The Silver Arrow: Mercedes Signs Off on the First Granturismo Yacht

The Silver Arrows Marine‘s Granturismo yacht tender concept has reached an important new milestone in its development, with the signing-off of the final design.

The design encapsulates all the radical new thinking behind the project in a yacht of exceptional looks with an innovative layout and never-seen-before features. The debut Silver Arrow brings a new elegance and dynamism to motor yachts in the 14m class thanks to Silver Arrows Marine’s design partner, Mercedes-Benz Style.

“With Mercedes-Benz Style we really have made the first Granturismo of the seas, as one look at the finished design will confirm,” said Silver Arrows Marine Chairman Ron Gibbs.

“There will be nothing else like it on the water with such beauty and so many innovations. It will have everything that people expect of a luxury yacht bearing the Mercedes-Benz Style name.” The design freeze comes after 12 months of intensive work to test and validate every aspect of the yacht’s functionality and performance. From the start of the project, development has followed the same methodology used in the automotive industry, with clay models and rigorous testing of prototypes.

Ron Gibbs added: “This process has taken time but by following automotive prototyping practices we can be sure all crucial development has taken place before production begins, not after, as is often the case with motor yachts. We go into the next phase leading up to production confident of achieving our aims.”

The Silver Arrows Marine Granturismo superyacht tender realizes the dream of a team of marine industry specialists with backgrounds from superyachts to Formula One motor racing. All share a passion to build a “clean sheet” 14m motor yacht that relies on blending marine and automotive technologies to make “a small motor yacht built like a superyacht”.

The Silver Arrows Granturismo Granturismo yacht tender concept has an open-plan cabin offering unprecedented space, light and flexibility for the boat’s size. Unique features include unhindered access to the water from a “terrace by the pool” and a unique rear seating arrangement, maximizing relaxing space. Inside and out, the design, detailing, materials and colourways are more familiar from a luxury car than a yacht.

“Our motor yacht is about comfort and functionality in every detail,” added Ron Gibbs. “In this we follow the lead of the most recent range of Mercedes-Benz models – some of the people who worked on these cars are also working with us on the new yacht, including Gorden Wagener, Head of Mercedes-Benz Design.”

Further details of the finalized design and the next update on the Granturismo yacht tender concept’s journey from dream to reality will be presented at the Monaco Yacht Show (25-28 September).

Silver Arrow 460GT yacht tour: The €2.9m Mercedes supercar of the seas

At the recent 2022 Palma Boat Show, MBY editor Hugo Andreae took the chance to tour the Mercedes-designed Silver Arrow 460GT.

The Silver Arrow 460GT was launched in 2016 , so we’ve been waiting a long time to get on board this Mercedes-Benz designed speedboat, but it was well worth the wait.

Silver Arrows Marine is based in the UK, but the Arrow 460GT is built in Finland at Baltic Yachts using a lightweight material called Sprint, which is quieter and more forgiving than carbon fibre.

The first thing you notice before you even step on board is the very curvaceous transom and sprawling cockpit, which is accessed via a telescopic passarelle.

As if that wasn’t impressive enough, there’s also a telescopic bathing platform, with a built-in bathing ladder as well.

To live up to the Mercedes-Benz name, it has to perform, and to that end, Silver Arrows Marine has fitted a pair of Yanmar 460hp shaft-drive engines, which give a top speed of 33 knots.

They offer a more powerful twin 560hp version, which pushes the needle even further to top speed of 38 knots.

The Silver Arrow 460GT goes from interesting to remarkable when you move down the three glass steps into the interior, which is surrounded by a forward glass panel that can lift up on electronic struts to let fresh air and natural light in.

However, that’s not all, as it can be closed off and turned into a double bed, giving overnight accommodation should you desire.

You could spend a lifetime just learning all the different features and elements of this boat, from the hidden toilet to the pop-up cleats on the foredeck.

Mercedes-Benz Reveals Design for Its First-Ever Superyacht

There’s arguably nowhere in the world that speaks to luxury and wealth more than the French Riviera. So it was appropriate that on the crystal clear, tranquil waters of the Côte d’Azur, Mercedes-Benz recently announced its entry into the world of superyachts. Like Bugatti and Aston Martin before it, the German car manufacturer is bringing its industry-leading innovations and opulent designs to the seas. The Arrow460-Granturismo, created in partnership with U.K.-based Silver Arrow Marine, borrows heavily from Mercedes-Benz’s long history of ergonomics, attention to detail, and revolutionary designs. “This new motor yacht, with its emotional and high-tech features, embodies our Mercedes-Benz design philosophy of sensual purity and is a perfect expression of modern luxury,” said Gorden Wagener, vice president of design at Daimler AG, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz, in a statement.

