Kingfisher 30

Kingfisher 30 is a 29 ′ 11 ″ / 9.1 m monohull sailboat designed by R.A.G. Nierop and built by Westfield Engineering Co. (Marine) Ltd. starting in 1970.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

I am interested in purchasing a Kingfisher 30 (there are 2 available near me!!!) Can anyone suggest whether there are particular things to look out for? or are there any issues with the boats themselves? Cheers

Very well designed and built if a little unorthodox, and rare. No doubt you've found the Kingfisher owners website. I can't recal the URL but you can Google it in seconds. The keels are fabricated from steel sheet. The two that I've seen out of the water both had serious rust problems in the keels. All very fixable but definitely worth examing carefully. I bought a Sabre 27 in the end as all the Kingfishers I'd looked at were very shabby, but super seaworthy boats. Good luck! Regards, Mudhook

There's one for sale on the Wicormarine brokerage (Portsmouth near Porchester)01329 237112. Pal of mine had had a 26 for a number of years, no real problems other than the usual agerelated stuff for a boat that old.

You probably know this already, but Chay Blyth sailed one from UK to Cape Town (and back) many years ago. Not sure about this bit, but I think he'd entered her in the Golden Globe Race (alongside: RKJ, Moitessier, Tetley, Crowhurst, etc)? Chay decided the boat wasn't really ideal for racing in the Southern Ocen, if I recall correctly (strange that he could ever thought that she would be really).

Owned a K30 for several years -super boat.Cast iron keel store 40 gallons of diesel in each making about 80 gallons storage. Very good sea boats, with the usual limitation of bilge keelers not pointing quite as well as fin. Very heavily constructed, I seem to remember that mine weighed over 7 tonnes, which in a blow makes the difference between a reasonably comfortable ride and the continual slamming that you get on lightweight modern 30 footers. My engine was a 30 year old Ford diesel which started first time every time, and shoved the boat along quite merrily at about 6 knots. To be honest we used the rear cabin as a sail store/inflatable store, and slept on the saloon and the bow berths. The is a very active Kingfishers Owners association which is www.KYOA.org.uk If you contact them they will no doubt be able to help even by giving you a trial sail in a boat, so you have got some idea of what they are like. Met a bloke last year who have sailed a junk rigged K26 to St Lucia and back to see his relatives over there

Overworking the memory cells here, but I'm pretty sure Chay sailed the Kingfisher 30. I recall reading his book years ago, and can visualise the picture of the boat in Cape Town with his wife on board (she'd flown out, but I think she sailed with him on the return trip). John Ridgeway, Chay's partner in the Atlantic row, also entered in a small production built boat, but pulled out earlier. I'll have a google around to see if my mind is can find anything.

OK, Chay sailed a Kingfisher 30 called 'Dytiscus' to 'just beyond Cape Town'. She had 20% more ballast than the standard boat. Now, I'm off to find something about John Ridgeway (my mind is telling me he sailed a Westerly).

[ QUOTE ] Met a bloke last year who have sailed a junk rigged K26 to St Lucia and back to see his relatives over there [/ QUOTE ] More on this in an old JRA copy: RABBIT Copied from KYOA website: [ QUOTE ] Kingfisher 30 Reviews and Adventures (1) The following is a report from CHAY BLYTH sailing a Kingfisher 30 Position 35 40'S 27 55'E I've now been at sea for 96 days, that's over three months, having covered approximately 9,000 miles both in the North and South Atlantic. I've seen all sorts of weather - the worst is probably the squalls - they seem to come from nowhere. I suggest you read and see the pictures of Sir Francis Chichester's boat about Gypsy Moth IV - the chapter about the Roaring Forties - that's exactly what its like. I am very impressed by the strength of Dytiscus - you really have a first class boat in the Kingfisher 30. She has taken some fantastic seas and she still comes up proud. I have been in two hurricanes in an open rowing boat so I suppose I am critical without thinking - but here with Dytiscus I find it most difficult to criticize anything. I've had waves right over the cockpit and the saloon with terrific crashes, nothing ever seems to give - she will shake as to get rid of the water then carry on. I was very worried about the windows - I was sure they would break - now I feel I would be quite stunned if they were to break. The thing I probably like best is two fold really - one the minimum of maintenance and the simplicity of everything. It really is a most excellent sea layout and the next is the large and deep cockpit - you feel and are secure when you are in the cockpit. I would feel you could leave a child in it with comparative safety. When the waves are breaking that very efficient self draining cockpit is an enormous boon. I would say to any potential customer - if they want a floating caravan - don't waste your time - if you want a boat for family weekend sailing or the Roaring Forties then come for a sail in a Kingfisher 30. I wish you every success - with a design like you have you must surely succeed. [/ QUOTE ]

