Ghost Train and Chips

We stayed at Weymouth Bay Holiday park and decided on a trip to nearby Fantasy Island Fun Park. Our children are 4 and 2.5 so please bear this in mind when reading the review. When we arrived it was like something out of a horror movie, everything looked rusty and there didnt seem to be anyone in sight. When we walked further into the park there seemed to be 2 members of staff one operating all of the 10-12 attractions and one in the arcade selling wrist bands. Now the value here is under 3s get a wristband for £4.50 which is really great value especially when your 4 year old is small for her age. Win!!! The rides creak and seem to be in a bad state of repair. There are flying elephants, 3 different types of merry go rounds, a couple of track based rides, a ferris wheel, a pirate ship and tea cups. Forget going here unless you like arcades or your kids are under 5. There is a soft play area here but this is so special it has its own section in this review. There is some bumper cars for an extra charge and quad bikes/go karts but these didnt appear to be working.  So onto the soft play area, this is a 3 story high soft play area with no height restrictions and no attendie looking after this. Kids are able to please them selves with the absolute joy of vertical slides. There is literally no care for health and safety int his place. There were buckets attached to the ceiling to catch rain water from holes in the roof. One set up had a bucket into a bucket into yep you guessed it another bucket. The cafe seemed pleasant and had all the usual things you would expect from a cafe, tables, chairs, a decent menu, toilets and a unlocked door straight out onto the track of the ghost train. There is a really good view of the play area from the track so was really glad when our two year old wondered out there to greet his sister. I stood there for a little while with my chips wondering how a place could exist like this in 2019. If there is a independent inspector who passes this place as even remotely acceptable please resign or get fired because you dont have a clue. If you are thinking of taking your children here, please do them a favour and just drop them into the middle of the sea its much safer.  In summary the place is a death trap and should be shut down, if you want a few cheap rides and your happy taking the risk then by all means, I guess the kids dont know the difference. The straps on the rides dont hold them. All the park needs a face lift and its no surprise it was empty when we visited. I would give this a 0 if I could

Hi there ..... are you talking about Fantasy Island Park, as I cannot quite belief what you have written! .. a horror movie?? All our rides are tiptop condition, RUSTY .... I don't think so! The only horror movie I could possibly think of is the Ghost Train! Our rides are checked regularly. The soft play is attended at all times, the children are not allowed in without one, we have sign clearly stating this! Death trap ..... shut down ..... risk..... face lift ...... if you knew the hours, blood and sweat that goes into this place, you would not be making these comments! .....all I can think, is that you have vendetta against fantasy island, as your comments are ridiculous!

it is good for most ages tokens not to expensive or you can get waistbands open day and night staff friendly and helpful

We went in term time on a sunny Friday morning and the place looked deserted. On entering we found one of the staff who showed us where to buy the wristbands and then immediately came over and started the ride my children wanted to go on. There was no hesitating from staff that they were the only ones going on a ride and there was only a short waiting time if the ride operators were on another ride. The soft play area is big and the cafe looks over the sea and looked lovely. Great value for money and will definetly return if in the area

took my grandson here and he loved it. more for the younger child. dodgem cars, helter skelter and roundabous. also arcade to spend those pounds!. at christmas a great wonderland theme. very popular.

Was only open weekends I assume as start of the season and then only a few rides open. The wristband is for under 3's which is stupid as no one is going to put a 2yr old on some of the rides.

The wristbands are for the soft play also, £4.50 is very good value for rides and soft play...... our rides do have to be maintained, so that would be the only reason the rides would not be operating! ... regards fantasy

Brilliant way to spend a few hours on rides, especially for little ones. The amusment arcade is clean and bright with a chance to win money or tickets to exchange for gifts.

Does anyone know what is going one with this train, it is not in service, and Express Sprinters do not normally pass through Dorchester? http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/Q00270/2018/01/19/advanced

Wonder if there will be any Yeovil Junction to Weymouth services, makes it a lot more accessible. Guess they did not perform well in recent years.

