XC47 review: is this the best bluewater cruiser ever?

  • Toby Hodges
  • January 25, 2024

The XC47 is marketed as the ‘best bluewater cruiser ever built’ – a very bold claim – but does this powerful yacht actually match the hype?

Product Overview

Price as reviewed:.

We’re close-hauled in 7-10 knots of true wind, making 6-6.5 knots of boat speed, with the helm beautifully balanced and only a degree or two of weather helm. A gentle ease of the XC47 hydraulic backstay in the lulls gives more depth to the sail shape, while a few pumps depowers the rig in the puffs.

It’s a scenario that’s instantly familiar to many thousands of X-Yacht owners over the years. But this isn’t the first beat of a short round the cans race. Instead, we’re on a comfortable serious bluewater cruiser that weighs almost 15 tonnes and has impressive stowage and payload.

The XC47 is a pivotal model for the Danish yard in a slimmed-down range of long distance cruisers. It’s also the first all-new boat without input from co-founder and lead designer Niels Jeppesen, with markedly different styling.

Reducing the number of models in the Xc line allowed effort to be focussed on a yacht that embodies many small but important improvements that came out of extensive consultation with clients who have completed circumnavigations on older Xc models.

The concept of the XC47 hull shape is very similar in the forward sections and distinct stern overhang to previous Xc designs, with the aim of keeping the same easy motion in a seaway. However, in other respects the stern sections have been updated, with a wide transom and soft chines well above the waterline.

The latter markedly increase form stability when heeled, giving more performance when reaching and enabling full sail to be carried for longer in a rising wind. At the same time, the deep canoe body with plenty of rocker that helps create a voluminous hull, with a large payload, is retained.

This is also the first design from X-Yachts with a semi decksaloon layout. Yet when you’re sailing it doesn’t feel like a decksaloon yacht, partly because of a slightly higher cockpit floor that also helps increase volume in the aft cabins, without making it feel as though you’re perched up high when on deck.

On bearing away and hoisting the top-down furling gennaker the wind increased to 12-13 knots as a shower moved overhead. With a true wind angle of around 140°, and the apparent more or less on the beam, boat speed climbed to 8.6 knots. While there are many ways in which this feels like a performance boat, once downwind in a breeze with a kite up you can feel the 15 tonne displacement – and that pronounced rocker – holding the boat back.

XC47 – surfing performance

Nevertheless, when the true wind speed later increased to 17-18 knots, with occasional gusts of 20 we enjoyed spirited sailing, still under gennaker, under full control at 8-9.5 knots, with clear signs the boats would willingly surf on a larger sea. We had a chance to experience this towards the end of my second day on board, in only 12-16 knots of breeze, but with a large following swell. Sailing with the gennaker at a 125-135° true wind angle we surfed readily, hitting a maximum of 11.5 knots under complete control and, surprisingly, maintaining an average speed very close to that of a high performance 43-footer sailing nearby.

I also had the benefit of sailing the boat in light airs – a situation in which many heavier designs fall down, forcing you to motor when the breeze is much less than 10 knots. Close-hauled in 7-10 knots true, we made 5.5-6.5 knots, despite an awkward swell.

The boat retained its lovely feel on the helm in these conditions, with just one or two degrees of weatherhelm. Later on in an easier sea state, we made 7-7.2 knots in 8-9 knots of true wind, tacking through around 85°. And when the breeze eased to just 5-6.5 knots we still maintained a useful 4.5-5.5 knots close-hauled – remarkable figures for a yacht of this type.

Our test XC47’s Elvström Ekko laminate sails that set nicely undoubtedly helped speed, pointing and handling, though the layout of deck hardware is also important. The hydraulic backstay that gives such easy control of sail shape is centrally positioned between the wheels and can be operated equally easily on either tack.

It’s also possible to reach the mainsheet from both helm stations on the XC47, though the traveller is at the aft end of the coachroof. This can be helpful when alone on a gusty night watch as it can be operated from within the protection of the effective sprayhood. One of the few criticisms of the boat we could find is that the 4:1 purchase for the traveller proved inadequate. However, compared to deficiencies we see at times on other prototype boats this is a minor issue that’s easy to rectify on production models.

Helm stations are well aft in the boat, especially compared to centre cockpit bluewater designs. However, the ability of today’s autopilots is such that on passage it is likely to be steering the bulk of the time. If a backup system is specified – and the boat has multiple charging sources for redundancy (such as regeneration, a genset and adequate solar) – the set up can be relied on for many thousands of miles, assuming diligent routine maintenance.

Unlike many decksaloon yachts all lines are handled at the cockpit, even with the standard slab reefing mainsail. The deck layout is based around a pair of Harken winches on each coaming outboard of the cockpit benches and just ahead of the helm stations. The arrangement broadly works well, particularly as a lot of effort has been made to keep friction at bay.

A horizontal bar in the decksaloon windows takes the halyards and other lines aft from the mast, running in stainless steel conduits and with minimal deflection, markedly reducing friction. Even so, most owners will want the electric option for the winches.

yacht xc 47

The Xc47 is a pivotal model for the Danish yard.

