The biggest sailing yachts to join the market in 2022

The sailing yacht market experienced a small boost in 2022 with 52 sales secured - a 24 per cent increase on last year - and more than 120 new listings, according to BOATPro. We look back on the biggest sailing yachts to join the market in 2022...

Length : 56.4m Builder : Alloy Yachts

Salvaje was delivered in 2014 as Mondango 3 and was one of the largest to leave the sheds at New Zealand-based shipyard Alloy Yachts . Her profile and naval architecture are the work of Dubois Naval Architects and she joins the market with a new set of 3Di sails and an overhaul of the engines and rigging. Highlights include a lifting keel, a climate-controlled cockpit protected by sliding glass side screens and curved glass doors, as well as a spa pool on the aft deck.

Salvaje is asking €29,500,000 with Edmiston .

Length : 55m   Builder : FNM

Elena looks deceptively classic, but she was actually launched in 2009. She is a replica of a racing schooner of the same name that took part in the 1928 King’s Cup trans-atlantic race, sailing from New York to Santander in record time. She is based on original 1910 drawings by designer Nathanael G. Herreshoff and is a tribute to the golden age of yachting. Built with racing bones, her crew has collected plenty of silverware since her launch - Elena has won Antigua Classic Week, Les Voiles de St Tropez and Monaco Classic Week.

Elena is asking €12,000,000 with Y.CO .

Length : 49m Builder : Perini Navi

Silenco was launched in 2001 as the third unit in Perini Navi 's popular 50 metre series. Not only is she a comfortable cruiser with a Christian Liaigre interior, she is also racing royalty with class wins at the Perini Navi Cup and Loro Piana regattas. Two aluminium masts stand 52 metres and 35 metres tall with custom captive reel winches and electric furlers for the genoa and staysail. Silencio was extensively refitted in 2012 and again in 2021 where she completed her 20 years ABS survey and received a new suit of sails from Evolution including a mainsail, mizzen and genoa.

Silencio is asking €13,500,000 (VAT paid) with Edmiston .

Francesco Petrarca

Length : 49.4m   Builder : Benetti

Francesco Petrarca has quite the history. Built in wood by Benetti , she started life in 1941 as a commercial ship used to transport marble from Carrara in Tuscany to Alexandria in Egypt. Some twenty years later, she was found languishing in an Egyptian port by engineer Giorgio Varvaro who set about restoring her and converting her into a yacht. She was re-rigged as a three-masted staysail schooner and enjoyed twenty more years of cruising before she changed hands in 1999 and was refitted once more.

Francesco Petrarca is asking €1,900,000 with Edmiston .

Gweilo is a two-masted schooner built in cold-molded epoxied wood and offered for sale following an extensive refit in 2022. A traditional-style rig and a long keel is the work of Gerard Dykstra and creates a comfotable ride for guests. Her interior is finished in dark panelled woods and rich fabrics with accommodation for eight.

Gweilo is asking €5,800,000 with Fraser .

Length : 45.26m     Builder : Perini Navi

Blush has enjoyed an enviable charter record on both sides of the Atlantic and has been cruising since her launch in 2007. The popular Perini Navi is offered for sale following an extension refit period to the tune of €1.8 million including her fifteen-year class survey. For owners looking to host larger groups on board, her master suite can be divided into two to create a fifth cabin. 

Blush is asking €12,495,000 with Camper & Nicholsons .

Length : 43.9m Builder : Alloy Yachts

Encore is an all-rounder. Since hitting the water at New Zealand shipyard Alloy Yachts in 2013, she has competed in many a regatta, where her carbon rig and Dubois pedigree come into their own. Equally, she is a proven world cruiser and can remain autonomous for up to six months thanks to considered freezer capacity, tankage and storage, paired with a range of 4,000 nautical miles. She is offered for sale by her original owners with low engine hours. 

Encore is asking $19,995,000 with Camper & Nicholsons .

Zaca A Te Moana

Length : 43.8m Builder : De Amstel

Zaca A Te Moana is based on a classic 1920s schooner by the name of Zaca that was famously rescued and restored post-war by actor Errol Flynn. Owner Ed Kastelein , who has a passion for restoring classic yachts, decided to commission a lookalike that was launched in 1992 with design by Oliver Van Meer and named Zaca A Te Moana. She has proven her mettle crossing the Atlantic regularly and completing the trip in as little as 10 days thanks to her powerful fore-and-aft rig that allows her to achieve 12-16 knots under sail. She can sleep 12 guests and carries a crew of 10.

