Cape Coral Yacht Club’s 60th anniversary marked with gala — and a look back

By cj haddad - | jun 14, 2022.

As you walked through the Cape Coral Yacht Club doors Friday night, you were transported back in time.

Classic music of a bygone decade blared while the dance floor was packed with tie-dye, tassels, and groovy moves.

It was a special occasion. The Yacht Club was celebrating its 60th anniversary on the exact weekend it opened in 1962. And the city’s oldest and most historic venue got a proper bash.

Tales of yesteryear were told and the night was capped off with a special presentation of Waltzing Waters: a spectacular synchronized water and light show that was a major Cape attraction in the early years of the city. The event was put on by the Cape Coral Museum of History and sponsored by The Gunterberg Charitable Foundation.

“I got so much pleasure meeting people who came to celebrate our 60th anniversary,” said Cape Coral Councilmember Gloria Tate, who also serves as president of the museum’s board. “People who just moved here within the last few years were especially interested in our history. The medallions (each attendee received) were so special as they captured the essence of the building. Celebrating with so many wonderful residents was a memory I will cherish as I leave my political career.”

Fellow city Councilmember Tom Hayden opened the evening talking about the origins of the Yacht Club and the variety of uses the venue provided over the years. He spoke with long-time Cape residents and they told their version of what they remember. It was a time to reflect on six decades.

“It was fantastic to see the community come together to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the Cape Coral Yacht Club,” said museum Executive Director Janel Trull. “The stories shared by some of our earliest residents were touching and really drove home the point that Cape Coral was built not just as a residential development but as a true community.”

Museum board member and long-time Cape resident, Linda Biondi, who played a major role in organizing the event, said: “Over the last 30 years, we’ve had many celebrations in the Yacht Club Ballroom. So, there are lots of fond memories. As for why it’s a special place; the Yacht Club itself as well as the ballroom is part of the history of Cape Coral. Our city has a habit of not preserving its history and for me, this is one of the last jewels.”

After some stories were swapped, it was time to hit the dance floor. Tunes that topped the charts six decades ago still rang true as attendees boogied the night away. Good eats were provided by Mission BBQ and the museum was showcasing its custom T-shirts for the anniversary.

“The food was delicious, the music was fun to dance to, and there was so much history discussed,” Trull said. “Everyone seemed to have a wonderful time. One person even told me that they got much more out of the event than they thought they would. I hope everyone left with a better understanding of the importance of the Yacht Club to the community and a renewed passion for the history of Cape Coral in general.”

At 9 p.m. at the Yacht Club pool, a special treat awaited. Keeping with the theme of the ’60s, Waltzing Waters showed its stuff to classic hits and artists, dancing and dazzling along the way.

Tate has always been a strong supporter of Waltzing Waters and its history in the city dating back to founders Leonard and Jack Rosen.

“My passion is the Waltzing Waters (Liquid Fireworks) ‘I have a dream: The Waterfront Wonderland Park’ located at the old Golf Course, with the Waltzing Waters in the middle, lots of green space, a small cottage style hotel and a Rose Garden,” she said.

The Cape Coral Yacht & Racquet Club is one of the oldest original amenities still standing in the Cape. It has been used as a community gathering spot for the past 60 years and is a location near and dear to so many of Cape Coral’s residents. Trull said the museum had already planned to do a 60th anniversary exhibition on both the Yacht Club and the Teen Club in the fall of 2022. As she researched, Trull noted the Yacht Club facility opened the weekend of June 9 – 10, 1962 with a full weekend of activities, culminating with a barbecue dinner and dance. Much like they had on Friday.

So, what’s next for the venue? Its future is still up in the air.

“I don’t know what will become of the Yacht Club,” Tate said. “I have high hope the next council will continue to have the vision of a great park featuring a beach for all, and boat ramps for anyone who wants to enjoy our waters. I would hope that the integrity of the building remains as a place where people can gather for many occasions. I also hope the fountain will always be there as a source of inspiration, a source of peaceful waters, and in many ways a miniature form of what our Waltzing Waters were.”

Biondi added, “It’s great that we’re going to expand the beach. The seawalls need to be redone in the yacht basin. The sad thing is that it seems that Yacht Club Ballroom will be taken down rather that renovated. I find that once again we cannot save history.

“It’s also upsetting that we are going to put a parking garage. I would hope that we would be able to add more parking spaces by reworking the spaces. Perhaps move the tennis courts to another location and that space would add a lot of parking spaces? For me, it’s the ambiance of the area.”

Whatever may come, the museum will always strive to preserve the building’s history.

“The Museum tells the story of the Yacht Club as part of its guided tour and showcases several artifacts from the early days in a permanent exhibit,” Trull said. “This fall, the museum will be curating a more in-depth temporary exhibition on the Yacht Club and Teen Center (now the Rotino Center) which will showcase additional items, photographs and more.”

Cape Coral's premier historic gemstone, The Yacht Club, will be gone by the end of May

Cape Coral began demolition of the main Yacht Club buildings this week, starting the work to bring down one of the city's oldest structures.

"Demolition is anticipated to take about a month and a half – it should be done around the end of May," said Cape Coral Spokesperson Kaitlyn Mullen.

The city will demolish the main buildings and attached amenities of the Yacht Club, including the ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and harbormaster.

Here's what we know:

Yacht Club demolition takes down one building already

On Wednesday, the city announced the long-anticipated demolition of the main Yacht Club buildings.

