L’evoluzione delle prue: ieri slanciate, oggi dritte

Quando passeggiamo lungo le banchine di un porto possiamo osservare soprattutto le poppe delle barche ormeggiate. ma anche la prua di uno scafo conta parecchio: non solo caratterizza l’estetica di uno scafo, ma è una parte essenziale che determina il modo di navigare dell’imbarcazione. vediamo come e perché si è evoluta questa parte degli scafi..

Naturalmente, così come le appendici o l’armo velico, anche le prue delle barche da crociera hanno conosciuto nel tempo una grande evoluzione dettata da mode, tendenze del design e filosofie progettuali. Tanto è vero che spesso basta guardare la prua di una barca a vela per determinarne con precisione il periodo storico. Ma quali sono i fattori che hanno determinato il cambiamento di stile e forma delle prue?

Per molti anni le barche a vela sono state caratterizzate dalle prue slanciate, oggi ormai praticamente scomparse. La prua slanciata era molto bella esteticamente ma penalizzava in maniera consistente gli spazi interni, in particolare la cabina di prua, il bagno o la cala vele. Inoltre gli slanci di prua non davano vantaggi decisivi in termini di qualità della navigazione. Oltre a questi parametri a contribuire in maniera decisiva all’evoluzione delle prue delle barche da crociera è stato in realtà il mondo delle regate, da sempre laboratorio di soluzioni che con il tempo dagli scafi da regata finiscono per influenzare anche le barche di serie, meno tirate ma al tempo stesso sempre a caccia di prestazioni migliori. Spesso poi i grandi progettisti di barche da regata sono gli stessi ingaggiati dai cantieri più importanti di barche da crociera in serie per cui si avvia una sorta di processo osmotico tra i due mondi.

L’influenza delle regate sui progettisti

Sono stati quindi i regolamenti di regata a modellare in generale le forme della barche e con esse le prue, comprese quelle dei cabinati da crociera. Riguardo ai regolamenti di regata e alla loro influenza sul mondo del design della cantieristica di serie, si possono distinguere tre grandi periodi: il RORC, lo IOR e la fase IMS-ORC.

Il RORC, regolamento sviluppato in Inghilterra, parte dal 1945 e arriva fino alla fine degli Anni 60 . Lo IOR nasce invece nel 1968 e prosegue fino al 1998. Infine c’è il periodo IMS-ORC che arriva fino ai giorni attuali. Ognuna di questa fasi ha espresso un certo tipo di forme di scafo, appendici e di piani velici, prue comprese, risposte progettuali scaturite dallo studio che i progettisti facevano dei regolamenti in vigore.

Per ogni regolamento una prua diversa

Nel periodo RORC le barche avevano per lo più la chiglia lunga e le prue degli scafi avevano linee leggermente tondeggianti che proseguivano senza interruzione fino alla chiglia stessa. Nel periodo IOR invece la lunghezza di stazza degli scafi veniva calcolata con una formula che teneva in considerazione anche la lunghezza massima. Quindi le prue con volumi poco sottili o rette erano penalizzate perché facevano crescere la lunghezza di stazza penalizzando il rating. La soluzione per non penalizzare la barca era allora quella di disegnare prue con uscite molto slanciate. Da qui sono nate le poppe strette e alte e le prue slanciate delle barche IOR.

Con i regolamenti di regata IMS e ORC la lunghezza di stazza diventa quella effettiva e il regolamento premia mediamente le barche con una ridotta lunghezza al galleggiamento. Inizia allora il fenomeno delle prue dritte che in navigazione immergono la porzione di scafo che prima era scoperta. Questa soluzione per gli scafi da crociera viene adottata con una piccola variazione: la prua cioè resta dritta ma c’è una maggiore lunghezza al galleggiamento anche per avere migliori prestazioni in navigazione. Ancora oggi la prua verticale importata dalle regate IMS e ORC la vediamo ormai consolidata e diffusa anche su cabinati da crociera pura perché i progettisti massimizzano la lunghezza al galleggiamento che vuole dire prestazioni ma al tempo stesso si spostano i volumi fino alle estremità aumentando la vivibilità interna per avere barche più comode e confortevoli.

