The Exumas Yacht Charters
Boasting a glittering chain of over 365 islands, cays and islets, this sun-kissed archipelago is a major draw card for Hollywood A-listers and the SuperyachtSet who regularly flock to the Exumas to enjoy their idyllic splendour, crystal-clear shallow waters and laid-back Bahamian lifestyle.
Yacht charters around this region are spoiled for choice, with an array of paradisiacal islands and islets to choose from. Swathes of silken soft sands make for the perfect stop-off opportunity for a beach barbeque, while the clear turquoise waters teeming with every variety of tropical flora and fauna act as a siren call to snorkelers and scuba divers alike.
The islands also boast the protected Exumas Land and Sea Park, which incorporates a number of beautiful islets and cays to explore.
Yacht charter itineraries in the Exumas
With its central location and welcoming marina, Staniel Cay is the perfect starting point to kick off your Exumas yacht charter. The island is privately owned, however the marina is public, and a convenient place for the crew to stock up on charter supplies. We also recommend a visit to the Thunderball Grotto , an underwater cave populated by colourful fish that featured in the eponymous James Bond film, and has proved a veritable haven for intrepid divers ever since.
Afterwards, the choice is really up to you. Some highlights of this beautiful region include shark feeding in Compass Cay , where families of nurse sharks are so tame even the children can conquer their fear of these much-maligned predators. Also, Shroud Cay , located at the mouth of the Exumas Land and Sea Park, is renowned for its abundance of wildlife and indiginous flora and fauna, including myriad birds, crawfish (lobsters) and sea turtles.
The Exumas can also be incorporated into longer yacht charter vacations which set out from the Bahamian capital of Nassau . It is also a short hop across the sea to the much-loved island of Eleuthera , well-known for its pink sand beaches and line-up of fantastic restaurants and stylish nightspots, making the Exumas a convenient embarkation point for a number of popular Bahamas yacht charter itineraries.

Chartering in the Exuma, a Destination for Every Season
You can rent a yacht in the Exumas any month of the year, although many seek out the warm weather in the Exumas during the winter. December, January, and February are peak charter months, especially around Christmas and New Year’s. Yet, late spring and early summer too are also favorite times for an Exuma yacht charter.
The Exumas are blessed with amazing weather and ideal cruising conditions throughout the year. Across all seasons, temperatures remain in the mid-70s to mid-80s, with steady trade winds and mellow seas. Thanks to a moderate tidal range, just 3.5 feet, the waters of the Exumas are calm and typically hover around 80 degrees year-round.
Yacht Charters in the Exumas – Things to Do & See
There are many things to explore, experience, and see while on your luxury boat rental in the Exumas. Here we listed some of our favorites.
Visit the Swimming Pigs at Big Major
The world-famous swimming pigs that call the beaches of Big Major Cay home are world-famous. Any yacht charter to the Exumas wouldn’t be complete without a swim with these cuddly potbellies.
Snorkel the Thunderball Grotto
These underwater caves located near Staniel Cay were made famous by the James Bond film. Explore the vast cave network on an afternoon snorkel trip. The underwater caves are teeming with Angelfish and many other colorful species.
Swim with Nurse Sharks at Compass Cay
The private island of Compass Cay is home to a population of resident nurse sharks . Visit the cay and take a dip with the sharks. They’ll swim right up next to you, and you can even listen to their squeaks underwater. (Yes, they squeak!)
Visit Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park
This massive natural park is one of the best in the Bahamas, and it’s a must-visit outdoor playground on an Exumas charter. Snorkel, sea kayak, hike, and bike your way through the reefs, uninhabited islands, and trails of the park. The park offers the best snorkeling in all of the Exumas.
Snorkel the Sunken Plane at Norman’s Cay
Located just off the beach in Norman’s Cay, you’ll find a small single-engine plane, perfectly protected under the water. Snorkel, kayak or take a tender cruise to this must-see sight (which is believed to be a smuggling plane).
Feed the Iguanas at Allen’s Cay
The beach-dwelling iguanas of Allen’s Cay are a sight to see. Feed them by hand right at the water’s edge, and be sure to bring your camera!
Relax on Tropic of Cancer Beach
This hidden white-sand beach is located on Little Exuma and it’s hands-down one of the most gorgeous in the region. But another reason to visit: The Tropic of Cancer cuts a line right down the middle of it.
Try a Variety of Water Sports
The Exumas are known for their strikingly aquamarine waters, and on your crewed yacht charter, you’ll want to spend as much time in these inviting waters as possible. Sea kayaking, snorkeling, cliff diving, jet-skiing, and windsurfing are all favorite Exumas pastimes.
