Considering an Ericson Independence 31

Greetings Ericson Owners - I'm considering an Ericson Independence 31as a potential cruising sailboat. I'll give a bit of background and what we expect from our next boat... or as we refer to it, the "big boat." We are currently sailing a Venture 222 that we lovingly restored over two years. It's my third or forth "rehab" and while she turned out great! I documented the entire process here in the MacGregor Owners forum - Titled "and so it begins." As s in most sailboat projects, we spent way more than S/V Sea Gypsy will ever be worth, but that goes without saying (we don't do this for money). We love her, she sails easily and we can trailer her anywhere. She has been a good "learner" for my partner and co-captain Molly. We have logged many hours since completing her last year, including a five-day cruise in Perdido Bay. As we sail and consider our future plans both Molly and I agree we would like to eventually buy a larger boat for part-time cruising. We are located in Louisville, Kentucky and sail on Kentucky Lake, Lake Barkley, the Ohio River and a number of large lakes in our area. The eventually cruising sailboat will likely stay in West Kentucky as it's some of the best inland sailing around. It's also located on the ICW, so after some years of weekend sailing, upgrades and lessons the idea would be to head down the ICW and well who knows... the Bahamas, The Keys... your typical "part time cruising couple." I've looked at a number of potential cruising sailboats (to be honest, I'm always looking but don't tell work). I've researched many and of course I know the challenges and pitfalls of older production sailboats. We considered a Hunter Cherubini 30, We have looked at New Ports, Catalinas etc... I've gotten a earful on the differences between a production cruiser and a true "blue water" boat. I get it, I've seen the difference and understand why a Hunter or Catalina may not be a good choice. We obviously are on a modest budget and that's why we of course where drawn to production cruisers. And to be honest, some of them might fight the bill if equipped right. We won't be doing long offshore passages (Ft. Lauderdale to Bimini would be the longest passage we would ever consider and we would do it during a favorable weather window. I've been sailing since I was a young boy and consider myself a capable sailer and am aware of the dangers when inexperienced sailors push boats into situations they where not designed for (i.e. I recently read the accounts of someone trying to make it to the Bahamas in a Mac 26 yes they made it... but it wasn't pretty or wise). All that being said, I love the classic lines of the EI31. I've always been a traditional sailor and love a classic. We found one near one of our cruising spots on Kentucky Lake. The price is right (Dropped from 25K to 9K) so they have my attention. It also an indication of how "soft" the used sailboat market is, especially for boats of this vintage. She is a 1978 and appears to be in overall good condition though I can't speak to that until we visit early next month. I'm looking for some overall input from sailors who have sailed the EI31. I hear good things. She is the sloop rigged version I think. If this prompts some discussion I'll post some pictures. If I don't move on her maybe someone her will. Seems like there are fewer than 75 of these classics around. Last question - Does the EI31 have a shower? I see she has 35 gallons of fresh water but, no mention of a shower. If there are any other got ya's I'd love to know them. I heard they have an issue with their compression posts and maybe some deck/core issues. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We would like to sail her locally and upgrade equipment as we go - before we head out and become part time cruisers (that timeline is still up in the air as we both work and may continue to work for the next 7 to 10 years who knows). I've seen these go for 20 plus K upgraded. Is she a decent project. Will she hold some value if we upgrade. Thanks in advance! Far Winds Todd

You have probably already read this article. Classic Plastic Sailboat Review: Ericson Cruising 31 They sound like a good choice for the cruising you describe. With a 4' 11" draft, they would sail comfortably in the ICW and if they are currently selling between $30,000 - $50,000 now, a well maintained and up-to-date Ericson 31 will probably continue to sell for that price. Good fortune and fresh wind on your cruising adventures. -Will (Dragonfly)

Good to hear from you Dragonfly, It's always a pleasure. Yes I have indeed read that article but appreciate your input whenever and wherever you want to add it. I've been busy sailing all summer some my visits to the forum "tail off" as the season gets going. Alas with a nip in the air my mind turns to the day we can cast off for an extended cruise. You no doubt remember my description of what we where looking for in a boat... doesn't have to happen tomorrow (we currently have our V222, a Hobie 16 and Multiple Sunfish to keep our addiction fed). But, extended cruising in the Bahamas or The Keys say four months out of the year is an "end game" goal. We have learned from our 22 foot Venture that we need a head, and standing headroom. A shower will be crucial also. The EI31 seems to carry 45 Gallons of fresh water so I can't see it not having at least a hand held shower with a draining head. With her capacity, I guess one could always ad something. The Ericson's have a good reputation from what I can read and loyal following. I hear a great deal about the Cutter Vs. Sloop versions the sloop being called the Ericson 31 Cruiser. There are some slight differences in the accommodations but, I would be interested in getting your take on the difference between the two. Here is a link to the boat I'm currently evaluating. Ericson Independence 31 . Of course I know you can't tell a lot from a picture. But, you were the one that spotted the leaks around the mast on that Hunter Cherubini just from the presence of "Life Caulk" around the base on deck. That lead to a real close inspection and well... let's just say lead to the decision that she wasn't the boat for us. Though I still love the Cherubini lines... and the Ericson has the classic lines. The seem to be built well according to everything I've read and Bruce King has a great reputation as you know. I guess my over arching question is does she serve as the right "platform" to build on. I think you know what I mean by that. Some boats will be worth what they are worth no matter what you do. Others will appreciate because they are known to be seaworthy and solid. And I again, I stress I will never, ever, ever, ever consider a sailboat an investment (well maybe an investment in my sanity) but, not financial! Those who do are in it for the wrong reasons and fools. All boats cost money to buy, maintain and store or dock. It's the "cost of entry." The only reason I bring it up is to say, you want a boat that will hold it's value or even appreciate slightly with upgrades, if only for banking purposes. i.e. if you want to add radar some day it's nice to have the option to use a bit of your boats value to get a loan for 3k instead of hitting your savings... just saying. And in the event we had to sell... well you get it. The truth is we will probably kiss some frogs before we set sail for good. Fair Winds...

