What Do We Mean When We Talk About Weight?

There are two types of weight for a boat, dry weight, and wet weight.

Dry weight is the weight of the boat without any fluids in the tanks. Wet weight is the weight of the boat with the fluids in the tanks.

You can also have a loaded weight, which is the wet weight, including any additional toys or equipment you have stored onboard.

What Do We Mean When We Talk About Length?

There are many different ways to calculate a boat’s length. For this reason, you want to make sure that you have a clear idea of what the length of your boat really is.

The boat’s registered length is generally the maximum overall length, which is the length on deck plus any bowsprit or swim deck.  The length of the boat on the waterline is also an important boat characteristic that you should know.

Due to the shape and construction of the hull, these numbers may differ.

For example, if you have a boat that has a 50-foot deck with no bowsprit, your registered length will be 50 feet.

Different Types of Boats and Their Average Weight and Length

Below are some different types of boats and their average size and weight, and the factors that go into them.

1. Luxury Yacht

Yachts are normally classified as any watercraft that can be used for pleasure or sport and can range from 30 ft to over 100 ft.

While a yacht can be as small as 30 ft. long, a yacht is often considered a cabin cruiser until it is 39 ft. or more, then it is considered a proper yacht.

A yacht would be considered a large yacht once it’s length is over 79 feet. A yacht is considered a superyacht or megayacht if it is over 115 feet long.

Because of the wide variety of sizes, the weight can vary greatly when it comes to yachts, and it is hard to nail down an average.

Some more distinctive differences between yachts include:

• It is a yacht with three levels of enclosed living space.
• A sportfishing yacht is any yacht that is geared towards fishing.
• They often have areas designated to storage for rods, bait, tackle, and even areas to store the day’s catch.

2. Sailboats

Large sailboats are yachts propelled by sails and can be found in lakes, rivers, and even out on the ocean.  Today, they almost all have auxiliary power in the form of an engine.

While the weight and length of a sailboat can drastically vary, the average weight of a sailboat is about 8,800 pounds. This weight does not include added gear, equipment, or fluids.

The weight will vary greatly depending on the length of the sailboat. Sailboat lengths can range between 8 feet to 472 feet.

The 472-foot sailboat also carries three masts that tower at over 91 feet each. This can definitely add more weight than the 8-foot vessel.

Six facts about the build of Sailing Yacht A

One of the largest superyachts in the world , the 142.81 metre Sailing Yacht A has pushed the boundaries of yacht building. We reveal some of the most amazing facts about how this boat came to be.

The construction of Sailing Yacht A

This incredible superyacht was commissioned by Andrey Melnichenko. As owner of Motor Yacht A , we knew Sailing Yacht A would be anything but conventional. Melnichenko is one owner who delights in challenging the status quo and moving the game on, introducing new techniques and technologies in his yacht projects. Sailing Yacht A ticks both boxes: at 142.81 metres LOA, the “sail-assisted motor yacht” is one of the largest superyachts in the world.

Working once again with Philippe Starck on the design, Melnichenko assembled his own team to take the project from concept to completion. He chose Dirk Kloosterman, a veteran project manager of superyacht builds, to lead it. Kloosterman was involved in the build of Larry Ellison’s Rising Sun before taking on Motor Yacht A for Melnichenko.

Sailing Yacht A  is his biggest undertaking. Kloosterman’s first challenge was to find a shipyard with the capabilities to build such a vessel. Few major deep-water shipyards wanted to take on the risk of such a radical project, but Nobiskrug’s purchase of part of the HDW yard in Kiel, Germany, presented an opportunity.

“This was an excellent facility, with its large docks and the draught needed for the project,” Kloosterman says. “In March 2011, we signed the deal for pre-engineering to start. It was made clear to the yard that the team wanted large input and control over the build so the standard tender-and-bid process, with the yard supplying subcontractors, was scrapped. Cost control for an eight-deck motor yacht, with the added dimension of sailing, was going to prove challenging.”

Sailing Yacht A's imposing scale

Sailing Yacht A is a sharp, three-masted motor yacht with sailing potential, constructed mostly in steel incorporating composite and carbon fibre to keep weight down. In profile from her high bow, the sheerline climbs aft, before dropping down to an almost retroussé stern. The line is seamless, without interruption or sight of any deck equipment, anchors, balconies or openings of any kind, but they are all there, cleverly hidden away. Astonishingly, there are 24 shell doors in the hull.

The windows, which are all oval, look small from a distance, but all have a magnifying effect, making them seem huge from the inside. A special one-way film covers the exterior of the glass for privacy and helps to blend them into the custom metallic paint finish by Alexseal.

Her scale is extraordinary: 142.81 metres LOA, with a maximum beam of 24.88 metres and a draught of eight metres. She has eight decks, connected by multiple elevators and free-floating spiral staircases, garages for four tenders and a submarine, as well as a touch-and-go helipad on the bow. Every part of her interior has been designed to be flowing and organic.

Inside, up to 54 crew will run a professional galley large enough to serve a hotel and a powerplant and hotel services, stretching uninterrupted across two decks. In contrast to the volume of the everyday living accommodation is arguably the most incredible feature on board, occupying the smallest space: an underwater viewing pod moulded into the keel, offering a view of the props.

To make sure it all worked, hydrodynamic research facility HSVA in Hamburg performed towing tests for the hull, and the Wolfson Unit at the University of Southampton carried out wind tunnel tests to determine aerodynamic loads. This phase of the project revealed the optimal combination of sailing characteristics, seakeeping behaviour and performance under power. MARIN, in the Netherlands, conducted final tests of the model with keel and rudders.

With simulated aerodynamic loads applied, results concluded that the yacht’s heeling angle when under full sail would be a maximum of 12 degrees at 20 knots true wind-speed upwind and 35 knots downwind.

The rig and sail plan of Sailing Yacht A

Three colossal unstayed masts – the largest carbon masts in the world – define Sailing Yacht A . The mainmast towers 100 metres above the waterline – taller than Big Ben. An enclosed electric gimballed crow’s nest is incorporated, to whoosh a crew member 60 metres up the mast for what will surely be one of the most amazing views on the water. Dykstra Naval Architects , the Dutch naval architect that designed the rig for Maltese Falcon , was the obvious choice to develop an easy-to-use and safe sailing system.

