Does Jeff Bezos's New Yacht Feature a Sculpture of Lauren Sánchez?

The world's largest sailing yacht appears to have a figurehead that resembles Sánchez.

The yacht, which is named "Koru" and reportedly cost around $500 million, features a wooden figurehead of a woman that seems to be based on Sánchez. In addition, the sculpture is wearing the symbol for Koru, which is Māori for "loop or coil" and represents creation.

Per the Encyclopedia of New Zealand , "The koru, which is often used in Māori art as a symbol of creation, is based on the shape of an unfurling fern frond. Its circular shape conveys the idea of perpetual movement, and its inward coil suggests a return to the point of origin. The koru therefore symbolises the way in which life both changes and stays the same."

Bezos has previously posted about the symbol of koru, including a photo in his New Year's Day post in 2022, where he wrote, "the new year is also a great time to take stock and focus on personal growth, renewal, rebirth, and paying careful attention to each moment of your life. The good and the bad. All of it. Celebrate and grow." You can scroll to the last slide in here:

Bezos and Sánchez have been spotted this week on the three-mast yacht off the coast of Spain. At 417 feet, it is the largest sailing yacht in the world, and it is trailed by a 246-foot support vessel called the Abeona.

Jeff Bezos' fiancée Lauren Sanchez says she's 'flattered' — but the female figurehead sculpted on the front of his superyacht isn't her

  • Jeff Bezos' fiancée is debunking speculation that a sculpture on his yacht is her.
  • Lauren Sanchez told Vogue the figurehead on the yacht is actually of Norse goddess Freyja.
  • Sanchez said she was "flattered" by the comparison, but joked it'd need larger breasts to be her.

Insider Today

It turns out the female figurehead on Jeff Bezos' yacht isn't his fiancée, Lauren Sanchez.

Bezos ' yacht — named "Koru," which refers to a symbol of new beginnings in the Māori language — boasts a statue on its prow of a woman with long hair and a flowing dress.

The figurehead has drawn comparisons to Sanchez, but Sanchez set the record straight in a Vogue article published Monday.

Related stories

"I'm very flattered, but it's not," she told Vogue. The sculpture is apparently of the Norse goddess Freyja, one of Bezos' favorite figures from mythology.

The article continues: "'If it was me…' Sánchez joked, and made a gesture of having larger breasts."

Bezos and Sanchez have had quite the summer adventure onboard the yacht since they were first spotted onboard in May.

The 417-foot vessel is believed to be the largest sailing yacht in the world and reportedly cost $500 million.

Sanchez also told Vogue about Bezos' proposal . He hid the ring under her pillow after a starlit dinner, according to the article.

News broke in May that Bezos and Sanchez were engaged after four years of dating.

$500m price tag and bronze statue similar to his girlfriend: What we know about Jeff Bezos’s wild superyacht

Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend Lauren Sanchez have been spotted relaxing on the Amazon founder’s new superyacht, which is reportedly worth almost $500m.

The 59-year-old billionaire was photographed aboard the 417-foot-long vessel as it set sail along the coast of Spain on Monday, 15 May.

The couple’s maiden voyage comes nearly five years after the vessel was first commissioned in 2018 for half a billion dollars. The yacht – named the Koru after the Maori word for “new beginnings” – comes complete with three decks and a pool.

In photos obtained by the Daily Mail , Bezos was seen shirtless on the megayacht’s sundeck, while Sanchez was dressed in a pink bikini and white cover-up as the pair enjoyed the sunshine.

Bezos reportedly arrived to his yacht via helicopter, making use of the vessel’s helipad, after being flown to Mallorca on a private jet.

The 250-foot tall boat even came equipped with a figurehead that bore a striking resemblance to Bezo’s 53-year-old girlfriend. The polished wooden sculpture, which sits at the prow of the yacht, depicts a woman carved in the style of a Roman goddess, complete with long hair and a flowing gown.

Koru, previously known as Y721, is the tallest sailing yacht in the world with three masts measuring more than 230 feet, according to Boat International . It reportedly cost Bezos $485m.

The boat’s exterior has a classic design of a black hull with a white superstructure. Although the brand-new vessel doesn’t come with a helipad, the Amazon founder reportedly purchased a support yacht, worth $75m specifically to land his helicopter.

The Koru was constructed by Dutch yacht maker Oceano near Rotterdam in the Netherlands. It caused quite a scandal in February 2022 when the vessel nearly required the historic Koningshaven Bridge to be dismantled because its masts were too tall to pass under the bridge.

Indeed, the vessel is officially the tallest yacht in the world, standing at more than 230ft (70m), and is the length of four blue whales at 416ft (127m) - one of just four yachst in the world to boast a length of greater than 100m.

When Oceanco requested the city of Rotterdam dismantle the 100-year-old bridge – known to locals as “De Hef” – outraged citizens planned to throw rotten eggs at the superyacht. The yacht maker rescinded its request and ultimately hauled the 417-foot vessel to a separate shipyard to install the masts.

