps was the central figure in a family dynasty built on steel, investment banking and the breeding and racing of horses. He was the grandson of Henry Phipps, the partner of the steel magnate Andrew Carnegie; the son of Henry Carnegie Phipps and Gladys Livingston Mills Phipps (his mother owned the Wheatley Stable); and the father of Ogden Mills Phipps, known as Dinny, who succeeded him as chairman of the Jockey Club and master of the Phipps racing stable.

In the investment banking business, he rose to become a partner in Smith Barney, and from 1958 to 1978 he was chairman of the Bessemer Trust Company, the private bank that held the family fortune.

In the horse racing business, he became pre-eminent as the owner of numerous national champions, including Buckpasser, Personal Ensign, Easy Goer and Bold Ruler, the sire of Secretariat. As chairman of the Jockey Club for 10 years, he was the chief guardian of America's racing rules and bloodlines.

He was raised into a family of wealth and into the elegant life that ruled society early in the century. His grandfather used to lease an entire railway train to carry members of the family, their servants and pets to Palm Beach for the winter and back to Long Island in the spring. The family once owned 28 miles of Florida coastline between Miami and Palm Beach, as well as large tracts along Biscayne Boulevard and much of the city of Palm Beach itself. And several times the Phipps family was reported to have made large loans to the City of Miami during the Depression.

Yet on the toss of a coin, the family once lost the chance to become the owner of the greatest racehorse of his time. It was a sporting toss: Helen Tweedy was the owner of the mare Somethingroyal; Mrs. Phipps and her son, Ogden, owned the stallion Bold Ruler. They flipped a coin to see who would get the first foal of the mating. The first foal, who went to the Phippses, was a forgettable filly. The second, who went to Mrs. Tweedy, was a colt: Secretariat.

But the Phipps family was rarely short of horses that could run and win, nor of trainers who would make certain that they did, from Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons to Bill Winfrey to Shug McGaughey. And they reached peaks of performance, as they did in 1988, when they had 35 winners from 87 starts and earned $5.8 million in purses.

When the Eclipse Awards were voted that year, five of racing's highest honors went to members of the Phipps entourage: Easy Goer was named the nation's best 2-year-old colt; Personal Ensign, who finished her career undefeated, the outstanding filly or mare; McGaughey the top trainer; and Mr. Phipps both the outstanding owner and the outstanding breeder.

Most of the family's racing operations were directed from Barn 20 at Belmont Park, where the famous Phipps colors flew high: black with a cherry-red cap. But the family had been a powerful element in racing in North America and Europe for many years.

The family fortune resulted from the boyhood friendship in what is now Pittsburgh between Andrew Carnegie, the son of a Scottish immigrant weaver, and Henry Phipps, the son of a Scottish immigrant cobbler.

When the boys were in their 20's, Carnegie bought a piece of the Kloman steel forge and gave Henry Phipps half-interest for $800 and bookkeeping work. In time, the company became Carnegie Steel and then United States Steel, and when they sold the company to J. P. Morgan in 1901, Henry Phipps left with $50 million.

Henry Phipps devoted the rest of his life to philanthropy and managing the family fortune. According to his grandson, Ogden Mills Phipps, Henry Phipps created the first low-income public housing in New York City. The nonprofit Phipps Houses still owns and manages apartments in Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx, the grandson said.

The Bessemer Trust Company was founded in 1907 with the proceeds of the sale of United States Steel. For its first 68 years, Bessemer handled only the accounts of the descendants of Henry Phipps. In a 1995 study of Bessemer, The American Banker said that by 1975 the Phipps family assets in the company were worth $1 billion.

Ogden Phipps was born in New York on Nov. 26, 1908. He graduated from St. Paul's in New Hampshire and then Harvard in 1931. During World War II, he was a Navy officer, rising to the rank of commander.

He was raised in a sporting atmosphere half a century before off-track betting in New York transformed the nature of racing. His mother and father founded the Wheatley Stable and stud. His mother owned Bold Ruler, the stallion who became the dominant sire in the world for lines of racehorses distinguished for their speed.

Mr. Phipps excelled at golfing, boating and tennis and won the United States tennis championship seven times in the 1930's and 1940's and the British amateur title in 1949. He was inducted into the International Court Tennis Hall of Fame in 2001.

