Phantom Termiticide Insecticide

Phantom is an indoor/outdoor termiticide and insecticide that kills termites, ants, cockroaches, and now bed bugs, through a powerful non-repellent active ingredient. Pests can't even detect Phantom, so they walk right over it and then spread it to other insects hidden behind walls or in their home colony, killing every other pest they come in contact with. Phantom is virtually odorless, clear in color and provides superior pest control with a long-lasting residual.

Phantom Termiticide Insecticide

How Phantom Insecticide & Termiticide Works

Phantom Termiticide/Insecticide is a non-repellent liquid concentrate that is diluted with water and usually applied with a pump sprayer. Phantom contains the active ingredient Chlorfenapyr, which belongs to a relatively new class of insecticides called pyrroles that are produced from microbes. Pyrroles do not metabolize into active insecticides until after they enter the host target pest. Chlorfenapyr disrupts the production of ATP in the part of the cell that turns food into energy, causing cellular death and ultimate mortality. Because this process is slower than other modes of action, Phantom can have a transfer effect similar to that of baits on social insects like ants, cockroaches, and termites.

Insects do not smell, taste, or avoid applications of Phantom. This means that Phantom can be used in conjunction with baits (do not spray on top of baits). Phantom also eliminates pest build up in one area, preventing pest avoidance of treated areas. The residual of Phantom will last for 30 days or longer. Phantom also has a high potency, so fewer applications are needed for effective treatments.

Phantom Target Insects

Ants, termites, bed bugs, centipedes, beetles

INSECTS CONTROLLED:  termites ( Reticulitermes  spp. ( R. flavipes, R. virginicus, R. hageni, R. tibialis, R. Hesperus), Coptotermes  spp.  (C. formosanus),  and  Heterotermes  spp.  (H. aureus) ; ants (acrobat, Argentine, carpenter, odorous house, pavement, pharaoh’s, pyramid); beetles (Asian lady, confused flour, darkling larva (yellow mealworm), saw-toothed grain); bed bugs; boxelder bugs; centipedes, cockroaches (American, Asian, brown-banded, German, Oriental, and smokybrown); European earwigs; house crickets; house flies; paper wasps (not a knockdown agent); pillbugs; spiders (black widow, cellar); silverfish

Target Uses

Phantom is a Termiticide and insecticide labeled for indoor (follow the label carefully) as well as outdoor use. It combines nonrepellency, superior control, long-lasting effects, and the ability to control populations faster than baiting systems—all in a low-dose, virtually odorless formulation. Phantom can be used as a soil drench, wall foam or as a general use spray as desired.

Phantom is a popular choice for ants and cockroaches because it can be used in conjunction with baiting. Phantom is also ideal for bed bug control because it is non-repellent and effective for pyrethroid resistant strains of bed bugs. Because of its long residual and efficacy with these and other common household pests, Phantom is an excellent choice for apartments, hotels, or similar commercial properties.

  • Phantom also comes in a convenient aerosol formulation for smaller jobs or crack and crevice treatments.

Though Phantom is labeled for use as a soil drench for subterranean termites, products such as Termidor SC are more cost effective and last longer in the ground.

ACTIVE INGREDIENT: Chlorfenapyr 21.45%

Application Instructions

For termite treatments, use 4 gallons of 0.125% solution per 10 lineal feet of a 6 in. by 6 in. trench, establishing a continuous treated zone between the wood and other cellulose material in the structure and the termite population(s) in the soil. For pre-construction treatment to be covered by concrete slab, use 1 gallon of 0.25% finished solution per 10 square feet. Apply using a coarse spray nozzle and low-pressure spray (less than 25 psi). See our article How to Do a Termite Treatment for more details on liquid termite treatments.

Phantom may be converted to a foam for treatments in structural voids. Foam applications to voids above soil should be done with a wet foam (10:1 expansion ratio or less). See mixing table on the product label for dilution rates.

For general pest control indoors, applications should be made to breeding areas, nesting sites, hiding places, runways, and other places where pests are found or likely to infest. For use with only low-pressure directed spray application equipment. Use a 0.5% solution for crack and crevice or spot applications. Do not apply more than once every four weeks.

