The flagship of the classy Pardo range dreams of sun-drenched bays and warm evenings but is the Pardo 50 anything more than a big day boat?

The Italian port of Portopiccolo, close to Italy’s border with Slovenia, is a fascinating place. The name – literally, “small port” – is highly accurate given how the compact basin has been manipulated to contain a smattering of berths.

This former quarry is unrecognisable from its old self, now a pristine horseshoe of luxury residences and high-end shops and restaurants all linked by hidden tunnels and winding staircases. If you own one of the spectacular apartments clinging on to the craggy cliff face then why would you worry about buying a boat that you could sleep on overnight?

Enter the Pardo 50. This is the flagship of a range of T-top walkarounds from the same Forlí-based shipyard that builds Grand Soleil sailing yachts. The current Pardo range includes a 38-footer and a mid-range 43 .

The 50 is the ultimate expression of what Pardo stands for, with a main deck that, purely from gazing over it, transports you to a sun-drenched anchorage and coaxes visions of lazing about in the sun and diving off its enormous bathing platform into clear blue water.

Sadly, the weather on the day of our test paints quite the contrast to that vision, the threat of rain hanging heavy in the air and a gusty winds whipping up white tips in the bay. It is at least an opportunity to see if this big Italian is anything more than a fair weather friend.

To add to its challenge, because this is a group press event, we exit the berth with 11 people on board, 60% load in the 2,000-litre fuel tanks and 20% fresh water on board for good measure. It’s a good job that the test boat is fitted with the largest engine option, a pair of 600hp Volvo Penta IPS800s.

Still not huge amounts of power for a 53ft boat, but thanks to its resin-infused structure and carbon-fibre hardtop the Pardo 50’s displacement is less than 15 tonnes. The IPS800s are €128,000 more than the standard IPS600s however, while the mid-range IPS700 option splits the two and costs an additional €98,000 for the pair of 550hp engines.

Thoroughbred credentials

I slip behind the centrally mounted wheel as we sit bobbing around in the swell in the mouth of the port. A gyroscopic stabiliser is an option (costing €43,000) but the test boat doesn’t have it fitted so I ease the throttles forward to give us some respite from the wallowing.

Even with this number of people on board the silky smooth 7.7-litre diesels make light work of getting the boat over the hump and on to the plane. In fact, there isn’t really a noticeable hump at all as the hull passes its displacement speed and surges up into a 25-knot canter.

Though they are expensive, this is where the IPS800s show their worth because performance is effortless. They only top out at a lazy 3,000rpm but by then you’ll be doing just shy of 34 knots (and inevitably more with fewer bodies on board), which means the optimum fast cruising speed of 25 knots is quiet and refined because the engines aren’t being overworked.

Though eye-catching for their value, I imagine the IPS600s would be working pretty hard in these conditions. There’s an argument that few people will travel with 11 persons on board but note that this boat is rated RCD category A for 16 people. Given its popularity as a superyacht chase boat, it’s likely that the Pardo 50 will have to get used to carrying big numbers in comfort.

What’s most remarkable about driving the 50 is that, despite the openness of its decks, you feel so secure and well protected. From their spot in the middle of the boat the helmsman is especially cocooned thanks to the tall windscreen, deep bulwarks and a T-top overhead that feels as if it could take a direct hit from a mortar and remain intact.

The helm position is flanked by supportive bucket seats, the port side one mounted the far side of a central walkway, which leads through the split wetbar galley and aligns with the companionway steps.

The steering is as light as a feather and a little docile for a hull that feels this capable but because you’re so beautifully connected to the elements you get the added pleasure of hearing and feeling the rush of water off the hull as the boat powers through the water.

For wafting along and eating up big distances the Pardo 50 is the perfect tool, aided by that 2,000-litre fuel capacity, which means that even at top speed its range is over 250 miles with 20% in reserve. The driving environment is generally pretty good but the shiny GRP dash material produces a lot of reflections and shows light scratches far too easily in direct light; a matt finish would look classier and weather better too.

There’s more to enjoy away from the helm station where the sprawling deck spaces come into their own. With everything on one level it’s such an easy boat to move around, you can drift from the hydraulic bathing platform up the built-in steps to the cockpit and then sweep down broad side decks protected by those tall bulwarks.

