MarineTraffic is a ship-tracking and maritime information service that was founded by Dimitris Lekkas in 2007. It is widely recognised as the world’s most comprehensive maritime database and the service is able to boast more than six million unique monthly users , as well as more than one million registered account holders. Essentially, the service was set up by Lekkas because he had an existing interest in computers and ship spotting and had become interested in the practical uses of AIS vessel tracking technology. Little did he know, he was about to create one of the most important transport databases in the world . The MarineTraffic service is available to use for free , although a paid version also exists, adding more advanced features. MarineTraffic makes use of AIS vessel tracking technology to record 800 million vessel locations each month, while its database also includes information on ships, such as when and where they were built.

How Does MarineTraffic Work?

The MarineTraffic service makes use of AIS tracking technology to provide information about the identification, course, speed and current location of vessels. From there, locations can be overlaid onto Google Maps , and, as a result, users can use the service to track the movements of ships and other vessels in real-time.

Additionally, some information surrounding ship locations is self-reported by those aboard. This information is then used to provide a more accurate and up-to-date live map of vessel locations.

Aside from tracking vessel positions, MarineTraffic also provides background information on vessels, such as where they were built, when they were built, their IMO (International Maritime Organisation) number, how much they weigh and even photographs of them. What is AIS Technology?

AIS stands for ‘ automatic identification system ‘ and refers to a tracking system that is used on ships and VesselFinder . Since 2004, it has been compulsory for all passenger ships of any size, and all international voyaging ships with a gross tonnage of 300 or more, to be fitted with an AIS transponder, which is able to transmit and receive AIS data.

The AIS transponder transmits GPS information , as well as a host of additional data, which is then received by AIS receiving stations. The MarineTraffic service makes use of more than 3,000 of these stations , positioned all around the world, allowing the service to track positions, identify vessels, plot courses and even monitor speed.

In many ways, the MarineTraffic AIS technology can be considered similar to the flight radar technology used by services like Flightradar24 , in order to track aircraft. In that particular case, the AIS technology is replaced by ADS-B technology, which works in a similar way and is again assisted by volunteers, with information being picked up by ADS-B receivers or receiving stations instead of AIS receivers.

Other information on the site

While the information on the site largely revolves around picking up these AIS signals for tracking purposes, background information about the vessels, photographs of ships and an abundance of other information is also added and moderated by volunteers, who make up the core of the MarineTraffic community.

Meanwhile, in addition to the automatic location tracking that is provided through the use of AIS technology, vessel positions are also often self-reported to MarineTraffic. This can help to make tracking even more accurate and is stored as historical data within the database . It can subsequently be referred to for statistical analysis, emergency response purposes, accident investigation, and even to assess the effects of weather on speed.

Who Uses MarineTraffic?

An online ship tracking service may seem like the sort of platform that would only appeal to the most dedicated ship spotters , and it may not surprise you to learn that the site’s founder, Dimitris Lekkas, places himself within this category. However, in reality, the service has a much wider audience than that.

In fact, in the years since its initial launch, MarineTraffic has grown into an important tool for both business and research purposes , while the platform is also used by governments, trade organisations and emergency services. Of course, it remains a valuable tool for maritime professionals and hobbyists as well .

The core user group includes maritime professionals, ship spotters and other hobbyists . Many of those within this group subscribe to the paid version of the service and dedicate their free time to voluntarily help the community, upload photographs and moderate content uploaded to the site.

Business and Trade

Another key use for the MarineTraffic service is related to business and trade. Its primary use here is to track the progress of cargo being shipped overseas. Furthermore, the website includes its own business directory, helping to put buyers and suppliers in contact with one another.

MarineTraffic also enjoys popularity with maritime researchers and those interested in AIS technology. Indeed, the service has set up the MarineTraffic Research Network, which is designed to assist academic institutions, research foundations and individual maritime researchers . Interested parties can even apply for special academic accounts.

Security and Emergency Services

One of the more surprising ways in which MarineTraffic is used is as a tool to assist emergency services with situational awareness and accident investigation . Moreover, the platform has also been used by some national governments for security purposes because it allows them to monitor activity in and around their coastal areas.