Sailing from Nassau to Exuma
The 365 islands of the Exumas extend south for nearly 100 miles, yet, the most northern islands are just a short 3-to 4-hour sail from Nassau Harbour. For many, sailing from Nassau to Exuma is the ultimate luxury adventure.
Nassau to Exuma yacht charters allow guests to see all of the incredible sights throughout the region – from Thunderball Grotto (made famous in James Bond) to the stunning beaches of Shroud Cay. You choose what you’d like to see and do: Plan snorkeling excursions, explore sapphire lagoons on paddleboards, swim, and play in the Exumas’ legendary warm waters. There is so much to do and see. Plus, you’ll be cruising in supreme comfort, with chef-prepared meals and five-star service.
Design a Nassau to Exuma itinerary that lets you see and do it all. We offer a range of options: From 7-day Nassau to Great Exuma charters, to Nassau-to-Nassau trips in the Exumas. A range of luxury yachts are available for hire from Nassau.

Indigenous rock iguanas make the beach at Allen’s Cay an unmissable stop for nature lovers aboard your superyacht charter in the Bahamas. Your Exumas yacht charter crew can prepare fruit on the end of sticks for you to feed the curious creatures. Atlantis Paradise
Return to the Marina at Atlantis Paradise Island, where you can shop for souvenirs, take the kids for a few more rides down the waterslides or place one last wager at the gaming tables. Otherwise, relax onboard your superyacht charter around Atlantis Paradise Island with a Caribbean-themed buffet breakfast before heading to the airport for your flight home.

Exploring boating from a renter's perspective
Yacht Rental Destination: Exuma Cays, Bahamas
From pigs, to plane wrecks, to white sand beaches and turquoise water, Bahamas’ Exuma Cays are packed with wonders of all sorts with one exception: it is not packed with people. Best accessed by private boat, how easy is it to stake out your own private beach or anchorage?
We bareboat chartered a Leopard 433pc Power Catamaran from The Moorings during Spring Break to explore this chain of small islands South of Nassau in the Bahamas called the Exuma Cays (pronounced ‘keys’). We learned a lot about the yacht, the cruising area, and seamanship. Over the next few weeks, we’ll dive into more details in each of these areas to help you determine if a trip like this is right for you.
What’s Hot
- Charter base is very accessible from the US, especially the East Coast.
- The clearest water in the world combine with shallow waters make for incredible beaches, snorkeling, and views.
- Very few people, tourist or otherwise.
- Locals are very welcoming to tourists.
What’s Not
- 30 mile open water journey from Nassau requires experience and can be rough.
- Marinas, restaurants, and other services are few and far between.
- Shallow water and lack of infrastructure require confidence in anchoring and navigating.
Things to do on a Yacht or Boat Rental in the Exuma Cays
On our weeklong bareboat charter in the Exuma Cays, we stuck to a roughly 40 mile stretch of the Northern Exumas with Highbourne Cay to the north and Staniel Cay to the south. The charter companies recommend weeklong charters focus on this area to keep the boats clos(er) to services if something goes wrong, and to balance sea time with island time. This stretch of the Exuma Cays also has a high density of the top attractions.
Feed the Famous Bahamas Swimming Pigs at Big Major Cay
Known to many as ‘Pig Island’ or ‘Pig Beach’, and made known to the world when it was featured on Season 20 of the Bachelor in 2016. Big Major Cay hosts a drift of domestic pigs that have, like many Bahamians, adapted to a life in the tourism trade. Bring your boat to the beach, and as the pigs see you coming in, they’ll swim out looking for a treat. It really is one of the cutest things I’ve ever seen.
Read our guide to Swimming With the Exumas Pigs in The Bahamas to learn more.
The Exuma Cays host a plethora of reefs filled with beautiful coral and fish. Several caves offer an incredible snorkeling experience, with the most well-known being Thunderball Grotto. This cave, filled with coral and tropical fish, is romantically lit by sunlight from holes in the cap above. It has served as the set for several iconic move scenes, including James Bond’s Thunderball.
The shallow, clear water in the Exuma Cays means that wrecks can be easily seen from the surface with a snorkel mask. A famous plane wreck lies near the runway off Norman’s Cay , where, during the 1970s and 1980s, Carlos Lehder established a staging area to import as much as 80% of the US’ annual cocaine supply.
Relax on Your Own Private Beach
It was unbelievable how quiet and peaceful the Exumas were, even during the hustle and bustle of Spring Break. There were several days where we had an anchorage, beach, or tidal pond all to ourselves…and we weren’t even trying.