The clever design of the three masts, which see the yacht powered by kinetic energy, mean Bezos does not need an entire crew to staff the vessel - instead the Koru can be manned by one person (although no doubt the billionaire will have staff on hand for more of his voyages).

Guests visiting Bezos aboard his new superyacht are able to arrive via helicopter thanks to the vessel’s helipad, while other transport on board includes a fleet of cars, jetskis and smaller speedboats.

The yacht reportedly costs $25m a year to maintain, according to Page Six , but Bezos has more than enough money to cover the maintenance – his net worth is an estimated $141bn.

Jeff Bezos completes $500 Million Yacht with Lauren Sánchez sculpture

Jeff Bezos seemingly added a sculpture of Lauren Sánchez to the front of his $500 million yacht. He must really love her.

Burtland Dixon

Lauren Sánchez, Jeff Bezos

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has added a unique touch to his extravagant $500 million yacht, named Koru. The 59-year-old billionaire has commissioned a wooden sculpture in the likeness of his girlfriend, Lauren Sánchez, to adorn the prow of the vessel. The sculpture, spotted during their recent sail around the Spanish island Mallorca, features Sánchez wearing the symbol for Koru—a Māori term meaning loop or coil—as a necklace. The symbol represents new beginnings, positive change , and personal growth, People shares.

While Bezos has not provided any official comment on the sculpture, its resemblance to Sánchez is evident. The expressive display of affection showcases Bezos' devotion in a rather unconventional way. The wooden artwork reflects the couple's connection to the symbol of Koru, which holds special significance to them.

In addition to the Sánchez-inspired sculpture, Bezos' yacht boasts luxurious amenities such as an on-deck pool. The vessel also includes a smaller dinghy, known as a “pet yacht,” which serves as a helipad and storage for various recreational items. This smaller yacht follows Koru and provides added convenience for the couple's excursions.

The construction of Koru has been underway for several years, and its recent appearance off the coast of Mallorca marks its inaugural sail. Bezos and Sánchez were photographed enjoying their time onboard, embracing the joys of their patient wait for completion.

The addition of the Lauren Sánchez sculpture further enhances the yacht's grandeur, symbolizing a new phase of life and the hope for a bright future. While Bezos remains tight-lipped about the artistic portrayal, the sculpture is a testament to the couple's shared journey and their appreciation for Māori traditions.

Jeff Bezos has once again proven that money simply cannot buy taste through his addition of a new figurative sculpture attached to “Koru,” his $500M “superyacht” spotted off the Spanish coast this month. I must admit that the boat itself is quite sexy considering the price tag, but the fantasy figure installed on its prow, which could be a grotesque commemoration of his girlfriend-turned-fiancée, journalist and helicopter pilot Lauren Sánchez, leaves a lot to be desired.

The figure’s face undoubtedly resembles that of Sánchez, but that’s where the artistry ends and the horror show begins. Appearing to be carved from wood and polished to a sheen, the figure’s body has both arms, feathered wings, and clothed quads that transition bizarrely into … betta fish fins? Your guess is as good as mine, honestly, and I’m taking suggestions. At least the sculptor was conscious enough of female anatomy to include slightly protruding nipples poking through the tight dress that’s pretty much vacuum-sealed over the figure’s torso. I’m sure those are powerful headlights for this 417-foot-long luxury boat.

While it’s unconfirmed that the sculpture is modeled after Sánchez, its appearance coincides with the news of her engagement to Bezos that became public this week.

The sculptural figure appears to be wearing a spiral emblem pendant on a necklace that references the yacht’s name, “Koru,” referencing the Māori symbol that resembles an unfurling fern frond and signifies creation and perpetual movement. The Koru is also said to represent new life, a meaning that Bezos seems to be taking to heart since his 2019 divorce from his first wife, philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott, and his 2021 step-down as CEO of Amazon followed by his first venture into outer space in a penis-shaped rocket mocked by everyone in the world.

While it’s not unusual to witness an upper-middle to upper-class man buying a boat to appease some sort of wealth-induced midlife crisis, I think we could all do without the polished boob-y wooden sculpture, and that $500M could have easily been used to ameliorate the working conditions at Amazon warehouses without making so much as a pin-prick in Bezos’s net worth. I guess it’s kind of sweet, in its own grotesque way, that Sánchez is leading Bezos into the next phase of his life through this really poorly executed artistic gesture. I may be giving out too much credit, though.

One reply on “What’s That Grotesque Sculpture on Jeff Bezos’s Megayacht?”

No mention that there is a long history of figureheads of ships and this one is in some way part of that tradition? https://www.dailyartmagazine.com/art-of-ships-figureheads/ The artistry and paternalistic nature of these figureheads could be debated throughout time, but the Bezos boat is not unique in having a figurehead per se.

Jeff Bezos Commissions Sculpture Of Girlfriend Lauren Sanchez On His $500 Million Superyacht

jeff bezos yacht with sculpture

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery they say, and Jeff Bezos , 59, is doing just that for his girlfriend, Lauren Sánchez , 53.

Bezos had a wooden sculpture, in the likeness of the former anchor, placed on the prow of his superyacht.