A look at the Arrow460-Granturismo from the stern.

At first glance, it’s easy to compare the Arrow460-Granturismo to the company’s flagship S-Class cars. The long foredeck and arched roofline also echo the looks of iconic Benz models such as the 2011 SLS AMG Roadster and 1954 300 SL. But the Granturismo borrows other touches from its asphalt-based cousins, too. Much like the brand’s newer motor vehicles, the superyacht can electronically dim its windows to protect passengers from the sun.

The sleek 46-foot craft, which accommodates ten people, has a massive windscreen that can be raised to create a protective archway, shielding passengers from UV rays while allowing ocean breezes to cool them off. The Arrow460-Granturismo is propelled by a 960-horsepower engine, moving it up to 40 knots (46 m.p.h.), and has a Twin Disc Express Joystick System, providing more hands-on control of the yacht’s movement. Further technical details will be available this month; the Arrow460-Granturismo will go into production later this year.

Almost 900bhp, a £2m price tag and answering to the name of a Silver Arrow – it must be the F1-car-for-the-road Mercedes-Benz will be unveiling this September. But how many hypercars have an anchor, sunbeds and a ‘terrace by the sea’? 

If Mercedes were to design a posh motor yacht it would be…exactly like this. Got an S-class ? You’ll feel right at home here. Park your Mercedes-AMG S63 alongside the Arrow460-Granturismo and the only problem will be telling them apart (note, the boat floats beautifully, the car less so). 

Yachts from car companies are nothing new… 

And for good reason – brand extensions are rarely as fast, sexy and exciting after all. Even Mercedes, in the distant past, has made waves. The three points of its star do represent land, sea and air, after all. Bugatti , Aston Martin and Lexus are three more that have recently taken the plunge. 

Often they are just dream boats, or marketing exercises with no more input from the car firm than colour and trim. The Merc is rather different. It was designed by Mercedes-Benz Style at its Como studios in Italy – under the direction of Daimler AG design supremo Gorden Wagener – at the behest of a UK registered start-up company called Silver Arrows Marine. 

Silver Arrows Marine’s big idea was to reinvent the 14m motor yacht as something more innovative and usable than just a noisy and uncomfortable wave-crusher using design, features and processes from the motor industry. Top speed was to be less important than comfort and refinement, so more GT than GT3. Hence the first Arrow460’s billing as the ‘Granturismo of the seas’. 

With a lot of never-before-done boaty stuff and, unusual in yacht terms, a prototype stage (usually with boats the first customer is the guinea pig), the R&D has been protracted – the idea first surfaced in 2008. It took a clean sheet of paper and a ‘brain’s trust’ of eminent yacht designers and partner firms like M-B Style, but the yacht is now in production. 

With twin diesels and 880hp, the first fully-loaded Edition 1 costs from €2.5 million plus taxes (call it £2m in sterling) and the target is to have four boats delivered by the end of 2018. 

You could buy a real Silver Arrows for that! 

Supercharged 1930s Mercedes racing cars are notoriously tricky in the wet. Not so their 2017 namesake which I am in Cap Ferrat on the Med to put through its paces for CAR magazine.  

Two million quid’s worth of luxury yacht is not my usual on-water experience, but, heck, I’ve got a dinghy and done my Powerboat Level 2. Believe me, you don’t need any of it. 

This is one very  easy and smooth boat to drive – literally child’s play. A lot of it is down to an Easy Docking joystick system that coordinates prop and bow thrusters with perfect precision. No more falling-about-laughing bystanders when you try to squeeze into that berth… 

At speed it’s mechanically quiet and smooth with a pillowy ride through moderately choppy waters. There’s no crashing and banging, plus the real bonus that you don’t get wet. All very relaxed and civilised. Top whack is 38 knots but at a 24-knot cruise you certainly won’t spill your G&T plus you will have enough range for the 160 miles across the Med from the Cote d’Azur to Corsica. And if you live in Eastbourne rather than the Cote d’Azur? Bad luck. 

Mercedes Silver Arrow Marine Yacht: what’s it like to live with?

You can moor up and try that ‘terrace by the sea’. It’s a hydraulically-extending swim platform that slides out of the stern, so you can plop straight into the water.