Even well documented attractions really weren’t that crowded. Pig Beach had maybe a dozen or so other people when we arrived, and as people came and went, there were moments in which we almost had it to ourselves. Aside from the bar at Staniel Cay Yacht Club, this was the biggest crowd we saw all week.
Nurse sharks are very common in the Exumas Cays. You’ll likely see them here and there when running in your dinghy. Some of the marinas here also chum the water to create an attraction. We were told at the Highbourne Cay marina that a bull shark was part of the party, so nobody was going into the water here. However, at Compass Cay, we heard that people will go into the water to swim with them.
We also saw what we think was a lemon shark while snorkeling at Warderick Wells. For what its worth, shark attacks are more likely to occur in murky waters…the opposite of the conditions you’ll enjoy in the Exumas.
Conditions in the Exuma Cays
The Exuma Cays present a number of obstacles that require a confident crew with a reasonable amount of cruising experience. However, many rewards await the crew that is ready to take on the challenge.
The Exuma Cays form a string of islands running from North to South, protecting hundreds of square miles of shallow water (less than 20 feet at low tide) from trade winds to create a unique cruising ground on the chain’s West side. Because the islands are very low, you’ll still regularly see wind in the teens or more, but the water is much calmer than on the deeper East side of the islands.
There are several challenges to navigating a bareboat charter in the Exuma Cays.
Line of sight navigation is challenging because, with 25 miles of ocean between Nassau and the island chain, you’ll spend some time out of sight of land. Then, once you get to the islands, their low profile and lack of infrastructure (water and radio towers) mean there are few landmarks that can be referenced back to your charts to determine where you are. Much of this is overcome with modern GPS chartplotters; just make sure you have a backup in case your primary fails.
In addition to leaving land behind the horizon, the conditions can be rough and exhausting in the waters between Nassau and the islands. On the way out you’ll likely be pounding against waves with 20 knot (23 mph) wind in your face. On the way back, you’ll have a following sea pushing your stern from side to side.
Another, perhaps more challenging, obstacle comes from the [lack of] water depth. You need to be very careful when navigating near the islands, monitoring charts, your depth sounder, as well as the water itself with a clear understanding of the current state of the tides and the draft of your boat. There is an ever-present danger of hitting coral heads that are not always marked in charts. Read more about that here .
Finally, the relationship of the East and West side of the islands, which exchange wind and current between the gaps in the islands, in areas called ‘cuts’ can also cause trouble. Get too much exposure to a cut in the right wind or tidal state, and you’ll be in for a rough ride. You need to be acutely aware of any potential exposure to the cuts, or the weather coming from the East side of the islands when choosing an anchorage each night.
Docks and mooring balls are not too common in the Exuma Cays. While it is possible to avoid anchoring overnight with a little planning and luck, you should come prepared to anchor at least a few nights.
The shallow, clear, water makes for the beautiful, varying blue, hues as it varies in depth and the bottom shifts from white sand, to coral, to grass. We found that the sandy bottoms, clear water, and winds that (mostly) come from the east make for easy anchoring: we came to the Exumas having never spent the night at anchor, but came home having spent every night there anchored. Every time we dropped the anchor, it set firmly and quickly. The clear shallow water made it easy to visually confirm that the anchor was set by swimming out with goggles for a quick look.
Most of the time, the winds were strong and consistent enough to keep the boat from swinging in the changing tides so that the anchor remained set as we intended. Once the wind shifted and pulled the anchor around, but the soft sand helped it to reset on its own.
One of several ‘code brown’ moments of the trip was when we discovered, around 2am, that we dragged our anchor several hundred yards out of the anchorage into a chart depth of 1.5 feet. Fortunately, there were no boats behind us and we caught it while the tide was in, so we didn’t hit anything or run aground. In hindsight, we probably didn’t let out enough anchor line when we set it at low tide, then the rising tide lifted the anchor while the 30+mph winds pulled us away. That was the only instance in which our yacht’s anchor did not give us everything we needed of it…although, our dinghy anchor is a story for another day.
Provisioning in Nassau is a chore in itself . However, it’s important to get everything you need for your voyage before leaving. Between Nassau and Great Exuma, there are only two islands with fuel and provisions…and the provisions are sparse and expensive.
While the tides are critically important when anchoring, they also impact your ability to experience certain activities in the Exumas.
- Snorkeling is best done at slack tide when the water is calm; it’s also easier to get close to the coolest stuff at low tide when there’s three to four feet less water between you and the bottom of the sea.
- Taking your dinghy into a tidal creek should be done while the tide is rising to assure safe passage in both directions.
- Sandbars are exposed at low tide.