The test XC47 was set up with a 106% headsail and there’s also provision for a self-tacking jib, with a recessed foredeck track that can be retrofitted if necessary, even on boats with a full teak deck.

To reduce effort associated with sail handling, without compromising sail shape, around 80% of larger X-Yachts leave the yard with the optional composite Furlerboom. This makes hoisting, lowering and reefing all straightforward when close-hauled, especially if the jib is trimmed on and therefore bends the airflow further forward over the mainsail.

X-Yachts tells me the boat is designed to handle full main with the apparent wind well aft of the beam in up to 25 knots of true wind. That seems to be a fair assumption, given the ease with which it handled 20-knot gusts reaching with the gennaker. However, when sailing downwind in a rising breeze the system makes it important to think further ahead than on a boat with slab reefing (that allows sail to be shortened with the apparent wind aft of the beam).

yacht xc 47

The layout around the pedestals makes it easy to sail short-handed with instruments and winches to hand. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud/imacis.fr/EYOTY

With the set up on the test XC47 it may be possible to drop the first reef in with the wind aft of the beam, but beyond that the luff of the sail tends to creep forwards along the mandrel in the boom, so it’s not feasible to take deeper reefs in a similar manner. That means luffing up to bring the apparent wind forward of the beam, making it a much livelier experience.

On deck stowage includes a forward sail locker with space for two furling sails, plus an anchor locker that will take 150m of chain.

Instead of a space-consuming tender garage the XC47 has a huge lazarette aft, plus dedicated liferaft stowage. An optional novel davit system is integrated with the hinged bathing platform such that the dinghy is automatically launched when the platform is lowered. For longer passages the tender can also be stowed on the foredeck.

Power decisions

At 640lt the standard water tankage is not overly generous, though that will not be a concern for those who specify a watermaker. Equally there are plenty of boats in this market that offer more than 500lt of fuel tankage, though the hybrid propulsion system (a €120,000 upgrade) fitted to the test boat, a pre-production prototype, is significantly more efficient than a conventional diesel motor.

An increasing number of X-Yachts’ clients are now asking for hybrid propulsion. The system developed for the XC47 uses Oceanvolt’s 25kW Servoprop, which just won the overall DAME innovation award in November (see page 14), in place of a standard 109hp diesel. This is coupled to a 46.8kWh battery pack that’s only marginally smaller than that of a Tesla Model 3 car, plus there’s an 11kW Fischer Panda range-extending generator. This produces enough power to drive the boat at 6.8 knots in flat water and no wind, without input from the battery bank. The efficiency of this combination is such that Oceanvolt reckons range under power is increased by around 30% compared to diesel propulsion.

At 8.5 knots boat speed the regenerating function produced 500W of power, a figure which ought to increase by 30-50% with the correct propeller fitted.

Stowage solutions

Below decks X-Yachts has obviously spent time and money on creating an arrangement that feels spacious, but where you can move around at sea safely. For a bluewater boat the stowage is also worth particular mention thanks to the numerous lockers of all sizes.

A combination of the changes in the hull shape and the decksaloon configuration mean interior volume is the same as that of the Xc50 and 21% larger than the now-discontinued Xc45. The decksaloon of the new model has a raised sole aft in the main accommodation area, with a space underneath it for tankage, battery banks and other technical items. This leaves most of the space under the bunks and settees free of systems and therefore available for stowage of larger items. The main exception on the test boat was an aircon unit under the port settee.

There is a lot more interior storage than a Pure X model of similar size would have and it’s neatly divided into both large and small compartments, drawers and so on. This is time-consuming and expensive to produce, but makes a huge difference when spending extended periods of time on board.

yacht xc 47

Superb stowage in the galley (and throughout the interior). Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud/imacis.fr/EYOTY

There are also reassuringly deep fiddles, including a pair on the galley worktop that can be turned upside down to give a big flat work area when in port.

In the design phase X-Yachts created a full-scale mockup of the interior and heeled it to 20º in both directions. The outcome is worthy of praise – it feels spacious, there’s relatively easy circulation for people, yet it doesn’t feel like there are awkward wide open spaces that are difficult to negotiate at sea.

This process might be considered as overkill and unnecessary expense, but important outcomes include extra handholds below decks, plus recesses in galley and chart table for fiddles so they can also double as effective handholds. That’s the kind of the level of detail needed to create a top notch product.

In any case, while it remains unusual, building full-scale mockups is by no means unprecedented. At the other end of the scale, for example, back when the Laser SB3 sportsboat was being developed the team at The Laser Centre put a mockup of the cockpit in the company’s offices to sit in during coffee breaks. They quickly figured out exactly the optimum position for every element of deck hardware across all manoeuvres. That boat was also a huge success from the outset.

Forward master berth has yet more large and accessible stowage. Photo: Ludovic Fruchaud/imacis.fr/EYOTY

On the XC47 the owner’s cabin will impress thanks to a combination of space, light and ventilation, plus excellent stowage. The aft cabins, which benefit from the additional beam carried aft and extra clearance below the cockpit floor, have a very flexible layout. They can be arranged with twin side-by-side berths, or as a huge double.