Thanks Justin... I have in fact, read this thread. I guess I'm looking for more experience based advise or suggestions. It would be great to hear from someone who live aboard one or did some extend cruising.

You should echo your questions at the large Ericson owners' site. www.Ericsonyachts.org Lots of owners there and lots of threads to explore.

Coincidentally, I just talked to a Mexican guy who has a beautiful 31. He has sailed it all the way down the Baja coast and back as well as to the US and back. I think he told me it was one of 70+ built. Really a pretty boat. I think you could do a lot worse. $9K? Sounds like a super bargain unless there is something terribly bad with it.

I just talked to the broker and he has a contract pending on it! That's the way it goes... but, I've learned a lot about the Ericson's and will put them on my list! Thanks everyone. I told the broker to let me know if the deal falls through. I agree $9k from $25K someone got a deal.

to sail, but at the moment most nautical terms are like a foreign language to me. I have recently settled on a certain plan for the future, having been thinking about doing it for a few years. I think it's important you know the basics of the plan so you can make an informed reply to my question. I'm not technically "in the market" yet, as I'd like to learn to sail first, but I'm starting my now.

I plan on for the purpose of living on it full time, and within two years I plan to start cruising around the world in it. Therefore, I need a that is fairly comfortable to live in, (I have simple needs, so I don't require any luxuries or anything), is "blue capable", (a term I've picked up in my reading, which I guess means is enough for and equipped to accommodate crew needs on trans-oceanic voyages), and since I will most often be sailing alone, will need to be something that can be sailed single-handedly fairly easily. No, I'm not capable of single-handing at the moment, but I will be .

I've been looking at the 34, as I've only read great things about this and it seems to meet all my requirements, (I'm not in any need of a great deal of speed), but a hundred thousand dollars is more than I was planning on spending on my first boat.

I recently came upon a boat called the Independence 31, which really caught my eye and is much closer to my desired , (around fifty thousand, a couple I've seen were much cheaper). However, I'm having a lot of trouble uncovering good information about this boat from people experienced with it. searches tend to bring up very little except for some technical specifications, which I'm ignorant to being able to translate into any kind of information about its seaworthiness. It seems to me to be a boat that meets all my requirements, except perhaps in the way of its capabilities.

I haven't seen anything referring to its abilities in rough waters or anything, neither for the positive nor the negative. I had read somewhere that 34 feet was about the smallest boat a person should be taking across the ocean, but I wasn't sure if that was just someone's opinion or whatever. Also, I'm ignorant to how much and capacity a boat should have for crossing oceans.

Anyway, that's a lot of information just to ask the simple question: Does anyone have an informed opinion about the Independence 31, or better yet some experience with it? I'm mostly curious about its capabilities, as everything else seems to be up to par for me on it. But then, I'm sure there are some folks here that have some strong opinions about it, and most of you are much more educated in whether or not this would be a good boat for my purposes. If you don't think this is a good boat for my purposes, do you have any suggestions?

(Here is a link to one that was for $34,000 on Yachtworld and has a lot of information about it, (gibberish to us un-edumacated folk...). )

Thanks in advance to any and all replies!

boat is a good sea berth.

In other words, make sure a settee is long enough to sleep on, and that you would be able to add lee cloths to it. (The center of the boat has the least motion in a seaway)

recently in FL for $17500 after they gave up trying to sell it for 29500. That was a real bargain. They are well built, but will be slower than many of the fin racer/cruiser types in light air. The are good , but I have always shared your concern that they are just way overpriced. The is very utilitarian, the systems are minimal and they have quality problems just like anyone else. (I was looking at boats in several years ago and asked if I could get up onto a new PacSeacraft that had just arrived... no one had even done the post cleanup. There was severe gel coat cracking/shrinkage on the aft area obviously from way too hot a resin, gel coat mix, I'm sure this was repaired before anyone else saw it, but makes you wonder how the resin mix in the was on that boat! obviously the auto mixer was not working properly)
25-05-2009, 15:24
better, but as far as everything else goes I think the Ericson is a better boat for me. , of course, being a huge aspect of that! are even less), then that'll save me a minimum of $75,000 to $100,000 compared to the Pacific Seacraft, allowing me to have more to outfit the boat and make any , etc.

