And, pushing the throttles all the way home, M30 reaches an impressive 30 knot top speed, making her suitable for short getaways, long-haul adventure, or anything in between.

Custom configurable interior spaces are designed to comfortably accommodate two owners plus four guests and a crew of four, with ample space for provisions and gear. Metal Shark’s panoramic window treatment allows for dramatic views and an open, airy atmosphere, far removed from the walled-in isolation of traditional yachts.

The BlackCat 30 concept is a very stlish 30m Catamaran, designed by Malcolm McKeon for the brand BlackCat Superyachts with interior styling by m2atelier. The builder will be experienced multihull shipyard McConaghy Boats. The yacht is capable to reach a cruising speed of 20 knots with a top speed of 30 knots.

Villa X30 the New 30 Meter Catamaran by Extra Is Born

The Extra Villa offers the unrivalled livability of a home combining innovative architectural features in an open plan, multi-level layout, with the efficiency of a catamaran platform. Casual living was the mindset behind this project providing owners and guests with a more laid back experience and a new definition of enjoyment on the water.

X30 Villa marks the expansion of Extra into the luxury catamaran market. A dynamic synergy where automotive meets architecture. The exterior styling unmistakably imbues Extra Yacht’s DNA with its notable usage of panoramic glass, large social areas, and open concept stern facilitating easier sea access.

This new catamaran, with a quieter electric motorisation, takes advantage of a hybrid propulsion system that significantly reduces C02 emissions. Consumption efficiency is augmented by glass impregnated solar cells that produce additional energy for on-board utilities. Sustainable or natural materials such as re-purposed fibres, sustainably assessed paints and plasters, alternative leathers and reclaimed woods will be considered without compromising quality or finish.

30 Meter luxury Catamaran

X30 Villa is endowed with a beamy aft cockpit that can be configured in any manner with loose furniture. In addition, this area is protected by a glass balustrade so as to not impede the view. The multifunctional high/low platform supports a 5+ metre tender and all the water toys. Also, it can be aligned with the swim platforms to create a much larger beach area. The current layout offers VIP cabins with direct access to the transom in order to enjoy the sea without having to traverse the interior. Villa continues on the Extra’s beach club approach of facilitating aft-ward views with direct connection to the sea.

X30 Villa boasts a main deck with extra high ceilings and large panoramic windows intended to maximize outdoor views while letting natural sunlight indoors. The layout is subdivided into smaller convivial multi-level zones to break up the space.

One option includes the main salon, library nook, bar and galley casually flowing into each other as part of the same open plan area overlooked by the raised wheelhouse and observatory. Other proposals show the galley below deck or a separate kitchen on the main deck.

Creative architectural detailing, like the aft salon ceiling outstretching to the exterior, conveys a sense of a much larger social area when the doors are open. To further amplify the indoor feel of the aft cockpit, loose furnishings and accessories were chosen.

A combination of urban architectural features and earthy materials blends with a softer visual language. Meandering walls flow seamlessly into mullions and are finished in textured plaster. Accent panels of polished concrete are complemented by stone window ledges while contrasted by mat metal accents and walnut cabinetry. The overhead skylights flood natural light onto desaturated oak parquet, with the integration of rugs and faux concrete cladding for a warm yet industrial look.

The owner’s cabin was conceived as a private destination where time can be spent in the most idyllic setting. This dynamic oasis features a relaxation area with sofas and an accommodation area area positioned in the center, while the SPA bathroom is on a lower level and has been split to port and starboard.

Nestled forward between the two hulls, the master stateroom terrace overlooking the sea may be lowered in calm waters to offer exceptional views while retaining maximum privacy. With the terrace in dropped-down position, the glass doors close it off to provide protection from wind and bad weather. When closed, the master cabin maintains its seaworthiness and offers protection and sound damping thanks to its inherent design.

Sam Fortescue reveals the latest multihulls to make a splash and takes a look at what’s on the designers’ drawing boards

Sunreef 43m Eco

LOA 42.7m Beam 15.4m Power 2 x 200kW Passengers 12 guests, 7 crew

Polish catamaran builder Sunreef has just sold another 43M Eco – the second largest sailing cat in the world. This is hull No 2, and will feature the same innovative 60kW solar array as the first example. Solar cells are integrated into every surface of the hull, superstructure and rig to give it impressive range under electric propulsion and almost limitless power for domestic comfort. The boat has an invisible drop-down aft garage for toys, fold-down wings on the quarter and a vast beach club, which combine to form what Sunreef has dubbed the Ocean Lounge. A gym with a view is built into the starboard quarter, and there’s a huge flybridge and room for 12 guests below. 

