Grand Banks 60 Skylounge [Boat Review]
March 9, 2020 11:38 am
Old-world craftsmanship and modern technology combine in the iconic builder’s latest model..
This article originally appeared in the January 2019 edition of Sea Magazine, written by Arnie Hammerman
On an overcast and rainy day on Chesapeake Bay, I boarded the new Grand Banks 60 Skylounge for a test drive. The GB60 is a big vessel with a length overall of 65 feet, 4 inches, and we were in a tight spot in the marina, tucked between pilings with a sailboat side-tied directly ahead. As I threw off the lines, Capt. Graeme Mellor, Grand Banks’ delivery captain, eased the boat forward with the optional Yacht Controller. From his position on the sidedeck, he was able to gently pirouette the boat out of the slip and guide it through the tight marina. Once clear we both retreated to the Sky lounge to relax in the twin Stidd helm seats.
The Grand Banks 60 Skylounge quietly and purposefully sliced through the water as we headed around the point. In the more open waters of the bay, a short 3-foot chop building ahead was nearly imperceptible as we ran our numbers. The GB60 accelerated smoothly with little or no bowrise. It carved turns easily, a slight lean barely perceptible because of its low center of gravity. There was little or no bow spray as the boat cut through the chop and not a drop reached the windshield.
High-tech construction is combined with a unique warped hull form on the GB60. A fine entry cuts through the water, which then streams along the hull in an even, unencumbered fashion. There are no hard chines, strakes or tunnels to disturb water flow as the hull transitions smoothly and flattens aft to around 8 degrees of deadrise. The result is a semi-displacement hull that moves cleanly through the water and allows a boat with a lot of accommodation space to still be fast and efficient. Full-displacement hulls require effort to push water out of the way. Planing hulls expend propulsion energy trying to lift the boat out of the water. Neither of these issues occurs with the GB60, which is designed to slice easily through the water.
With twin Volvo Penta Dl3-800 diesels turning shafts, the GB60 cruised easily at 22 knots, where the Dl3s burned 49.5 gph, for a range of 613 miles. Slowing to 19 to 20 knots brought the fuel burn below 40 gph and increased range by another 100 miles. Top speed was a respectable 28 knots, but buyers looking for a faster top speed should know that manufacturer tests with larger engines reached a top speed of 36 knots. At trawler speeds, the 60 has remarkable range. Even in our somewhat lumpy test conditions, at 10 knots the yacht’s range was 1,661 miles; reducing speed to 8 knots pushed its range beyond 2,500 miles.
Our test boat had Volvo Penta Dl3-800s, but Dl3-900s will soon be standard, and Grand Banks will offer Dl3-1000s and Dl3 IPS 1200s as options. Few builders offer both IPS and shaft options on the same boat, and by doing so Grand Banks can satisfy buyers regardless of their preferred drive type.
Forward visibility is excellent from the helm, whose teak-clad wheel is centered and controls are within easy reach. An electronics package features twin Garmin 8617 MFD flat panels connected to a variety of devices. Rear visibility is excellent via a camera feed on the MFDs, and the Yacht Controller helps when docking; a cockpit station is another option. Opening windows on both sides and sliding hatches overhead deliver good ventilation to the captain and companion.
The Skylounge has 6 feet, 5 inches of headroom and covers 134 square feet, as measured by my Bosch 165 laser tape measure. It contains the helm, a large seating area with a table, and a day head. Access is via an internal stairway, and an exterior cockpit ladder is an option. A door leads aft to a large open deck that’s home to a Steelhead ESIO00 davit and a 12-foot AB Aluminum RIB with a 40 hp Yamaha outboard. When the tender is lowered, the aft deck can be used for entertaining.
An open flybridge with a hardtop and no day head is standard, but the climate-controlled comfort of the optional Skylounge was welcome on a muggy test day. The Skylounge is a quiet, comfortable spot to run the boat; I measured 53 decibels at idle while we waited for a bridge. The additional accommodations provide a great place to get away from dockside action and retreat, and with the day head the Skylounge provides a semiprivate extra cabin.
Grand Banks is an iconic brand that has built thousands of boats over the last 60 years, but that does not mean the builder is stuck in the past. New leadership (see Evolution of a Brand sidebar) is combining the best of new and old. The GB60 SL’s performance is modern and efficient, but at heart it is still a Grand Banks. Abundant high-quality teak flows throughout the interior, with nary a dark spot to be found. Joiner work is impeccable, and built-in furniture, contoured doors and wall panels with contrasting fabrics highlight the wood. Large salon windows bring in light to the fully equipped galley and its Silestone counters.
Two galley arrangements are available: aft or forward. The aft galley is convenient for serving passengers in the cockpit area. The Skylounge model I tested has the galley forward and to port; the internal Skylounge stairs are opposite, beside the door to the covered sidedecks. Both layouts work well and provide similar seating and dining areas.
Belowdecks the master stateroom features a king bed athwartships, large hanging lockers and an en suite head. Teak floors in the master extend into the head where a large shower compartment features a glass door, a teak sole with a stainless drain, a corner bench and convenient shelves. The forward cabin has a queen bed, a hanging locker and an opening overhead hatch for ventilation. A second head with a separate shower is accessed from the corridor. To starboard, a twin cabin features a single bunk along the hull, and a step-down cabin with a single athwartships bunk is tucked beneath the salon stairs. This cabin should be fun for kids, but the bunks are big enough for crew or other adults. A washer/dryer combo is in one of the cabinets.
Quality workmanship is demonstrated throughout the boat. Highly finished interior panels and fixtures, polished stainless rails, smooth and even glass work, a well laid out engine room, and precisely run and carefully labeled wiring all show the dedication Grand Banks has to excellence. The yacht’s styling is salty and distinctively Grand Banks, yet its performance is nimble and efficient. The Grand Banks 60 Skylounge is an excellent example of combining the best of old-world craftsmanship with modern design and technology and is a serious contender for anyone looking at a boat of this size and class.