Le ultime tendenze: prue ad alto volume

Le ultime tendenze progettuali per la crociera vedono i cabinati di oggi avere prue importanti con volumi generosi. Questi permettono di avere una maggiore spinta positiva rispetto alle prue sottili, ma anche a ridurre il problema dell’ingavonamento in condizioni di andature portanti con mare in poppa. Naturalmente una barca con una prua dai volumi potenti dovrà anche essere proporzionalmente larga e alta sull’acqua, al fine di avere un’estetica omogenea. Conseguentemente ai volumi delle prue più consistenti, cambiano anche i bordi liberi: la tendenza oggi è di aumentarli rispetto a valori più convenzionali, con il vantaggio di avere più spazio disponibile per gli interni ma soprattutto una barca più asciutta e una piacevole sensazione di essere alti sull’acqua navigando, che da una certa sicurezza. A volte all’estrema prua compaiono anche dei piccoli scalini, chiamati “redan”, ovvero degli angoli a spigolo che servono a deviare il flusso dell’acqua e permettono di avere così un ponte più asciutto, una scelta che in coppia con volumi potenti ci da una barca decisamente confortevole quando il vento e l’onda salgono.

Prue rovesciate, più performanti

Infine molti cabinati moderni presentano le cosiddette prue rovesciate. La prua rovesciata, ossia inclinata al contrario offre una minore resistenza all’impatto con l’acqua. Oltre a una motivazione fisico-scientifica c’è poi una ragione estetica: qualsiasi linea verticale da un effetto ottico di spiombamento laterale; per evitarlo si sceglie una linea non verticale e, non volendo tornare agli slanci dell’era IOR, il design si è orientato in chiave più moderna verso le prue rovesciate. Le prue così disegnate poi permettono anche al progettista di caratterizzare la barca come segno grafico, per dare una sua risposta di stile e di riconoscibilità. Una caratteristica questa che negli ultimi tempi sta influenzando anche le barche a motore.

E infine anche il mondo delle sportive, quelle slegate dai regolamenti a rating, sta esplorando nuove frontiere. L’ultimissima tendenza in rapida espansione è quella delle svasature del ponte. Ovvero a prua il ponte e le murate non sono più retti ma hanno una più o meno leggera svasatura negativa. I motivi di questa soluzione sono strettamente aerodinamici: rispetto a una superficie retta quella svasata offre una minore resistenza e al tempo stesso scarica minori turbolenze sulle vele di prua. In definitiva il mondo del design è in continua evoluzione, su più direttrici, prepariamoci a vedere presto una nuova generazione di prue e a una continua evoluzione delle forme

DESIGN ESTERNO

Felice connubio di linee classiche e moderne caratterizzato da una prua dritta e sottile che offre ampi spazi a prua, e un baglio di 5 m molto appoppato. Il First 53 mostra fin da subito un ottimo comportamento marino. Il pozzetto è stato attentamente studiato affinché nulla ostacoli il passaggio verso prua: manovre vicino alla doppia timoneria con un comodo accesso ai passavanti. Spazio interamente dedicato al relax vicino al tambuccio. La tuga slanciata conferisce uno stile raffinato, la coperta flush un look moderno. Grazie al potente piano velico perfettamente manovrabile con equipaggio ridotto, un albero e un’attrezzatura di alta gamma, il First 53 marca una nuova era.

DESIGN INTERNO

E’ il grande ritorno del legno lamellare, materiali nobili e finiture di pregio, su un fondo di paratie laccate e pagliolati in teck per gli interni del First 53 che non punta ad un design troppo moderno. Antirollio e tientibene nonchè diversi stivaggi ben pensati, completano l’allestimento che dispone di tre cabine doppie e due bagni. La principale innovazione risiede nell’angolo salotto/relax dotato di un divano con tavolino basso, separato dalla zona cucina dotata di un tavolo per mangiare. L’insieme è luminoso, areato e comunica facilmente con l’esterno tramite una discesa facile e intuitiva.