BlackCat 36m

LOA 36m Beam 13.7m Draught 1.60-4.90m Passengers 8 guests, 4 crew

Designer Malcolm McKeon and BlackCat founder Mitch Booth have been busy creating a super-sleek new 36-metre catamaran concept for a specific owner, and are now offering it alongside its other models in the 30- to 50-metre range. There’s barely a straight line on board; everything is curved and ergonomic – what Italian design is to furniture, so BlackCat is to catamarans. Compared to other BlackCats, there is perhaps a little extra height in the superstructure, plus solar panels and drop-down bulwarks aft. Naturally, it is a full-carbon build with performance to match – this one is predicted to sail at up to 30 knots, setting 650 square metres of carbon sails on its 45-metre rotating mast. Retractable rudders and daggerboards promise tight wind angles and upwind speed as well as access to shallow waters. Electric propulsion and up to 50kW regeneration capacity will minimise fuel burn. There are four double cabins for eight guests. The boat would be built at Baltic Yachts with BlackCat consulting. 

Echo Yachts 56m

LOA 56m Beam 15.5m Passengers 16 guests, 14 crew

Echo Yachts has come up with a beast of a catamaran design that blurs the line between support mothership and boat. This 56-metre is designed around helicopter operations, with two landing spots and room for two aircraft in the hangar. That gives it the capacity to carry three helicopters, as well as a range of large tenders up to around 11 metres and numerous other toys. Not that guest-level comfort has been neglected: there’s a spa pool on the foredeck, a private aft deck lounge and a huge beach club based around the drop-down platform. The interior is 100 per cent customisable, and can be skewed towards crew accommodation or even scientific, humanitarian or special interest facilities.

Alva Yachts Ocean Eco 90 H2

LOA 27.5m Beam 13.98m Draught 1.2m Power 2 x 250kW

Alva Yachts is building the world’s first 27.5-metre fossil-fuel-free catamaran. The Ocean Eco 90 H2 will run off two electric motors connected to a 500kWh-plus battery pack, powered by the sun via 200 square metres of solar panelling. It will also be fitted with Ayro’s Oceanwings with sensors on the wingsails. Wind data will be analysed by a computer that will adjust the wingsails’ angle of attack and camber. “This project would not be possible without our classification partner DNV, which has established new ground rules because this has never been done before,” says Holger Henn, CEO of the German builder. 

McConaghy MC115

LOA 35m Beam 12.5m Draught 1.8m (centreboards up)

Composite wizard McConaghy has given us an exclusive preview of a new 35-metre catamaran that is still at the design stage. Intended to bridge the gap between production and superyacht sectors, it is even more customisable than the yard’s smaller models. It features wide side decks and an open flybridge with an enclosed helm station forward, at the mast foot.

With sail controls concentrated above, the main deck is devoted to socialising, with a huge hydraulic bathing platform aft. The master suite is positioned forward on the main deck, giving it access to a foredeck lounge with a spa pool – a departure for this performance-focused brand. Accommodation is for 12 guests in six cabins, supported by a crew of four. But the precise configuration is infinitely adaptable. This should be a rapid boat, courtesy of slick naval architecture by Ker and a high-tech composite build. “The MC115 is a wind-speed yacht, and with true wind speed of 20 knots and the boat at 100 degrees, she will comfortably achieve 21 knots,” says managing director Mark Evans. 

LOA 36.75m Beam 13.85m Draught 2m Power 2 x 340hp e-motors

Flagships on this scale don’t come quickly, and especially not when they keep growing. What began as a 30-metre now surpasses 36 metres, with its electric drives and helicopter landing pad covered with retractable solar panels. To keep us hooked as the 2024 launch date draws closer, Silent Yachts has released details of a specially adapted submersible and quadcopter designed to match the yacht. U-Boat Worx is behind the two-person Nemo sub, which can dive to 100 metres. And the aircraft is an adaptation of VRCO’s XP4, due for regulatory approval in 2024. Billed as the “supercar of the skies”, it has vertical take off and landing capabilities and room for four passengers. Both are electric and will be recharged from the Silent 120’s vast battery bank. 

WiderCat 92

As we reported back in November, Wider has sold five of its 28-metre WiderCats so far, and the first hulls have now left the moulds in Ancona. Late on a midwinter’s night, the two halves of the boat were transported 20 kilometres by road at painstaking speed to Wider’s new building halls at Fano. They will first be joined, then united with the deck and superstructure, which are already moulded. Painting comes next, followed by the complex systems that lie behind this advanced diesel-electric hybrid. The build is on track to debut at Cannes in September. 