The yacht is reported to have cost $500 million and according to Boat International , is said to be record-breaking in size, known to be the largest sailing yacht in the world and the longest built in the Netherlands.

50 BEST CELEBRITY BIKINIS SLIDESHOW!

It made its sailing debut on the waters last month and was made specifically for the billionaire tycoon.

Bezos named his yacht, Koru, which in Maori means new beginnings. Ironically, the Amazon founder’s superyacht forced the partial dismantling of a historic bridge in Rotterdam. De Hef was opened in 1927 and many locals were understandably unhappy about Bezos’ disturbance.

“That is really going a bridge too far,” politician Stephen Leewis tweeted.

Bezos and Sánchez met when the 59-year-old was still married to his ex-wife  Mackenzie Scott   and caused quite a scandal when the current couple’s affair was discovered. Bezos and Scott were married for 25 years before filing for a divorce in 2019. They share three sons and one daughter.

Despite their questionable foundation, the Amazon CEO and former Fox   anchor seem to be very happy in their relationship.

For Bezos’ birthday this year, Sánchez posted a heartfelt Instagram message saying, “You have shown me that no great love is not bravely fought for. Thank you for always being by my side and for being the most loving and supportive partner.”

By contrast, Sánchez’s theme appropriate Oscar de la Renta mega-gown was a real switch-a-roo for her. While her night before and night of looks were created by the same design team, they couldn’t have been more different. Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim are to thank for that — their design aesthetic for the dress, they told Vogue , was “elevated” and “polished.” The black velvet corset and full stained-glass-looking voluminous (an understatement) skirt was made of actual plexiglass shards — dangerous!

An inside look at jeff bezos’ $500 million superyacht and what it costs to keep it afloat.

Cliché but true, the second-richest man on the planet, according to Forbes , owns the tallest sailing yacht in the world . In fact, the 417-foot Koru is so big, it has its own 250-foot support vessel .

Priced at $500 million, the Koru hit the sea for the first time in 2023 and has since ferried Jeff Bezos and company around the globe. Complete with three massive 229-foot masts, it can reach a top speed under sail of 20 knots, according to the New York Post — which is approximately 23 miles per hour.

Made for a group, up to 18 guests can set sail on the yacht, allowing Bezos to bring family and friends on vacation with him. Here’s a look at the Koru’s extravagant features and how much it costs to operate his floating mansion.

Also take a look at Bezos’ mansion collection.

Key Features

As expected Bezos’ yacht is dripping with luxury. With a net worth of $203.8 billion — as of May 4, 2024, according to Forbes — he can afford to outfit the Koru with nothing but the best and he did just that.

The superyacht has three outdoor decks, with two containing swimming pools, according to the New York Post. It also features a cinema, several lounges and multiple business areas, according to Luxuo .

Highly personalized, the yacht is complete with a figurehead modeled after Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez. Even its masts are luxurious, as the Amazon founder chose in-boom furlers, which keep the canvases at the bottom of the mast above the deck, creating a pristine and spacious rope-free deck.

For You: Make Yourself Money Smart: 20 ChatGPT Prompts To Increase Your Wealth

Support Vessel

One of the most shocking features of the Koru is the fact that it requires its own support vessel. The $75 million Abeona features a helipad that Sanchez has been spotted using to park her personal helicopter, according to the New York Post.

Designed to carry extra gear, four jet skis, two fast launches and a dinghy were spotted on the Abeona during a 2023 trip to Mallorca, Spain, according to the New York Post. It’s also capable of lifting a small submarine, but Bezos isn’t believed to own one — at least not yet.

Additionally, the support ship has two extra staterooms, which can accommodate four guests. This could come in handy if Bezos wants to entertain a larger group than can fit on the Koru.

On-Board Crew

It probably isn’t a surprise that operating both the Koru and the Abeona is no small task. From staff to drive the boats and maintain them to caring for guests onboard, Bezos needs a small army at sea.

The Koru has a crew of up to 36 people, according to The New York Post. If you think that’s a lot, the Abeona requires up to 45 crew and support staff.

Annual Operating Costs

Purchasing the Koru and Abeona cost Bezos more than half a billion dollars, but his expenses didn’t end there. As you might imagine, the annual cost to maintain a superyacht and its own enormous supporting yacht is more than most people earn in a lifetime.

The Koru costs approximately $25 million in operating expenses per year, according to the Daily Mail . Much less, but still sky-high, Bezos spends around $5 to $10 million on annual maintenance costs for the Abeona, according to Super Yacht Fan ).

When their owners are on dry land, yachts have to find a parking space. However, even this doesn’t always come cheap for Bezos and the Koru.

In November 2023, the billionaire’s yacht arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but was too big to fit in the port with all the outer superyachts, according to the Daily Mail. Therefore, it had to be docked with cruise ships at Port Everglades, at a rate of $16,500 per week.

While one week of storage might be more than the average person can afford, picking up the tab for any number of weeks would clearly be no issue for Bezos. While his superyacht and the many expenses surrounding it are clearly astronomical, he’s still living well within his budget.