- Crossing cuts into thee Exuma Sound is usually easiest when the winds and tides are matched.
Since the winds can be strong, and sometimes shift to the North or South, and heavy rains can be hard to predict, it is also very important to keep a close eye on the weather forecast at least daily.
Yacht Rental Options in the Exuma Cays
Charter a yacht.
We chose to explore the Exuma Cays on a ‘ bareboat ‘ charter from Nassau. This means we rented our own private boat to be our home in the islands for the week and were responsible for skippering (running the boat), provisioning (food), and fuel. All of our articles on the Exuma Cays will discuss the region from this perspective.
If you are new to the concept of bareboat chartering, you can read more about my experience bareboating in the British Virgin Islands and consider getting a formal certification from the American Sailing Association . If you are uncomfortable taking responsibility of a yacht on your own, or just don’t want to do all the work yourself, you can hire a skipper through the charter company to operate the boat for you.
Moorings / Sunsail and Dream Yacht Charters / Navtours offer crewed and bareboat charter yachts from Palm Cay Marina in Nassau to take to the Exuma Cays. Dream Yacht Charters / Navtours also has a base in George Town in Great Exuma so that they can offer one way charters.
The options here include power catamarans, sailing catamarans and sailing monohulls ranging in length from about 40 feet to 55 feet. The boats here tend to be on the larger side of what you’ll see at other bareboat destinations. Moorings/Sunsail only rents catamarans because they have less draft (not as deep in the water) than monohulls. Apparently, a number of renters run aground in the shallow water, and the shallower draft catamarans reduce that risk.
Much much larger yachts are available for crewed charter from other companies. Some are over 250 feet.
Take a Day Boat Tour from Nassau or Great Exuma
Fast, shallow draft, center console boats, such as Sugar Adventures on Great Exuma and Shore Thing Escapes in Nassau offer day trips to the Exuma Cays if you are vacationing on one of the larger islands. With a boat like this, you can get out and see the highlights of the area in a single day. Most operators offer a few packages, or custom tours, depending on what you want to see. Since these boats are fast and open, you can have a rough, wet, windy ride, depending on the weather. Especially when coming from Nassau.
Stay in the Islands and Rent a Day Boat
There are several small resorts throughout the Exumas that offer a good jumping off point to explore the islands by day. This option offers more comfort and requires less planning (and responsibility) than chartering your own yacht, but still allows for great access to the islands. Depending on the resort, you can rent your own center console for the day, or take a guided tour. MacDuffs Cottages on Normans Cay , Staniel Cay Yacht Club , Highbourne Cay Resort , and Compass Cay Resort all offer lodging and either have day boats for rent or can arrange tours.
Fly in for the Day
If you really want to make a quick trip to the pigs, you can buy tour packages like this one that include a flight from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to Staniel Cay in The Bahamas.
Like the Caribbean, high seasons tends to be in the Winter and early Spring when the weather favors boaters with consistent winds, dryer weather, and a lack of hurricanes. Unlike many parts of the Caribbean, though, you’ll find that ‘crowded’ is very relative. While we were there during Spring Break, Nassau was a total mob scene, but in the Exumas there was plenty of room to spread out in every anchorage we explored to carve out a quiet spot to park your private island. We never had a problem getting into a restaurant or a fuel dock.
Getting to your Exuma Cays Yacht Rental in the Bahamas
Nassau (NAS) and George Town (GGT) in Great Exuma both offer daily flights from the US East Coast. Nassau is a much larger airport with more flight options. The best options for multi-day yacht charters leave from Nassau. The best options for day boat rentals and tours leave from George Town.
If you are staying in the out islands, you’ll need to arrange transportation. Norman’s Cay and Staniel Cay both have airports that can accommodate small planes from South Florida, Nassau, or Great Exuma, as well as private jets. Highbourne, and a few other resorts can be accessed by sea plane.

We made notes of the highlights of our journey through the Exuma cays to help you plan your own trip. These notes are take you on a journey from North to South, starting in Nassau, to the north end of the island chain, through the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park, and finally ending at Staniel Cay in the central Exumas.

Climber823443 ON TRIPADVISOR
We rented a boat from Island Exclusive Rentals for the week. Communication was great and with it being our first time in Exuma they were very helpful with information and suggestions. The boat was delivered to our house as promised and was in great condition. Being able to keep the boat for the entire week instead of a one-day rental gave us the flexibility to see so much more and was the highlight of our vacation. I can't wait to return and I wouldn't rent from anyone else.
Charles M IMPECCABLE!