Renowned for her beauty, Galactica Super Nova was developed with experts at the helm. Espen Oeino was in charge of her exterior design whilst Sinot Yacht Design crafted the interior styling. Her Rolls Royce waterjets and twin MTU diesel engines help her to achieve up to 30 knots, allowing her 12 guests to cruise the high seas at high speeds.

Secret 82.5m ( Listed for €94,500,000 )

Having undergone a refit five years after her build in 2013 the Abeking & Rasmussen motor yacht is now available for sale with Burgess. A global voyage is made possible with her range of 5,000nm and with room for 23 crew members her guests' comfort will always be ensured on such an expedition. 

O'Ptasia 85m ( Listed for €89,999,000 )

The Greek-built and designed fleet screams sophistaction and style. With ample space for up to 23 guests O'Ptasia is ideal for large gatherings. Packed with plenty of spaces in which guests can relax including a wellness centre, enormous beach club and multiple sunbathing areas O'Ptasia makes for a perfect environment to detach from the stresses of the outside world.

Victorious 85m ( Listed for €125,000,000 )

With a range of 8,000nm this explorer yacht comes with a remarkable journey of her own already under her belt. After 14 years in the making Victorious was finally launched in 2021 after her owner Vural AK set up his own shipyard in Turkey in order to complete the long awaited construction there. Her interior was designed by London-based specialists H2 Yacht Design. 

Tranquility 91.5m ( Listed for €149,900,000 )

Oceanco's exploration vessel is an appealing buy for a variety of reasons. Her stunning Eastern-inspired interior, which features a variety of exotic materials from bamboo, wenge to gold leaf. With many ammenities dedicated to relaxation Tranquility certainly lives up to her name.

Luminosity 107.6m ( POA )  

One of two 100m+megayachts for sale with Burgess, Luminosity is the newer of the builds. Italian shipyard Benetti have produced a gorgeous design that bridges together style with modern technologies. Packed with incredible features such as her dance floor, private health club and sea level spa it seems Luminosity truly has something for every type of guest.

The largest yacht for sale with Burgess, IJE is Benneti's longest ever megayacht making her the flagship of their custom fleet. If you want to zip around the lake the Alumacraft Escape 165 CS lists at $19,591 with its top-end powerplant, a 50 HP outboard with power trim and tilt. And although the Escape 165 CS is one of Alumacraft’s smaller models, it still has their 2XB twin plated bow with double thickness from the bow to amidships, a hardened center keel, and spray rails.

The Escape 165 CS is a relatively simple platform, which is ideal for angling. No surprise, then, that it has a 20-gallon livewell, a locking rod box, and twin swivel fishing seats on pedestals. Although the company doesn’t publish an MSRP this boat comes in well below our cap, and is ideal for either sailing solo or with a friend. The First 14 has a vacuum-infused hull and flies Dacron main (82.8 square foot) and jib (31.2 square foot) sails, plus a nylon gennaker (142.1 square feet). The Jet Ski SX-R is a stand-up model, which provides the ultimate in adrenaline rushes. A 1,498cc, 160-horsepower engine pushing water through a 148mm axial-flow jet pump delivers speeds up into the 60 MPH range and acceleration best described as head-snapping. With a 20-horse Mercury on the transom the Lowe FS 1625 starts at a mere $16,615 so there’s room in the budget to upgrade to a bigger powerplant and add some extras. Starting at $17,999 with a trailer included for the 13-foot base model (note that the 16-footer also comes in under our price ceiling at $20,999), the Switch has a 100-horsepower Rotax 1630 ACE waterjet powerplant, a tri-toon-like hull made from Sea-Doo’s Polytech material, and PWC-like handlebar steering at the helm station.

One of the most unusual aspects of the Switch is that you can enjoy changing deck layouts thanks to the modular design and Sea-Doo’s LinQ system. It allows you to unlock items ranging from furniture to coolers, move them to different positions on the deck, and then lock them back in place. 8. SunChaser Vista 16 LR

Pontooners who want a small, simple, easy-to-handle pontoon boat will love the SunChaser Vista 16 LR , which starts at just a hair over $20,000. The classic layout has two couches forward plus one aft and a pedestal seat at the helm, so there’s plenty of room for up to six passengers to sit or stretch out.