Yes it was Rabbit! I could not understand how he crossed the Solent pointing higher than me, he being in a bilge keeler and mine a fin keeler. When I met him in the bar he confessed he had the engine on! Nice bloke

AndrewB

Excellent boat, over-engineered to last forever. Tight accomodation by todays 30' standard (or even yesterdays.) Most have suffered minor pox at some time, best to get one thats been epoxy treated. Cracks round bilge keels speak of hard groundings, but they were built like tanks and rarely leak (unlike Westerlys, etc). Well actually they are tanks, for the fuel, which are completely inaccessible for maintenance, so check they are working OK. Lead ballast may mean leaded fuel, whether you want it or not!

[ QUOTE ] OK, Chay sailed a Kingfisher 30 called 'Dytiscus' to 'just beyond Cape Town'. She had 20% more ballast than the standard boat. Now, I'm off to find something about John Ridgeway (my mind is telling me he sailed a Westerly). [/ QUOTE ] I stand corrected, thanks NealB, I thought it was Ridgeway went off in the K30, and Blyth had something else. Last time I saw a boat of Ridgeways was in Village Bay St Kilda, part of his o/bound school fleet I think English Rose? nice boat. Bill.

I've not found much about John Ridgeway's Golden Globe boat, though she was called 'English Rose IV'. Ridgeway retired before leaving the Atlantic. My subconscious keeps telling me she was a Westerly 30 bilge keeler, but my conscious brain is not so sure.

I'm certain that Chay's old K30 Dytiscus is berthed in the Walton Backwaters these days - in the pretty old-world basin by the town. I've often admired her on my visits to this charming slice of yachty paradise.

Hello, I have a Kingfisher 30 s. Much scorned by those owning a straight 30. This is the version that has an extra bit stuck on the top and bottom in an attempt to make her sail better. Happy to advise on any specific questions however in a nutshell she is very seaworthy, Fun to sail and has a safe centre cockpit good for a family. Original Ford Watermota engines are getting on but mine plods away at 5.5 knots all day ! Frequently as I am a lousy sailor. Failing in the transmission is that it has a direct drive 1:1 gearbox which stops you using the potential of the 30ish hp available. Some have been changed but the bits required are not ebay popular items ! Not something to put you off though. If you decide to buy one the owners club have a decent rally on the south coast yearly which for me is well worth the sail from the East coast. Good luck.

She had much work carried out in 2012 including blasting and priming of her bilge keels, her mainsail was serviced and a new mainsail cover was made together with a new sprayhood, she was also re-rigged, both standing and running rigging. Overall thoroughly good value for such a large cruising boat.

A fellow dropped into my office a couple of months ago with a novel idea. He is the owner of a Power Scow which is a type of boat I would expect only a few readers of my design write-ups to be familiar with. A power scow is pretty much what the name says; it is a powered barge on the water long used in the Southeast Alaska fisheries as buy boats which are boats that goes out to the fishing grounds, buys fish from the fishing boats and sells ice and other limited supplies to the fishermen. After filling their own holds with fresh caught fish, the buy boat heads off to the nearest town or cannery to offload. This chap has a particularly nice power scow built in the 1940s and he has done a yeoman’s job of keeping her in good shape and running condition. She has the latest fillet machines, flash freezing capabilities and vacuum packing on board and for these premium line caught salmon and halibut, she does an extraordinary job of keeping the fish fresh, clean, and ready for the freezer or the skillet.

