San Juan 38 Overview

Introduced in 2000, the San Juan 38 is a top-tier runabout with an impressive mix of cutting-edge styling, state-of-the-art construction, and luxury-class accommodations. Her foam-cored hull is vacuum-bagged, and the use of Kevlar in the construction process greatly increases strength and impact resistance. The heart of the San Juan 38 is her semi-enclosed pilothouse with its 360-degree visibility, convertible dinette, and elegant teak helm station. Port and starboard sun pads, extending aft into the cockpit, lift to provide excellent service access to the engines. Belowdecks, the San Juan’s interior is richly appointed with varnished teak cabinetry and a teak-and-holly sole.  The arched doorways are notable, as are the quality fabrics and hardware. Additional features include a transom seat, bow thruster, custom drop curtain, wet bar, and teak exterior trim. A light boat for her size, Yanmar 350hp diesel inboards cruise the San Juan 38 in the mid 20s and reach a top speed of close to 30 knots.

The demand for high quality “lobster boat” styled motor yachts in the 36 to 44 foot range has prompted us to design and build our San Juan 38. The San Juan 38 combines lobster boat styling with state of the art design, engineering and composite construction to handle the rugged, no-nonsense environment of any ocean or waterway. Working with Gregory C. Marshall Naval Architects, we have designed a hull, which provides comfort and sea keeping in difficult sea conditions yet allows for higher speed cruising in calm to moderate sea conditions.

At 40'7” L.O.A. x 12'2” Beam with 38'0” L.O.D., our San Juan 38 offers a premium level of interior space in a highly functional interior/exterior layout. Our standard used in building our interiors offers unmatched care and craftsmanship. This standard includes fit and finish of joinery and systems, which is normally only available in the mega-yacht market.

A selection of optional items and systems offer the customer the ability to customize and personalize the San Juan 38 to meet their specific needs. 

Performance for the San Juan 38 includes a cruise speed in the mid 20 knot range made possible by its lightweight resin-infused composite structure and Yanmar 6LYA-STE turbocharged diesel engines.

The San Juan 38 has been designed to be extremely maneuverable with engines located for balance and stability. It will spin and maneuver in its own length with intuitive ease using our standard Mathers electronic controls. Maneuvering is further simplified with the addition of an optional bow thruster. 

The San Juan 38 is built in the USA using the American Bureau of Shipping Rules as guidelines. Machinery and equipment are installed using the rules and regulations of the United States Coast Guard and the American Boat and Yacht Council as guidelines.

The result is a safe, high performance, personal motor yacht for the boat owner looking for fit, finish and attention to detail.

The interior is trimmed with teak and finished to a satin sheen. The hull sides forward and in the aft stateroom are sheathed with teak “ceiling” strips. The galley and forward cabin sole is teak with holly splines. Countertops are surfaced with a Solid Surfacing material such as Corian® with teak rails. The aft stateroom provide sleeping for two in a queen size berth aft. The aft stateroom has a hanging locker and teak raisedpanel louvered doors for privacy and ventilation. The aft stateroom has a screened opening port light for ventilation. The forward stateroom has a screened Lewmar Low Profile 40 overhead hatch for ventilation. Berth cushions/mattresses are 5” foam composites with a wide variety of fabrics available for berth upholstery. Overheads are Majelite or equal with teak trim supports. An optional Webasto thermo 90 heating system is available for cabin and pilothouse heating.

The head with separate shower is designed to be easily cleaned and maintained. A Sealand Traveler head is connected to a holding tank with shore side pump out fitting on deck. A Sealand discharge pump is provided for overboard use where allowed. The holding tank is sounded with a Tank Tender gauge. A stainless steel sink is supplied with hot and cold water. The separate shower with seat drains to a sump and is discharged via a Flojet drain pump. A mirror and lockers with shelves are provided. The head has an opening portlight with a screen.

The San Juan 38 hull has been designed and computer modeled to be both handsomely styled and capable in a broad range of sea conditions. The traditional flared bow with fine entry and tumble home aft is complemented by the hydro-dynamically efficient underbody. Tooling for the entire boat was modeled and cut by a computer controlled 5-axis router creating the most fair and precise parts available in the industry today. The San Juan 38 hull is formed using a Kevlar®/E-glass and Corecell(R) foam core composite infused with epoxy vinylester resin. Dupont Kevlar®/E-glass hybrid is used to greatly increase the strength of the hull against damage caused by impact. The infusion process yields strong lightweight parts with high glass to resin ratios. The core is removed and replaced with solid glass and extra laminations in areas of major penetrations and high stress. Four watertight structural bulkheads separate the hull into damage control zones with dedicated bilge pumps. Structural bulkheads are built using Corecell(8) foam core with E-glass skins infused with epoxy vinylester resin. Longitudinal and transverse stringers are an E-glass Corecell(8) foam core composite. The entire structure of the boat is built using wood free composites.

