Harbour Town is “must do” – a great place for the whole family to spend a whole day. It is the center of activity within The Sea Pines Resort.

Things To Do

Start your day in a rocking chair under the Liberty Oak, an ancient tree that was saved from destruction by Charles Fraser during the construction of Harbour Town. Visit the Charles Fraser Statue, a tribute to the man who conceived and constructed this island’s first resort and residential plantation. Let your kids vent their energy at the Gregg Russell Playground .

There are also over 20 shops for your browsing pleasure and numerous restaurants that feature everything from seafood to steak.

Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum

Climb the 114-step Harbour Town Lighthouse Museum , Hilton Head’s 47-year-old signature landmark. When you reach the top, you must go outside and take in the 360-degree view. Shop in the charming Top of the Lighthouse Shoppe , and don’t miss their new the ground floor Maritime Gift Galley, a unique nautical shop and bookstore.

On the Pier

On the pier, you can select from any number of activities out on the water – pirate sails for the kids, sailing  aboard the trimaran “Sumo” , nature tours , parasailing , wave running , boat rentals , charter fishing , and dinner cruises .   All ages would enjoy a leisurely scenic nature cruise aboard the “Vagabond “, a dinner cruise aboard the “Spirit of Harbour Town” , or a crabbing adventure aboard the “Tammy Jane” .

At the Nature Center, located between the bakery and CQ’s, you can make reservations for any number of guided nature tours as well as activities for the youngsters. It also has live animal exhibits, hands-on displays, and nature-related merchandise.

Unless you’re staying within Sea Pines, there is a fee to pass through the gates, but it’s good for the whole day.

Overall rating

We love storing our boat here for a week every summer when we stay in Sea Pines. Beautiful area, clean grounds, and since its in a resort, it's not overcrowded or dirty. The water is usually pretty clean. Easy access to fuel and a hose at your boat slip. Lots of restaurants and shops surrounding the basin and a lovely faux lighthouse you can go to the top of.

Tickets are non-refundable unless your tour is cancelled by Hilton Head Dolphin Tours, but you may reschedule your tour with at least 24 HOURS notice prior to the scheduled departure time. You may also request a voucher to use at a later date if cancellation is made prior to 24 hours of your departure time. We will NOT honor rescheduling or vouchers within 24 hours of your departure time.

Cancellation due to weather is at our Captain’s discretion only! 

We will contact you on the phone number provided on the day of your tour if there are any weather concerns/cancellations. The Captain keeps a diligent eye on the weather and will inform you in ample time to get you rescheduled. Weather cancellations are 100% refundable if rescheduling is not possible. Isolated/pop-up thunderstorms are a way of life here in the summer months and they may delay us for a few minutes or miss us entirely, so please show up unless you hear from us.

First Look: Lynx Expedition Yacht by Owen Clarke

Interparus in touch! We have found an interesting boat for travel, which will expand the horizons of the yachtsman. Apparently, the creators of the yacht decided to present a boat that can show itself perfectly both in the hot tropics and in the harsh conditions of the north.

Real "Lynx"

The 15m Lynx by Owen Clarke is an aluminum expedition yacht with a lifting keel. Among its main features are increased impact resistance of the hull and high cross-country ability.

The average speed is also on the level. Under sail can reach more than 8 knots. At the same time, the yacht has enough diesel fuel to cover 3,000 miles with a large margin. Agree, the result is worthy. A large supply of fuel will also allow the vessel not to suffer from a lack of speed in light winds or calm. So the boat will be able to reach its destination on time.

The ship's hull has a large width at the stern, double rudders and helms, as well as a fairly impressive forecastle. Another feature of the boat is the ⅞ rig. On board there is a whole set of staysails for all occasions. 

Idea and concept

For sleep and rest there are two double aft cabins. There is also a spacious galley to port and a saloon. The cabin can accommodate four more people. 

The place in front of the main bulkhead is equipped with a workshop and an extensive pantry. The result is an interesting interior arrangement that is uniquely different from standard charter yachts. The reason for this is in the specifics of using the yacht. 

According to the initial idea of the customer, the yacht should be managed by a minimum number of crew. Ideally, only the customer and partner. Plus, the boat must have high autonomy and the ability to do without calls to ports and marinas for a long time. The result of Owen Clarke's work was the Lynx yacht. 

The reason for this not the most standard layout was also the ideas of the customer. The salon is moved forward, the cabins are at the stern, and the workshop and pantry are located closer to the forecastle. 

Though conceived as a private yacht, the Lynx is one of the few boats of this size that fully complies with MGN 280 standards for commercial/charter sailing in all oceans and polar regions. The construction of this yacht began in February this year at the shipyard Koopmans Kasko in North Holland.

Two new Owen Clarke explorer yachts for high latitudes cruising

The Owen Clark design studio currently has two bespoke yachts in build, both featuring a host of elements designed to make them proper explorer yachts

A well established and regarded name in the offshore racing world, the Owen Clarke studio has in recent years been making a reputation for its bespoke explorer yacht creations. The most notable is arguably the 2018-launched 20m Qilak which was the cover model and main feature boat in Yachting World’s May 2019 issue.

