A Dream Come True; Ben Rector and Cody Fry with the Colorado Symphony

A beautiful auditorium sits in the center, and a big stage for one of the best orchestras in the Midwest sits there. All of the instrumentalists were warming up, and then everything went silent. The crowd goes wild, cheering and clapping. Ben Rector and Cody Fry walk onto the stage with Wilber Lin, the conductor. Taking their places, Cody on the grand piano and Ben on the guitar, the music begins.

I have enjoyed music by Cody Fry since 2020 and Ben Rector since 2023 respectively. One of my best friends, Piper, introduced me to Cody Fry, who has been a fan. The song that captured my heart was “Sailboat,” a duet with Fry and Rector (which was an original piece by Rector). This song made an impact on me and my heart. It talks about life, sometimes we are stuck and aren’t moving. There is no better way to describe that feeling than a sailboat. In the past 4 years since I started listening to this song, there have been many times I have felt like a sailboat.

I enjoy listening to both artists; they have unique music, and that’s what I love about them. The difference between my favorite artists and artists like Taylor Swift or Harry Styles is that they don’t tour. I would be searching for shows in Kansas City, but they never visit Kansas. Until October 2023, I found that Cody Fry and Ben Rector were performing in Denver, Colorado, on my birthday on Feb. 2, 2024. I invited Piper to go with me so we could experience this together. My mom got us tickets to the show, and I was ecstatic!

Feb. 2 rolled around, and we were in Denver preparing for the concert. We walked to the Boettcher Concert Hall in the Denver Performing Arts Center. When we were inside the venue, the excitement was setting in. When we took our seats, the adults around us were not matching our energy. The people to our right enjoyed listening to Ben Rector and would be singing along to the songs. Meanwhile, the people to our left were very serious and acted like regulars to the symphony, probably not Cody Fry and Ben Rector fans. 

When the concert started, everyone was getting antsy and couldn’t sit still, maybe that was just Piper and me. The excitement that the 2 performers showed fed the audience. Though we couldn’t see them very well, we could tell in their movements that they were so happy to be there and perform for us. Being old friends, Rector and Fry express so much chemistry, and their voices beautifully mesh together.

Cody Fry blew us away. He sang some of his most popular songs: Flying, Photograph/Clair de Lune, Waltz for Sweatpants, Underground, I Hear a Symphony and What If. All of the songs were beautifully executed. The symphony added so much to the music since Fry is a symphony artist. I only heard his songs on Spotify, but hearing them in person was different; Fry’s voice was angelic. I would close my eyes and imagine I was fourteen again, new to his music, unknowing how much of an impact it made on me. Then, I opened my eyes and realized I had made it. I am here. 

Ben Rector sang “Let the Good Times Roll,” “Forever Like That,” “When I’m With You,” “The Mean That Drive Me Places,” “Loving You Is Easy,” “30,000 Feet,” and “Brand New.” Though new to his songs, I have enjoyed listening to Ben Rector every second. The first album I listened to by Rector was Live from Atlanta . From that album, my favorite song is “30,000 Feet”. There is something about it that makes me feel at peace. In the live version, joining Rector was a saxophone soloist named David Besonen, who delivered a fabulous solo in “30,000 Feet” during the bridge. Before Rector began to sing, he took a moment and said, “Welcome David Besonen to the stage.” I lost it. Besonen’s solo was phenomenal, and I couldn’t believe I could hear it live. During the song I was losing it, full-out tears. I’m pretty sure the people next to me thought I was crazy.

Rector and Fry sat side by side on the grand piano and played Iconic Duo, a song that sums up their friendship. The last song they sang was “Sailboat,” it felt so surreal sitting in the auditorium and listening to the song I have loved for years. Through the screaming, laughing, smiling, and crying, I am so thankful that Piper and I experienced this concert together.

I fulfilled my dream, but that does not mean I don’t want to see them again.