There’s a massive amount of easily accessed stowage – the inboard cushion, for instance lifts on gas struts to reveal a large top tray for easily accessed items, with deeper stowage below that. It’s also possible to specify a two cabin option with one of the quarter cabins forming a large utility space, plus a single bunk, and up to 300lt of extra refrigeration capacity.

Throughout the interior of the XC47 there are a lot of opening overhead hatches, including a forward facing one above the head of the bed in the master cabin forward, which helps maximise natural ventilation at anchor. There’s also a very neat covered ventilation system for the heads and galley area that can be left open at sea. It’s one of the best ideas of its type that I have seen and certainly proved effective during our test.

One of the most notable aspects of the interior is how impressively quiet the XC47 is when going to windward, with none of the creaking or groaning that’s often encountered. Hull construction is vacuum infused, post-cured foam core sandwich using E-glass and epoxy. Carbon reinforcement is used strategically in structural members, particularly in the bottom of the hull, allowing these to be smaller and therefore intrude less into the accommodation space.

Carbon is also used in the coachroof to distribute the mainsheet traveller loads without resorting to structural pillars in the galley area, while the boat still features X-Yachts’ trademark galvanised frame to distribute keel and rig loads.

While it has some conservative traits this is an innovative yacht in many respects. X-Yachts has tried hard to retain good sailing performance, with a responsive feel, in a heavier design. Equally a lot of thought, knowledge and development work has clearly gone into this model, without temptation to cut corners. The result is a very nicely presented package and an excellent execution of this type of boat that grew on me during the test. Is it the best bluewater cruiser ever built? The answer to that question is complex and nuanced. There are some whose needs will best served by a multihull, while some of those who choose a monohull will happily sacrifice load carrying ability for planing performance. Equally this part of the market has historically been dominated by centre cockpit designs for the protection they offer together with larger owners’ cabins aft with more privacy. However, few will equal the enticing combination of the very solid and reassuring feel of the Xc47, the pleasure of sailing this yacht, and its very civilised and well organised accommodation.

The first thing most people will notice when looking at the lines of the X-yachts XC 47 for sale, is the shape of the superstructure. "We have introduced what we like to call a "semi deck saloon. This solution provides a better view of the surroundings, when under deck with more natural light, and an opportunity for multilevel floors." Says Thomas Mielec To make sure the X-Yachts Xc 47 is capable of carrying provisions for long periods of time, the yacht has efficient storage volumes hidden behind the sturdy, yet elegantly crafted surfaces of the interior.  CEO Kræn Brinck Nielsen highlights, "Danish design and architecture are famous for clean and timeless style, and X-Yachts has always been a part of this tradition. X-Yacht owners often talk about a special X feeling, something that greets you every time you step on board. We know this feeling, and for us, it's a constant process to refine and enhance it each time. When looking at the X-Yachts Xc 47, l'm proud of how far we have come." X-yachts XC 47 Cabin Layout:

3 cabins (Standard Layout) 2 cabins (Optional starboard aft layout)

Shorthanded with ease and style:

Most sailing today, even bluewater cruising , is performed with a small crew, with often just a couple of crew members, which the development team has kept in mind right from the outset of the design process. Some of the design features and functions have been seen before on other premium yachts, but on theX-yachts Xc 47 for sale, they are executed with an unprecedented sense of style. The cockpit layout has been designed to give the helmsman the capability of handling all lines. Four winches – two on each side, are positioned in front of the wheels. All relevant trim lines are led in channels under the deck from the mast to the steering position, with jammers reachable for the helmsman. The traveller has been re-positioned from the cockpit to a position in front of the sprayhood. Apart from creating an efficient workspace, this cockpit arrangement leaves room for a comfortable living space, with the sail handling concentrated to the area at the helm station. Near the transom, a large aft deck accommodates a comfortable full-width seating area behind the wheels, as well as a nice sunbathing area. As it should be on a true offshore yacht, the cockpit is deep, well protected, and with a closed transom.

Updated X-Yachts Design:

The hull lines have maintained the deep V-shaped bow sections, generous rocker, and higher stern overhang from previous Xc models, providing the well-known comfortable seagoing characteristics. Furthermore, the aft of theX-Yachts Xc 47 for sale has a modern, wider stern section, incorporating a subtle soft chine that provides extra form and stability, improved performance and more space in the aft cabins.

Carbon reinforced:

TheX-yachts Xc 47 for sale is built from a full vacuum infused epoxy/e-glass sandwich, together with our famous signature steel frame. Areas exposed to high loads are reinforced with carbon fiber, a part of making the yacht stronger without adding excess weight.

Stainless Steel Winches:

Stainless steel self-tailing Andersen Winches, which can be upgraded to be electrical powered are part of Xc 50's comprehensive standard quality.

The Newport to Ensenada International Yacht Race is back on the waters again for its 76th year. About 150 vessels departed from Newport Harbor Friday and sailed past the Balboa Pier, where onlookers marveled at the scene.

The race, as it does every year, began in Newport Beach. Two tracks are available for those participating — one to San Diego and the other to Ensenada. Weather predictions, according to the Newport Ocean Sailing Assn., which organizes the race, indicated the race would be smooth sailing on Friday.