Lauren Sánchez Denies Jeff Bezos’ Yacht Figurehead Looks Like Her: 'Very Flattered, But It's Not'

The former TV anchor also said she still plans to visit space with an all-female crew in her December issue of 'Vogue'

Lauren Sánchez may be the apple of Jeff Bezos ’ eye, but apparently, she is not the subject of the famous statue aboard his $500 million megayacht.

Koru, the massive boat owned by Bezos, is home to a wooden sculpture that has been said to resemble Sánchez on the prow.

In a profile for Vogue ’s December issue, the 53-year-old former TV anchor revealed that the statue is actually of Freyja, the Norse goddess of love, fertility, war and gold.

Freyja is one of Bezos’s favorite mythological figures, Sánchez said. “I’m very flattered, but it’s not [me],” she added, suggesting that if it were modeled after her, the figure would have larger breasts.

Sánchez touched on a variety of topics in the wide-ranging interview, including her plans to visit space with an all-female crew in the near future.

Sánchez first announced her plan to visit space with an all-female crew in a 2022 interview with CNN. Originally, she hoped to launch into orbit in 2023.

Now, it appears the trip is planned for 2024. According to Vogue , Sánchez plans to board “the New Shepard” — a 60-foot, reusable suborbital rocket created from Blue Origin — with five other women, whose identities remain secret.

Annie Leibovitz

Sánchez also remains committed to her and her fiancé’s philanthropic endeavors, such as the Bezos Earth Fund and the Bezos Academy, according to Vogue .

“We really want to do the most we can with the dollars that we put into things,” Sánchez said. “It’s not about just giving the money away. It’s about being involved.”

Sánchez, the Vice Chair of  the Bezos Earth Fund , is described as being “dedicated to fighting climate change and the protection of nature” on the fund’s website. However, both Sánchez and her fiancé have faced criticism for their carbon footprint.

Responding to the critiques, Sánchez told  Vogue  that she and Bezos “are focusing on the long-term commitment to climate, and we’re extremely optimistic about it.”

In addition to opting for green aviation fuel whenever possible, Sánchez said Bezos’ yacht, Koru, can sail solely on wind power and has done so in the past. “We’ve done it and it is magical,” she told the magazine.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Sánchez is  “100 percent” looking forward to  her upcoming wedding, according to the profile. The two began dating in early 2019, shortly after they both divorced from their previous partners.

But so far, the couple has seemingly not gotten too far with wedding planning. “We’re still thinking about the wedding [and] what it’s going to be,” Sánchez said. “Is it going to be big? Is it going to be overseas? We don’t know yet. We’ve only been engaged five months!”

Meanwhile, Bezos suggested that he was not involved in the planning process. "Oh, God, no. Do I look that dumb?" he quipped.

Jeff Bezos's $500M yacht: World's largest, has Bezos's girlfriend's sculpture!

On Wednesday, Amazon's founder Jeff Bezos threw an engagement party to celebrate his companionship with fiancée Lauren Sánchez on his awe-inspiring yacht Koru in Italy, reported Page Six . They had gotten engaged in May 2023 . The function was attended by selected high-profile celebrities such as Bill Gates and Wendi Murdoch. The yacht has been the focal point of much intrigue and awe. Here's why.

One of its kind: It's the world's largest sailing yacht

Koru was formerly known as Y721, and per Boat International , it has the honor of being the world's largest sailing yacht as well as the largest yacht to have been built in the Netherlands . The site further explains the yacht's features- "[There is a] large pool on the aft deck, a seating area on the bowsprit, and multiple areas for relaxing across open decks."

It costs a mammoth $25M a year to run

Per a Hindustan Times report, the three-mast sailing and 417-foot-long yacht can reach a speed of 20 knots. To put this into perspective, it's important to note that large yachts usually average about 15 knots. The marvelous super boat costs about $25M a year to run and requires a crew of 40 sailors. It can accommodate about 18 people at a time.

Koru: Meaning of the word and significance

The word "koru" comes from Maori (an indigenous tribe in New Zealand ) art and is represented by a coil or loop, implying new beginnings, peace, and growth. Moreover, its spiral nature conveys the idea of perpetual movement. While sharing images from his New Year's party in January 2022, Bezos uploaded an image of the yacht and mentioned "personal growth, renewal, rebirth" in his caption.

It even has Sánchez's sculpture!

If all these stupendpus features weren't jaw-dropping enouh, there's more! Bezos's yacht has a magnificent wooden sculpture of Sánchez installed on the prow (the front part of the ship) and wears a necklace that contains the symbol of koru. Hard to compete with that level of love! To recall, the couple went public with their relationship in 2019, after Bezos's divorce from MacKenzie Scott.

Bezos' Rocket Company Will Send Tourists To Space This Weekend For First Time Since 2022

Blue Origin, the aerospace company owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos, will resume its space tourism program on May 19, sending a crew of six people into space in a first for the company in nearly two years.

Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket will launch out of Texas on Sunday, with a launch window opening at 8:30 a.m. CDT, the company announced Tuesday.

