The Port Douglas Yacht Club

Sunset at Port Douglas Yacht Club

The Port Douglas Yacht Club is a lively club in Port Douglas.  Enthusiastic in ensuring that their Club Members and Port Douglas locals are given great entertainment, delicious food and a host of activities to mingle at, The Port Douglas Yacht Club is a strong pulse in the social scene of Port Douglas.

The Port Douglas Yacht Club have many ad hoc live music events like ‘Rock the Yacht’ and DJ events (keep an eye out in the local press for dates of these).  Here are some of their more permanent activities and attractions:

The Yachty Restaurant

There can’t be too many restaurants in Port Douglas that have such a perfect location in such a picturesque spot.  Overlooking the waters and mangroves of the Dickson Inlet to the east and views across the Reef Marina and the waving masts of luxury yachts to the south.

Eating here is one of Port Douglas’s best-kept secrets.

With wonderful flavours like the Moroccan spiced lamb backstrap with herbed slaw and hummus and mint yoghurt, lobster tail with fragrant coconut cream sauce and Nannygai fillets with watermelon and nut salad the menu is varied and creative.

Salads here aren’t just about bunging some green leaves on a plate, Yachty salads are scrummy with added nuts, specially mixed dressings and a lot of love and care in creating delicious creative food.

You can choose whether to sit under cover or outside under the auspices of the majestic coconut trees.

There is a licensed bar selling Australian and imported wines and beers.

Lunch 12.00pm - 2.30pm

Dinner 5.30pm - 8.00pm

Port Douglas Yacht Club – WAGS – Free Sailing Wednesday Afternoon

Every Wednesday the Yacht Club members volunteer their time and space on their yachts to take the public out sailing. (Minimum age 18).

This is a great experience for visitors to travel on a yacht from the Yacht Club, past the Reef Marina and the iconic coconut palms of “The Point”and out to the Coral Sea.  You will witness the amazing scenery as the sun sets sending its amber tendrils of light over the peaks of Cape Tribulation and reflected in the waters of the Coral Sea.

All passengers are asked to arrive at the Yacht Club at 4.00 pm to sign paperwork (disclaimer).  The Skippers of the yachts arrive between 4.00pm to 5.00pm when allocations of boats and passengers are organised. Please note that depending on conditions, supply and demand there may be occasions when not everyone who attends will be able to sail.

You will then make yourself comfortable on board your yacht.  If you wish to help crew then there are opportunities to be ‘hands on’ or if you just want to soak up the experience and kick back then that’s fine also.

You will depart around 5.00pm and return around 7.00pm.  On your return you can then stay for dinner and drinks at the Yacht Club restaurant “The Yachty”.

Though this experience is offered free, as a way of thanking the skippers it is customary to buy them dinner (and probably a drink or two wouldn’t go amiss).

Be aware that availability can fluctuate due to various factors, from weather conditions to number of yachts and skippers in attendance that day.

Mickey Ink – Port Douglas Yacht Club – Race Week

Every year over the May Labour Day Weekend, The Port Douglas Yacht Club presents the Mickey Ink Port Douglas Race Week.  This is a fun packed week full of sailing, good food and camaraderie.

Port Douglas Yacht Club is the perfect location for any sailing activity being located so close to the stunning yachting playground of the Coral Sea.  This regatta is held over 5 days and involves a schedule that includes racing around the amazingly beautiful Snapper Islands and Low Isles.

There will also be a race that will follow the coconut tree fringed white sand coast of Four Mile Beach (though it is closer to 4km in length).

Celebrations during the week will include the best local musicians playing live.  Delicious food will be served at The Yachty restaurant and drinks served at the licensed bar.

Barefoot Sundays – The Port Douglas Yacht Club

Port Douglas Yacht Club has launched a series of Barefoot Sundays.  These afternoons offer a great time of sailing, great food and music.

Come down at 10:00am and have a go in sailing the J24 “Port FM Mais Oui”.  The J24 is the most popular type of keelboat and is popular worldwide for all types of sailing, whether as a beginner or more experienced.

At 11:00am you can dine on a brunch that includes great value meals and buckets of prawns. For a delicious culinary treat a pig is roasted on a spit, making a wonderful aroma for your nasal passages.

The Port Douglas Yacht Club is the perfect place to while away a lazy Sunday, surrounded by the waters of the Dickson Inlet and the waving masts of the yachts in the Reef Marina.

Sip your sundowner drinks from the licensed bar and watch the suns setting rays glimmer over the mountain peaks of Cape Tribulation in the distance. Sit under the leaves of the surrounding coconut palms serenaded by the wonderful vocals of local musician, Jason Dylan.