  • One 21 oz. bottle makes 28 gallons of 0.125% solution for termites or 7 gallons of general use spray for cockroaches and ants.
  • A 75 oz. bottle makes 100 gallons of finished solution for termites or 25 gallons of general use spray.

Standard Application Dilution rates / Mixing Ratios:

  • 0.75 fl. oz. (22 mL)/gal. of water – 0.125% - most termite applications
  • 1.5 fl. oz. (44 mL)/gal. of water – 0.25% - small volume termite applications
  • 3.0 fl. oz. (88 mL)/gal. of water – 0.5% - general pest applications
  • Use 4 gallons of 0.125% solution per 10 lineal feet for perimeter termite treatments
  • One gallon of 0.5% solution for general pest applications covers approximately 1,000 square feet

Phantom is for use in the following areas:

Pre-construction and post-construction termite treatments in and around residential, commercial, and industrial buildings; inside houses, apartments or other residential structures, meat, poultry and egg processing and packaging plants, the food/feed and non-food/feed areas of food-handling establishments and commercial, institutional and warehousing establishments; food service, manufacturing and processing establishments such as restaurants, cafeterias, supermarkets, mills, processing plants, bakeries, breweries, dairies, meat slaughtering and packing plants and canneries; schools, groceries and supermarkets, restaurants and cafeterias, hotels and motels, hospitals and nursing homes, warehouses and industrial buildings, laboratories, zoos, pet shops, computer facilities, sewers

Cockroaches: Phantom is effective against American, Asian, brownbanded, German, Oriental, smokybrown, and other cockroach species. Use a 0.5% dilution. Apply dilution as a coarse, low pressure spot or crack and crevice spray to areas where these pests normally inhabit or are likely to infest.

Limited spot treatment of Phantom dilution can be made to surfaces beneath cabinets, spaces between equipment or expansion joints, surfaces behind sinks, lockers, water pipes, cabinets, or other areas where cockroaches may hide. Reapply, if needed, every 4 weeks or more.

Ants:  Phantom is highly effective against household and structure-invading ants, including the following species: acrobat ants, Argentine Ants, Carpenter Ants, odorous house ants, pavement ants, Pharaoh's ants, pyramid ants, and other species.

Apply crack and crevice or spot treatments of a 0.5% dilution to areas of known or suspected ant activity. Where possible, apply Phantom directly to ant nest(s) or nesting site(s) or ant-infested wood or structural voids. Reapply, if needed, every 4 weeks or more.

Bed bugs:  Do not make surface applications to mattresses. Mattress treatments must be confined to the seams, folds and edges only. Remove linens and wash before reuse. Allow to dry before remaking bed. Use an approved product for other treatment areas. Not recommended as the sole protection against bed bugs.

Exterior application of Phantom is limited to spot and crack and crevice treatments where pests enter around doors, windows, eaves, attic vents, and holes in exterior walls where utilities enter. Apply a maximum of 1.2 fl. oz. of dilution per 2 square feet.

The secret behind the success of Phantom termiticide-insecticide lies in it’s cutting edge chemistry.  It’s active ingredient, chlorfenapyr, is totally undetectable. Phantom Termiticide & Insecticide

General Information Once ingested, Phantom attacks pests from inside their own bodies by preventing their cells from generating energy. This leads to paralysis, and, ultimately, death.  However, this process is not instantaneous, which means Phantom will not cause an accumulation of dead pests in a particular spot. Instead, they continue to behave normally and go about their regular routines for a short time before dying. There is nothing about their behavior to tip off others to Phantom’s presence.

Other products are far less stealthy, and, as a result, far less successful. Phantom is effective on ants and roaches, the two biggest nuisance pests. But the new expanded label also covers bed bugs, beetles, centipedes, flies, scorpions, and wasps. With Phantom at your side, you’re ready for practically any general pest challenge you encounter. With bed bugs making a big comeback, in housing and in the media, you can now treat them with Phantom—the only nonrepellent labeled for control of bed bugs. This is an especially significant since some research is indicating pyrethroid resistance in bed bugs.  And, the newly expanded label for Phantom means it can be used to control many nuisance pests, stored product pests and occasional invaders that infest structures, including:

