Tobias Forge on GHOST in 2023: "There's going to be a change. Good change."

Ghost 2022 1600x900 Hubbard, Jimmy Hubbard

2022 was a massive year for Ghost — so massive, in fact, that we named the Swedish occult-rock troupe Revolver' s Band of the Year and crowned their latest LP, Impera , the Album of the Year . Which only sets the stage for a very big 2023.

In a new interview with Metal Hammer , Ghost mastermind Tobias Forge teased the band's plans for the year ahead and hinted an unspecified "change" that's about to take place with the group.

First, he laid out a big-picture view of Ghost's touring plans. "We're doing a lot of touring again," Forge said. "On previous album cycles we've done four legs in America and two or three in Europe and repeated.

"We're going to go into every territory next year, but there's going to be one European tour, one American tour. We are going to do a little bit of everywhere. There'll be a little bit of something up in upper Asia, on the far end there — a very well-established country with a lot of pop cultural fascination, and the home of videogames. And there's going to be something in the Oceania world, and there might be something south of Panama, and there might be something slightly north of Panama. It feels pretty solid."

Exciting stuff, but then Forge dropped the most tantalizing breadcrumb. "We're going to come out with a little bit of change before that — good change," he said, cryptically. "We're not going to go silent. Some things are public, other things not in public view, but there are a lot of things brewing."

Asked of Ghost's next album, he offered, "Everything I'm doing now is for the next record. I have a vague idea what that will be like and a vague idea of the title and the color scheme."

When Revolver spoke to Forge late last year, he confirmed that he was already beginning to map out the follow-up to Impera . "I've already started planning, or at least outlined a few things that I want to do differently," he revealed. "That can also be from a completely practical point of view. It doesn't necessarily mean that, "Oh, I hate this record — now I'm going to write a grindcore record." It's just that there's always something that you want to improve..."

Ghost Announce New Covers EP ‘Phantomime’ + Debut Cover of Genesis’ ‘Jesus He Knows Me’

There’s been some speculation lately regarding whether or not Ghost will release new music prior to their 2023 tour . Well, it looks like our question has finally been answered, as Ghost just announced their latest EP – Phantomime – and premiered a video for their new cover of Genesis ’ “Jesus He Knows Me” (which originally appeared on 1991's  We Can't Dance ).

Last Friday (April 7), the band released a new short (“Chapter 17”) that saw bandleader Tobias Forge (as Papa Emeritus IV ) struggling to use a juice box as he roused the threat of Papa Nihil. He then hands Papa Nihil a Ghost gold record, and the video’s caption reads: “Don't sleep on this, it will be a Good Friday.”

This, too, led fans to wonder what else Ghost are planning for 2023.

This morning (April 9), Ghost premiered a 30-minute video entitled “ Jesus Talk with Father Jim DeFroque .” Following a brief introduction (during which DeFroque welcomes viewers prior to talking about “the language” that everyone loves, music), he makes jokes about gothic music. Afterward, he humorously analyses the “blasphemous” lyrics of a few songs, including “ Jesus Built My Hotrod ” by Ministry and “ Personal Jesus ” by Depeche Mode , before ending with a positive assessment of the Genesis song.

(Along the way, DeFroque also speaks with a few call-in listeners about his take on Jesus and the music he played, as well as gives out this phone number for donations: 1-866-HOLY-HITS.)

Once the episode ended, Ghost started a countdown for the video premiere. As you can see below, the clip begins with DeFroque addressing a group of churchgoers and collecting donations. He then gets in his car and puts on the “Holy Hits” tape as he drives down the road. The rest of the video sees him rocking out to Ghost’s characteristic take on “Jesus He Knows Me” as he commits various transgressions.

Ghost’s Tobias Forge Details Next Album

by Alli Patton November 28, 2022, 4:30 pm

Swedish rockers Ghost, winners of Favorite Rock Album at this year’s American Music Awards ceremony, recently dropped details of their follow-up to their fifth album, 2022’s Impera .

Videos by American Songwriter

In conversation with Rolling Stone , Ghost frontman Tobias Forge talked about everything from the band’s current album and songwriting to their spooky aesthetic and how their sixth album would be slightly different from their trademark glam metal. While Forge explained the band is “slowly, slowly, slowly” planning for new music, he also gave a little insight into what’s to come.

