The best time to charter a yacht is probably either of the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October), each side of the main summer season, as the temperatures are the most comfortable, the wind lighter (yet reliable) and the onshore tourists have yet to arrive in their largest numbers.

Sailing Qualifications

To skipper a bareboat charter or flotilla yacht, you need to hold a practical sailing certificate equivalent to RYA Day Skipper Practical qualification or RYA International Certificate of Competence (ICC) . For charters in Greece, you must now have the ICC certificate . You must also be assisted by at least one competent crew member over the age of 18.

The port authorities in Greece are now insisting on one of the following practical certificates: RYA ICC (International Certificate of Competence), RYA Coastal, RYA Yachtmaster, ASA IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or the IYT (International Yacht Training) Passport. If you hold an RYA Day Skipper or ASA104 it will no longer be accepted and you need to obtain either an ICC or IPC from the corresponding issuing body (RYA or ASA). If your RYA Coastal/Yachtmaster or ASA105/106 certificate is more than 12 years old and does not have a photo ID, then we would also strongly advise applying for an ICC or IPC. If you are a member of the RYA or ASA, you may qualify for a discount or free certificate, otherwise, you will have to pay. The approximate cost is £50. Please use this link - RYA application for the ICC or ASA application for the IPC.

For charters in Croatia, Malta and the Canaries , at least one member of the crew or the skipper will also need a VHF licence .

RYA qualifications can be obtained by RYA sailing schools in the UK or alternatively choose from one of our overseas centres in Gibraltar, Greece or Turkey .

For  Seychelles,  the local authorities require an ICC for the skipper of a bareboat or flotilla yacht charter.

For Caribbean and Tropical charters, formal qualifications are not compulsory, however, you should be Day Skipper standard and be assisted by at least one competent crew . A brief sailing resume should be provided to outline your experience.

For Thailand A Day Skipper qualification is required as a minimum and you must have at least 3 weeks of skippering experience prior to your charter. A VHF qualification is compulsory.

If you don't hold the relevant qualifications then why not add a skipper ?

Sailing Levels

Winds force 2-3 (4-11 Knots)combined with generally shorter distances. Good for beginner or intermediate sailors. Line-of-sight navigation but basic knowledge of charts and ability to plot your position required.

Winds force 3-5 (7-21 Knots) with approximately 15-20nm per day. Intermediate experience required. Predominately line of sight navigation but an understanding of how to sail in open water.

Winds force 4-6 (11-27 Knots) with mileage of approximately 20nm+ per day. Ideal for experienced skippers looking to venture out to new destinations. Day skipper standard but with experienced crew would be recommended.

The Cyclades in the central Aegean Sea are the archetypal Greek islands, with charming whitewashed houses, windmills, churches with bright blue domes, ancient ruins and small tavernas with traditional food and wine.

DAY 2 : Folegrandos (30nm)

An enchanting little island in the Cyclades, with an authentic character and spectacular landscape. Th main harbour of Karavostasi is a traditional Greek fishing harbour.

DAY 3 : Santorini (21nm)

Santorini (also called Thira) was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in the world and what remains today is a submerged volcano and a caldera. Moor in the new marina and visit the stunning town of Thira overlooking the volcano crater to enjoy the sunset and local wine.

DAY 4 : Ios (15nm)

A "party island" famed for its nightlife but the harbour front is not noisy - most of the action is in the town, a steep walk up the hill. Apart from fun, the island has many beautiful beaches and peaceful anchorages.

DAY 5 : Naxos(40m)

The largest of the Cyclades islands with many sandy beaches. Naxos Town is the capital and main harbour and has a lovely waterfront with elegant Venetian architecture.

DAY 6 : Naoussa, Paros (28nm)

Paros is one of the most popular islands with lovely sandy beaches and crystal clear waters, traditional villages with whitewashed houses in narrow paved alleys contrasted with the many colourful bougainvilleas. Naoussa is a lovely anchorage with a cosmopolitan town and plenty of tavernas.

DAY 7 : Paroika (6nm)

A sailing holiday in the Cyclades will suit more experienced skippers as the passages between the islands can be exposed. In general the sailing conditions are more demanding than in other areas of Greece and involve longer passages.

The best times to sail in the Cyclades are May/June and September/October when you are less likely to be affected by the prevailing  meltemi  wind from the north which blows strongest in July and August at Force 5-6 and may reach Force 7-8. The  meltemi  can blow for 1 day or it can blow for 1 week continuously. In the Spring and Autumn the wind strength is less, around Force 3-4. Summer temperatures reach 25-27ºC.

