A Closer Look at the $300 Million Superyacht Al Said

Have you ever wished that you could own your very own superyacht? Well, how about one that's the 7th longest yacht in the entire world and accommodates more guests and even many more professional crew members than almost all of the other yachts in the world ? In fact, you might not even have enough friends on earth to fill this massive yacht! And, all you have to be is a Sultan to be able to afford it! Then, you could travel the oceans of the world in comfort and luxury and never have to go back home and live the regular life! Hmm, we can certainly dream about the good life, can't we?

Built by Lurssen

According to Superyacht Times , the motor yacht Al Said was ordered in 2006 and then it was built by Lurssen . Her code name at that time was Project Sunflower during her construction. Once completed, she was named after her very wealthy owner. She's one of the largest superyachts in the world , especially when measured by volume. She accommodates an amazing 65 guests plus 140 crew members and was designed by world-renowned yacht designer, Espen Oeino. She's powered by two MTU marine engines that create a total of 22,000 horsepower for a cruising speed of 14 knots.

Delivered in 2008

The superyacht Al Said was delivered in 2008 to the Sultan of Oman. She replaced a smaller mega- yacht that, at one time, had the exact same name. At an amazing 155m, she has six exceptionally large decks and both her exterior and interior are quite striking. They were designed by Espen Oeino International. That's actually the same company responsible for the designing of the 127m mega-yacht called Octopus.

A Steel Hull & 25 Knots to Boot!

The Al Said sports a steel hull and an aluminum superstructure. She has a beam of 24m (78.74ft) and a draft of 5.20m (17.06ft). This is a superyacht that's capable of doing 25 knots flat-out and also has a cruising speed of 22 knots.

Lots of Guests & Crew

According to reports, this superyacht is capable of accommodating up to 70 guests and 154 professional crewmembers for ensuring the ultimate in relaxed luxury yacht experiences for all guests onboard. She also features a massive concert room that accommodates an entire 50-piece orchestra! Now, that's something you probably won't find on any other superyacht!

Based in Muscat

According to the Robb Report , the majority of the time, the Royal Yacht Al Said will be based in the Sultan Qaboos Port, which is near Muscat. When the royal yacht does travel anywhere, she does so with an escort and that escort is the Oman Navy. Now, how many yachts do you know of that have their own royal Navy escort?

About the Owner

The owner of the Royal Yacht Al Said is the Sultan of Oman (and all of its Dependencies) after rising to power by overthrowing his own father, Said bin Taimur during a 1970 palace coup. (What a nice guy, right?) He's also the 14th-generation descendant of the Al Bu Sa'idi dynasty's founder. Oman (aka the Sultanate of Oman) is, of course, an Arab country in the Middle East that lies on the southeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula as well as on the Persian Gulf. As you may have already guessed, it's an absolute monarchy, which was once known as the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman. It also once included portions of what is now the United Arab Emirates and certain parts of Pakistan. This also a country with very close ties to Saudi Arabia, often functioning as an impartial mediator between Saudi Arabia and countries like Qatar and Iran or Qatar. In addition, the country has a Royal Military Academy that is really highly-regarded.

The Sultan's full title is Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said and, he also owns eight palaces and three luxury yachts. Besides the Al Said, he also owns the Loalat al Behar and the Fulk al Salamah. The Loaloat Al Behar was the prior Al Said, which was a gift to the Ministry of Tourism of Oman and has been recently refitted and repainted. The Fulk Al Salamah Yacht functions as a support vessel for the Royal Yacht Al Said. She was built in Italy at the Mariotti shipyard and delivered in 2016. At 150 meter (492 ft) she's actually almost as big overall as the yacht Al Said and one of the largest superyachts worldwide.

Other Royal Toys

Sultan Qaboos bin Said al Said is also the owner of a Boeing 747 private jumbo jet, (registration A4O-OMN), which was built in 2001. In addition, he owns another 747 that was built in 2012 (registration A4O-HMS). However, since it wasn't painted with the ‘royal colors’, he mainly uses his older jet.

Sultan of Oman- Net Worth

Sultan Qaboos al Said's net worth is estimated to be in excess of US$ 1 billion. (Not bad.)

Not For Charter

This yacht is not for charter. However, if you would like to see this yacht's current location in real-time, just go to this site. That way, you could live vicariously thru the Sultan, his guests, and crew members. Sure, it would be better to be there but tracking its location just might have to suffice for today.

Sultan Haitham’s Majestic Visit to Musandam: A Glimpse into Oman’s Leadership and Development

Khaled Al Ahmad

Watan-Omani social media users have circulated a video showing the arrival of the Sultan of the country, Haitham bin Tariq, aboard a luxurious royal yacht to the governorate of Musandam in the far north of the country.

