The San Juan 24

A fast quarter-tonner that can still compete in phrf, but numerous problems with construction quality would steer us elsewhere..

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the Clark Boat Co. jumped on the trailer sailer bandwagon, and became a successful player in this decade-long market. Earlier, Bob and Carol Clark built Lightnings and ThistIes, and later, with the business in the hands of their son Don, the company built boats as large as 34 feet. The last boats came out of the shop in 1986, the year the company went out of business.

While the San Juan 21 trailer sailer really established the Clark Boat Co., it was the more performance-oriented boats such as the San Juan 24 and 7.7 that gave it the reputation of a successful builder of faster, under-3D-foot boats.

San Juan 21 Review

  • Add to quote

This is a review for a 1976 San Juan 21 Mark II. I bought my boat 4 years ago and had a hard time finding reviews for it at the time, so I am just returning my bit of info into the intertubes for others to find. I won’t be monitoring this post reliably. The SJ21 is a “good old boat” in that the maker is no longer around, but many of these were produced and they are not especially hard to come by. There is still a solid following of these boats and there are several racing classes out there still active. I contribute and use the SJ21 forums and they are a great resource which is attractive if you are a new boat owner in that you can get support if needed. This wasn’t my first boat, but it was my first boat of this size and complexity, so the forums have been invaluable. Mine is a Mark II, distinguished from the Mark I by the fact that coach roof and the deck are all at one level continuous to the edge of the boat. The Mark I has a more traditional look with a raised coach roof, though presumably less interior space. There are Mark IIIs that look the same as the II, but I am unsure of what differences exist. Mine was built in 1976 is a mid-lifecycle example. San Juans are moderately well built compared to some other cheaply made boats, though I am sure there are higher quality boats made. The fiberglass is relatively thick and the construction feels durable. The deck and transom have balsa cores which, like all cored hulls, can be a problem if not properly maintained. This is not unique to the SJ21, it is a generally accepted build practice to add strength to the deck by sandwiching a ¾ inch piece of wood between two skins of fiberglass. When bolts or other hardware are put through this sandwich, water will eventually creep in if not properly handled and rot out the inner wood. More on this later. It is a light boat compared to many of its competitors which make it quick in light airs. The reason it is light is that the keel is only about 400 lbs. It is a retractable keel that swings up into a raised trunk inside of the cabin. When fully retracted, the boat only draws about 12 inches of water, allowing it to beach easily. This aspect is great for my use as it makes shore stops effortless. It also means you don’t need to keep a dingy or tender onboard, assuming you live where sandy shores are the norm. The retractable keel also makes running aground a non-issue as you can just crank up the keel. If you are gunkholing and already have the keel up and you run aground, just step out and push it off. There are downsides to the light keel as well though. This boat is very tender. I primarily cruise and day sail with my boat. The best days sailing to me include steady wind where we make solid progress without having to mind the tiller constantly. I started on small boats and know how to handle them, but sometimes you just want to drink your beer and not actively sail. Certainly there are days that this happens, but a heavier keeled boat would be more stable in heavy or confused wind. I didn’t realize now much difference some weight makes until I had my parents onboard recently on a pretty windy day. These winds would normally have me turning upwind and minding the mainsheet in gusts, but the extra weight allowed the boat to take gusts without healing excessively. I assume this is what a heavier keel would do. Conversely, if you are new to sailing and want to learn to sail competitively I think the tender nature is a good thing as it will teach you to sail better and more efficiently. The cockpit on the Mark II is reasonably spacious and one of the reasons I liked this boat. The Mark I has even more cockpit and less cabin space which might be attractive if you primarily day sail. I can fit my wife and two kids on board with no problem, though 4 adults are too much. My son (11) and I have ample room to maneuver; he even lays down to sleep regularly. The mainsheet is on the floor at the stern of the cockpit when traditionally rigged. I have tried other rigs, but like the factory mainsheet rig best. I have re-rigged my boat to lead all the lines to the cockpit. This is not uncommon and a nice upgrade when done well, but the quality can vary and it means more holes in the deck for potential leakage if not done properly. There are no safety stanchions on this boat and going forward in moderate seas can be a bit harrowing. Even with lines led aft, this seems inevitable. There is a lazarette in the back of the boat for storing gas, anchors, etc. It is sealed off from the rest of the cabin so you can store semi-noxious materials there without concern. The original transom has a built in motor mount though many replace them with retracting mounts. The standard mount requires a long shaft outboard, which I have and works great. Many racers use a 2 horse motor, but I have a 2-stroke 4 horse Yamaha that is awesome and I wouldn’t want any less engine on the back. In my experience, when you need an engine, it is always better to have a little extra umpf and the 4 horse is plenty. The cabin on an SJ21 is moderately cramped. If you are coming off a sunfish, it will feel like a palace and in general when I got this boat it felt huge compared to my previous boats. However, humans are fickle beings and now it feels small at times. There are two coffin berths