There are many sailing itinerary options available in the Cyclades so you can plan your itinerary to best suit your sailing experience and the weather forecast. Your itinerary in this area must be flexible to cope with wind conditions, it is always a good idea to keep an extra day or so in hand to allow for adverse weather on the return leg.

We have rated this destination a 'Level 2-3'  (levels info)  and you will need an ICC qualification for bareboat charters in the Cyclades. You should be Coastal Skipper standard with plenty of skippering experience.

Getting There

Flights to athens.

British Airways , Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air run flights from Heathrow to Athens and Mykonos, easyJet operates from Gatwick. With daily flights you can add on a few days for a city break in Athens before or after your charter.

For onward travel to Paros: Olympic & Aegean have a 30 minute flight from Athens to Paros or the ferry from Pireaus Port in Athens to Paros runs daily and takes 4-5 hours.

The transfer time from Athens airport to Lavrion is approximately 40 minutes.

There are around 220 islands in the Cyclades, including the well-known islands of Santorini with its famous blue domed churches and Mykonos its party lifestyle.

There are two points in which to explore the Cyclades Islands from, Mykonos and Paros. We recommend starting in Paros as it's in the middle of the islands; an ideal starting point for a week or longer.

We would recommend this area of Greece is a destination for a keener sailor; with the meltimi blowing heavily during the summer season it's an exciting sailing ground for an experienced crew.

Where can we sail from?

You can sail from Lavrion on the mainland, Paros or Mykonos in the islands.

Lavrion (35 minutes from Athens airport) – a charming town harbour, can get bumpy when the wind picks up.

Paros (recommend flying into Mykonos then catching an hour long ferry to Paros) – the base is a bubbly little town quay right in the centre of Paros.

Mykonos (30 minutes from Mykonos airport) – a very rustic quay away from the action in Mykonos town with sparse facilities.

So, tell me what's the weather and wind like?

Without a doubt this is the windiest area in Greece to sail during the height of summer, July/August and also the beginning of September. This area is very open to the meltimi, which can blow a force 6 and above during the summer. We would only recommend this sailing ground to very experienced sailors, or if you were looking out of season in May or October.

This area of Greece is fairly far south, so enjoys a really warm summer with temperatures reaching up to 33 degrees in July and August. At the beginning and end of the season, May and October, you will find yourself bathing in temperatures in the early 20's.

Are there any hidden surprises?

The beauty of sailing in Greece is that you will often find there are no mooring fees when staying on a town quay. If the local port authorities do come along, and ask you to pay, then you can expect no more than €20 for a 38ft yacht.

How can I get there?

To reach Athens for the base in Lavrion you can fly with Aegean Airlines from Manchester and London Heathrow. British Airways also go from London Heathrow. Alternatively Ryanair fly from London Stanstead.

If choosing to sail from Paros or Mykonos, then EasyJet have direct flights to Mykonos from Manchester and London Gatwick. British Airways can also help you out with their flights from London Gatwick and London Heathrow.

CYCLADES, GREECE SAMPLE 14-DAY SAILING ITINERARY

Fly to athens & arrive and check-in in lavrion.

Lavrion is the gateway to the Cyclades islands. Situated on the southern tip of mainland Greece, it is only 45 minutes drive from Athens International Airport. Lavrion has several supermarkets – making it the perfect place to stock up and set sail from, and we can also arrange a supermarket delivery directly to your yacht. If you arrive early, head into Athens by taxi (just under 1hr) and explore some of the city’s historic sights. If you book an early check-in and are able to set sail by mid-afternoon, head to the Temple of Poseidon around the corner in Cape Sounion Bay or sail to the nearby island of Kea for the night if you have time.

Vourkari, Kea Island

Vourkari is situated to the north of Kea island. Well protected from the Meltemi wind, Vourkari has the feel of a small fishing town with lots of small fishing boats in its harbour. The island is home to some very good local restaurants specialising in fresh fish, lobster and other traditional dishes. If you’re looking for a quieter island destination for a night, then Kea is a great sailing destination, and for a really peaceful spot – try anchoring in the bay 100m away from the main port.

With the most famously beautiful beaches in the Cyclades, Andros is a must-see for swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing lovers. The highlight of this island is definitely its natural beauty! The stunning beaches are accompanied by beautiful nature walks and incredible views. This stop off is the perfect opportunity to enjoy dinner and drinks onboard and make the most of the sunset.

Mykonos town, Mykonos

On day four, enjoy a long relaxing sail from Andros to Mykonos. Mykonos is perhaps the most famous of the Cyclades islands and is known for its glamour, beautiful beaches and summer party atmosphere. Take your time getting here as you’ll have a full day on land tomorrow to take in all that Myknonos has to offer.

