How We started

YVI was founded on one principal and that's to give our clients the most memorable experience on the water! The company was founded by two friends, one chartered yachts and the other chartered private jets.  Both have a passion for being on the water, so they teamed up to build Yacht Charter International a yacht charter brokerage, management and travel company. A company that catered to both of their clientele. It is with love and commitment that the company's leadership is dedicated to service driven lifestyle experiences and international growth!

Westport’s commitment to serving our customers begins the moment each owner signs the contract to purchase a new or brokerage yacht.

At delivery, owner and captain are presented with a list of contacts at the appropriate sales center, in the service department and at the shipyard, for 24 hour-a-day access and immediate response to any need.

Stability in Personnel – Relationships

You will find a consistent relationship with the people you have come to identify and call upon during the entire length of your new construction process and delivery. Westport is proud of our decades-long company associates. The majority of the Westport craftsmen, office associates, management, and sales & services associates have been with the company for over a decade. Many have tenures of several decades.

Yacht Service & Support Anywhere in the World – From The Start

Once final commissioning is complete, experienced service representatives accompany your crew for a comprehensive sea trial and orientation, so that your Westport Yacht is delivered ready for you to board and enjoy.

Following delivery, Westport maintains regular contact with each yacht, to ensure the vessel’s satisfactory operation and advise crew on maintenance issues.

At Westport, we take service seriously. If, for example, you experience a problem, we don’t expect you to find and contact the manufacturer in order to chase down the warranty claim or repair/replacement.

Galápagos Islands

The Off the west coast of Ecuador, are unique jewels set in the shimmering waters of the Pacific Ocean. The volcanic archipelago is comprised of 18 large islands, of which four are inhabited, and three smaller ones.

Set 1,000 kilometres off the coast of Ecuador, the volcanic archipelago of the Galapagos waits to inspire and amaze. Straddling the equator, 18 main islands, 3 small islands and numerous rocks and islets are part of a national park and marine reserve only explorable by boat. Many anchorages dotted throughout the rich, wildlife-filled waters, allow yacht guests to experience the unique landscapes and wildlife that each island has to offer.

Originally from the Alabama Gulf Coast, Joe has close to 25 years in the shipping industry. After an early tour in the U.S. Marines, Joe pursued a business career eventually earning an MBA in Shipping & Logistics from the Middlesex University in the U.K.

He began his career in shipping in the port of Mobile, Alabama. Having held management and business development roles throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, he eventually relocated to his adopted home of Panama in 2002 where he now serves as CEO of Norton Lilly International (Panama), market leader at the Panama Canal.

“I am proud to lead and collaborate with a team of nearly 100 shipping professionals in Panama, where we strive to uphold Norton Lilly’s five core values: Safety, Excellence, Integrity, Learning, and Fun.” In his spare time, Joe enjoys surfing and exploring Panama with his wife and two sons.

An expert in the Galapagos Islands, he has lived here since 1993. Johnny worked to become a qualified Galapagos nature guide and has been certified since 1996. Through the years, he has accompanied many cruise ships and pleasure crafts as a local guide.

Pros and Cons of Moving to Moscow

This guide was written prior to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine and is therefore not reflective of the current situation. Travel to Russia is currently not advisable due to the area's volatile political situation.

Rich in history and culture, Moscow is an exciting destination for expats. Nevertheless, they may experience frustrations arising from bureaucracy, a difficult language adjustment and extreme weather conditions. Nonetheless, the city offers an attractive lifestyle with its active social life and vibrant arts and culture scene. 

Accommodation in Moscow

Densely populated Moscow offers a variety of options for accommodation, though lots of competition and high prices make finding the perfect home a bit tricky.

+ PRO: Range of options

There are many different types of accommodation available in Moscow. Expats are just as likely to find themselves in a pre-revolutionary apartment with high ceilings, thick walls and interesting architecture as in a modern apartment block with good facilities and high-tech features. There are also several international compounds with other expats. These gated communities usually offer their own sports facilities and social activities. 

- CON: High demand and expensive 

With so many people living in Moscow, housing is in great demand and can therefore be expensive. Apartments are also often small, and expats may be disappointed with what their money can buy. Realistically, size, quality and location are the most important factors influencing the cost of accommodation in Moscow. Expats with a limited budget may need to compromise on one or more of these factors to find a home that best suits them.

Lifestyle in Moscow

Moscow is a huge city, offering a wide range of activities and events . The expat community is close-knit, giving new arrivals the opportunity to make friends.

+ PRO: Great social scene 

There is so much to do in Moscow, with activities catering for every interest. Most groups and organisations are well-organised and welcoming to newcomers. The expat community is busy throughout the year with balls and charity events.

Nightlife within the city is excellent, with a variety of bars, clubs and restaurants to choose from. The quality of museums, art galleries, theatres and concerts is also outstanding.

- CON: Eating out can be expensive

Restaurants in Moscow can be extremely expensive. Expats may find their social life is limited if living on a budget. Luckily, knowing the right places will help make going out more affordable.

Education and schools in Moscow

+ pro: international schools are available .

There are several international schools in Moscow offering excellent quality education and facilities. There are also good private Russian schools, although only a small percentage of expat children attend these.