+ Walk-Through
The 81 2003 Hargrave is a luxuriously appointed yacht that provides unimpeded wheelchair access from dock to Sky Lounge. Using clever design and thoughtful installation, the changes and additions which ake this yacht so accessable have had immimal impact on the yacht, in fact, a casual visitor might not even notice most of them.
The main deck has an extremely spacious salon with a conservative motif comprised of neutral colors and sensible furniture. The salon has ample room for the owner to maneuver easily around his masterpiece while enjoying the company of family and friends. Cherry wood with burl accents adds warmth to the spacious floor plan. She sleeps eight people in four gorgeous staterooms. The master stateroom features an elevator entrance to port with enough room for an en suite head and walk-in closet. Built as one of the only entirely handicap accessible motoryachts of this size range, “Pretty Lady” is truly unusual.
When this extraordinary vessel was unveiled in 2003 it complied with every industry standard from the DNV to the ABYC.
The high gloss Cherry wood with Burl accents, matching grain patterns, full crown moldings and tray ceiling treatments reflect Hargrave's impeccable joinerwork.
Most visitors won't pay attention to the forward port corner, which has what seems to be an oversized glass-front china cabinet with a titled map of the Caribbean above the buffet area. In reality, this is a neatly disguised elevator that starts on the lower level in the master suite and opens to both the salon and sky lounge to provide full access to each deck.
Not only is the elevator unobtrusive, it's also beautifully finished, from the diamond pattern glass doors, to the inlaid flooring, to the glossy Cherry wood that lines the elevator shaft itself.
An oversized day head is forward and to starboard, with an extra wide pocket door and room inside to maneuver a wheelchair.
The galley has more than enough working space on the granite counters, wwhich are surrounded by Cherry wood cabinets. Forward there is a wraparound dinette.

Grand Banks 60 Skylounge yacht tour: A generous slice of Americana
- yacht tours
Skylounge yachts are something of a rarity in the UK, but in America they’re all the rage and this model shows why...
The Grand Banks 60 was launched in 2017 to mark the company’s 60th anniversary and in this video, filmed at the Miami International Boat Show, Nick Burnham shows us around the Skylounge version.
Stepping on board via the transom, it is immediately obvious that this is a yacht of great substance, with chunky bulwarks and handrails giving a great sense of security in the cockpit.
The highly customisable layout in the saloon includes a open galley, dinette and lounging area, while the accommodation lies forward, with a VIP suite in the bow and the master cabin running along the port side of the lower deck.
Up in the Skylounge, the benefits of this design shine through, with a raised helm position entirely surrounded by glass, giving great 360-degree visibility, as well as air-conditioned comfort amid the Miami heat.
Enjoy the tour…

A flybridge is no longer just a flybridge—if Monte Carlo Yachts has anything to say about it, that is. The Italian shipyard has just unveiled a new superyacht with an enclosed flybridge that doubles as a scenic sky lounge.
The new design is a riff on the yard’s flagship 105-footer that was tweaked at the request of its new owner. Fittingly dubbed the MCY 105 Skylounge, the vessel was penned by noted design studio Nuvolari-Lenard and will feature a luxe enclosed flybridge that spans some 463 square feet.