Lazzara LPC 85

LOA 25.9m Beam 10.6m Power 2 x 550 - 1,800hp Top speed 20 knots Passengers 10 guests, 5 crew

Following the delivery of its UHV 87 model, shown at Cannes in 2022, and the launch of an express cruiser in its LSX series, Lazzara Yachts is expanding its offering with a catamaran line. The flagship 26-metre cat, built in GRP, will house a giant saloon that occupies the entire main deck – with the focus entirely on entertainment. The owner’s suite is a marvel – filling the 10-metre beam of the lower deck, with fold-down balconies on either side. Four more guest doubles have been designed with semi-open bathrooms, to transmit the light from the hull windows. Outside space is epic, with a vast beach club, elegant main deck dining and an expansive flybridge with a spa pool. While impressively styled, these are production yachts, with choices very much circumscribed. 

VisionF 100

LOA 30.5m Beam 12m Power 4 x Volvo Penta IPS 1050 3,200hp Top speed 22 knots

In just four years of operation, Turkish yard VisionF has already launched several 24-metre aluminium catamarans, and now it has sold a 30.5-metre cat. Built entirely in robust Kevlar composite, it should be incredibly stiff and strong. But relaxing is the name of the game here. There’s a glass-bottomed pool on the foredeck, fold-down wing balconies and a large, open flybridge. At the stern is deep hydraulic platform designed so that it either massively extends the aft deck or provides a huge beach club area. Besides the 100-square-metre saloon there is room on the main deck for a large forward-facing owner’s cabin. Up to six comfortable en suite cabins can be fitted into the two hulls. Delivery is scheduled for 2025. 

Lagoon Seventy 7

LOA 23.25m Beam 11m Power 2 x 175hp diesel Passengers up to 10 guests + 2 crew

While Lagoon is better known for its smaller sailing cats, its Seventy 7 is a semi-custom exception with more of a superyacht mentality. And its latest commission is an intriguing mix of sailing and gaming. Currently in build, the boat has an elegant dedicated cinema in the starboard hull with 7.1 surround sound and a pull-down screen integrated into the headlining. Another owner request was that the LED-lit gaming tower should be made a feature of the boat, and so it is – placed by the stairs so the lights can be seen from the cockpit. Next to the cinema is a workshop, where the owner can work on his drones.

Even without customisation, the Seventy 7 is a spacious, capable cruising cat. There’s the option of a spa pool on its flybridge, which also offers informal dining, an L-shaped sofa, a grill and a fridge. The helm station naturally lies at the forward end of this space, where all the lines come back to a battery of hefty winches. The foredeck lounge has direct access inside via a sea-tight door. And uniquely, the master cabin has a balcony door with a built-in bathing ladder for direct access to the water. Grey D4 Vectran sails from Incidence complement a dark grey hull, while the interior plays on primary colours. 

Art Explorer

The build of the groundbreaking 46-metre Art Explorer catamaran is continuing apace at The Italian Sea Group , with delivery expected in September. “She will be one of the largest luxury catamarans in the world when she is delivered, a testament to the vision, energy and leadership of its protagonist, Frederic Jousset,” says Laurent Bredy, head of project management for Fraser, of the yacht’s French owner. It was designed by Axel de Beaufort and Guillaume Verdier, with carbon mast and boom by Lorima. She will act as a floating gallery that will sail around the world, taking art to people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to it. 

Fountaine Pajot 80

LOA 23.98m Beam 11.09m Power 2 x 175hp Passengers 12 guests, 5 crew

Building a 24-metre was a big step up for French production yard Fountaine Pajot , so it has sought naval architect Olivier Racoupeau ’s help to add some big-boat sparkle. He’s brought ideas such as drop-down bulwarks that create a port and starboard lounging area at anchor, a spa pool set into the bow, where you can bathe and admire the waves sliding by, a well-equipped flybridge and epic toy storage. The overhangs are set with semi-transparent solar cells and the interior by Isabelle Racoupeau is about unostentatious luxury. There’s also room for up to six double cabins.

LOA 26.82m Beam 11.1m Power 2 x 170hp Yanmar Passengers 10 guests, 4 crew

Speed has always been the essence of HH Catamarans, but a new flagship is hoping to inject a bigger dose of comfort into these carbon-fibre fliers. Choose between a sleek flybridge or the racy pod helm stations that barely protrude above the coachroof. Up to 10 guests are supported by four crew, making charter an option. A new flagship is on the drawing board at Franco-Italian builder Prestige, which has found a niche in high-quality series production. The 20-metre M8 power cat is said to have lower fuel consumption thanks to efficient design, and a 15-knot cruising speed. A full-beam owner’s cabin forms a lower half-deck forward, with space for up to four further guest cabins. A vast saloon with extensive glazing and stainless-steel detailing gives the feeling of a sophisticated apartment. There’s also a flybridge and a foredeck lounge. It should be at Cannes this year. 

