Kefalonia – Top yacht charter destination

Characterised by an indented coastline, limestone cliffs, sandy coves and strips of white sand, Kefalonia is tailormade for an idyllic yachting vacation itinerary.

Many beaches are only accessible on foot or via narrow twisting roads — and, of course, by yacht. There is no shortage of convenient and scenic anchorages, which will open the door to the charms of this Ionian paradise.

Kefalonia – Things to Do

Tap into your inner thrill-seeker and explore Mount Aenos. Its wild habitat will quickly help you shake off the shackles of stressful city life.

As the only national park situated on a Greek Island, and with an elevation of 5000 feet, you’ll feel like you’re walking on clouds. Admire the exquisite Greek fir and black pine forests and coastal views that stretch on forever.

The rebuilt capital, Argostoli — destroyed in an earthquake in the 1950s — lacks some of the atmospheric charm of older Greek island villages but it more than makes up for it with its bustling shops, cafes, tavernas and working harbour.

The tiled waterfront promenade, the pedestrian Drapano bridge, the fascinating caretta-caretta turtles feeding at the nearby Koutavos Lagoon… all contribute to making Argostoli a truly enjoyable town in which to wile away the hours.

History aficionados can visit the Focas Kosmetatos Foundation, a small museum dedicated to the social and cultural history of Kefalonia housed in one of the few buildings that survived the earthquake. There is also an Archaeological Museum, which was built after the earthquake.

Don’t miss out either on the Melissani and Drogarati caves.

Kefalonia – The Gourmet Experience

Of course being a modern town, Argostoli has a collection of some top-notch restaurants and tavernas, suiting the most discerning palate. And on the island as a whole, there is a staggering array of fine-dining venues and authentic Greek and Mediterranean eateries.

Try the Katavothres Club Restaurant in Argostoli for its spinach pies, cured steaks, squid dishes and strawberry salads. The Olive Lounge, in Lourdas in the south, also serves scrumptious cuisine, as does the Apostolis Taverna, in Skala in the south-east.

Kefalonia — The Nightlife

The centre of Argostoli consist of a large square, the Platia Vallianou, which buzzes with cafes and bars. If you continue up north to the pedestrianised Leoforos Vassileos Giorgiou V (King George V Ave), there are also plenty of bars, cocktail lounges and nightclubs.

Recommended options include Le Sapin Noir, Baroque Le Bistrot, Katavothres Club-Restaurant, Bee's Knees The Bar, Bass Club.

Insider tip Many yachting vacationers gather in Fiskardo, Kefalonia’s most northern port. This village miraculously survived the 1953 earthquake, so you can admire its exquisite Venetian buildings dating back to the 18th century while mingling with a cosmopolitan, well-travelled group of like-minded people.

Kefalonia is one of a group of islands on the western side of Greece in the Ionian sea. It is the largest of the Ionian islands and boasts the third highest mountain range in Greece. Parts of the island are now national parks, home to wild horses, golden eagles and other protected flora and fauna.

Minimal mooring fees along the way  (10-20 euros per week).

Sheltered line-of-sight sailing and an easy itinerary with short island-hopping distances make this cruising area perfect for those looking for a less demanding sailing holiday. An abundance of stunningly clear water inlets, protected bays to anchor in and quaint harbour towns to explore.​

Example route

The Central Ionian Flotilla  starts and finishes in Sami, Kefalonia. A classic 1 week route exploring numerous islands, anchorages and harbours. Most legs are short with the opportunity to anchor for lunch along the way and grab a peaceful night on anchor (weather permitting). Loads to see, places to eat, drink and swim.

Arrival Day

• Transfer time from the airport to our yacht base in SAMI is about 1 hour. Our yachts are ready for boarding at 3pm on arrival day. Our team will be on the quayside to meet you. After a short briefing about living on board, safety and the local town you’ll be left to relax and sort your things out. You have the option of going to the local beach, a nearby swimming pool or just relaxing on the boat. Everything begins the next morning at about 10am.

Day 1 (12NM): 

• We’re northbound with a short hop up the strait between Kefalonia and Ithaca. It’s the first day on the water and we spend time practising mooring techniques and boat familiarisation.
• Our destination is Polis Bay , a stunning, secluded bay on the North West corner of Ithaca. After mooring up on long lines, there’s a walk to the nearby taverna and some stunning views of the bay.

Day 2 (12NM):

• We continue North and sail up to Sivota on the south-east coast of Lefkas island. Verdant hillsides join seamlessly with rocky coves and sandy bays to create a picture postcard setting. The harbour is beautiful, with a small flotilla of colourful local fishing boats found lining the shore. Shops, tavernas, cafes and mini markets are all close by.

Day 3 (16nm):

• Kalamos is probably our favourite little place in the Ionian. Honestly, time has stood still here. An abundance of bays to anchor in along the way, perfect for snorkelling and exploring. Stern to on the quay if there’s space, if not a long line ashore. Grab a beer and watch the yachts coming in with the brilliant harbour master “George” taking charge!