“There are a lot of things in my head that I feel like I want to explore writing,” he told the outlet. “I’ve never really ended an album production without or left an album production without feeling like there are things that I would want to do different next time. Try to slowly and steadily, you try to perfect [it].”

He went on to explain that experimentation is a big part of the album-making process for Ghost. The people you’re with, the space you create in, and the state of mind each band member is in all factor into the album, he said.

“So right now, I’m more about vibing,” Forge said, giving no concrete details as to what the next album’s vibe will be.

He added, “I’m trying to build a new vibe for writing this record now, just to sort of see to it that I don’t end up repeating myself and do something else and just evoke a few good things from the past and try to eradicate some of the things I didn’t like. And once more, you try to do it perfectly.”

Get a feel for Ghost’s current “vibe,” below, with the painted-faced, mask-clad aesthetic and rock opera theatrics of their recent release, “Spillways.”

Ghost’s Tobias Forge Explains The Concept Of The Band’s New Album

Ghost mastermind Tobias Forge has unveiled the concept for the band’s upcoming fifth studio album, which is expected out in the not too distant future. Speaking recently with KLAQ , Forge elaborated on what to expect from the album, offering:

“The album that I have been working on, I came up with that concept years ago. We played in Seattle in 2013, 2014 — something like that — we played at Showbox At The Market. I remember that day I came up with the idea for this record, this upcoming record. Because I got a book called ‘ The Rule Of Empires ‘ [full title: ‘ The Rule Of Empires: Those Who Built Them, Those Who Endured Them, And Why They Always Fall ‘.] So, basically, I wanted to make a record about the rise and ultimately the unescapable fails and falls of empires. And an idea like that can take — at least me — quite far. So once you get that idea of, like, ‘Oh, now I know what the pile is gonna look like. I know now what not to put in there.’ And it was the same thing with ‘ Prequelle ‘; it was gonna be about the great death, a medieval, primordial threat of annihilation which was, I guess I wouldn’t say carnal but maybe a tiny tad more spiritual and philosophical death, with the ever presence of actual termination. Whereas this record about the empires was gonna be a little bit more practical, I guess; a little bit more, I don’t wanna say political. So it wasn’t really hard to be inspired by the last couple of years.”

Ghost Blasphemously Celebrate Easter With Genesis Cover ‘Jesus He Knows Me’

By Daniel Kreps

Daniel Kreps

Papa Emeritus IV and Swedish heavy metal act Ghost blasphemously celebrated Easter Sunday with a surprise cover of Genesis ’ 1992 single “Jesus He Knows Me.”

Fitting for a song that spoofs televangelism, Ghost paired their rendition with an Alex Ross Perry-directed, age-restricted video featuring the duplicitous Father Jim DeFroque who — after delivering his sermon — goes on an all-night party binge complete with multiple drug runs, encounters with sex workers, and other frowned-upon activities.

“We wish to inform you that one person’s beauty is another’s blasphemy…,” Ghost said of the video.

Ghost interview: the masked metal band on their new “positive” record about The Plague

To begin, a horror story…

Ghost the band

It’s chilling to think how The Black Death arrived in Ghost’s native Sweden. In fact, there’s a deeply upsetting story on the website Gizmodo that can be summarised thus. After marauding through Asia, by the late 1340’s, the plague arrived in England. A decade of horror followed. Then a ship left England for Scandinavia; it’s cargo, a shipment of wool. The plague killed every man aboard. The ship then drifted for a few years or so, the disease feasting on the rotting corpses of the crew, until it ultimately ran aground near Bergen, Norway.

From then the plague spread into Sweden. Then into Russia. By 1353, one in three Europeans had lost their lives. It would take two hundred years for Europe’s population to return to pre-plague numbers.