Despite the low barrier to entry the Vista 16 LR comes with Sea Weave flooring, blue paneling and a blue Bimini top, a five-step retractable boarding ladder, and a Torcello Lite steering wheel. Plus, there are plenty of options for customizing with features like stereo systems, ski tow-eyes, and dinette tables. Dedicated bass boats have a reputation for being expensive, but Tracker proves it doesn’t have to be that way with the Pro Team 175 TXW . Coming in under the wire at $21,995 the Pro Team 175 TXW comes rigged and ready for bass fishing competition right out of the box.

The rig includes a trailer and a standard 60-horsepower outboard that gets you speeds in the mid- to upper-30s. It’s also a garage-ready package with a swing-away tongue that requires just 20’3” for storage. Fishing features include a tournament-style elevated bowdeck, tackle organizers and tacklebox stowage compartments, and a 21-gallon livewell with a timer and divider. And unlike many stock models the standard equipment list for this one includes big-ticket items like a 12-V 45-pound thrust electric trolling motor at the bow and a fishfinder at the helm.

10. Yamaha FX HO

Boaters in search of a luxury personal watercraft with seating for up to three people may be surprised at just how affordable a top-end model can be, with the Yamaha FX HO starting at $14,299. This is a large, comfortable waterbike that tips the scales at 840 pounds and is almost 12 feet long.

Boasting a 1812CC, four cylinder, 1.8-liter High Output Yamaha four-stroke in its belly, the FX HO blasts water through a 155mm high-pressure jet to deliver speeds over 60-mph. That may be impressive performance but even more impressive is this PWC’s ability to keep you comfortable over the long haul. It has 44.5-gallons of stowage capacity for your gear, tilt steering, a beverage holder, footwell drains, and auto-trim. The FX HO is thoroughly teched-out, too, and the audio system communicates with your cell phone to make and receive phone calls (there’s a USB port for that phone inside the watertight glove box) while a five-inch touchscreen at the helm provides controls.

2022 Cruisers Yachts 34GLS

The new Cruisers Yachts 34GLS is the latest iteration of the popular GLS series from Cruisers Yachts, which persists in claiming that GLS stands for Grand Luxury Sport. But I like to think it stands for Great Little Ship. This yacht defines family fun—if you look up “family fun” in the dictionary, you’ll find a picture of the 34GLS. Well, not really, but you get the idea.

The 34GLS is aimed at day outings and occasional overnight adventures, and it has enough speed (45 mph) with twin Mercury Verado outboards to satisfy all the towed water-toy needs.

Outboards generally preclude a usable transom platform, but the 34GLS has two “wings” extending alongside the engines as well as a comfortably wide walkway forward of the outboards, with all the plumbing and connections hidden so no one will trip. Like the rest of the cockpit, the area is covered with SeaDek for a cushy nonslip surface.

Interior and Accessories

The cockpit seating is offset to allow a rear-facing seat to port, the outdoor galley console, and a settee with a back that flips to become either a companion seat or aft-facing lounge. To starboard is an L-shaped settee, also with a flipping back for facing aft or forming a sun pad when folded flat. Cruisers gets credit not just for two perfectly finished tables (standard), but also for providing dedicated stowage (in a bag for varnish protection).

The mini galley includes a sink, but be sure to order the optional grill, fridge or ice maker for serious outings, and maybe even the fridge drawer under the helm seat. A standard fiberglass hardtop covers the cockpit, and our boat had both the optional SureShade to stretch the sun protection and an opening sunroof.

The skipper gets a well-arranged throne with a bench seat (adult-plus-kid size), and a Simrad electronics package with twin 9-inch displays in an eyebrowed dash to prevent reflections.  

The bow seating is via a passage to port, with a closing windshield and wind door to protect the cockpit. This is an area where parents worry, but Cruisers made the coamings high at 33 inches. The cockpit is even deeper at about 40 inches for safety.

There’s nothing unusual forward, with wraparound seats, a pedestal table that becomes a sun pad, and a 48-quart cooler. The forward-facing seats have flip-down armrests with beverage holders. The windlass ($7,355) tucks under a flush foredeck hatch, with push-button controls at the helm and at the bow.

Going below, I was impressed by the sliding screen door and usual fiberglass door. One night of dodging no-see-ums and you’ll also appreciate them. Cruisers managed to jigsaw all the important things into the living area, with a pair of settees that convert to a 77-by-48-inch double berth using the dining table, and our test boat had the optional fridge and microwave for morning coffee. A second cabin is just aft, with a single 6-by-3-foot berth tucked athwartships—perfect for a kid or mother-in-law.