VIVERE IL MARE, AVVICINARSI ALL’ORIZZONTE…

First prima di tutto, il First 53 risponde al preciso obiettivo di essere il nuovo punto di riferimento come barca a vela da crociera veloce e di lusso. Ci sono voluti due anni di lavoro affinché l’eccellenza toccasse l’acqua e potesse rispondere alle richieste degli armatori più esigenti in termini di emozioni al timone, velocità e vita a bordo in ormeggio.

L’interno del First 53 si innova con un grande divano e un tavolino basso. Per rispondere alla richiesta di un nuovo modo di navigare, non troviamo più il grande tavolo del quadrato, ma due spazi ben distinti e più pratici:  lo spazio relax e lo spazio pranzo.

La fluidità degli spostamenti è stato il cavallo di battaglia del designer Lorenzo Argento sia tra le timonerie, che per la disposizione dei winch di manovra oltre che per l’accesso in coperta. Lo specchio di poppa apribile si trasforma in piattaforma da bagno, scoprendo un garage che permette di accogliere con semplicità un tender di 2,40 m.

Emozioni da brividi

Per un massimo di emozioni al timone, l’equilibrio sotto vela e l’equilibrio dei pesi sono stati il il filo conduttore durante la concezione della barca. Il centro di galleggiamento, per esempio, é allineato al centro velico. Prua dritta e ampia, baglio appoppato, pescaggio di 2,50 m o 3 m (con bulbo in piombo), doppie pale del timone per controllare perfettamente questa carena vivace, il First 53 offre tutti i punti forti per uno scafo che solca miglia a tutta velocità.

Barca connessa

L’applicazione mobile Seanapps  e la sua unità presente a bordo permettono di monitorare dal proprio smartphone lo stato dei diversi sistemi della barca (livello delle batterie, del carburante e dei serbatoi d’acqua, pianificazione delle operazioni di manutenzione), oltre che pianificare i propri itinerari o fare il punto sulla navigazione.

A Real “Blue Water Cruiser”

Born from the collaboration of H3O with designer and navigator Pierpaolo Ballerini, this sailing yacht was developed to travel long distances in total independence. The hull is designed for experienced users with great sailing capabilities. The Explorer 46 is the result of extensive research in all aspects of a sailing yacht (hull, deck, rigging, and interior) in order to successfully combine the historical idea of sailing without limits with new technologies and advanced materials.     The hull design is based on two fundamental principles: to maintain a consistence cruising speed and, a smooth and comfortable journey in any weather condition. This yacht was not conceived for extreme performance but was made to provide the owner with the ability to sail in all weather conditions while still maintaining a certain standard of comfort. In line with this objective, rigging and deck were designed to have a consistent level of performance especially the Code 0, Staysail and self-tacking Jib. Thus, allowing all the sails to be prompt and ready to sail in all conditions.     The Explorer 46 features a canting keel, twin helm stations, a well-protected and deep cockpit and an original asymmetric design. A fifth winch is present in a central position allowing the helmsman to assist in the sailing manoeuvres. The presence of the roll-bar allows the cockpit to be free from the mainsheet and thus removing the need for a Track.   INTERIOR LAYOUT: Two options are provided, with either two or three cabins with two bathrooms. The master cabin is located at the bow  a third cabin is located in the aft, on the starboard side, with the ability to accommodate two bunk beds. Ci siamo ormai abituati a yacht di misura straordinaria e abbiamo perso, con la consuetudine, l’emozione e l’ammirazione che invece dovrebbero accompagnare il varo di ciascuno di questi crogioli di creatività, tecnologia, ingegneria e ingegno umano. Nel caso specifico di Stella Maris, linee esterne eleganti e moderne e interni sofisticati vestono una “nave” dotata di impiantistica e soluzioni tecniche all’avanguardia. Il cantiere toscano ha d’altra parte basato la propria attività sull’eccellenza degli standard costruttivi e le specifiche tecniche degli yacht varati finora, cioè i due 62 metri RoMa e Candy Scape II e il 72 metri Stella Maris, ne sono una chiara dimostrazione. Di pari livello è la progettazione delle linee esterne di tutti gli yacht targati VSY che è stata affidata a Espen Øino, uno dei grandi nomi dello yacht design a livello internazionale che ha firmato lo styling di Stella Maris e, in collaborazione con Laurent Giles Naval Architects, ne ha disegnato l’efficiente architettura navale.