The Yacht Club – Wedding and Special Events Venue

Your wedding day has to be perfect.  Surrounded by all the people you love, celebrating in one of the most beautiful places in the world and dining on delicious food.

Port Douglas Yacht Club has played host to many a couples’ ‘big day’ along with special occasions such as birthdays, engagements and anniversaries.

The backdrop of the proceedings are the distant peaks of the mountains of Cape Tribulation and majestic towering coconut trees. The lush mangroves of the Dickson Inlet to the north and to the south the stunning white boats and bobbing masts of the yachts of the Reef Marina. The balmy tropical climate gives an almost guaranteed sun soaked day.

The venue can cater for up to 150 people seated and liquor licence hours can be extended (21 days notice). Dancing and music, DJ or bands are all available upon request.

Please note that the club is not possible to be exclusive as there are members that use the club, but the function area can be partitioned off.

This was probably my favorite restaurant that I visited in Port Douglas. A local fisherman told me and my husband about this place. The fisherman told us you can wear whatever you would like and you don't even need to wear shoes when you dine at the restaurant. He also told us that's where all the locals usually hangout. I can't remember what I ordered since I visited this restaurant a while ago. The only thing I could remember was the fish was fresh and I was given a generous portion. If I visit Port Douglas in the future, I will definitely come back to this spot.

Come for the cheap drinks, great food, amazing views and make some friends. Wednesday sailing is a must if you're in town must do. Wednesday's 4pm.

The employees here were not very friendly and neither were the locals. We came here for a drink and it ended up being trivia night. The locals all kept cutting in line and weren't very patient. The bartenders/servers didn't acknowledge us and only addressed the other customers. It took about 15 minutes to order a drink! The only employee that was friendly was the guy hosting the trivia night. The atmosphere is nice. It is open concept and right on the water.

This place was recommended by one of our local tour guides! It was really great food at a mediocre price! Seems everywhere you go in town is at least 125+ for dinner and drinks. The Yachty (PD yacht club) came in with two entrees, an appetizer of prawns, and a bottle of wine at 100$ flat. The service was good. The bar was the standard but would definitely recommend if you want a great meal at not the price of the other guys in town!

Come for a drink or dinner and watch the boats come in and the bats go out at the end of the day around sunset. Really great view! Reasonably priced food (try the Greek lamb) and really friendly service. In a town full of tourists, this place has managed to stay remarkably untouristy (which is amazing, given its awesome location).

Very tropical, very chilled. It's as local as you can get.. Outdoor furniture on the grass, locals coming in for a quiet one and a chat, and boats cruising by. Bar staff are always friendly, food is good pub fare with always a special or two. Sunset is the best time to go, watching the boats come in and the sun set over the mangroves. An absolute must in any Port Douglas trip.

The yacht Club looks pretty nice and has a good atmosphere. The seater does an incredible Job. We got a beautiful place at on the terrace at the waterfront. unfortunately the soup (entree) came together with the main dishes. as we reequested to have it separately (as ordered), the waitress got angry and told us that is was the mistake of the order taker. Nevertheless we've given the main dishes back. after we had our soup, we told the waitress that we are ready for the main course. after 30 minutes I went to the main waitress and asked for the dishes. She apologiezed and informed the kitchen that we are ready now. after 30 minutes more we finally got the food. Food itself was ok (the soup was good), the main dish (sea plate) was regular fish&chips. not better than any take away. The steak was ordered medium-rare and was well done cooked. one extra star for the seater and the stunning view. But I can not recommend it. Unfortunately.

The yacht club has a bar and a restaurant, and is a local treasure that's listed in some guide books, yet seems rarely discovered by tourists. It's a good 10-15 minute walk away from the buzzing, happening nightlife in the centre of Port Douglas, so you won't stumble across it by accident. If you're from away, you're permitted free entry if you sign the guest book. It's a simple but fun place. Order your food from the counter. It's simple fish and meet and chips and burgers, but much cheaper than the high-end prices at the top-end restaurants. The beer and drinks are cheaper here, too. It's a large place, with plenty of tables for hundreds of people. Lots of local folks come here, and bring their families. It's friendly service, local people looking for a good time, not overly-polished waitresses with starched linens. If you're looking for simple fun, food, and beer, it's worth the walk. If you go on a Wednesday, you can even go for a free sail with some of the members!

“Love the Yachty” Review of Port Douglas Yacht Club

yacht club port douglas

We visited multiple times throughout our stay in Port Douglas and it was great. Yes- sometimes there can be a bit of a delay in getting food or drinks but eveyrone there is doing the best they can. You are in one of the most beautuful spots in the world, be happy to have extra time to relax and sit by the water! We had a couple meals here but our favorite was the Friday night seafood platter. It was massive and all of the seafood included was so nice. The wine was lovely too. Bette than expected and great value. Thanks Yachty for some lovely meals.

