Aboard one of our two boats, you can enjoy one of our custom private day sail charters. Tour Newport Harbor, with its classic and mega-yachts and picturesque surroundings before venturing onto Narragansett Bay. Our two sailboats are icons of the Newport Sailing fleet and of Narragansett Bay. Lyra is our 44-foot Reliance sailboat and Wren is our 35-foot Allied Seabreeze. With a capacity of up to 6 guests each, both boats sail on daily charters from Newport RI, beginning mid-April through the end of October. We offer private 90-minute, two-hour, three-hour, half and full-day sailing charters. Private sailing charters in Newport are a unique and enjoyable experience. Sailing in Newport with just your friends, family or coworkers is the quintessential Newport activity, fun and memorable for all!  Bachelorette parties, birthday parties, sails with family and friends or corporate outings are all great ideas to for a private charter.

What’s the difference between a Private Charter and a Public Sail?  Other than having the boat to yourselves, a private charter also allows you to have food and drink delivered or brought on board, listen to your own music, etc. See our FAQ section for more information on food and drink.

Guests are welcome to participate in the sailing or sit back and relax.  No sailing experience is required.

Private Sailing Charters:

Choose a boat, date, and scheduled departure time..

We have three sailboats, Aquidneck, Sightsailer, and Starlight, all of which may be chartered for private sails. Starlight sails with a maximum of 6 guests, Sightsailer sails with a maximum of 13 and Aquidneck can take up to 49 people sailing!

In order to book a charter, determine the number of people in your party and choose the boat whose capacity closely matches your number of guests.

Please note that boat capacity numbers are determined by the Coast Guard and cannot be exceeded under any circumstance.  The Coast Guard considers every human being on the boat to be a person regardless of age, so a two-year-old counts the same as an adult in the total guest count.

Next, determine the desired date and choose one of the boat’s scheduled departure times for your sail.

You may see each boat’s scheduled sailing departures in the Schedules & Rates section. To book a private charter you need to choose one of the boat’s scheduled departures.

Bachelorette and bachelor parties in Newport on one of our boats are always a blast.  Sightsailer is our most popular boat for bachelorette and bachelor outings.  Sightsailer sails with a maximum of 13 guests and offers an exceptionally smooth, spirited and fun sail.   Food and drink for private charters may be easily arranged.  Plug your favorite music into our onboard stereo, or enjoy the peace and tranquility of Newport Harbor and Narragansett Bay.  Groups of 6 or less may privately charter Starlight.  For groups larger than 13, we suggest joining a public sail on Aquidneck.

Built in 1992 by Scarano Boat Building, Schooner Madeleine is a 72 foot sailing beauty. The classic yacht Rum Runner II was built in 1929 at the height of prohibition. Yes. We use a system called Cognito to ensure that payment information matches the renter's identity. We also require renters taking out a captained boat to be at least 18 years old and on a bareboat to be at least 25 years old.

Yes! Listing a boat is completely free. We only take a commission when your boat is rented. We only make money when you do!

What if I'm not comfortable having a renter drive my boat?

Perrin was amazing! The whole process was such a breeze and we had a great couple of hours out on the water. Really knowledgeable (and we tested him haha) and had great insight about the area and the other boats around us. Would definitely recommend!

Charlie and his wife were fantastic. Very professional, very knowledgeable and incredibly warm and inviting. They were especially awesome with our two little girls, with lots of extras for the girls to enjoy. The boat was great. Spacious and even bigger with more seating than in pictures. Captain Charles is THE BEST!! My husband, 3 children and I booked this and it was hands down the highlight of vacation for each one of us. Captain Charles (or Uncle CC as my oldest has now named him) went above and beyond to make sure the kids had fun, felt comfortable and we’re safe. He had numerous life jacket to choose from and let them jump off the boat AND had a huge raft he tied out there for the kids. We had no idea about this and the kids cannot stop talking about it. We all loved touring through the harbor and hearing so many interesting bits from Charles about places, boats and homes we were seeing. It was fascinating. Captain Charles could not have been nicer to work with and meet. His communication was top notch from days before our ride together. Once on the boat, he has a natural way of making you feel like you’ve been friends for years. I cannot say enough wonderful things about our time with Captain Charles on his boat, which was beautiful and the cleanest boat.

Family of four had a fantastic time boating with Captain Charles! Harbor tour was fun and informative and dropping anchor in Mackerel Cove to swim and have lunch was perfect! Boat was roomy, very clean and had shade and sun so everyone was happy! Best day ever… we all highly recommend!

Newport Harbor Boat Owners Confront Rent Spike on Offshore Moorings

Newport Harbor mooring owners could soon see their monthly payments increase by four or five times the amount they’ve paid for years.