But back to our visit — you see he is a visionary type of guy always thinking out into the future with a keen eye on the prize of keeping his power scow working hard and efficiently and also keeping several fish markets and a growing internet market supplied with his amazing product. These Alaskan fish are of such quality that anyone could provide them a place in their diet without fear or regret. But he had a new vision one that was just at the wee starting place of forming shape and that is where his visit with me came into the picture. He was thinking that there might be a small number of individuals who are in their late middle years, perhaps even retired from their first careers, but not yet ready to hang it all up. These individuals might also want a bit of adventure in their lives, ready to see waters and areas that they hadn’t the time to do earlier in their lives and careers. And so he was thinking that these hardy souls might be interested in setting up small fishing businesses built around the design that I am outlining here and built around his power scow.

kingfisher 30 sailboat

So let’s take a closer look at the Kingfisher design that I came up with. She is not a huge boat at just over 30 feet in length but with that utility of staying close to the mothership, she really doesn’t need to be much longer and therefore have good fuel economy and seaworthy comfort for the crew. She can be rigged for either hand trolling (non-powered gurdies which control the lines for bringing the fish into the boat) or she can be powered with a small hydraulic pump that would run off the engine and can be rigged as a power troller. There are twin 18 foot long trolling poles on either side of the single mast and these are lowered to about a 45 degree angle off the port and starboard sides of the boats helping to keep the fishing lines out of each other’s way. They can also be used to set small paravanes for running when the weather is really snotty and these simple gear additions can really make the difference between just a crappy day and one that could provide you with real story fodder. If you are anything like me, even though I like a good story, the older I get, the less I desire to experience those “really good” story days if you follow my drift. Anyway, the paravanes work very well at allowing the boat to continue into waters that might really blunt the progress of an unstabilized hull.

There is good deck space and instead of a fixed cargo hold (which could be done but a simpler solution is available), we are using large poly plastic totes that are chucked on the deck and when offloading fish, a bag that is held in the tub can be hoisted to the buy boat and a simple cleaning of the deck and totes is all that is necessary to keep the boat clean and organized. Moving forward into the pilothouse, the cabin follows a couple of ideas that I might have tried to hit you over the head with in the past but without hearing much of a thud, I want to try them again and they involve two subjects that need addressing. The first is the head and how to keep the crew and the skipper happy and comfortable. While the Kingfisher concept is one that might involve a single fisherman on board, (and my first inclination was to reduce the need or desire to have anything like a private head compartment on board), upon presenting the preliminary sketches to my co-workers, I was told rather bluntly that the boat would need a head to have any chance at seeing the light of day as a concept. So let’s address the idea of how to deal with a head in a boat and have it be really be functional enough to allow some privacy when being used. One of the features I noticed on lots of working boats, fishing and tug, is that the head compartment is very often not common or connected to the interior of the boat. That is to say they are accessed from the stern or side decks of the boat with an entirely separate door to the deck. And with no common door to the interior of the boat, you have a chance to actually use the head with some semblance of privacy. Once a common door to the inside of the boat gets put in the design, those privacy features go literally out the door. If you use the head for a shower, then you have the additional problem of what to do after adding considerable moisture into the interior of a boat that might be operating in a high humidity environment and the problem of how to truly and easily dry out the boat, which leads nicely into the second thought of mine.