We used Island Exclusive around July 4th 2021 for a single-day tour of the Exumas chain; we also rented two boats for self-operated use for the rest of the week. I can't speak highly enough of Island Exclusive Boat Rentals. The boats were in great shape, the crew was kind and attentive, and Leah's service was extraordinary. I wish I could give them six stars, they were that good.
BRUCE B AMAZING SERVICE & FUN
The only place we could locate that would allow overnight rental at our dock. They brought the boat, and picked it up. Service was prompt and everyone was genuine and friendly. We got four full days and felt no pressure to start late or end early. The boat was fantastic, well maintained and clean. Great for 6 adults to travel all around Exuma and the area Cay's and isles. If you need a boat rental, this is a fantastic choice.
The Exuma Expert AMAZING BOAT RENTAL!
We had an AMAZING time renting this gorgeous little thing from Island Exclusive Boat Rentals. We called the day before, and Leah and her team were so professional, responsive, helpful, and just made us feel very confident using them for the first time. The boat was clean, and we ABSOLUTELY LOVED the Bluetooth system that they have installed...didn't even need to bring our speakers. We'd definitely rent from them again, and recommend them 100 times over! Can't wait for the next time!
Jeff R BEST BAHAMA BOAT EXPERIENCE
Island Exclusive Rentals was a great experience. In the years of boating in the Exumas this was our best experience. The boat was clean, in great shape, full of fuel and in top shape. Elvis and Leah dropped the boat off right on time and the whole reservation and rental process was quick and easy. By far our best experience in the Exumas. I highly recommend them!

Plan Your Activities in the Exuma Islands
There is so much to see and do in the Exuma Islands. Just a few activities include:
- Scuba diving and snorkeling
- You can try swimming with pigs. Major Cay is famous for its resident pigs. These adorable animals will enthusiastically greet you and look for any tasty treats you may have brought them. (Fruits and vegetables, please.)
- Exploring the Exuma Cays Land & Sea Park .
Enjoy Gourmet Cuisine from Your Private Chef
Relaxing is hard work. With that said, you’ll undoubtedly need to fortify yourself with good food and drink. Fortunately, your private chef will carefully prepare all meals to suit your preferences. You can sit back, relax, and enjoy.
For some, drinks are as important as food. Your yacht charter will have beer, wine, liquor, soda, coffee, tea, juice, and water. Be sure to fill out your preference form carefully and list any specific beverages you’d like to have onboard.
Moreover, vegan travelers, gluten-free eaters, and anyone who needs special dietary attention can also expect fantastic cuisine. Special diets are no problem! Private chefs understand different requirements so everyone can enjoy their holiday meals together.
Relax and Enjoy Your Island Time
You could spend months, years, or a lifetime getting to know the Exuma Islands. However, with only a week or two to spend at this fantastic destination, you’ll want to adjust quickly to the slow pace of life. Get in an island state of mind by:
- Being present and focusing on your surroundings. If possible, unplug from technology for at least a little while.
- Breathing in the fresh sea air.
- Appreciating the time you get to spend with family and friends.
- Sleeping late. Enjoy your comfortable suite as long as you want to, then savor your breakfast on the deck.
How to Spend a Week on an Exuma Boat Rental
Our final advice would be to make your last night in the Exuma Islands unforgettable. Have a few tropical drinks (the captain is driving). Talk about your days of snorkeling, kayaking, exploring tiny beaches, and swimming with local pigs.
If you are one of the many people who can’t get enough of these charming islands, don’t worry. You can book another Exuma boat rental as soon as you return home.

A significant part of the archipelago belongs to Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, which is among the largest national parks in the world. The location of the Exumas
The Exumas are an archipelago consisting of over 365 islands. The largest one is Great Exuma with a length of app. 60 kilometres; it is connected directly to Little Exuma, another smaller island of the island chain. Its capital is George Town. The entire archipelago is 209 kilometres long and has a territory of almost 190 square miles. The Tropic of Cancer passes through right here, specifically on Little Exuma. The southernmost island is Great Exuma, while the northernmost one is Ship Channel Cay. The latter is located only 50 kilometres from Nassau. Florida, Atlanta, Toronto and Nassau all offer flights to Exuma International Airport, located in George Town. The boat trip from the northern islands of Exuma to Nassau is app. 60 minutes long.

Boat rental in Exumas – the main ports
We can find several great moorings and anchorages on the shores of Exuma, as well as some nice yacht marinas. We can explore the entire archipelago thanks to the fact that most of the islands are surrounded by suitable anchorages. You will find a list of the best ones below.