where the majority of your body is under the cockpit seats while lying down. These double as the general seats when below. There is no standing headroom. The keel trunk sticks up in the middle of the cabin and you pay for the convenience of shallow water depth by this intrusion. This limits cabin floor and storage space as well since you must have containers that can fit between the trunk and bunk if you want to store supplies for a cruise. There is a compression post and a forward v-berth with a forward hatch above for ventilation and pulling sails down. Two boxes are built into the hull, one for a house battery and one just for general storage. Under the v-berth is also a shallow storage area. The floor of the cabin is the bottom of the boat and there is no false bottom. In turn there is no plug for draining water which was new to me. Thus when water finds its way in, you must bail and sponge it out. Water will get into the boat through the keel trunk depending on the waves, wind and the last time you replaced the keel gasket on the bottom of the boat. Not a lot of water, but it happens. There is a basic electrical system that consists of cabin lights, accessories and running lights. Most boats will have neglected this and it will need repair/replacement if you intend to cruise. Racers won’t need any of this. The battery box is slanted at the same angle as the side of the boat and makes securing the battery a chore. Re-wiring the boat is not complicated though I guess it depends on your electronics skills. In general, this boat should be considered a competent daysailor with the potential for overnight excursions. I sailed my family of four to Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout on the NC coast, sleeping overnight at Shackleford. We all fit, but the wife has since declared she has no interest in doing it again. Me and the boy have done a 2 night trip to the coast since and loved it. Just think of it as car-camping in a hard topped, spacious tent and you will be happy. If you want to hang out below in a yacht, you will be disappointed. The other important aspect of the keel set up is trailerability. The boat sits very low on the trailer, below the roof line of my Toyota Highlander. It is light and thus doesn’t require a real truck to pull (see Toyota Highlander). We have a reasonably steep ramp at my marina and I have never had a problem with my front wheel drive 4-cylinder. It also tows well as a result of its low profile. Putting in and taking out is easy since you do not have to have a deep water ramp and no tongue extension is required for this boat. I have never had a boat with the keel trunk on the bottom as many of the SJ21 peers have, but hitting the slot on the trailer seems like it would be tough compared to the ease with which the SJ slides on. I believe time spent sailing is directly related to how easy a boat is to set up, particularly a sailboat. Therefore, I leave mine on a trailer at a marina with the mast up at a local lake. If I had to set up the mast every time I wanted to sail, or to deal with a significant keel that make loading and unloading a problem, I would sail less. This boat is easy to hook up and drop in if you leave it with mast up. It takes me 30minutes from pulling up to my boat, to pulling sails up after having parked the car and motored away from the dock. My trailering set up allows me to sail often on a local lake, but I can also strike the mast and set her up for a 2-hour coastal haul if needed. I can easily put up and take down the mast now that I have practice and I use the jib down haul I installed a brake. Once mastered, you can have her ready to ride in about 30 mins and another 30 mins to set her back up. Keeping it at my house or off site storage would quickly sap my interest (not to mention the waiting family) in day sailing unless I devoted the whole day. Parts are no problem with this boat as there is still an active aftermarket and most parts have found modern replacements by major manufacturers. I have completely restored my boat from stem to stern by myself in my garage, including new paint, hardware and running/standing rigging. The boat is exactly 21 feet and I have been able to shoe horn it into two different garages for the winter on a homemade lift. I successfully dropped and re-fit the keel by myself as well. Working on any boat of this size is a lot of work and not for those with a passing fancy, but the SJ21 does not pose any specific challenges. When looking for a SJ 21 to buy, much of the advice used for other boats applies. That said, the cored deck and transom to me is the most critical. Don’t trust the guy selling. Have him pull the lower gudgeon to see if he has properly sealed it, or if there is water intrusion in the transom. Make your purchase contingent on drilling several small holes from inside the cabin up into the deck, but not penetrating the deck to check on the core. White wood is good, dry brown wood is okay, wet or soggy mush is a potential deal breaker. I wouldn’t personally buy one with more than a third of the deck containing any moisture. Sure you can re-core the deck, but it will cost you much more than finding a better boat. Thankfully my deck was in great shape despite my ignorance, but I had to completely rebuild my transom (it sucked). Sails are expensive. I am still using the original sails that came from the manufacturer and wish I had haggled down the price more as a result. They work, but are tired. Check out all the hardware, is it original? If so, it should probably be replaced and is a bad sign for core issues if the owner has never re-bedded them. In general I think the SJ 21 is somewhat unique in its class. There are an abundance of 21 foot pocket cruisers, but only a few other large scale manufactured boats offer the flush keel in this length. It does well in races in light airs, but is pretty tender in heavier air. I think it is a great boat to step into from dinghies given the easy of trailerability and the ability to overnight. Just do your homework and don’t buy a deck re-core project unless you know what you are doing! Cheers, Kuriti