With relatively gentle winds in the morning, wind speeds were expected to pick up from the west and remain steady through the evening.

Crowds gather at the end of the Balboa Pier to watch boats get into position.

The Newport to Ensenada race first began in 1948.

As of Friday afternoon, the Taniwha appeared to be leading in the race to Ensenada. It was followed by the Bottle Rocket and the Fast Exit II.

Totally charming and very simple diesel powered Danish-built day sailer, same family almost since new. Sassafras spent most of her life back East (Annapolis and Vermont), was moved to CA in 2016 and is being offered for sale for the first time since. The BB looks like a classic wood sailboat from the 1920s but it's a fiberglass hull with a modern underbody so you have the best of moth worlds (and note that it has a ballast-to-displacement ratio of 54% so is very sfiff which is what you want on the Bay!).

Single cylinder 10hp Yanmar diesel just serviced (and most little day sailers are powered by outboards!), roller furler head sail with 95% jib, sails and teak decks in very good shape; Sassafra s is the only BB10 for sale in the U.S. at present and must be seen to be appreciated.

Price just significantly reduced and offers encouraged.

A Soling with the cabin house of a Dragon? The BB 10 Meter is the creation of Borge Borreson and his son, Anders, who designed and originally built the boat in Denmark. In the past, the Borresons built Solings ( one of which won the gold medal in the 1980 Olympics) and Dragons, and the exposure to the bracing classes made the younger Borreson keen enough to obtain his degree in naval architecture. Then they had the idea of producing a boat of their own design, a performance-oriented family racer that was easy to sail. This boat is a natural progression for men who have been producing Dragons and Solings, and they have managed to keep that aesthetic appeal in their new creation.

Many of you have seen and some have had the pleasure of sailing a Soling, so it may be helpful to use the Olympic keelboat as a comparison:

First, enlarge a Soling about 20 per cent (enlarging a boat is not this straightforward in yacht design, but this is just an exercise). This boat now has the same freeboard and length as the BB-10, but the Borresons have produced a yacht with less beam. And you thought that a blown-up Soling looked slim. The sailing stability of a boat is always an interesting characteristic to study, and from the designer's point of view one of the most challenging to tune to perfection.

The BB-10 has a lot of ballast (54 per cent of its weight is lead) which will help offset its very narrow beam. Our overgrown Soling has about the same percentage of ballast, and you have to perform all kinds of outrageous hiking maneuvers to keep it sailing upwind at peak performance. Mom and Dad don't have the knees for that kind of stuff anymore. So how does the BB-10 do it? Two important factors: (1) It has enough extra displacement to give the hull a greater righting moment, and (2) it has a smaller sail-plan.

The sail-plan arrangement is very sensible. For those super light-air days you can pull out the big genoa, but often the little lapper will be all that is required to scoot around the lake, and you won't be, overpowered. To get you into those shallow spots for lunch, Borreson has kept the draft down to four feet, 10 inches.

The resulting keel's aspect ratio is a little low for efficiency, but has lots of area. The sailing characteristics resulting from combining that keel with the narrow hull should be minimal leeway and very little chance of stalling the keel-even coming out of one of those tacks when your crew, in the heat of the moment, has wrapped the sheet counterclockwise around the winch.

Their brochure states that "standing headroom is only four feet, nine inches, though sitting headroom is ample." I'm not sure that "standing headroom" is the correct term here, but we will let the figures speak for themselves. The interior is not meant to be lush. It's a bit like camping in a fiberglass tent. There are settee berths for sitting or snoozing and a galley module that pulls out from under the cockpit when required. Just forward of the mast are several substantial built-in lockers, and forward of those a large V berth.

With more than a hundred boats sailing in Europe, this design is not new. According to Bob Scharf of Scandinavian Yachts in Annapolis, Maryland, the bid to expand the BB- lO's market began with a brief period of production in the United States (about 20 were built) but they are now moving their molds to Whitby Boat Works in Ontario.

The Canadian dollar, combined with Whitby's quality construction, makes the move look attractive, and if all goes as planned, the first boat off the line should be slipping into the water just about now.

BB-10 is a 32 ′ 9 ″ / 10 m monohull sailboat designed by Børresen Brothers and built by Børresen Bådebyggeri starting in 1977.

Drawing of BB-10

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The BB10 is constructed of fiberglass sandwich with balsam core in the deck, cabin, and hull. The original teak deck was removed when the boat was upgraded in 2011-13. The spade rudder and low draft keel combined with the long and narrow lines of the BB 10 give it the appearance of a much larger boat. But with a displacement of 4,956 pounds it is still trailerable. The BB10 has a high aspect rig, designed to carry a main, spinnaker, jib, genoa, or gennaker. Reefing can be done quickly and by one person. The long cockpit and comfortably fit a crew of four plus the helms-person.

The BB10 is for the sailing purist. This boat was designed with a disregard for ratings and attention to speed. Under the PHRF, for example, the BB10 is rated very high at 120. This reflects the yachts spectacular performance potential. Speeds of over 15 knots downwind have been recorded frequently. It is for those who enjoy most the thrill of moving through the water efficiently, using only the wind. Acceleration is incredible and it sails with astonishing speed, a minimum of fuss and a great sense of security. The BB10 is a head turner and other vessels alter course to come near and ask questions.