This visit marks Haitham bin Tariq’s first to the governorate since assuming the country’s leadership in 2020, succeeding the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

The Omani News Agency reported that Sultan Haitham bin Tariq arrived in Musandam on Sunday for a tour to inspect the developmental, social, and economic aspects up close. He also met with the elders, dignitaries, members of the Omani Council, and municipal council members.

Sultan Haitham’s Visit to Musandam

According to the agency, this visit will lead to the implementation of several projects, including the Dibba-Lima-Khasab road and the new Musandam airport project to be located in the Wilayat of Khasab. Additionally, residential neighborhoods and city centers in the governorate will be developed.

In the circulated video captured by an Omani with his phone camera, several small boats carrying the flags of Oman and images of Sultan Haitham surrounded the luxurious royal yacht upon its arrival at the shores of Musandam.

The Omani Sultan appeared standing on the back of the yacht, waving his hand to the Omani people and greeting them. In another scene, Omani people in traditional attire were seen singing folk songs welcoming the Sultan, while artists played drums on the beach. Another artistic group performed dances and folk songs at the Musandam port square to welcome Sultan Haitham.

In a subsequent scene, Haitham bin Tariq was seen riding in a black Sultanate car, waving to Omanis through its windows. The car was surrounded by Omani police cars on a road where dozens of people and police personnel gathered.

Children in colorful attire were also seen waving the Sultanate flag, chanting national songs, and celebrating the arrival of Sultan Haitham.

The Sultan’s yacht, which transported Haitham, is one of the Sultanate’s support vessels, built by the Italian company Mariotti Yachts under the orders of the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said. This luxurious yacht, specifically crafted for Sultan Qaboos, is ranked among the top 10 most expensive yachts in the world, with a price reaching millions of dollars.

Middle Eastern promise: The Arabian Peninsula's superyacht hotspots

With UNESCO sites, cutting-edge museums and a wealth of fine restaurants, the Arabian Peninsula is no cultural desert. Sophia Wilson discovers why the Middle East is becoming a superyacht hotspot

OMAN: For sailing enthusiasts and Lawrence of Arabia fantasists

A land of rugged mountain ranges, rolling deserts and aquamarine seas, Oman has a charisma born of achingly romantic natural phenomena. The sultanate may share a border with the UAE but its rich heritage, friendly culture and a topography reminiscent of Mars give it a very different feel.

Sultan Qaboos of Oman is well aware of the country’s beauty from the water – he owns 155 metre Al Said , moored in Muscat’s Port Sultan Qaboos. But superyachts are only just starting to explore its wild charms – recent visitors include 53.6 metre explorer yacht Itasca and 119 metre Motor Yacht A .

With a rich maritime heritage, Oman is the favourite sailing destination in the Arabian Gulf,” says Firas Matraji, CEO of Barr Al Jissah resort, which is home to the Al Mina Marina. “The sultanate’s coastline stretches for 1,700 kilometres and has established itself as a regular destination on the global sailing route.” This status was confirmed when it became the first country in the Middle East to host the America’s Cup World Series in 2016.

Carved into the coastline just north of Muscat, Barr Al Jissah is hoping to capitalise on the increase of both sailing and motor yacht visitors and a private yacht club is under construction. With the ability to accommodate yachts of any size within the marina and its protected bay, the site is also home to three Shangri-La hotels, has 22 dining options and the first L’Occitane Spa in the region.

Matraji recommends superyacht visitors head to the nine UNESCO-protected Daymaniyat Islands. “Their large unspoiled reefs host an unparalleled wealth of sea life in the region,” he says. “With its year-round warm waters, Oman is one of the world’s best dive destinations.”

Further north, the Musandam peninsula offers fjord scenery that rivals Norway’s, with mountains rising directly from the sea to more than 2,000 metres. The strategic location of its natural harbour means it has been a trading hub with Persia, India, Africa and the wider world for centuries and its waters are still home to traditional wooden dhows.

As well as its marine offering, Oman’s landscapes afford plenty of thrilling inland adventures – including getting a taste of the Bedouin lifestyle or “dune bashing” (a rollercoaster ride in SUVs across the moving desert terrain) in the Wahiba Sands and an incredible range of hiking in the Al Hajar Mountains. Jebel Shams, Oman’s highest mountain, is famed for its view of the Wadi Ghul, known as the Grand Canyon of Oman. Accessible by 4x4 you can hike the Balcony Walk, which takes approximately three hours, for the most stunning views.

DUBAI: For glamour hunters and lovers of luxury

The ultra-modern skyscrapers and sparkling shopping malls of the City of Gold provoke something of a Marmite reaction, but the UAE’s most developed emirate has plenty to offer superyachts. “This year we have witnessed many famed megayachts dropping anchor in this region,” says Mahmoud Itani, marketing manager for Gulf Craft. “Coming from the Med after the season and heading to South East Asia , superyacht owners have been recently interested in the Gulf region as another superyacht destination.”