The deck is a one piece infused composite molding using E-glass and Corecell(8) with epoxy vinylester resin. The hull is joined to the deck using an engineered flanged box joint and is bonded using a high strength adhesive with mechanical fasteners. This provides a permanent, watertight hull/deck joint.

COCKPIT AND DECK

The large cockpit was designed to allow ample room for sitting, dining, fishing and Sunbathing. An opening transom door with a removable stainless steel handrail is offered as an option. The built-in transom seat provides underside storage for the propane bottle, optional hot and cold cockpit shower and gear, and will accommodate an optional built-in Force 10 barbecue. Storage bins are removable to provide additional storage space below in the lazarette. Bins may be set up as bait lockers as an option for fishing. Sitting and Sunbathing space is also available on the port and starboard engine compartment boxes with hatches that lift with the aid of lifting cylinders for engine access. Transom seat and engine compartment hatches are supplied with non-skid surfaces. The cockpit deck is molded using non-skid with 1” waterways. Optional teak decking is available in the cockpit, pilothouse and on the composite swim step. A flush hatch in the deck provides easy access to the engines and optional generator. Port and Starboard cockpit bulwark lockers allow for storage offenders and mooring lines and will accommodate up to a nine-foot roll-up inflatable tender and it’s outboard. A teak boarding ladder is Supplied to assist movement on and off the boat.  Teak toe-rails and stainless steel half-round guards are fastened through the hull and deck flange. Six polished stainless steel deck cleats are provided for bow, stern, and spring lines along with custom stainless steel bow chocks and chafe guards amidships. A stainless steel deck fuel fill is located starboard side amidships. The water tank fill and holding tank dump are located on the starboard side forward. The foredeck anchor handling system consists of a stainless steel bow roller with a 22 lb. stainless steel “Bruce type” anchor and 20 feet of galvanized chain spliced to 200 feet of 9/16” nylon rope. A Muir anchor windlass is standard. A Lewmar Low Profile 40 deck hatch is located over the forward stateroom. Four opening stainless steel portlights with screens provide ventilation to the cabin area. A teak flagpole with stainless steel socket is supplied aft with a stainless steel flagpole supplied forward at the bow.

The pilothouse is built of an E-glass, Corecell(8), resin infused composite providing a stiff, strong, lightweight structure with sound and vibration dampening qualities. The starboard helm seat provides seating for two with access to the storage space below via a “gull wing” hatch. Aft of the helm seat is the bar area with counter, bar sink and teak storage cabinet beneath. An optional beverage fridge or icemaker is available as an alternate to the cabinet. The portside settee with varnished teak table provides seating for four with panoramic views. The table lowers to provide a third double berth, which allows for covered on-deck sleeping. An optional large retractable composite sunroof in the pilothouse results in all-weather versatility. The pilothouse helm station provides for a complete array of electronics and instruments, and offers 360-degree visibility.

2001 San Juan 38 SNAX  is a superb example of the San Juan 38 series, offering a rare combination of handsome lines, exceptional performance and very high quality standards. She has been meticulously maintained by her owner and has seen light use.

Accommodations.

Sleeps four in two private staterooms, plus two on the bridgedeck. There is a full galley and private head/shower. The interior is satin varnished teak with gloss teak and holly cabin soles.

Master Cabin:

The master cabin aft features a full double berth with hanging locker and bureau front.

The galley is amidships to port, featuring generous storage and counter space.

A private head with separate shower stall is located to starboard opposite the galley. There is a vacu-flush toilet and Surell countertops with stainless steel sink.

Guest Cabin:

A second guest cabin is located forward featuring a V-berth arrangement. This area was customized to provide a seat with additional drawers.

To port is a dinette/lounge area with raised seats and a varnished teak table with chart drawer that can be lowered to provide a double berth. Opposite to starboard is a fully equipped helm station with bench seat, a wet bar with refrigerator and storage space behind helm. Beautiful teak joinerwork throughout finished with gloss varnish. There is an electric sliding sun roof with rear enclosures including a screen door. All cushions are Spinneyback leather.

Hull & Deck

The hull and deck were formed using Kevlar (hull only), E-glass and Corecell foam core composite vacuum infused with epoxy vinylester resin to yield a strong lightweight structure with high glass to resin ratio. The core is removed and replaced with solid glass and extra laminations in areas of major penetrations and high stress. Watertight structural bulkheads separate the hull into separate zones with dedicated bilge pumps. Structural bulkheads are built using Corecell foam core with E-glass skins infused with epoxy vinylester resin. There is a composite swim platform with teak inlay and molded rubrail with stainless striker.

Hull is Sterling Flag Blue with gold cove stripe, double white boot top, and red bottom. Deck is Sterling off-white with light tan non-skid. Cockpit and pilothouse sole are all laid teak decking.
