Classic Antique Motor Yacht with Pedigree 

"Sobre Las Olas" was built in Wilmington, California. Built with an unlimited budget, the craftsmanship reflects an era long past. Two of her famous owners were J. Paul Getty and William Randolph Hearst. Over the years she has undergone renovations and was in charter between Seattle, WA and Alaska. At present she is one of the largest antique classics on the West Coast.

The current owners have since added a superstructure over the back deck, installed new wiring and plumbing throughout, but decided to keep the original 1929 Atlas Imperial diesel engines. It is said that there are only four of these engines left in existence to this day. A similarly constructed engine from the same era currently sits in the Smithsonian Institute.

“Sobre Las Olas” is claimed by some to be the largest antique vessel on the West Coast. Her all wood hull construction has been gone through and over a third of it has been re-planked with Douglas Fir. Her decks are teak, and the interior is Honduras mahogany. All the decks have been recently re-sanded and re-caulked. Prior to the boat being purchased by the current owners in July 2003, it was scheduled to be sunk and sold for parts.

The owners set out to the keep the yachts original design. The dining salon is all original, which is all Honduras mahogany. All of the lighting fixtures in the dining room are all the originals that we’ve kept, rewired and re-chromed. However, a new galley was constructed, the lounge area has been renovated, and cabinets, windows and lighting have all been refurbished to keep the living area more satisfying.

The vessel sleeps a total of 12, which includes a master stateroom, a crew quarter for five, a guest cabin for two, a master cabin, an additional cabin in the back of the hull and the pilot cabin.

The yacht was built around the same time Black Tuesday overwhelmed the country, and the original owners were forced to sell it to none other than J. Paul Getty, the famed industrialist. Getty owned the boat until 1932, where it began its journey through several owners.

There have been several rumors of William Randolph Hearst, the heralded newspaper publisher, owning the hull, but the owners have yet to obtain documentation verifying ownership—unless the vessel was purchased under a corporate name.

A pair of movies was also filmed on the vessel, including the Frank Sinatra/Rita Hayworth musical drama “Pal Joey” and Lindsay Lohan’s portrayal of Elizabeth Taylor in “Liz and Dick.”

The exact number of owners is unclear, but the boat was owned in Seattle for 10 years and spent a substantial amount of time in San Francisco. It is also believed the yacht was used for chartered trips to the San Juan Islands at some point during its tenure in the Seattle area and was likely commissioned by the Navy for submarine chasers as well.

Walkthrough Description by Clark Barthol:

This is a beautiful 1920s-style twin diesel screw luxury motor yacht of raked stern, round bilge, fantail stern design and planked wood hull construction. The helm is controlled via chain and cable from a pilothouse atop the main cabin.

Vessel’s hull layout includes; deck-access forepeak; steel bulkhead; former head compartment with chain locker under; crews quarters with scuttle up to bow deck, tandem upper and lower berths port, settee and single-berth cabin, followed by companionway up to main deck starboard; guest cabin with enclosed electric head, tub and enclosed stall shower forward, large athwartships double berth and settee starboard, cabinetry, settee and lavatory port; companionway up to main deck starboard; aft cabin with (2) deadlights, raised berth port and starboard, U-shaped settee and lockers; bulkhead; deck-access lazarette.

Vessel’s main deck layout includes: scuttle with stairwell down to crew’s cabin; trunk cabin lounge with U-shaped settee port, stairwell down to guest cabin starboard, cabinetry with electrically-lifted TV aft, side deck access doors and interior doors to next compartments aft; passageway port with stairwell up to bridge deck, ladder down to engine room, galley door to side deck and door to salon; starboard door from lounge to office with desk, door to pantry area and doors to side deck and aft salon; the salon includes built-in cabinetry, custom oval-shaped table with (8) chairs, stairwell down to aft accommodations area starboard aft, and side deck access doors; aft deck with bridge deck extending to the stern, ladder up to bridge deck port forward, locker and wheeled wet bar with refrigerator starboard forward, circular table with (5) chairs, and U-shaped lounge aft.

Vessel’s upper bridge deck includes: pilothouse with port and starboard deck-access doors followed by captain’s cabin with athwartships berth aft; top-opening (3) compartment storage locker with LPG tanks therein; (2) sets radial steel boat davits; built-in serving bar with stainless steel sink and ice-maker starboard aft, followed by U-shaped lounge aft.