The one I would like to buy, of course, is the most expensive one I've seen for here: . But even that is less than $50,000.

Obviously I'm not really ready to buy a boat yet, though I'm considering it to liveabord instead of paying rent. If I can find a near LA I can buy the boat and between slip rental and the payments on the boat it will cost less than the average apartment for rent in LA. This seems like a good plan to me, because then I can be putting towards the boat rather than an apartment, getting it paid off sooner, but I'm not sure owning a boat without any knowledge of yet is such a good idea.

Anyway, thanks again for the replies, any more information that anyone has on these boats would be greatly appreciated, since as I mentioned there doesn't seem to be much information on the about them, (or maybe I'm just not looking hard enough...)

Boat: My last boat was FF1058, working on the next one...
and am probably interested in the same topics you are. What I have come across more than once, both online and in , is a "blue water boat" needs to have both the tankage and to support a significant time at sea and in areas. Something on the order months, not weeks. While most folks state that you'll spend most of your time on the hook or tied up, there will be long passages, such as from North America to the which can run from 20 to 30 days plus...

I guess the point is that one will need to run an regularly for a number of things such as , fridge/freezers, running water makers and the like. Additionally one will need to be able to store the , spares, tools and paper for a similar amount of time.

At least these are some of the points I'm considering in my own search.

Best of luck,
Ray

and water on a boat. So, even though I have read what the capacities are on the Ericson Independence 31, I cannot translate this knowledge into whether or not it's sufficient for my purposes. The water capacity is 45 gallons and the fuel is 35. This sounds like a lot to me, but the Pacific Seacraft has a water capacity of 80 gallons and 75 gallons for fuel, (nearly twice the capacity of the Ericson Independence 31). Granted, the Ericson is a smaller boat, so it probably requires less fuel to operate, (only an assumption); but it's only by 3 feet in length, so I don't think that that's substantially enough to say it requires half the fuel and water capacities for ocean passages.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but it seems to me that these capacities may be somewhat lacking in the Ericson, but hopefully somebody can prove me wrong in that assumption. I've seen the Ericson referred to as a "performance blue water cruiser", but that may only be their opinion and may not be taking into account the capacities. Since you're looking at the 35 footer, your capacities are probably greater than that of the 31, and possibly more suitable for ocean crossings.

Additionally, I'm ignorant to the capacities of the Ericson 31; whether or not it has enough stowage for all the proper and extra for safe ocean passages, not to mention weight capacity for all that plus stores of , etc. It's a , but if it is a true blue water cruiser I would think it would have accomodations for the necessary and storages of supplies. I will definitely have to confirm this with somebody experienced before I make a final decision, though.

Boat: O'day 322 "Southern Comfort"
33' Clipper.

Love the clipper bow and the transom hung .

As for tankage, the 35 gallons of deisel is plenty. The water is a bit low, but many known purpose built boats do not come standard with the 100 gallon most recommend. You will just have to store more water in containers below and on if you making real long passages. It will be hard to get huge water as standard on any blue water boat of that size from the factory. Tania Aebi circumnavigated on a Contessa 26 with only an 11 gallon water tank (carried lots of water in jerry cans).

the "ultimate crusing boat" your first boat would likely be a mistake anyway. A 31 footer like the I31 can take you anywhere. It will be slower and less comfortable than a 40 footer, but you will have just as much fun in it. Set your immediate goals more short term. Maybe and cruising in or the , you will then learn if you truly want to continue the cruising lifestyle and learn what is important to you. Frankly, when I cruised in my 30 footer it was more about the cruising and when I cruised in my larger boats it became more about the boats!

shackles or an . Before you plunk down the price for a boat, be prepared to spend alot more than that.

Now watermakers, those are expensive, plus you probably want at least one panel to keep it running.

Ericson 31 Independence

Ericson 31 Independence is a 31 ′ 0 ″ / 9.5 m monohull sailboat designed by Bruce King and built by Ericson Yachts between 1977 and 1981.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

  14. Considering an Ericson Independence 31

    147. Macgregor V222 Kentucky Lake. Oct 10, 2019. #1. Greetings Ericson Owners - I'm considering an Ericson Independence 31as a potential cruising sailboat. I'll give a bit of background and what we expect from our next boat... or as we refer to it, the "big boat." We are currently sailing a Venture 222 that we lovingly restored over two years.

  15. Ericson Independence 31

This sounds like a lot to me, but the Pacific Seacraft has a water capacity of 80 gallons and 75 gallons for fuel, (nearly twice the capacity of the Ericson Independence 31). Granted, the Ericson is a smaller boat, so it probably requires less fuel to operate, (only an assumption); but it's only by 3 feet in length, so I don't think that that's ...