* ants (acrobat, Argentine, carpenter, odorous house, pavement, pharaoh’s, pyramid) * beetles (Asian lady, confused flour, darkling larva (yellow mealworm), saw-toothed grain) * bark scorpions * bed bugs * boxelder bugs * centipedes * cockroaches (American, Asian, brown-banded, German, Oriental, and smokybrown) * European earwigs * house crickets * house flies * paper wasps** * pillbugs * spiders (black widow, cellar) * silverfish

** Phantom is not a knockdown agent.

Since Phantom can be reapplied every 28 days, and to outside entry points (doors, windows, eaves, etc.), Phantom is an extremely flexible, service-schedule-friendly component of any GPC program.  Because Phantom is the only nonrepellent liquid labeled for food-handling areas it opens up a wealth of new business opportunities for PMPs in any establishment where food is handled, served or stored. And since Phantom can be used with baits, it can be used to make existing accounts far more effective too. Phantom can also become an excellent addition to any commercial program as well:

* Bakeries * Breweries * Cafeterias * Canneries * Diaries * Hospitals * Hotels * Nursing Homes * Packing Plants * Pet Shops * Processing Plants * Restaurants * Schools * Supermarkets * Warehouses

Phantom Insecticide Chlorfenapyr

Phantom Insecticide Chlorfenapyr

Frequently bought together.

Phantom Insecticide Chlorfenapyr

Phantom Insecticide Chlorfenapyr, manufactured by BASF, is a easy to use termiticide and non-repellent insecticide that kills termites and other general pests like cockroaches in and around residential, commercial, warehouses, or other establishments.

Unlike other suspended concentrate insecticides, Phantom Insecticide Chlorfenapyr is intended for precise spot treatments both indoors and outdoors. This unique feature makes this product the only known non-repellent insecticide that can be used with baits and other integrated pest management products.

Phantom Insecticide Chlorfenapyr is proven to be effective against a variety of ant species and has a low-odor making it ideal for food/feed areas of food-handling establishments. The secret behind this product's success lies in it's active ingredient, chlorfenapyr, which is undetectable to insects. Pests can't smell it, taste it, or, most importantly, avoid it. As a result, they unknowingly contact and ingest it as they go about their routine activities.

Tools Needed

Phantom Insecticide should be mixed in a hand-pump or backpack sprayer.

Perimeter treatment with Phantom

  • Step 1: Determine how much Phantom you will need by first calculating the square footage of the area you wish to treat. To do this, measure and multiply the area length times the width (length x width = square footage). Phantom can either be mixed at a 0.125% (0.75 fl. oz.) dilution concentration or 0.25% (1.25 fl. oz.) dilution concentration in a gallon of water to cover 1,000 sq. ft for termite control. For general pest control, Phantom should be applied at a 0.50% dilution (3 fl. oz.) in a gallon to cover 1,000 sq. ft. For example, if you measured 5,000 sq. ft. of area for general pest control, you would need to mix 15 fl. oz. in 5 gallons of water.
  • Step 2: In a sprayer tank, fill halfway with water and then add the appropriate amount of Phantom based on your calculations. Add the remainder of the water, close the sprayer and agitate until well mixed and you will be ready to spray.
  • Step 3: Apply the Phantom mixture with a low-pressure directed spray or use a pin tip nozzle for crack and crevice applications. For barrier treatments, apply a band 10 feet wide around the perimeter and up to 3 feet high on a foundation. Use all around structures and in cracks and crevices where bugs may harbor. Repeat applications as needed every 28 days for continued control.

Where to Use

Phantom Insecticide can be used as a crack and crevice spot treatment and it can be used in garages, it can be used in homes, it can be used in nursing homes, food handling establishments, and many different areas. Indoors you should focus treatment around cracks and crevices, cabinets and baseboards.

When to Use

Use Phantom when you are experiencing an insect infestation and want a professional product that is proven to keep pests away. Prime times for pest infestations are in the warmer months between Spring and Fall.

Safety Information

Phatnom Insecticide Chlorfenapyr is safe to use around children and pets when applied according to the product label instructions. Always wear the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when mixing and applying this product.

Do not allow people or pets to enter treated areas until the spray has completely dried.

Special Considerations

Phantom Insecticide Chlorfenapyr cannot be used for broadcast applications.