Other Users

Aside from the groups mentioned, MarineTraffic has also grown into an important resource for journalists and media organisations , who have used it to inform reports on ISIS and the migrant crisis. In addition, there are also casual users who may utilise MarineTraffic to track friends or family members aboard a ship or vessel.

How Do You Use MarineTraffic?

If all of this seems complicated and overly technical so far, the good news is that the actual MarineTraffic service itself is very easy to use , even for those with no technical knowledge of AIS technology whatsoever. Additionally, the core features can be accessed from a range of different platforms . The main website is, in itself, the service’s web platform and from there, users will be able to search for, identify and track vessels. However, in addition to this, two separate web apps exist. The first of these integrates with the services seen on the web platform, while the other is designed for boaters and hobbyists.

Web Platform

The main MarineTraffic web platform features a Live Map showing the positions of vessels. Users can click and drag the map to move around the globe, highlight vessels on the map to find out more information, or use the ‘+’ an ‘-‘ symbols to zoom in or out, while the left-hand side of the screen has a range of more advanced options.

At the top, the magnifying glass symbol opens up the search function, allowing users to search for either a vessel or sea port , or search for a specific map location. Meanwhile, the filter symbol allows users to filter the vessels displayed on the map based on ship type, capacity, current status and more.

Finally, the symbol showing three boats is the ‘My Fleets’ option. By accessing this menu, users have the option to create a fleet and add ships to it, making it easier to track multiple vessels at the same time.

A basic MarineTraffic account is free and can be used for an indefinite period. However, MarineTraffic is categorised as a ‘freemium’ service because a paid premium account opens up a range of extra features. Among these are the ability to create larger fleets, use custom fleet icons, access wind forecasts and view a 30-day voyage history.

Mobile Apps

Aside from the main web platform, the MarineTraffic service also has two separate mobile apps , which are available for Android and iOS devices. The first of these, MarineTraffic Ship Positions is similar to the web platform, but is more mobile-friendly than using the website on a mobile browser.

All account holders can make use of the app, including those with a basic free account, those with a paid premium account, or those with a special research or academic account, but the app itself is not free, and a small fee is required to download it. The features available within the app will depend on the account type held by the user.

Further to the main MarineTraffic mobile app the platform also has a separate mobile app, known as MarineTraffic OnCourse . This app is intended for those interested in sailing or yachting or those who are in charge of larger vessels, and provides a more advanced range of features. For example, the app allows boaters to self-report their location from within the app and easily upload photos and other information about their vessel.

The free version is not too bad, but not great. Shows outdated ship position info. For example, I was tracking container ship CMA CGM Saigon. This app had ship position 13 days old. Marine traffic had AIS position 2 minutes old. Not worth $10 to me for more accurate ship position. I was looking to see if i could find something better than Marine Traffic, guess there isn't one.

Fantastic App!!

I was recently in Savannah & LOVED watching the gigantic container ships/cargo ships/tankers going by River St. & I kept asking everyone I’d meet there asking them how do you know when they’re going to pass by & a worker at the visitor center finally told me about this app & I downloaded it right away & haven’t missed a vessel yet!! It is the answer! It is perfect. You can zoom out to Tybee & beyond to see specifically what is coming & going. You won’t be disappointed. And it’s free. Thank you so much, VesselFinder Lite!

I downloaded this app for fun thing it would be a nice thing to do when I’m bored. Turns out the app is a scam. I download what seemed to be a FREE GAME and was instantly charged 9$ that I can’t get back. After this I at least hoped the app would make it worth it but it was terrible. Nothing was up to date and half the ships didn’t have pictures of them so it was a waste of time. Do not buy this app if you want to save your time and money.

Paris is once again the center for the biggest summer sporting event that comes every four years on the sports calendar.

The 2024 Paris Olympics will put the City of Light at the center of the sports world for the third time in the city's history, as athletes from all around the globe gather to compete while representing their countries and territories in the world's biggest sporting event.

And these Paris Games are set out to be historic — from several angles.

The 2024 Games ties Paris with London as the cities to have hosted the Summer Games the most (three times each). It will be the first time that the opening ceremony of the Olympics will take place outside of the Olympic Stadium, as the parade of nations will take place along Paris' famous Seine River. Breaking (i.e. break dancing), will make its Olympics debut, while surfing will take place 9,000 miles away on the island of Tahiti.