George Town
George Town can be found in the central-western part of Great Exuma. We can anchor practically anywhere around the town, as the area is well-protected. There are great anchorages in the centre, at Kidd’s Cove, and a little more to the south behind Crab Cay, at Red Shanks. There is a large port that belongs to Exuma Market in the centre; from here we can easily get to the central shops. They have a fuel station nearby that we can use. There are several yacht marinas in the area, for instance, February Point Marina and Marina Village Crab Cay. All of these marinas are relatively small and family-friendly. Exuma Cay Yacht Club can be found in the southern part of town. Here we can get fuel, access electricity, replenish our water and ice supplies, and they have shower cabins as well. There are also many restaurants and groceries in town.
Great Guana Cay
Great Guana Cay is located in the centre of the Exumas. It has two great anchorages: Black Point and Little Bay. Black Point is a true gem with a nice port and several moorings. People are very friendly and casual, and they find it important to help sailors in any way they can. Little Bay is a small bay at the southern end of Black Point. The sea bottom is sandy, making it ideal for securing our boat safely. The depth of water is app. 3-4 metres. There is a beautiful beach here, but there are no establishments, ports or shops.
Little Farmer’s Cay
The island of Little Farmer’s Cay, located between Great Guana Cay and Great Farmer’s Cay, is less developed. Its port, Little Harbour is well-protected and has great anchorages. We can anchor at the mooring buoys in the area between the northern corner of the island and Great Guana Cay. Farmer’s Cay Yacht Club is also located here. It is a small yacht marina where we can get fuel, water, ice and access to electricity. There is also a bar and a restaurant here. We can find other anchorages in the area as well, but these belong to other businesses. Unfortunately, they are not marked properly, so we might not know who owns them. During high tide, the depth of water is 4 metres.
Norman’s Cay
Norman’s Cay is one of the most fascinating islands of the Exumas, as the area is surrounded by an ancient coral reef. The conditions are suitable for all kinds of waterfront activities, but the place is also perfect for a relaxing afternoon. The remains of drug lord Carlos Lehder’s plane lie beneath the sea. It is a classic diving spot, as the plane is still intact, providing a home for tropical fish and corals. We can anchor at several parts of the island. Boats that are well-suited to strong waves may use the area between Battery Point and Norman’s Cut. As for vessels with a smaller draft, they can anchor near Boot Cay. We can find other anchorages on the southeastern side between the dock and the plane wreck. The area is well-protected against winds, and the depth of water is around 2 metres.
Staniel Cay
Staniel Cay is among the most favourable destinations of the sailors in the Exumas. Thunderball Grotto can be found on this island – the place got its name from a 1965 James Bond movie which was shot here. The island has an amazing yacht marina called Staniel Cay Yacht Club. They can accommodate 18 boats, and they provide fuel, access to electricity, water and ice. The depth of water is between 2 and 3 metres. There are other anchorages in the area near Sampson Cay. This sandbank can be found the app. 5 kilometres further; we have the opportunity to safely anchor on the shallow waters.
Compass Cay
Compass Cay also belongs to Exumas Cays Land and Sea Park. There is a meandering mangrove river passing through the island, at the end of which we can find Rachel’s Bubble Bath. This unique “pool” is fed by the ocean – the flowing water crashes against the coral reef, which practically makes the pool a natural jacuzzi. The yacht marina of the island is quite stranded, with only basic amenities. We can also anchor a bit farther outside, but the area can only be used for a fee. There is another shelter in the southern direction with great anchorages. It is a very quiet and peaceful spot, but they can only accommodate 10 boats altogether.
Highbourne Cay
Highbourne Cay is a small, private island between Nassau and Eleuthera. It’s a popular stop for boaters heading to Nassau. We can get water, ice fuel, food and all the essential supplies we need here. Its harbour is beautiful, well maintained and protected. If we visit the Exumas, we will get to know several sides of maritime life there. All sailors will find something exciting on these parts, including wonderful places to visit. The amazing ports and marvellous beaches make this diverse chain of islands a major destination among sailors.
The main sights to see around Exuma
The Exumas are mostly famous for the wonderful beaches. Still, there are a lot of other sights to see that are definitely worth visiting, too. Thunderball Grotto – one of the most frequently visited diving spots in the Bahamas – is located near Staniel Cay. We can also sail to Big Major Cay where we can meet the famous Bahamian swimming pigs. On Allen Cay, we can get an insight of the life of a giant family of iguanas. We will find the centre of Exuma Sea and Land Park on Waderick Wells Cay where we can observe the colourful wildlife of the Bahamas.
If we fancy a nice walk in town, we can go to George Town. Besides the authentic shops and the market, this is also where the largest sailing contest of the region takes place. The archipelago is very diverse, and has dozens of exciting sights and activities to offer – it is definitely worth getting to know this place!