'Ghost train' spotted on Plymouth's 'abandoned' railway line

Last year residents in Lipson could have sworn they saw a 'ghost' train chugging along Plymouth's abandoned railway line separating one neighbourhood from another

  • 16:00, 18 DEC 2022

The old railway track that ran from Friary Railway Station. It has been out of service for over 40 years

Lost and abandoned railway and tram lines can be found all over Plymouth and the surrounding areas. Travelling by rail used to be one of the main modes of transport and you can still see remnants of many of these forgotten tracks throughout the city - some are still clearly noticeable while others are immortalised only in memory.

Some have been removed and now serve as walkways and cycle paths; some are derelict and overgrown, but one which cuts through the heart of Plymouth is widely believed to be 'abandoned'. Did you know it actually still operates to this day?

Railway and tram lines were also used to transport goods to get to and from warehouses and fishing industries surrounding Sutton Harbour. One such line still exists, in plain sight, running alongside Tothill Park and separating Lipson from Prince Rock.

The line formerly ran from Plymouth Friary station which is now demolished and better known as the White Friars Court housing estate and Friary Retail Park - you can still see the old pillars by the entrance near Ebrington Street today .

Despite the line now going nowhere with the track coming to an end on the east side of Tothill Road bridge, last year shocked locals were taken aback when they spotted a locomotive chugging along. Some believed they had seen a 'ghost train'.

This story was first published in June 2021.

Bsed on old railway maps, part of this line would also have served the Turnchapel Branch. In 1953 it is reported that the 'Titfield Thunderbolt' ran over the track from Friary Station to Turnchapel Station in 10 mins. It carried around fifty members of Plymouth Locospotters' Club and was organised by Plymouth's Odeon Cinema following a showing of a film of the same name.

The actual name of this piece of railway is the Cattewater Branch. The layout has changed many times during its lifetime with all the major sections having closed. According to the Cornwall Rail Society, as of 2013 only a single stub remained serving a large scrapyard at Cattedown. It's possible the 'ghost train' spotted on the tracks some weeks ago was making a rare journey in that direction.

Reports came in to PlymouthLive in 2021 that 'an old train was going alongside Tothill Park on the abandoned rails.' Described as a 'ghost train' with approximately '20 oil carriages' by a local man, it came as quite a surprise to residents in the area who long believed this stretch of track to be abandoned. While it does lead to nowhere following the closure of Friary Station some 40 plus years ago, the rails are very occasionally used to freight trains.

The manual points lever at the end of the track can be clearly seen from Knighton Road. Pulling the lever changes the points between two different rails, allowing a freight train to diverge between two different directions. In this instance it allows trains come from the Laira Depot to reverse on their way to Cattedown.

Desborough Lane and neighbouring Junction Gardens are located right by the, you guessed it, junction of the railway track. At this point of the line the track splits off into two, one part heads towards the Laira Depot on Embankment Road while the other goes towards Cattedown.

The end of the line. Two buffer stops mark the end of the former Plymouth Friary railway station line. The station itself was demolished in 1976 but prior to its destruction it operated both passenger services and as a goods depot.

Part of the tracks run behind Tothill Community Centre and around the side of the park. The station master's house for the original Friary station is on the corner of Beaumont Road and Tothill Road and is now a doctor's surgery.

Trains on their way to Cattedown will have to pass over the Embankment Road rail bridge. For many the bridge will be better known from the ground level as being painted with seagulls and often the cause of delays if a lorry that's too big tries to get underneath it

The track can be seen here going over Bulmer Road. T he branch railway from Friary Station to Cattewater Junction Signal Box on the Turnchapel Branch was originally proposed by the Plymouth and Dartmoor Railway Company on behalf of the London and South Western Railway Company, who operated the line from its opening in 1880.

Here you can the railway runs over Lucas Terrace and you can join the cycle path with runs alongside much of track, although it is largely hidden by fences and shrubs.