This is a two-owner boat, one of about 150 built. An architect in San Francisco and his sailing partner purchased her new in 1982. The current owner purchased the boat in 2011 and undertook over $30,000 repairs and upgrades. She was re-launched in 2013 and has been used for day sailing with family and friends around Santa Cruz. The current owner has serviced the boat regularly and maintained at a high level, including repair of blisters below the water line, stripping the bottom paint and applying two layers of epoxy barrier plus two coats of Trinidad 3, replacing the prop shaft and cutlass bearing, and other maintenance in 2019.

bb10 sailboat

  • Condition: Used
  • Make: Børresen
  • Model: BB10 metre
  • Type: Sailboat
  • Location: San Diego, California, United States
  • I have three mains. One Pentex, one Kevla, and the black sail that is fancy carbon fiber trick material.
  • Jibs are 100 (Kevlar) only use in heavy air, 130 Pentex, 150 light Pentex, 155 that is carbon fiber like the main.
  • Two mast head spinnakers, a reaching one and a downwind spinnaker . Also a mast asymmetrical sail. A fractional spinnaker for heavy air.
  • The Pentax sails are fairly old but are still in good shape. They are pretty heavy and we dont use them to race much in the light air we have in San Diego.
  • The carbon sails are from Elliot Patison sails in Newport beach.

Last haul out was May of 2017.

Someone asked about when the last survey was done: I had the boat surveyed when I bought it in San Francisco by Peter Minkowitz. Included is a photo of the boat when I got it from San Francisco (chevy truck with boat on trailer) - you can get an idea of how much work I put into restoring and rebuilding the boat -.

Sorry - no trades, no swaps - I have too many projects now, looking to simplify.

Relisting as the fellow who was going to buy it had the sale of his boat fall through. Then the stockmarket took a nosedive and he had some of his fun money dry up. Yadda yadda yadda -- you get the drill. If you are serious, hit me up. No keel kickers please, serious folks only. Thanks very much.

Someone asked if it has a sink/stove: No, it does not. There was an option to have one pull out on the side of one of the side seats (from the cockpit) but the guy I got it from took it out way back when for better balance, less weight, and frankly since it was not very useful or needed.

Another asked who owned the boat in San Francisco: It was owned by a psychologist guy named Bob, who was a member at Tiberon Yacht Club and the boats name was Aventura III. If you know the boat from those days, you will know how much work and rebuilding I have put into it. I literally have over $70,000 in receipts into this boat. I probably got a little carried away but its a fun boat, easy to do.

Some info on the builder. Good news is they are still in business but better if you happen to live in denmark. I believe the Borreson Soling 27' is raced nearly world wide. Sailboats built by Brresen Bdebyggeri by year on Sailboatdata.com The description of the BB 10 says there were only 150 of them built which might help explain the high prices. BB-10 sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com Looks like a pretty fast boat to me, and nice.

This type of boat (long and narrow) is quite popular in Scandinavia. There are plenty of similar boats, to very affordable prices. Some known similar danish designs are Aphrodite 101 / Bianca 101 / Elvström 101 (same design) Ylva Molich X (not an exhaustive list) These all stems from the 70/80-ties, more modern examples are eg the Luffe(s), Faurby, ... These kind of boats are even more popular in Sweden, where there are many different designs. Known from the same period are the Swede 30 (S-30), Swede 55, ad later on Swede 40 / 45. Also Wasa had a series 30 -- 55. Peter Norlin designed some in a similar way, as the Avance 33 / 36, Omega 42 (OK, we are getting bigger). There is also, from the same time, the Cayenne 42 and the corrsponding Carrera Helmsman. The more usual Helmsmans are Lady and Senorita (both similar to the BB10) ... list is long. Many of these had their popuarity peak 30 years ago, prices are low today. OK it is far from the US! Some of these can probably be found also in the US, otherwise there is always the possibility in buying in Scandinavia and get it transported to the US. /J

I just found out that they still build them! Price around 100,000 USD There are 6 used on the market in DK right now in the range from 30,000 to 60,000 USD

While this is true, most people around here still see the BB 10 as the most beautiful of them all. It is a fantastic sailboat and amazing to look at. Just kind of perfect. (For sailing.. not much room in there ) Click to expand...

Check out the Canadian built "Abbot" boats, in particular the 33 and 36 in the link below: Sailboats built by Abbott Boats Inc. by year on Sailboatdata.com .. not quite as 'sexy', the venerable Contessa 32 http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=1414 These are not daysailers, the Abbots are somewhat atypical cruiser/racers of the time, (narrow beam, frac rigs) and the Contessa is a serious cruising boat with a strong reputation.

Wow! Brings back memories! We had BB10 US1, bought in 1981. She was from Denmark and from what the moulds were made to produce them in Florida. Previously brought from Denmark was DK 50. Went to weather like crazy! 70* or less between tacks. Other boats swore we were sailing straight into the wind. I was spoiled forever. She needed little wind to sail, but did get wet when it blew. Once in a good breeze, a Hobie 16 couldn't overtake us, so turned away.