His first stakes victory as an owner came in 1936 when his homebred White Cockade won the Withers. The best thoroughbred he ever raced was probably Buckpasser, who won 25 of 31 starts and finished out of the money only once. In recent years, Mr. Phipps spent his winters living off Palm Beach on his yacht named Buckpasser.

In 1937 he married Lillian Bostwick, an equestrienne who also drove trotting horses. Her brother, Pete Bostwick, was an outstanding steeplechase jockey and polo player. Another brother, Dunbar, was her partner in owning trotters, and together they raced the legendary Noble Hanover.

Lillian Phipps died in 1987. Mr. Phipps is survived by two sons, Robert L. Phipps, of Ridgeland, S.C., and Ogden Mills Phipps, of Palm Beach; a daughter, Cynthia Phipps, of New York; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sonia Seherr-Thoss of Litchfield, Conn. Cynthia Phipps owns Saarland, a strong contender for the Kentucky Derby a week from Saturday.

Mr. Phipps's sentimental favorite was Personal Ensign, who won all 13 of her races. In 1988, after a seven-month layoff, she won five Grade I stakes in a row and outran the sprint champion Gulch in the Whitney. She defeated Winning Colors, the filly who had won the Kentucky Derby, in the Maskette Stakes at Belmont Park and again in an electrifying duel in the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Churchill Downs to complete her career with a perfect record.

Personal Ensign, apparently beaten in the homestretch by Winning Colors, suddenly spurted back into contention and won the duel by a short nose. It was, Mr. Phipps said later, ''a terrifying experience.''

In recounting Mr. Phipps's last years, Ogden Mills Phipps told The Associated Press yesterday: ''He loved the breeding side, the foals and the mares. He went every 10 days this winter to see his new crop of 2-year-olds. He got more excited by the breeding side the older he was.''

Passion for classic yachts

In today's hurried world, 'if it's broken, replace it' has become all too common a mantra. It seems we are obsessed with newer, bigger, faster. But perhaps we shouldn't be too quick to dismiss their rivals. After all, it's the older, slower, elegant ladies of the past that helped shape yachting's future.

'In the last 15 years, there's been so much attention directed towards scale the newest, biggest megayacht,' says Marty Sutter, owner of the 1973 33m Burger Ch anticleer a nd the 1930 33m Ted Geary-designed Ca nim.

'We will never be the biggest yacht in the harbour, we certainly will not be the most expensive, but virtually everywhere we go, we're the prettiest gal on the dance floor.

'We do it because we like these boats, but owners might take note that a better way to distinguish yourself isn't always bigger but more unique, more distinctive and certainly classic. And I think the owners of the classic boats who do maintain them well totally get that.'

While aesthetics and romanticism might be a common thread, yacht owners' motivations for undertaking a significant classic restoration project are surprisingly varied

Passionate owners like Sutter have answered a classic calling, choosing to dedicate considerable time, money and effort towards restoring the magnificent craft of yesteryear. To them, the joy of restoring, maintaining and cruising these timeless beauties is worth more than the convenience of a new amenity-packed superyacht.

If anyone understands these owners, it would be Jim Moores, founder of restoration and refit specialist yards Moores Marine, Inc. and owner of the 1947 18.5m Trumpy Aurora II . Moores has completed more than 100 classic refits.

'The main reason is dreams people dream of a quieter, less complicated time,' says Moores, 'And it's the beauty of these boatsI own a Trumpy, and it's like a work of art. Many who designed these pre-war vessels were artists first and boatbuilders second.'

While aesthetics and romanticism might be a common thread, yacht owners' motivations for undertaking a significant classic restoration project are surprisingly varied, as you will see in the following pages.

'You could tell she had good bones, good structure and a fabulous spirit' Paul Nerger, co-owner, Washingtonian

Chanticleer

For some owners, history is paramount. 'There's classic and then there's historic, and the history is what catches our fancy,' says Marty Sutter, whose 33m Burger Chanticleer _was built for Ogden Phipps, the man who famously lost _Secretariat in a coin toss. Phipps renamed Secretariat Buckpasser , after one of his most famous horses. 'The irony is that in 1973 when this boat was launched, Secretariat [the horse] won the Triple Crown,' Sutter says.

But the real historic value for Sutter and wife Lisa is a more recent owner, American songstress and avid yachtswoman Frances Langford Evinrude, known for the song I'm in the Mood for Love.

'When [Frances] owned the boat, she was in her eighties, and when an eighty year-old woman buys a boat herself, she can do whatever she wants to it and the boat was very pink!' Sutter says.

