Onboard, a walkway protected by high bulwarks gives access to all areas. Forward, the large bow sundeck can be converted into a chaise lounge come cocktail hour. Amidships, the spacious dinette is equipped with folding tables that can be set up for dinner parties or tucked away when not in use. You can also opt to add two collapsible side terraces to this deck to create more space and connection to the sea.

To the aft, the teak-covered swim platform can be fitted with a hydraulic system that helps with launching tenders and toys. Speaking of which, the garage is big enough to hold a tender of nearly seven feet. Also at the rear lie a pair of 440 hp Volvo Penta D6 sterndrive engines.

Inside, meanwhile, the open-plan living area sports rotating U-shaped sofas that can transform into a comfy double bed on demand. To the aft is a cabin with separate beds and a large bathroom with a separate shower. Invictus says the generous bulwarks resulted in “remarkable internal heights,” so the interior feels light and airy.

The first unit of the new TT420 was finished in the yard’s signature “Personal White,” though both the TT420 and the TT460 will later be available in a new “Vogue White” hue. According to Invictus, this represents the yard’s ability to always deliver a unique interpretation of even a “simple” color. Hear, hear.

• What’s she like to sail?

The Moody 42 was designed for long-distance cruising, so she is solidly constructed and simply but stoutly rigged. Her high displacement and sail area/displacement ratio put her firmly in the cruiser bracket. Her displacement to waterline comparison is more favourable performance-wise than the earlier Moody 40, but still means she is stiff and well able to stand up to her sail. Her ballast ratio is not as high as some, but putting the greater part of the cast- iron ballast in a bulb at the keel foot means it is more effective.

She is easy to sail singlehanded as all the sail controls are within easy reach of the helmsman. The cockpit, however, is a long way above sea level and the genoa is large and low-cut, so visibility forward from the cockpit is severely restricted. The semi-balanced rudder keeps the helm light but positive and the half skeg increases the integrity and strength of the rudder mounting.

She is an easy and satisfying yacht to sail, so long as you’re not expecting her to be a flyer in light airs. Where she makes up for it is in her ability to keep powering on in heavy seas and to stand up to her sail plan, even when you let her become slightly over-canvassed. She also has a gentle motion at sea, making living aboard her on long passages safe, secure and comfortable.

The layout of the interior on the Moody 42

• What’s she like in port and at anchor?

Her foredeck is flat and uncluttered, and she has twin, self-stowing anchor bow rollers, which are essential if you want to weather out a gale on the hook. She also has a powerful electric windlass and a deep anchor chain locker with enough space for at least 60m (196ft) of heavy chain and a further 20m (65ft) of warp. The headsail furling drum is a foot or so above the deck, well clear of the anchor, and her slightly overhanging bow helps protect her stem when retrieving the ground tackle.

The deck area is ample and uncluttered – especially the afterdeck, where there’s room to sunbathe, shower or inflate a dinghy. Gates in the guardrails and two deep steps give good access to the water and the steps are wide enough to stand and shower on safely. She also has a deep, fold-down boarding ladder.

You won’t get more than four in the cockpit comfortably, or six if two sit behind the wheel, but below decks her saloon is roomy enough to cater for six dining or eight for a relaxing drink.

Keel design of the Moody 42

• Would she suit you and your crew?

The Moody 42 is a big boat – both in interior volume and displacement terms. She’s equally suited to coastal family cruising or more ambitious blue water work. She’s very comfortable to live on, both under way and at anchor, and there’s enough room for all the long-term cruising essentials such as a generator, inverter, watermaker, hot water tank, extra batteries, dive gear, kedges, dinghy and so on, without having to lash stuff to the rails.

For those who like a good-size, dedicated navigation station with bags of room for displays and instruments, the Moody 42 certainly cuts the mustard.

If you like to feel safe and secure in all weathers and are not interested in chasing others around the cans on a Sunday morning, then this boat could be the one for you.

If the price tag is a little too scary, then the earlier Moody 40, or even the Moody 38 (not the 38S) might be the answer. Both are equally well built and luxurious – just a little smaller.

A BOW MADE FOR AL FRESCO LIVING

The asymmetrical split-level layout of the bow is designed to maximize space for outdoor living. Up top is an ample cushioned sunbathing area while just below is a versatile al fresco lounge-come-dining zone with a six-person table surrounded by an inviting C-shaped divan.

WAVE WATCHING

The helm area is flanked by windows in the hull that sweep up to gunwale level, creating a visual connection with the exterior environment. This exciting design feature also places the pilot right amongst the action, in the heart of the wake at high speeds, with water rushing by on either side almost as though it were part of the boat’s structure.

VERSATILITY AT ITS UTMOST

The galley is fitted out with a fridge, washing machine, cooktop and plenty of storage. The dinette can be easily converted into a comfortable double bed, sectioned off from the galley by a curtain.

A COMFORT-CENTRIC PHILOSOPHY

The full-size bathroom has a separate closable shower. A generous window allows natural light to illuminate it.

