Nautitech Open 40 boat test – this cat will make you purr

The many qualities of the Nautitech Open 40 make a compelling case for choosing a catamaran over a monohull, says an impressed Matthew Sheahan

catamaran open 40

Product Overview

Space, stability, performance and even safety, if you’re a monohull sailor you will be familiar with the key points of the arguments that multihull advocates present for having two hulls rather than one. In the main, their evidence is hard to refute.

For the same overall length catamarans do indeed have much more volume, especially below decks. They don’t heel like a monohull, something that regularly gains favour with many sailing families. And as for safety, the lack of a ballast keel makes it very unlikely that they will sink, even if capsized, something that no Nautitech cat has ever done in 20 years, we are told.

But when it comes to performance, the argument is less compelling, depending on which cat we’re talking about. See our feature on the pros and cons of multihulls .

If they’re not laden with cruising kit, or are one of the latest generation of multi-decked superstructures modelled on wedding cakes with a tiny token rig stuck on the top, they can in certain conditions outpace an equivalent length monohull.

Most of the time they’re better when reaching, but struggle to keep pace upwind and, for the sailing-minded buyer, this can be a compromise too far.

But with the Nautitech Open 40 catamaran you have to think again because this is a boat that challenges a number of common preconceptions.

At first glance she doesn’t stand out as anything out of the ordinary. Yet look a little closer and she’s far cleaner, simpler and, as a result, more attractive than many typical production cruising cats.

AY7Q5026

There are, however, a few angles from which she looks dumpy and squared off and in places rather slab-sided. But in the main there are many good points in this new model and you can understand why she was the talk of the winter boat shows this year.

Surprising performance

In my opinion her strongest card is her performance under sail, not in the absolute speeds she achieves, but in the feel on the helm and the ease with which she can be handled.

With twin wheels set in each of the aft quarters you are not only enveloped in the security of a deep cockpit wall on the outer flanks, but have a superb view forward and through the wraparound windows in the coachroof. Indeed, the visibility to leeward is better when sailing upwind than aboard most monohulls with large overlapping headsails.

Both engine and sail controls are close to hand on either side with the additional benefit that the leads for the control lines have been well thought out and have far less friction than you would expect. This is particularly impressive given that most of the lines are led back to the cockpit discreetly and produce very little rope clutter.

This, combined with her well-balanced and light steering, makes her fun and rewarding to sail. During our sailing trials we got caught up in the opening stages of the upwind leg of a race in the Solent. Unable to resist lining up against a fleet of fully crewed monohulls, I was surprised at how well she coped.

T31A1180 copy

What she lacked in pointing ability in the 12-16 knot sea breeze she made up for with a typical upwind pace of 6-7 knots. She only really lost out through the tacks when her size and windage slowed her through the breeze, and her self-tacking blade jib didn’t have the power to see her accelerate like the monohulls – hardly surprising. But for cruising, especially short-handed, she was sufficiently nimble and easy to manhandle.

Off the breeze her furling Code 0, flown off a short bowsprit – one of the factory-fitted options – provided plenty of power and her eagerness to sit at 8-9 knots on a reach was clear. Again, she remained light and easy on the helm.

AY7Q5285

Under engine she’s a very manageable boat, and once again the helming position and the good all round visibility make her simple to manoeuvre in tight spaces. Fitted with the upgrade option of a pair of Yanmar 30hp engines (20hp is standard), along with two three-bladed Gori overdrive propellers, she motored at a brisk 7 knot pace with ease.

Otherwise her layout is pretty straightforward. There is plenty of space between the hulls to stow a dinghy on davits off the back of the cockpit, huge lockers forward to keep fenders and warps and plenty of additional stowage for extra sails such as the Code 0. All of which is very much in keeping with the typical layout of modern production cats.

Outdoor saloon

The arrangement of her main living accommodation is one of the few areas where she differs from the norm. Her saloon, for instance, is more outside than in. The patio-type doors and the main athwartships bulkhead run across the boat at approximately midships making the normal, inside living accommodation smaller than would be typical for this size of boat.

A modest table/navigation station is set to port and the galley is to starboard leaving the main saloon outside, abaft the patio doors where it shares the cockpit space.

Screen shot 2015-09-07 at 14.37

While this might sound unusual – and less appealing for colder climates – the layout is certainly comfortable and practical and can be arranged to provide more shelter if required with the awning panels that clip into the underside of the coachroof and the cockpit coamings.

Apart from making the outdoor saloon a more pleasant place to sit while sailing or at anchor, the logic behind the configuration also stems from looking at how people actually use their boats. If it’s warm enough to be aboard that’s fine, but if it’s too cold the pub or a restaurant is a popular option.

The Nautitech comes in either a three or four cabin configuration, the former aimed at an owner’s layout with a spacious heads and shower area in the forward end of the port hull where a cabin would be in the four-cabin version. Both layouts have the provision for single skipper/crew berths in the bows.

AY7Q5311

There are a couple of areas that may raise an eyebrow or two. The first is her builder, Bavaria. If you didn’t know before you started looking over her you’d be hard pressed to guess. So why would Bavaria want to build multihulls?

The answer lies in their desire to expand in the charter market, which they believe now means having a range of multihulls. So, instead of developing a range from scratch, Bavaria chose to buy into the market with the acquisition of Nautitech in 2014 and keep the production outfit in Rochefort, near La Rochelle.

The transaction has been of benefit to both sides after Bavaria brought its expertise in joiner work to Nautitech and raised the game for the French builders. This catamaran has also been designed as a powerboat. Seeing an identical looking boat passing at twice the speed with no rig and the crew sitting on the coachroof cum flybridge is bound to take the owners of the sailing version by surprise.

As is so often the case, once you start sketching out the ideal wishlist for a good, practical family cruiser the sum of the parts can easily point to a catamaran. Yet no matter how compelling the advantages of space and comfort are, factors such as performance and the practicality of berthing, especially in the UK, can count heavily against making a shift to two hulls.

But the Nautitech Open 40 goes a long way to addressing at least one of these issues. She really is a fun and rewarding cruiser to sail, especially as you don’t feel as if you’re perched high above the water and forced to sail from the leeward side on one tack at the only wheel on the boat.