The vast aft module balances a huge four-person sunpad with enough dining space for eight people if the table is extended. This is a natural place for guests to congregate. They can easily transition between the warmth of the sunpads and the dinette, which benefits from an extendable sun shade that rolls out from the aft end of the T-top.

Beneath the sunpad is a tender garage large enough to hold a Williams Minijet, leaving the aft platform free of obstructions.

Luxe living quarters

As standard, the split main deck galley comes with a two-ring hob, fridge and sink but the optional barbecue grill, drawer fridges mounted in the seat bases and ice maker are all worth having. The ice maker can be substituted for a coffee machine, naturalmente. Enjoying life on deck and eating and drinking with guests is at the core of this boat’s purpose, so it makes sense to spec the galley out as highly as possible.

You’re probably waiting for this review to head below decks and proclaim that, yes, the main deck is excellent, but that’s only because the interior is so horribly compromised. Well that’s simply not the case and the notion that boats like this are best used as villa accessories is a nonsense when you see the space, quality and comfort of the Pardo 50’s interior.

There’s well over 7ft of headroom in the saloon and even as the coachroof slopes towards the bow there is 6ft 2in over the master bed. There’s an argument that with so much space to play with Pardo could have fitted a bulkhead to close the bed off from the rest of the saloon but then you would lose what makes the interior feel so spacious. This and classy, light-hued timbers and plenty of skylights to draw natural light in.

The guest cabin amidships does have a door so guests have some privacy, and with direct access to the day heads they can access their own bathroom without going back into the saloon.

A hatch in the guest cabin connects to a small third cabin, which is meant to be a skipper’s cabin. It’s a bit claustrophobic for an adult but it would work well as an overspill for guests’ children. Pardo is a flexible shipyard, though, so if you want to use this space as storage it will accommodate such requests.

There’s nowhere to sit below, so if the weather deteriorates you have to stick it out on deck – but by the usual standards of a summer evening in the Med most will want to be on deck anyway, before retiring to an air-conditioned cabin.

As Portopiccolo’s rugged geography demonstrates, appearances can be deceptive. At first glance the Pardo 50 could be labelled as a cove queen, only used for sitting on anchor and looking pretty. On the contrary, because of the way it drives, its practical layout and an interior that makes extended cruising a real possibility it is a far more rounded proposition than initial impressions suggest.

Performing Pardo

The Pardo 50 is part of a new generation of mega-size walkaround yachts. Instead of a center-­console cabin with a ­portable toilet, there are two ­staterooms, two heads with showers and room for a civilized single-berth crew cabin with its own head.

Is this a long-range cruiser? Nope, but the Pardo 50 is built for long weekends at Bimini, Nantucket or Catalina Island. Even just for afternoon outings with family and friends, there are user-friendly features, including 30-inch-wide teak side decks that lead forward to a 7-foot-6-inch-wide sun pad with pillows, a removable overhead sunshade and pop-in speakers. The bow also features twin couches with a removable table, creating a perfect spot for relaxing after dropping the hidden, retractable anchor.

The teak-clad cockpit is the yacht’s social center, with a six-person wraparound ­settee and a teak table that rises and lowers on a chrome pedestal, and unfolds like origami from cocktail size to a dining table. Just forward is a console with a sink, a two-burner Schott induction cooktop and two fridge drawers.

Name Recognition

Pardo Yachts may be new to North American skippers, but it’s been in the European market since 1973. Cantiere del Pardo has built more than 4,000 vessels, including the Grand Soleil line of sailing yachts to 80 feet. Known for its willingness to customize a design, Pardo builds powerboats using vinylester resins with foam-filled carbon-fiber stringers, solid fiberglass bottoms and foam-cored topsides.

All of this is shaded by a carbon-fiber hardtop mounted on sweptback pylons that are as rakish as the single-piece windshield. The hardtop has six darkened moonroofs, and my test vessel had an electric slide-out SureShade to cover the settee and dining area. Abaft that entertainment area was another sun pad, with adjustable backrests.

The sense of volume and light surprised me as I descended belowdecks. The 50’s brightness is aided in part by pale Alpi “timeless oak” paneling and opening ports in each stateroom. The master has 6-foot-3-inch headroom and a nearly king-size berth (80 inches by 65 inches) with walkaround room; it’s 5 feet from the berth to the stateroom door. The en suite head is equally civilized, with a shower measuring bigger than 3 feet by 3 feet. The vessel sink is trendy, and there are Euro-style fixtures. A pullout drawer under the berth, plus hanging lockers with shelving and self-closing drawers in a bureau, provides stowage for a long weekend. This stateroom also has a mini fridge, limiting trips to the galley for a snack.