We enjoyed the most lovely relaxed lunch today at the Yachty. Special shout out to Mick and the girls for going above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed for a perfect afternoon out. Food, drinks, service and views absolutely spot on. Thanks for a memorable outing, wish we had of visited day 1 of our holiday instead of the end! Will sure to be back when we return to Portie.

We called in here on a Saturday to have a drink and have a look around. Whilst the barman wasn't too friendly all the other staff were. We were even able to take in our little dog and one gentleman (possibly commodore?) was very helpful with it. Also came for a chat. I really like this place and look forward to coming one night for dinner.

This is a good value restaurant in comparison to some of the higher level restaurants in Port Douglas. Food is simple, home cooked fare in pleasant surroundings.

Friday nights- the seafood platter for two coupled with a bottle of wine of your choice (out of 3)- very drinkable- and a choice of several alternative mains if seafood not your thing; out on the deck, great way to spend an evening right by the water-not to be missed! Fast friendly service. Tip-will have to book ahead as (like every eatery here at present!) very busy -quick online booking on SC website.

Port Douglas Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Spent a fantastic Friday night on the grass overlooking the water surrounded by the Marina on a Friday night in August. The share platter was great value at $50 for 2 with a bottle of wine included. The platter was restaurant standard, the wine cold... and tasty and the atmosphere was spot on. Highly recommend. More

Difficult time for us to get into restaurants in PD during school holidays and we Victorians were released from COVID custody. The place was more like walking down Chapel Street than Port Douglas. Anyway, that is what directed our attention the Yacht Club. Normally avoid... the club dining as one can only have so many parmas with any exotic topping imaginable. Still, we booked in for lunch and I braced for the infinite list of parma gastronomic experiences. From the very start the impression was we have lucked in here. The position at the harbour looking over the water and gazillionaires ships, was relaxing and enjoyable. Oddly we both ordered the steak and it was mouthwatering for me as I am a steak snob. Has to be cooked exactly medium rare or I go a little feral. I'm working on that. Anyway, the wait staff were ridiculously friendly and clearly one of them was my mate, because he reminded me of that association at every opportunity. "Good choice mate" "How's the location mate"? you get the picture. Lovely people and a 2 hour lunch atmosphere. More

Great Friday night spent at “the yachtie” after a recommendation from a local. Seafood platter for 2 and a bottle of wine for $75 is excellent value. Food was fine, but nothing exceptional. However, the relaxed vibe, the quiet location, the live music and friendly... staff made for a terrific evening. It was the one place that we went in Port Douglas that felt like a locals hangout. Great atmosphere and outdoor setting. More

Called this place and the voicemail said to leave a message for bookings and someone would get back to me. Days went by and nobody did. All good, sometimes people are busy or forget which is not a problem. Called them up again a few... days later and they answered, told them I’d like to book a table. Put me on hold for 10 mins then when they finally picked up the phone again they told me to call back because they are busy with dinner service. It was 5pm so hardly peak period. Poor service, they seemed to want to do anything possible to prevent me booking a table. More

A great venue to sit and take in the view. We were there for the Friday night Seafood Platter with a bottle of wine. Great value, however there was an issue with the ordering system so we waited over an hour for our meal. When... our meal arrived it was too small for 2 people and we left hungry. The service is great and the wine was great. We had also dropped by several times prior to that during the week for a drink on our way past. Maybe just order something extra as it is a great place to visit and relax. More

Ordered the seafood platter for two for $75, kids spag bowl and chicken parmy. Now I dislike making negative comments about businesses, particularly during the setbacks of COVID, so all I'll say is look elsewhere for a family meal. Calamari cold and overcooked, chips cold,... fish tasteless. Parmy good. Kids spag bowl-if you're feeding a 3 year old then it's fine. It was the smallest serve I've ever seen. It came out 30minutes before rest of the food. Had to order another and was subsequently charged for another. That was $22 spent on spag bowl that was less than a cup of spaghetti. Poor chef; it was packed out and I'm sure he did his best but unfortunately this just didn't cut it. More

Visited here twice during our stay - a leisurely afternoon sitting in the sunny beer garden overlooking the inlet &local boats and dinner on a Saturday - definitely need to book … and yes , couples can book ! Yeah !! Only open for lunches... on weekends. Busy on the weekends and usually booked out for dinner. We tried the vegetarian spring rolls , a bucket of prawns ( fresh as… ) and green crocodile curry - all delicious! A little oasis away from the hustle & bustle of Macrossan Street & the Marina . More