And then there is of course the history that the United States is looking to continue setting, including Kevin Durant looking to become the first male Olympian to win four consecutive gold medals in basketball.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has selected its host sites and countries for the Olympics through 2034, with news dropping on Wednesday that host site bids were awarded to the French Alps and Salt Lake City, respectively, for the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympics.

The next Olympics will occur in 2026 in Italy, between the two cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo in Italy.

The next Summer Games will return to the United States in 2028, giving Los Angeles its third Olympic Games, tying it with Paris and London. It is the first time that Los Angeles will host the games since 1984, when Carl Lewis matched Jesse Owens' Olympic record for four gold medals in one Olympic Games.

It will be the ninth time that the United States has hosted the Olympics: five Summer Olympics and four Winter Olympics. (The 2034 Salt Lake City Olympics will give the U.S. 10 total, including a fifth Winter Games).

Following L.A., the Summer Olympics will then head to Brisbane, Australia in 2032. The 2032 Summer Games will mark the third time overall that Australia has hosted the Olympics and the first time in 32 years, when the games took place in Sydney in 2000.

Grounding and subsequent loss of commercial swim event support vessel Channel Queen

MAIB investigation report 7-2024: Channel Queen

On 20 July 2023, the UK registered motor vessel Channel Queen grounded as it passed over the wreck of the steam ship Varvassi near the Needles lighthouse, Isle of Wight, England while escorting a relay swim event around the island. Channel Queen was then deliberately beached in nearby Scratchell’s Bay.

The passengers and crew abandoned Channel Queen to its rigid inflatable boat and a liferaft and were then transferred to a Royal National Lifeboat Institution lifeboat. Channel Queen was subsequently declared a total loss.

The investigation found that there was no charted navigational passage plan; effective use was not being made of the available navigation equipment to execute a safe passage; the qualified skipper had departed the vessel to a kayak before Channel Queen grounded; and the vessel was being driven by Channel Queen’s owner, who was insufficiently qualified to be in command.

Safety issues

the risks associated with ineffective passage planning were not considered before the voyage commenced. The skipper’s passage plan did not provide a sound basis for the safe circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight while providing swim support close inshore.

the skipper and owner prioritised the swim event over the safe navigation of the vessel. When the vessel grounded, the skipper had left the vessel after a very brief handover to the owner, who was insufficiently qualified to command and was attempting to deal with multiple distractions single-handedly.

the skipper disembarking to the kayak had become a normalised procedure during previous swim support events. Both the owner and the skipper had overlooked the requirement for the vessel to always remain under the command of an appropriately qualified crew member when underway.

Recommendations

Swimon Proprietary Limited has been recommended (2024/123) to implement a process to ensure that any vessel it operates or engages from a third party to support its events is crewed by sufficient numbers of personnel who are suitably qualified for the intended area of operation and that these personnel remain on board at all times when underway.

The company has also been recommended (2024/124) to review the method of navigation passage planning used on board any vessel it operates to ensure that recommended good practice is followed, including making appropriate use of charts and charting systems.

There plenty of MLB action on Friday, July 26 including a contest between the Texas Rangers and the Toronto Blue Jays at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. EST and will be broadcast exclusively on Apple TV+ . Fans looking to watch this MLB game can do so with an Apple TV+ subscription. Apple TV+ offers a 7-day free trial for new users and is $9.99 a month afterward.

The game is not available on your local cable provider or MLB.TV. Instead, the Rangers vs. Blue Jays game will be streamed exclusively on Apple TV+ as part of a Friday Night Baseball doubleheader.

Judge turns down MLB players’ union request to confirm arbitrator decision against Bad Bunny firm

NEW YORK (AP) — The Major League Baseball Players Association lost in its attempt to get a federal judge to confirm an arbitration decision denying an attempt by an agent at Bad Bunny’s Rimas Sports firm to block his decertification by the union.

U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman wrote Thursday that the arbitrator’s decision was not a final ruling in the case and not subject to judicial confirmation. The discipline remained in place while an appeal is heard by a different arbitrator.

The union revoked the certification of agent William Arroyo and denied the applications for certification by Rimas co-owners Noah Assad and Jonathan Miranda on April 10, citing alleged violations of agent regulations. The three were prohibited from reapplying for certification for five years, and the union issued a $400,000 fine and said certified agents could not associate with Rimas, the three individuals and any associated entities.