Gli esterni Le linee pulite, spigolose conferiscono al grande yacht una personalità austera enfatizzata dal grigio “canna di fucile” (DuPont Metallic Grey) dell’imponente scafo. Sulla fiancata del ponte principale si apre una serie di vetrate verticali sottolineate, sul ponte inferiore, da piccoli oblò tondi che individuano gli alloggi dell’equipaggio. Per sfruttare al massimo la larghezza dello scafo, il ponte principale ha una configurazione a tutta larghezza per oltre metà della sua estensione e l’alta fiancata grigia va ad incontrare la sovrastruttura bianca sul ponte superiore. Un elemento saliente del design esterno è senza dubbio l’helipad che occupa un ampio “terrazzo” poppiero sul ponte sole. Stella Maris è tra le pochissime unità da diporto (si contano sulle dita di una mano) dotate di helipad certificato HCA-MCA, quelle cioè che possono navigare con l’elicottero a bordo ed effettuare le operazioni di atterraggio e decollo sia di giorno che di notte. Ciò comporta una serie di dotazioni di sicurezza extra e richiede la predisposizione di rinforzi strutturali. L’Helideck Certification Agency (HCA), in particolare, ha richiesto delle modifiche al disegno della sovrastruttura poppiera e l’installazione di sprinkler per raffreddare tempestivamente le vetrate sottostanti l’helipad in caso di incendio. Øino non ha voluto mascherare l’elisuperficie ma ne ha enfatizzato la presenza come elemento stilistico e funzionale distintivo.

Osservando lo yacht dall’esterno, la compatta struttura è interrotta da ampie superfici vetrate , sia sul ponte principale sia sui ponti superiori, che anticipano la luminosità degli interni che verificheremo appena saliti a bordo. Realizzare superfici in vetro di dimensioni così grandi, a tutta altezza, ha richiesto un approfondito studio strutturale soprattutto nel caso delle vetrate del salone sul ponte superiore su cui poggia la piattaforma in grado di accogliere un elicottero da 2,9 tonnellate. Le grandi vetrate, tra l’altro, hanno un peso ben superiore a quello di una pari superficie in alluminio e hanno richiesto un’accurata connessione con la cornice metallica che le tiene in posizione e evita vibrazioni moleste e pericolose per l’integrità del vetro stesso. Le vetrate sono composte da una struttura a sandwich che garantisce una protezione dai raggi UV e abbatte la trasmissione del rumore e, poiché tra le priorità per garantire il comfort a bordo c’era quella di avere livelli di rumorosità molto bassi, il cantiere si è rivolto ad un esperto del settore, l’americano Joe Smullin di Soundown Corporation, per ottenere i migliori risultati possibili. Tornando un attimo a guardare lo yacht dall’esterno, è interessante notare come una sapiente composizione dei volumi dissimuli il layout interno articolato su livelli sfalsati che ottimizzano l’uso della volumetria disponibile. Ma saliamo a bordo di Stella Maris per scoprirne i segreti.

Gli interni Stella Maris, come accennavo, presenta un insolito layout distribuito su ponti/livelli sfalsati . Appena saliti a bordo, prima ancora di capire bene come si sviluppano le varie aree sociali e private, ci si rende conto della funzionale integrazione degli spazi che non sono penalizzati dalla presenza di corridoi e disimpegni. Fulcro della circolazione a bordo è la colonna centrale in vetro che contiene un ascensore che si ferma ad ogni livello (fa ben 7 fermate in tutto). Attorno all’ascensore si avvolge una scala a giorno in acciaio che, al di là del suo aspetto funzionale, costituisce un forte elemento architettonico e decorativo.

Tutte le aree comuni, sui vari piani, sono localizzate a poppa della colonna centrale e beneficiano della straordinaria altezza ottenuta dallo sfalsamento dei livelli calpestabili. In particolare i saloni sul ponte principale e quello superiore hanno soffitti alti 2,70m che, unitamente alle enormi finestrature, creano un effetto di straordinaria spaziosità.