The Sutters weren't strangers to interior overhauls; they refitted the 1930 Canim without any interior photos, modelling her after other yachts from the era, most notably Delphine . They continued this classic look on Chanticleer, updating it with 1970s style and distinctive rosewood soles.

'We want to maintain these boats as if they were maintained by their original owners in the spirit and the vision they had,' says Sutter, who is humbled by the idea of being a 'steward of history,' a caretaker of historical yachts for future generations.

'The reason people own classic yachts it's passion, first of all, and you have to have a willingness and commitment level to be a proper custodian.'

If anyone proves classic yachts are not intended merely to be admired, it's Matt Brooks, the new owner of the 1929 sailing yacht Dorade. This winsome 16m yawl has a famous pedigree, known as the boat that launched designer Olin Stephens' career and for having won the Transatlantic, Fastnet and Bermuda races.

'_Dorade_ was designed to sail fast across the ocean,' says Brooks. 'In the last five decades, the only racing she's done has been in buoy races that don't really play to her strengths. We wanted to bring her back to a point where she can do what she does best.

'Unlike a fine piece of antique furniture, classic wooden boats were designed to swim in the ocean, and frankly, I don't think you can fully appreciate their beauty without seeing and experiencing them in that context.'

Dorade has kept up an active racing schedule since her 2011 refit. She took first place in her class at Les Voiles de Saint Barth, St. Maarten Heineken Regatta and the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta during the 2012 Caribbean racing season.

Her refit included a new mast, winches, hatches, engine, rudder and sails and new joinery below. Brooks has owned modern yachts, but he always dreamed of having a classic.

'They are boats you can fall in love with. They are elegant, their lines are beautiful, they are the stuff of dreams. Once you own a classic and you want to sail it, you're in the business of refitting,' Brooks says. 'We understand that we are really just caretakers and custodians of an extraordinary piece of sailing history, and we take that very seriously.'

Marty Sutter notes the challenge of finding like-minded owners who share this passion. 'Our fear is losing part of American history by not having enough people or institutions willing to preserve these boats,' he says. 'Can you imagine if in 100 years from now there wasn't a Pacemaker, a Huckins, a Rybovich sportfish or a Trumpy in existence?'

Yet the recent commissioning of modern vintage yachts, such as the Burger Sycara IV and Johnny Depp's Vajoliroja, is encouraging for Sutter.

'It's magnificent,' he says. 'They aren't classic, historic boats, but it will inspire people.'

Huckins Yacht owner Cindy Purcell (granddaughter of Frank Huckins) believes now is the time for classic yachts: 'Years ago, a style would fade out, another would come in, but now you can get sleek, modern, fast, classic it's all accepted.'

In the end, those who are drawn to a classic refit agree it's a singular experience. 'There's an accomplishment to it,' Moores says. 'Someone who enjoys bringing something back, making it work and enjoys it for what it truly is will take pleasure in restoring classic boats

Having a project is what attracted do-it-yourselfer Bob Meierhoff to take on the refit of the 1958 23m Burger Diane.

'I like finding used, old stuff and fixing it up,' he says. 'In my business, I go to auctions and find old equipment, and my employees shudder every time.'

When Meierhoff purchased the Jack Hargrave-designed Diane in 1992, she wasn't in great shape. An initial haul-out and pressure wash revealed significant rust damage. 'You could see right through the hull; the only thing that had been keeping her afloat was the paint!' he says.

Diane had a third of her hull replaced, but kept her original engines.

Jackson Marine Center in Fort Lauderdale completed the extensive refit work including the cabinetry and painting but Meierhoff takes every chance he can to tinker with Diane.

'I work on the wiring and the engine, and I come down for every hurricane,' he says. 'I'm not too much into the [steward of history] thing I just like to build stuff.'

This modest owner later found he had a connection with Diane's creators. When the boat was built, Meierhoff's classmate was Skip Gunnell, son of Marjorie Burger Gunnell and Elias Gunnell of the Burger Boat Company.

Skip didn't get to see Diane's transformation before he passed away. But at 91 years old, Marjorie visited, which Meierhoff says has been one of his most enjoyable experiences in completing the refit.

As the hull was in good shape, Lynch and his wife, Linda, concentrated their efforts on the dated interior. They also spent close to a million dollars updating electrical and mechanical systems. Lynch combined modern technology with erstwhile style, such as hiding high-definition TVs behind 1920s paintings. All of the furnishings except one piece, Lynch laments are authentic 1920s and '30s.