Full Day Mykonos

Located in the heart of the Cyclades, Mykonos offers something for everyone with golden beaches, diving, windsurfing and endless nightlife options for those who crave it. Little Venice is the place to be for beautiful waterfront dining, complete with sunset views.

After you’ve worn yourself out in buzzing and vibrant Mykonos, it’s time to get back to the peaceful side of a sailing holiday, with a dose of nature in Naoussa Bay on the island of Paros. Here you’ll find beautiful nature walking trails, quaint tavernas and a lighthouse with incredible views. This village is famous for its traditional Greek way of life so make the most of the opportunity to enjoy a bit of old Greece!

Ios will be a stand out stop-off for your entire group! Ios is known for its great food, historic sites, hiking trails and amazing views – there is something for everyone here! Hike up (or take a taxi!) to the town of Chora for dinner. Situated on the hilltop, high above the main town of Ios, Chora is the perfect spot to cast your gaze across the entire Cyclades islands and enjoy a bite to eat from one of the town’s many small restaurants.

It’s time to take a slightly longer sail south, to the famous island of Santorini! Known locally as ‘Thira’, this Cycladic island is best-known for its postcard-perfect whitewashed buildings with blue rooves and stunning cliff-top views across the volcanic caldera and towards the other Cyclades islands to the north. As the marina is a long way from the main town of Thira, we sometimes recommend staying on land for a night to fully experience Santorini.

Santorini Full Day

Enjoy a day exploring the iconic hills of Santorini! Fill your day with sightseeing, shopping, wine tasting and exploring the amazing architecture and history of this great island! End the day on a high with dinner on a candle-lit terrace whilst watching a spectacular sunset over the sea to the west of Thira.

Return to Ios

Santorini is the furthest south of the Cyclades islands, so from here you’ll need to retrace your path a little and head back north to the island of Ios. From windsurfing to exploring historic architecture, there’s something for everyone on Ios! If you didn’t visit Chora last time around, take a 10-minute taxi up there for dinner – it’s worth it for the view!

The largest island of the Cyclades, Naxos has an incredible amount to offer! The whitewashed village is cut into the lush green hillside and is teeming with restaurants, tavernas, shops and museums. Once you tire of the stunning beach, you’ll have plenty to do onshore!

There is more to Syros than just its beauty – it has a vibrant culture and is well known for its history and art – visitors should make time to explore the museums and galleries in Ermoupolis as well as the islands stunning beaches, caves and winding streets. Syros is generally known for its family beaches and quiet nights and is a great contrast to Mykonos and Ios.

Your final stop before returning to Lavrion will be the picturesque anchorage of Fikiadha Bay on the island of Kythnos. The bay is divided by a sandy spit, making this an excellent spot for protected swimming in the shallow water and taking the dinghy for some sundowners on the beach. Cook dinner onboard and enjoy watching the sunset in this stunning bay.

Return to Lavrion

It’s time to return your yacht back to base and sail to Lavrion. Take this opportunity to sail to Cape Sounion Bay (just south of Lavrion) and spend your final afternoon hiking up to the ancient Temple of Poseidon which sits impressively up on the hill above the bay. Or alternatively, make the most of your time onboard by simply enjoying the sheltered bay by sunbathing and paddleboarding for the afternoon before making the final 1-hour sail north, back to Lavrion. Spend a little time getting ready for your departure tomorrow, then head to a traditional Greek taverna for dinner in Lavrion.

Check-out is at 9am Saturday morning – depart the marina, head to Athens airport or begin your next adventure.

Kea is an inviting island near mainland Greece. Think magnificent sandy beaches protected from the wind, gin-clear water, ancient ruins, a lovely overall ambience, and you get the idea of what Kea is all about.

One of the main sights on the island, Ancient Karthea, can conveniently be reached by the sea, so you will be spared the lengthy walk to this impressive archaeological site. Here you’ll find temples to Apollo and Athena as well as a magnificent stone theatre that could accommodate almost one thousand people.

Another not-to-be-missed landmark is the famous figure of a lion, carved from local marble in the 6 th century BC, in the northeast of the island.

Dovecotes, steep rocks carpeted with lush green vegetation, 800 chapels and white picture-perfect beaches are all found in Tinos, in the centre of the Aegean Sea. The majority of the island’s visitors are Greek, because Tinos is the centre of pilgrimage for Greek Orthodox Christians.

Panayia Evanyelistria Cathedral, the main place of worship on the island, is well worth a visit for people of all religious affiliations. Tinos is also an island of artists. Some of great Greek painters and sculptors of the 19 th and 20 th centuries were from Tinos.