That depends on the Newport Beach Harbor Commission, which is set to discuss increasing monthly rental rates and make a recommendation to the city council at its meeting on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

A mooring is a permanent structure for owners to store boats when they aren’t in use. Offshore moorings are placed away from land-connecting docks, requiring boaters to use a kayak or dinghy to get to their boat from dry land.

Mooring permit holders pay a monthly rental fee for their boat storage. The rental amount depends on the size of the mooring, meaning larger spots cost more to accommodate a larger vessel.

But the new proposed mooring rent increases outline changes that some mooring holders say they won’t be able to afford.

And, they add, discriminate against moorings as opposed to docks, which are not seeing that kind of increase. 

The current rate is $3.34 per linear foot per month. That means a 40-foot mooring costs about $133 each month. 

Under the proposed increases, a 40-foot mooring would cost $16 per linear foot per month. 

That’s $640 every month — almost a 500% increase.

The proposed rate changes are different for various boat sizes. A 25-foot mooring would cost $10.50 per foot per month, while moorings 70 feet and above would cost $23.25 per foot per month.

“I want to keep this mooring at an affordable rate so I can pass this on to my son,” Chris Benzen, a mooring holder since 2021, told harbor commissioners at a previous meeting. “Not pass the mooring permit onto him, but the joys of fishing. Raise my son right.”

“Raising this 400% [or] 500% — you’re going to have a lot of fall out,” he said. “A lot of people are going to have to get rid of their moorings.”

Harbor commissioners emphasized that there hasn’t been an increase in offshore mooring rates in years and said it’s time to adjust the rates to better align with the market value of the moorings.

According to the staff presentation, the increases could occur over six different phases — not reaching the full increase until 2029. Those specific details would still need formal approval from the city council before they can go into effect.

However, some residents have also called out a concern with the appraisal that they see as a conflict of interest.

Benzen presented these claims at the last harbor commission meeting, saying there’s a conflict of interest with James (Jim) Netzer — the owner of Netzer & Associates — who completed the mooring appraisal.

Netzer is on the board of directors for the Newport Aquatic Center, a beachfront nonprofit in Newport Harbor that offers rowing, kayaking and paddle boarding rentals. The center also offers boat storage for annual members. 

Benzen claimed this role is a conflict of interest that should have been disclosed as part of the appraisal process. In his presentation, he said this involvement prevents Netzer from conducting an independent and objective appraisal.

“Jim says that he doesn’t really have any interest in the parties of the Newport Beach Harbor,” Benzen said. “Yeah, he kind of has some interest here.”

Netzer did not respond to requests from Voice of OC for comment.

After Benzen’s presentation, commissioners held that the appraisal was independent and reasonable. Commissioner Ira Beer said the appraisal’s rates are consistent with rates for similar mooring rentals in Newport Harbor.

“Just take a look at what the real world tells you,” Beer said. “You’re paying $30 to park a boat on the beach in Newport Harbor when you can’t park a car in a parking lot by the beach for $33 a day. What’s reasonable? Ask yourself that.”

The harbor commission is slated to continue discussing mooring rates and make a final recommendation to the city council on April 10. The meeting begins at 5 p.m. at city hall.

After the commission votes on a recommendation, the city council will then discuss and vote on the issue at future meetings before any rate changes are made official.

“The fair market rental rate, based on the information [and] the data we have, we believe is substantially higher than what you’re all paying today,” Beer said. “But we also know it’s not your fault you’ve been paying these lower rates for so many years.” 

“So what do we do? We have to uphold the Constitution, the municipal code, we have to do our job and provide a recommendation to the city council that we believe is reasonable,” he said.

There are more than 800 off-shore moorings in the harbor where people can park their boats. Some boaters could see their mooring rent increase by more than 400% – the Harbor Commission is discussing a phasing in plan that would start in 2025, and wouldn’t reach the maximum until five years.

Boaters argue they will be priced out of the harbor and question the size of the increase and whether it is necessary. Commissioners say they are doing their best to bring the price in line with a fair market rate for the use of an asset that is owned by the state and considered part of the public trust.  The State Lands Commission oversees these areas of submerged land known better as tidelands.

The Newport Mooring Association has raised questions there may be a possible conflict of interest for the independent appraiser the city hired to review the moorings and complete a comparative analysis of fair market rates.

Members said Jim Netzer of Costa Mesa-based Netzer and Associates is connected to the Newport Aquatic Center, a nonprofit that offers rowing, kayaking, canoeing and other water sport activities, including boat storage, from the bay inland of the harbor with a ground lease from the city, and that may be a conflict of interest. As part of the assignment, the appraisal was to look at the NAC among other boat storage areas, marinas, yacht clubs and the Dunes Waterfront Resort, said Chris Benzen, a mooring holder and member of the Newport Mooring Association at a recent commission meeting.