Excellent first boat. Good for daysailing on protected waters, or longer cruises for hardy souls in reliable conditions. The SJ21 came in two versions: a doghouse coachroof (Mk1) or a flush deck (Mks 2&3). The former has a longer cockpit (seats 5) but small interior; the latter has a shorter cockpit but more space below. Sitting headroom, barely; not much stowage. Keel winch awkwardly located in the V-berth. The SJ21 sails like a big dinghy & is best treated that way. Its sailplan is balanced, with slight lee helm in low winds and slight weather helm above 18 kts or 20 degrees of heel. The boat generally rounds up if overdriven. It prefers winds between 6-15kts and has a narrow groove of 10-15 degrees of heel. It moves well in light air. The flat bottom and swept keel mean the boat points only so-so. It is very quick from a close reach to a deep reach but gets a little loose in a following swell. It is not overly prone to broaching, and indeed the SJ21 has no glaring vices at all. The SJ21 sails brilliantly on main or reefed main only, and we have survived 50 kts that way on flat water. Its bluff bows make it slam a bit to windward and struggle in chop. With the keel up, the boat floats in 8" of water and is easy to launch and, at ~2000# on the trailer, a small vehicle can tow it. Build quality is so-so. Most common problems are wet balsa in decks and transom; leaking portlights; and wobbly keel pivot bolts. It is a simple boat to maintain and inexpensive to own. Typically sells for $2000-3000 USD. Look for upgrades like backstay adjuster, improved mainsheet system, braking keel winch, larger stern cleats, and rebedded deck hardware with proper backing plates. If sailing qualities are more important than interior space or foul-weather hardiness, the SJ21 is a good choice. Click to expand...

Hey Diarmuid! I didn't realize that review was yours. I read it long ago and always remember the line about heeling as my son is climbing the gunnel in a gust. I thought a review on the SJ21 forum would be viewed as biased, so just pitching in my 2 cents for anyone else. Basically, I didn't want to work yesterday morning....

Great info!! I have been sailing my MII for five years now. Her name is NAUJA, I refurbished her myself. I sail her on Lake Erie and I am considering the loop next year or so. Thank you for this article!

SanJuan 21 ~ Fleet 28

Glenmore Sailing Club ~ Calgary, AB, Canada

san juan sailboat

The SanJuan 21

The SanJuan 21 sailboat is a one-design trailerable sailboat with a swing keel, typically raced with a crew of three.

These sailboats are inexpensive and fun. Competitive racing boats may cost around $5,000. Eventually skippers want new sails… and with a new suit of sails costing a couple grand they are the biggest cost of boat ownership. However that suit of sails on a SJ21 will easily be competitive for 5 plus years.

Relatively easy to sail (unlike say a planing or foiling dinghy) the SJ21 handles a lot like a dinghy.