The new space will be outfitted with an upper deck lounge and dining area for the requisite wining and dining, along with a transparent glass ceiling that offers uninterrupted views of the sky and sea. According to designers Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard, the area can also be customized to each seafarer’s needs to give “unmatched levels of freedom.”
“It’s surprising to think that the whole area of the main deck, or the flybridge, can be destined to uses never imagined before, freeing the creativity and fulfilling the owners’ desires in terms of intended use of the space,” the designers said in a statement.

The flybridge is simply the cherry atop this spectacular and spacious superyacht. The yard said the model will “surprise owners worldwide for the impressive volumes, comparable with the ones of much larger units.”
You can expect full-beam living areas on the main and upper decks, as well as an oversized owner’s cabin. Outside, meanwhile, there’s a generous aft terrace that promises “mesmerizing views in palatial comfort” and a bow lounge with sun pads and dining tables.
As the biggest superyacht in the fleet, the MCY 105 is equipped with twin MTU 16V 2000 M86 engines that enable a top speed of 27 knots and a cruising speed of between 23 and 24 knots.
The first MCY 105 Skylounge hull has already been sold and is due for delivery in the summer of 2022. It will spend its initial season traveling around the Mediterranean—where its passengers will be sure to take in some seriously good views.

Monte Carlo Yachts 76 Skylounge Review
- By Tom Serio
- Updated: September 2, 2021
Italy’s Monte Carlo Yachts expanded its lineup this past year with the MCY 70 Skylounge, and it’s adding to its offerings again with an MCY 76 Skylounge. Like the its smaller sistership, the MCY 76 Skylounge has the builder’s signature high freeboard and overlaid circular hullside windows. Enclosing the flybridge adds interior volume, offers all-season cruising and creates an aft terrace.
The main deck is broad like a penthouse suite. Hull No. 1 has bleached-oak woodwork, light fabrics and white overheads, which add to the salon’s open feel along with the 6-foot-8-inch headroom. A single-pane windshield is flanked by curved side glass, creating panoramic vistas and allowing in ambient light.
Nestled under the forward windshield is a raised U-shaped settee with twin pedestal tables—perfect for a small group or a quiet breakfast. There’s an additional lounge to port. Amidships is another oasis for relaxing and enjoying the views.
The galley is aft with off-white cabinetry that hides the appliances while keeping them easily accessible. Twin undercounter fridge units allow for drinks to be kept in one side and food in the other. A freezer drawer, dishwasher, microwave oven and stowage are all beneath, with cabinets above. The only thing protruding from the counter is the faucet for the stainless-steel sink with an etched-glass backsplash. Hardwood soles should make for easy cleanup.
Since the MCY 76 Skylounge is a semicustom yacht, the galley can be moved forward, creating space for a formal dining table amidships and a salon lounge aft. In either configuration, alfresco dining on the aft deck is possible with a transom bench seat and room for loose chairs. Dual staircases lead to the hydraulic swim platform and maintain the flow of traffic.
The yacht’s sky lounge is accessible via a floating staircase amidships in the salon and has an all-weather social area with easy access to the captain. The owner of this yacht is an enthusiastic owner-operator; apparently, at times, the hired captain has to ask the owner if he can drive.
The helm has three 24-inch Raymarine multifunction displays set into individual, leather-wrapped pods. The dash also has space for just about any electronic controller or display that’s desired. An overhead console is ideal for displays that just need a glance periodically. Twin helm seats allow for a guest to join the captain. The armrests for the center chair have controls for the chart plotters, autopilot and manual rudder control.
An electric hardtop and separate skylight add to the open feeling, along with 6-foot-6-inch headroom, side windows and double-wide glass doors aft. This space also has a convertible portside sofa and a desk that makes for an office with a view. There is room for a TV and wine chiller in the cabinetry.
Through the aft doors is a terrace with 142 square feet of real estate. Ringed with stainless-steel rails for safety, the terrace is sized for lounge chairs, a sofa and/or tables. To starboard are a fridge and barbecue. Owners can use this space as a private sun deck, or a spot to sip cocktails and watch the world go by.
The accommodations on the lower deck include an amidships master stateroom that spans the 18-foot-10-inch beam. With a king berth, the stateroom is flanked by MCY’s circular windows and has 6-foot-6-inch headroom. This owner opted for extra stowage, with dressers flanking the berth, as well as a walk-in closet with drawers and shelves. There’s also a washer and dryer.
The two guest staterooms have twin berths and en suite heads. Forward is the VIP stateroom, with a centerline berth and a head. Crew quarters are aft with two cabins.
The MCY 76 Skylounge is designed to Certification Category A, which means it’s seaworthy for voyages with winds over Force 8 (34 to 40 knots) and wave heights above 13 feet. Not that anyone wants to cruise in those conditions, but the yacht is built to deal with them. The Quick stabilization system, which includes fins and interceptors, assists in creating a stable ride. Construction is vacuum infusion to ensure resin saturation through the fiberglass, Kevlar and carbon-fiber layers, while saving weight and reducing emissions.
The Monte Carlo Yacht 76 Skylounge takes a proven design and adds a high level of customization, all-weather cruising comfort and increased interior volume. It’s a recipe that should have broad appeal.