Gastronomy of Exumas
The cuisine of Exuma is very similar to that of the Bahamas; in fact, it is a variant of the latter. The most popular dishes are prepared with frutti di mare, and we can taste fresh local fruits as well as fruity refreshers as well. We will find a large variety of fish on the menus such as barracuda, perch, jack crevalle or snapper. They also serve shellfish and lobster. There is a very unique place on Great Exuma where we can try the most authentic dishes of the Exumas for a fair price: Fish Fry in George Town. It consists of several smaller restaurants serving the most delicious dishes of the island. They have an extensive menu, and locals love the place just as much as tourists. If we can, we should definitely pay a visit!
Beaches in Exumas
Tropic of cancer beach.
Tropic of Cancer Beach – officially called Pelican Beach – is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Exumas. It can be found on Little Exuma near Williams Town. We will see a small shack at the entrance, from where there is a short flight of stairs with the sign “Tropic of Cancer Beach”, leading to the beach. We can admire the unspoiled white sand and the dazzling blue sea here while enjoying the relaxing solitude. The marvellous beach also offers a great opportunity to go scuba-diving, which will be a wonderful experience on these parts.
Forbes Hill Beach
Forbes Hill Beach is located at the end of the bridge connecting Little Exuma to Great Exuma. The crescent-shaped shoreline is a breathtaking sight and is among the most spectacular shore segments in the region. We can admire all the tones of blue here. One side is surrounded by limestone formations towering above the surface, with the gentle waves of the turquoise ocean lapping the beach. The other side offers a picturesque beach with a wonderful view in each direction. It is a quiet and gorgeous area where we can explore mysterious rock formations, relax on the soft sand or play around in the rolling waves of the ocean.
Coco Plum Beach
Coco Plum Beach is located in the northern part of Great Exuma. The beach is a true gem of the archipelago. We can go walking on the sandbar appearing during high tide or look for the treasures of the ocean. The beach is full of beautiful pastel-coloured conches, starfish and unique sand dollars. It is a favourable diving spot, and we can also try kiteboarding, which is becoming more and more popular these days.
Three Sister Beach
Three Sisters Beach is another beautiful beach on Great Exuma. The beach can be found 20 kilometres from George Town; it has astonishing blue waters and is covered by clean sand. There is an amazing view of the rock formation called Three Sisters from the beach.
Stocking Island Beach
Elizabeth Harbour, located on Great Exuma, is a few kilometres away from Stocking Island where we can choose from several amazing beaches. Stocking Island Beach is among the most beautiful beaches in the Bahamas. The blue holes, coral reefs and underwater caves make the surrounding waters even more unique. It is a very exciting spot for beach-goers, snorkellers and divers as well.

Which period is best to sail in Exumas?
Exuma has a subtropical climate, characterised by moderate warm weather during the entire year. The average annual temperature is 28° Celsius; this means 21° Celsius in the winter and 27° Celsius in the summer. The temperature rarely drops below 16° Celsius or above 32° Celsius. The dominant wind blows from the northeast in the winter and from the southeast in the summer, freshening up the air a bit. The velocity of the wind is an average of 15 km/h during the entire year. Most of the precipitation falls in the summer months. At the end of the summer – during the period between June and November – tropical cyclones (hurricanes) may be a threat.
The strong wind (with a blast of over 90 km/h) and the seawater that rises, as a result, may cause heavy damage. The weather is usually pleasant in Exuma during the whole year, meaning that sailing is also enjoyable in all seasons. We should definitely avoid the hurricane season though, as storms may be very challenging
The climate diagrams are based on 30 years of hourly weather model simulations. They give good indications of typical climate patterns and expected conditions (temperature, precipitation, sunshine, and wind). The “mean daily maximum” (solid red line) shows the maximum temperature of an average day for every month for Exumas. Likewise, the “mean daily minimum” (solid blue line) shows the average minimum temperature.
The wind rose for Exumas shows how many hours per year the wind blows from the indicated direction. The diagram for Exumas shows the days per month, during which the wind reaches a certain speed.

What Choose
Sailing boat or Catamaran, what to sail in Exuma Islands
Choosing the right vessel for your sailing journey in the Exuma Islands can greatly impact your experience. Yachting.Rent offers an extensive selection of sailing boats and catamarans, ensuring you can choose the perfect vessel for your adventure. Here’s an overview to help you decide between a sailing boat and a catamaran for your Exuma Islands trip.