“I think this record might be the first positive record ever written about the plague,” says Tobias Forge of Ghost, describing his fourth studio album ‘Prequelle’ with just enough levity in his voice to acknowledge the ridiculousness of that statement. “Essentially, it’s a record about survival, start to finish. The record takes you through the idea of mortality, before ending on the question, ‘if you could circumvent death… would you?’ I come from the metal underground, and the subject of The Black Death has been excavated many times. But those records are about the decimation of everything, and little light is shown to the survivors. There’s an argument that mankind learned a lot of good from what happened…”

This talk of the Bubonic Plague is almost certainly allegory. ‘Prequelle’, see, is the follow up to 2015’s ‘Meliora’, the record that dug Ghost out of the metal underground, and anointed them a pretty big deal. This meant tours with Iron Maiden and Slayer, Avenged Sevenfold and Deftones. It meant acclaim from the fuzzy lips of Dave Grohl – not in itself especially impressive; like an alt-rock Bono, Grohl knows the cool bands he needs to anoint and when – the masked Foo Fighter being rumoured to have sat in on drums for the band on a variety of occasions (as we’ll get to, you wouldn’t know otherwise), as well as producing their ‘If You Have Ghost EP’ in 2013. ‘Meliora’’s stand-out song, ‘Circice’, even won a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2016. ‘Prequelle’ arrives with much expectation. It also arrives with Tobias bruised and battered by its creation.

Ghost the band

‘Prequelle’ is a record about looking forward. But first, a look back. Early 2017 saw Tobias sued by former Ghost personnel, claiming the frontman had, “in an underhanded and shameless way, attempted to transform Ghost from a band into a solo project with hired musicians”. Tobias responded that “no legal partnership” ever existed between him and the other members, that they were paid a fixed salary to perform as his wont, that they were essentially session musicians. Like everything does now, this all played out in public, with opinion welcome from anyone. Where this gets really messy, is that unless you had an in, nobody really knew who any of Ghost were. Tobias performed as a variety of masked cardinals; three iterations of the demonic anti-pope Papa Emeritus, changing each record. The band performed in masks as the Nameless Ghouls. They were sort of like KISS if that band sang about Satanic scripture instead of shagging. Legal proceedings forced Tobias out of the shadows and shot mystique in the head”

“All things considered, a year down the line, having been through so much turmoil,” says Tobias, with acceptance that he now only has to pretend to be an actual ghoul onstage, not off it, “I’ve come to realise that what happened needed to happen. Also, I’m a big fan of rock, of rock history, and I’ve read every classic rock biography of every band I’m a fan of. You know what? The same shit takes place in every single one. A friend of mine, a very successful songwriter, said to me, ‘you’re not really in the game until you’ve been sued, so welcome in!’ and I think he’s got a point. I’ve been in lots of situations in my life where I’ve managed to turn pain into growing pains. Really, what happened was a receipt that things are going well.”

Tobias takes a deep breath.

“It’s fine. It’ll be over…”

It is unquestionable this experience shaped the record’s DNA, even if, with the lengthy process of litigation dragging along in the background, there is a limit to how much Tobias can say. Freely, that is. It’s all there on ‘Prequelle’. “The song ‘See The Light’ (a stormer of a power pop metal song, it should be said) sounds like it’s about people who’ve crossed you,” we say, thinking of lines such as, “Many a rat I’ve befriended” and “Of all of the demons I’ve known, none can compare to you”. There is a pause so pregnant, metaphysical wet towels are piling up all around us, before Tobias responds, “Yes”. We ask if it’s a song that relates to his current situation. He replies, diplomatically, “I think it’s a song that can apply to any situation in which you’re surrounded by enemies. Really, it’s a song about redistributing anger and negativity.”

As of writing, ‘Prequelle’ isn’t released for another couple of weeks, but you will most likely have already heard its lead-off single, ‘Rats’, which also debuts Tobias’ new rubber faced persona, Cardinal Copia, sort of the midpoint between a deranged Satanic preacher and a used car salesman. If you’ve seen the video, it turns out that the Cardinal can bust a move (Tobias: “Have I ever had dance lessons? I’m mobile, but not nearly as much as our promotional videos lead people to believe…”). ‘Rats’ is also, perhaps, the most direct comment on what Tobias, and the Ghost that’s now been repositioned as a vessel for his self-expression (he prefers ‘project’ to ‘solo’ by the way) have been through during its parent albums creation.