Boats weigh only 1,400 pounds and are easily towed and launched. And they are remarkably stable. The fleet in Calgary typically sails with main sail, jib and spinnaker but the genoa in the right conditions really makes the boat move.

Frequently asked questions

Where are you located.

We are a convenient 5-10 minute drive from the major hotels in the San Juan, Condado and Isla Verde area in Puerto Rico. We are located in San Juan Bay Marina at Slip A72. If you are taking a cab, ask your driver to take you to San Juan Bay Marina and reference where the Sizzler Restaurant is at. Once at the Marina, walk through the boatyard towards the lower part of Sizzler Restaurant. Once at sea level, go past a Jetski rental kiosk towards the long dock with boats on either side. Our slip is on the left past the white gate that leads to the dock. Slip numbers are marked on the floor.

How do I book a sail?

You may book online here, or by clicking any of the “book now” buttons. We ask that you call, text, or email us for same-day bookings to ensure availability even if the calendar doesn’t show it. Online bookings are handled through a secure and encrypted provider accepting most major credit cards.

How should I dress?

For daysails we recommend cool, light clothing, hat, sunglasses and sunblock. While San Juan Bay has very calm waters and you will usually not get wet, there is always the possibility of some small splashes of water. Sunset sails have usually calmer breeze and cooler temperatures so you may dress more comfortably, however we do recommend light clothing. If you choose to go out into the ocean, the possibilities of getting wet are more likely as we will be sailing in bigger seas. No shoes allowed on-board.

At what time should I arrive for my sail?

We ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your sail for a proper safety briefing and preparations. Sails depart sharp on time. Plan to be on time as in consideration to others that may be present we can not delay departure time. Failure to be on time for departure will result in forfeiting full fare or a $50 rebooking fee.

How many passengers are allowed on a boat?

We can accommodate 2-6 passengers for a personal, intimate experience. If you wish your sail to be private you may opt for the Private Charter or reserve the boat for your group. If you are sailing alone we ask that you contact us so we may schedule you with a current group.

Do I have to aid in handling the boat?

Your crew will take care of all the boat handling maneuvers so you may sit back and relax, but you are welcome to take part if you want a more hands-on experience.

Will I get seasick?

As we usually sail in very calm waters, the possibilities of getting seasick are almost zero. However, if you have gotten motion sickness at other times, we do recommend taking some remedies beforehand.

What drinks are included?

We offer complimentary soda, water, local beer, rum & coke and special rum punch for adults over 18 years of age. Sunset sails also include Spanish Cava or Prosecco.

Are there age restrictions to sail?

We welcome everyone to enjoy the wonderful experience of sailing! However, US Coast Guard requires children under 13 to wear a lifejacket at all times. There is also certain level of physical exertion that may take place to board and move around so we advise caution for the elderly and persons with mobility issues and serious medical conditions.

Can I bring my own music?

Of course! We encourage you to do so. Our speaker is bluetooth ready so you may connect your own device and use your personal playlist. We use Spotify and Pandora and may look up your favorite station.

Are the booking times shown here the only ones available for a sail?

While the times shown are our standard offerings we are always available for special requests. Give us a call or email us to make special arrangements

What If I have to cancel my reservations?

We have a 48 hour cancellation notice policy for full refund. 48 hours or less cancellations forfeit 50% fare. 24 hour cancellations forfeit full fare. No shows, late to departure time or same-day booking cancellations will forfeit 100% fare.

What happens if my sail is cancelled due to weather?

We want you to enjoy a great experience while sailing with us so we would reschedule your sail for another day when the weather is ideal. If this would not be possible due to your travel plans, we would offer a full refund. The decision to cancel due to weather rests solely on the Captain. Tropical weather can change quite rapidly so some decisions to cancel might be last minute, however we always take into consideration your time and alternate plans so we try to always cancel at least an hour in advance from our scheduled departure time.

Anything else I should know?

Just be ready for a great sailing experience! If you do have any additional questions, please feel free to call, text or email us and we will gladly clear up any doubts.