Exterior application of Phantom is limited to spot and crack and crevice treatments where pests enter around doors, windows, eaves, attic vents, and holes in exterior walls where utilities enter. Apply a maximum of 1.2 fl. oz. of dilution per 2 square feet.

  • Asked by Gerardo 09/08/2009 Q Is Phantom Insecticide safe around kids and babies? A Yes, Phantom is safe while kids/babies and pets are in the house. Phantom is only strong enough to kill small insects. It is a good idea to keep pets and children outside or in another room while treating and then allow about 30 minutes for the products to dry. Once dry, it is perfectly safe for children and pets to re-enter the living space. Of course you should always store the products just like any other cleaning chemicals, out of reach of children and pets. • Asked by Cybele 09/18/2009 Q How effective is Phantom Insecticide for bed bug control? I am experiencing a problem with bed bugs and recently had my apartment treated with Phantom. The technician treated not only cracks and floorboards, etc, but sprayed my walls as well. I'm reading the info on this website which says only to treat seams, not walls. Is treating the walls safe and effective? How many treatments will I need? Apartment was sprayed today and I have seen several live bed bugs and have felt several bites. Shouldn't it kill them immediately? A Phantom is quickly becoming the new preferred treatment for bed bugs.  It leaves a long term residual that has shown to kill bed bugs long after you initially treat.  However, it is not an immediate kill.  When a bed bug crosses over an area that has been treated with Phantom, it picks up the product on its body, but it can take days to kill the bed bug.  This is why you will still see bed bugs and still may get bitten, but the bed bug will die.  Phantom is very popular now because bed bugs build up resistance easily to certain products and Phantom is a product that they have not shown resistance to yet.  Any good company should treat every two weeks for at least two cycles.  It could take more than two treatments depending on the severity of the situation.  I cannot comment on the companies interpretation of the instructions, but treating cracks and crevices, baseboards, and other areas will ensure that when the bed bugs come out of hiding that they will cross a treated barrier.  You should consider our Bed Bug Treatment Kits .  They have a very high success rate and will save you lots of money over hiring another exterminator if they are not successful. The amount of 1.5 oz per gallons of water more pertains if you are using Phantom for a termite treatment.  You should use 3 oz per gallon of water when applying for roaches or other general pest control insects.

Roach Control Articles

Termidor is definitely the most popular termite treatment product available.  Phantom was made more for indoor pest control and perimeter pest control treatments.  Since Termidor is not labeled to treat around the indoors for pest control, Phantom was made to serve that purpose.  Although Phantom is labeled for termites treating, it does not last nearly as long as Termidor does in the ground and it is also much more costly per finished gallon than Termidor is.