Heat is a problem in most boats that run in the Northwest coastal waters of North America (my favorite and most often frequented waters), and it’s not called the rainy northwest for nothing! It’s not unusual for a typical cruiser or boater to do a long trip up to Alaska and back and never once put on a short sleeved shirt in the whole summer. In fact, we occasionally have summers where wool shirts and jackets are worn every day as a hedge against the cool and moist climate. On virtually all Northwest Coast working boats they fix this problem with a simple and ingenious solution, one that anything from a 20 feet cruiser up to a boat well over a hundred feet in length can use. The solution is an oil cooking range. Some of the best of these and the ones most common in the Northwest are made by the Dickinson company of British Columbia just to the north of my own Washington State. They come in a variety of sizes and configurations and the idea is that they are lit early in the trip, even sometimes before the engine is started, the thermostat and heat control has simple settings and burning diesel or even a cleaner burn with kerosene fuel, they just sit there and heat away, letting the whole interior of the boat stay warm and dry. The cast iron top of the stove radiates the heat very well and a pot can be kept on one of the corners instantly providing you with warm beverage capability whenever desired. If you come into the interior of the boat with wet rain gear, the boat doesn’t instantly fog up with the added moisture and you keep your windows clear and warm your bones up very quickly. I call this the ‘haven of warmth’ theory, and if you ever try it, you too will realize that when you wrap your head around the idea that the boat is always warm and dry no matter what the conditions are outside, you will quickly think of your boat as being protective and a haven of warmth and comfort. So even if we are foolish enough to have the door to the head opening into the interior of the boat, we can still dry her out quickly after taking a hot shower and everything will stay smelling nice and sweet.

I say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and to my eye, this design looks just about right with good utility and function and she is trailerable to boot. With her inboard diesel engine, the fuel economy is good and depending on how much horsepower you give her, the speed can be adjusted from anything in the full displacement range up to semi-displacements speeds. – Sam Devlin

Broker's Comments

The Kingfisher 30 was made famous by Chay Blyth and this one has the higher mast that he recommended. She has seen better days but with some tlc, painting and a good going over with some new equipment she could be a solid cruising yacht.

Breaking News

Local news | watch: senate democratic primary election forum hosted by the sun, fox45, ub, local news | key bridge collapse: recreational boats to get another chance to use temporary channel on sunday.

Boater George Robertson travel pass the Key Bridge wreckage through a temporary channel just opened for recreational boaters to enter or leave Baltimore's harbor. Robertson was to return to Anchorage Marina on March 26 the day the bridge collapsed. (Kenneth K. Lam/Staff)

Recreational boats will again be allowed to pass the site of the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse, this time on Sunday, marking the second opportunity for boaters since the bridge fell three weeks ago.

The Coast Guard said recreational vessels will be able to use the Sollers Point Alternate Channel again, but this time officials will accommodate one-way traffic both into and out of the harbor during two separate 45-minute periods in the morning and two in the evening.

A first round of boats were allowed to use the alternate channel on Tuesday during two hourlong stretches, one in the morning and one in the evening. More than 35 recreational vessels like sailboats and yachts took advantage of the chance to relocate their boats into and out of Baltimore’s harbor, whether bringing in vessels for the summer season or departing for another destination.

On Sunday, from 6:30 a.m. to 7:15 a.m., recreational boats can use the Sollers Point temporary channel to depart the harbor. From 7:15 a.m. to 8 a.m., recreational vessels will be allowed to flow into the harbor, according to a notice from the Coast Guard.

In the evening, outbound vessels will be allowed to transit from 6 p.m. to 6:45  p.m., and inbound boats will transit from 6:45 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Until this week, traffic around the Key Bridge had been closed to recreational boats, with alternate channels reserved for commercially essential vessels that are helping to clear the wreckage.

The 1.6-mile bridge fell into the Patapsco River on March 26 after it was struck by a container ship. Six construction workers died in the collapse, which has also hampered traffic to and from the Port of Baltimore. The Army Corps of Engineers hopes to restore access to the port by the end of May.

Port officials opened a third temporary shipping channel on the northeast side of the fallen Francis Scott Key Bridge on Friday.

The final of three alternative paths for boats around the wreckage of the bridge has a depth of about 20 feet and will allow “limited access for commercially essential vessels,” according to a Key Bridge Unified Command news release. The newest channel has a 300-foot horizontal clearance and a 135-foot vertical clearance.