Being “sail assisted”, the ratio between sail area and the yacht’s displacement is somewhat lower than would be found on a pure sailing yacht. Dykstra optimised the sailplan with full roach sails and freestanding aerodynamically efficient masts that can be rotated a total of 70 degrees to increase lift-drag characteristics.

Curiously, the masts are curved. “When we started to design this rig,” explains Mark Leslie-Miller from Dykstra, “the distinct feature of the freeboard sloping up towards the stern was already defined. For styling reasons, we wanted the foot of the sails [thus the booms] to align with the sheerline.” Sails this big would need to furl rather than flake when not in use. Furling booms, however, have to be at 90 degrees to the mast in order to work. Rather than tip the entire mast forward to preserve the right angle, Dykstra designed in the curve to keep the design aligned.

Magma Structures in Portsmouth, UK, developed the unique freestanding spars in carbon fibre, the only material that could cope with the stresses involved; masts this size cannot, in fact, be built using metals, according to Magma’s Damon Roberts, and they posed quite a challenge for the team. “Since the rig concept is unprecedented on this scale, there were no easy answers or standard solutions for any of the challenges that the rig design posed,” he says.

The sail and booms on Sailing Yacht A

With the masts designed to carry the whole load, they were able to calculate the maximum bending-force load on the lower bearing by using the predicted upper wind speed limit. “Allowable material stresses and safety factors then clearly led to the structural requirements for the design,” Roberts adds. The bending load at deck on the main mast, for instance, is about two-and-a-half times that of a Dreamliner aircraft wing and about two times that on Maltese Falcon , which has the highest-loaded freestanding masts to date. To put it another way, the masts can withstand 90 knots of wind with full sail up (equivalent to a Category 2 hurricane), or two double-decker buses hung from the tip of each.

Magma built the masts using high-strength carbon/epoxy prepreg laminate. Each mast was produced in four large sections: top and bottom, port and starboard. In the lower sections, 370 layers of carbon were laid up in open moulds. For the curing, Magma designed and manufactured oven software to monitor and control the cook cycle over a three-day period. Embedded in the masts is a network of fibre-optic sensors to give real-time comprehensive load data for safety, historical data, condition monitoring and sail performance optimisation.

The total sail area of 3,747 square metres is equal to the size of half a football pitch, and is 67 per cent larger than Maltese Falcon’s 2,370 square metres. Unlike the many small sails that deploy from Falcon’s mainmast, Sailing Yacht A’s fully battened mainsail, at 1,464 square metres, is a single piece and furls on a carbon-fibre mandrel inside a U-shaped boom at the press of a button; no crew are required. The total length of fibre used in the sail is 754 miles, or long enough if pulled straight, to stretch from the shipyard in Kiel to Monaco.

The sails, by Doyle Sailmakers of the US, are a combination of carbon and Technora fibres and covered with taffeta to protect them from UV. The trick was determining compression loads on the battens and then engineering a soft inboard end capable of furling reliably but, at the same time, handling the forward thrust of the battens without tearing. Future Fibres, in Valencia, constructed the carbon-fibre booms, which measure 25 metres (foresail), 27.5 metres (mainsail) and 23.6 metres (mizzen).

Glass technology on Sailing Yacht A

Germany’s GL Yachtverglasung (GLY) developed the yacht’s glass, including the longest piece of curved glass ever made: a 1.8-tonne, 15 metre bulwark forward on the bridge deck. “The designer wanted to make the look as clean as possible and preferably without railings. The only way to make invisible railings was to make them out of glass,” explains Kloosterman.

Two other huge glass bulwarks are found on deck seven, at 11 metres in length, and forward of the owner’s deck, at 14 metres long. GLY also supplied three elliptical-shaped pieces for the underwater observation pod that is moulded into the keel. By using special GLY-MarineCobond interlayers during lamination, the company reduced the glass thickness and weight by as much as 50 per cent compared to typical windows.

Meeting Lloyd’s requirements that the underwater windows had to be tested at 10 times the working pressure took a bit of ingenuity. GLY built a steel tank and bolted on the observation pod windows then moved this assembly to Bodensee on the southern border of Germany and sunk it to the bottom of a 120 metre-deep hole to create the adequate pressures. The nearly foot-thick windows passed the test.

Sailing Yacht A's propulsion

One of the most important design factors was keeping the weight down as much as possible, so the choice of propulsion was key. The goal was to achieve a cruising speed of 16 knots and a 21-knot top speed and be able to sail silently. The solution was unlike any ever installed on a yacht: a customised diesel-electric system. Building on a basic concept from river cruisers, EMS in Hamburg developed this system and then MTU, together with Vacon and DEIF, took it further.

“We use variable-speed generators,” explains Kloosterman. “This means that we can get more power out of a generator because we can run up to 2,050rpm (giving 2,800kW) and the advantage is that instead of requiring five generators we only need four. This means a large saving in weight but also in costs of purchase, installation, operation and maintenance.

The generators can also spin down to 1,050rpm when load is less; the Superimposed System Controller (SSC) constantly calculates the optimal speed and determines the best combination of generators on line. For example, the SSC may ascertain that at a particular electrical load it is more fuel efficient to run two generators at 1,200rpm than run one generator at 2,050rpm. Running two at a lower speed can have many advantages such as reduced noise/vibration, reduced overall fuel consumption and reduced engine wear.” Maintenance intervals will almost certainly increase, says Kloosterman, from 15,000 hours to as much as 30,000 hours.

The pair of propellers can be driven by the twin MTU 20V 4000 ML73 main diesel engines or by electric motors or by a combination of both through clutches and gearboxes. The same electric motors can also be used as economical shaft generators when the main engines are driving the yacht.

“There are a variety of separate propulsion modes to suit the requirements of cruising and sailing; the propulsion system is very flexible, and I believe this is the future of yacht propulsion,” Kloosterman says.

SAILING YACHT A – World’s Biggest Sailing Yacht – $600 Million

SAILING YACHT A measures 143 meters making her the world’s biggest sailing yacht.

