Working with the Florida Department of Education and Atlantic Technical College, MIASF established the State's first registered Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program. The two-year program gives apprentices a basic set of shipyard skills to jump start a career in the marine industry. The Yacht Service Technician Apprenticeship Program offers a high wage, high skill, and high demand career path that fills a specific need for skilled workers in the marine industry. Working closely with MIASF and local employers, Atlantic Technical College developed a robust curriculum that includes rigging, forklift and crane operations, pipefitting/plumbing, welding/fabricating, carpentry, and painting. A skilled workforce is critical to the growth of the marine industry and this program is the first step in training the next generation of skilled trade workers that are needed.

Berthon sets the standard for marine apprenticeships
- Theo Stocker
- March 11, 2015
Yacht broker Berthon is leading a group of marine companies in setting new standards for apprenticeships in the industry
Berthon, the Lymington-based shipyard, marina and international yacht broker, hosted the latest ‘Trailblazer’ meeting on 10 March 2015 to coincide with National Apprenticeship Week, and were joined by companies including Sunseeker, Green Marine, the RNLI and Princess Yachts. The aim of the group is to create a new apprenticeship standard and assessment plan for boatbuilding, having been given the task by the Apprenticeships Unit run by the Department for Education (DfE) and the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.
Keith Longman, Yard Manager at Berthon said: ‘Our Trailblazer group are excited at the opportunity to influence the training delivery of our apprentices like we have never had before. The government’s strategy that apprenticeship training should be employer led is welcomed by us and we will embrace the challenge to build a standard that will deliver the competence and behaviors that we require now and in the future.’
Whilst apprenticeships already exist within the industry, the recommendations of the group will ensure that the training schemes and qualifications offered meet the needs of the current and future economy. During 2013-2014, over 850,000 were engaged in apprenticeships nationwide, with 70 per cent of trainess continuing to work for the same employer once they had completed their schemes.
The new Boatbuilding Refit, Repair & Maintenance (Marine) Apprenticeship Trailblazer will commence in September 2015. To apply for an apprenticeship with Berthon, go to www.Berthon.co.uk
Sarah Dhanda, Senior Federation Director at British Marine Federation, said: ‘By developing the apprentice scheme further we are ensuring the quality of the industry’s training programme. We will be preserving much needed skills and ensuring the sector is well placed for the future, whilst crucially maintaining a strong profile both in government and within young people.’

Luxury rules at the moscow yacht show.
by Maria Sapozhnikova
The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.
This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.
A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.
It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.
The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.
Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.
Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.

A Princess Royal Award for Princess Yachts’ Apprenticeship Programme
by Julia Bena Aug 26, 2020 2020 awards , In the press
South Devon College employer partner, Princess Yachts, are thrilled to announce that they have been awarded a Princess Royal Training Awards for their #Apprenticeship scheme. The awards are selected by HRH The Princess Royal and the President of City & Guilds Group to recognise organisations whose training has delivered measurable business impact.
The City & Guilds Group announced on Friday, 14 August that 43 recipients from a wealth of sectors have been commended by the 2020 Princess Royal Training Awards. The already award winning Princess Yachts Apprenticeship scheme certainly deserves the recognition it is receiving, as recruitment continued throughout the Covid-19 lockdown period via Zoom interviews, and a record number of apprentices will be starting their programme at Princess Yachts in September 2020, with apprentices placed across all areas of the business.
Now in its fifth year, the Princess Royal Training Awards recognises employers across the United Kingdom with outstanding training and development programmes that have had a direct impact on business performance. Princess Yachts as a 2020 winner of this award have demonstrated ‘exceptional commitment to training, despite facing unprecedented challenges of Covid-19’ according to the judges.
Princess Yachts won the award for ‘positioning apprenticeships as a viable career choice’. Princess was recognised for having invested in its apprenticeship programme to ensure that it has a strong talent pipeline in place. Apprenticeships at Princess are open to employees of any age, with apprentices progressing their career path within the business and in fact 10% of the current managers within the business are former apprentices. Getting an apprenticeship with Princess Yachts is widely viewed as an extremely attractive career opportunity in the region.
South Devon College have helped to accommodate the growth of Princess Yacht’s apprenticeships since forming their partnership in October last year with a unique and innovative apprenticeship programme. At the College’s Paignton Campus is the dedicated Princess Yachts Learning Academy workshop facility. Inside is one of the luxury yacht builder’s V40 hulls allowing apprentices to work with the same industry-standard products and equipment, whether at their workplace or studying at the College.
“We are so pleased to be awarded a Princess Royal Training Award for our apprenticeship programme,” says Alison Thompson, Head of Learning & Development at Princess Yachts,
“the assessment process was rigorous and very different this year taking place remotely via MS Teams. However, the assessors took the time to speak to some of our apprentices and to gain a better understanding of our collaborative partnership with South Devon College who support us in the delivery of our programme. It is great to know we are setting the right standards, experience and support to our apprentices as they begin their career with us and ultimately the marine industry.”