It helps that naval architect Merf Owen has plenty of high latitudes cruising experience, and that his wife, Ashley Perrin, is an ice pilot and expedition leader who has been taking yachts to high latitudes for nearly a decade. The couple have just completed a circumnavigation of Newfoundland via Greenland and Labrador.

Owen Clarke currently has two notable alloy explorer projects in construction which have spawned from Qilak in terms of looks, layouts and learnings: a lift keel 15m and a centreboarded 18m.

This 15m Explorer Yacht Lynx is very much a descendant of Qilak , and is even dubbed ‘little Qilak’, thanks to its similar looks, its hydraulic lifting keel, twin rudders and pilothouse. The latter is expansive enough to incorporate a watchkeeping station and a pilot berth.

A multipurpose and multi-climates yacht, Lynx is both a bluewater cruiser and a high lats explorer, capable of transiting the Northwest Passage. A private yacht designed for a Swiss owner, it complies with the MGN 280 code to allow for commercial/charter voyages in all oceans and polar regions.

“ Lynx represents the latest in small explorer yacht design, aimed specifically at families/small groups for short-handed, fast passages and with the ability to then remain in remote areas without support for prolonged periods,” Allen Clarke explains.

This is a true explorer yacht in that it is ice rated and built accordingly with double frames and an ice belt in the hull. The tank capacities are particularly capacious and help give an extensive cruising range under motor of over 3,000 miles.

Clarke explains how they can use VPP programming based on motorsailing and when the engine goes on to help calculate fuel/tankage: “It’s the same stuff we use on race boats but here we’re using it for a remote cruising boat.”

The designers’ assumptions were made on having a watermaker, 800Ah batteries and an 80A 24V alternator. Four major passages were analysed, ranging from the 2,000 miles of a Northwest Passage to the 7,500 miles from Europe to Montevideo, Uruguay, as well as spending up to 60 days aboard. Fuel usage from motoring, charging batteries and heating for the Reflex stove were calculated leading to the conclusion that the spec for 1,570lt of diesel with 200lt reserve in the day tank seems more than ample for this design.

Designed for extended remote cruising including a circumnavigation, OC188 is six months into its aluminium construction at alloy experts KM Yachtbuilders in Makkum. Its experienced owner wanted an easily handled yacht with good performance together with the volume that could accommodate an owner’s cabin and three double guest cabins.

A low aspect ballasted keel with lifting centreboard helps provide the desired shoal draught of 1.4m while giving sailing performance and pointing abilities when lowered to 3.8m. Meanwhile twin rudders help allow for the yacht to lay up safely.

The decision between this and a full lifting keel such as aboard Lynx – also designed my Owen Clark – comes down to the added performance benefits of a deeper keel and whether you can live with the keel case in the interior, says Clarke. In this case it was not deemed necessary to impact the interior to that extent, especially as the owners plan to spend long periods of time aboard.

The OC 188 is a distinctive, purposeful looking design. Standouts include the amount of covered and protected space and the solar capacity on the pilothouse and fixed bimini. The aft cockpit and transom design also looks innovative as it includes a large lower deck to store a solid tender (the owner did not want a garage such as aboard Qilak). Instead the dinghy is launched via an Atlas heavy lift carbon davit, which can mount in several locations. This then leaves an expansive aft terrace for lounging at anchor.

Ice-Reinforced Hull with Lifting Keel

The hull is fully optimized for Arctic navigation, featuring ice reinforcements such as ice girders and extra-high half frames from bow to beam. The lifting keel (1.6 to 3.2 m draft) has a lead bulb; the reinforced keel case spans the entire height of the hull from bilge to deck.

A Powerful Sail Plan

The rig consists of a strong and light carbon-fiber mast with rod rigging (Axxon Composites), outriggers and carbon spi-pole (Sparcraft). The sailing wardrobe include North 3Di main and J2 as well as Gennaker and Tradewind. Most lines are led to the cockpit winches (Antal, 4 power, 2 manual).

Tough, Strong and Efficient Systems

Two independent and integrated power units provide clean and efficient propulsion (range over 5000 NM) and electric power. Anchor, windlass, bow-thruster, heating, water and electric systems are sized for very heavy use.

Construction then commences, covering insulation and interior finishing, culminating in the first launch in our harbour. Product Overview

The decision between this and a full lifting keel such as aboard Lynx – also designed my Owen Clark – comes down to the added performance benefits of a deeper keel and whether you can live with the keel case in the interior, says Clarke. In this case it was not deemed necessary to impact the interior to that extent, especially as the owners plan to spend long periods of time aboard.

Where Qilak was designed with a tall rig to sail quickly between the far north and south, here that is not so relevant and cruising ease and comfort take priority. The carbon mast has triple headstays to make it easy to move through the gears and set reaching sails.

Another key difference over the 15m is to be found in the pilothouse which is large enough to act as the primary saloon for eight guests plus a navstation. The galley to starboard is then split on two levels. A workshop or multifunctional hold with space for a trail bike can be accessed through the interior or a central cockpit hatch, and there’s dedicated sports equipment stowage plus a large foc’sle that can house a second inflatable tender.

Jan 31, 2023 - This is a 15m aluminium sailboat by designers Owen Clarke originally created for blue water cruising, the Northwest Passage and high latitude sailing in ice. The yacht is now available as a semi-custom or as a stock design with in-build support if required. The stock boat is an EC compliant blue water cruiser.