SAILING YACHT A is far more than a luxury vessel. She is a masterpiece of design and innovation combining sleek metal surfaces with futuristic naval architecture that took over two years to complete.

Launched in 2017, both the interior and exterior of this mega sailing yacht were designed by Phillippe Starck, who calls SAILING YACHT A one of his most high-profile projects.

The superyacht has taken on voyages all around the world and was most recently spotted sailing off the coasts of Gibraltar and Cyprus.

SAILING YACHT A interior

Both the interior and exterior of SAILING YACHT A were designed by Philippe Starck , a French architect known for his wide range of design projects.

He famously worked on the impressive MOTOR YACHT A, and the two iconic vessels share a lot of similarities in their layout and specifications.

Both yachts look incredibly futuristic and are sure to attract attention wherever they go.

While no exact details are known about the interior of SAILING YACHT A, it is rumored that she has an underwater observation pod with 30 cm (1 ft) thick glass located in the keel of the vessel.

This is one of the few parts where design mockups are publicly available, and the style of the interior can be examined.

The observation pod appears to have cream upholstery that stretches across the floor and ceiling of the cabin.

Two large symmetrical glass windows allow guests to view the breathtaking underwater world without even having to leave the yacht.

A third window is located at the bottom of the pod, which lets it feel like a true 360-degree experience and is almost comparable to a submarine.

A small floating side table provides guests with a space to place drinks or snacks in the pod and enjoy a one-of-a-kind dining experience in this unusual location.

Since the pod is located at the keel of the yacht, the large propellers are most likely visible from the windows suggesting it is most commonly used at anchor.

The superyacht has ten cabins that can accommodate 20 guests as well as a further 54 crew member.

Paparazzi photos and the work of yacht spotters provide a rare glimpse into the interior of SAILING YACHT A.

No official footage of cabins or salons has been released, although Starck’s past work suggests that the yacht would be furnished with opulent elements that perfectly combine luxury with style.

Silver and metal decorations play a large role and tie the interior design of the yacht together. 

However, SAILING YACHT A was launched much later than her motorized companion suggesting her interior might be more modern with minimalistic elements rather than lavish furnishings.

Occasional photographs shot through open doors, and portholes show expensive art pieces decorating the interior of the yacht and rather absurd design choices like a set of chairs shaped like large human heads.

The yacht appears to feature a large, open salon with an elevated seating area and symmetrical arches on either side.

While details aren’t known to the public, it is rumored that SAILING YACHT A features a luxurious spa area, a sizable gym as well as an owner’s suite with several rooms that is only accessible via fingerprint.

The massive private area is said to feature a 60-inch television that disappears into the floor as well as a rotating bed. 

Considering she is the largest sailing yacht in the world, it is surprising that SAILING YACHT A can only host 20 guests.

This suggests that there are spacious entertainment areas located on board, including several saloons and ample below-deck space for crew members.

Due to her large size and a small number of cabins, it is assumed that SAILING YACHT A can welcome a large number of day guests onboard for special events and celebrations.

Biggest sailing yacht controversy

It has been the topic of debate that SAILING YACHT A is not the largest yacht in the world but instead the ‘largest sail-assisted motor yacht.

Depending on the definition used, that would make BLACK PEARL the biggest sailing yacht in the world.

The most expensive sailing yacht

SAILING YACHT A is the most expensive sailing yacht in the world and cost an estimated price of US $600 million – a relatively “affordable” price considering her large size and tonnage.

A calculated US $48,000 per ton is considered low in the yachting industry, where European yachts are usually priced at US $60,000 per ton and over.

This average price would bring the value of SAILING YACHT A up to nearly US $800 million. However, due to the fact that the official sales price has not been released to the public, these numbers are mere estimates and cannot be validated officially.

Since the yacht is a custom project and one of a kind, it can be assumed that the total value of SAILING YACHT A lies far higher than her initial price.

In addition to any cost for the crew, supplies, and docking fees, she has annual running costs of US $50-75 million.

SAILING YACHT A is currently not available for sale or charter.

Specifications

SAILING YACHT A is incredibly large for a sailing yacht, and even compared to the longest motor yachts in the world, she would rank in the top ten.

Paired with her unusual futuristic design, this mega sailing yacht has a length of 143 meters (469 ft), a beam of 25 meters (82 ft), and a draft of 8 meters (26 ft) making her a more than an impressive vessel.

SAILING YACHT A was built by Nobiskrug , a German superyacht builder at their Kiel shipyard, and launched in 2017 after more than two years of construction.

To date, SAILING YACHT A is the largest yacht ever built by Nobiskrug and remains their flagship.

It is considered the most complicated project to ever be completed in the sailing industry and gained international media attention on its launch date. It has a total volume of 12.558 tons and is powered by hybrid diesel-electric engines. 

SAILING YACHT A is considered the longest sailing yacht in the world and is more than 36 meters (118 ft) longer than BLACK PEARL, which ranks in second place on the list.

Coincidentally her project name was WHITE PEARL which is a reference to her brilliant white exterior, although it couldn’t have referred to BLACK PEARL since she was only launched in 2018, a year after Melnichenko’s masterpiece.  

Her three-carbon masts stand at an impressive 100 meters (328 ft), making them some of the largest in the world and taller than Big Ben in London.

However, her large size is sometimes also limiting as she struggles to fit underneath most bridges and is therefore constrained to certain routes.

She once passed under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco with only 20 feet to spare between her masts and the bottom of the famous bridge.

She is rumored to have an electric gimbal crow’s nest, which allows for remote operation and advanced wind measurements. Her sails are all white, and her masts have nearly sickle-like shapes, which add to her striking futuristic appearance.

It is noteworthy that she is commonly photographed with her sails down, which suggests she might be using her support engines more frequently than true wind power.

With a sail area of more than 3.700m^2 (40.000 square ft), she can reach top speeds of up to 21 knots which is supported by her twin 4895 Horsepower MTU engines .

Her average cruise speed lies at 16 knots, and her total range is estimated to lie at 5320 nautical miles. She features a state-of-the-art sail system that is able to raise and lower the sails and anchors at the touch of a button. 