  • Asked by Sharin from Hartford Ct 09/30/2013 Q Can Phantom be used on carpets and chairs? A Phantom Termiticide is not labeled to be used as a broadcast on open carpeted areas.  You should try to keep applications of Phantom Termiticide to small spots and cracks and crevices around the room, do not spray over entire surfaces where people come in frequent contact. It can be applied to the seams and folds of mattresses and upholstered furniture underneath the cushions Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 32 of 34 people found this answer helpful.
  • Asked by Shane from Ca Santaclara 06/19/2013 Q Can baseboards be treated with phantom in residential and commercial buildings A Yes, Phantom can be used indoors along baseboards, cracks, crevices, and entry points. This product dries clear and is odorless. Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 29 of 32 people found this answer helpful.
  • Asked by Tx12354 08/26/2010 Q How long will it take for the bed bugs to die? I have sprayed my house with Phantom insecticide. I also sprayed Bedlam on the mattress, bed frame and spring box. It's been more than a week now, and I am still getting bites. One thing I did not do is buy an encasement. I will do spot spraying again in a week. How long until I should expect to see the results? A Phantom can take up to two weeks to actually kill the bedbugs after they come into contact with treated surfaces. Bedbug treatments should be done every 7-10 days until you do not receive a bite for 30 days. Most people do end up doing between 3-5 treatments. The key to successful bedbug elimination is thoroughness. We strongly recommend purchasing mattress and boxspring encasements . • Asked by Kyle 01/16/2011 Q What is the shelf life of Phantom? I purchased the 21 oz. bottle of Phantom Termiticide/Insecticide about 6 months ago. I am wondering whether or not it has a shelf life. If so, how long? I sprayed once when I received it, and I haven't sprayed since until today. I'm questioning the product's current strength. A Phantom will last for up to 3 years in the bottle as long as it has been stored out of direct sunlight and out of extreme temperatures. Do not apply Phantom more than every 4 weeks. Application and dilution ratios will vary according to the pest you are treating, please take a look over the product label for more information. • Asked by Thomas from Conyers,ga. 05/14/2015 Q HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE PHANTOM TO MAKE A NOTICEABLE DIFFERENCE ON INDOOR SPRAYING? I SPRAYED 4 DAYS AGO ATTEMPTING TO ELIMINATE A GERMAN ROACH PROBLEM. I USED PHANTOM MIXED WITH GENTROL IGR CONCETRATE. I MIXED IT TO THE RECOMENDED LEVELS. A Phantom can take up to two weeks to actually kill bugs after they come into contact with treated surfaces. Phantom offers a delayed kill that gives insects time to get back to the nest and infect other insects with the insecticide. Phantom is also a non-repellent insecticide which means that sensitive insects like roaches can not tell that it is there and they readily cross over the treatment area. Roach treatments should be done every 4 weeks until you do not see any more roach activity. Most people do end up doing between 3-5 treatments. We would also recommend incorporating an IGR (insect growth regulator) such as Gentrol IGR to stop the reproductive cycle of the roaches. Roaches exposed to the Gentrol IGR will become adults incapable of reproducing, thus ending the cycle of an infestation. You may mix Phantom with the Gentrol IGR with a gallon of water to perform the application of both products at the same time. • Asked by Jennifer from Clearwater Fl United States 11/11/2014 Q Ant problems I have an ant problem. I see them around the fireplace and inside edges of the house. I have tried Demon, Vipor and Bifen without success. A All of the products listed will kill ants that come in contact with the treated area, but will not stop the issue. You want to use a product like a bait or something the ants will bring back to the nest. Phantom is a great product for insects that colonize. Pests can't even detect Phantom, so they walk right over it and then spread it to other insects hidden behind walls or in their home colony, killing every other pest they come in contact with Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 20 of 23 people found this answer helpful.
  • Asked by Rich from Columbus, Ohio 05/15/2012 Q Does mixing Gentrol IGR concentrate with Phantom reduce Phantom's "nonrepellency" for cockroaches? We hopefully have a light/moderate roach infestation - we maybe see 2-3 roaches a week. We are already planning on using Advion Roach Bait Gel, but we'd like to also use Phantom and Gentrol IGR concentrate as a liquid mix to do baseboards, under appliances, sink cabinets, attic areas, and basement bandboards. However, here's a technical question: 1.) Will adding Gentrol IGR to Phantom, make the Phantom detectable to the roaches and make them not want to touch it?, 2.) Will spraying the Gentrol IGR / Phantom mix near our Advion Roach Bait drops cause the roaches to avoid the bait?, and 3.) We won't spray the mix on top of the Advion drops, but pretty near it (e.g., along the bottom of sink cabinets, yet put Advion bait 1 foot above this area around the sink plumbing?). Could you advise? A Adding Gentrol IGR to Phantom will not change the non-repellency of Phantom. You should not apply the Advion and the Phantom/Gentrol in the same exact places. Keep the Advion up high around counter tops, in cabinets and drawers and in other cracks or crevices where it would not be appropriate to spray. Keep sprays around baseboards, moldings, door frames, window frames and under appliances. The Advion Bait will not be contaminated as long as you do not spray it directly with the Phantom/Gentrol dilution. Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 19 of 19 people found this answer helpful.
  • Asked by H8pest from [email protected] 12/17/2013 Q How is Phantom different from Termidor? Don't they both have the same active ingredient as well as shared target pest? It seems like maybe Phantom is better indoors and Termidor is better outdoors but what is the reasoning for that? A Termidor and Phantom are not the same in many ways. Phantom is an indoor and outdoor use product which is highly used for roach and ant infestations but does cover a small range of other pests. Phantom has the active ingredient Chlorfenapyr 21.45%, which is different from the Termidor which has Fipronil 9.1%. Termidor is labeled for OUTDOOR use only.  It can only be used indoors to spot treat termite or insect activity inside wall voids (for example when treating a live termite infestation in a wall void) .  It cannot be used indoors for ant or pest control other than inside wall voids. Termidor can only be used twice a year around the foundation of the home and only sprayed 18" up and 18" out when treating. Termidor is primarily used for Termite and ant infestations and has a better transfer than Phantom. Both products are similar in that they are non-repellant transfer insecticides.  Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 17 of 18 people found this answer helpful.
  • Asked by Chwang from Lincoln,ne 09/15/2011 Q Is 3oz/gal Phantom dilution also effective against termites if sprayed? Your instruction calls for a 1.5oz/gal Phantom dilution for termite treatment, 3oz/gal dilution for general pest control as a spray. A You do not want to use 3 oz per gallon for termites, because that will kill them too quickly.  Phantom is a non-repellent and if applied too strongly, the termites will not be able to carry the product back to the colony.  Termites should always be treated at 1.5 oz. per gallon of water. Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 17 of 19 people found this answer helpful.

