About Rapido 60

Billed as the World’s Ultimate Ocean Cruising Trimaran, the Rapido 60 really is the Queen of the Oceans. It offers speed, safety, performance – and luxury.

The inspiration behind the Rapido 60 comes from Paul Koch (co founder of Rapido Trimarans), arguably, the man who has built more production trimarans than anyone else on the planet.

The design is by world renowned naval architects, Morelli & Melvin Design and Engineering and the construction is by Triac Composites.

The foam sandwich and carbon construction provides an extremely strong and rigid structure that is relatively light and designed to withstand the might of the oceans and offer speed in friendlier conditions. The foam sandwich construction also offers a high degree of insulation making the Rapido cooler when the sun beats down.

Just how tough are the composites on the Rapido?

An ocean-crossing trimaran must be strong. Very strong.

As big as a 60′ trimaran is, it is but a floating cork on a boundless ocean.

Morelli & Melvin enjoy a very strong international reputation which includes designing entries for the America’s Cup. Their computer modelling said that the boat was very strong. And so we tested it.

We bolted the centre hull of the Rapido to the factory floor in HCMC. We then brought in two mobile cranes – each took a diagonal corner of the two outer hulls. With one diagonal corner each, the two cranes began to lift while the trimaran’s centre hull remained bolted to the floor, causing it to twist. One tonne of lifting pressure… Two tonnes… Three tonnes…

As the trimaran twisted it began to creak and groan. But the sensitive electronic equipment we had measuring every move and twist remained unphased. Everything was within design parameters.

Seven tonnes… Eight tonnes… Nine tonnes…

The pressure was eased and the Rapido spring back into its original condition – totally unaffected by the enormous twisting pressure that had been placed upon it.

The computer modelling had accurately predicted the enormous structural strength of the composites used in the Rapido. The Rapido is built to take on the oceans. Rapido is, simply, the Queen of the Oceans.

A stunning success for the Rapido and another milestone for composites.

Why Rapido 60

FAST AND POWERFUL Trimarans are safe, powerful and fast as demonstrated by the fact that they consistently win races and hold the solo speed record for circumnavigating the world.

SAFE Safety at sea is the No. 1 priority and this thinking is reflected throughout the design and construction of the Rapido.

SPACIOUS The Rapido 60 has some truly amazing living spaces which provide more open, private and intimate areas than monohulls or catamarans.

STABLE AND COMFORTABLE Trimarans are comfortable on all points of sail.

FUN The combination of safety, performance and comfort put the Rapido in a league of its own. The enormous trampoline nets add fun and excitement as you watch the blue water rush underneath you – or as you lounge on the nets while gently floating over a reef. You will be instantly hooked..

The idea is to be able to combine the volume aboard with the performance of trimarans and the comfort at sea they provide. The Rapido 60 is thus capable of welcoming up to 8 people in modern, practical and comfortable accommodation. The trimaran is able to sail at 25 knots, and is manageable shorthanded. Note that the company is also offering a day charter version of its trimaran. Here is a video of this amazing trimaran !

Despite the inexorable rise of the cruising catamaran, trimarans remain something of a rarity in the cruising world, particularly when you move into the bluewater bracket. So the launch of the Rapido 60 is good news.

Rapido 60

To this end, the Rapido 60 is a stable boat, can go to windward better than most monohulls, and is also comfortable and roomy, featuring forward and aft doubles with ensuites plus additional berths in the saloon area.

Made of e-Glass and carbon, sea trials on hull number showed blistering performance. The main hull boasts five watertight bulkheads.

Rapido owners' reply: What would you change on the Rapido 60 Trimaran?

Updated: Nov 27, 2018

So, after crossing the Tasman Sea (between New Zealand and Australia) in a Rapido 60 Trimaran , what would the owners, Janice Knowles and Dougall Love, want to change?

Janice Knowles and Dougall Love have just completed their first Tasman Sea crossing aboard Romanza.

That's what Skiperelli Mac asked on 22 September 2018 - see below.

Beneath Skiperelli Mac's question is Dougall's and Janice's reply. And it seems that their Rapido 60, "Romanza", met their expectations.

Question by Skiperelli Mac

Love the boat and really appreciate you sharing the experience on Romanza as well. This is my dream boat and hopefully, one day, I will be able to acquire one as well.

To the owners Dougall and Janice and / or crew, just wondering how have you found the off shore cruising in reality now, with crossing the Tasman Sea etc, with regards to space and placement of items, stability and auto helm options etc?

Is there anything you would do differently now if you designed the new Rapido 60?

Reply from Romanza's owners, Janice and Duugall

Hi Skiperelli Mac.

The Tasman crossing on Romanza was very easy and even though we went with a crew of six for our first passage, bed spaces worked well with hot bunking during the night watches.

There was more than enough storage room.

We stowed a lot of the dry food in plastic storage boxes under the salon settee and restocked the pantry as needed from there.

The fridge and freezer managed our fresh and frozen food perfectly and we found the induction cooking ideal and fast.

We stowed much of the cruising gear, spares, etc. in the ‘hold’ under the cockpit, again using plastic storage boxes on the shelves we had installed.

We also have our washing machine there, which performed perfectly.

We did stow our deflated dinghy in one of the floats, but otherwise these just stored sails and sheets.

We added (removable) clears around the wheelhouse for the passage and these proved outstanding at creating a warm and comfortable helm station for night watches.

Most of the time we steered by autohelm as it just made life simple. We had no issues with this at all and with 360 amp hours of battery at 24v, solar panels and a Genset as well as the engine, we didn’t ever suffer with low batteries.

The boat was stable, comfortable most of the time and felt very safe.

Much of the sailing time was on full main and jib or Gennaker.

We didn’t experience heavy weather as we routed carefully, and we did spend a lot of time motoring across a big high.

We had a lot of input into the interior layout and finish (of Romanza) and there’s little that we would change as everything worked pretty much as imagined. Some things worked out exceptionally well, like the salon table setup and the chart table.

We love the simplicity of Romanza’s layout and enjoyed the effortless runs of 230+ miles per day.

A great first passage!

- "The fleet’s largest , Rapido, living up to her name coming over the line third before storming off down the Gran Canarian coast."

The demo is called Rapido and hosts a lot of publicity to the shipyard. They were in partly to promote the but things don't seem to have turned well. From their site:

They announced a participation on the Middle Sea but did not have appeared there.

Now they are the and after having departed well they could never outsail a 65 neither many monohulls from the same size and smaller.

But it is not the worst....they are retiring and coming back to the Canary Islands On the facebook page some asked what happened but no answer.

Anybody knows what happened?

boat, the Swedish Pogo and some others understood this. Light fast French boats most of them I think.

It was also clear that the slower boats would get either becalmed or headed on the direct regular route (go to a wpt NW off CV, then turn right).

The route via CV was also a good, if dicey, option for the boats that do not sail well. The Jongert crew understood this. Look at their track.

Those who took the mid route in anything but a stellar boat were either uninformed or naive. Still, due to wx shift some did quite well. Two strong boats are doing very well on this option. The Rapido did too!

I have clients in the pack and the conditions are OK overall. Boats that have retired have likely technical or personal issues. Can't avoid this in a 200 strong fleet. Statistically, they do better than the non ARC crowd.

Look up the Bav 32. She is doing well in spite of difficult weather. Her knows.

Simply load earlied gribs into your and have it draw options for a number of polars. You will have no reason to agree/disagree then.

Cheers,