SAILING YACHT A has a steel hull and composite steel superstructure, which is unusual in the superyacht industry as most shipyards choose aluminum to reduce weight and keep the vessel light.

She currently sails under the flag of Bermuda, which is common for prominent sailing yachts.

During construction, SAILING YACHT A was called project WHITE PEARL, a fitting name for this sizable vessel.

Like her interior, the exterior of SAILING YACHT A was designed by Philippe Starck, although the Dutch studio Dykstra Naval Architects played a role in the naval architecture of the vessel.

They specialize in sailing yachts of all sizes and have been involved in many prominent projects in the industry over the years.

She features eight teak decks with a large swimming pool located in the center and several elevators spread across the yacht.

She is even said to carry a submarine. The main pool is lowered into the deck allowing for additional privacy for the owners.

Her hull has 24 shell doors, which are used to access equipment and provide additional deck space if needed. She is accompanied by four tenders also designed by Philippe Starck and built by Lloyd Stevenson in New Zealand.

Their sleek and elegant design matches that of the main vessel, and they are used for transporting guests and taking them on excursions.

One of the tenders of SAILING YACHT A is a carbon fiber speedboat especially reserved for the owner who can operate the vessel autonomously whenever required without the aid of crew members.

This allows Melnichenko, who is a fan of driving high-speed cars to be independent when staying aboard his luxury yacht. The tender is small but powerful, reaching speeds of up to 53 knots.

The larger tenders can seat up to eight passengers and feature panoramic windows ideal for sightseeing and exploring but are much slower at only 30 knots. 

The aft features a large garage used for storing jet skis, tenders, and other equipment.

High-profile artists such as Snoop Dogg are rumored to have performed here, although detailed evidence of such concerts remains unknown.

Whenever the aft isn’t used for performances or parties, it can be transformed into a swimming platform designed in the yacht’s iconic futuristic style. 

However, despite her cutting-edge design features, SAILING YACHT A surprisingly also includes classic nautical elements. She has a wooden steering wheel that is reminiscent of a pirate ship, although it is not operational.

The captain of the vessel can instead use modern technologies to operate the massive yacht via a small joystick and touchscreen.

There are symmetric extendable balconies that protrude from the bridge of the yacht and allow the crew to have a better view to be able to gauge the dimensions of the immense vessel.

Of course, SAILING YACHT A has a modern underwater lighting system that illuminates the vessel perfectly at night.

In this article, we explore different types of yachts, such as motor yachts, sailing yachts, catamarans and trimarans.

YACHT TYPES

If you consider buying a yacht, you need to decide on its type.

Which yacht type do you prefer: motor yachts, sailing yachts or catamarans?

These three categories are the most popular types of yachts, although there are also other ones.

Let’s look at each of them separately.

Yacht Types: Motor Yachts

Motor yacht is the most common type of a superyacht. Around 80% of world’s yachts are motor yachts.

These luxury boats are powered by strong engines, do not have sails and over time have become symbol of a classy and laid-back lifestyle.  

Pros of Motor Yachts: 

• Powerful and fast 
• Greater technological advances 
• Greater deck space, more living volume 
• Easier to find suitable crew members 
• Easier to operate than a sailing yacht 
• Easier to host guests of all personalities 

Contras of Motor Yachts:

• Less sustainable, higher fuel consumption 
• Less adventurous feel (if you are looking for it) 
• Shorter range (can only be powered by motor) 
• Engine noise 

Motor yacht is probably the first thing which comes to your mind when you think superyachts.

Classy and sleek design, plenty of deck space, comfortable staterooms and lots of entertainment options – all this you can find aboard a motor yacht.

Motor yachts come in different types and sizes and with different purposes. The latest trend is explorer motor yachts, which are explicitly equipped for cruising in cold polar regions.  

Yacht Types: Sailing Yachts

Sailing yachts are the second most popular yacht type. If you love the wind and want that classy sporty feel while aboard, then a sailing yacht is the right yacht type for you.

Another advantage is that when not powered by motor, sailing yachts are very quiet. It is only the sound of waves and wind (and an occasional seagull) around you.   

Pros of Sailing Yachts: 

• Unique feel of adventure 
• Can combine peaceful cruise with racing  
• Very quiet when powered by sail  
• Lower fuel consumption 
• Lower maintenance cost 
• Can sail in shallower waters  

Contras of Sailing Yachts: 

• Tend to be slower that motor yachts (in case you like speed) 
• Less stabilization  
• Smaller cabin space 
• Might have less lifestyle equipment available (Jacuzzi, gym, cinema) … 

There are only two types of people out there: sailing yacht fans and motor yacht fans. Rivalry between fans of the two yacht types has become legendary.

Probably, you already know which group you belong to. Nevertheless, we still recommend you charter both sailing and motor yachts to be sure you are making the right choice. If you are still unsure, read about the third yacht type below. 

Yacht Types: Catamarans  

Catamaran is defined as a vessel with two parallel hulls which are joined together. Due to its form, catamaran is the most stable of all yacht types.

If you are looking for stability and comfort, or have family members who easily get seasick, buying a catamaran is a valid option to consider. 

Pros of Catamarans: 

• More fuel efficient & sustainable 
• More stability  
• Can be used in shallow waters 

Contras of Catamarans: 

• Less volume for staterooms 
• Higher dockage rates than for a monohull 
• Different sailing feeling compared to a sailing boat 

Catamarans offer a great opportunity for taking family vacations, which will leave every family member happy. Since they are more difficult to sink, they are also considered the safest boats.

If you are looking for extra stability, comfort and space, but also do not want to compromise on adventures and possibility to explore shallow waters, catamaran is right yacht type for you. 

Yacht Types: Trimarans 

Big brother of a catamaran, a trimaran, has even three hulls – one main hull in the center, and two smaller hulls on each side.

You will not see them as often, but there are certainly also big fans of trimarans out there. Trimarans are designed for racing or leisure but are also widely used for military and shipping purposes. 