AY7Q5085 copy

She lends herself well to short-handed sailing thanks to a simple, but intelligent cockpit layout. And when it comes to berthing, at just 40ft LOA she’s sufficiently modest in length and beam to slip into most marinas and harbours.

Her price tag of £291,600 ex VAT will make her feel considerably bigger than a typical 40ft monohull, but then that is because she is, especially below decks.

So, though at first glance you might think she’s just another production cat, the reality is the Nautitech Open 40 is quite different. I was impressed.

Excess 11 vs. Nautitech 40 Open

Catamaran comparison, in this article, we compare the excess 11 and the new updated version of the nautitech 40 open catamaran., a comparison between two double-helm performance cruiser catamarans.

40 foot catamarans are the ideal boats to introduce cat sailing. These multihulls are big enough to offer good-standing headroom and three or four comfortable cabins. In this article, we compare the Nautitech 40 Open (generation 3) and the Excess 11. Two similar concepts are based on the idea of a double-helm steering position, and that is where the similarities start and e nd …as you will read.

The popularity of catamarans can be explained by their stability, manoeuvrability and comfortable and spacious living areas. They are  great for chartering and to live-aboard . In case you are unfamiliar with the two brands or the catamaran models in question, here’s a brief introduction.

Nautitech 40 Open (Generation 3)

The Nautitech 40 Open has been designed about seven years ago and  has been improved over the years to the mature product , it is now – the Generation 3 version launched in April 2023.

At the time the N40  was designed, you had either fast cats without a superstructure or cruising cats with a voluminous nacelle.  Naval architect Lombard came up with a new approach  to cat sailing;  the Nautitech 40 Open: a fast cruiser with an enlarged cockpit and reduced superstructure  and a coach roof covering both.

Until today, only one competitor has followed his bold design idea. Lightweight is important, but stiffness and durability are too , that’s why the shipyard has  replaced  many wooden structural parts  with stiff and light composite stringers and bulkheads.

New for 2023 is that the shipyard will continue to focus on quality improvement – in terms of building and also aesthetics. That is why the launched the updated version 3 of the Nautitech 40 Open in April 2023.

Nautitech Cataramans Shipyard

Thanks to their reputation for designing catamarans that are robust and seaworthy, Nautitech Catamarans is recognised as a brand capable of putting sailing back into the heart of the living at sea experience, without compromising on comfort.

The Nautiech Catamarans are since 2018 separated from its former ties with Bavaria Yachtbau and share only the same investment group.

It is in  Rochefort-sur-Mer, the very cradle of shipbuilding and naval architecture and birthplace of Pierre Loti, that Nautitech Catamarans has anchored its activity of construction of luxury catamarans. Anyone familiar with the world of multihulls can quickly appreciate the innovative nature of Nautitech Catamarans, the first manufacturer to understand and define the very spirit of a catamaran. Nautitech was also the first to propose the concept of open living onboard, which combines the saloon and cockpit into one spacious, functional living area. Understanding how important sensations at the helm are to their customers, Nautitech Catamarans places equal emphasis on sailing ability and comfort.

Nautitech DNA – The Concept:

Comfort  – double helm- performance – reliability – safety.

The naval architect behind the design of Nautitech Catamarans,  Marc Lombard, is himself a proud owner of a Nautitech 40 Open  and an avid spokesman for the open concept design and sturdy design and construction of the Nautitech Catamarans. You will find that his designs and models come across many other reputable shipyards in the multihull segment such as: the  ORC Maursadon, C-Cat, Neel Trimarans, Privilege Catamarans, etc.

The Nautitech Catamarans are well known for their rigidity and lightweight hull that leads to direct responsiveness at the helm. This is due to the superior construction technique and clever design of Marc Lombard.  The reinforcement zones, whether in unidirectional, bidirectional, or quadriaxial fabrics, are carefully determined to ensure better rigidity of the Nautitech catamarans.  The quality of manufacture is guaranteed by a construction (high quality) of the hulls, deck, and roof,  sandwich infused, and bonded.

The two helm stations are part of the fundamentals of NAUTITECH’s DNA. Indeed, it is the ideal position to helm at sea but also to manoeuvre at the port.

To date, Nautitech Catamarans has 200 employees, build ca 50-60 catamarans per year, and deliver three different models; Nautitech 40 Open, Nautitech 44 Open, and the new Nautitech 48 Open.

The Excess 11

In January 2020, the Excess 11 was launched as part of a series that includes models ranging from 37 to 50 feet (model numbers 11, 12, 14 and 15) . With its skilled workforce in catamaran manufacturing, the Beneteau Group’s Bordeaux yard (Construction Navale Bordeaux) and Les Sables d’Olonnes shipyards could possibly produce such a large roll-out.

This model uses original tooling instead of borrowing hull parts from Lagoon’s sister line, making it lighter and more weight-conscious while still benefiting from Lagoon’s 35+ years of catamaran expertise. VPLP and interior experts Nauta Design apply their credentials to the design, while car design guru Patrick le Quément adds flair to the model.

Construction Navale Bordeaux: Lagoon Catamarans/ Excess Catamarans Shipyard

Created in 1987, Construction Navale Bordeaux is one of the companies of Groupe Beneteau and is based in Bordeaux.  The shipyard produces both the Lagoon Catamarans and the Excess Catamarans. To this day, the shipyard produces a minium of 40 units per model each year and has is currently (2023) offering the Excess 11, Excess 12, Excess 14, and the Excess 15.

Groupe Beneteau was purchased by a Chezc investment group PPF in 2021 and along with that also the major charter companies and the booking platforms that are all associated and closely linked to the production planning to meet the demand of the yacht charter ownership market.

The Excess Catamarans Concept

The concept of creating a catamaran that is more open and lively is admirable, without the fear of having an overpowered monster on your hands. It makes sense to the company and probably some potential buyers to modestly evolve the Lagoon brand, since cruising catamarans are built more for comfort than speed. Built with the same basic construction as Lagoon, but with a more open deck layout, the appeal is evident. Nautitech has been making this style of boat for some time, and with lighter hulls, while Outremer has been perfecting their performance versions. Lagoon’s old philosophy of “building from the inside out” has been tweaked into a more rounded concept with Excess.