Cody Fry Shares New Single “Sailboat”

Cody Fry has announced his new record The Symphony Sessions will be released on January 21, 2022. The recent success of his song “I Hear A Symphony” on TikTok, which has propelled its streams to well over 55 million on Spotify and counting, has earned Fry the luxury to choose his own creative path, and the result is The Symphony Sessions. The six-song album was recorded with an 80-piece orchestra, and includes fully arranged originals as well as covers of The Beatles’ “ Eleanor Rigby ,”, which has amassed over 2 million streams in just two weeks since being shared on TikTok, and Ben Rector’s “Sailboat,” a song which served as a joint encore on Fry and Rector’s recent tour.   Today, Fry and Rector share their new version of “Sailboat” along with the live performance video filmed at Ocean Way Studios, a beautiful 100-year-old grey stone church in Nashville.   Watch “Sailboat” featuring Ben Rector HERE

“This is a song Ben and I used to perform every night when I was touring in his band,” says Fry. “I’d always wondered what it would sound like with a full orchestra, but I don’t have to wonder anymore!”   When his Old Friends Acoustic Tour with Rector was cancelled after just four shows due to the pandemic, Fry retreated to his Nashville home, took the occasional work-for-hire production job, finished up his album Pictures of Mountains (which came out earlier this year) and monitored his Spotify streams. It was there he began noticing unusual activity on “I Hear a Symphony,” the 14th and final track on his 2017 album Flying, recorded with a full orchestra, its streams climbing incrementally, eventually hitting a peak of 400,000 streams per day on Spotify alone.   Fry is a singer-songwriter-composer-arranger with five albums under his belt, starting with his 2012 debut, audio:cinema – a perfect description of the idiosyncratic, wide-screen, romantic movie-score approach he takes on “I Hear a Symphony” and “Photograph” (from Pictures of Mountains). Going down the internet rabbit hole, he discovered some comments on his YouTube videos that led him to TikTok, where “I Hear a Symphony” had been adopted, first by a K-Pop fan community, then by anime aficionados, who used the song in their video montages – more than 45,000 of them, representing millions of streams. Unfortunately, Fry only received a check from TikTok for a grand total of $150 so far for the video usage, but that activity spurred his four-year-old Flying album to garner upwards of 50 million streams and counting.   All the songs were recorded live in a single day, including several of the lead vocals, with a 80-piece orchestra, including strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion. “When a session is structured in this way, it doesn’t leave much room for error, but luckily the musicians were incredible, and everything turned out better than I could have imagined,” says Cody. “It was a stressful, nerve-wracking, joyful, rewarding experience. I hope I get to continue making more music like this.”   The album also features songs reimagined from Fry’s back catalog like audio:cinema’s  “Underground” and “Stop Breathing” (a song he originally recorded as a duet with his now-wife Haley); a new song, “More Than the Day Before” and instrumental interlude, “Caves.” Cody is also posting two live videos of him performing both “I Hear a Symphony” and “Photograph” before a full orchestra.   “I’ve run the gamut of emotions, from confusion to thunderstruck excitement to the fear of how long will this last?” admits the Chicago-raised Fry, following in the footsteps of his father, Gary Fry, a successful commercial jingle writer turned symphonic composer who writes for orchestras around the world, and conducts on his son’s two live videos. “This has totally changed my life. It’s allowed me to say no to things I don’t want to do and be able to pursue what I do.”   Although major record labels came calling following his viral success, Cody has decided to remain independent for the time being. “I didn’t feel right about the offers,” he says. “I wanted to see what I could do on my own now that I can support myself this way. Even though record companies can add tremendous value, it was too tantalizing for me to be able to make the music I wanted, without any outside interference.”   The Symphony Sessions is just that, and Cody hopes it can continue to open doors, with visions of taking his orchestral approach to the Hollywood Bowl and Carnegie Hall, or even on a tour where he plays with local orchestras at each city. “I think the most amazing things humans do are the things that we do together in large groups,” he says. “When else in music do you have 60 people in the same room all working together to make the same piece of art simultaneously? There is an energy that only happens in that setting.”

The performance features Jerry Garcia performing with friend, mentor and legendary keyboardist/vocalist Merl Saunders. The duo is joined by drummer Bill Vitt and bassist John Kahn, who soon became a lifelong Garcia collaborator.