YACHT PRODUCTION TYPES: SERIAL, SEMI -CUSTOM, CUSTOM YACHTS

Now that we’ve covered yacht types, let’s investigate which production options are out there. Unlike the automotive industry where most of the car models come from production lines, the yachting world offers future owners more possibilities.  

SERIALS YACHTS 

This is the most common and less expensive way to get to your new dream boat. Serial or production yachts are yacht models which are produced by shipyards in various quantities based on model and size.

Serial does not mean that you cannot tune it to your taste though. Manufacturers offer different sets of modifications with certain yacht models. You will likely get to choose between several layout models and different equipment options.

Obviously, if you order a newly build yacht, you are likely to get more space for your improvements, than if you decide to refit an already existing yacht. 

SEMI-CUSTOM YACHTS  

A good way for owners who wish more character and comfort to their boats but at the same time do not want to order a fully customized vessel, is to order a semi-custom yacht.

Semi-custom yachts stand between serial and fully customized boats. You save a lot of time and effort by picking an existing engineered platform from which to start planning.

Then, together with experienced naval architects and designers, you enhance it up to your expectations by customizing layout (possibly including superstructure) and interiors.

Ordering a semi-custom yacht gives you more freedom to decide how your yacht will look like. Construction time is also much shorter in comparison with a fully customized yacht, since many parts are already designed, engineered and possibly even pre-built.

By ordering a semi-custom yacht, you can shorten construction time from two – three years up to several months!

Shipyards are also less likely to fall behind the delivery schedule, since they have produced similar yachts before and know which time is needed for delivery.

Most semi-custom yachts are designed to suite majority of potential future owners, which means that layout, size, engineering etc will be well thought-through in advance.

Due to extensive previous testing & refining of semi-custom hulls by the shipyard, it is possible that your new yacht will turn out more reliable and problem-free than a fully customized yacht. 

CUSTOM YACHTS 

If you wish to be unlike anybody else and want to take your dream a step further, a fully custom-built yacht is exactly what you need.

Almost anything is possible and achievable in today’s superyacht building industry. The only considerations are your budget and international safety and security standards, more on which you can read in our article on Safety and Security Onboard Superyachts. 

With a custom-made yacht, you can be sure you will get exactly the boat you want, tailored just for your preferences, no other yacht in the world being similar.

Consider longer delivery time and substantially higher cost, since R&D expenses are not shared between yachts of the same series.

Many owners buy a smaller replacement yacht, while they are waiting for their customized dream boat to leave the docks. 

A fully customized superyacht is surely the most exclusive type of a yacht one can own.

Yacht Sizes

Now let’s look at different yacht sizes. But first, let’s find out what yacht size actually is.

How is yacht size measured?

Length Overall (LOA) is the most widely used metrics of yacht length. It is measured from the aftmost tip of the hull to the furthermost point of the stem, measured parallel to the waterline. It is probably the only yacht length definition you need to know as an owner.  

*For yachting geeks out there, here are other yacht size definitions used in the industry:

Length of Deck (LOD) : deck length excluding bow sprits and other projections. Makes particular sense for sailing boats, since their Length Overall can considerably vary from their Length of Deck.

Length of Hull (LH or LOH): Length of hull including fixed fendering but excluding any bow sprits. It can be shorter than LOA.

Length of Waterline (LWL): length of a boat at the level where the boat sits in the water.

Interesting fact: Did you know that with each additional 1 meter of length, the internal volume of a yacht increases by 6-7 cubic meters? A 40-meter yacht is not just twice longer than its 20-meter companion. According to Cube Law, it is also 6-7 times larger in volume!  

Motor yacht sizes by group

Let’s look at different sizes of motor yachts. To make things easier, we divided them into 4 groups.  

Please note that the following crew and guest numbers per yacht size are only approximate.  

Factual crew numbers will depend on specific yacht length, cruising style, owner preferences and whether the yacht charters or not.

Factual guest numbers will depend on yacht registration type, especially with larger yachts.

22 – 40 meter motor yachts

Motor yachts in of this size are most likely serial production yachts. This means that you can buy a specific yacht model which has been designed before, and choose your own details, such as finishings and furniture.

Yachts of this size will need 4-6 crew members: yacht captain, one or two deckhands, one or two stewardesses, a yacht chef, and presumably an engineer.

22-40 meter long motor yachts normally can host up to 8 guests.

40-60 meter motor yachts

Motor boats of 40 meters length and larger are considered superyachts also within circles of superyacht industry professionals.  

This is where operations and crew requirements become considerably more sophisticated. There are also more semi-custom and custom boats in this size segment.

A 40-50 meter motor boat will require a crew of approximately 9-13 crew members, depending on specific owner requirements and cruising / charter preferences.  

A possible crew setup would be: yacht captain, first officer, bosun, two engineers, three or two stewardesses, two deckhands, one or two chefs (often a guest and a crew chef).

Crew of a 60 meter motor yacht will count around 20 members.

40-60 meter long motor yachts normally can host up to 12 guests.

60 – 80 meter motor yachts

Here the yachts grow much larger, and so do the costs of maintenance.

A yacht of 60 meters length will have a crew of 20-23 members. A yacht of 80 meters length can have a crew of up to 80 members.

The maximum number of guests will depend on yacht registration type. Many owners choose to keep maximum of 12 guests, since it allows for a simpler regulation regime.

80 – 180 meter motor yachts

A 100 meter motor yacht will require 80-100 members crew. Its tonnage will exceed 500 GT, which means that the yacht will fall under more regulations: STCW, SOLAS, ISSC, ISM and others.

A 170 meter motor yacht can have up to 100 crew members.

The largest yacht worldwide at the time of writing is Azzam, at 180 meters built by Lürssen. Azzam can host 36 guests and a least 80 crew.

Maximum guest number on a yacht of this size can still be only 12 guests. But if the yacht is registered as a passage vessel, it can be significantly more.

How does yacht size affect my yachting experience?

Size does matter after all.

Let’s look at factors that change with the growing size of a yacht.