OUR ADVANCED TOOLKIT

The high-performance patented Stepped ‘V’ Ventilated Tunnel (SVVT) was developed by Michael Peters and incorporates a classic deep ‘V’ hull with two transverse steps and a central tunnel aft. It is this latter feature that sets it apart from other current stepped deep ‘V’s, with its shallow aft central tunnel increasing the longitudinal stability of the boat in high speed turns and adverse situations. The use of the SVVT hull on the Verve 42 represents the merging of cutting-edge hull forms with advanced outboard engine power and avant-garde concept design and styling. The combination of technologies culminates in a boat that boasts unmatchable performance, manoeuvrability and speed in its class and represents the largest and grandest SVVT pleasure boat available on the market.

Azimut’s pioneering use of carbon fiber lamination goes beyond pure performance. The Carbon Tech Generation offers expanded volumes onboard, while maintaining excellent dynamic stability and perfect handling. Preserving the yacht’s low center of gravity, the carbon fiber was focused on the upper parts of the yacht, lightening the laminated components by up to 30% and reducing the natural roll momentum up to 15%.

The Verve 42 can reach a top speed of 45 knots and cruises at 33 knots with three Mercury outboard engines, offered in 400hp and 450hp variants. It’s the ideal propulsion for dynamic and sporty yachts, such as the new Verve 42, with an unbeatable weight-to-power ratio. The pilot feels effortlessly in command with smooth handling and responsive controls. Low displacement is another important design objective accomplished thanks to this advanced solution.

The ergonomics of Fountaine Pajot catamarans have been designed to facilitate manoeuvring at the helm, enabling a small crew (2 persons) to manoeuvre the boat easily, both in port and at sea. Is a 42-Foot Sailboat Big Enough to Liveaboard?

In our last episode, we explored two 42-foot sailboats – the Jeanneau Voyage 12.5 and the Hunter 420 (see below). Both boats are large enough to sail the Gulf of Mexico (our current home waters), Coastal Atlantic, and one of the boats already has an Atlantic crossing under her belt.

But is a 42-foot sailboat big enough to liveaboard?

Yes, plenty of folks are already doing it, but here are our thoughts after giving the sailboats serious consideration.

Jeanneau Voyage 12.5

First designed in 1987, this 17,000lb displacement sailboat was created in France and intended for safe ocean passages. Its layout is very safe with deep cockpit combings and secure handholds throughout the living space below deck. This boat seemed well-built much like the Catalina 42 mkII .

Here’s what we enjoyed and disliked about the Jeanneau Voyage from aft to bow:

Hunter 420 Center Cockpit

The center cockpit seems to be designed for living on the boat. It offers ample deck space to stretch your legs or for alone time, and below deck, it’s about comfort.

Some will argue these are all the reasons the Hunter 420 is not a serious sailboat, but the question for us is not about winning races in the weekend regatta (though that sounds really fun!) – for us, it’s about comfortably and safely traveling the oceans to a variety of places.

This Hunter 420 needed some cleanup. That said, here are our thoughts:

The Hunter 420 has the large aft cabin like the Catalina 400 mkII , but the Hunter is a full cabin with over 6ft of headroom and storage cabinets lining the hull sides.

The sales brochure from Marlow Hunter (download the full PDF here ) says the Hunter 420 is designed for, “Extended cruising or even living aboard, the Hunter 420 is designed to provide the comfort and livability you desire in a manageable and affordable package… While many center cockpit yachts trade performance with comfort, Hunter has found the equilibrium and delivers both in a world-class boat.”

42ft Catamaran Models Comparisons

We compare the specifications, dimensions, sail area, and pricing on the most popular 42ft catamarans in 2020. The Lagoon 42 , Bali 4.2 , FP Astrea 42 , and Leopard 42 are within a similar price range and dimensions, but there are major differences. Let’s compare apples to apples to see how the match up.

• The Bali 4.2 has all the popular and successful trademarks expected of the Bali catamaran range. It has the huge open platform which provides a convertible indoor/outdoor living space using tilting “garage door” that lifts up into the ceiling. The convertible door is a unique feature on the Bali. When open, it look like a much bigger catamaran. The Bali 4.2 also features a door in the front of the salon that opens up onto the expansive forward cockpit. With the 4.2 Bali has adopted the newer trend of “Jack & Jill” bathrooms in the 4-cabin version which creates more space in the cabins. The big American-style refrigerator is another popular feature especially for families and liveaboards.
• The Lagoon 42 is one of the most popular models for cruising couples. She is a beefy and a very comfortable liveaboard catamaran with an oversized cockpit. The mast is centered in the salon which could be a deal breaker for some, but considering how many L42s we have sold, it does not seem to bother the people who own and adore them. The galley lacks storage, but there is space available to add cabinets and baskets. The cabins are ample with island beds and plenty of storage, particularly the owner’s cabin. It features the “Jack & Jill” bathrooms in the 4-cabin version, a great use of space.
• The Leopard 42 features all the popular and successful trademarks of the hugely successful Leopard 50. Like its big sister, it features the opening door to an intimate forward cockpit. The semi-raised helm station and “upper lounge area” is a very well done and a great feature for cruisers. It is luxuriously finished and all bunks are island berths that allow access from both sides. The forward-facing galley is well-designed.
• The Fountaine Pajot Astréa 42 is plush and comfortable catamaran with a well-appointed galley and sliding doors that open the salon up to the very big cockpit. The cabins are a nicely sized and spacious with island beds.