Also similar to the sister brand is the use of balsa coring in the GRP hull above the waterline. Construction is via vacuum infusion for the hull and deck with injection moulding used on the roof to minimise weight. The design minimises the structure forward, so large trampolines are used. Below, the nacelle is shaped to deflect waves, which is good given the modest bridge deck clearance, especially at the aft section. Rudder shafts are close to the wheels — connected with Dyneema line — a simple solution that offers more feel and less complication. Blunt bows maximise the waterline and the tall hulls give generous inside volume with a glass escape hatch in each.

MAXIMIZING TOPSIDE SPACE

The Excess 11 feature outboard helms and flat decks to maximize topside space. A twin helm provides clear forward visibility, and untinted windows allow a view of the whole boat. Additionally, these untinted windows aid in night vision. Rather basic canvas chairs are used for the helm seating, and each has a bimini. The Carbonautica composite wheel responded well to the turns of the two space rudders, as the Dyneema links needed to reach the rudders were short.

Besides the nicely angled Raymarine instrumentation for the steerer, Yanmar engine controls just below are easily read without stooping on the starboard helm. An extra set can be added to the port helm, which is helpful. There’s an optional sunroof that can be closed via a hand crank, the standard from the yard is a fibreglass top. The downside with the soft top is a lack of solid walking space to the boom end and possibility of leakage during heavy rainfall.

FUNCTIONAL CATAMARAN

Like all Lagoons, the Excess 11 is a functional boat. As a result, most gear is well positioned throughout the hull. The running rigging, for example, comes back to the helms and jammers with Harken winches on each side. Short-handed sailing is easy, and mainsheet control is easy with a twin block on the transom. Moulded steps on each hull give good water access for swimming and entering the transoms. Inside the cockpit is ample open space for entertainment and there’s a corner dinette table with surrounding benches and transom bench/storage. Underfoot is more locker space and the liferaft is slung at the outside of the transom.

The deck hatches have a low-profile and there are hand rails on both sides and a single outboard shroud to make walking forward easier. At the bow, the anchor is on the crossbeam, making it more accessible than the convention of having it in a hull indention. The Excess 11 layout keeps it clear of the hull when the boat swings; the downside is weight higher up.

The vertical windlass and chain sit on the longitudinal centre beam, so guests should watch their toes on deployment. A rather flimsy second roller was also fitted on the review boat. Besides the bow lockers is a retractable step for access up to the blunt coach roof for sail handling.

DOUBLE AFT STEERING STATION

Nautitech was long the only producer of cruising cats with steering positions in the back of the hulls. The nearer you are to the water the more you experience the sailing characteristics.

Where you see a trend towards bigger superstructures starting more in the front of the boat, Nautitech stays true to its design philosophy with a relatively short saloon placed a long distance from the bows. The reason behind this is to keep the bows as light as possible, which results in narrower hulls on the waterline,  less water resistance and better sailing characteristics in choppy seas. The big main sail and the self-tacking jib asks for a furling code zero to do justice to the design.

PERFORMANCE – SAFETY – COMFORT

All of the Nautitech40, 44,  and the soon-to-come 48 OPEN are easy on the helm –  you feel the wind pressure in your fingers. The double helms at the aft and the true Open concept of the Nautitech 40 Open with the large fixed bimini top covering the whole after cockpit area and large untinted windows of the superstructure/saloon allows you to have the best overview and eye contact with your crew from both helms. The two helm stations are part of the fundamentals of NAUTITECH’s DNA . Indeed, it is the ideal position to helm at sea but also to manoeuvre at the port.

The advantages of this configuration are multiple:

  • Easily dock manoeuvres with a perfect view of the hull side and the possibility of mooring the rear without moving from the helm.
  • View of the water and sails whether windward or leeward.
  • Optimum steering sensation thanks to a steering system using short-circuit steering cable.
  • The maximum lowering of the boom, unlike the fly helm station or semi-fly, increases the effectiveness of the mainsail that comes flush with the roof and allows easy access to the mainsail for furling.
  • Security and optimized communication with the crew.
  • Having the cockpit and helms on the same level makes the boat more sociable under sail, and safer to move around.

Some of the new features of the Nautitech 40 Open (Generation 3) features:

Noticeable improvements have been made on the sailing performance from the earlier versions built between 2014-2018 versus the updated Nautitech 40 Open Generation 2 launched in late 2018, by optimising the rigging :

The Generation 2 N40s has a lower boom and a longer mast-increasing  sail area by 4 sqm. Alongside improvements made on the reefing line system, it is again placing itself in the upper bracket of sailing-capable cruising catamarans in the market.

Updated the exterior design in line with the 44 Open : White coachroof, Black stairs support, Hull decoration: single gold line, New black davits, Black steering wheel, Black roof handrail, and Flush opening portholes

Some new options that include: a black mast, Black ceiling line, Spots for lighting, and the New shape of the windows of the saloon and the windows facing the aft-cockpit.

Sporty Double Helm vs True Open Concept

Excess 11 interior7

Excess 11   Interior

Voluminous saloon and hulls.

Compared with one of the similar-sized and older Lagoons, the 380, the Excess 11 really has vast space in the saloon, even with the large galley included on the starboard side.  Those vertical bulkheads are where the volume comes from of course, so you may dodge around with windage at anchor but inside is an airy atmosphere no matter the weather, especially when the two large front windows are opened. There’s even a corner navigation station adjoining the main couch that surrounds the dinette table.

The Excess 11 is available with three or four cabins. Both versions have two heads—one in the master suite in the port hull (if that configuration is selected) and a second shared by the two guest cabins to starboard. This second large head and shower replaces what could have been two minuscule wet heads. In a 37ft boat, this is a completely reasonable tradeoff.

The four-cabin version has a bathroom in each hull, located between the cabins. Stepping down into the hulls is an airy and light-filled experience, thanks to opening skylights and those large elongated portlights. In the port hull, the two double cabins have similar volume, including useful wardrobe space, and a large bathroom between aids privacy.