45m Royal Hakvoort motor yacht Awatea joins market
The 45-metre Royal Hakvoort motor yacht Awatea has joined the market with Stuart Larsen of Fraser .
Delivered in the Netherlands from Royal Hakvoort in 2008, the steel-hulled yacht, with aluminium superstructure, was refitted in 2023.
Her exterior, finished in pale blue and white, was styled by Cor D. Rover . The interior was designed by Felix Buytendijk and naval architecture is by Diana Yacht Design .
Accommodation is for a party of 10 to 12 in five cabins, including a full-beam master forward on the main deck. Two of the four guest suites have additional Pullman berths and there are quarters for a crew of nine.
The interior is of a "modern classic style", with mahogany panels, bevelled raised-panel joinery and classic white painted surfaces with beamed deck heads. The prevailing colour scheme includes tones of blue, aqua and white. Her main saloon leads forward to a separate formal dining room, both spaces having large windows.
Awatea sports a sky lounge with a dining table and lounge seating, opening to al fresco dining table aft. Her tender garage converts into a "proper beach club" with its transom hatch folding out to form a swim platform, accessed via twin staircases. The sundeck features a whirlpool tub, bar, dining area and ample sunlounging spaces.
Twin 960hp Caterpillar diesels give the 499GT yacht for sale a top speed of 13.5 knots, cruising speed of 11.5 knots and range of 4,600 nautical miles.
Stuart Larsen pointed out that her 15-year Lloyd's Register survey has just been completed and Awatea was "the first yacht to be built for chartering under the Dutch government rules for Commercial Cruising Vessels (CCV)".
Lying in West Palm Beach, USA, Awatea is asking $21,900,000.

Strange Glow Over Moscow Skies Triggers Panic as Explosions Reported
B right flashes lit up the night sky in southern Moscow in the early hours of Thursday morning, new footage appears to show, following reports of an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of the city.
Video snippets circulating on Russian-language Telegram channels show a series of flashes on the horizon of a cloudy night sky, momentarily turning the sky a number of different colors. In a clip shared by Russian outlet MSK1.ru, smoke can be seen rising from a building during the flashes lighting up the scene.
Newsweek was unable to independently verify the details of the video clips, including when and where it was filmed. The Russian Ministry of Emergency situations has been contacted via email.
Several Russian Telegram accounts said early on Thursday that residents of southern Moscow reported an explosion and a fire breaking out at an electrical substation in the Leninsky district, southeast of central Moscow.
Local authorities in the Leninsky district told Russian outlet RBC that the explosion had happened in the village of Molokovo. "All vital facilities are operating as normal," Leninsky district officials told the outlet.
The incident at the substation in Molokovo took place just before 2 a.m. local time, MSK1.ru reported.
Messages published by the ASTRA Telegram account, run by independent Russian journalists, appear to show residents close to the substation panicking as they question the bright flashes in the sky. One local resident describes seeing the bright light before losing access to electricity, with another calling the incident a "nightmare."
More than 10 villages and towns in the southeast of Moscow lost access to electricity, the ASTRA Telegram account also reported. The town of Lytkarino to the southeast of Moscow, lost electricity, wrote the eastern European-based independent outlet, Meduza.
Outages were reported in the southern Domodedovo area of the city, according to another Russian outlet, as well as power failures in western Moscow. Electricity was then restored to the areas, the Strana.ua outlet reported.
The cause of the reported explosion is not known. A Telegram account aggregating news for the Lytkarino area described the incident as "an ordinary accident at a substation."
The MSK1.ru outlet quoted a local resident who speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but no other Russian source reported this as a possible cause.
Ukraine has repeatedly targeted Moscow with long-range aerial drones in recent months, including a dramatic wave of strikes in late May.
On Sunday, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said the region's air defense systems had intercepted an aerial drone over the city of Elektrostal, to the east of Moscow. No damage or casualties were reported, he said.
The previous day, Russian air defenses detected and shot down another drone flying over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow, Sobyanin said.
There is currently no evidence that an aerial drone was responsible for the reported overnight explosion at the electrical substation in southern Moscow.