Forward Thinking

One look at the inverted bow, and an experienced skipper might imagine dings and chips from anchoring, but an entire section pushes outward, carrying a sturdy roller assembly along with a Quick anchor. A video camera tucked in the rode locker, viewed on monitors at the helm, gives the captain a view of what is going down or up. The watertight bulkhead in the chain locker is good protection against collision too.

Like the master, the guest stateroom has over 6-foot-3-inch headroom, a pair of 34-inch-wide berths that slide ­together to form a double, a nightstand, a hanging locker and direct ­access to what doubles as a day head with a shower. No tiptoeing around in the corridor to reach the loo.

But this is a yacht for outside living, with the option for a transom garage that holds a 9-foot-6-inch Williams TurboJet 285 tender that reportedly makes about 44 knots. Abaft the garage, which has rubber rollers for the tender’s launch and retrieval, is a hydraulic swim platform wide enough to stow a PWC.

Given that a crew cabin and a ­tender garage are space eaters, I expected the engine room to be minuscule, but it wasn’t. I dropped down the five-step ladder into the engine room and soon realized I wasn’t alone: There was a Volvo Penta service tech at work. And we weren’t cramped.

Proven Power

The Volvo Penta IPS800s on the Pardo 50 are powered by the Volvo Penta D11, a diesel revered for its use in trucks. The marinized version is an inline six-cylinder with twin entry turbos; a supercharger for low rpm response; and a common-rail fuel system for optimized fuel injection. To maximize engine-room space and lower the 50’s profile, the D11s are linked to the pods using jackshafts, a setup that keeps weight amidships.

I won’t tell you there’s standing headroom (it’s 4 feet, 8 inches), but the walkway between the engines is wide, and he had room aft to kneel sideways, which is why I didn’t see him. The engines on this Pardo 50 were the optional twin 600 hp Volvo Penta IPS800s. Standard power is a pair of 435 hp IPS600s, and an in-between option is 550 hp IPS700, but I’d opt for the 600s as on our Pardo 50—in for a penny, in for a pound.

With the engine package, skippers get joystick controls as well as the Volvo Penta Interceptor vertical trim tabs that automatically adjust to the best running angle. This Pardo 50 also had a Quick gyrostabilizer, adding to stability without cramping the engine room, and a 4-kW Cummins Onan generator.

I settled into the bolstered helm seats abaft the dash with twin 16-inch Garmin multifunction displays, and I put the hammer down. The 50 planes at 12 knots, and 38 knots comes up quickly. This Pardo 50 ran from Miami to Palm Beach, Florida, in lumpy Gulf Stream 3-­footers at a steady 30-knot cruise that was comfortable and dry for everyone aboard. I was told that with 23 people aboard and full fuel during the Cannes Yachting Festival, this same Pardo 50 hit 35 knots.

Iconic 'little blue boat' that calls Montrose Bay home up for sale after family makes tough decision

For almost 50 years a little blue boat has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs by the side of a busy highway.

It is known affectionately by many Tasmanians as "the little blue boat", and has floated alone next to the Brooker Highway at Montrose Bay over the decades.

Sea Breeze, its official name, was built by Robin Attrill in his Montrose backyard in the early 1970s.

His son Colin Attrill said the boat was launched at Macquarie Wharf in 1976.

"It's been on the mooring in Montrose Bay ever since, and that's why it's such an iconic little blue boat," he said.

Tasmanians curious about 'little blue boat'

The boat is an object of fascination for Brooker Highway motorists and foreshore walkers due to it seemingly never moving.

Colin Attrill said it was "absolutely amazing" the number of people who would stop and talk to him about the boat when he was launching the dinghy to go and check on it.

"The number of people that talk to me that are walking past and go 'that boat has been there forever' and 'it was there when I was going to school or every day when I've been driving to work'," he said.

"Some people say they've never seen it move. Well it used to move all the time.

"Of late it's slowed up, we're all busy and dad has slowed up. We lost mum and once that happened it impacted on family activities."