They also rebuilt the wheelhouse and brought back the original name_ Innisfail_ (pronounced 'fall'), an ancient name for Ireland.

In _Innisfail's _70-year journey from private yacht to WWII anti-submarine boat to government vessel to charter yacht, she has welcomed US presidents including Kennedy, Nixon and Clinton, celebrities such as Jackie Gleason and Sammy Davis Jr and has graced the silver screen many times over.

Tom Gerrard's desire for far-flung cruising inspired him to refit his classic Burger, the 1980 21m Taittinger.

'I never got into the fibreglass thing,' Gerrard says. 'I wanted something reliable, something I could travel great distances on. As I continued on the boat, I warmed to the old classic style.'

Taittinger has proven her sea kindliness, cruising down to South America and up to Newfoundland. Many updates were made specifically to make long-haul cruising more comfortable.

'We put in a stabilization system, retrofitted for this boat, which made a big difference,' Gerrard says. 'We also put an Atlas Marine Systems shore power converter; you never know what voltage you're going to get when you get to the dock.'

The interior refit changed out the shag carpeting, added wood panelling in the salon and converted back a stateroom that the previous owners had made into a walk-in closet.

But Taittinger still has its original refrigerator simply because they couldn't get it out without moving walls.

'We've bought all the parts we can find for it!' Gerrard ensures.

The sweetest driver and the most amazing relaxing time. We didn't have to worry about anything. Really throughly enjoyed our time. We drove to San Francisco to a wedding, my aunts and uncles are older and it's hard for them to see in long drives outside of our city. This was a treat! It was around 30+ of us. Super friendly customer service, everything was easy and smooth. The bus was clean as a whistle and we were able to play our own music. Bluetooth connected, waters and a TV! We brought our own snacks and a little bit of wine, we had a blast.

We rented a party bus for my husband and I's 30th and it was incredible! Mark was awesome and made sure we all got there and back safely, and we got sooo many compliments from our friends that came. Plenty of space, super clean ride and overall just a great time! Definitely recommend!

Mark was a great help and made sure the day went smoothly for us. I would recommend him and his services. Thank you!

I had my senior ball on 5/5 and Mark was amazing! I found him on yelp and had messaged him starting from February because I knew how crazy prom season would be. I copied part of the message he sent me for the quote I asked for: "The following land yacht is available for your 6 hour (5:45p-11:45p) event on the date you've requested.  30-36 passenger - $1,695.00 Our prices INCLUDE ALL FEES AND CHAUFFEUR'S GRATUITY, as well as complimentary ice and bottled water." I had 32 people on my bus and we all had enough space! The water was definitely awesome for the end of the night but Mark was so responsible and got us to SF city hall on time and safely. He was so quick at replying to my messages and I have had looked into many other places and this was the most accommodating and reasonably priced. Highly recommend !!

Our group had an amazing time! Mark arrived on time to pick us up and the bus was clean and spacious. The bathroom on board was an added plus. The pricing is very favorable to other companies and the bus has everything you need. I wish I had taken pictures of the interior because the other photos on here don't do it justice. There's also a TV that you can stream to. We ended up extending our reservation an hour because we didn't want it to end. We will definitely be using Mark again in the future.

First class experience from pickup, journey, to drop off. Our chauffeur Kelvin provided us with a safe and wonderful experience to make for a good time. Will definitely be hiring this company for future corporate events and celebrations. Keep up your good work. Thank you.

I had my 40th birthday bash and Mark was amazing. Bus was very clean and roomy with a bathroom which was a plus. Hands down, book with Pacific Land Yachts if you are looking for a party bus. Would definitely do business again!

I rented a bus for my brothers 30th birthday and it was an unforgettable night! The bus was in great condition and so much bigger than I imagined. It even had a restroom which was helpful because we had it reserved for 5 hours. The driver was fantastic and let us blast our music and dance the whole time. I would highly recommend this company to anyone looking for a good time!!

Mark is pretty darn awesome! We chartered his land yacht for a work event. Everyone had an amazing time, and everyone said that they would definitely want to work with Mark again for both future and personal events that require group transportation. FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY!

Great driver. Smooth sailing for a large group of 30+! Very nice clean bus (with a bathroom!!) We had such a great time. I can't wait to do it again.