Espen Øino è riuscito a creare un grande rapporto di continuità tra esterno e interno e infatti la presenza di grandi aperture che assicurassero una continuità visiva interno/esterno era tra i punti cardini del progetto sin dalle sue prime fasi di elaborazione. Il salone principale, affiancato nella sua sezione poppiera da due serre piene di piante rigogliose, arredato con pochi elementi di altezza contenuta e dalle tonalità pastello, è una sintesi dello spirito di leggerezza e luminosità che permea l’arredamento di tutti gli ambienti curato, con mano felice, da Michela Reverberi. Sfiorando un pulsante, due grandi porte a vetri scorrono silenziosamente e la zona conversazione e il bar si aprono sul pozzetto. L’area pranzo, al contrario, può essere circoscritta da pareti di vetro che, quando necessario, la separano dal resto del salone. Sul ponte superiore è invece la zona pranzo, collocata verso poppa del grande e luminoso ambiente, ad aprirsi sulla terrazza poppiera. Inutile sottolineare la delicatezza e complessità, sia a livello progettuale che costruttivo, di questi sofisticati sistemi di pannelli scorrevoli.

Allo stato attuale lo yacht è in grado di ospitare 12 persone , oltre agli armatori, ma quattro delle sei cabine ospiti hanno un terzo letto e la grande palestra sul bridge deck potrebbe lasciare spazio a due cabine Vip. E, a proposito di ospiti, a prua del ponte principale ci sono sei cabine a loro dedicate, quattro matrimoniali e due doppie, di dimensioni e finiture analoghe. Tutte sono illuminate dalle grandi finestre verticali che si aprono sulla fiancata e beneficiano della configurazione full-beam adottata in questa sezione della sovrastruttura.

La timoneria sta a prua del cosiddetto Bridge Deck dove si trovano anche un bel salone e una grande palestra. La distribuzione su livelli sfalsati ha consentito di realizzare, un mezzo ponte più in alto rispetto al Bridge Deck, un piano tutto dedicato all’appartamento armatoriale. Si arriva alla zona notte passando da un disimpegno dal quale si accede ad uno studio a dritta e, proseguendo verso prua si passa attraverso un vestibolo, che è anche dressing room, alla cui destra e sinistra si aprono due sontuosi bagni in marmo blu. A prua c’è la cabina armatoriale che gode di un magnifico panorama verso prua ed ha accesso diretto ad un ponte panoramico privato. Scendendo di parecchi livelli, si arriva al garage che rappresenta uno dei molteplici elementi innovativi presenti su questo grande yacht. Il piano del garage è quattro gradini più in basso rispetto al livello del beach club e della sala macchine che si trova più a prua.

Come mi ha spiegato Lorenzo Cerulli, Sales Manager del cantiere , durante la mia visita a bordo in una grigia giornata, questo locale è completamente stagno e, in caso di allagamento (fino ad 8 tonnellate d’acqua) può essere svuotato in soli tre minuti grazie alla presenza di quattro potenti pompe centrifughe. I tender vengono varati da due portelloni laterali lasciando libero un magnifico spazio, perfettamente rifinito in teak, che, unitamente alla piattaforma da bagno poppiera, si trasforma in un accogliente e spazioso soggiorno a livello del mare, un beach club in piena regola, dotato di sistema di condizionamento d’aria. Sempre Cerulli mi ha parlato del sofisticato sistema integrato che gestisce la strumentazione di navigazione, comunicazione e automazione fornito da Kongsberg, e del sistema audio/video che utilizza la fibra ottica. Oltre a velocizzare enormemente i tempi di reazione, la fibra ottica ha il vantaggio di essere facilmente installata e rimpiazzata in caso di necessità.

Una menzione a parte merita l’attenzione del cantiere costruttore per le problematiche relative al rispetto dell’ambiente . Qui il discorso si fa più ampio e coinvolge la politica ambientale adottata in cantiere. VSY ha aderito agli standard ISO 14001 che fissano parametri alquanto rigidi in materia di emissioni inquinanti nell’atmosfera e nei locali di lavoro, smaltimento degli scarti di lavorazione, ecc. VSY è anche stato il primo cantiere nautico a sottoscrivere il protocollo Wood Forever Pact che prevede l’utilizzo di legname di origine certificata, che cioè non sia ricavato dal taglio indiscriminato di foreste tropicali o protette.