Tough decision to sell

Its owner is now 91 and the boat has not been sailed for about 10 years.

Colin Attrill said the family had recently made the tough decision to try to sell the boat.

"Dad isn't well and he's gotten old, which we all do, and the boat's got old," he said.

"Anyone who knows about a timber boat knows that they need maintenance."

Mr Attrill said the family used to put the boat on the slip at least once a year to clean and antifoul it, and do any repairs.

"But the past few years Dad has been unable to do anything, and the boat unfortunately has just sat on the mooring," he said.

He said the family decided it was time for the boat to have a new owner.

"Nobody is using it, it needs a new owner who will give it the time and get the enjoyment out of it that we had growing up," he said.

"It's a great boat, and there are many years left. Wooden boats just last."

'Next phase' for the boat

The Attrill family is full of passionate sailors and Robin's brother Peter represented Australia in sailing at the Helsinki Olympics in 1952 — Tasmania's fifth Olympian and the first to represent the state in sailing.

When Robin finished building the 25-foot river cruiser, known by the family as The Breeze, it was used for trips away around Hobart.

"We used to have family trips down the channel, down to Cygnet, down to Dover, and all places in between fishing and weekends away," he said.

"We also used to go to events in Hobart like the Hobart Regatta, the Sandy Bay Regatta. We'd be down the river at any chance, or up the river. She made it to New Norfolk a couple of times.

"The boat was all over the place, wherever we could."

Mr Attrill said it would be a sad day when the boat left Montrose Bay after almost 50 years.

"We will see where it goes and where it ends up and what's the next phase for the boat," he said.

Over the years its owner has been keeping a watchful eye on it just a matter of metres away, across the Brooker Highway from his Montrose home of more than 70 years.

"He's always been there. He'd open the blinds in the morning in the kitchen and look out the window and there's the boat," son Colin said.

"It's always been a part of his life."

After new energy vehicles (EVs and PHEVs) crossed 48.2% last week in China, BYD’s CEO Wang Chuanfu said at this rate, 50% NEV share could happen in the next three months.

“The penetration rate of NEVs crossed 48.2 percent last week, and if it continues at this rate, I estimate that the penetration could cross 50 percent in the next three months,” Wang explained at the China EV 100 Forum in Beijing over the weekend.

Just a month ago, BYD’s CEO said he could see China’s NEV reaching 50% by the end of the year, according to CnEVPost .

The penetration rate could be even higher over the next three months as NEVs dominate the market, according to Wang.

About half of BYD’s sales are all-electric, while the other half are PHEVs. Wang said China’s NEV makers must embrace the industry’s shift while advancing cleaner tech.

Last year, NEVs accounted for 35% of China’s auto sales. A jump to 45% would mean an extra two million NEV sales, according to Wang.

After dominating their domestic market, Chinese NEVs are now expanding overseas. Electric vehicles pushed China past Japan to become the global auto export leader. BYD’s first car transport ship docked in Germany last month, carrying 3,000 vehicles, as it’s “just getting started” in Europe.

Meanwhile, Wang warned the industry is entering a tough stretch, and automakers need to scale and grow their brand as quickly as possible.

After launching the Qin Plus Champion Edition (DM-i model) last year, priced below 100,000 yuan ($13,900) for the first time, BYD claimed it was “directly destroying the moat of joint venture vehicles.”

Now, the automaker has several fully electric models below or close to the 100,000 yuan mark.

A 50% NEV share within the next three months would be impressive. China’s NEV market already topped 48% share last week as buyers continue transitioning to cleaner alternatives.

BYD announced a “liberation battle” against gas-powered vehicles last month after cutting EV prices and introducing new low-cost models.

Its cheapest EV so far, the new Seagull , starts at $9,700 (69,800 yuan). The Seagull earned the nickname “Lamborghini mini,” as former Lamborghini designer Wolfgang Egger led its design.

Although BYD is known as a low-cost EV maker, it’s expanding into new segments, including luxury and mid-size SUVs. BYD launched its Yangwang U9 electric supercar last month, starting at $233,000 (1,680,000 yuan).

It also has two new mid-size electric SUVs, the Sea Lion 07 and Song L, rolling out to compete with Tesla’s best-selling Model Y.

Although BYD and Tesla are often compared, BYD sees Tesla as an important partner and wants to work with them to continue gaining market share from ICE cars.