It is believed that fewer than 300 fixed-keel boats were produced, and even fewer of the shoal-keel boats (believed to be less than 20). Clark experimented with the fixed-keel design predominantly in the production plant located near Seattle, Washington. They handle much like big dinghies, yet with the 400-lb. keel, they are self-righting. This is not of much concern, as capsizing a San Juan 21 is not easy. Initially tender, the San Juan 21 heels to 15 degrees rather easily but firms up there, and once past 40 degrees, the helmsman has to make a rather big mistake to get it to go more. Once past 50 degrees or so, the sturdy little boat will round up and head into the wind. The San Juan 21 is a pleasure to sail for both novices and experienced racers. Due to its light weight (1400 lbs Class Weight), it accelerates briskly in puffs and will literally sail rings around most bigger boats in light to moderate winds. There are several one-design class fleets located at various lakes across the country with active racing schedules all summer. While designed more with performance in mind, the boat is comfortable for weekend cruising for two adults with two small children. It has space for a camping toilet and ample storage for other essentials. They are also easy to single-hand, with the fractional rig's small jib and large main. The sail inventory consists of a large mainsail, a small 110% working jib, a 135% genoa, and a spinnaker. Being a one-design class, rules limit the sails to be made from Dacron and the spinnaker from nylon. This keeps costs down.

Martinsville, Indiana

Make Catalina

Length 22.0

1975 Catalina 22 Pop Top Project Sailboat and Trailer The Catalina 22 is a popular sailboat produced by Catalina Yachts. Its hull measures 21 foot 6 inches (6.55 m), which is rounded up to 22 feet (6.7 m) for use in the model's name. First produced in 1968, it is one of the longest continuously produced sailboats in the world...Over 15000! Parts, videos and know-how are abound on the net 2005 last time previous owner had boat in water. I have never had boat in the water or was able to work on her. 2005 was the last time I was inside the cabin before preparing this listing for ebay. She has been closed up for ten years and is dirty in and out. I sprayed Windex in a few areas inside and dirt just wiped off with no scrubbing. Water, at one time, intruded around the forward hatch. Has complete set of interior cushions in gold plaid pattern. Most are in surprising good condition. NO SMELLS. One has a 1.5x1.5 inch hole in fabric that isn't seen when in place. 1 or 2 have an area of cracking vinyl. In all the noted exceptions, I don't think they would be seen or stop you from sailing PREVIOUS OWNER'S DESCRIPTION: '75 Catalina 22 pop top w/trailer • fair condition - Project boat • Swing Keel • Pop top • Sail Inventory: 2 mains, Jib (Marked San Juan works w/Cat 22s) and 150 Furling I think all are usable • Scupper upgrade in transom • Ablative paint on hull and keel • Never in salt water • Needs good cleaning • I know of no problems with the swing keel • No known leaks around keel pin • Comes with 2 Rudders. Usable but not perfect • Port side blemish in the gel coat • One pop top support needs to be re-bedded • Front hatch needs the frame reinstalled and sealed • Soft spot forward of hatch • Crack in cabin threshold but does not affect anything much • Cracks and crazing in the deck gelcoat that need filling • One stanchion base needs to be re-bedded • Small dent/crack in mast near stays, like pinched on one side at the spreaders. When raising the mast, one of the stays was caught and pulled the spreader forward. See photo. A pontoon boat repair guy told me that a braze could patch for about $25 • Needs halyards but I would get all new running rigging • Replace Hatch Boards or just cut a Plywood Hatch • Standing rigging, I am no judge but it worked when last used and it has been out of the elements since. • The forestay also has a quick-release lever purchased from Catalina Direct, along with quick-release pins for quicker and easier mast- raising and lowering. Those parts are, of course, stainless steel. • Will also include a sliding galley out of a 1984 Cat 22. It slides under the cockpit starboard seating when not in use. It has a faucet, sink, water fresh water holding tank, a drawer and a place for a small portable propane stove. I was going to sell it separately on ebay. They normally go from 150-200. TRAILER • Trailer in good shape, but could use some paint• Has 10 ft extension• Has surge brake system used for two trips since it was installed• Has Buddy Bearings• New load range 'C' tires were put on in Spring of 2010. 63 Miles total mileage as boat was towed from one of our rental homes to our house in Martinsville. No cracks or aging seen.• Extra duty bunks BTW: Good used trailers for sailboats are hard to come by. Have clear titles for boat and trailer. I have described everything I know about her to the best of my ability but I am no sailor. Somethings may be better and others may be worse. She is a project boat and sold as is. This is for local Pickup in Martinsville, Indiana (Just south of Indianapolis) An immediate non-refundable PayPal deposit of $200 is required upon purchase. Balance due in CASH when picked up. No checks or money orders of any kind. Pickup within 7 business days of end of listing. This is not an auction. Will be happy to answer questions Thanks for looking and your interest