Ghost the band

“It’s a song about public trials,” says Tobias. “Rats traditionally were what carried the plague. But they’re also a good analogy for something that’s all around you. I mean, one thing that’s annoying about rats, is they can hide in your walls. They can come up through your toilet. They sort of eat their way into your life. And so I think about the kid getting bullied, and how in the past, the bullies were just at school, or on the way to school. Now they’re there all the time. Online.”

“We look back on ancient times,” he continues, “and we like to think about how sophisticated we are now, whereas in the past we were barbaric. But in the last ten years, I think we’ve regressed back to such a stone throwing, stupid, superstitious, nincompoop way of thinking. It’s fucking horrible…”

So you’re referring to social media? I’m thinking of the line in Rats, “they’re still coming after you, and there’s nothing you can do…”

“Well, as much as I’m an advocate for whistleblowing culture in the modern era – and of course I’m for that, things that are bad for the world should be exposed – I’m not sure that’s the forum for it. All those people just… shouting…”

Does this relate to your personal experience in wake of the lawsuit? When that story broke, it felt like everyone had an opinion on you…

Another pause. Then finally, “Yes”.

“So many people have opinions based, not on fact, but spite,” Tobias continues. “There are people who just love to destroy other people. It saddens me to admit, that I think at whatever state of human civilisation we arrive at, the will to destroy other people, is something that is innate in some people.”

There are of course moments on ‘Prequelle’ that are filled with joy too. A kind of dark, sticky, oily joy, yes. But joy none-the-less. There’s a reason Ghost’s aesthetic riffs off the ecclesiastical after all. All their best songs are big, bold, searching. Take Dance Macabre. Far closer to Duran Duran in their pomp than it is Carcass, if there is a death disco somewhere, an actual one with skeletons and tasty alcoholic beverages that are slime green and taste of formaldehyde – the best night of your death, so to speak – it’ll surely be the most requested song all night.

“I really wanted to explore the use of piano on this record,” says Tobias. “Take the song, Life Eternal, the last song on the record. I wanted it be very ambitious, almost classical, and the piano gives that song air and clarity…”

He concludes. “Like I say, I wanted this to be a positive record, a record about survival…”

‘Prequelle’ by Ghost is out on June 1

The final show on Ghost’s US tour is an absolute triumph - and one big question about Papa Emeritus IV's immediate future is answered

Ghost play to more than 30,000 people over two nights in los angeles – but did cardinal copia/papa iv make it out alive.

Papa Emeritus IV on stage

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

The final show of Ghost’s current US tour should be a joyous occasion, but there’s a pall hanging over it. There were been some fairly big hints dropped in the last instalment of their Ghost Chapter mini-movie series that frontman Cardinal Copia – aka Papa Emeritus IV – isn’t long for this mortal coil. Whatever Twitter is calling itself these days is buzzing with concerned Ghost fans fearing the worst. Even Copia himself seemed to hint as much onstage at last night’s show, the first of two nights here at LA’s colosseum-like Kia Forum. “We are approaching the end of an era,” he croaked. “So let’s have a good time.” Does he know something we don’t?

Let‘s put those dark thoughts aside for now and celebrate Ghost for what they’ve are as we approach the end of 2023. The band that started as real-life mastermind Tobias Forge’s last roll of the dice after years of near-misses and abject failures have turned into one of metal’s most unlikely success stories. These two shows at the Forum – in which no cellphones are allowed – will see them playing to upwards of 30,000 disciples, among them Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson, Cradle Of Filth’s Dani Filth and New Years Day's Ash Costello, all watching on intently from the seats.

In little over a decade, Ghost have gone from being incense-waving intruders on the middle of a bill at a death metal festival in a London club to metal’s ultimate razzle-dazzle showmen. And there’s plenty of razzle and dazzle tonight, from the gigantic stained glass windows that illuminate the back of the stage to Forge’s multiple costume changes – upwards of eight in total, including more than one shiny lamé suit jacket and his trusty old papal-robes-and-mitre ensemble.