It will carry a crew of six civilians , including 90-year-old sculptor Ed Dwight , who made history in 1961 when he was the first-ever Black astronaut candidate in the U.S.—but was never selected to join a space mission.

Sunday’s launch will represent a reboot of Blue Origin’s space tourism program, which has been sidelined since August of 2022 after one of the company’s unmanned New Shepard rockets suffered a malfunction mid-flight, prompting a mishap investigation with Federal Aviation Administration oversight.

The launch would mark Blue Origin’s seventh crewed space flight, and would bring the total number of people that Blue Origin has successfully flown into space to 37.

Blue Origin offers a trip past the internationally recognized boundary of space at 62 miles above Earth at more than three times the speed of sound, allowing the crew to float weightless before returning to Earth.

How Can You Watch The Blue Origin Rocket Launch?

The launch will be livestreamed from the Blue Origin website beginning at 40 minutes prior to launch.

Key Background

Prior to the 2022 malfunction, the New Shepard rocket had taken six successful missions carrying more than two dozen passengers, including Bezos, “Star Trek” actor William Shatner and former NFL star and Good Morning America host Michael Strahan . After the malfunction, Blue Origin conducted an investigation with FAA oversight, which the FAA closed last September . The FAA found the cause of the mishap was likely the “structural failure of an engine nozzle caused by higher than expected engine operating temperatures.” The company was ordered to take 21 corrective actions. In December, it launched an unmanned rocket, taking a significant step toward resuming its space tourism activities. But the hiatus didn’t help Blue Origin’s efforts to keep up in the space race—in the two years it’s been grounded, competitor Virgin Galactic, founded by billionaire Richard Branson, has carried on uninterrupted with multiple successful commercial space flights.

$28 million. That’s how much the first-ever New Shepard ticket sold for at auction—though it’s not entirely clear how much a typical ticket actually costs, with some reports previously suggesting Bezos had been planning to charge upward of $200,000.

Surprising Fact

At 90 years old, Dwight is set to be the oldest man in space, beating out the former record-holder, Shatner, by a few months, according to NPR . His crewmates include venture capitalist Mason Angel, founder of French Brewery Brasserie Mont Blanc Sylvain Chiron, entrepreneur Kenneth Hess, retired CPA Carol Schaller and pilot Gopi Thotakura.

Forbes Valuation

We estimate Bezos’ net worth at $204.2 billion, largely through his stake in Amazon, which he founded in 1994

The first mini in May.

Jeff Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, stepped out together ahead of Monday’s Met Gala, attending a Monse bash at La Mercerie in NYC Sunday night.

While the Amazon founder, 60, kept it casual in a dark zip-up blazer over a white T-shirt, his bride-to-be went for a more risqué look, showcasing her curves in a corseted lace minidress.

Lauren Sánchez

The helicopter pilot, 54, let the daring design take center stage by keeping her beauty look simple, wearing her hair in gentle side-parted waves and opting for a nude lip and subtly smoky eye.

“It’s a mf smoke show [sic]!!” hairstylist Sophie Rose commented on Sánchez’s Instagram post showing off the look; “Gorgeous!!” added Paris Hilton.

The couple posed for photos with creative directors Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim, who design for both Monse and Oscar de la Renta — perhaps hinting at what the power couple might wear to the gala itself.

Other celebrities in attendance at the kickoff party included Doja Cat, Pamela Anderson, “RHONY” star Sai de Silva and more.

Bezos and Sánchez are set to make their Met debut at Monday night’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” -themed ball, as Page Six exclusively reported last month.

While the tech king has previously attended the star-studded event both solo and with ex-wife Mackenzie Bezos, it’ll be Sánchez’s first time.

Lauren Sánchez

She’s been embraced by the fashion industry as of late; Diane von Furstenberg and husband Barry Diller hosted her engagement party in November, which was attended by close friends Kim Kardashian, Oprah Winfrey, Chris Rock, Kris Jenner, Salma Hayek and more.

And Sánchez has turned plenty of heads with her recent style selections, having attended a White House state dinner in a daring Rasario dress , stepped out in Milan wearing a see-through lace Dolce & Gabbana gown and celebrated her birthday in a wild cutout Nensi Dojaka number .

All eyes will certainly be on Sánchez and Bezos at tonight’s ball.

Lauren Sanchez, Jeff Bezos, Camila Cabello, Sam Smith, Lil Nas X, and Many More Attended FKA Twigs' 2024 Met Gala After-Party

By Zachary Weiss

For over a decade, one thing has been for certain when it comes to the Met Gala after-party circuit: All roads lead to The Standard Hotel. The reason? Some may say it comes down to location — the hotel is situated atop The High Line Park in downtown Manhattan, far away from The Metropolitan Museum of Art — though the more likely reason? Anything goes at the Boom Boom Room, the hotel’s famed rooftop nightclub that has ascended into the collective consciousness of infamous after-hours hangouts mentioned in the same breath as Studio 54. If its walls could talk, there would be no shortage of famed foibles and once-in-a-lifetime gatherings that read like a celebrity mad-lib.