Major work has been accomplished over the past several years including repair of machinery, renewal of wiring, replacement of life rails, remodeling of interior, etc.

Classic motor yacht Sobre Las Olas for sale

The 32 metre motor yacht Sobre Las Olas has been listed for sale by Will Petersen at Denison Yachting .

Built in wood by US yard Wilmington Boat Works to a design by D.M. Callis , Sobre Las Olas was delivered in 1929 and, as usual with a yacht of this vintage, has had a chequered history. The yacht was built around the same time the Great Depression overwhelmed the country, and the original owners were forced to sell it to none other than J. Paul Getty, the famed oil tycoon. Getty owned the boat until 1932, when it began its journey through several owners, including William Randolph Hearst, the newspaper magnate.

Prior to the boat being purchased by the current owners in July 2003, it was scheduled to be sunk and sold for parts, the usual ending for yachts of this age. The new owners set out to keep the yacht’s original design, thus the dining saloon retains its classic Honduras mahogany. All of the lighting fixtures in the dining room are the originals that have been rewired and re-chromed.

Accommodation is for eight guests in four cabins comprising a master suite, VIP suite, double and a twin, all with en suite bathroom facilities. The crew quarters sleep five staff aboard this yacht for sale. Her top speed is a sedate 11 knots and she boasts a maximum cruising range of 3,000 nautical miles at 10 knots with power coming from two antique 125hp Atlas Imperial diesel engines.

Lying in Marina Del Rey, California, Sobre Las Olas is asking $1,500,000.

Visual culture and the Moscow Metro

James Andrews first rode the Moscow Metro in the 1980s as an undergraduate student studying in the former Soviet Union.

Now after 35 years, the metro is taking him on a new journey: documenting how its iconic public spaces reveal the story of Moscow itself as the city evolved under Joseph Stalin and his Soviet and post-Soviet successors.

This May, Andrews, professor of history, gave a public lecture on his new research project at the Kennan Institute in Washington, D.C. The Kennan Institute is part of the Woodrow Wilson Center, where Andrews was a former senior resident fellow.

The talk, which has been made available on YouTube, was so well-received that Andrews immediately received an additional invitation to present at the Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia at New York University.

What makes the Moscow Metro a fascinating subject for a historian? More people ride the Moscow Metro each day than the New York City Subway and London Tube combined, yet its history is relatively unknown, Andrews said.

“Everyone has a story about the metro, but there has never been a book in English about its history,” Andrews said. “Many of my generation spent an endless amount of time on the metro. Before people had cell phones, you would always say, ‘Well, we’ll meet on the platform at this station.’ Everyone spent time traveling through this cavernous system. It’s a labyrinth really, but at the same time people don’t know much about its history in detail.”

Andrews’ previous books focus on the history of Russian science, technology and the Soviet space program. His new book project on the metro is another opportunity to study iconic Soviet technology, as well as visual culture.

The original metro stations, built with deep shaft tunneling methods beginning in 1932, had airy open ceilings with gorgeous bas-relief architecture—a canvas that Stalin used to create a public art monument to socialism.

“Socialist countries had a tendency to produce technologies that they could adorn with stories,” Andrews said. “Their metro was started in the 1930s under Stalin, and they invested a lot of money in it. It was important for two reasons: there was a utilitarian nature. The crowds were incredible in Moscow. They needed better public transportation. People had been flooding in from the countryside during collectivization. The other thing was to come up with a monument to socialism. That’s why they hired all these architects to decorate, and they decorated each station thematically.”

In the years after Stalin’s death, Nikita Khrushchev issued an edict rejecting the metro’s flamboyant architectural style in favor of a pre-fabricated, practical style, Andrews said. At the same time all over the city, de-Stalinization was happening, and street signs, busts of Stalin and station names were changed or removed.

“The irony is Stalin funded it,” Andrews said. “It’s a Stalin-era display technology project, but by the Khrushchev era they were erasing Stalin’s name from it.”

Andrews has had unlimited access to Moscow’s architectural archives, including many original photographic negatives, and will return to Russia next summer to research political archives.

“The Bolsheviks liked to document everything, but I was shocked at how many photographs they had taken of all these projects, documenting every stage and how well they were preserved,” he said.

Throughout his research, he has uncovered more stories hidden within familiar metro spaces.