Beautiful beaches, crystal-clear water of the Aegean, lots of sunshine and refreshing summer winds make Tinos one of the most interesting destinations in the Cyclades.

Mykonos is the jewel in the Aegean’s crown and the pride of the Cyclades Islands . Trendy and cosmopolitan, with its signature windmills, Mykonos is extremely popular with the international intellectual elite and bohemian circles. People flock here for stupendous beaches, a dizzying array of clubs and bars, the biggest open-air Super Paradise, all-night parties and world-famous DJs. The charms of Mykonos are seldom found beyond the Mediterranean Sea.

Near Mykonos there is the much quieter island of Delos, also an archaeological site and open-air museum. The legendary birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, this sacred site on the Aegean is now uninhabited and open to visitors. It takes several hours to have a comprehensive tour of Delos, but those hours will be very rewarding, leaving behind lingering impressions of this unique location.

In the museum you’ll find one of the finest collections of ancient Greek sculptures, as well as artefacts found around the island during excavations. Delos is an interesting stopover for anyone, not just culture and history buffs. Its enchanting and mystical energy makes it a significant point of interest in the Cyclades .

Paros , charming and idyllic, was named after the leader of the Arcadians who arrived here in the 10 th century BC. Its favourable location – Naxos, Ios, and Mykonos are just a stone’s throw away – and impressive historical buildings, in conjunction with fabulous beaches and excellent conditions for windsurfing and other water sports, make it an increasingly popular vacation destination.

Planning your Paros stay, make sure you include Panagia Ekatondapiliani (Panagia Ekatontapiliani) Cathedral in your wanderings. This impressive place of worship dates to the times of Byzantine Empire. Impressive stonework, lovely frescoes, lemon trees in the yard – visiting this cathedral is relaxing and invigorating at the same time.

Ios is a mountainous island with numerous picturesque coves, amazing sandy beaches, countless churches, olive groves and balmy air. The centuries-old history of the island dates back to prehistoric times. According to the historian Herodotus, Homer was buried here (you can see his tomb in the north of the island, on the hilltop, complete with fabulous views).

The main attractions of the island include the dilapidated Venetian Castle and the ruins of the Hellenistic tower in the Plakoto district (check out Plakoto beach if you are in the area). Apart from all the history and architecture, Ios is a party island, with swanky clubs and trendy beach bars.

The star of the Cycladic islands is regarded by many as the “honeymoon capital” and the most spectacular of all the Greek Islands. Indeed, Santorini has been voted over and over as one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Marvel at the signature white and blue houses built right on the edge of the volcano in Tira. Take a walk along its white cobblestone streets, hunt for souvenirs, buy mementos or just watch the world go by in a stylish cafe.

In enchanting Oia you can admire the caldera and marvel at the unforgettable sunset over the bay. The romantic, seductive island of Santorini never gets old.

One of Louvre’s most prized possessions is the legendary statue of Venus de Milo, coming from the island of Milos. Now in Milos you can only see a replica exhibited in the Archaeological Museum, but there are many more reasons to visit the island than just this statue, famous as it may be.

Firstly, there are more beaches here than in any other Cycladic island , and the mind-blowing Sarakiniko Beach, with its lunar landscapes, white pumice formations and whimsical shapes, is the perfect setting for some great Instagram snaps.

Throw in scenic caves, lovely little villages and culinary delights and you get the general idea of what Milos is all about.

Herodotus mentioned that residents of Sifnos were prosperous people, because this island was known not only for its significant marble deposits (referred to as ‘sifnian stone’), but also for its gold and silver mines. The mines and quarries are no longer in use (you can only see ruins of them scattered around the island), but Sifnos is blessed with amazing beaches, scenic walking trails and the stunning beauty of its central regions.

Sifnos is also known for its ceramics (in the port settlement, Kamares, you’ll find a few shops selling ceramic pottery and souvenirs), numerous churches and regular religious festivals in summer.

Serifos is a small, easy-going island that never fails to impress visitors with its untamed wilderness and natural beauty. Serifos has not received as much publicity as some other Greek islands, so if you are looking for less touristy, more authentic atmosphere and isolated beaches that are never crowded, this island should be high on your list of priorities.

Hora, the capital, lies on the flank of a steep mountain, and if you go higher, to the mountain top, you’ll have a dazzling view of the old Kastro with views of Hora, the harbour, aquamarine sea and the island of Sifnos nearby.

Kythnos (Kithnos), with its whimsical craggy coastline, is an amazing island. Cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, churches and windmills create an aesthetically pleasing landscape for those who appreciate the idyllic, beguiling beauty of little Greek islands.