Brilliantly, there are as many people on stage tonight as there are in Slipknot : Forge plus eight ghouls, including three guitarists, two keyboard players and a black-clad, batwinged backing vocalist who twists, twirls and bashes her tambourine like an undead Stevie Nicks.

But this is Forge’s show – or rather, Cardinal Copia’s. Part needy, Ritalin-starved teenager, part unlikely sex symbol who prompts orgiastic screams from contingents of the crowd with every flouncing flick of the wrist, he prances and preens around the stage, channelling the ghosts of Freddie Mercury and vintage Willy Wonka.

He’s a magnetic MC, convincing the crowd that it’s a glamorous Friday night rather than a drab Tuesday, and offering a winking, “Go home and fuck somebody, or go fuck yourself”. He’s an even more charismatic singer these days, nailing epic hair-metal-anthem-in-disguise Kaisarion and bringing playful menace – or maybe menacing playfulness – to Cirice and Ritual (the 30 people who saw them play that song at the Camden Underworld during their second ever show back in October 2010 would be gobsmacked at the journey its taken since). And then there’s Mary On A Cross – there’s always Mary On A Cross - and another Papa Nihil cameo, wheeled out in an upright coffin towards the end the ever-fantastic Miasma to rip out that sax break, before being unceremoniously bundled back in his casket and wheeled offstage. It's a slice of showbiz genius that never gets old.

Surprises? Yes, and they’re biggies. The first is the troupe of eight, writhing skeleton dancers who make their first appearance during a suitably roaring Twenties , dancing provocatively around Forge before hoisting him high above their heads like it’s an episode of Strictly Come Dancing .

The second is the small b-stage at the opposite end of the floor, tricked out with baby grand piano. It’s there that Forge suddenly appears out of nowhere to sing their hauntified cover of Roky Erickson’s If You Have Ghosts with the Ghoulettes – a pianist, two cellist and second vocalist whose soaring soprano has Forge genuflecting in awe at the song’s conclusion before launching into an impassioned speech in support of anyone who is experiencing mental health issues. It’s a rare serious moment, though not so serious that it stops him donning an electric blue boxer’s robes and boxing gloves and dancing his way back through the crowd to the mainstage like an undead Mohammed Ali.

And there’s the third, potential surprise – the one everyone’s been dreading. By the end of a three-song encore featuring Kiss The Go-Goat , immortal banger Dance Macabre (featuring the return of the skeleton dancers, who once more lift Forge above their heads like a sacrificial victim in a blue lamé jacket) and a magnificent Square Hammer , the crowd is tangibly nervous. What’s going to happen? Will Cardinal Copia be bumped off for a new, unknown entity? Is this the start of a brand new chapter for Ghost?

The simple answer is: no. Of course they weren’t going to kill him off tonight – there are eight more dates on this tour, in South America and Australia, and the man who has allegedly won the second most Employee Of The Month awards still has some use for the clergy  The rumours of Cardinal Copia’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. He lives to dance another day. For now, anyway.

DRACONICON Release Cover Of GHOST’s “Square Hammer”

The Italian power metal band Draconicon has released a cover of Ghost's "Square Hammer". The cover is available as a digital single on all digital platforms.

Philip Skrim of Draconicon comments on the new single:

"Recording a cover is not a common choice among bands. We believe it's a great way to demonstrate how much a song can change when our own unique sound is applied to it. We enjoyed arranging it, and we hope you like the result!

“Additionally, covering a song is our way of paying tribute to a band we really admire. We are huge fans of Ghost, and they are one of the main sources of inspiration for us. Their ability to create simple yet powerful songs is incredible in the contemporary metal/hard rock scene."

Which Spirits Are Back (And Who Might Not Be) in ‘Ghosts’ Season 3

Posted: January 15, 2024 | Last updated: January 16, 2024

Ghosts ‘ third season is closer than ever with the premiere a mere month away, but as we approach the coveted day, the big question still remains: Which ghost was “sucked off” at the end of Season 2?

The CBS comedy left viewers with quite the cliffhanger as “livings” Sam ( Rose McIver ) and Jay ( Utkarsh Ambudkar ) sat in their driveway as a beam of light shone on their lavish Woodstone estate. Knowing that the beam means one of the spirits could be passing onto the other side, we can’t help but wonder if any of the main ghosts are going to be among the missing.