Then maybe some supper – there are kitchen facilities but mostly it’s a wine fridge – around a large glass table, with the fully retractable side windows down and the vast glass sunroof lifted up high on hydraulic struts. Think gentle sea breezes filling the cabin and harbour lights twinkling across the water…

Not romantic enough? Push another button and the table disappears and out slides a king-size double bed for a night under the stars. 

The open-plan ‘loft-style’ below decks area is a revelation with its Mercedes concept car-style design and Alcantara and mesh fabric materials aplenty. There’s even a big shower room. And your millions buys lots of goodies: JBL and Bose entertainment systems, electronically dimming glass (like the Merc SL’s MagicSky ) for UV protection and privacy, and of course full air-con – the eyeball air vents are in fact the only actual Merc component on board. 

Who says cars and boats don’t mix? It’s bit of a stunner we reckon and a shiny silvery revelation among all those lookalike aggressive and very white sports cruisers. But who will buy it? These days the world’s oceans – sorry, glamour hot-spots – are full of superyachts and they all need tenders. (Sir) Philip Green is not going to get out to Lionheart in a rowing boat is he? 

With all it has going for it, the Arrow460 is far more than just a tender, though, doubling up as a dayboat for partying (it can take 10 people) or an all-mod-cons overnighter for two people. 

A true Mercedes? If it looks like one and swims like one…

Launched by Silver Arrows Marine in 2015 at the Monaco Yacht Show, the Arrow460-Granturismo remains the consummate commuter. Named after the Mercedes Silver Arrow racecars of the 1930s, its lines and proportions purposely resemble a Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe. The signature “trunk” in the bow, scooped areas in the hull sides, and side windows come from the drawing boards of Mercedes-Benz Style, Daimler’s in-house design division. The minimalist helm has a retractable console and joystick docking, along with throttles that push the Arrow460 to its 38-knot top end. The boat’s interior is spacious, with cool features like dimmable side windows that open like a car, and a fully opening front window that provides access to the bow. The 3-D wood laminate and top-quality leathers make you feel like you’re in a luxury car. The first 460 had a silver exterior, but Silver Arrows Marine is now offering the boat in Pearl White as well as red, yellow, and gray. The 460 was designed primarily as a commuter, though a couple could use it for day trips. Either way, the boat turns heads wherever it goes.

Built by the Monaco-based Silver Arrow Marine, the motor yacht has a price tag of €2.5 million, plus taxes.

The Granturismo Experience

And now those lucky enough to be considering buying this 14 metre yacht are being given the chance to taste life on board.

The Granturismo Experience, which starts in 2017 in Monte Carlo, takes invited guests on a “truly gran turismo journey”, on land by Mercedes-Benz cars and on sea by Mercedes, the first Silver Arrows Marine motor yacht.

According to Silver Arrow, “it is a day being seduced by emotive design, exquisite materials, and a completely fresh approach to lifestyle living on board a 14m yacht.”

The announcement comes as Silver Arrows Marine made its US debut at the My Yacht Miami event, which ran from 1-4 December 2016.

This is one of a series of invitation-only luxury brand events held around the world on superyachts.

The first ARROW460-Granturismo, which is aptly named Mercedes, was warmly welcomed at the Monaco Yacht Show in September.

Silver Arrows Marine’s chief executive officer, Jacopo Spadolini, said: “ARROW460-Granturismo has had a rapturous reception but like all truly innovative products the yacht needs to be experienced first-hand to be fully understood.”

“The Granturismo Experience days will allow people to really get to know about “Mercedes” the yacht, but also who we are and how we put the customer first in everything we do,” he added.

The ARROW460-Granturismo is launching with an Edition 1 run of 10 fully-specified models.

The ARROW460-Granturismo is described as the “mould breaking first model” from the partnership between Mercedes Benz and Silver Arrows Marine.

Nicknamed the ‘Silver Arrow of the Seas’ after the legendary Mercedes Silver Arrows racing cars, the 706 kW (960 hp) yacht is embarking on sea trials out of Nice, France.

The motor yacht is 14 metres long

This is ahead of the final commissioning of the interior due in May, when full technical and commercial details will be released.

Unveiled on the Côte d’Azur during the launch of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet, the first pre-production yacht is named Mercedes.

The Silver Arrows Marine Chairman, Ron Gibbs said: “Almost everything about ARROW460-Granturismo is unique, from its concept to the smallest bespoke detail. It is a motor yacht with a personality that truly embraces life, combining the best marine engineering with the inspired innovations and elegance that the world associates with Mercedes-Benz.”

“By merging marine and automotive worlds, with their respective design language, technologies and ideas, we have created a new standard of motor yacht, unlike all others,” he stated.