While thinking of upgrading to a bigger vessel, do not forget that as the yacht size grows, following factors also increase: 

• Yacht price 
• Availability and price of marina dockage 
• Fuel consumption 
• Number of full-time crew members 
• Time you can spend away from ports 
• Quantity of water and other supplies the yacht can carry 
• Functionality and entertainment options 
• Complexity of repairs  
• Applicability of laws & regulations 
• Time needed to sell the yacht

During the past decade, superyachts increased in size dramatically, and this trend continues. According  to an article  by Boat International, there has been around 10.000 yachts over 24-meter LOA in the world. Around 80% of them were motor yachts.

Most of the owners start small and upgrade their boats over years. Once you owned a smaller yacht for some time, you will understand exactly what you love about it.

With so many different types of yachts to choose from, it can be hard to know your Flybridges from your Tri-Decks if you’re just starting your search. Although there is a growing number of terms used to describe the different types of yachts out there, many of the terms overlap or are used interchangeably.

Definition of a Yacht

What exactly makes a yacht a yacht, and not just a big boat? There is no nailed down definition of what makes a yacht a yacht, but most boaters consider a yacht to be any type of sea vessel that is used strictly for recreational or pleasure purposes like cruising , entertaining, water sports, fishing , or year-round accommodations.

Yachts are usually large enough to have some form of sleeping quarters (cabin) on board for overnight trips as well as a kitchen (galley) and a bathroom (head). They are also large enough that they require more than human inputs (i.e rowing) to propel forward.

Yachts are classed by many things, including their mode of propulsion, size, style, amenities, and function.

General Types of Yachts

A yacht is first defined either as a sailing yacht, motor yacht, or gulet yacht, and then as a sports or luxury yacht.

• Sailing Yacht: a yacht mainly propelled via wind and sails
• Motor Yacht: a yacht propelled via one or more motors
• Gulet Yacht: a hybrid yacht with both sails and motors
• Open Yacht, Cruiser, Cabin Cruiser, Express Cruiser: an otherwise uncategorized standard yacht for cruising and entertaining
• Luxury Yacht: a yacht that includes high-end finishes and features and the latest in modern performance technology. The term ‘luxury’ can precede any type of yacht, i.e. “luxury motor yacht”, “luxury sailing yacht”, etc.
• Sports Yacht: a yacht geared towards fishing, water sports, or cruising with a sleeker design and more powerful motor for faster cruising speeds. The term ‘sports’ can precede other types of yachts as well, i.e. “sports motor yacht”.

Yacht Sizes

Yachts can further be defined as a superyacht or megayacht, depending on their size.

• Super Yachts are typically 24 meters (78 feet) and above.
• Mega Yachts are typically over 80 meters (260 feet).

Most motor yachts on the market are typically 24 meters (78 feet) or less.  There are only a handful of megayachts in the world due to their extravagant price tag.

Yacht Style Categories

Yachts can further be grouped or defined according to their form and function, such as with flybridge, sedan, pilot house, and sportfish yachts, for example.

• Classic Motor Yacht: a yacht that was built between the 1920s and 1970s (before today’s modern technology began dominating modern yacht manufacturing). A modern yacht can be built based on the classic motor yacht style.
• Sedan: a popular yacht style with deck space above the hull and living quarters below. The living quarters of a sedan yacht are enclosed and single-level.
• Flybridge: a sedan-style yacht with an open deck and more comfortable living space above the main bridge of a vessel.
• Daybridge: a multi-level yacht that is even more open than a flybridge. Belize Motoryachts are known for creating this distinctive style of yacht.
• Open or Enclosed: a term used to describe the layout of and access to the flybridge. In an enclosed flybridge, access to the above flybridge is enclosed inside the living space. In an open flybridge, access to the flybridge above is open to the elements.
• Downeast Style: a low-profile yacht with a large working cockpit and small helm station. This highly recognizable style is inspired by the mid-1900s traditional Maine lobster boat. Back Cove yachts are a shining example of downeast-style inspired yachts.
• Pilothouse: A multi-deck yacht like a flybridge with a larger interior main deck.
• Sky Lounge: an enclosed area at the top of the vessel that provides the benefits of the view but with several amenities, protection from the elements, expansive windows and sometimes a sunroof.
• Cockpit Motor Yacht: a yacht with more cockpit space than deck space.
• Sportfish or Sport Fishing Yacht: A yacht used for fishing with a large cockpit, storage space, and the ability to handle rougher seas. These can also be referred to as Flybridge Sportfish or Sportfish Express and are built for longer durations out on the water.
• Convertible: a yacht that combines features of a standard motor yacht with a sportfish yacht to have entertaining space when you need it, and also fishing space when you need it.
• SUV: a yacht that combines features of a standard motor yacht and sport yacht.
• Tri-Decks : a superyacht with three levels of staggered, enclosed living space.
• Expedition Yachts: a large yacht with a deeper displacement hull for more stability and comfort during longer-range trips.

Another defining trait of yachts, as mentioned earlier, is their high performance, which means they have a powerful engine or a large sail. All of the known features of yachts point to them needing to have a certain amount of space and being of a certain size.

In order to further understand what yachts are, let’s take a look at the beginnings of this luxury vessel.

The name “yacht” comes from the Dutch word “jaght” meaning hunter and also refers to a Dutch sailing vessel. After one of these vessels was used to carry King Charles the Second back to England, he and his brother had a pair of yachts made.

These yachts, built for recreation and used for racing, became popular among the nobility, who many had yachts of their own built. While such recreational vessels had been built even before King Charles the Second used one to return to England, the name yacht was the one that stayed.

In the beginning, yachts were vessels for transporting important people, and luxury was just the result of accommodating people of such stature. Eventually, yachts became synonymous with luxury, and people started building them for such purposes.

In the 20th century, the rapid development of technology and production gave the yacht an expanded purpose, becoming a status symbol for wealthy people.

These days, the cost for yachts has become lower, which makes them more accessible to a wider range of people. However, the ceiling for luxury has become so much higher with private yachts going as high as millions of dollars in value.

Types of Yacht

Yachts being as ambiguous as they are, there are many types. The types of yachts below do not belong to a single category, but they are common types that you would do well to remember to avoid getting lost in the vast sea of definitions for yachts.