One Russian architectural archivist told Andrews about being born in the metro in 1942, during a time when its underground stations housed makeshift hospitals, military meetings and even cultural events such as film nights.

Public spaces bear new stories over time, and Andrews is closely following the story told by newly constructed metro stations. New stations are bringing back marble-laden aesthetics and cultural themes that highlight famous Russian figures like chemist Dmitri Mendeleev or writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky, he said.

“I think the story tells us now that during Putin’s era you see a resurgence of Russian nationalism and Russian themes,” he said. “Not every station can be imploded into this reductive narrative, but it points again to how the narrative of the metro stations changes as the politics of Russian change to some extent and the city itself.”

And it shows how the Moscow Metro has a seemingly endless amount of track for a historian to travel.

“What I love about the project is there is a political history to it, a technological history, a social history, an engineering element, and an artistic element,” Andrews said. “It’s a multi-disciplinary study, which is both fascinating to me and challenging.”

In total, the contract between Elemash Magnit LLC (an enterprise of TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom in Elektrostal, Moscow region) and Red Wind B.V. (a joint venture of NovaWind JSC and the Dutch company Lagerwey) foresees manufacturing and supply over 200 sets of magnets. One set is designed to produce one power generator.

“The project includes gradual localization of magnets manufacturing in Russia, decreasing dependence on imports. We consider production of magnets as a promising sector for TVEL’s metallurgical business development. In this regard, our company does have the relevant research and technological expertise for creation of Russia’s first large-scale full cycle production of permanent rare-earth magnets,” commented Natalia Nikipelova, President of TVEL JSC.

“NovaWind, as the nuclear industry integrator for wind power projects, not only made-up an efficient supply chain, but also contributed to the development of inter-divisional cooperation and new expertise of Rosatom enterprises. TVEL has mastered a unique technology for the production of magnets for wind turbine generators. La ola conocida como Lance’s Right es uno de los tesoros más codiciados para los amantes del surf en todo el mundo. Conocida por ofrecer la oportunidad de surfear la ola de tu vida en forma de un brillante tren de olas azules, Lance’s Right atrae a surfistas de todas partes del planeta. Sin embargo, su descubrimiento y ascenso a la fama tienen raíces profundas en la historia del surf.

En la década de los 90, la exploración de olas en las Mentawai era un concepto relativamente nuevo. Fue entonces cuando Lance Knight, un surfista de Yamba, Australia, se topó con una de las olas más espectaculares de la Tierra. Después de perder su trabajo y su novia en rápida sucesión, Lance decidió emprender la búsqueda de nuevas olas y se dirigió a Singapur en busca de aventuras. Inspirado por el relato de Peter Troy sobre su descubrimiento en Nias, Lance adquirió detallados mapas marítimos y se aventuró hacia las islas Mentawai en 1991.

Su llegada a Padang coincidió con una semana de “locura” turística en la ciudad, donde fue recibido como el único turista. Después de hacerse amigo de locales, incluso de un médico iraní, Lance consiguió un inesperado vuelo médico hacia la Isla Sipora por tan solo $50. Armado únicamente con una tabla de surf, una bolsa de arroz y una botella de agua, Lance se encontró solo en medio de la isla.

Guiado por mapas detallados y la ayuda de lugareños, Lance exploró la costa en busca de olas. Fue durante una tormenta, mientras se refugiaba en la bahía de Cetuk, que avistó la famosa ola. Una derecha perfecta, como un tren de carga azul brillante, se deslizaba frente a él. Después de contemplarla durante un tiempo, Lance finalmente se lanzó y surfeó algunas de las primeras olas en solitario.

Bautizada como Lance’s Right, esta ola pronto atrajo la atención de otros surfistas. Incluso se aventuró a explorar una izquierda cercana, a la que llamó Lance’s Left. Sin embargo, fue la llegada de un barco de rescate occidental lo que cambió todo. Aunque Lance esperaba mantener su descubrimiento en secreto, la noticia finalmente se extendió y la ola fue rebautizada como Hollow Trees por surfistas estadounidenses.

Desde entonces, Lance’s Right ha pasado de ser una joya oculta a un destino de surf de renombre mundial. Campamentos y viajes en barco se han establecido en la zona, y en los mejores días, la ola puede albergar hasta 50 o 60 surfistas. A pesar de la multitud y el desarrollo, Lance’s Right sigue siendo una de esas olas que todo surfista debería experimentar al menos una vez en la vida.