Reinvigorated under French ownership, Gunboat has just unveiled a flexible new 21-metre model. The spec can be varied on a scale that runs from fast cruiser to seat-of-the-pants rocket ship, with two rig choices. The mast has been moved aft for a bigger self-tacking J2 sail and a high-aspect main. There’s no flybridge – just an aerodynamic coachroof that has been enlarged to take more solar panels. The saloon is bigger too, and the accommodation is flexible. 

Nemesis 60ft

The team behind the outrageous 101-metre Nemesis One foiling catamaran concept have somehow raised the stakes a notch or two further with a design that will hit 150 knots. This will be a 20-metre power boat on hydrofoils, capable of accommodating six guests and three crew. Initial drawings resemble something out of Star Wars – all stealth angles in jet black. The contract is already in place for the design and build, according to Nemesis.

Bluegame's first ever multihull offering was revealed to the world at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2022. The 22.7-metre design retains the appearance of a monohull with the benefits of a catamaran – stability, volume and improved fuel consumption. Its hull form means the BGM75 requires 50 per cent less power than a monohull of the same volume, while generating 5kW of green energy thanks to 56 solar panels that can be installed on the deckhouse. Design comes from Bernardo Zuccon and Piero Lisson, working on a hull form that was developed as the hydrogen-powered chase boat for the America’s Cup.

Large-sized catamarans are appealing due to their ample spacing and comfort. Therefore, a cruising family or couple looking to buy a boat is more likely to go for one of these. But are there small cruising catamarans that provide the performance, comfort, and amenities found in larger boats?  

The best catamarans under 30 feet (9.14 m) include the TomCat 6.2, Cadillac 27and 30, Gemini 30, Endeavour 30, and Maine Cat. These time-tested cruising cats are easy to handle, premium built, and are great for daytime sailing, overnight trips, and some even suitable for long-range sea passages. 

In this article, you’ll find a list of the best cruising catamarans below 30 feet (9.14 m). Keep reading to discover which catamarans make this list, what they have to offer, their pros and cons, and how much they cost.

Unlike most catamarans designed for racing purposes, the TomCat 6.2 is a medium-sized cat that’s well-suited to daytime cruising. It boasts high-quality construction, vacuum-bagged hulls, and a plywood-reinforced deck.

This 20 footer (6.09 m) comes with an 11-foot (3.35 m) beam and not only offers you safety and comfort but performance and versatility as well. 

This boat has a centrally placed outboard engine and two rudders that allow it to turn quickly and maneuver confidently into and out of marina slips. The 9.9 hp outboard propels it to speeds of around 8 knots (9.21 mph or 14.8 kph), though the boat has the potential to move faster if desired.

This simpler type of cat (just one engine as an example) also allows for cheaper and easier maintenance. Maintenance costs are something most people underestimate when getting a cat, if you want to get some real numbers from actual sailors then I suggest you read this article (How much does it cost to maintain a cat).

The boat sails with minimal heeling, comfortably accommodate 6-8 people, and you can sail it single-handed or take a crew. 

High and narrow hulls bearing arched bottoms allow for a low wetted surface. The hull design provides low resistance and a great deal of reserved buoyancy and also enables you to drive through closely spaced waves.

On most 20-footers (6.1 m), driving through waves generates a smooth but wet ride, but with the TomCat’s enclosed deck (link to parts names explained here ), you are safe and protected behind a windshield and the high bulwark.

The TomCat makes an excellent cruiser because it performs impressively well both under sail and power. It combines the performance of a modern sailing cat with the comfort, style, and convenience of a powerboat. It’s also trailerable since you can detach the hulls from the deck , winch up the deck on a trailer, and slide the hulls underneath.

But the best part is that it’s easy on the pocket, with the price ranging between $36,750 and $44,580 .

Catalac 30 (9M)

The Catalac brand consists of strongly built vessels that sport thick hulls, glass windows, narrow beams, and vertical transoms . Catalac 30 was the first vessel in this popular British cruising line designed by Tom Lack in the late 60s. The boat’s appeal was attributed to its safety, ample spacing, well-built interior, and load-carrying abilities.

These characteristics are extremely important on a safe catamaran, overloading your cat makes it sit lower in the water, increases drag, reduces handling and speed, there is stuff you should know about this (so that you can make an educated buy). Sporting 5 berths, a massive galley, plus a cockpit with a sheltered steering position, the 30-foot (9.1 m) Catalac makes an excellent floating home for a cruising family. It sails exceptionally well, doesn’t heel ( heeling explained here ), and delivers a reasonable motor-sailer level of performance.