Netzer is a board member for the center and also made a personal loan in the past to the center, according to city records obtained by Benzen and presented at the meeting. Netzer acknowledged the loan in a later email to the Register, saying there is no conflict of interest.

Benzen also pointed out the city’s harbormaster , Paul Blank, who has been part of the discussions since 2021, has now recused himself as of last month from further discussions on the mooring rates. John Pope, the city’s spokesman, said Blank’s recusal came at the advice of the city attorney.

“It makes you wonder and think there is an appearance of impropriety,” Benzen told the harbor commissioners of the questions the group has raised.

City officials said Netzer and other interested contractors went through the required process of submitting a proposal for providing the appraisal services and was selected from a group of three that submitted; Netzer has one of the highest national appraiser designations possible, Pope said.

Pope said Netzer’s membership on the Newport Aquatic Center board does not present a conflict, and the appraisal he is conducting for the city on the moorings “is distinct and separate from his involvement with NAC.”

“The fact that Netzer is a director with NAC does not create a conflict or prevent him from being able to appraise the moorings,” Pope said. He said the Newport Aquatic Center use in the area is “different in type and kind. So he has no interest in the ‘property’ at issue, the moorings.”

Netzer said that his appraisal was “impartial and independent” and that his position on the NAC board is not a “conflict of interest.”

“To suggest otherwise is defamatory,” he said in an emailed response, adding that “the NAC loan was approximately 10 years ago between two private parties and the city was not involved.”

The appraisal assessed the rental rates of moorings in the harbor using three different comparative analyses, including tidelands market rentals and similar mooring rentals, said Ira Beer, co-chair of the Harbor Commission and chair of its subcommittee on the proposal.

“The comparable rental analysis includes the yacht clubs along with five other mooring rental locations along the coast of California,” he said, adding for a 40-foot mooring, the Balboa Yacht Club charges $16, and the Newport Harbor Yacht Club gets $13.50.

The harbor charges $3.34 per linear foot of boat per month for rental for the offshore moorings, which come with no amenities, such as power or water, and can only be reached by using a dinghy, paddleboard, or another sort of watercraft. The latest version of the proposal discussed by the commissioners would charge between $7.77 and $17.78 per linear foot, with the price increasing with the size of the boat. Netzer’s appraisal had suggested up to $23.25 on the higher end for a fair market value.

Boaters argue the fee increase will make the boating lifestyle unattainable for many, especially those on fixed incomes, and will drive many out of Newport Harbor. However, city officials say the proposed rate increase is commensurate with what the market bears out, and the current rates are too low to maintain the public harbor.

Beer said his group has done the best it can to keep the prices “as reasonable as possible,” including suggesting the phasing in of the increase.

“Six increases over five-and-a-half years are what we think will get us up to what we think fair market value is today,” he said. “We’re saying, ‘Hey, let’s kick this thing down the road as far as we can.’ All we’re saying is pay your fair share and let us be in compliance with state code.”

Benzen also took the boaters’ complaints to the City Council last month.

“What they’re proposing, the 400% to 500% increase to offshore moorings? It’s discriminatory; it’s bullying by the city,” he said.

If the commission votes later to recommend a rate increase, the City Council must approve it. Then, the California Coastal Commission would make the final decision.

“We would like the city to respond to the questions we’ve raised,” Richard Navarro, a Newport Mooring Association board member, said. “They’re very serious … about the conduct of the appraiser and why the harbor master had to recuse himself. In my view, the Harbor Commission has really lost the confidence of the public. It has a job to do to restore that credibility.”

The mooring association will continue to look for assistance, including asking the California State Lands Commission to compare the city’s appraisal with one commissioned by the Newport Mooring Association, Navarro said. “If the intent was to do an objective review, we’d like the city to send that to the State Lands, but they chose not to do it.”

Typically, the State Lands Commission does not engage in the day-to-day management of legislatively granted public trust lands, said Sheri Pemberton, chief of external affairs. That responsibility falls to the city.

“The commission generally does not act to either approve or disprove a grantee’s actions,” she said, adding that the commission staff will “review the city’s appraisal through the lens of whether the appraisal constitutes a reasonable effort to derive fair market value for the occupation and use of public land.”

“Commission staff intend to consider the Newport Mooring Association’s appraisal when providing feedback to the city,” Pemberton added.

Beer said the rates will be discussed again during the commission’s meeting this month. The next meeting is scheduled for April 10.

“We intend to make a recommendation,” he said, “if we have all the data.”