The sailing yacht is powered by large sails. The Dutch jacht was itself a fast sailboat used by the Dutch navy for chasing down pirates. This high performance is something that the yacht inherited and is expected of yachts to this day.

These days, sailing yachts can still be found, despite the prevalence of motorized boats . There are also hybrid types, yachts that have both sails and boat motors .

The motorized yacht is simply a yacht with an engine. However, there is nothing simple about the level of performance expected of such a vessel. Owing to the yacht’s history of being used for racing, even motorized yachts are expected to be speedy.

Yacht engines need to have a certain degree of power and handling that allows yachts to retain high performance even when they are as large as they are. The size of such engines and the space needed to fit these engines make the yacht even more costly.

The name superyacht is somewhat self-explanatory in what it is. Whatever a yacht is, make it more. Superyachts are bigger, more luxurious, and are able to accommodate more people aboard. This also means a higher level of requirement for their crews, as superyachts are professionally crewed.

Superyachts are expected to be at least 24 meters or around 79 feet long. Most superyachts are longer than this, though, and reach lengths of over 100 meters. The longest superyacht at the moment is the Azzam at 180m or 590ft, which is valued at around 600 million dollars.

Another type is the megayacht that is expected to be at least 50m in length. For some reason though, the Azzam is officially a superyacht as it is up to the manufacturer or owner to decide whether their vessel is to be considered a superyacht or a megayacht.

Difference Between a Boat and a Yacht

To further illustrate what yachts are, let’s compare them with boats. We’ll take a look at three points to compare them.

There is no minimum size for boats, although they are usually 15 to 30 ft long.

While yachts do not have an actual size limit nor an actual size requirement, as long as they can entertain guests, they can be called a yacht. However, yachts are expected to be at least 10m or 33 feet long to have enough space for the level of performance and accommodation expected of a yacht.

Terms such as superyacht and megayacht help to identify the size range of such vessels but are usually not required. Whether a yacht is private or commercial is usually the more pressing matter.

As mentioned above, superyachts need a professional crew. This is due to the superyacht requiring a certain level of performance and accommodation.

As far as boats and yachts are concerned, they are similar. They both do not require a crew, professional or otherwise, and can even be sailed single-handedly. While yachts need to be able to entertain, accommodating as many as eight guests is manageable by as few as two or three people.

Boats are transport vessels, and as long as they can carry what they need across the water, they are boats. The facilities they have on board are dictated by what is necessary for them to fulfill their purpose.

Yachts, however, need to both transport and accommodate people. Luxury and recreation are perhaps the most defining characteristics of such a vessel. There is no true requirement other than to entertain, but the facilities aboard are all for satisfying the said requirement.

A Florida man, desperate for his girlfriend and cops not to access his phone, jumped into the ocean to avoid giving up his passcode and fled arrest after being grilled by police while out on a boat.

Bodycam footage from April shows two female Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission (FWC) officers questioning a man — who identified himself as AJ — and his girlfriend on a boat somewhere in the waters near Key West in a YouTube video posted last week.

In the video, which has garnered over a million views, AJ argues with the officers and his girlfriend over the phone and proper identification and becomes increasingly agitated before finally jumping into the ocean.

Questioning what would happen if he just “swims away,” he then led the cops on a seven-minute pursuit back to shore before getting arrested.

The incident began when the two officers told the couple they were searching the area for a different vessel in their jurisdiction, but it happened to AJ and his girlfriend on a boat with some code violations.

The cops quickly discover that neither AJ nor his unidentified girlfriend have IDs on them, and the boat he’s operating is breaking a number of codes.

Proclaiming he did nothing wrong, he slowly becomes angered with the cops and asks them if they’re “just out here trying to catch people breaking laws on the water?”

“Obviously, we’re addressing violations because we’re cops and that’s what we do,” one of the officers replied.

As AJ becomes more agitated with the officers, they ask him if he “has a warrant” out.

“Usually, when people start acting like that, it is because they’ve got a warrant,” one of the officers tells the ticked-off boater while his girlfriend repeatedly tells him to “calm down.”

“You need to relax… you’re freaking out,” his girlfriend tells him.

Growing anxious, AJ asks the officers what will happen if he “jumps in the water and swims away.”

“I’m going to follow you,” one officer replies. “I’m telling you, you’re not free to leave.”

The video then cuts to the officers looking at a blurred-out computer screen, showing AJ had a warrant out.

As tensions peak, AJ tells the officers he will “swim home.”

“AJ, I swear to f—ing god, if you jump in that water, I will be gone tomorrow,” his girlfriend threatens.

She then asks her boyfriend to unlock his phone so she can get his boss’s phone number.

“What is your password for your phone,” she demands of AJ while he argues with the police.

AJ then moves to the back corner of the boat, telling the cops he’s not going to “jail today.”

His girlfriend then gets in his face with his phone in her hand, again telling him to unlock it so she can help.

Not ready to go to jail or give his girlfriend access to his device, AJ jumps into the water.

The officers then try getting him back into the boat to arrest him, but AJ insists he’s “not resisting,” all while his girlfriend continues to demand his phone’s passcode.

After a minute of arguing with the cops, the anxious boater begins swimming away.

“We are done after this, I’m telling you,’ His girlfriend shouts at him. “I’m leaving!”

AJ then takes a leisurely 7-minute swim back to shore with the two FWC officers following him.

Before reaching land, the officers jump out of their boats and slap cuffs on him.

They then escort him to the shoreline, where another cop waits for him before the video ends.

It’s unclear what charges AJ was facing after the strange ordeal.

The Post reached out to the FWC for clarification on the incident.

Commenters on the video pointed out that AJ appeared to be more worried about his girlfriend getting into his phone than being arrested.

“Bro wasn’t worried about jail he was worried about that phone being unlocked,” one user wrote.

“Bro would rather take a felony than let his girl access his phone,” commented another.

“The way he just took off into the sea as she demanded the password to his phone,” another user commented.

Now known as the village of Rupite, Heraclea Sintica has a history that spans centuries. King Philip II of Macedon founded the city in southwestern Bulgaria between 356 B.C. and 339 B.C. The metropolis was then destroyed by an earthquake in 388 A.D. and subsequently abandoned around 500 A.D.