Last night, there were Lauren Sánchez and Jeff Bezos ensconced in a corner banquette. Sanchez had changed out of her glittering Oscar de la Renta gown and into a slightly more mobile strapless white number, fit for shimmying against the matching white leather seats. There was Pierpaolo Piccioli sitting a stone’s throw away from the couple, sharing a bottle of champagne with an entourage of Italians, while Sam Smith and Christian Cowan took to the dance floor.

From there onward, the floodgates—or perhaps garden gates—were open, with guests descending onto the dance floor to join the couple in their floral finery, including plenty of designers from Nell Diamond to Prabal Gurung to LaQuan Smith to Harris Reed , whose larger-than-life hat could be seen from just about any vantage point in the room.

The evening’s host, FKA Twigs, was easily spotted too, teetering through the party in a pair of sky-high Marc Jacobs platform heels and a nude sheath dress. It seemed as if she was taking her hosting duties seriously, gamely partaking in a vogueing competition and later joining the DJ booth alongside pals Camila Cabello and Lil Nas X, but around 2 a.m. the lighting shifted, bathing the room in pink neon as the songstress took to the bar-top.

“Everyone wants new music,” she told the crowd, lingering for a moment for a bit of suspense. "So I thought it might be fun to play a couple of songs here tonight.” After playing two new tracks, the names of which were unknown as she whispered them to the DJ nearby, the scene devolved into a sight more akin to a boiler room rave than a museum gala’s after-party. Gone so suddenly were the florals and taffeta and tulle, and here were the piercings and tattoos and, well, not much fabric at all. "You all did well just out here living your lives, and that’s all nice,” she added. "Everyone looks so beautiful, and everyone is just expressing themselves, and that makes me so happy.”

  • Megayachts have become a status symbol for the richest of the rich.
  • In recent years, Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have splurged on enormous boats.
  • These are the biggest yachts owned by tech billionaires.

The average Joe celebrating a personal renaissance after, say, the end of a long-term relationship or when approaching a fresh decade might commemorate it with an ankle tattoo or a sports car. But if you're a billionaire, you may instead spend hundreds of millions on a yacht .

A few years after he and his wife divorced, Jeff Bezos shelled out on a megayacht. Last year, Bezos debuted the 127-meter vessel "Koru," a Māori symbol that signifies a fresh start — perhaps referring to that with his fiancée Lauren Sanchez.

Earlier this year, just before his 40th birthday, Mark Zuckerberg became the rumored owner of a yacht originally built for a Russian oligarch.

Superyachts have increasingly become ultrawealthy status symbols , providing highly secluded leisure and networking sites. They are — even more so than real estate — the single most expensive asset you can own.

"It's a bit of a celebration of your success in life, of wealth," Giovanna Vitelli, the chair of the Azimut Benetti Group, the world's biggest producer of superyachts, told Business Insider.

While many tech billionaires have bought yachts, the richest of the rich, like Bezos, Zuckerberg, and Oracle cofounder Larry Ellison, have gone bigger. Their boats are virtual palaces at sea, decked with amenities like gyms, spas, pools, nightclubs, and movie theaters.

A look at these megayachts — broadly defined as over 70 meters long, mostly custom-built, and often costing nine figures — offers a glimpse into how the .00001% lives. It's something few others will ever get to experience. Even chartering a yacht of this size for a week typically costs upwards of $1 million.

One major thing that hundreds of millions of dollars can buy is privacy. There are likely yachts that have not been publicly recorded or registered — for example, Evan Spiegel is rumored to own the 94-meter megayacht Bliss. In an industry ruled by discretion , deciphering who owns what is typically an exercise in stringing together many clues.

Here are the largest yachts owned by tech billionaires, listed in order of length.

Jeff Bezos' fiancée, Lauren Sanchez, says she wasn't the inspiration for the figurehead of a woman on the Amazon founder's yacht, Koru, seen at left, with its support vessel, Abeona, seen at right. <a>Robino Salvatore/GC Images</a>

Jeff Bezos: Koru and Abeona

Amazon founder Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, made a splash last year as she crisscrossed the Mediterranean in her first summer at sea, with her 75-meter support vessel Abeona in tow.

The sailing yacht, which is hard to miss thanks to her massive size and unique design, was host to Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's famous friends . The couple held an engagement party on board, which reportedly drew guests including Bill Gates, Ari Emanuel, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Just a week later, they were seen on the streets of Dubrovnik, Croatia, with Orlando Bloom, Katy Perry, and Usher.

Even before her completion, Koru made headlines. She drew the ire of some Dutch people, who vowed to hurl eggs after she was announced a historic bridge in Rotterdam might be taken apart to allow the Oceanco boat through. Luckily, the shipyard made alternative plans, and an egg crisis was averted.

Among yacht world insiders , Koru is widely praised for her craftsmanship.

"I heard back in 2018 or something that somebody had ordered a classic sailing yacht," one superyacht expert told BI. "You order 125 meters, that's not really going to be classic. But it is. I think it's pretty cool."