- CON: Demand is high and space is limited

The demand for schools outweighs the supply. Therefore, schools in Moscow can be expensive with long waiting lists. Schools are usually located outside of central Moscow. So, unless expats live close to the school, children will have to travel some distance by school bus or car each day.

Climate in Moscow

+ pro: many winter and summer outdoor activities.

The climate in Moscow is quite extreme. Winter weather can be beautiful in Moscow, with blue skies and sunshine on the white snow. Cross-country skiing is popular with expats and ice-skating is possible all over the city as many playgrounds are made into ice-rinks. Summer is a great time to explore Moscow, as the city is generally quieter. There are lakeside and river beaches in Moscow, where expats and locals alike can take advantage of the good weather.

- CON: Long winters 

The extreme winter weather can make living in Moscow challenging for most of the year. Expats should make sure to have enough thick and warm winter clothing to get them through. 

Safety in Moscow

- con: bribery and corruption.

Bribery and corruption are still issues in Moscow, and expats are sometimes affected by this. It's also not uncommon to find incidents of racism.

Healthcare in Moscow

+ pro: medical facilities are of a high standard .

There are many private medical centres in Moscow with well-trained doctors who can, in most cases, speak English. Dental treatment is also of a high standard in the city.

- CON: Healthcare is expensive

Getting medical treatment can sometimes be expensive, although most expats have insurance to cover these costs. Dental treatment is also pricey, although competitive with other European prices. 

Public transport in Moscow

+ pro: comprehensive public transport system.

Moscow has an impressive public transport system . The metro is not only clean, safe, efficient and fast; it is also a tourist attraction. Daily tours explore the metro system, with guides showing tourists through some of the city's most beautiful stations. These stations often resemble palaces, with sculptures, mosaics and even chandeliers. There is also an extensive bus, trolleybus and tram route throughout Moscow. Many of Moscow’s buses now even have Wi-Fi access.

- CON: Crowded public transport during rush hour 

Rush hour on the metro can be unpleasantly crowded. Many of the metro stations and trains also haven’t changed all their signs to show both the Cyrillic alphabet and the Latin alphabet. Being able to read place names in Russian is therefore helpful to avoid getting lost in the rush hour chaos.

- CON: Heavy traffic

Bad traffic can put people off travelling in and around Moscow. Luckily, the metro system is good and expats living near transport stops shouldn't have any issues getting around. The traffic could be a problem for those who choose to drive in Moscow, however.

“The themes of the show and the way in which it’s women, complicated women, but it’s very diverse and it’s very interesting and it’s very interconnected and the way we’re all interconnected. And I loved that it was a global show and that it was very, very relevant,” said Kidman, who joined the panel virtually. “So all the things that you go, ‘Okay, this is something worth fighting for.’ ”

Kidman revealed that she immediately zeroed on Wang to lead the effort after viewing her 2019 film The Farewell . “I saw The Farewell and was completely enraptured by it,” she recalled. “I saw it and went, ‘There she is. There’s our creator, so we have to pursue her.’ And I did. Subsequently, she then took the piece and said, ‘Okay, here’s the book. Now I want to make it mine. There’s huge aspects to each storyline that I want to change and grow.’ And she is the voice of all of us. She was to put together a fantastic writers room and it’s a very, very strong female vision and female voice.”

Wang appreciated the freedom she was given to shape and mold the source material. “I have to thank Nicole and Amazon for being so incredibly supportive and just saying ‘Yes, take the book blank canvas, do whatever you want to do with it,’ ” she said, assembling an all-female writers room that included the book’s author Janice Y. K. Lee.

“A writers room, is a dinner party: It’s all about the chemistry and you don’t really know how it’s going to work out until everyone’s together,” added Wang. “And we were really lucky that we had great chemistry.”

With Kidman at the head of the ensemble, Wang was looking for actors to add balance, contrast and perspective. Crucial was the casting of Ji-young Yoo as Marcy, the complicated young woman who anchors the miniseries’ early narrative.

“We opened the show with Mercy’s perspective and we learned that she’s the perpetrator, but in many ways you learn that she’s just a kid and also a victim,” said Wang. “We needed somebody who had both the vulnerability as well as this mask, right? ‘I’m an adult, I’m a grownup. I’ve got my life under control. I’m buying $8 lattes. I can definitely afford it.’ She can’t. She definitely can’t. And so when we saw Ji-young, she brought all of that… This incredible vulnerability that was so beautiful and tender and we just thought, ‘God, that’s it. That’s what we need.’ ”

Wang was also willing to take a risk on Blue, who’s been primarily been cast in comedies, in a challenging dramatic role. “I worked with Aquafina on The Farewell . I love comedic actors and I often feel like that’s the range that you need. You need that lightness. You need someone who has great timing, and Hillary’s a tough role, not the two women who are directly connected with the incident of the main mystery. And so we needed someone who could bring that a really dynamic presence to the screen as the person who isn’t directly affected, but her life is still turned upside down by this incident.”

Kidman explained that along with her passion for the particular story Expats was telling, she was gratified by the opportunity the project provided to push other talent forward. “I’m happy to do it, grateful to have the ability to be supported doing it, and to have whatever success I’ve had to then be able to go, ‘Okay, how do we now help others to have the light shine on them so that they can have extraordinary paths and careers?’ ” she said. “That’s just one of the things that I’m really committed to.”