Teased in a newly-released promo, the show is leaning into the idea that one of the spirits might actually be gone when the show picks back up, but some cast members have teased some reassurances of their returns, offering a more defined picture of possibilities.

Having both received ASTRA awards in the new year, Ambudkar and Danielle Pinnock , who plays Alberta, posed with their accolades on set in costume, teasing that the Jazz-age singer will be sticking around to belt out more tunes in Woodstone.

Additionally, Román Zaragoza who plays Sasappis shared images of himself in costume on social media, captioning the snapshots, “Season 3 .”

While no other stars who play spirits have confirmed their returns, both Asher Grodman and Rebecca Wisocky , who play pantless Wall Street trader Trevor and robber baron wife Hetty, have shared the Season 3 promo (embedded above) on their respective social media profiles.

While the missing spirit may not be from the core group, there is room for speculation. When it comes to the world of Ghosts , there’s always room to expand the lore, and we’re wondering if there’s a chance that one ghost could get “sucked off” and then return to Woodstone?

'Ghosts' Season 3 Premiere Storyline Hints at Missing Ghost as CBS Unveils First Photos

Sheila Carrasco, who plays fan-favorite Hippie Flower, recently had a baby, close to the start of Season 3’s delayed production . Could the cliffhanger be used as a loophole to give Carrasco a little extra time off? We’re certainly in support if it means Flower will return to our screens in the near future, but for now, this is merely speculation.

But there are other variables that might support this theory as Carrasco would have been pregnant while the show was still filming Season 2 in early 2023, giving her and the writers time to plan an explanation for her temporary absence.

Additionally, Ambudkar posted an acceptance speech for his ASTRA award and accidentally forgot to mention Carrasco, correcting the error in his caption . While it could have been a simple oversight, perhaps it’s proof of her absence from set at the moment, like an “out of sight out of mind” situation. Again, this is merely speculation, but an interesting idea we’re eager to potentially see explored.

What do you think of this theory? Let us know in the comments section, below, and stay tuned for more on Ghosts as we approach the Season 3 premiere.

The new Ghost Rider has been revealed, and it's a well-known Marvel villain

There's a new Spirit of Vengeance in town, and it's a villain Marvel fans will recognize

Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance #2 cover art

Marvel has been teasing that a known villain will soon take over as a new Spirit of Vengeance in the upcoming Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance limited series, and now the publisher has revealed the villain who will take up the mantle: the Hood.

For readers of writer Benjamin Percy's recent Ghost Rider volume, this won't be a total surprise, as the Hood appeared as an antagonist 2023's Ghost Rider Annual #1. Now, he's going to become the new Spirit of Vengeance as Johnny Blaze is cast into hell.

Along with the announcement, Marvel has revealed Juan Ferreyra's cover of Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance #2 as well as series artist Danny Kim's design for the Hood as the Spirit of Vengeance.

"Armed with a demonic cloak and dark mystical abilities, Parker Robbins’ undying lust for more power and fortune has made one of the Marvel Universe’s dangerous threats," reads Marvel's official announcement. "Now with the Spirit of Vengeance claiming what’s left of his soul, there’s no stopping his bloody takeover of the criminal underworld. By the time Johnny Blaze is able to claw his way back from the abyss to reclaim the Spirit of Vengeance, it’ll be far too late!"

Parker Robbins, AKA The Hood, was created in 2002's The Hood #1 by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artists Kyle Hotz and Eric Powell. A low level criminal in New York City, Robbins rises through the ranks to become a supervillain when he gains possession of a demonic cloak and boots that allow him to turn invisible and walk on air. The Hood will be the villain of Marvel Studios ' upcoming Ironheart streaming series, played by Anthony Ramos.

"Some villains you know all too well. Doctor Doom. Thanos. Mephisto. But I find it especially fun to bring the lesser known baddies out of the shadows and give them a shot at a starring role. That's what I did with Omega Red during X Lives of Wolverine/X  Deaths of Wolverine - and that's what I'm doing now with Ghost Rider," Percy states in the announcement.