Furthermore, the hulls provide adequate headroom, allowing those on board to move around comfortably, and there’s enough space on the deck for sunbathing.

The Catalac’s structure features solid fiberglass, chined hulls, and a staggered sheerline that allows easy aft access. With a modest rig that’s easy to handle, the Catalac can deliver top speeds of up to 12-14 knots (13.81-16.11 mph / 22.22-25.9 kph) under sail.

Given that the boat’s design focuses more on comfort than speed, this is a spectacular performance.  

Catalac 9M requires a skilled hand when turning into the wind as it is prone to blowing sideways. This is because the boat lacks ballast (which helps in keeping momentum during a tack) but also centerboards ( explained here ).

Back to the boat! This model came in two versions; the standard layout contained a 30-40hp outboard, while the second option had duo engines. The latter is easier to maneuver into a marina.

These cats retain their value pretty well. However, they might not be easy to come by since most owners find it challenging to get their hands on a larger boat with similar qualities and performance.

A Catalac 30 (9M) goes for between $33,000 and $55,000.

Catalac 27 (8M)

The Catalac 27 8M is a pocket cruiser that boasts a strong reputation for high quality, durability, and strength. Besides, the boat’s design makes it somewhat suitable for bluewater sailing ( understand why the small size is an offshore problem).

Built like a battleship, the boat contains solid fiberglass hulls. Additionally, it comes with double engines, a large cockpit fitted with cushions all around, and features standing headroom in each hull.

Like the Catalac 9M, this boat comes with two different layouts; a twin inboard diesel engine or an outboard engine. The twin-engine models can motor up to 1000 km (621 miles, read more on cat fuel consumption here ) without needing to refuel, while the 70 amps of charge plus water tanks (70 gallons / 265 liters) make these vessels remarkable coastal cruisers. 

Catalacs equipped with outboard engines sail faster since you can raise the engine during sailing and are also lighter. This helps to minimize drag . Catalac 8M sports a short but thick mast that helps make the boat stable.

Though small in size, this catamaran packs a lot of features in its small frame. It has a full-sized berth, a large galley that’s almost 8 feet (2.4 m) long, a quarter berth, head, and navigation station.

What’s more, the cockpit is as large as that of a 38 to 40-foot (11.5 to 12.1 m) cat.

Catalac 27 costs about $31,836.

The Endeavour 30 

The Endeavour 30 catamaran is a boat characterized by stability, ample deck space, and a spacious interior. It boasts fast cruising speeds under both sail and power.

The boat has mini keels and rudders plus symmetrical hulls separated by a hydra-cell. The latter is a center section with a characteristic V-shape. 

The boat’s vacuum-bagged construction helps enhance strength and stiffness while reducing weight. Furthermore, the interior has a fiberglass mold, providing extra strength and rigidity. With sufficient breeze, this vessel can deliver reasonable off-the-wind and doable upwind speeds.

As such, you can expect to attain speeds of about ~10 knots (11.51 mph or 18.5 kph) on power reaches. Below is a video showing a panoramic tour of the Endeavour 30:

This vessel has the internal capacity of a 40-foot (12.1 m) monohull. And you can tell this from the unique layout merging the cabin and cockpit with wide doors to the numerous features packed into this 30-foot (9.14 m) vessel.

It has a spacious salon, an enormous galley, two queen berth staterooms with plenty of storage space, a head with separate showers, and a sizable U-shaped dinette.

The Geminis by Tony Smith were the United States’s first production cruising cats. Today, these vessels remain the most appealing American-built cruising catamarans. Built between 1981 and 1990, the Gemini 30 does not have a contemporary design, but it works remarkably well for cruisers desiring generous living space in a small affordable sailboat.

At only 14 feet (4.2 m) across, Gemini cats are somewhat narrow. But this mean s they can easily fit into most of the regular marina berths.

Besides, the boats still contain enough interior space for a queen-size double berth and two smaller doubles housed in separate guest rooms.

There’s also a modest but serviceable saloon with duo settees and a collapsible table that can transform into an additional double berth.

For the Gemini 30, this translates to a cruising cat with standing headroom that can comfortably accommodate 3 couples in private cabins or a family with small children. A good-sized galley, a spacious head with a shower, nav desk, and a large comfy cockpit make up the Gemini 30’s cruising palace.

While not that fast, the Gemini 30 will easily outsail the Endeavor 30 discussed above. Its daggerboards (which are explained in detail here ) can point well, and if you keep it light, it can do 7-8 knots (12.9-14.8 km/hr) under sail.