The ambience was excellent for the warm night seating - excellent introduction and meet. Only table service is bringing the meal to the table -you attend two different places to get the drinks and order. Which worked fine. My disappointment was the chefs reliance on... salt in their cooking. I ordered the rump steak and it was difficult to eat with that much salt. As salt and pepper is on the table I thought it appropriate that customer can put the amount they desire on the food not have that much where customers who don’t prefer salt cop that much it destroys the taste of the steak. More

Clearly they had overbooked and were not coping. We could not book food for 30 minutes as the kitchen was overloaded. We asked for the entrees to come out first, but no, entree and main came together. They had a female singer who missed every... second note. We asked to be seated as far away from the "Music" as possible. Patrons were dressed as if they were going sailing - extremely casual. I was charged for a bottle of prosecco rather than a piccolo. To top it all off the staff would not call for a shuttle to pick us up, simply gave me their number. All in all our worst experience during our week in Port Douglas. Never to return! More

We wanted a family restaurant for our last night in Port Douglas, the Yacht Club had a kids menu and easy access for my elderly father so this suited us. The food was ok, pretty much clubs food. I really enjoyed my parmigiana as did... my daughter my Dad and Husband had the roast and said it was dry. This was disappointing as it is quite pricey. We were served in a timely fashion, a lady did go to order after us and was told that it would be a 20min wait, think that they just don’t have enough staff. Was nice to sit so close to the water! More

We had a very long extended stay in Port Douglas due to COVID-19 so we were able to eat at 30 different restaurants in town. "The Yachty" was one of our 3 favourites and we ate here 3 times. Firstly, the seafood (especially tiger prawns... and snapper or Spanish mackerel) was delicious. Secondly, the service was very professional and very friendly by the staff, most of whom were from Argentina. Thirdly, you could not sit at a better place -- on the veranda at sunset overlooking the marina, watching as the yachts came gliding by after their afternoon sail. More

Friday night dinner with the family on the deck overlooking the marina and inlet. Seafood platter for two and a bottle of wine for AU$75 … what a bargain! I had the crocodile curry … curry was tasty, the croc makes a better handbag than... it does a protein. Can walk from the centre of town. Aeroguard is supplied and is a must unless you don’t mind mozzie’s. This place is (very) relaxed, good value and worth a visit. More

yacht club port douglas

This review is not based on my opinion of the food but the incompetence of the wait staff . Things were not heading in the right direction from the moment we got there as there was no beer on tap and meals were being scratched... off the menu because they were running out . After ordering our meals with the other couple we were travelling with their meal came out and after waiting a while ours didn’t . When the waitress was questioned she came back to our table with the order dockets and it had been thrown in the bin . There were apologies but still no meals other than other peoples meals around us coming . We decided to leave and to their credit they were apologetic and gave us our money back . More

Following a delightful sail on one of the yachts belonging to a club member, we joined all of the group for dinner at the club's restaurant. The menu was very good and included some interesting choices. (I had a crocodile green curry - very nice).... The atmosphere was very friendly, overlooking the river and the boats in the marina. Good company and good food. More

A great location and plenty of room for young ones to run around. The food whilst good was a bit too small in portion size for the price. A reasonable selection of drinks and a mess up with our order saw our desserts given to... another table of which we had to have something else from ‘what was left’. More

The town's population can often double, however, with the influx of tourists during the peak tourism season May–September. The town is named in honour of former Premier of Queensland,  John Douglas . Port Douglas developed quickly based on the mining industry. Other parts of the area were established with timber cutting occurring in the area surrounding the  Daintree River  and with settlement starting to occur on lots around the Mossman River by 1880.Previous names for the town included Terrigal, Island Point, Port Owen and Salisbury. The town is situated adjacent to two World Heritage areas, the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest.

The Port Douglas township was established in 1877 after the discovery of gold at Hodgkinson River by James Venture Mulligan. Port Douglas Post Office opened on 1 September 1877. [3]  It grew quickly, and at its peak Port Douglas had a population of 12,000 and 27 hotels. With the construction of the Mulligan Highway it serviced towns as far away as Herberton.

When the Kuranda Railway from Cairns to Kuranda was completed in 1891, the importance of Port Douglas dwindled along with its population. A cyclone in 1911 which demolished all but two buildings in the town also had a significant impact. At its nadir in 1960 the town, by then little more than a fishing village, had a population of 100.

In the mid-1980s, tourism boomed in the region after the construction of the world-class Sheraton Mirage.

8 reviews of Port Douglas Yacht Club "Come for a drink or dinner and watch the boats come in and the bats go out at the end of the day around sunset. Really great view! Reasonably priced food (try the Greek lamb) and really friendly service. In a town full of tourists, this place has managed to stay remarkably untouristy (which is amazing, given its awesome location)."