Aerial shots of the yacht seem to show a pool on its main deck and a helipad. <a>Ruben Griffioen/SuperYachtTimes</a>

Mark Zuckerberg: Launchpad

Earlier this year, the yacht world was rife with rumors that Zuckerberg purchased Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht originally designed for a sanctioned Russian businessman.

The ship made her maiden voyage in March, going from Gibraltar to St. Maarten and mooring in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Little is known about her interior, but photos show a large swimming pool and helipad. Her price, too, has been kept under wraps but is said to be nine figures.

Eric Schmidt: Whisper

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt made waves last year when he agreed to buy the Alfa Nero , the yacht of a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. But he backed out of the deal following legal issues over her true owner. He quietly purchased Kismet instead. The 95-meter-long Lürssen-built boat was formerly owned by the Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan . Schmidt renamed her Whisper.

The ship can fit 12 guests and a crew of 28, according to Moran Yacht & Ship, which oversaw her construction. She features a master deck with a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace.

While her final sale price was not public, she was listed for 149 million euros (about $161 million at current exchange rates), and at a charity auction in January, one week aboard the ship went for $2.4 million, according to industry outlet Yacht Charter Fleet.

Barry Diller: Eos

Barry Diller , the chairman of digital media company IAC, co-owns the megayacht Eos with his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg , who is immortalized by a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong.

One of the largest private sailing yachts in the world, the three-masted Lürssen schooner measures 93 meters long. She took three years to be built before being delivered to Diller in 2009, and since then, little has come to light about her interior and features.

The power couple has hosted many celebrities on the Eos, which spends her summers crisscrossing the Mediterranean and New Year ' s Eve in St. Barts . Over the years, guests have included Oprah Winfrey, Emma Thompson, Anderson Cooper, and Bezos, leading some to believe she provided inspiration for his Koru.

Jim Clark: Athena

Netscape founder Jim Clark purchased the 90-meter sailing yacht Athena in 2004.

"I could easily have built a 50- or 60-meter motor yacht that would have had the same space as Athena, but I was never really interested in building a motor yacht," he told Boat International in 2016. "To my eye, she's one of the most gorgeous large sailing yachts, maybe the most gorgeous large sailing yacht in the world."

Athena has room for 10 guests and 21 crewmembers, and the only change Clark says he'd make in her design is adding more space for his kids.

"If I was forced to change something, I would convert the office on the lower deck into a children's room," he said.

The former Stanford professor tried to sell her at various points — listing her for $95 million in 2012 , $69 million in 2016, and $59 million in 2017 — but she has yet to change hands.

Laurene Powell Jobs: Venus

Steve Jobs' wife, investor and philanthropist Laurene Powell Jobs, inherited a nearly finished 78-meter yacht named Venus when the Apple cofounder died in 2011.

After spending years vacationing on Ellison's yachts, Jobs wanted one for himself. He designed Venus with French starchitect and decorator Philippe Starck , and she was worth $130 million at completion.

"Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum," Starck said of her design. "The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization."

Jobs and Starck began working together in 2007, the designer told Vanity Fair , and held monthly meetings over four years. Venus was delivered in 2012 to Jobs' specification: six identical cabins, a design to ensure spaces of absolute silence, and the most up-to-date technology.

"There will never again be a boat of that quality again. Because never again will two madmen come together to accomplish such a task," Starck told the magazine. Reporting from the Costume Institute benefit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art

  • May 7, 2024

Up the carpeted stairs, past the tuxedoed photographers, Anna Wintour stood at the top of the steps at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute benefit.

“Your royal highnesses,” Baz Luhrmann, the Australian film director, said as he approached Bad Bunny, Jennifer Lopez and Chris Hemsworth, who were standing in a receiving line with Ms. Wintour. The space had been transformed by greenery, filled with string musicians and dancers, creating a “Midsummer Night’s” dreamscape just off Fifth Avenue.

“How is it out there?” Ms. Wintour said, adding, “You look incredible.”

One by one, the stratospherically famous faces that captivate imaginations worldwide walked carefully up the stairs and stopped to talk to the row of co-chairs. (Zendaya, the fifth co-chair, did not make it to the perch.)

Tyla, the singer-songwriter, walks through a party in a long tan dress. She walks with two waiters on each side of her.

Ms. Wintour, the global editorial director of Condé Nast and the editor in chief of Vogue, had once again convened her starry annual bash, turning a soaring temple of the arts into a looking glass on our times — one reflecting a heady swirl of celebrity, commerce, fashion, beauty, aspiration, power, intrigue and bankable influence.

This year’s event drew around 400 people and raised about $26 million for the Costume Institute, which houses the museum’s costume collection — millions more than other major New York City galas. This year’s event was co-sponsored by Loewe and TikTok, which is currently facing a potential ban in the United States .

Welcoming a deep-pocketed tech company as a sponsor is not new for the Met Gala: Both Amazon and Instagram have bankrolled the Costume Institute exhibitions in years past. But the pairing of Vogue and TikTok, united in the race to capture our attention, suggests the video platform reshaping much of what we do and wear, also has a place in high fashion.