11 Full-Size Liquids You Can Actually Take Through Airport Security

For nearly two decades, travelers have become accustomed to packing miscellaneous liquids into their carry-on bags according to the TSA liquid limit.

Created by explosive experts, the international guideline known as the 3-1-1 rule requires airline passengers pack their liquids inside 3.4-ounce containers that can fit into one quart-size bag. Any larger liquids—including toothpaste, shampoo , face wash, and sunscreen —must be packed in checked luggage .

However, with the advent of computed tomography (CT) scanners at airport checkpoints, officers can now use 3-D imaging to detect the hazardous liquids the rule was originally designed to limit. As a result, some airports have become more lenient with the policy, with some European airports even eliminating the restrictions last year.

But the roll out of the new 3-D imaging machines has been slow. The UK originally had a goal of removing the liquid cap by June 1, but the restrictions were re-instilled across the country after major airports flagged their technology wouldn’t be ready in time.

Here in the US, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) tells Condé Nast Traveler they "anticipate the limit on liquids will be lifted in the coming years.” But for now, the TSA liquid limit remains in effect.

That said, there are certain liquids above the 3.4-ounce limit that can be packed in a carry-on—in particular, those that are medical necessities.

To transport those approved oversized liquids, travelers should inform the security officer of the items before the screening and place them in a separate bin. No matter what the exception is, “The final decision rests with the TSA officer on whether an item is allowed through the checkpoint,” the government agency says on its site .

On a recent trip, when extra bottles of Dove deodorant pushed me past the TSA liquid limit the officer apologized that their airport had “such old machines.” One by one, I handed him each item I was willing to part with. To my surprise, he put each one back in the tray and stated out loud with a knowing look, “That one is medicine. And that one is medicine too…” until I was able to bring everything with me.

While not every officer will be as empathetic, it's also important to note that the rules are constantly changing. Hand sanitizer had been an exception to the 3-1-1 rules through the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, but now must also comply with the restrictions.

Prescription liquids, gels, and aerosols

Medication that has been prescribed specifically for you is perhaps the most common item that qualifies as an exception. TSA recommends that it’s clearly labeled so there's no question about what is inside.

Depending on the situation, medication may be screened visually or with an x-ray machine. It may also be tested for traces of explosives. In some situations where the officers aren’t able to properly screen the item, you may be asked to open the container for a vapor analysis, per the TSA site.

In cases where you would like to make sure the medication isn’t opened or X-rayed, simply inform the TSA officer. “Additional steps will be taken to clear the liquid and you or the traveling guardian will undergo additional screening procedures, which may include AIT screening, a pat-down, and screening of your carry-on property,” the site says.

Note that prescription wet pet food does not count as an exception to the TSA liquid rule, even for service animals.

Liquid medications and contact lens solution

In general,  liquid medications that are not prescriptions and  contact lens solutions are limited to 3.4 ounces, but TSA does allow “larger amounts of medically necessary liquids, gels, and aerosols in reasonable quantities for your trip,” with the caveat you must declare them to security officers first.

Breast milk and infant formula

Passengers traveling with infants have enough to worry about on their flights—and being able to provide the little ones with the proper nourishment should not be one of those concerns. Technically, TSA categorizes  breast milk and  baby formula as “medically necessary liquids.” The child doesn’t need to be present for the exception.

In order to expedite the process, TSA suggests—but doesn't require—that the liquids be transported in clear and translucent bottles, so that they can be screened by the Bottle Liquid Scanners. (Those in pouches may not be able to.) While there is a chance you may be asked to open them, nothing will ever be placed in the liquid. The agency also adds that the screening process shouldn't affect the formula, but if you prefer they not be x-rayed, alternative testing means can be taken.

Baby and toddler food and drinks

In addition to breast milk and formula, food and drinks for babies and toddlers are also allowed, including puree pouches. They also technically fall into the “medically necessary” category.  Water for babies is also allowed in “reasonable quantities.”

Liquid teethers

TSA also recognizes how important teethers are to babies and has “ liquid-filled teethers ” specifically called out as an item that can be brought through the security check.

Ice, gel, and freezer packs and other accessories to medically necessary items

Ice, gel , and freezer packs that are required to keep other medically necessary items in their required cool state are also exceptions, no matter what state they are in (solid ice or liquid gel). Frozen and slushy items may be subject to additional inspections. Additionally, IV bags, pumps, syringes, or other accessories to medical supplies are also allowed.

Spare your eggs the pressure of being crammed into a 3-1-1-approved bag. Even with liquid yolks, they can be taken through TSA security, but may need to be separated from the carry-on bag for proper inspection to make sure they're genuinely what they're cracked up to be.

Live fish and coral in water

Assuming your  live fish in water needs more than 3.4 ounces of water, this is another exception to the rule, as long as they’re in a clear transparent containers and properly inspected by the TSA officer. Live coral in water was also recently added to the list. Certain airlines will also permit live lobster in a clear, plastic, spill-proof container.

Biological specimens

Liquid exceptions can be made in the name of science.  Non-infectious specimens in preservative solution , which can include formaldehyde, ethanol, isopropanol, or other alcohols, can be carried through if it’s for scientific research. But they’ll need to be very specifically packed.

There can be up to 30 milliliters of free liquid in a heat-sealed inner plastic bag and then no more than one liter in the outer packaging, which needs to be marked: "Scientific research specimens, 49 CFR 173.4b applies." (Specific instructions for the regulation are  here .)

Non-spillable wet batteries

Certain portable electronic devices may need non-spillable batteries with absorbed electrolyte, like a gel cell, absorbed glass mat, and the like. As long as the equipment is protected against accidental activation or evolution of heat, and the battery's voltage is 12 volts or less with less than 100 watt hours, then it makes it cut.

Duty-free purchased items in officially sealed bags

Shopping at the airport? Those liquid souvenirs can be taken home as well, as long as they are properly sealed by the cashier in a  security tamper-evident bag (STEB). The system was “developed to allow an exemption" to liquid volume rules for items purchased at duty-free airport retailers or on board an aircraft, according to the  International Civil Aviation Organization .