Besides, raising the daggerboards reduces the wetted surface area, and increases the speed downwind.

The Gemini 30 tends to pound and hobbyhorse a little when sailing in choppy waters – particularly when overloaded (more on load carrying capabilities in this article ), but the deep pivoting daggerboards provide stability and lift underwater.

Furthermore, the Gemini’s retractable rudders enable it to venture into shallow waters.

This is a very popular cruising cat that’ll give you a lot of bang for your bucks.

Maine Cat 30 

The Maine Cat 30 combines premium quality construction materials with the most advanced building techniques to create a lightweight vessel capable of handling most offshore conditions. What’s more, this boat can remain trouble-free for years on end with little effort.

If you are in the market for a simple liveaboard cruiser that you can use for a short weekend getaway or a cruising voyage, this is it.

The boat has a sizable primary stateroom berth with ample overhead space and a dresser fitted with a hanging storage cabinet. The enormous head includes a toilet, sink, 20-gallon (75.71 L) holding tank, vanity, and a pressurized shower.

Covering the open bridgedeck is a permanent hardtop. This spacious bridgedeck can hold quite a crowd and comes with a convertible dinette that turns into an extra berth. If need be, you can even enclose the entire space using acrylic windows or screens. Gabo

The 360-degree visibility from the cockpit allows the captain plus the crew a panoramic view, and all sail controls go back to the cockpit, which is very useful if wanting to sail single-handedly.

I believe that most boats should be set up in this way since sooner or later you might be in a situation where there is only one person to handle the controls, such as in an emergency. But more on that in another article ( Link ).

The Maine Cat 30 is a classic boat that delivers on high-performance multihull sailing. Designed to offer much better performance than catamarans bearing tall and heavy bridge decks, this cat weighs less and suffers less windage thanks to the acrylic windows.

The boat’s interior layout allows for easy cleaning as surfaces sport a smooth gel coat and satin-finished cherry trim. The solid but lightweight furniture bears the same Core-Cell foam core employed on the hull, deck, and hardtop. Plus, there’s ample storage for all your sailing equipment, cleaning supplies, and provisions.

A Maine Cat 30 can cost up to $110,000.

Heavenly Twins 27

The overall design of this well-equipped catamaran makes it a superb pocket cruiser.

Heavenly Twins 27 manages to fit not one but two coachroofs on hulls that are only 27 feet (8.20 m) long. Canoe sterns and a central cockpit separating the duo coachroofs form the boat’s other prominent features. 

Famous for their excellent build quality, medium-depth draft, and narrow beams, Heavenly Twins 27 appeals to a wide range of boating enthusiasts.

These include solo sailors, weekend sailors, cruising families, circumnavigators, beginner sailors, and experienced liveaboards such as this famous Youtube channel “Kittiwake”.

The vessels house double cabins in the hulls while the forward starboard contains the heads and, to port, the galley. You can easily access the bar from the well-protected cockpit while the Comfordesk accommodation converts into a double dock. 

A stoop through allows access from below-deck to the aft compartment without going through the cockpit. There’s ample storage space throughout the boat, plus you can section off the large stateroom into smaller double compartments if desired.

The price range for this boat is $ 20,098 to $24,193. (I believe that kittiwake is for sale too)

The last cruising catamaran on my list is the Aquilon 26 . This French-built cruising vessel is light in weight and trailerable, which means you can disassemble it in a few hours or transport it as-is.

Designing a boat that is possible to disassemble usually means that it is structurally less strong, which by no means is a problem during coastal sailing but the Aquilon 26 is mostly attractive to sailors who prefer inland lake sailing. It’s also suitable for beginner sailors.

Although there are no real “beginner cats” there are specs to consider if you are a beginner with catamarans, most of them I have listed in another article ( here ). Gabo

This 26-footer (7.92 m) has the potential for good speed though its layout is anything but conventional- which forms part of its appeal.

The cockpit works as the saloon, and a full bimini protects the crew from lousy weather. The starboard hull contains a dinette and galley, and the port has a double berth stateroom. The windows are quite unusual, but they provide lots of light, remarkably enhancing interior visibility.

Aquilon 26 can deliver an average cruising speed of 10knots (11.51 mph or 18.5 kph).

On a beam reach, you can expect around 25 knots (28.77 mph or 46.3 kph) with an adequate breeze ( I have never sailed at 25knots but researching this boat supposedly it is possible).

You can get this boat for under $50,000.

What Makes Small Cruising Cats Attractive?

