When is the yachting season in Mauritius?

Mauritius enjoys a tropical climate all year round with water temperature varying between 23 et 28 degrees Celsius. The island doesn't have a drastic change of season, although the best season to charter a yacht is between May and September. The summer temperature from January to April can be hot and humid and stay around 26 degrees Celsius.

Mauritius is also a land of contrast as the western and northern are warmer and drier than the east and the south. July and September are usually dry seasons, and the temperature is more comfortable and stays around 25 degrees Celsius, which are the most popular months to visit. December through March offers translucent waters and is the best time for divers. Although there are risks of cyclones between November and February, it is a rare occurrence in the small island.

• A volcanic outcrop of the land bridge that once connected Africa and Asia, Mauritius lies about 804 kms (500 miles) east of Madagascar. Part of the Mascarene archipelago, Mauritius also includes the islands of Rodrigues, Agalega, and the Cargados Carajos archipelago.
• Mauritian Creole is spoken by 90% of the population. It is French-based with English derivatives. However, English and French are generally accepted as the de facto official languages and are used exclusively in schools and government departments. The population of the country is circa 1.26 million.
• The currency is the Mauritian Rupee (MRS). For details see  General Info .
• The country operates on Mauritius Standard Time (UTC +4).
• Mauritius enjoys a mild tropical maritime climate throughout the year and has two seasons. For more information see the  Weather section  below.
• Yachts calling in Mauritius are usually on passage westwards across the Indian Ocean and in a hurry to leave before mid-November due to the number of early cyclones that have hit the island in the past. Yet a few who have spent time cruising the Indian Ocean have enjoyed the beauty of this high island and the exotic mixture of its culture and peoples.
• The waterfront in  Port Louis  has been dramatically transformed in recent years and has been turned from the once dirty harbour into an attractive complex, with shopping centres, restaurants, hotel and docking facilities for yachts.
• Grand Baie  on the north-west coast is the favourite anchorage with a friendly yacht club and good basic facilities.
• Some cruisers also break their passage at the smaller island of Rodrigues, which is a pleasant stop due to easier formalities and friendly islanders. The inner harbour in  Mathurin Bay  is very well protected and the yacht can be left there while exploring the interior, particularly the caves on the windward side of the island.
• Occasionally yachts stop at the Cargados Carajos Shoals, a large reef area lying some 320 kms (200 miles) north-east of Mauritius. Although one is supposed to obtain prior permission to stop, this rule does not seem to be strictly enforced. However, one should ask permission from local fishermen to anchor off one of the four islands they occasionally inhabit. Over 50 islets and cays make up this small archipelago which abounds in marine life. The chart of this area is badly out of date and it is reported that the lighthouse marked as on Ile du Sud, is very rarely operational. Eyeball navigation is essential throughout this reef-infested area.

I would like to add my own comments re Yoann and Patrick – see below. Over the past year I have been seriously looking at purchasing an offshore vessel ex Reunion and after seeing their recommendations on Noonsite, I made contact with them both. I am based in NZ so it was all long distance, email and WhatsAp. Both these guys ( and they do now know each other ) not only traveled across to Reunion to carry out a full and comprehensive inspection of the vessel but whilst they were there they carried out an amazing amount of repairs and maintenance, getting things going that quite frankly the owner had given up on. These two, if you need electronics or mechanical assistance are honest, reliable, experts in their fields and their costs or rather lack of…is amazing. Simply I cannot recommend them enough.  The reefs ecosystems which surround the island are fragile.  They are subject to various sources of stresses for instance, natural (forces like cyclones, seasonal rise in temperature…) or anthropogenic (such as pollution, physical degradation etc.)  Unfortunately it is impossible to put in place measures to fight against natural forces. However, sustainable development and management programmes can be developed in order to minimize anthropogenic pressures.

Nautical leisure activities, and most particularly scuba diving, cause a daily concentration of boats on specific sites reputed for their magnificent underwater landscape and for their biodiversity. However, the concentration of boats on these anchorage sites represents a serious threat to the local ecosystem. At each anchorage manoeuvre, the anchor drags and then grips.  The anchor`s chain, under the influence of the waves and wind, drags and sweeps out the whole undersea area around the boat.  The devastation caused to all forms of life on the reef, is serious and extremely dramatic.  There exists a technical solution that can help to reconciliate both the development of nautical activities and the protection of the marine environment. It is the permanent mooring buoy. This buoy is composed of a permanent anchor, fixed at the bottom of the sea and linked to a surface buoy which allows many boats to be moored to it.

A first programme was initiated by the MMCS and Shoals of Capricorn Programme in the year 2000 with the funding of  the UNDP.  It has given the opportunity to install 4 mooring buoys, which includes 2 in the Grand Bay Aquarium and 2 more in the Pereybere Aquarium. On completion of this project, the Ministry of Environment requested that the project be extended nationally. The Marine Conservation Consortium (Reef Conservation Mauritius) was created in 2003 in order to undertake this project and was also funded by the UNDP.