Award-Winning Program Helps Apprentices Move the World Forward
“Cobblers had apprentices, clockmakers had apprentices, even the emperor in Star Wars – Darth Vader was his apprentice,” said Michael Hiebert, electrical maintenance lead at Spirit AeroSystems and IBEW vice chairman. “Apprentices have been around to learn how to do something forever.”
At Spirit, we believe apprenticeships have the power to ignite change. They can take skills and expertise to the next level and provide a foundation you can stand on well into the future. But we’re not talking about an apprenticeship that just lasts a summer. It’s not a plug to ply your trade for pennies. We’re talking about one that is meaningful.
Spirit has always been a company that strives on safety and advanced technology. Getting the opportunity to train, and learn about the technology, and aeronautics, was an awesome opportunity for me and my family.
Our apprenticeship program won the statewide and regional 2022 Apprenticeship Champions and Partners Award from the Kansas Department of Commerce. It’s based on the belief that the work we do moves people, communities, and the world forward – and that apprentices are a vital part in doing so. It’s an opportunity to learn and train with seasoned mentors.
“I feel like I’ve learned more here in two years than I did in two years of college,” said Austin Lake, a mechanical maintenance apprentice in Spirit’s program. “It’s definitely been a great experience, and I really enjoy it.”
And on top of that, it’s an opportunity to be compensated for advancing your skills.
It’s my hope that programs like the Spirit Apprenticeship program can get more people interested in the technical fields and in manufacturing in general. There’s little that’s more rewarding than a tangible job well done.
“This is a real full-time job with benefits and insurance and vacation, and all that stuff. But we’re going to pay for you to go to school, and we’re going to pay for you to go through this training,” said Cristin Boyle, NC programming manager.
It’s a program that fuels both personal and professional growth. It gives you the tools, the education and the knowledge you need to join a long line of experienced professionals looking to build the future.
Spirit offers some amazing apprenticeship programs that offer individuals a career path. So, if one of the programs they offer is what you are looking for as an individual take the opportunity they offer and run with it.
We offer apprenticeship opportunities at our locations across the world. If you’re looking for a rewarding start to a career that can set you up for success, visit our apprenticeship page to learn more.

I HAVE A PASSION FOR
WHY BUILD WITH SPIRIT YACHTS
“TWENTY YEARS FROM NOW YOU WILL BE MORE DISAPPOINTED BY THE THINGS YOU DIDN’T DO THAN BY THE ONES YOU DID. SO THROW OFF THE BOWLINES, SAIL AWAY FROM THE SAFE HARBOR. CATCH THE TRADE WINDS IN YOUR SAILS.” MARK TWAIN.
To create a Spirit yacht, is to craft something unique to be cherished and shared. As designs come to life on the page and sections of wood evolve into a hull, the evolution of a Spirit is a fascinating and enthralling process. It is a truly creative and collaborative process between the owner and the Spirit team.
Whether bringing to life a cruising yacht, a competitive racer or a powerful motor yacht, Spirit delivers on each and every client brief.
Inspire your imagination by exploring the online portfolio of Spirit projects, then contact the team to discuss your ideas.
“ONE CAN’T APPRECIATE THE SKILL AND CRAFTSMANSHIP THAT GOES INTO CREATING A SPIRIT UNTIL YOU SEE IT EVOLVING STEP BY STEP. THE PRIDE THAT EVERYBODY TAKES IN THE QUALITY OF THE FINISH IS IMPRESSIVE. ”
WORLD-RENOWNED WOODWORK
Spirit Yachts comprises an award-winning team of craftsmen and women who are committed to showcasing the beauty of wood. Whether its strong Mahogany Sipo ringframes, exposed Douglas fir hull planking or bespoke cabinetry pieces, a Spirit yacht celebrates the natural properties of sustainably-sourced timber.
BEAUTY STRENGTH WARMTH
WOOD IS AT THE HEART OF EVERY SPIRIT YACHT.
The hull construction of a Spirit begins with the laminating of wooden ring frames over full-size computer-generated patterns. The ring frames are positioned upside down onto a ‘strongback’ before the centreline structure is laminated as one continuous structure over the entire length of the hull.
No moulds are used in the construction process of a Spirit. The beam shelves are fitted before the whole assembly is bevelled and faired to take the first fore and aft layer of hull planking.
In the larger Spirits, the central frames are reinforced with carbon inner frames to take the load of the mast, chain plates and high-aspect lead keel below.
The hull planking is stiffened and reinforced by the application of double-diagonal veneers epoxy bonded at 45° before the whole hull is covered with an epoxy glass sheath.
This last phase is not structural but stabilises the timber to allow for the perfect hull paint finish for which Spirit is noted.
For the interior, exposed wooden frames and hull planking provide a natural warmth and beauty. Intricate joinery and exquisite cabinetmaking below deck showcase Spirit’s eye for detail and expertise.