As Max Hollein, the director and chief executive of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, put it, “It was a kind of a natural progression to this year, from Instagram to TikTok.”

Guests were dressed in their best interpretation of the exhibition theme, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” and the dress code, “Garden of Time.”

Seth Meyers, accompanied by his wife, Alexi Ashe, said walking up the stairs this year actually felt very calming.

“We try to come in with not a lot of ego,” he said, adding that he often feels the photographers aren’t interested in him. “Even in the age of digital photos, you feel like they’re saving their film.”

Sarah Jessica Parker arrived with Andy Cohen, the Bravo host. Ms. Parker said she tried to pay close attention to the theme this year, and even read the 1962 short story that inspired it .

“I love the challenge of the theme,” she said. “I think sometimes it really eludes me, and sometimes it’s much more recognizable or I can make sense of it more quickly, but I liked the idea of paying attention.”

“Going with her is just a dream,” Mr. Cohen said. “It’s like being on a little puff of cotton candy all night. And she takes such care to do it right.”

As Ms. Parker and Mr. Cohen were making their way to the exhibition, Jeff Bezos stopped to compliment her dress, and the string of long pearls she was wearing. Standing with his fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, they recalled having met once, on a boat in Spain.

Ms. Sánchez and Mr. Bezos perused the “Sleeping Beauties” exhibition, hand in hand, stopping to look at the different displays. As she walked, her Oscar de la Renta dress made a sound on the floor that sounded a bit like squeaking ducks.

“You’re so loud,” Mr. Bezos said with a laugh.

Attendees packed into elevators and headed to the Charles Engelhard Court, where servers in white jackets with little green bows offered trays of champagne, sparkling water and cucumber margaritas.

Around the room, Matt Damon talked to Barry Diller. Ayo Edebiri chatted with Donald Glover. Kris Jenner arrived with her partner, Corey Gamble. She took a seat in a corner near a bronze sculpture. Ms. Sánchez, with a glass in hand, walked up to Ms. Jenner and gave her two kisses.

“Jeff,” Mr. Bezos said, introducing himself. “Nice to see you.”

Waiters with silver trays offered little bites of little things like tuna tartare on a rice crisp and hearts of palm with avocado purée.

Nearby, dressed in a tuxedo and sensible shoes, Stephen A. Schwarzman, the chief executive of the Blackstone investment group, sat alone on a bench, his phone’s speaker held up to his mouth.

On the other side of the room, members of the K-pop group Stray Kids picked off the appetizers as they stood together in a corner behind Lea Michele. Ms. Michele, who is pregnant, was seated at a table with Jonathan Groff.

“When I was pregnant with my son, it was 2020, and I was home wearing sweatpants and a T-shirt,” she said, “and now I’m in Rodarte at the Met. So it’s a very different pregnancy.”

Ms. Michele was particularly excited to see who was going to perform. “It’s my favorite part, obviously, as a singer,” she said. “It’s just so wonderful to get to have an incredible performer to do a private concert.”

Around 8 p.m., a door in the middle of the room opened and performers walked out to the sound of drumming, and danced throughout the space — a signal it was time for dinner.

“Let’s get going,” Mr. Luhrmann said to the crowd. “When Anna says get in, it’s time to get in.”

“I’m having the best night ever!” Ms. Sánchez said loudly. “I am having so much fun!”

Attendees were ushered off to a meal that included a medley of spring vegetables followed by a filet of beef.

Slowly, late arrivals made their way into dinner. Rachel Sennott walked in with Kylie Jenner. Kim Kardashian waved off more photos. Cardi B, surrounded by ushers carrying her dress, squeezed through two columns.

Inside, under candelabra entwined with floral arrangements, guests were seated around the Temple of Dendur, the Egyptian temple, where walls depict scenes of a king making offerings to the gods.

Our Coverage of the 2024 Met Gala

Zendaya Makes Two Arrivals: The actress wore a second John Galliano design to make a late (re)entrance at the Met Gala . The first was a custom Maison Margiela couture dress he created specifically for her.

A Fitting Literary Inspiration: In 1962, J.G. Ballard published “The Garden of Time,” a short story about aristocrats overrun by “an immense rabble.” It was a fitting but ironic choice as this year’s  dress-code theme .

The Body Spectacle: The night saw Kim Kardashian engaged in a kind of body modification  via extreme corseting. While Tyla, the South African singer and songwriter, appeared coated in sand .

Arrests and Protests: As expected, protesters gathered near the Met Gala to protest the war in Gaza, creating an atmosphere far different  from the one inside the event.

The ‘Naked’ Trend: What better way to distinguish oneself  from hundreds of well-dressed competitors than to wear almost nothing at all?

A Night of Firsts: Here’s the story behind Rebecca Ferguson’s sequin, bird-covered dress , Da’Vine Joy Randolph’s all-denim look , Pamela Anderson’s new incarnation , Christian Cowan and Sam Smith’s debut as a couple , and Amanda Seyfried’s semi-recycled look .