The master cabin is large and private, and the bed has cutaway corners. This owner’s version has a spacious layout with an athwartships bed filling the stern hull, vanity desk nearby, and a large bathroom in the bow. Overall, the owner’s space is incredible for a 37-foot boat

The saloon and galley are compact, but want for nothing, with plenty of refrigeration, and counter top and seating space. Storage space is adequate. The interior is light on drawer pulls and other cabinetry hardware, but it works. The effect is a smoother look that integrates well with the boat’s overall aesthetic.

Hull design is similar to Lagoon but this is the first of the Excess brand to be separately made. Key features are the twin mini keels , rudders behind sail drives, and flaired hulls to maximise volume in living spaces above the waterline.

Nautitech 40 Open   Interior

The open concept.

The cockpit and the saloon merge both into one large living space

The spacious cockpit and luxurious  saloon become one living space . Time to talk, time to rest, time for friends, time for yourself – the Naututech 40 Open ensures you have a safe and comfortable time aboard, whether you are at the helm or just as a guest abroad.

Life aboard a Nautitech 40 Open is defined by comfort and plenty of space for spending relaxed hours at sea. The cockpit and the saloon merge into one large living space  where you can meet and relax. Everything is on one level without steps.

Over time the shipyard has improved the interior gradually and created a light and airy atmosphere. The interior has clean lines, and all solutions have been well-engineered and thought through.

The cockpit, longer than the saloon (Open concept) has two long sofas opposite to each other, the wide entrance to the compact and cosy saloon gives access to a 4 seat dinette on port and a galley at starboard with one part facing forward and the cooking and sink area facing to the large cockpit.

The furniture is finished in light wood or dark wood (options), with dark floors. Although not so wide as her competitors the cabins are comfortable in every sense because of the design with clean lines. To gain space for the cabins Marc Lombard has chosen for one head/shower per hull.

In late 2020 the shipyard did upgrade the standard of the N40 Open with a double sink and the introduction of a new and updated upholstery catalogue with Serge Ferrari, Eden material and Sunbrella combinations.

An updated interior design:, One-floor level, New shape of the bench, Black skirting board of the furniture, Larger chart table to re-group all nav equipment, White roof pillars, New black leatherette finishing with Nautitech logo, New black leatherette finishing with bottle storage, Fridge CRUISE 130 Inox clean, New worktop with fiddles, Push-lock furniture opening, Furniture with black grooves, and an Upgrade of the indirect lighting option.

  • Well mannered and balanced catamaran: repositioning of the mast on the main bulkhead and centering the weight - makes it easy to handle and improves performance
  • Double Steering position low near the sterns, for good visibility, access, and feeling off sailing.
  • Fine-entry bows and anti-spray chine allows for a smooth passage through water
  • Construction Technique and Design: Shipyard's vast experience clearly noticeable. It the most well-built series production catamaran on the market
  • No daggerboards
  • Only two heads and showers
  • Big cockpit - comparable smaller saloon
  • Front cabins less wide as with cruiser competitors
  • Less load capacity: since its a light-weight catamaran, loading to much on it will hinder its natural sailing performance

Bavaria Open 40

  • By Cruising World Staff
  • Updated: August 16, 2015

Very responsive. Tacked easily with main alone,” I wrote and underlined in my notebook after sailing the Bavaria Open 40 catamaran, which made its North American debut at Strictly Sail Miami in February. For the boat, and for the builder, the show was a coming-out party. Last summer, Bavaria Yachts purchased catamaran builder Nautitech, and with the transaction came the recently launched Open 40, a concept developed by Nautitech founder Bruno Voisard and his team in Rochefort, France. The boat was designed by naval architect Marc Lombard.

Bavaria, which builds a range of sailboats and powerboats at its yard in Giebelstadt, Germany, had wanted to add multihulls to its lineup and found a fit with Nautitech, the company said in announcing the deal. The Open 40, as well as a 46-foot sailing catamaran expected to launch next year, will be branded as Bavarias; two other models, a 48 and a 54, will continue to be sold as Nautitechs. Voisard will remain with the company, and catamaran production (both sail and power) will continue in Rochefort.

When I saw the Open 40 at the dock during the show, I liked it well enough, but the cat really came alive once we were out on open water.

Motoring, the twin 30-horsepower Yanmar engines and saildrives had us cruising at 6.8 knots (2,500 rpm). Wide open (3,900 rpm), our speed jumped past 8 knots.

When we reached Biscayne Bay, the main was easily raised using the electric Lewmar winch, conveniently located near the starboard helm station. (The boat has twin wheels, mounted outboard on either stern.) Then, in no time flat, the sail was sheeted in, and with a turn of the wheel we tacked smoothly back and forth — not always a successful endeavor in light air on a big multihull. The self-tacking jib unfurled with a tug of the outhaul, and then we were off. It was as simple as that.

At the start of our sail, the breeze was in the 8- to 10-knot range, and closehauled, the speedo hovered right around 5 knots. Later, with the breeze blowing twice as hard, we scooted right along at nearly 8 knots — and, yes, the Open 40 was quite a lively and fun boat to drive.

The Open 40 concept centers around a small but adequate enclosed saloon that spills out through a pair of sliding glass doors to a spacious outdoor living space under a hard bimini. On this boat you spend your time outside, soaking in your surroundings, and retreat to the interior only to sleep and cook.

The saloon has a compact galley with a two-drawer fridge, a sink, a propane two-burner stove and oven to starboard, and a table/nav station with couches on either side to port. The boat comes in two possible layouts (both with two heads with showers): a three-cabin version for private owners, and four cabins for charter. Three ports in either hull provide light in the cabins below; deck hatches overhead in the cabins and saloon open for ventilation.

The Open 40’s hulls are solid glass below the waterline and cored above it. The deck, cabin and bimini are cored as well. The hulls are relatively fine at and below the waterline for good performance, and then flare out with chines to create living space below deck and buoyancy at sea.

The boat I sailed was loaded with options. All up and ready to sail, the price quoted at the show was $539,000 (a base boat costs $423,700, delivered to the East Coast). Nautitech has developed a good reputation for building quick cruising cats. With Bavaria’s worldwide dealer network, including Horizon Yacht Charters, expect to see a whole lot more of them out there sailing soon.