Classic30

They certainly are fast boats. There's a BB10 for sale at my club here (a least I think it's still for sale.. it's been sitting there for 2-3 years now). The owner is our club captain who decided one day to buy a brand-new Archambault A31 to try to stay ahead of the Adams 10's in our club racing series. It's in pristine racing condition and stored on the hard under a full cover. He certainly wasn't asking anything like $100k for it, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with it - other than it's not as fast as a new A31.. or a first-rate Adams 10. PM me if you'd like the details.

If anyone is interested in buying my BB10, I am in San Diego - really well cared for boat - dark blue, white trim full compliment of sails, roller furling, and a saildrive added. $39k

The best bluewater sailboats under 40 feet (we analyzed 2,000 boats to find out)

What are the best bluewater sailboats under 40 feet?

Last year we analyzed 2,000 offshore designs to bring you a list of the most popular bluewater sailboats .

However, most people are searching for a boat in a particular size class. So, we decided to do a double-click and look at the best sailboats under 40 feet for offshore sailing.

If you’re interested in an even smaller boat, there are plenty of great options under 30 feet in our list of the best small sailboats for sailing around the world .

The characteristics that make a sailboat a bluewater sailboat are a hotly debated topic, so we wanted to use real-world data and find out what cruisers are using to cross oceans and sail around the world.

We looked at 2,000 boats that entered the Pacific Puddle Jump  (PPJ) over the last 12 years. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the PPJ, it’s a rally that crosses the Pacific ocean.  We took part in 2017 and had a ball!

Also, if you’re looking to buy one of the bluewater boats on this list, you might want to check out our post on the best places to buy used boats and how to find free or cheap boats for sale .

Just be aware that a bluewater boat isn’t necessarily offshore-ready. Our top five picks are all older boats and will undoubtedly require work.

Every cruiser we know made substantial repairs and additions before going offshore: adding watermakers , life rafts, solar panels, and more.

Also, always have a boat inspected by a professional and accredited marine surveyor before buying it or taking it offshore.

So, without further preamble, here are the best bluewater sailboats under 40 feet.

The best bluewater sailboats under 40 feet

1. the westsail 32.

Westsail 32 sailboat

The Westsail 32 is one of the most iconic bluewater cruisers. Built by the Westsail Corporation in the 1970s, this plucky, small sailboat has developed a cult following over the decades. Since 2009, 19 have set out to cross the Pacific in the PPJ rallies.

The Westsail 32 is known for its sturdy construction, seaworthiness, and classic looks. In fact, it set the standard for what a real bluewater cruiser should look like. In 1973, the Westsail 32 was featured in Time magazine and inspired many Americans to go cruising.

Though popular, this boat has earned the unenviable nickname “ Wetsnail 32″, a reference to its poor ability to windward and sluggish performance. But Westsail 32 owners don’t care that they won’t be winning any races.

What the boat lacks in speed it makes up for in classic looks and excellent offshore cruising characteristics. Many owners have crossed oceans and circumnavigated the globe in their Westsail 32s.

2. Tayana 37

Tayana 37 sailboat

The Tayana 37 is a wildly popular Bob Perry design. It first rolled off the production line in 1976 and there are now several hundred of them sailing the world’s oceans.

Above the waterline, the Tayana 37 boasts beautiful traditional lines. However, Perry wanted to avoid the unenviable (read: sluggish) performance characteristics, associated with double-enders.

So, he designed the Tayana 37 with a cut-away long keel and moderate displacement, maintaining the classic look, while achieving reasonable performance.

The Tayana 37 has a devoted following of offshore enthusiasts. Since 2009, 12 Tayana 37s have set out to cross the Pacific in the PPJ rallies.

Read more about the Tayana 37 in this Practical Sailor review .

3. Hans Christian 38T

Black and white photo of Hans Christian 38T Sailboat

The Hans Christian 38T is a full-keeled, heavy displacement bluewater boat with a long bowsprit and a clipper bow, giving it a distinctive appearance. It was first introduced in 1976 and was produced until the early 1990s.

If you hadn’t already guessed, the “T” in the name stands for “Traditional”. Like many boats on this list, it takes a cue from Crealock’s famous Westsail 32 which sparked a craze in the 1970s and 80s for Scandinavian-style doubled-enders.

It’s gained a reputation as a capable and seaworthy cruising yacht. Many owners have crossed oceans and completed circumnavigations in Hans Christian 38Ts.

By our count, eight Hans Christian 38Ts have participated in Pacific Puddle Jump rallies over the last 12 years.

4. Island Packet 380

Drawing of Island Packet 380 sailboat

I’ve always considered Island Packets the Rolls-Royce of the bluewater boat world. Their distinctive cream-colored topsides make them easy to spot and their robust bluewater construction makes them the envy of many far-flung anchorages.

Designed by Bob Johnson and built by Island Packet Yachts in Florida, the Island Packet 380 was first introduced in 1998. 169 were built before 2004, over which time it gained a reputation as a capable and comfortable offshore cruiser.

Having been built in the ’90s and early 2000s, this is a relatively newer boat. In many ways, it offers the best of both worlds, a classic-looking boat with all the modern cruising conveniences.