Small cruising cats are ideal for sailing along the coast. But that’s not all. Under capable hands, properly fitted smaller cats can also deliver spectacular offshore passages similar to their larger counterpart (Heres a list of full-sized bluewater cats).

They can operate over long cruise ranges, cross oceans , and circumnavigate the globe . Smaller cats are also suitable for day sailing, overnight trips, and coastal or inland voyages. 

For most sailors, comfort on board is crucial, so they’ll look for a vessel that guarantees a comfortable cruising experience. The good thing is that smaller vessels provide almost the same qualities and amenities that bigger vessels offer. Plus, you can do quite a bit with the available space, especially if it’s well laid out.  

You’ll find that most 30-footer (9.14 m) or more miniature cruising cats comprise a galley, head, bunks, navigation and entertainment electronics, and refrigeration.

Sailors usually talk about these benefits of smaller cats:

  • They’re less expensive. Large boats are costly to buy. They also cost more to hire, maintain, and dock. You can buy a small-sized boat at a much lower price, and parts tend to cost less too. Besides, you get to use smaller sails, winches, and lighter lines than those applicable on a larger boat. And since marine services such as moorings and haul-outs get billed via boat length, a smaller cat makes sailing more affordable.
  • They boast superior builds. Most cruising boats under 30 feet (9.14 m) feature designs that are 30+ years old. In those days, weather forecasts were hard to come by and not as accurate, so boat builders used hulls with thicker fiberglass than the type found in today’s builds. Furthermore, everything in the boat, including rigs, rudders, hulls, keels and decks, was designed to withstand strong winds and high waves. 
  • They have simpler systems. This means less time spent fixing and maintaining your boat. For instance, most small cruising cats often lack water-makers, hot water systems, or electric anchor windlasses. 
  • They’re easier to handle. Smaller cats are simpler to sail than larger cats. It’s also easier to sail one single-handed or with a small crew.

The Disadvantages of Smaller Cruising Cats

Below are some of the most discussed downsides of small cats:

  • They have limited living space, storage, and amenities.
  • Though they don’t heel much, they are less comfortable than larger boats since they get tossed around much more easily in big ocean swells.
  • It’s not easy to accommodate crew for extended periods; hence there are fewer hands to share work.
  • They are slower and take longer to get to their destination.

Though fewer are on the cruising trails than their larger counterparts, small catamarans make ideal cruisers because they are simple, seaworthy, and pocket-friendly.

When choosing the best cat for your needs, focus on quality rather than size. A well-planned 30-footer (9.14 m) is reliable and provides ample space for your accommodation, dining, and relaxation, plus a storage room for provisions and any spare parts you might need.

I - and the family - are in search of design, plans, drawings etc for a catamaran. We want to build it ourselves / have some of it made by professionals, but mostly we will build it ourselves. The size should not be less than 30 meter / in that neigborhood Obviously there must be such plans available somewhere( somebody must have been playing with the same dreams) , so instead of having plans drawn from the bottom, we hope to get inspiration from existing drawings - and possibly to use some of the drawings - in order to get easier and cheaper to the goal. Does anybody have an idea / a link etc svp

Your talking about a 94' boat--DO NOT scimp on the building plans.  
I agree - no too easy solutions here - the idea is to get the inspiration - use the design and ideas(the good ones anyway) - and of course a pro boatdesigner will do the final touch - make the drawings in "files" as well as on paper I will be grateful for any help I can get

Do you have 20 kids? Why do you need 30 meters? The registration requirements get much more stringent above 24 meters. I would contact one of the experienced NA's on this forum. I recommend Eric Sponberg, he can design something to fit your needs. http://www.sponbergyachtdesign.com/ If you can live with 22 meters? Kurt Hughes could probably stretch one of his existing designs to suit at a reasonable price. Just getting a planset made for a boat like this will cost a lot of money. I dont know how flush you are with cash but if your considering building it yourself I'd say your not rolling in it. Any particular reason why you want to build such an enormous boat? Construction cost and maintenance costs go up as well, owning a (30m) is no small financial commitment and virtually demands you use commercial haulout and maintenance facilities which is an extra cost. http://www.multihulldesigns.com

3 men suspected in disappearance of U.S. sailing couple ordered deported from St. Vincent

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent — Three men from Grenada suspected in the disappearance of a U.S. couple whose catamaran was hijacked were ordered deported from St. Vincent on Monday.

The men, Trevon Robertson, a 19-year-old unemployed man; Abita Stanislaus, a 25-year-old farmer; and Ron Mitchell, a 30-year-old sailor, had pleaded guilty to immigration charges in a court in the eastern Caribbean island of St. Vincent.

Senior Magistrate Colin John ordered that they be repatriated “as soon as practicable.”