On the water

The power yacht has a long foredeck, a flowing, arched roofline and a slightly descending rear, giving it classic automobile proportions. It has an open-plan layout, and is rated for up to 10 passengers.

The  design allows free-flowing access from stem to stern, while the cabin is able to transform into luxury overnight accommodation for two if required. Innovative features include a class-first retractable ‘terrace by the sea’ in the stern, built-in sun deck and double-console cockpit.

Electronically-dimming ‘smart’ glass is used for the windows and roof of the cabin, the smoothly arching design of which clearly links ARROW460-Granturismo with the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz luxury cars.

Just as in a luxury car, the side windows open at the press of a button, as does the large ‘windscreen’: the glass rises up to create a ‘pergola’ effect that opens the dining and lounge area to sea breezes while retaining UV protection.

A smooth, seamless decking finish is achieved throughout the yacht thanks to an innovative new composite material.

Just as with a car, a system of prototyping was adopted during development. The state-of-the-art hull design has been shaped as much for comfort and ease of handling as speed by hydrodynamicists from the renowned naval architects Van Oossanen.

Powered by two Yanmar diesel engines of 353 kW (480 hp) each, ARROW460-Granturismo is designed to achieve a top speed of 40 knots in light load conditions, with a cruising speed of 26 knots (figures to be confirmed).

The yacht is equipped with an array of the latest technology, including, as standard, the Twin Disc Express Joystick System.

The Vice President Design Daimler AG, Gorden Wagener said: “Together with Silver Arrows Marine we have managed to develop a totally new boat concept. The ‘Silver Arrow of the Seas’ embodies Mercedes-Benz’s progressive, dynamic design idiom of sensual purity on the water and weds it to perfect functionality. ARROW460-Granturismo is sure to cause a stir on the seas and at marinas throughout the world.”

The first ARROW460-Granturismo has been constructed by Decision SA, a Groupe Carboman company near Lausanne in Switzerland.

Following its unveiling in the South of France, the first ARROW460-Granturismo will be starring at selected yachting events over the coming months prior to the start of production later this year.

Hitting the Water: The Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows Yacht

At the 2012 Monaco Yacht Show, the public got its first glimpse of what the car designers at Mercedes-Benz have been up to lately. They’ve been busy creating a new yacht concept, to bring the distinctive style of high-end Mercedes cars to the water.

However, the German automobile manufacturer’s involvement in the project was strictly limited to aesthetics. In addition to shaping the exterior, Mercedes was responsible for the layout and the interior design on the vessel, whereas the engineering and construction was handled by the UK-based boat-building company Silver Arrows Marine.

While the craft doesn’t have any bonnet vents or gullwing doors, it nonetheless draws styling cues from road-going Mercedes. For instance, the shape of the cockpit definitely bears a resemblance to the curved windscreen of a CL 550 or E-class coupé. Moreover, the overall design of the motor yacht is a tribute to the legendary Silver Arrows, the highly successful line of Mercedes-Benz racing cars produced in the 1930s.

Measuring 14m long, the luxury yacht has enough space for overnight cruises, but it appears that the ‘Silver Arrow of the seas’ is mainly a day-time boat – ideal for a lazy day at sea. A nice touch is the glass roof that doesn't just offer spectacular ocean views, but also helps passengers get a decent indoor suntan, while travelling at thrilling speeds.

The price for this marine vessel still remains a mystery, but it's likely to be at odds with the word 'inexpensive'.

Mercedes-Benz Hits The Water With A New Luxury Yacht Concept

Before heading to the Paris Motor Show to reveal the electric version of the B-class, Mercedes-Benz stopped at the Monaco Yacht Show last week to debut renderings of an unusual project for the automaker: a new yacht concept.

Mercedes-Benz Style is collaborating with Silver Arrows Marine, a new collective of marine architects and engineers, to create a motor yacht that brings the style of the luxury automobiles to the water.

Details on the design are scarce so far. The yacht is narrow and, at 46 feet long, relatively short.

It is inspired by the Silver Arrow, a highly successful line of racing cars produced by Mercedes-Benz in the 1930s.

The Silberfeil, or Silver Arrow, was a 1930s race car that inspired the design.

So far, only renderings of the "Silver Arrow of the seas" have been released.

Mercedes-Benz Style chose the materials and color combinations for the interior.

Silver Arrow Marine is in charge of the technical aspects.

The idea is to apply characteristics of Mercedes-Benz interiors to a different sort of vehicle.

The result is a sleek, luxurious yacht.

It is due on the market sometime in 2013.

Now for a yacht already in the water.