The Island Packet 380 design prioritizes safety and stability. It also has several offshore features including standard twin bow rollers, a divided anchor locker, and ample storage for cruising gear.

Life below deck is comfortable too. With a 13-foot (4 meter) beam there’s plenty of room for liveaboard amenities.

The Island Packet 380 is a popular choice for long-distance cruising and offshore passages. Since 2009, six Island Packet 380s have set out to cross the Pacific in PPJ rallies.

Read more about the Island Packet 380 in this review by Yachting Monthly .

5. Ingrid 38

Drawing of Ingrid 38 sailboat

The Ingrid 38 is a double-ended sailboat that was originally designed for wood construction in 1938.

In 1971, Bluewater Boat Co. began building a fiberglass version. The design proved hugely popular and more than 140 were built.

With a full keep and heavy displacement, the Ingrid 38 epitomizes the traditional bluewater cruiser. Yet, it remains a well-loved design today. Since 2009, six Ingrid 38s have set out to cross the Pacific in PPJ rallies.

Man bitten by crocodile in Florida Everglades after capsizing sailboat, falling in water

H OMESTEAD, Fla. (AP) — A 68-year-old man fell of a sailboat at a marina in the Florida Everglades and was bitten by a crocodile as he tried to swim to shore, authorities said.

The rare crocodile bite occurred Sunday afternoon at the Flamingo Marina in Everglades National Park and left the man, who was visiting the park, with a laceration to one leg that required medical attention, the National Park Service said.

The Everglades is one of the largest wetlands in the world and according to the National Wildlife Foundation, is the only place in the world where American crocodiles and American alligators co-exist. There are about 1.8 million alligators in Florida but only 2,000 crocodiles.

The man capsized his sailboat in the marina basin and was trying to swim to land with his boat when witnesses saw him go under the water, officials said. Park rangers responded and treated the cut on the man’s leg before he was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

No further information was released on the man's condition.

It's rare for an American crocodile to bite a human, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The only other documented case involving a crocodile biting a human happened in 2014, Lauren Claerbout, a spokeswoman for the agency, said in an email.

It's also rare for alligators to bite humans , Claerbout said. In Florida, there are about eight unprovoked alligators bites to humans annually.

Crocodiles are a federally threatened species. They have narrower, more triangular heads and often prefer coastal, brackish and salt water, while alligators are darker, have broader snouts and are typically found in freshwater,

Rangers and park biologists were investigating the attack and monitoring the suspected crocodile.

The BB 10 (also referred to as the BB10, BB-10 and BB 10 Meter) is a Danish sailboat that was designed by Børge Børresen and his son, Anders Børresen, as a one-design racer and first built in 1977. ... The boat has a draft of 4.80 ft (1.46 m) with the standard keel fitted.

A boat with a BN of 1.6 or greater is a boat that will be reefed often in offshore cruising. Derek Harvey, "Multihulls for Cruising and Racing", International Marine, Camden, Maine, 1991, states that a BN of 1 is generally accepted as the dividing line between so-called slow and fast multihulls.

BB10 - Family Racer: It is every one's dream to own a boat with beautiful lines, excellent sailing qualities and nice, tasteful and comfortable accommodations. The BB 10 Meter offers the sailing community a beautiful 10 meter keel boat that with optimal sailing pleasures that can be easily handled by a small crew.

BB 10 meter, 1984, Annapolis, Maryland, $22,000, Keeping boat. The BB 10 is a very fast, easily sailed daysailer with a surprisingly fine cruising interior. Better looking and faster than other "gentleman daysailers". A BB 10 has sailed transatlantic singlehanded.

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize. Xc 47 Press Release

"Probably the best yacht we ever built"

Wednesday 16th November 2022

Introducing Xc 47

16 November 2022

‘Probably the best cruiser we have ever built’

Strong words from a yard that has produced more than 6,500 yachts over the last 43 years and is considered one of the finest brands in the world. A belief by X-Yachts CEO, Kræn Brinck Nielsen, supported by a strong sense of pride and shared feelings by the whole team behind the new model.

The ideal bluewater cruiser?

The Xc 47 marks the beginning of a completely new generation of XCruising. The concept is built on years of experience and a desire to accommodate the growing number of sailors looking for a true bluewater cruiser.

‘In short, Xc 47 is an elegant high-performance cruiser, built for safe and comfortable sailing on the oceans. Immense focus has been placed on the design to make shorthanded sailing safe and easy’, says Thomas Mielec, director of design & engineering at X-Yachts.

‘Many of our customers share a dream of heading off on a long cruise, often around the world. With this yacht, they will be ready and able to achieve this whenever the opportunity arises.’

yacht xc 47

Shorthanded with ease and style

Most sailing today, even bluewater cruising, is performed with a small crew, with often just a couple of crew members, which the development team has kept in mind right from the outset of the design process. Some of the design features and functions have been seen before on other premium yachts, but on the Xc 47, they are executed with an unprecedented sense of style.

”Semi deck saloon”

The first thing most people will notice when looking at the lines, is the shape of the superstructure.

‘We have introduced what we like to call a “semi deck saloon”’, says Thomas Mielec.