Day 4 (14nm):

• A really easy day today. A short sail around Kalamos and then head North West, towards the captivating little harbour of Vathi on Meganisi island . Pastel-coloured houses huddle on the clifftop overlooking the deep blue bay below – where you happen to be moored up. Wander around the old harbour and village and discover another world and some brilliant tavernas. Great swimming, great food and quite simply heaven on earth. You’ll never want to leave here.

Day 5 (24nm):

• We head South today, sailing from one Vathi to another: Vathi Ithaca – the home of Odysseus in Greek mythology. Once in Vathi, there is plenty to see with a gorgeous harbourfront area to explore.

Day 6 (18nm):

• The last leg of our flotilla today as we return back to Sami with a nice easy run past the southern tip of Ithaca. If there is time on route, Antisamos beach is well worth a stop.
• Check out is by 10am the following morning. Our local team can assist with arranging onward travel.

Qualifications required

What qualifications do i need.

To charter a yacht in Greece as part of a flotilla or independently you will need a qualified skipper on board, and a competent crew member.  The ICC  ( International Certificate of Competence ) is probably the best ticket to have as it is widely recognised by the authorities here on the islands. This, or the  Day Skipper  practical certificates are the minimum required.

Feeling a bit rusty?

Many of our guests sometimes feel their skills aren’t quite ship-shape when they arrive for their yacht charter. There is the opportunity to practise your mooring skills under the guidance of our brilliant flotilla crew (subject to staff availability)

Skipper on Board

If you think you would like some further assistance for your first day of sailing, then an instructor can join you on board for the day and help you ease into the sailing.

Skipper on board is £165 per day (subject to staff availability)

Experience the Sailing… and the food!

You’ll experience some amazing Greek food whilst on a yacht charter, from classic Greek kitchen dishes cooked by local chefs, seasonal salads, mind-blowing tomatoes and freshly grilled sardines, pork chops and club sandwiches – the food in Kefalonia and the other Ionian Islands on a flotilla holiday is delicious and very reasonably priced.

When it comes to wine, there are 48 varieties of grape grown locally and some very fine internationally recognised wines to try, along with some fantastic Hellenic beers, there’s plenty to enjoy.

Wander along from your mooring and you’ll be sure to find coffee and fresh pastries for breakfast, plus pop into one of the great little mini-markets to stock up your yacht fridge for some lunchtime treats on anchor somewhere.

Both our yacht bases in Sami and in Lixouri have an excellent selection of mini-markets, bakeries and other shops available for buying provisions at the start of your flotilla week. If you happen to be in Lixouri, be sure to pay a visit to I-Scream Ice cream parlour on the left-hand side of the town square – you won’t be disappointed!

Evening Meals

Part of the joy of Flotilla Sailing is sitting down to a Greek feast at the end of a fantastic day of sailing. For the first evening, we arrange a group meal at a local restaurant  (not included in the holiday price)  and then for the rest of the evenings, the choice is yours.

Whether you’re moored at anchor and rowing to shore to a beachside taverna or simply stepping onto the harbourside, your Flotilla Skipper and 1st Mate will let you know the best options for where to eat. In the busier harbours, there’ll be many fantastic options to choose from. In the quieter locations, it might be just one or two.

For some of our harbour stops, there will be the option of a complimentary mooring for dining in a particular restaurant, but you are still free to eat where you like!

In the local area

Here are some options to check out in the local area:

• A sunset meal at one of the best beaches in the Greek islands is also a must. Petani beach and taverna “Erasmia“. Only a 15 – 20 minute taxi ride from the club this place is incredible – get there early for a swim and settle down for a wonderful eating experience.
• Head into town and Lixouri square, 5 – 10 minutes in a taxi from the club (1 taxi for 4 people is ~€10 one way). A wonderful place to watch the world go by with countless cafes, tavernas and bars. Whatever you do, don’t miss the best ice cream in the world at “I-Scream” – it’s divine and we love it!

Getting there

Our yacht base in Sami is quick and easy to get to, with a reasonable flight time of 3hrs from the UK and many regional departure airport options direct to Kefalonia airport. The transfer is approximately 60 minutes.

Thursday changeover day

Transfers are not included but can be easily arranged via our website. Bookings are made with our recommended transfer partner, Kefalonia Taxi Transfers.

On arrival in Kefalonia airport make your way to the arrivals gate exit and your pre-booked taxi will be there ready and waiting for you. It’s a 60 minute transfer to our yacht base in Sami

Day Charter Yacht Sailing, Kefalonia

Day chartering a sailing yacht in Kefalonia is often the highlight of any beach holiday and the perfect taster for sailing holidays to come. Your day sailing adventure begins at 10am, returning around 6pm. We aim to pack in as much as we can during the course of a day, always trying to tailor the day to your group’s requirements. A typical day will include a stop-off at a neighbouring island for lunch and at least a couple of anchorages for you to swim and explore the beautiful beaches and inlets on offer.