  • NAUTITECH 40 OPEN CATAMARAN

Aeroyacht Multihull Specialists are ambassadors and flagship dealers for the award winning line of Nautitech cruising catamarans.

Find out why the multiple award winning Nautitech 40 Open catamaran is a fresh, new concept in cruising catamarans. The French catamaran builder’s long experience in manufacturing and engineering sailing yachts to a very high standard are manifested in their newest creation. The Nautitech 40 Open catamaran, easily singlehanded and is an ideal boat for long range cruisers and liveaboards. You can even order your boat with a slightly shorter mast, enabling her to transit through some of the lower ICW bridges.

Nautitech Open 461 Catamarans

The Nautitech 40 Open has significant advantages over other catamarans. Below are some of the most notable ones:

Largest Social Space of any 40′ Catamaran

Unlike a traditional catamaran whose cockpit is about the same size as the salon, the Nautitech 40 Open combines these two spaces. This innovation results in a much larger than average cockpit and a combined social area. An ingenious convertible awning system quickly transforms the cockpit into an enclosed space (which some customers heat in winter and air-condition in the tropics).

Most Advanced Hull Design

The new Nautitech 40 Open has advanced hulls designed by French star architect Marc Lombard who created some of the world’s fastest ocean going catamarans. Her hulls have built in chines. Consequently the boat has a slim waterline which slice through the water, yet provide a large luxurious interior and structural rigidity. The added benefit is a faster and drier ride.

Best Helm and Sailing Experience of any Cruising Catamaran

The unique twin helm stations provide superior views without any blind spots. Unlike charter cats which one “drives” from a precariously elevated flybridge the Nautitech 40 Open lets you feel the boat. Inspired by racing yachts you get true sailing sensations and singlehanded docking is a snap. Hold the twin carbon wheels and feel the mechanical steering with fingertip control. You will be sailing this boat with the helm feedback of a high performance sailing monohull rather than a camper. Finally a catamaran which puts sailing back into cruising catamarans. The added benefit of twin steering station is redundancy and with the large sun blocking mainsail raised – you will not need a Bimini to protect you from the sun. In bad weather the exquisitely equipped inside steering station will have you in full autopilot control with full weather protection. Why suffer standing outside?

The Nautitech 40 Open catamaran is known for its speed (see the Nautitech Open 40 video sailing at 20 knots) and high quality interior joiner work. Engineered and built in France the interior craftsmanship is above standards for yachts of this size.

Unsinkable due to Closed Cell Foam – no Balsa

The Nautitech 40 Open catamaran is built using the most advanced composite technology to the highest international offshore standards. Because of the low cost,95% of today’s production catamarans are built with a wood core (even in the bilge areas!) which tends to rot. Not the Nautitech 40 Open- which uses closed cell, high density foam as core. This makes the boat virtually unsinkable and osmosis resistant. Solid composite bilges, sacrificial keels and a series of strategically placed watertight bulkheads make this one of the safest offshore cruising catamarans available today.

Another advantage over other cruising catamarans are the design and execution of the 40 Open underwater appendages. The aerodynamically optimized keels have a higher aspect ratio and less resistance. This results in more lift and sailing characteristics indistinguishable from dagger boards but without the hassle of operation and safety concerns. The deep, high aspect ratio twin rudders are well aft and closely spaced to the hull for optimal rudder and autopilot control.

We are not the only ones who have recognized these magnificent vessels. In October 2015 the Nautitech 40 Open won, as the very first catamaran ever -the two most coveted industry awards in the same year !

Owner Comments:

This is what Gregor Tarjan (owner of an Open 40 and founder of Aeroyacht Ltd.) had to say after a test sail: “The 40 Open works so well as a sailing machine because of a combination of compounding features:  her narrow waterline, chine for stiffness, closely spaced bulkheads and light weight to large sail plan. Pair that with a closed cell foam core, reliable fine appendages and mechanical F1 type helming and you have the perfect performance cruiser – a “true Swiss Army Knife of sailing yachts”…as the press has called this boat”

THE NAUTITECH 40 OPEN

The catamaran nautitech 40 open, a new design with more upgrades.

The 2018 Nautitech 40 Open is the NEW upgraded version of Marc Lombard , that again has succeeded in redefining the living space of a cruising catamaran. Whereas in the past the deck saloon and cockpit lounge have tended to be separate worlds, here they have been combined – resulting in a completely new feeling of space.

The 40 Open is a catamaran for sailors that understand how the performance features will made a better and safe handling. The Catamaran Nautitech 40 Open can achieve upwind angles that competitors can’t.

Based on the experience that daily life takes place in the cockpit, on a 40-foot vessel, either the cockpit lounge or saloon generally suffer from size limitations, but here, the two areas have simply been combined. This in turn has only been made possible with the help of a sophisticated tarpaulin system . As a result, dinners and parties will no longer be disturbed by wind or weather.

Schedule your demo today to understand why the Open 40 is the cat chosen by sailors.

The largest cockpit in the market , seating 10 persons

Best sailing performance in its class, 360 degrees unobstructed views from cockpit, two helm stations for better maneuvering in harbors, very stiff construction, with vacuum infused deck & hull, detachable keel system for extra safety, lower boom position , for stability and safety, 25% less hull weight than any other 40′ catamaran, propellers position designed to work during high seas, french design and german engineering.

Nautitech Open 40 Catamaran (2019) 'Nauti by Nature'

New Nautitech Open 40 catamaran Exterior

This is a 2019 model, with the new grey coach roof, and Mark 2 Saloon configuration, where the galley faces aft to conjoin with the cockpit. The other big changes are the large Hull Picture windows, creating an even lighter ambience in the 4 double cabins. She has two heads and showers, and a cockpit shower.

The Nautitech Open 40 catamaran Features:

The “Open” 40 name relates to the designer’s vision of a sailing/living space unlike any other. The Mark 2 saloon has an aft-facing galley,  fridge, new larger hull windows and a saloon lounge area, with an integrated ‘occasional’  navigation station. Two large coach roof hatches provide ventilation at anchor (along with two fans, and air conditioning as standard on the Horizon spec).