A strong selling point for the 34GLS is the enclosed head with a Dometic electric flush toilet, and a counter with a vessel sink and Euro faucet. It’s a wet head with a wraparound shower curtain, a shower wand, and an opening port to vent the steam.

Cruisers also gets points for paying attention to details, such as the fully finished lockers. Lift a hatch and you find all the plumbing carefully secured and labeled in a white-finished bilge for easy cleaning. A sump handles the shower and sink so soapy water doesn’t go into the bilge, and Cruisers doesn’t cut any corners on construction with the 34GLS. The all-fiberglass hull is reinforced with rot-free foam and glass stringers, plus numerous molded sections for monocoque strength. I was also impressed by the deep gutters in the deck hatches, which should easily handle enthusiastic washdowns or downpours without water leaking belowdecks.

Our test boat had the standard Merc 300 Verados with Joystick Piloting, but you can up the ante to 350, 400 or even 450R outboards if you have a need for speed. For the Great Lakes, the 34GLS can also be fitted with Volvo Penta or MerCruiser sterndrives up to 350 hp each, but you’d lose the immense utility room under the cockpit sole. With outboards, that cavern can handle a 5 kW Kohler diesel generator, although our 34 boasted the inverter ($6,740) that can power the air conditioning ($6,235) for up to six hours.

The 34GLS has hydraulic trim tabs as standard, but the boat came up flat and fast during our test without needing a nudge from the tabs to get onto plane. Because we ran flat at speed, I suspect the tabs are there to balance the boat when Aunt Edna parks to one side.

The bottom was designed by Ocean Five naval architects, a growing force in production boats, and it sliced neatly through wakes and chop with its 21-degree transom deadrise without throwing spray everywhere. The 34GLS is fun to drive too, and the skipper is going to have people lined up saying, “My turn, my turn!”

If you’re looking around, check out the Scout 350LXZ ($551,000), which is a foot shorter but offers triple outboards.

Whether you’re entertaining a bunch of friends or getting away for a lazy weekend, the Cruisers 34GLS fulfills the promise of grand luxury sport; even better, it’s also a great little ship.

Where do you go if you are 20 points behind in polls and no safe seats are safe seats any more?

Today, Rishi Sunak found himself in the absolutely stunning North Devon village of Clovelly.

A privately owned village which charges you £10 to enter, it is very Tory territory.

It's in the consistency being contested by Sir Geoffrey Cox, the former attorney general who has been an MP for 20 years. 

The prime minister bobbed out to sea with the rumbustious Sir Geoffrey in a small fishing vessel, not to catch some fish but voters.

His focus on fishermen and farmers in the South West comes with the claim Labour will tax them more and not take advantage of Brexit opportunities - something the opposition deny. 

Back on land, there were donkeys, cream teas and lobster lunches, but few interactions with local voters.

There simply weren't many, mostly bemused German tourists and Conservative supporters.

Today is an example of this conservative, Conservative campaign, a sign they are trying to hold on to traditional seats with traditional voters.

Some might say the PM's campaign is somewhat beached.

A former Brexit Party candidate is running for Reform UK under a different name, following accusations of Islamophobia in 2019.

Dionne Moore Cocozza is now running in Glasgow West as Dionne Moore, using her middle name as a surname. No details on Reform UK's website link the candidate to the 2019 race.

The Reform UK candidate previously stood for the Brexit Party, later rebranded as Reform UK, in Glasgow North under the name Dionne Cocozza, receiving 320 votes.

Ms Cocozza's candidacy in the 2019 election drew attention after the University of Glasgow's student newspaper and Hope Not Hate reported on her social media use.

At the time, she wrote on social media that Muslims wanted to institute Sharia law in a post viewed by Sky News.

According to the anti-racism advocacy group Hope Not Hate, Ms Cocozza has also said on social media "you can't say anything if you're white", and accused Labour's shadow minister David Lammy of stoking racism with "anti-white tweets".

She also shared a post written by another user, viewed by Sky News, which made the claim, "I heard a muslim say, we get elected then slowly we takeover".

Sky News was unable to find any other instances in which Ms Cocozza has opted to use the name "Dionne Moore" in public, and she has not drawn attention to her candidacy on social media.

Reform UK's regional manager for Scotland, Martyn Greene, confirmed the candidate is the same person who ran in 2019.

The party has said it is consulting lawyers about suing the company it paid £144,000 to vet candidates.

Chairman Richard Tice said the firm, Vetting.com, "promised a deep dive, particularly on social media", but has "delivered absolutely nothing".