The men had escaped from a police holding cell in Grenada on Feb. 18 and are suspected of hijacking the catamaran while Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel were aboard.

Police have said they believe  the couple were thrown overboard  as the suspects sailed to St. Vincent, where they were arrested on Feb. 21. They have not been charged in the case.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities noting there were signs of violence aboard the couple’s boat found abandoned in St. Vincent.

Last month, Robertson, Stanislaus and Mitchell were held at the South Saint George Police Station in Grenada when they escaped.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines Police Superintendent Junior Simmons has said Brandel and Hendry were likely dead.

“Based on the investigation thus far, it is presumed that Ralph Hendry and Kathy Brandel are deceased,” Simmons said in a video  statement .

Royal Grenada Police Commissioner Don McKenzie has said the three men escaped from jail before they “commandeered” the couple’s boat, called Simplicity, and headed north. The escapees boarded the boat while it was docked in the St. George area of Grenada, police said.

The nonprofit Salty Dawg Sailing Association described Hendry and Brandel as “veteran cruisers” who participated in last year’s Caribbean Rally from Hampton, Virginia, to Antigua, and had planned to spend the winter cruising in the eastern Caribbean.

FDA Clears First Over-the-Counter Continuous Glucose Monitor

Today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration cleared for marketing the first over-the-counter (OTC) continuous glucose monitor (CGM). The Dexcom Stelo Glucose Biosensor System is an integrated CGM (iCGM) intended for anyone 18 years and older who does not use insulin, such as individuals with diabetes treating their condition with oral medications, or those without diabetes who want to better understand how diet and exercise may impact blood sugar levels. Importantly, this system is not for individuals with problematic hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) as the system is not designed to alert the user to this potentially dangerous condition. 

“CGMs can be a powerful tool to help monitor blood glucose. Today’s clearance expands access to these devices by allowing individuals to purchase a CGM without the involvement of a health care provider,” said Jeff Shuren, M.D., J.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health. “Giving more individuals valuable information about their health, regardless of their access to a doctor or health insurance, is an important step forward in advancing health equity for U.S. patients.”

The Stelo Glucose Biosensor System uses a wearable sensor, paired with an application installed on a user’s smartphone or other smart device, to continuously measure, record, analyze and display glucose values in people 18 years and older that are not on insulin and who do not have problematic hypoglycemia. Users can wear each sensor up to 15 days before replacing with a new sensor. The device presents blood glucose measurements and trends every 15 minutes in the accompanying app. Users should not make medical decisions based on the device’s output without talking to their healthcare provider. 

Data from a clinical study provided to the FDA showed that the device performed similarly to other iCGMs. Adverse events reported in the study included local infection, skin irritation and pain or discomfort.

Ron Mitchell, a 30-year-old sailor; Atiba Stanislaus, a 25-year-old farmer; and Trevon Robertson, a 23-year-old unemployed man, were charged with capital murder, escaping lawful custody, housebreaking, robbery and kidnapping. Stanislaus also was charged with one count of rape, according to a statement from the Royal Grenada Police Force.

The men appeared in court on Thursday and were ordered held in prison until their hearing in late March.

They were accused of escaping from a police holding cell on Feb. 18 and hijacking a catamaran owned by Ralph Henry and Kathy Brandel while they were aboard. Authorities said they believe the couple was thrown overboard as the suspects sailed to nearby St. Vincent, where they were arrested on Feb. 21.

The three men were ordered deported from St. Vincent on Monday.

"Warm-hearted and capable" sailors

Hendry and Brandel sailed the eastern coast of the U.S., living on their yacht, "making friends with everyone they encountered, singing, dancing and laughing with friends and family," the couple's family said in a statement last week.

"We would like to say a few words about Kathy and Ralph that we wish all to know," the family said. "We live in a world that at times can be cruel, but it's also a world of profound beauty, wonder, adventure, love, compassion, caring, and faith. Our parents encompassed all those values and so much more. If we have learned anything from this tragic event, it's that we know they left this world in a better place than it was before they were born."

The Salty Dawg Sailing Association said Brandel and Hendry were "warm-hearted and capable" members and noted that Brandel served on the association's board for two years.

A GoFundMe donation page stated that Brandel had become a first-time grandmother. The page had raised over $75,000 as of Friday.

"It's just really sad," said longtime friend K.C. McAlpin, who added that Brandel and Hendry had planned to make this their "last grand trip" on Simplicity.

McAlpin said the couple always made friends easily and he hoped they would be remembered for their big hearts.

"They were just a delightful couple and a real blessing in my life, and the lives of so many other people," he said.