Upholstery is in cream leatherette inside, with silvertex cushions outside. The oak interior adds to the contemporary aesthetics.

The saloon opens seamlessly into the cockpit, providing a huge living area whether under sail or at anchor. A hard bimini covers the cockpit living space.

With a helm position( and throttles) on each hull (with a bimini over both port and starboard helms), you are driving the boat from a position where you have good visibility forward and aft, and you are able to see all four corners of the boat. This configuration means that you can helm from the leeward or windward side, and the skipper is more sociably in the same living space as the rest of the crew. It also means that you are always on the favoured side of the yacht when docking!

As well as the Sail magazine best boat award, the Open 40 was also named Cruising World’s best multihull  cruiser for 2016.

A cruising cat has always been a great boat to charter; the new Nautitech Open 40 catamaran adds the essential ingredient of simple, spectacular sailing as standard.

Sailing performance is enhanced by:

  • High-aspect rudders and high-aspect sails
  • Self-tacking jib
  • You get all the fun of a fast, close-winded cat, comfortably sailed by two people, but with the living space you would expect in a 45-footer!

You can air-condition the entire cockpit at anchor (and the rest of the interior of course) thanks to Drop-down panels. The Open 40 seats eight people with ease at the cockpit table, and you can enjoy panoramic views throughout the cockpit and saloon.

Other features to maximise your comfort include:

  • Fusion stereo system with Bluetooth & USB
  • B and G Autopilot
  • Large B and G Chart Plotters at each helm
  • 12 ft Dinghy with 15 hp outboard motor

Then you go sailing! A fathead main ( which does not have to be clipped and unclipped from the track) is hoisted effortlessly with the ( standard Horizon spec) electric winch, and as you bear off, the Solent jib is unfurled and sets beautifully on its self-tacking track. In 7.5 knots of wind, single-handed, without touching a sheet, the cat tacks through 105 degrees and never drops below 3.6 knots during the tack. She goes upwind easily at 40 degrees apparent.

The new Nautitech Open 40 catamaran is a very well thought out catamaran, with a remarkable turn of speed, and handling to match. This is a yacht to get truly excited about.

You can read Horizon’s own Open 40 test sail blog piece to learn more about this Yacht.

Find Your Rate Check out our special offers

Did you know Horizon’s charters start and finish at noon? This means we can get you out sailing your first afternoon after your briefings – remember to watch your video briefings to speed up your check out! At the end of your trip, you sail back to Nanny Cay to refuel and debrief before your noon departure. This gives you a full 6 nights/7 days chartering around our beautiful islands, unlike some companies that start at 5pm, meaning you will have to sleepaboard* at the docks, and then finish at 10am, again meaning you will probably have to stay overnight on the docks the night before you leave to fly home.

*If available, a sleep aboard can be added the night before your charter start for a small supplement, boarding your yacht after 5pm.

Our standard charter rates are applicable for charters of 5 days or more up to a maximum of five weeks. For a tailored quote for charter durations outside this range please contact our reservations team who will be pleased to assits.

Current Rates

Weekly rates (full 7 days / 6 nights) are listed above as daily rates. Charters start and finish at noon. Our minimum charter duration requirement is 5 nights.

All yachts come with rigid inflatables & outboards, biminis, BBQ, Stereo, GPS, linens, towels, safety & galley equipment etc. See  What’s Included  for a full list.

C = Cabins, H = Heads, AC = Air Conditioning, S = Skipper first day only

BVI Charter Rates shown above are for 6 nights per vessel (min 5 nights except for Christmas and New Year min 7 nights + supplements on selected yachts) with the additional daily rate should you wish to add nights. catamaran open 40

Licensed for 6 persons, this 15ft RIB with 60HP Yamaha outboard will get you and your crew to snorkelling spots and the beach in style and comfort.

Make your charter yacht vacation a breeze – enjoy the comfort of being able to tie up your yacht for the night and then continue exploring the surrounding bays! You can pick up your mooring ball at the Bight and then head to the Indians or the Caves for a snorkel. If you visit the Dogs, there’s no need to choose only one snorkel spot for your lunch stop, zip around them all!  A swim ladder makes boarding easy from the water.

For popular spots where it’s trickier to find a mooring, the RIB is the perfect alternative. Settle into Great Harbour, Jost Van Dyke for the night and then take the RIB to White Bay for the afternoon to enjoy painkillers without the hassle of finding a mooring ball or having to move your yacht for the night.

The North Sound boasts a selection of some of the best dining options in the BVI. There’s no need to settle for only one spot when you have the RIB. Pick up provisions from Leverick Bay, enjoy the plunge pool at Nova in Deep Bay, and then zip back to the sound for sundowners at Saba Rock before enjoying dinner at The Bitter End.

If you have a mix of snorkelers, beachgoers, shoppers and sailors onboard then give your group flexibility by taking the standard dinghy included in your charter as well. This will also remove the need to make multiple dinghy trips ashore for larger groups.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Since it first came out, back in early 2014, the concept has surprised people... before quickly seducing them.  The order book immediately showed the success of this trendy new model. The takeover of Nautitech by Bavaria is now allowing the manufacturer to take a new step forward in the industrialization of production (purchasing, engineering, outsourcing development ...). Overhauling the interior and restyling the silhouette were therefore essential in allowing the company to establish its new brand while sustaining such an auspicious catamaran. We tested this significantly revised 40 footer, shown at Cannes in September 2017.

For an under 12 meter model it’s captivating.

12m: The “magic size” to enjoy being able to fully master everything! Not too big to allow fluid and instinctive handling, but not so small that the crew (not always seafarers) don’t feel at home and enjoy good comfort at sea.  Nautitech and Marc Lombard have dared to revisit the “open” concept (at the same time as the Bali created by Olivier Poncin and Xavier Fay!), which meant: reducing the volume of the sacrosanct deck saloon in order to allow the lounge deck to expand!  They needed to do this with finesse, preserving if possible the advantages of the one whilst avoiding the major disadvantage of a truly openable version (apparent wind, spray, sun but which makes the catamaran significantly lighter!).