Our skippers are all competent RYA trained sailors with teaching experience. If learning to handle the yacht is something you always wanted to do then this can be done with expert guidance and supervision from us.

Day sailing yacht charters are limited in availability and cannot be confirmed too far in advance. If you are interested in day chartering a yacht on Kefalonia then contact us within a couple of weeks of your holiday date and we’ll let you know availability.

Yacht sailing day charters cost £495 (595 Euros) per day. This includes all taxes, harbour fees, fuel and up to 6 people including skipper.

We provide a selection of cold and hot drinks during your day and some fruit. However, you should bring a light lunch and some snacks unless you request a restaurant stop off for lunch.

Balboa is named after the Spanish explorer Vasco Balboa who first discovered Panama and the Pacific in 1513. The Balboa Yacht Club is famous if you are passing through the Panama canal sailing to, or from the Pacific Ocean as many yachts do when circumnavigating the world.

The Balboa is also the national currency of Panama and.. our personal favourite, it is also one of the best beer brands in Panama!

Balboa is a true “blue water” cruising yacht and has been built for adventure, her previous owners sailed around the world in her for 15 years before selling her to Captain Graham.

She is now based in one of the best sailing grounds in the world … the Greek Ionian Islands based at Kefalonia.

Balboa is a rare custom 42 foot sloop constructed 1999 in Hamburg, Germany. Only 100 were ever made by Asmus Boatyard.

Craftmanship and quality materials are used throughout including rich solid teak wood below decks giving warmth and soul.

Design, safety, comfort, latest equipment with beautiful classic lines combine to provide the perfect sailing yacht.

About Graham Parker

Captain & owner.

Graham is originally from Manchester U.K. and carries both I.C.C. & R.Y.A. ( International Certificate of Competence and Royal Yachting Association Skipper license. He also carries Greek flag with charter license to operate throughout the E.U. as a skippered charter yacht.

Son of a travel agent and a professional sailor he was born to travel and started sailing in 1982 soon after training as a chef and quickly caught the taste for life at sea along with his passion for good food.

He was involved in his fathers long distance yacht delivery business as first mate and cook undertaking numerous yacht deliveries clocking up 15,000 sea miles along the way.

Graham’s very first sailing trip in 1982 brought him to Kefalonia on a 2 month journey from Athens to U.K. at the age of 18 ( see photo below ). Now half a lifetime on, he has come full circle and is now Owner of SV Balboa here in Greece.

He returned to live and sail full time as it truly ranks amongst the World’s best sailing grounds in his opinion as well as many seasoned sailors. In addition to the sailing waters, the Greek people, weather, food and culture rank amongst the world’s best.

Graham has also lived in Spain, Ibiza, Italy and India as well as extensive travel / sailing including the Caribbean, India, Sri Lanka and Europe.

Along the way Graham trained and worked as a chef in hotels, restaurants and large scale events such as Royal Ascot, Wimbledon, British Open Golf and opened his own beach bar/restaurant in Goa, India.

None of these ventures and varied life experiences compared with life afloat, sailing to new horizons, meeting people from all over the world as well as satisfying his wanderlust and taste for adventure.

Sunrise Yachts, a luxury yacht building company which is based in Turkey, has been made a main sponsor of next year’s 2011 Moscow International Boat Show (MIBS). The four-day Russian yacht show event is currently scheduled to run from April 14-17 at the Moscow’s Crocus exhibition centre.

MIBS is organised by the ITE Group and it is one of Russia’s leading boat shows and is an internationally recognised superyacht event. The show covering everything from small parts and accessories to large superyacht with over 9,000 people and 178 exhibitors attended the last year show.

The Paolo Scanu-designed Sunrise 45 yacht is an ocean-going cruising yacht that was released in 2009 to much acclaim at this was the group’s first-ever model.

Sunrise Yachts was founded in 2007 by the German entrepreneur Herbert P Baum along with the French-British yacht builder Guillaume Roché. The luxury yacht group is based in Antalya, Turkey and utilises a 10,000sq m shipyard facility. Sunrise has two sheds measuring 100m (328ft) x 16m (53ft), as well as a 70m (230ft) x 16m (53ft) fully acclimatized paint shed that can accommodate new-build and refit projects up to 65m (213ft) in length and 1,200 tonnes displacement.

Along each side of the yacht-building facility, space is available for long-term sub-contractors with the latest equipment and logistics capabilities, along with air-conditioned storage, ventilation and extraction plants. The shipyard is organized as an “assembler,” based loosely on the car industry’s model, with a small, yet powerful project management team charged with running all the in-house long-term sub-contractors.