In 2006, with the increase of the Dolphin Watching activity, it was observed that the reefs in the Tamarin/Black River region were degrading very rapidly due to uncontrolled and inappropriate anchorage of boats.

In fact, the tour operators generally propose outings which include the observations of dolphins, followed by snorkelling on the reefs in the region. Therefore, the installation of these permanent mooring buoys would help decrease the degradation of the reefs linked to this activity. The MMCS, in collaboration with Reef Conservation Mauritius has installed 4 new mooring buoys on frequently visited diving sites, 2 at La Preneuse and 2 at Harmony.

Of course, awareness programmes have been organised in order to allow tour operators to understand how they should anchor their boats to these buoys and further their knowledge on the coral ecology.

Further to the requests of users and considering the increasing damage caused to coralline reefs on the west coast, other mooring buoys will soon be installed and the project will be funded by the TOTAL Foundation.

Dock Your Yacht at La Balise Marina in Mauritius

Mauritius has an Integrated Resorts Scheme (IRS) which encourages foreign nationals to purchase luxury residential properties in Mauritius, and also gives them residency rights in the country. If you would like to know more about the IRS, you can find the detail in our article here .

One of the newest IRS developments is the spectacular La Balise Marina.  Located in the Black River region, which is comfortable nestled between verdant mountains and the crystal blue sea on the West Coast of Mauritius. It is no surprise that this part of Mauritius is known as “centre of the sunset coast”.

About La Balise Marina: La Balise Marina is the first residential marina development in Mauritius.  It has a range of luxury residential units and facilities for residents and visitors alike. The development is set over 12.8 hectares at a cost of EUR 120 million. The marina is sheltered from the elements of the sea and wind due to its unique position on the Black River estuary.

The commercial centre of the development is called L’Estuaire and includes restaurants, shops for your daily needs and boutiques for that something special.  There is also an exclusive complex for residents only called Le Sunset, which will include a fine-dining restaurant, gym, spa, infinity pool and Kids Club.  If you like to get outdoors, there are plenty of activities for you to choose from here.  From dolphin watching to kite surfing to golfing, not to mention a wide range of water sports activities from yachting to skiing.  Here you can indulge your adventurous side or just take it easy at your own pace.

The marina has two basins; Sunset Basin and La Balise Basin.  Sunset Basin has three walkways and include the Orca Dock, Risso and West Piers with mooring facilities for 22 vessels of up to 12 metres in length and 1 catamaran. La Balise Basin has the White Shark Pier, Spinner Dock, Humpback and Pilot Wharf.  It has a berth capacity for 30 vessels between 9 and 12 metres in length, 4 vessels up to 15 metres and 1 catamaran.  Marina services will also be available with Marina Management able to deal with minor repairs and supply of petrol and diesel for your vessel.

The residential properties are all located on the water’s edge, are built on freehold land and have easy access to the docks and their own mooring facilities.  There are 113 luxury residences in total including the following:

• 17 Villas that range from 3 bedroom residence of 429 m2 to 5 bedroom properties of 482 m2. The land plots vary from 1,175 m2 to 3,320 m2. All villas are either look out to the canals or the river and have spacious rooms and their own private garden. Villas that face the canals have their own private shipping berth, whilst the river facing villas will have a berth at Dock Orca. The Villas have all been designed with open plan living in mind, giving them a contemporary feel and bringing the inside and outside together.
• 13 Marina Quay Duplexes are available with 3 bedrooms, each with their own ensuite. The duplexes are approximately 200m2 in size and have their own direct access mooring. These properties are situated in the centre of the marina, and face either the Sunset Basin or Balie Basin.
• 38 Marina Duplexes that are approximately 200 m2 in size, with 3 bedrooms and ensuites.  These residences will face either the Balise Basin or the Canal, providing a unique marina living experience.  Each also has their own direct mooring.
• 45 Canal Duplexes that have either 2 bedrooms (175 m2) or 3 bedrooms (190 m2) and ensuite bathrooms.

The properties all have international standard fittings and prices vary from US$865,000 to US$1.6 million for duplexes and from US$2.6 million for villas. Construction has commenced and is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2013.

If you only plan on spending part of the year in your Mauritian home, you can add your property to the rental pool which is known as the La Balise Marina Experience.  Rental properties will be managed by Veranda Leisure and Hospitality , who will offer long-term rentals and ensure that the residence is available to the owner for an agreed period.  It is estimated that an occupancy rate of 15% will be sufficient to recover costs of the property.

About the Developers and Promoters: ENL Group is a conglomerate that does a range of activities including property development in Mauritius.  It owns 40% of Villas Valriche, a luxury development that it completed and also has developed several high profile commercial and business facilities on the island.