Open Waters Yachts Logo

Introducing the most exciting performance-focused catamaran to hit the sailing world, the Open Waters 40 is an all-electric catamaran that leverages the latest in yacht construction technologies designed to maximize the thrill of sailing yet still provide the creature comforts of a multihull.

Great handling and speed.

The ESC40 is a 40-ft catamaran designed to be two to three times faster than the typical cruising cat – using carbon fibre to reduce weight and provide increased hull strength.

The twin helm stations are covered by a solar cell-covered roof and come with a 59m2 main sail in addition to three headsails: Jib 26 m ² , FRO 65 m ² and Asail 121 m ² .

The hull is rated to handle boat speeds in excess of 20 knots. With curved retractable daggerboards providing better upwind handling and performance at speed.

The retractable rudders, together with the low draft of 2 ft, allow the boat to cruise in shallow waters and to be beached on the bow or stern.

catamaran open 40

Regenerative Energy

Thanks to the low weight, higher boat speed and the solar/hydro regeneration systems on-board. The boat is a 100% energy self-sufficient.

The twin electric drives and advanced battery technology allows for quiet, fossil fuel-free cruising.

Using 10 kW motors, the close-quarter power and handling is unrivalled. The folding propeller generates electricity while sailing together with the roof-mounted solar cells, recharging the battery while in operation.

The integrated drives, battery and battery management systems are intelligently inter-connected and provide real-time and predictive insights on power consumption, generation and operational range.

The boat comfortably accommodates four adults and two children, and is sure to bring you all modern comforts such as a 400L water reserve shower and an electric stove.

The hull interior boasts 6’4” of head room with the coach offering even more generous space with 6’8” of head room up to 7 at the aft dinette. The wet deck, spacious with 300 ft ² between hulls features the main stateroom.

Each hull features three deck hatches and six portlights for excellent ventilation while the trampoline across the beam is 305 ft ² of play, relaxation and dolphin viewing.

ESC40 Interior Layout Main Cabin Table

Our unique construction techniques allows us to manufacture the boat in Canada in a quarter of the time compared to traditional boat building.

We can also build and ship your boat in as early as four months, greatly surpassing the industry standard of 12+ months.

From order to build and delivery, our price compares very favourable to other fast cats.

Faster, cheaper delivery

The boat can be packed in a standard 40ft freight container and be shipped safely anywhere in the world at a much lower cost (up to $50,000 savings) and in a fraction of the time.

Boat owners can now also ship their boat one or both ways between North America, the South Pacific, Mediterranean or the Carribean for a one way cruise or an overwintering.

Electric Sailing Catamaran ESC40 fits in Shipping Container

Vacuum Resin Infusion

Vacuum resin infusion is the process at the heart of our technology and is used for all parts.

The vacuum resin process removes all of the air between the fibres of a part prior to the introduction of the resin.

After the process, our parts are meticulously sanded with variable grit — allowing for maximum paint adhesion on surfaces and smooth, stylish edges.

Core Materials

Core materials are introduced into the part to increase stiffness without increasing weight.

The core is a structural-grade foam with a high shear strength characteristic: if the part is of a complex shape, we cut the foam into sections, thermoforming it to the required shape.

We use five different sizes and densities of foam on the boat, optimized for local strength requirements.

We purchase carbon fiber by the roll and over 35 rolls are used in each boat. We have engineered the laminate schedule to be most efficient in the various areas of the boat maximising strength and reducing weight.

Each meant to be the most efficient for their respective areas. The fabrics are stitched, instead of weaved.

Stitched fabrics do not need to bend over or under other fibre and lay flat, making a stronger part.

At Open Waters, it is our mission to make catamaran cruising more exciting and environmentally sustainable. We’ve set out to create a performance cruising catamaran that will be a joy to sail and that will raise the bar in environmental sustainability.

We have developed a unique  design and manufacturing process, selected high performance  materials that enable us to build a boat that uses less materials and is 50% lighter. As a result it is a lot faster and as a result it is able to generate and store the energy needed to propel it electrically for hours and provide enough energy for on board equipment.

We use high performance carbon fibre and a vacuum infusion process to maximize strength and reduce the use of resin and eliminate resin vapour emissions. We use 100% recycled PET foam core wherever possible and we see the opportunity for incremental use of bio-based epoxy and natural fibres in our future.

As we continue to develop our sustainability roadmap for our boats we will perform a full lifecycle analysis to identify other opportunities to minimize our carbon footprint.

The unique processes and skills we have developed can be applied and licensed to other marine and recreational vehicles businesses.

Simon Angus

Simon Angus P.Eng is a professional mechanical engineer with a background in project management and a passion for sailing.

He spent his university summers travelling around Europe searching for the best combination of wind and waves in addition to teaching both sailing and windsurfing.

After moving to Canada in 2004, Simon bought a Catalina 27 in Kitimat BC and enjoyed sailing in the Douglas channel with his young family. A career move to Alberta paused his sailing career until he found the joys of chartering sailboats in the Caribbean.

After a 20 year career in industrial engineering and project management he decided to make a change and combined his passion and profession to launch Open Waters Design and Manufacturing in 2016.

He designed and manufactured an 18ft canoe and developed a plug and mold and his proprietary vacuum resin infusion process.  After the successful build of the canoe, Simon built a high performance 18ft A class foiling sailing catamaran out of  a Carbon fibre and refined the mold construction and vacuum resin infusion process.

After researching the various build steps, Simon started with CNC shaping of a plug, hand finishing and building the hull molds. He also built the mast, Z foils and the Tee foil rudders. After successful trials in Vancouver BC, Simon then set out on his next ambitious project, to design and build the boat he had dreamt about for years.

A boat that could be shipped anywhere in the world, sail on with his family and returned to Vancouver for summer cruising and would be electrically sustainable.

Simon was introduced to Hal Whitacre in 2019 which started a design relationship that has resulted in the creation of the Open Waters ESC40.

Hal Whitacre, owner of Whitacre yacht design since 1984 and is responsible for some of the fastest and most luxurious boats ever built.

Hal is Open Waters Chief Naval Architect and has worked closely with Simon over the past 2 years to produce the detailed designs that make up the Open Waters ESC 40.