Sailing boats have been the traditional choice for many due to their classic charm and the romance associated with sailing. They offer a more authentic and intimate connection with the sea, providing a sense of oneness with nature that is hard to match. Sailing boats are also often considered more fun to navigate, especially for experienced sailors who enjoy the challenge and thrill of mastering the elements. With Yachting.Rent, you can rent from an assortment of sailing boats, each equipped with modern amenities to ensure comfort and convenience during your journey.
On the other hand, catamarans are renowned for their stability, spaciousness, and comfort. With two hulls, catamarans provide a steady sailing experience, reducing seasickness and making them an excellent choice for families or those who prefer smoother navigation. The wide decks and spacious cabins offer more room for relaxation and socializing, perfect for larger groups or for those who value comfort and space. Additionally, their shallow draft makes them ideal for exploring the smaller cays and hidden beaches of the Exuma Islands.
In conclusion, the choice between a sailing boat and a catamaran largely depends on your personal preferences, the nature of your trip, and the level of comfort and adventure you seek. Whether you are a seasoned sailor looking for the thrill of a sailing boat or prefer the stability and space of a catamaran, Yachting.Rent can accommodate your needs. We are dedicated to ensuring that your sailing adventure in the Exuma Islands is not only unforgettable but also tailored perfectly to your expectations.

Compliance status
We firmly believe that the internet should be available and accessible to anyone, and are committed to providing a website that is accessible to the widest possible audience, regardless of circumstance and ability.
To fulfill this, we aim to adhere as strictly as possible to the World Wide Web Consortium’s (W3C) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1 (WCAG 2.1) at the AA level. These guidelines explain how to make web content accessible to people with a wide array of disabilities. Complying with those guidelines helps us ensure that the website is accessible to all people: blind people, people with motor impairments, visual impairment, cognitive disabilities, and more.
This website utilizes various technologies that are meant to make it as accessible as possible at all times. We utilize an accessibility interface that allows persons with specific disabilities to adjust the website’s UI (user interface) and design it to their personal needs.
Additionally, the website utilizes an AI-based application that runs in the background and optimizes its accessibility level constantly. This application remediates the website’s HTML, adapts Its functionality and behavior for screen-readers used by the blind users, and for keyboard functions used by individuals with motor impairments.
If you’ve found a malfunction or have ideas for improvement, we’ll be happy to hear from you. You can reach out to the website’s operators by using the following email
Screen-reader and keyboard navigation
Our website implements the ARIA attributes (Accessible Rich Internet Applications) technique, alongside various different behavioral changes, to ensure blind users visiting with screen-readers are able to read, comprehend, and enjoy the website’s functions. As soon as a user with a screen-reader enters your site, they immediately receive a prompt to enter the Screen-Reader Profile so they can browse and operate your site effectively. Here’s how our website covers some of the most important screen-reader requirements, alongside console screenshots of code examples:
Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website.
These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.
Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
Disability profiles supported in our website
- Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
- Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
- Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
- ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
- Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
- Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments
- Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
- Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
- Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
- Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
- Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
- Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
- Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.
Browser and assistive technology compatibility
We aim to support the widest array of browsers and assistive technologies as possible, so our users can choose the best fitting tools for them, with as few limitations as possible. Therefore, we have worked very hard to be able to support all major systems that comprise over 95% of the user market share including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera and Microsoft Edge, JAWS and NVDA (screen readers), both for Windows and for MAC users.
Notes, comments, and feedback
Despite our very best efforts to allow anybody to adjust the website to their needs, there may still be pages or sections that are not fully accessible, are in the process of becoming accessible, or are lacking an adequate technological solution to make them accessible. Still, we are continually improving our accessibility, adding, updating and improving its options and features, and developing and adopting new technologies. All this is meant to reach the optimal level of accessibility, following technological advancements. For any assistance, please reach out to

Lake county news-sun | additional charges filed against chain o’ lakes boat rental company owner.
Additional charges have been lodged against the owner of a Chain O’ Lakes boat rental company who was arrested last year after she threw a customer’s phone into the water during a dispute, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
Kristen Wooden of the Antioch area was arrested Friday after police obtained a warrant charging her with forgery and several counts of theft, police said.
Police said the new charges against her stemmed from investigations that began following her arrest in July 2023 at her business, The Boatyard in Antioch. Wooden was arrested after she allegedly took a cellphone from a rental customer who was using it to record Wooden and threw it into the water, authorities said.
The new charges allege that Wooden forged the name of an inspector on a 2023 state application for her boat rental license. Police also allege that Wooden illegally charged customers extra for rentals, tacking on charges for alleged damage and, in one case, charging customers because they had parked extra cars at her business.
The Fox Waterway Agency suspended Wooden’s commercial watercraft privileges at the end of last summer for violations and non-compliance with agency rules, police said.