Per quanto riguarda lo yacht, Stella Maris è dotata di un sistema di posizionamento dinamico (DPS) che evita di danneggiare i fondali in aree protette. Il sistema K-POS, è stato sviluppato in collaborazione con l’azienda norvegese Kongsberg e, agendo su bow e stern thruster, riesce a mantenere lo yacht in posizione con una precisione straordinaria, a meno di condizioni meteo particolarmente avverse. Altra dimostrazione dell’attenzione nei confronti dell’ambiente sono il sofisticato sistema di trattamento dei rifiuti e le marmitte catalitiche a doppio filtraggio applicate a motori e generatori. Significativo anche l’utilizzo del calore delle condotte dei gas di scarico per riscaldare l’acqua corrente e quella della piscina. Grazie alle sue “attenzioni” per l’ambiente lo yacht ha ottenuto la notazione “Environmental Protection” del Lloyd’s Register.

Experienced european owners brought together a top team of Dubois, Fitzroy and Tessier to produce their dream yacht: sleek, sophisticated and impressive under sail.

The push for a single level between bridge, saloon and cockpit, combined with ultra-sleek aesthetics, nudged the Dubois design team into new territory. “To get good visibility from the helmstations we had to work hard to lower the accommodation as much as possible, while keeping an open feeling” adds McKeon.

The interior, styled and drawn by Remi Tessier , features a combination of bleached timbers and white leather which results in clean modern lines and provides bright comfortable living areas.

Fitzroy Yachts Zefira

The sea trial was pubblished on Superyacht 31 – spring 2012

Zefira S/Y is one of those few yachts that became an attraction for yacht enthusiasts and professionals  well before she hit the water.

This yacht was designed and built with the experience and passion for sailing boats her owners demonstrated from the start as well as a naval engineering and a project design team from  Ed Dubois studio for the exterior, while Remi Tessier was responsible for all the interiors. Zefira was built in a yard which enjoys a  worldwide  reputation for the construction of large sailing yachts.

With such an opening introduction one can expect nothing less than something absolutely extraordinary, where the term used must be read in its best meaning to underscore something that has really nothing of the ordinary. We had the pleasure of talking with the owners who are currently sailing on their yacht after they had  carried out important work in the design phase with the project team to define specific guidelines and details.

Beyond the highly involving dialogue which ensued with flowing examples  of their own sailing experience and passion, we managed to grasp and better understand the idea behind the project which began with a seven metre sloop and  gradually developed in the course of the following 40 years  of which  many were spent at  sea. Putting words to emotion and feelings is never easy to do and  more so when they are other people’s. In this case however everything was a lot easier for us   thanks to our interviewee’s eloquent communicative capability.

The first point our attention was brought to was that Zefira is the largest sailing y

acht ever designed by Dubois with no fly bridge and built by Fitzroy Yachts in New Zealand.  This may strike our readers as a mere detail, but it is in fact one of the principal fundamentals outlining this project because it translates into flowing external lines and a unique profile when observed sideways on.

The choice  of doing without a fly bridge is somewhat unusual since up until  recently a “fly” had been widely accepted as  a run of the mill thing to have on a sailing yacht beyond a given size, but which nevertheless, Zefira is proud to do without giving cause for, among others ,  the following comment volunteered by some of the designers not involved in the project: “The world of sailing now stands  divided between before Zefira and after Zefira”.

Naturally enough this comment in particular is aimed at the yachts’ profile, which brings to a standstill what had become a consolidated practice on yachts this size. Aesthetics is principally  why the owners decided to do without the fly option as well as for practical reasons  they eloquently highlighted: without one  on a  50 metre sailing boat  there’s a complete total view of both what lies ahead up to the horizon and of the sail plan.

Moreover using a higher windswept and sun scorched horizontal plane rather than the main deck itself is by its very nature something destined to be exploited only sporadically and quite correctly in their opinion doesn’t justify having one.

The thought behind the whole project as the requests submitted to both designers and yard indicated,  were to enjoy a pure thorough bred for its performing lines and technical contents, capable of offering the sort of space and commodities expected when cruising extensively in all weather conditions. At a first glance the goal seems to have been easily achieved, but if  we then go into an in-depth analysis, the comments volunteered by project designers earlier seems surely appropriate. The husband and wife team (the owners) followed up on construction work from the initial stages to completion, working through the more important phases in close contact with the professional teams involved.