When used as directed Phantom is a very safe product, only containing enough of the active ingredient to kill insects, not enough to harm mammals. As with any chemical, it important to follow all label instructions and precautions and keep the product out of reach of children and pets. We recommend that you read through the product label and the MSDS to learn all safety precautions and instructions.

  • Asked by Vangie 05/20/2011 Q Any side effects to my kids under the age of 8 using Phantom insecticide spray for bed bugs in the house? And how safe is it to my kids who are 7, 5, and 1 yr. Thank you. A Phantom is safe to use around children of any age as long as you follow the Phantom product label . Make sure all children are out of the area that is being treated and they can return as soon as the area is completely dry. Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 14 of 16 people found this answer helpful.

Phantom is a great choice for "social" insects or those insects that congregate together for nesting and feeding. Phantom offers a delayed kill that gives insects time to get back to the nest and infect other insects with the insecticide. Phantom is also a non-repellent insecticide which means that sensitive insects like roaches can not tell that it is there and they readily cross over the treatment area. Phantom is usually used indoors for current infestations. Exterior applications are limited to spot and crack and crevice treatments around door frames, window frames, eaves, attic vents, and holes where utilities enter into the structure.

Cy-Kick CS is micro-encapsulated and offers a faster knockdown of insects and can be used in more places than the Phantom. Cy-Kick is a great choice for outdoor perimeter control of roaches and many other insects. You can use the Cy-Kick-CS to treat around your fence deck and lawn. You may also want to consider what is bringing the roaches to your home. Take a few minutes to read through our article on Integrated Pest Management . This article can help you make a few changes to your yard and home that could stop the roaches from being attracted to the area in the first place.

  • Asked by Bill 06/08/2010 Q Where can Phantom be sprayed? Can Phantom be applied to dresser drawers ,wood bed-frames and the perimeter of the room where carpet meets the wall? The label only has instructions mostly for termites. A The Phantom label states that you can spray the product in or onto nesting sites, breeding areas, hiding places, runways and other places where the pests are known to infest. The label also states that you can use Phantom on the tufts, seams and folds of mattresses, making it very useful for bedbug treatments. You should try to keep applications to small spots and cracks and crevices around the room, do not spray over entire surfaces where people come in frequent contact. This information can be found on pages 9-11 of the Phantom product label . Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 11 of 13 people found this answer helpful.
  • Asked by Ken from Sacramento, Ca 01/25/2014 Q What is the reason why I can't use Exciter with Phantom? I have read the Labels of both Phantom and Exciter in addition to other sources which state "not to use Exciter as an additive with non-repellent insecticides", but have been un able to determine why. Is Exciter a repellent or does it interfere/interact with the active ingredient in Phantom? A Mixing a non repellant like Phantom with a synergist like Exciter will cause the Phantom to become somewhat of a repellant and also speed up the knockdown which is counter productive because it doesn't encourage the domino effect as well as good as non repllants. Non repellants have a slower kill which allows it to spread much more thoroughly throughout insect populations through the transfer and delay effect. When you add a synergist to a non repellant you loose that added benefit. Was this answer helpful to you?   Yes No 10 of 10 people found this answer helpful.