I have two specs that I would like to see on all four of these. The first is holding tank capacity. I find the holding tank capacity on most boats insufficient for live aboards. The other is air draft. The 42 foot and below range are ones that in the Southern US we have bridge anxiety. I would like to know if any of these have an ICW friendly mast option and what the height is.

In addition to Jay’s request… I would like to see some sort of price/performance/construction comparison too.

I’ve been a mono-hull sailor and live-aboard all of my life, but really am a novice with catamarans. I’m fairly familiar with the Leopard 44, having chartered them several times and really like them. I’m anxious to find out about what else is out there so I can make the best decision possible for my next boat. I’m really interested in a cat because I feel like I can sail a catamaran further into my later years then a mono hull.

Ron, I suggest you join the Bali Discussion if you can on the 27th of August [2020] on Zoom. Many of these questions will be answered during that discussion. As regards to your question about “price/performance/construction comparison” – I am not too sure what you want to know. I have added base prices in the comparison charts for all the models. The weight vs sail area (power) has some impact of course but for hulls of similar water length and hull shapes as these models have, performance for all four models will be similar, give or take a knot or so.

Sailors are certainly passionate about their boats, and if you doubt that bold statement, try posting an article dubbed “ 40 Best Sailboats ” and see what happens.

Barely had the list gone live, when one reader responded, “Where do I begin? So many glaring omissions!” Like scores of others, he listed a number of sailboats and brands that we were too stupid to think of, but unlike some, he did sign off on a somewhat upbeat note: “If it weren’t for the presence of the Bermuda 40 in Cruising World’s list, I wouldn’t even have bothered to vote.”

By vote, he means that he, like hundreds of other readers, took the time to click through to an accompanying page where we asked you to help us reshuffle our alphabetical listing of noteworthy production sailboats so that we could rank them instead by popularity. So we ask you to keep in mind that this list of the best sailboats was created by our readers.

The quest to building this list all began with such a simple question, one that’s probably been posed at one time or another in any bar where sailors meet to raise a glass or two: If you had to pick, what’re the best sailboats ever built?

In no time, a dozen or more from a variety of sailboat manufacturers were on the table and the debate was on. And so, having fun with it, we decided to put the same question to a handful of CW ‘s friends: writers and sailors and designers and builders whose opinions we value. Their favorites poured in and soon an inkling of a list began to take shape. To corral things a bit and avoid going all the way back to Joshua Slocum and his venerable Spray —Hell, to Noah and his infamous Ark —we decided to focus our concentration on production monohull sailboats, which literally opened up the sport to anyone who wanted to get out on the water. And since CW is on the verge or turning 40, we decided that would be a nice round number at which to draw the line and usher in our coming ruby anniversary.

Haitian migrant boat with guns, drugs intercepted in Florida: What we know

Over two dozen people this past month were discovered by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers being smuggled into Florida, according to FWC reports. Included in the group were unaccompanied children and armed smugglers attempting to make their way into Sebastian Inlet on Feb. 29, FWC said in a statement released Friday. Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the case in which guns and drugs were also seized from a 42-foot vessel in in Brevard County near the Indian River County line. Gov. Ron DeSantis used it as a prime example for tougher laws.

What did FWC officers discover on migrant boat?

FWC reports said the boat's operator was armed. There were 25 people, including five unaccompanied children, on board the boat entering the country. Officers also found firearms, night vision gear and drugs, the report said. The exact details of the interdiction were not released.

Who is investigating the smuggling operation?

The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are carrying out an investigation into the boat. It was not reported if charges had been filed in the case as of Monday morning.

What did Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis say about armed migrant boat?

DeSantis pointed to the incident as an example for the need to deter illegal immigration in a press conference this past weekend. Two separate laws signed by the governor would crack down on penalties for undocumented immigrants driving without a license and those who are re-entering the country after previously being deported.

“In their boat, in their vessel, they had firearms, they had drugs, they had night vision gear and were boating very recklessly, which would potentially endanger other folks,” DeSantis  told reporters on Friday.

DeSantis said int he press conference that the migrants were deported by the U.S. Coast Guard.

This incident comes two months after DeSantis announced that he is sending approximately 1,000 Florida National Guard troops to Texas to assist in security along the Mexican border.

Last week, DeSantis also announced that he was shoring up immigration security in the Florida Keys, where he deployed "250 additional officers and soldiers and over a dozen air and sea craft to the southern coast of Florida to protect our state."