Itani credits this influx to events such as the Dubai International Boat Show, but also to ongoing improvements in infrastructure – including Dubai Harbour, which will be the largest marina in the Middle East and North Africa region upon completion. Captain Graeme Hampson of 73 metre Titania is equally impressed with its superyacht credentials. “What surprised me most about Dubai as a destination is the fact that it has first-class marinas and a host of onshore activities that can cater to anyone’s taste,” he says.

Experiencing Dubai by superyacht allows a completely different perspective on the city. You can sail around the stylised artificial island The Palm, see the cityscape illuminated from the shore or arrive in style at hangouts such as the Cove Beach. “This is Dubai’s hidden gem of beach clubs – if you didn’t know it was there, you wouldn’t see it,” says Aneel Kesry, from JLS Yacht & Charter Services Company. “As a result, the vibe is exclusive and secluded. It has beautiful views of the Arabian Gulf and is a great spot for chilled sundowners that stretch into the evening.”

Superyachts might be relatively new to the party but Dubai’s luxury hotel offering is second to none – led, of course, by Dubai Holding’s Jumeirah Group. The 321 metre tall Burj Al Arab, which resembles the sail of a ship, is a symbol of modern Dubai. Situated on an artificial island it is connected by a bridge back to the mainland and its nearest neighbour is, conveniently, the Jumeirah Beach Hotel Marina. The hotel is the ultimate place not just to relax, but to be seen to relax, so take the lift up from its golden atrium to the opulent Talise Spa on its 18th floor. At more than 150 metres up, its glass-fronted treatment rooms offer views of jet skis doing donuts in the bay below. Opt for the two-hour wave treatment, which consists of rub, massage and warming wrap treatment that will leave you feeling ready to take on anything that Dubai has to throw at you.

If you fancy some time on shore there are plenty of hotel rooms to rival any master cabin, such as the Malakiya Villas located within the waterways of Jumeirah’s Madinat property. Inspired by the courtyard summer houses of old Arabia they have a 24-hour butler service and private plunge pools. The hotel itself may not be as tall as the Burj Al Arab but it is just as glamorous, with statues of golden prancing horses, crystal chandeliers and glittering vases overflowing with fresh flowers.

ABU DHABI: For speed seekers and culture vultures

Abu Dhabi is more down to earth than Dubai – both literally (it has fewer skyscrapers and more green spaces) and in its attitude – and this has a certain allure for visitors. “As Abu Dhabi has further established itself as a destination, yacht owners have begun to turn to it over other destinations in the region, seeking a slightly quieter pace of life and a more authentic Middle East experience,” says Saeed Al Dhaheri, from Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism.

The biggest new string to the emirate’s bow is the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which opened in November. Located in the Saadiyat Island Cultural District, it is the largest art museum in the Arabian Peninsula, consisting of 50 white stone buildings, housing 23 galleries holding 600 works of art. This September, Leonardo da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi, the world’s most expensive painting, will be added to the display. “Bringing the Louvre brand to Abu Dhabi was our first big step towards placing the emirate on the cultural map and marks the beginning of our journey which will see the Guggenheim and Zayed National Museum open in future years,” says Al Dhaheri.

As well as the Louvre, the other draw for superyachts has been the addition of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to the Formula One calendar. Centred around Yas Marina, which can accommodate boats up to 150 metres, yachts attending have included 72 metre Serenity, 77 metre Silver Fast and 69.1 metre Saluzi.

Visitors wanting to be closer to the city centre can make use of Zayed Port and moor next to the largest superyacht in the world, Azzam . At the other end of the pedestrianised cornice, the Etihad Towers are a modern landmark within walking distance of sprawling Presidential Palace. For the best view of its manicured lawns and endless domes – and, in fact, the entire city – head to the Observation Deck at 300. Located on the 74th floor, it provides 360-degree views and serves a traditional high tea, which is best enjoyed at sunset. If you are looking for something more substantial then Ray’s Grill, in the opposing tower, is a meat lover’s paradise with a choice of cattle from producers in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Ireland, Argentina and the US. There is also a gin trolley mixologist and a mustard connoisseur to suggest the perfect accompaniment, and the blue cheese broccoli side dish is enough to persuade anyone to eat vegetables.

Those seeking a less frenetic vibe should head out to Saadiyat Island, where Jumeirah’s latest hotel is set to open this November. With a nine- kilometre sparkling white beach that would rival any in the Caribbean, it’s a breeding ground for hawksbill sea turtles, and the beach has to be accessed via pedestrian walkways to prevent any chance of them being disturbed.

FIVE ARABIAN NIGHTS Destinology offers a five-night twin centre stay from £2,775 per person, based on two sharing two nights half board at the Jumeirah at Etihad Towers and three nights at Madinat Jumeirah Mina A’Salam, including return Emirates flights from Heathrow and private UK and Dubai transfers, as well as one free Dubai city tour. destinology.co.uk
