With my advancing years and a gammy hip, I'm contemplating buying a motorsailer, and one possible contender is a Scanyacht 290. These were built by Trident Marine from around 2000 and are based on the old LM27; I don't know how many were built, but not very many I suspect. My question is, does anyone know who moulded the hulls for Trident, and what sort of quality were they. Any information on this, and anything else including sailing performance on this specific model would be much appreciated. Thanks.  

raro3 I have a 2001 Trident Marine built Scanyacht 290, no details of who did the grp but quality appears good to me and favourable comments from others who have worked on the boat. Sailing performance is satisfying enough for me (my last comparable boat was a Sun Odyssey 32) although obviously not as close winded, the weight is noticeable and it does require a bit of old fashion technique to get the best from her. I have fitted a Featherstream prop to good effect. There is a Yachting Monthly review from September 2001 available which comments favourably on the sailing aspect. Boat Descritption

The SCANYACHT 290 has been developed from the world’s most successful wheelhouse sailing cruiser, the Danish LM 27, the 28 footer chosen by over 1,500 original purchasers. The SCANYACHT 290 is effectively a British built Mark III version of the LM 27 and incorporates so many developments on the original theme that she has to be the definitive wheelhouse cruiser under 30 feet. Yet, she still retains the same hull lines and robust construction that owe more to a “Colin Archer” deep sea design than to modern lightweights. The original LM27 gained a very favourable Press for her fast sailing ability:-

The scanyacht 290 is a 29.33ft masthead sloop designed by palle mortensen and built in fiberglass between 1997 and 2009..

The Scanyacht 290 is a very heavy sailboat which is under powered. It is reasonably stable / stiff and has an excellent righting capability if capsized. It is best suited as a heavy bluewater cruising boat. The fuel capacity is originally small.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Bukh DV24ME diesel engine at 24.0 hp (17 kW), which gives a max speed about 4.9 knots.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 140 liters (36 US gallons, 30 imperial gallons).

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Scanyacht 290 is about 132 kg/cm, alternatively 743 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 132 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 743 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Scanyacht 290

Scanyacht 290 is a 29 ′ 3 ″ / 8.9 m monohull sailboat designed by Palle Mortensen and built by Bridgend Boat Co. Ltd. (GBR) between 1997 and 2009.

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

• SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
• D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

• LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Description.

2004 Scanyacht 290, sloop-rigged motorsailer with Yanmar 3YM30 30hp diesel engine on shaft drive. This immaculate yacht's hull was moulded in 2003 by Cygnus Marine, with rest of the build mostly finished by Yachting Projects Limited in Hamble. Nordic Star offers the best of many worlds with her good engine, shallow draft, sloop rig and ease of sailing single-handed. The current owner had new rigging, the sails valeted and Coppercoat re-applied in 2015. In recent years she's been regularly enjoyed for family sailing trips and short breaks. Owner only selling due to retiring from sailing.

Owners Comments

Nordic Star is a very comfortable motor sailer as the wheelhouse gives shelter from the elements, and she is easy to sail single handed as all sail control lines come back to the cockpit. The interior layout is superb for living, as the galley has views out, is bright and airy, and the quickly erected canopy turns the cockpit with its large folding table, into a spacious living area on the same level as the wheelhouse. 

The first owner had the boat built to a high specification, and sailed her from the South Coast to the North West via Ireland, and sold her in 2011. When I bought her in 2015 she'd not had so much use, but in my ownership she has been regularly used for family trips and short breaks. When I bought her I had a survey of both engine and hull which were reassuring, and I had new rigging, valeted the sails and had new battens to the mainsail and re-applied copper coat. Since then I have replaced all equipment that was faulty or tired (with the exception of the stereo which no longer plays CDs!).

In the 4 years that I have owned the boat, I have thoroughly enjoyed sailing and staying on board, but my advancing years mean it is time to move on!