According to the owners the best part was witnessing the step by step progress of such an enterprise. We can understand the reasons why and genuinely  hope that in  the future such desire will generate the construction of other such extraordinary ships.

Several International prizes for design and technical contents have been awarded to Zefira. Dubois Naval Architects’ studio is proud of the recognitions bestowed since this is the largest sailing yacht project without a “fly” they’ve ever made so far and also for the passion and creativity expressed time and time again by the owners who incidentally had been the previous owners of another Dubois  project built by Alloy Yachts: Kokomo of London (now Nubero Blau). The challenge taken on by the studio was one that meant blending the huge experience acquired by the owners to innovative aesthetics, with a hull capable of delivering the sea-keeping qualities and performance requested.

The owners wished for a boat that could be another home from home: spacious, with a project design that looked ahead into the future. For this reason the design team was invited by the owners to pay them a visit and to take a look at their house to better understand what they wanted.

The choice of the yard was principally dictated by delivery times even if Fitzroy Yachts had been chosen also in function of preceding work carried out from Dubois projects.

Among some of the clever solutions highlighted by the owners in the course of our conversation we wish to mention the ease in steering they experienced and handling the yacht, of course aided by electronics and important data communication systems capable of monitoring and performing many of the required manoeuvres without hindering visibility.

The rig which is capable of carrying up to 3,000 square metres of canvass is per se a very interesting technical achievement inasmuch as it sports a 63.50 metre mast and can still be defined as being “light”. Obviously there’s a carbon fibre mast and boom, as well as fibre stays that have been purposely chosen to reduce weight high above the waterline which translates into less draught and better performance in breezes.

All of the choices adopted for Zefira mean she is very competitive on the race track even against racers and  in spite of the many commodities she carries with her.  As for the interiors and  much of the work put in by  Remi Tessier designer and the co-owner they enhanced an undoubted feeling of both tranquillity and elegance.

Gauged chromatic variety  meets the discerning eye as it takes in lighter and darker shades of handcrafted woodwork placed without ever causing excessive contrast, followed by polished steel elements and ad hoc lighting which enhances relaxation throughout every area. The space chosen to house each piece of furniture, is fruit of  careful study that has contributed into ensuring an uncompromised degree of comfort in the owners’ suite which is situated in the stern and in each of the three guest cabins as well.

One is a twin while the other two are double each one of them sports its own private bathroom. The crew quarters are situated in the bow area and with space for a lounge and crew mess room, which translates into staff’s quality living standards on board. The yacht’s convivial areas are also well distributed and large to ensure adequate privacy to guests and owners alike.

The electronics and navigation aids installed are the most modern on the market, with data and alarm control systems and displays in each of the two external command /control stations  as well as on the bridge deck as can be expected on a state of the art ship such as this. Dictated by reasons of space we have to limit our text to that which has so far been described even when the meeting with Zefira’s owners was so stimulating  we were prompted  to go further.

Powered by a Caterpillar C32 1450 bhp main engine and a Hundested variable pitch propeller, the propulsion system provides long range motor sailing abilities. The 56 meter ‘light weight’ carbon fiber sailing rig was supplied by Southern Spars, and the sails inventory provided by North Sails.

Ma solo in pochi sono riusciti ad accorgersi della sua presenza in porto, che è durata giusto una mattinata . “ Zefira ”, imbarcazione di 50 metri vincitrice dei prestigiosi riconoscimenti internazionali “Show boats Design Award 2011” e di “World Superyacht Awards 2011” come miglior yacht a vela del mondo per il 2011, è rimasta attraccata presso la banchina Bengasi del molo Cortese di Vibo Marina per poche ore, impegnata in attività di bunkeraggio. Costruita in Nuova Zelanda nei cantieri Fitzroy, ha uno scafo in alluminio e una trave con un raggio di quasi dieci metri. Gli interni sono stati disegnati da Remi Tessier e possono ospitare otto ospiti in quattro cabine.