Hal has a distinguished career in Naval Architecture graduating from the University of Michigan with a degree in Naval architecture and Marine Engineering.

Throughout his career he has pushed the boundaries of naval architecture notably designing the Open Class 60 “Imagine”; breaking ground with the largest rig ever put on an Open 60.

Hal also owns and operates Bruce Roberts USA and in that capacity, he has designed over 100 steel and aluminium boat kits in addition to many fiberglass and  wood sail and power boats. Most recently, Hal was the chief Naval Architect for Gunboat Catamarans when they were built in the USA.

Since their move to Europe, Hal has completed 2 gunboat 55’s along with a conversation of a gunboat 55 to a powercat ferry which has recently conducted successful sea trials.

Hal and his wife Tammy split their time between Annapolis, Md and Sister Bay, Wi.  Hal continues to race Lasers during the winter and windsurfs/foilsurfs as much as possible.

40ft Catamaran Models Comparisons

We compare specifications, dimensions, sail area, and pricing on the most popular 40ft catamarans in 2020.

Since 2016, Fountaine Pajot, Lagoon, Leopard, Bali, and Nautitech all rolled out new 40 ft catamaran models in a similar price range that are innovative, spacious, well-built, and comfortable. The latest model to be added to this 40ft array in 2020 is the Bali Catspace.

Bali has done away with the Bali 4.1 model and has designed the Bali Catspace with much improved and innovative features while Lagoon updated their popular L400 and redesigned it with the mast further back to accommodate a self-tacking jib, open scoops, and updated interior. The FP Lucia 40, released in 2016, has pretty much stayed the same, as has the Leopard 40. They are both very popular and successful cats. While the Nautitech Open 40 is a nice sporty sailing cat, it has not really taken hold in the US market with the aft helm stations.

These 40ft catamaran models are affordable and easily be handled by a coupled. It also has all the amenities suitable for a cruising boat such as an ice maker, washing machine, bigger fridge/freezer capacity, and big living spaces, which is very attractive for live-aboard cruising couples.

The 40ft catamaran holds its value because it is in high demand on the used boat market. The 40ft catamaran size range just makes sense.

Read our previous 40ft comparison article for older models:  How Do The Most Popular 40-ft Production Catamarans Compare?

New 2020 40Ft Catamaran Comparison

The five main production catamaran contenders in 2020 for liveaboard couples are:

  • BALI Catspace
  • FP Lucia 40
  • Nautitech 40 Open

40ft Catamaran Models Specifications

The pricing for the different brands are generally in the same range since this a competitive space and the manufacturers have to make sure they are not priced out of the market. There are essentially no “bad catamarans”. Most are all built to recognized and enforced codes such as the European CE standard, so it comes down to personal preference. Some boats have Balsa cores and others have closed cell foam cores. Some have large nets, others have small nets and some have no nets.

All the forward deck designs are acceptable and safe, as we have now conclusively seen over the last five years. The current trend is smaller nets and larger foredeck areas for the most part on cruising cats. Performance cats all have nets and longer bows and are a different category to the production cruisers. Lagoon has the biggest living space, Bali has the best live-ability overall and FP and Leopard are very popular for couples with the semi-raised helm position but that too is a personal preference.

In terms of the extras or additional options, I normally recommend the following:

  • The largest engine option available – this is important for your exit strategy especially in the US market and of course it is nice to have the extra power since the modern cats have quite a lot of windage.
  • The best winch pack available
  • All the cleats offered
  • Mostly it is smart to take the code zero pack even if you do not order the sail immediately (Difficult and expensive to retro fit)
  • Folding props – I really think that if you are going to do any extended cruising the last thing you want is to be dragging fixed props
  • Air Conditioning if you want to have it
  • Generator unless you are going to go Lithium with all the inverters and electronics to replace the generator.
  • Solar – I normally take the factory option and then add aftermarket to increase the array
  • If possible cable throttles and not electronic (If you are struck by lightning at least you can still control the engines if they still run)
  • Electrically assisted davits at a minimum – your dinghy is your “car” so one needs to have an efficient handling system (we raise our dinghy every night for security)
  • Watermaker is fantastic to have. It really makes life so much easier.
  • Estelle will definitely opt for the washing machine – we never had one but since she’s had it onboard our Lagoon 450, she will not go without again.

Fabulous article and great comparisons, thank you. How do they sail? Is there any real difference?

HI Chrissy thank you! The performance of the boats are all very similar. They are all cruising cats, so not exactly rocket ships but totally adequate for a an average cruising couple. You could get a little more performance out of any of these boats depending on how aggressively you sail the boat and the type of sails you have. We race our boat and almost always end up in the top three boats.

Thank you for your article, I think we will go for the Catspace

Your welcome! I think you will be very happy with this choice. Only recommendation for any of these models, is upgrade the engines to 40hp.

In your opinion, which Cat is the the best value and what would you budget for upgrades that deliver an above average sailing and comfort experience? Obviously upgrades can be all over the map but you mentioned upgrading engine to 40hp – what else do you feel are almost ‘required’ upgrades? Thanks!

This is a big subject and there are many opinions, I would be happy to discuss further -Stephen

We have a 2020 Leopard 40 Owners version. We love it. Just wish it carried a bit more fuel.

Hi Eugene, yes! The Leopards are very popular and we sell many of them. They are definitely a great bang for your buck. Thank you for your input!

The 40 Open has the longest WL, Largest Sail Area and has the lightest displacement… indicating it ‘should’ sail better than the others. Other than the helm position, what are the other differences (drawbacks?) you have observed or can comment on (if any)? It appears to be trying to straddle the ‘performance / cruiser’ designation… would you say it is successful?

Doug, yes you are correct however it is a displacement hull, just like the other cats in this category and while it may be a little lighter and have a bigger sailplan, it sails marginally faster, so that is not too much of a factor. In general they are nice boats but the living space is small and just like the new Excess range from Lagoon, the biggest drawback of these cats in our market is the helm position. The aft helm station have just never caught on, which is the reason that Catana and Outremer also moved their helm stations to the bulkhead rather than on the sterns.