Katafyki Cave (or Katafiki Cave), where local residents hid during WWII, the two-sided Kolona beach (which is actually a spit connecting Kythnos with the island of Saint Luke) and old donkey paths turned into spectacular hiking trails would thrill those who love to move around exploring new places. Thermal springs and warm translucent sea attract those who enjoy frolicking in the water. In short, Kythnos has something enticing to offer to virtually anyone.

Athens is one of the oldest cities in the world, the capital of Greece and the cradle of democracy. The city was built around the Acropolis and Lycabettus hills dominating the flatland. According to legend, the hills were formed when Athena threw two rocks from the sky to help protect the city from enemies.

Walking around the centre of this megapolis, with so many historic buildings and ancient monuments, let your mind wander back to the Golden Age of Athens. Think back to when Pericles ordered the rebuilding of the Parthenon, one of the finest examples of Greek architecture.

The Island of Kea is a magnet for sailors as it provides some of the most difficult and interesting wind conditions around. The area between Kea and the Attica peninsular known as Cavo Doro is characterised by a melting pot of different wind streams, none of which are blowing in the same direction. Not only this but this same area is a mecca for divers and snorkelling enthusiasts as it features many shipwrecks – some believed to be the Greek ships that sunk on their way back from Troy, while others we know for certain such as the wreck of the Britannic, the sister ship to the mighty Titanic. If you are chartering in this area, guests can enjoy the Tale Festival, an event when fabulists from all over the world come and delight children and adults alike with their stories. 

Mykonos Greece

Yet Mykonos is not just known for its nightlife. There are wide expanses of white sandy beaches or the beautiful ‘Little Venice’ to relax in and soak up the sun. It is also known as a paradise for water sports with surfing and windsurfing favourites here. If you like to explore below the waves then be sure to head for the southeastern shore of the island to see Anna II, a shipwreck from 1995 that plays host to an array of marine life. The nearby island of Dragonisi with its caves and underwater rock formations also makes for a memorable dive!

Naousa Paros

Paros is considered one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean, its whitewashed houses and traditional cuisine that are indicative of the quiet, peaceful Greek atmosphere that can so easily revitalise the body and mind. Wander through the old Venetian port of Naoussa and take a table at Mario's where you can enjoy the deliciously sophisticated Mediterranean cuisine. Watch the sunset from the terrace of Sommoripa Consolato with beautiful views and fabulous cocktails, this is sure to be a night to remember.

Its sun-kissed beaches and white rock formations lure sailors in from all of the Aegean, especially to Kolymbíthres beach where the natural clay acts like your very own spa. Just off the coast, the stunning islet of Antíparos is well worth a visit, as is the 15th-century Venetian castle or the cave of Antíparos and its incredible stalagmite and stalactite formations. For diving enthusiasts, The Blue Dome make a fascinating dive with amazing lighting and beautiful anemones dotted about or at The Doors, where colourful corals and thriving sea life will amaze you.  

Naxos Greece

Naxos is the largest island in the Cyclades, famous for its high mountains, fertile valleys, traditional villages, Venetian castles and stunning beaches. While not as popular as it neighbour Mykonos, it has delightful and more relaxed feel of its own. Naxos is well known for its wine, and many cultural events and traditional fairs such as the ‘Naxos Festival’, the famous ‘Wine Festival’ or the ‘Fisherman’s Feast’.

For those who want to make a splash off the coast of Naxos, the island offers some amazing snorkelling and diving and the opportunity to explore countless reefs as well as two plane wrecks. The World War One German Araldo plane is only 11m deep and makes the perfect easy dive or a great spot to snorkel from above. For one of the greatest dives in the Mediterranean, be sure to visit Graviera Reef with its small caves and canyons filled with an abundance of marine life, this is an unforgettable dive.

Ios Greece

Ios is one of the many stunning islands that make up the Cyclades archipelago. It is a hilly island situated halfway between Naxos and Santorini and though just 18km long and 10km wide, boasts nearly 75km of beautiful white sandy beaches and turquoise coastlines for the charterer to enjoy. It has been inhabited since the early Cycladic period and is celebrated for its exceptional conservation efforts, particularly on Skarkos hill.

For a romantic evening meal and spectacular views of nearby islands, be sure to visit Ios Club Restaurant, located in Hora and offering everything from tasty cocktails to ana amazing Greek dining experience with a wonderfully sophisticated ambience.

Santorini Greece

One of the southernmost islands that make up the Cyclades, Santorini is well worth the visit and perhaps the most well known of the Greek Islands. The multi-coloured cliffs capped with white bungalows, spectacular sunsets, intriguing history, vibrant atmosphere and incredible beaches are a potent cocktail that draws guests from all over the world.