"The Hood wants a taste of the big time. And he's made a deal with the devil to help him on his way. This is what happens when the Spirit of Vengeance is stripped from Johnny Blaze and grafted on to a character who has no moral compass. An epic crime saga - flavored with horror - awaits readers in Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance."

Ghost Rider: Final Vengeance #1 goes on sale March 13, followed by #2 on April 18.

Ghost Rider is one of the best supernatural superheroes of all time.

GHOST Is Back With First New Single In Two Years, 'Hunter's Moon'

Swedish heavy rockers GHOST have released a new song called "Hunter's Moon" . The track, which was produced by Klas Åhlund and mixed by Andy Wallace , is featured in the latest blockbuster installment of the legendary film franchise "Halloween Kills" . The "Halloween Kills" soundtrack is set to arrive October 15 via Sacred Bones , with the film hitting theaters (and Peacock ) the same day as well.

A series of inspired encounters between creative forces from various worlds of sound and vision has resulted in "Hunter's Moon" , the infectious first new track from GHOST since 2019's "Seven Inches Of Satanic Panic" , and its phantasmagoric video directed by Amanda Demme .

The genesis of "Hunter's Moon" can be traced back to GHOST 's November 16, 2018 show at the Forum in Los Angeles. Ryan Turek , vice president of feature film development at Blumhouse Productions ( "Get Out" , "Insidious" , "The Purge" , "Us" , "Whiplash" ) attended the sold-out show, striking up an instant rapport with GHOST 's mastermind Tobias Forge — one that developed quickly and deeply via meetings, podcast appearances, and ultimately a visit with co-writer and director David Gordon Green on the North Carolina set of the upcoming "Halloween Kills" .

Three years nearly to the day since that first fateful exchange, GHOST 's "Hunter's Moon" has materialized on DSPs, will play as the "Halloween Kills" end credits roll, and will be released January 21, 2022 as a collectible seven-inch single by Loma Vista Recordings . "Hunter's Moon" can be streamed, purchased, and/or pre-ordered in its vinyl incarnation. The retail version of the seven-inch will feature the special B-side "Halloween Kills (Main Title)" , performed, produced and engineered by John Carpenter , Cody Carpenter and Daniel Davies .

"Hunter's Moon" features OPETH 's Fredrik Åkesson on guitar and THE SOUNDTRACK OF OUR LIVES founder Martin Hederos on the piano. Producer Max Grahn and " A Ghoul Writer " are listed as the song's composers and lyricists.

Earlier this month, GHOST announced a 26-date co-headlining U.S. arena tour with VOLBEAT and special guests TWIN TEMPLE , coming to cities including Seattle, Denver, Chicago, Houston, and Phoenix.

Last October, Forge told Sweden Rock Magazine that he was planning to enter the studio in January to begin recording GHOST 's fifth album. "The actual recording will last around six weeks and then there's two to three weeks of mixing and mastering," he said. "So sometime in March the record should be finished, but it won't be released until after the summer. As it looks now, knock on wood, we will then go on tour. We won't release an album until we know that we are actually going on tour. The album release will coincide with the start of a tour. Of course, we could announce an album release date and then, for some reason, it might not be possible to tour, but that's a whole other matter."

In March 2020, at final show of GHOST 's "Prequelle" tour in Mexico City, Mexico, the band officially introduced Papa Emeritus IV , the new character who will front the act for its next LP phase.

Forge performed as a "new" Papa Emeritus on each of the band's first three LPs, with each version of Papa replacing the one that came before it. Papa Emeritus III was retired in favor of Cardinal Copia before the release of 2018's "Prequelle" .

In October 2019, Forge confirmed to U.K.'s Kerrang! magazine that there would be a new character fronting GHOST by the time the group's next LP sees the light of day.

"Prequelle" debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and featured the chart-topping singles "Rats" and "Dance Macabre" .

In December 2018, GHOST nabbed two Grammy nominations, "Best Rock Album" for "Prequelle" and "Best Rock Song" for "Rats" .

Five years ago, GHOST became the first Swedish rock band ever to win a Grammy — 2016's "Best Metal Performance" for the song "Cirice" .