The essence of yachting

Perhaps a performance yacht’s most impressive achievement is its ability to create memories. All five senses alive and all vividly recalling the same instant. A perfect moment. A snapshot in time you command yourself to hold. A flawless day.

Blue sky meets blue sea and the horizon nearly vanishes. The sun’s glint off a million ripples as you power south. A picnic with young children in the shallow waters of a favorite cove. A gentle passage under your favorite bridge, a getaway to the open sea. A well earned dinner of fresh fish with lifelong friends. A much anticipated month-long cruise along the coast. A spontaneous sprint to a westward island to watch the sunset.

Memories like these don’t happen by chance. They are made. They are crafted. They are afforded because passionate engineers, artisans, visionaries and craftspeople came together to achieve something truly superlative. And came as close as humanly possible to creating nautical perfection.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Clark Boat Co. had previously built a number of One-Design Dinghy’s, but this was the first ‘SAN JUAN’ and a huge success. Designed displacement was 1250 lbs. but it was found that most ended up at 1400 lbs. Thanks to Samuel Tricky for providing corrected information for this and number of other boats in this category.

"The camaraderie between these two sailors was so palpable and fun to be around, and both Scott and Todd are so mellow and easy going— we just laughed and smiled and talked about a million things and loved the time. The freedom to go where we wanted, to kayak, to sail!, to hang out on the boat, whatever we chose, made the adventure so unstructured and open.

It is hard also to find sufficient praise for the food. Todd’s food is the stuff of legends. It was beyond delicious, and so carefully crafted to our tastes!

I think anyone who likes adventure, loves sailing, and wants to be happy for six days should join Captain Scott and Todd, soon - this season when it’s all available and happening! - and call themselves blessed. A once in a lifetime experience, except I hope not, as we plan to return!"

"Wonderful hosts. Great sailing. The food was excellent and so personalized. The boat is very comfortable. Exceeded our expectations."

Susan J. Smith

"After scheduling a five day sailing cruise with North West Sailing Adventures, I anticipated beautiful scenery, amazing wildlife, and incredible waterways. What I did not anticipate is the incredible professionalism, kindness and dedication of our amazing crew, Captain Scott and First Mate/Chef Todd. They were so knowledgeable of the area, and made every effort to accommodate our every wish or request. The meals were delicious, beautifully plated, as well as healthy, and the humorous banter between the crew members only added to the fun and memories of an amazing adventure!

I can say, without a doubt, that this sailing trip to the San Juan Islands with NW Sailing Adventures was, without question, one of the best vacations ever!  Thank you, Captain Scott and First Mate Todd for providing us with such a memorable adventure.  And please save us a slot next season, we will be back!”

Mae Pierini - Nipomo, CA

Our trip was a great success. We are sailors and Scott is the most knowledgeable sailor we have met. Moreover the navigation and radar equipment is top grade enabling motoring in a morning of deep fog with ease. We sailed for 4 nights (5 days) and winds enabled us to sail without motor assistance for many hours a day. The islands are lovely and a big surprise was the looming, snow capped Mt Baker in the background on several occasions. Seals were abundant and on one occasion we saw half a dozen sea lions sunning themselves on a nearby rock. Tod the mate was also the cook who trained for 2 years in a cooking school. The food was excellent and every effort was made--successfully--to meet the requests we had submitted prior to the cruise. We enthusiastically recommend this cruise company.

The sunken treasure of the San José shipwreck is contested—but its real riches go beyond coins and jewels

The sunken treasure of the San José shipwreck is contested—but its real riches go beyond coins and jewels

The San José was a galleon ship owned by King Philip V of Spain (1683–1746) in the 18th century. It sailed from Portobelo in present-day Panama to Cartagena in Colombia in 1708.

