Down East Yacht Club

On Saturday, Sept. 9, the Down East Yacht Club gathered at Blake’s Boatyard in Boothbay Harbor. On this lovely afternoon over 200 boaters enjoyed two hours on dry land to take pleasure in the social festivities that make our club the “Fun Club.”

From 1500-1700 hours, friends enjoyed stories, jokes, laughter, camaraderie, delicious food provided by Lisa Hallinan Catering and plentiful drink courtesy of the “Woody Wagon.”

Testaments to their loyalty to the Down East Yacht Club, 15 of our 25 active past commodores were greeted with an appreciative and admiring applause. The presence of John Barsomian, Joe Blake, Shirley Geoffrion, Amy Goodwin, George Hamilton, Bob Marshall, Bob McCarthy, Tim Parker, Dave Quist, Win Russell Jr. Cy Seifert, Woody Thompson, Bob Wheeler, Dick Wood and Sandy Young added ceremony, cheer and merriment to the party.

Incoming Commodore Susan Pope introduced the new bridge: Vice Commodore Steve Arkley, Rear Commodore Dennis Hopkins, Treasurer Ron Richardson; and new members of the Board of Directors, Melanie Hodgdon, Ed Lawton, Ted Graff and Dave Yetman. Commodore Susan Pope urged all members to communicate openly with members of the Bridge and Board of Directors. And as is common practice of the club, new members since the last DEYC meeting were introduced and presented with DEYC burgees. Alan and Suzanne Rugh and Kelly and Teri Tsongalis were welcomed with a warm applause.

The calendar of events for the upcoming year promises another “Fun Year!” Fleet Captain Ron Richardson promised members that next year’s “Cruise” would be one of the best ever! Members were reminded of the upcoming monthly off-season gatherings held at members’ private homes both in Maine and Florida.

Commodore Susan Pope asked all for a moment to keep everyone in the path of Hurricane Irma in our prayers.

The friendly family atmosphere was once again evident as many members helped in the clean-up effort following last call.

Yacht Racing, in the form of Points Series, takes place on Saturday afternoons and Wednesday evenings during the sailing season which runs from May to September. Sailing Instructions and Points racing courses are provided for cruiser handicap racing (NHC), Leisure 17, Wayfarer, Topper, and dinghy handicap (PYS) racing. Refreshments are available after racing from the bar.

The racing results are usually available on this web site within a few days of the race and can also be emailed to competing crews. From time to time the Club hosts events for both cruisers and dinghies. In 2014 the Club hosted the GP14 Worlds Championships on Strangford Lough with over 100 dinghies competing.