Rimas was founded in 2021 with the goal of representing Latin players.

The players’ association claimed Rimas employees had been “offering and providing gifts to players they did not represent including, but not limited to, VIP concert tickets to `Bad Bunny’ concerts and suite access to a Phoenix Suns game.” The union also said the agents violated regulations “by providing, causing to be provided, or promising to provide, money and/or other things of value to players for the purpose of inducing or encouraging players to use their services as agents.”

Arbitrator Michael H. Gottesman on April 19 denied a request for a temporary restraining order against the union while arbitrator Ruth M. Moscovitch hears an appeal by Arroyo, Assad and Miranda on the merits of the discipline. In addition, Moscovitch denied a stay motion on July 7.

The union filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan for a motion to confirm Gottesman’s decision.

“Arbitrator Gottesman’s three-page, emailed decision is not a confirmable award,” Liman wrote in a 17-page decision. “The ruling, by its terms, did not finally and conclusively resolve all of the issues submitted by the parties as part of the arbitration.”

Rimas Sports, under its corporate name Diamond Sports LLC, sued the union in federal court in San Juan, Puerto Rico, accusing it of violating Puerto Rico’s general tort claim and tortious interference with its contracts to represent players.

Rimas declined comment on the decision, spokeswoman María de Lourdes Martínez said. The union did not have an immediate response on a request for comment.

Who doesn’t love a mystery? For the first seven days, you’ll receive a cryptic challenge in the form of an image, which you must decipher to figure out how to complete. You’ll also have the entire second week to figure out the seven clues and complete the hidden challenges for even more rewards.  

To unlock the MC Championship Cape, you must complete a total of 15 challenges, one of which is solving the mystery above! I wonder why they chose that number... In any case, make sure you join the party and leave no block unturned! 

WATCH THE ENDER CUP 

On July 27 at 6pm BST / 1pm EDT / 10am PDT , it’s time to kick back and watch other Minecrafters compete! The coveted Ender cup is up for grabs, and 40 Minecraft streamers are coming together to battle for it in the most thrilling challenges MCC has to offer, themed after 15 years of Minecraft! 

In this nail-biting competition, ten teams consisting of four Minecrafters each will play through eight unique games designed to test a variety of skills. Competitors must prove their parkour, PvP, puzzling, and building skills as well as their knowledge of Minecraft. And of course, teamwork plays a key role throughout the competition. Once all eight mini-games are completed, the top two scoring teams proceed to the final duel, where one team will prove to the Ender Dragon that they are worthy of the cup! 

How to watch 

MCC will be streamed by each participant on their own channels, so you can choose between 40 different perspectives! Check out the MCC web app on the day of the event for the full list of available streams as well as the live score. You can also watch on our Twitch and YouTube channels. The creators and teams taking part will be revealed on July 18 and 19, so keep an eye out for that on @mcchampionship_ ! You can also head to endercup.live for more information on both events.

The U.S. women’s soccer team will get things rolling in group play in the 2024 Olympics today when they face Zambia hours before the Opening Ceremonies. The match is available to watch on multiple streaming services for free.

The quarterfinals will begin on Aug. 3, the semifinals will be on Aug. 6, the Bronze Medal Game on Aug. 9 and the Gold Medal Game on Aug. 10.

Thursday’s USA-Zambia soccer match will broadcast live on USA Network and Telemundo at 3 p.m. Eastern (9 p.m. Central European Summer Time). Fans who have parted ways with their local cable provider can catch this game for free by utilizing streaming alternatives including FuboTV and DirecTV Stream , which both offer a free trial. The USWNT is a very young squad, but they’re led by familiar names like Rose Lavelle and Crystal Dunn. They’re captained by Lindsey Horan.

It will also be Emma Hayes’ first major tournament as head coach.

The USWNT has won won four gold medals, one silver and one bronze in their past seven Olympic Games, and are looking to add to that total in France in 2024 at the Paris Olympics. With a powerful midfield group of Lavelle and Horan, there’s reason for optimism with this group.

The matchup vs. Zambia should be a good start for Team USA headed into further group stage games.