The ship was sunk —still laden with treasure including 11 million gold and silver coins, emeralds and other precious cargo—during the Battle of Barú (also known as Wager's Action), part of the War of the Spanish Succession. This war was between Spain and France on one side, and Britain, the Holy Roman Empire, the Dutch Republic and other European allies on the other.

The search for the San José and its treasure, sunk 600 meters deep, has now become possible thanks to advances in remotely operated underwater vehicle technology. The ship is now in the process of being pulled up from the sea floor . But who is entitled to San José's riches?

In 1979, the US salvage company Sea Search Armada made an exclusive agreement with Colombia to divide the proceeds of the San José 50:50. They had bought out the Glocca Morra Company which discovered what was thought to be the wreck of the San José in 1982.

In 2007, the US Supreme Court ruled that Colombia holds the rights to items deemed to be "national cultural patrimony". Anything else will be halved between the US salvage company Sea Search Armada and Colombia. Ownership of each item would probably have to be decided by independent experts .

However, in 2015, Colombia's president, Juan Manuel Santos, challenged the location Sea Search Armada's suspected held the San José wreck. He confirmed that the San José's true location had been found by the Colombian navy—with the help of British maritime archaeology consultants and the US Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution—in Colombian waters.

Spain and Peru have also claimed ownership , since the San José was a Spanish ship carrying wealth created by enslaved indigenous Peruvian workers. The descendants of the indigenous Bolivian Qhara Qhara people and enslaved African workers in New Granada, who were forced to mine precious metals, have also made a claim .

Spain colonized Colombia, Peru and Bolivia after Christopher Columbus reached America in 1492. The 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas divided the new territory between Spain and Portugal. This resulted in the destruction of indigenous culture, seizure of natural assets and exploitation of inhabitants and enslaved African people. Part of San José's wealth should therefore surely be reserved to create a cultural legacy that would beneficially balance that harmful past.

Research to discover how the San José was built by its Spanish shipbuilders and find out about the crew and the local communities in Colombia and Bolivia is feasible . Documents survive in the archives of the Casa de Contratación de las Indias (Trading House of the Indies), the National Archives of Spain and Lima and Spanish dockyard and shipbuilding archives. Oral history could reveal community folk stories and passed down memories.

The experience of recovering, conserving and interpreting the Tudor ship, the Mary Rose, which sunk in 1545 and was brought up from the seabed in 1982, is a superb example of what could be done with the San José. Scientific analysis of the wreck and remains could determine where the crew came from. As with the Mary Rose , new technology could be used to bring those stories to new audiences.

San José's loss and legacy

In an excellent film analyzing the context of the San José's loss, and exploring its underwater remains, nautical archaeologist Professor Ricardo Borrero argues that the ship's "real value is its historical value and its potential to deliver a lot of information if we ask the proper questions".

Juan David Correa, Colombia's minister of culture, also insists that the value of the wreck is patrimonial and not monetary, saying "history is the treasure" .

In 2024 Colombian archaeologist Carlos Reina Martínez said the Colombian Institute of Archeology and History is seeking to discover what life was like for the 600 people on board the San José when it sank. They also wish to study daily life, the cargo, artillery and merchandise of the colonial era in America. Colombia will invest US$4.5 million (£3.5 million) to recover the ship and its contents and conserve them.

The proposed Colombian investigation is inspired by the University of Portsmouth Arts and Humanities Research Council Project Unpath'd Waters , which I am a part of. Our research into the British HMS Looe, shipwrecked in 1705, has revealed that its twice-yearly Newfoundland convoys were vital to British global goals during the War of Spanish Succession.

Unpath'd Waters seeks to connect dispersed historical collections to bring new stories to new audiences. Inspired by our work, the recovery and restoration of the San José could also connect its many stories—the Spanish shipbuilders, the craftspeople, the 600 passengers and crew and their descendants. But will their voices be heard? It will take a concerted effort from teams around the world, not a power struggle, to ensure that they are.

The SJ21 sails like a big dinghy & is best treated that way. Its sailplan is balanced, with slight lee helm in low winds and slight weather helm above 18 kts or 20 degrees of heel.