‘This solution provides a better view of the surroundings, when under deck with more natural light, and an opportunity for multilevel floors.’

To make sure the Xc 47 is capable of carrying provisions for long periods of time, the yacht has efficient storage volumes hidden behind the sturdy, yet elegantly crafted surfaces of the interior. CEO Kræn Brinck Nielsen highlights

‘Danish design and architecture are famous for  clean and timeless style, and X-Yachts has always been a part of this tradition. X-Yacht owners often talk about a special X feeling, something that greets you every time you step on board. We know this feeling, and for us, it’s a constant process to refine and enhance it each time. When looking at the Xc 47, I’m proud of how far we have come.’

Updated Xc-design

The hull lines have maintained the deep V-shaped bow sections, generous rocker, and higher stern overhang from previous Xc models, providing the well-known comfortable seagoing characteristics. Furthermore, the aft of the Xc 47 has a modern, wider stern section, incorporating a subtle soft chine that provides extra form and stability, improved performance and more space in the aft cabins.

Full size, heeling mock-up

‘The design process has been different this time’, Thomas Mielec explains.

‘We have built a full size model, a so-called mockup, that can be heeled up to 20 degrees. As far as I know, we are the only yard that has ever done that. This has given us a unique test platform, with the opportunity to test different design scenarios in real life situations. Being able to move around in a physical environment, eliminated numerous lengthy discussions, as everyone could feel and sense right away, what the right solution should be. Not only under conditions as they are when the yacht is docked, but also how things work during sailing when the boat is heeled over.’

Carbon reinforced

The Xc 47 is built from a full vacuum infused epoxy/e-glass sandwich, together with our famous signature steel frame. Areas exposed to high loads are reinforced with carbon fiber, a part of making the yacht stronger without adding excess weight.

The Xc 47 will be launched in 2024.

Amadeus Description

Built by the famous Dynamique Yachts shipyard, and having undergone a total refit in 2018, S/Y Amadeus was designed to please the most demanding of yachtsmen. Built for smooth sailing, this elegant cutter rigged sloop has a sleek hull design, comfortably reaching top speeds of 12 knots and ensuring excellent sailing performance. S/Y Amadeus has just undergone this past winter (2018) a major refit such as total repaint top to bottom, new rigging (BSI Denmark), Novourania with new Evinrude 75hp outboard, Splash pool, new Bimini/Sprayhood/Awnings, new exterior fabrics and many other enhancements. In 2016 new “North Sails” were placed onboard. The yacht is maintained in excellent condition with a five-star crew year round. Her generous uncluttered teak deck offers plenty of space for sunbathing. The spacious and unique outdoor saloon has two tables seating upto 12 guests and is a perfect setting for outdoor dining and entertainment. Thanks to a special canopy and roll-up windows, the deck saloon has the added attraction that it can be fully enclosed, making it ideal for all weather conditions. Her forward area includes a splash pool and sun bathing area which can also be shaded with a removable awning. From the cockpit, a stairway leads to the light-filled spacious saloon offering ample seating, ideal for relaxing or enjoying a drink from the bar, and offers a formal dining area. This area also includes a LCD TV, entertainment center, ipod dock station, playstation, and is ideal for indoor activities. She can accommodate 10-12 guests in one full width master stateroom, two double bedded cabins each having one extra single bed and two twin bedded cabins which can be easily converted to double beds (upon request), thus, making her the only 5 double bedded sailboat in the Greek market. She also has a nice selection of toys which include water ski (adult and children), tubes, inflatable canoes, wakeboard, fishing rod and snorkeling gear.

3 hospitalized after knife attack on party boat in New York City along Brooklyn waterfront

NEW YORK (AP) — A knife attack on a crowded party boat at a New York City pier Saturday resulted in the hospitalization of three people, police said.

A 911 call came in around 5 p.m. reporting the assault along the Brooklyn waterfront near 58th Street and the Brooklyn Army Terminal warehouse, NYPD Detective Sophia Mason said.

The victims were said to be a 32-year-old man with a stab wound to the torso, a 40-year-old man with stab wounds to the chest and abdomen and a 28-year-old man who was hit in the head with a bottle. They were taken to the NYU Langone Hospital and were in stable condition, Mason said.

Two more people were treated for injuries at the scene, but they declined further medical treatment, according to the fire department.

There were no arrests as of Saturday evening and the investigation was ongoing.

Around 3,000 people were aboard the vessel, the Cornucopia Majesty, at the time, police said. An event called BYFAROnABoat, which had advertised daytime and nighttime parties on the boat boarding at the Brooklyn Army Terminal on Saturday, said in a statement posted on social media that a “crime scene developed by the pier.” As a result, the night event was postponed.

“BYFAR Entertainment has always been a beacon of safe events in New York City and this rare occurrence has never been the norm with us,” the statement said.

The pier at the army terminal, a former military supply base that houses industrial businesses, is used by the city’s ferry service and private vessels.

Party cruises are a fixture in the waters off New York City in the warmer months, typically carrying DJs playing to large crowds as they take in views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. The city in the past has moved to restrict where and how late they can dock on the southern Brooklyn waterfront, following complaints from some area residents.