However, Reform UK does not believe the vast majority of candidates who have been singled-out by the media for things they have said on social media have done anything wrong.

Specialist, associate specialist, and speciality (SAS) doctors in England have voted in favour of a new pay deal from the government.

The British Medical Association (BMA) said 79.3% of members who took part in the ballot backed the new package.

It means SAS doctors on open contracts could see pay increases of between 9.5% and 19.4% compared with 2022/23.

It also includes a consolidated uplift of £1,400 to each pay point for SAS doctors on closed contracts.

This is on top of the 6% increase awarded by the Doctors' and Dentists' Review Body (DDRB) in 2023/24.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is out on the campaign trail today, and he was asked about Boris Johnson's involvement in the Conservative election efforts.

The former prime minister has been drafted in by the Conservatives, reportedly to help counter the growing threat from Reform UK.

It is thought he has signed thousands of letters due to be delivered to voters this week, as well as recording campaign videos for a number of his Tory MP allies.

All this, it seems, done from the sunny beaches of Sardinia ( see 9.40 post ).

Asked whether he is disappointed Mr Johnson isn't actively campaigning, Mr Sunak said these videos and letters "have been co-ordinated by the campaign".

He added: "It's great that Boris is supporting the Conservative Party. I very much welcome that. 

"He's endorsing many candidates in videos and letters which have been co-ordinated by the campaign. 

"I know that will make a difference. And of course, every week he's making the case in his column and making sure everyone understands that what a Labour government would do to this country and why it's important everyone votes Conservative. 

"I'm glad he's doing that."

We've just been hearing from Sir Keir Starmer, who is in Basingstoke today as Labour continue their week of campaigning focused on the economy.

First, he is asked about the issue of illegal immigration, which the Labour leader says is a "real test of government".

Sir Keir says: "We have to stop this vile trade of the gangs that are putting vulnerable people into boats to cross that Channel.

"The only way to stop that is to smash those gangs, and that is why we will set up our Border Security Command. This will be a new command, with new powers."

But what about beer, Sir Keir?

He is then asked whether Labour would continue a freeze on beer duty.

Sir Keir says this is part of Labour's "package" to support hospitality.

He adds: "It is part of the challenge for small businesses, whether it's hospitality, whether it's retail… and that's why I'm really pleased today to be unveiling our plan for supporting small businesses."

More people in the UK think immigration has a negative impact on society compared to a positive one, according to a new survey carried out by YouGov exclusively for Sky News. 

Across the UK, 43% of people asked thought that immigration has a negative impact on British society, compared to 35% who said it has a positive impact.

While the results varied according to location, only in London and in Scotland were people more likely to say that immigration has a positive impact.

And there were clear divides between age groups: 54% of 18 to 24-year-olds think immigration has a positive effect. But among those aged 65 and up, 58% think the impact of immigration on society is negative.

There was a more mixed view on the economic benefits of immigration, with the results pretty even: 39% of respondents thought immigration has a positive impact on the economy, with 37% saying the impact was negative.

But the poll identified a clear gender split, with only 34% of women saying that immigration has had a positive economic impact, compared with 43% of men.

Respondents also thought that cutting immigration would have a negative impact on the NHS, hospitality, universities and social care, but a positive effect on housing.

The survey also revealed deep political distrust among the public, with 52% saying they think Labour are not telling the truth about what they think on immigration, and 49% saying the same thing about the Conservatives. Every region and demographic distrusted the main two parties on this point.

And people by a large margin believed that governments - from whatever party - could cut immigration if they really wanted but that it would have negative consequences they don't want to face.

Reform UKis the only party people think are telling the truth on immigration: 60% agreed that the party was saying what it genuinely thought.

Nor do people trust the main two parties to follow through on their promises. People thought that immigration would increase under both a Labour and a Conservative government - despite believing that their policies aim to reduce it.

People overwhelmingly think war, poverty, and gangs are mainly responsible for increases in immigration - compared to just 1% who think climate change is the main cause, or 4% who think Brexit is.

Scottish Labour is against the two-child benefit cap, Anas Sarwar has said, despite there being no plans to scrap the measure if Labour wins the keys to Downing Street.

Asked by a journalist if he was against the cap - which only allows families to claim benefits for two children - Mr Sarwar said: "The short answer is yes.

"We were right to oppose the two-child limit, we were right to vote against the two-child limit."

But he added: "The honest reality is after 14 years of Tory economic carnage, we will not be able to do everything we want to do as fast as we want to do."