By the end of the day, the Tony Rotino Senior Center, which, before Hurricane Ian, had offered programs and activities for individuals 50 and older since 1977 , had been pulled down.

Johnson-Laux Construction, a full-service construction management firm that operates out of Winter Garden, has been contracted to demolish and deconstruct the Yacht Club for $987,716.04.

The firm is also tasked with  preserving a portion  of the old ballroom building, which includes interior ceiling beams, stonework, a fountain, and interior doors.

Construction will  not affect the beach area.

Recent Cape Coral news Cape Coral to vote on moratoriums as a former mayor warns of possible legal ramification

The iconic Cape Coral Yacht Club has a storied history

Cape Coral's  Yacht Club Community Park , which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s, built and open just a few years after the city's inception in 1957 by brothers Jack and Leonard Rosen .

In 2018, voters approved a $60 million expansion of the city's parks and amenities through the Parks and Recreation General Obligation (GO) Bond. Part of that was intended for the Yacht Club.

The Cape Coral City Council originally planned to close and begin work on renovations for the park in 2021 .

But then Hurricane Ian struck the city on Sep. 28, 2022, delaying the project with the council eventually opting to revamp the whole area, with the city pointing toward the high cost of repairs and being over FEMA's 50% rule as justification for moving forward.

Longtime residents and former city officials such as former councilmember Gloria Tate and former mayor Joe Mazurkiewicz opposed the plans.

They tried to save the Yacht Club's main building, the ballroom — one of the city's oldest structures — however, they could not sway the council to change its mind on the new plans.

The  current plans  include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new resort-style pool.

Previous discussions estimate the cost of the project to be as much as $100 million .

When will the new Cape Coral Yacht Club be finished?

The city is still in the design phase and has no estimated timeframe for completion.

What's next for the new Yacht Club?

A public meeting to review and showcase current Yacht Club designs will be held on May 7.

"The design team will present the design plans to any members of the public who attend," Mullen said. "People can ask questions one-on-one of the design team and staff after the presentation."

The Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach is now open: Officials and residents rejoice.

Cape Coral officially reopens the Yacht Club Community Park beach on Saturday, more than a year after Hurricane Ian shuttered the park, and residents are already taking advantage of it.

"This is a great day for our community," Mayor John Gunter said Thursday on the beach.

'Four hundred and eight days ago, we had an (almost) category five hurricane hit this area, and this area of our city was the hardest hit."

Kids and their parents will play together in the sand, while older residents lounge and soak up the sun once again at the reopened Cape Coral Beach.

Margie and Jerry Wright, two 70-year-old South Cape Coral residents, were sitting on their beach chairs on the sand, taking in the atmosphere of the hot day as they used to do pre-Ian.

"I've been going back three or four times a week," Wright said "Not having it was terrible."

Background on opening

Hurricane Ian struck Cape Coral on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying renovation plans for the Yacht Club Community Park and shutting down the beach.

Since that time, the city worked toward reopening the area and moving forward with the Yacht Club Master Plan. They experienced permit delays from the Army Corps of Engineers.

"We would have liked to have had this beach open many months ago, but only in the last few weeks, have we gotten the permit to do the beach renourishment.

What work was done at the beach?

Cape Coral announced it received the corps' OK to move forward on Oct. 30 and began the process.

Gunter and Councilmember Bill Steinke said the next day dump trucks carrying sand rolled into the area.

The following days were filled with heavy machinery combing through the beach and adding sand in areas that were lacking.

'"Like the mayor, said literally the sand was ready to be brought in the moment that we got the okay to do that," Steinke said.

What's open at the Yacht Club park?

While the main Yacht Club Ballroom building is closed, alongside the surrounding buildings and amenities, The Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill Restaurant is open.

The surrounding parking lots are open, and temporary bathrooms are available to beachgoers.

The Boat Ramp remains closed.

What's next for the Yacht Club?

The city council discussed and gave direction for major overhauls to the future designs of the Yacht Club buildings and layout.

Steinke also added that the city is still awaiting permits from the Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for the marine-related improvements.

"As soon as that permit is available, we are ready to go to work and get those get that seawall done and get the docks put in so everybody can enjoy everything that they possibly can as soon as they possibly can, and then all the amenities will come next," Steinke said.

Demolition kicked off on Wednesday, April 10.

The yacht club buildings were some of the first ever built in Cape Coral.

Take a look at what architects pitch for a redesigned Cape Coral Yacht Club

N ew details, photos, and a video have emerged on the proposed changes to the Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park, changing it from an Old Florida feel to a 'Key West' vibe.

The city plans to present these updates on the Yacht Club at this week's committee of the whole meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday in council chambers at 1015 Cultural Park Blvd.

Here's what we know.

Yacht Club changes explained

But then Hurricane Ian struck the city on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying the project with the council eventually opting to revamp the whole area, with the city pointing toward the  high cost of repairs and being over FEMA's 50% rule  as justification for moving forward with new buildings and amenities.

Longtime residents and former city officials opposed the plans - however, they could not sway the council to change its mind on the new plans.

What's featured in the new Yacht Club?

The  current plans  include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new 14,500-square-foot resort-style pool.

Current parking at the park; including for boats, vehicles, and boat trailers, amounts to 551 total spaces.

The proposed changes would bring a four-story garage with approximately 685 parking spaces, 15 surface spaces at the main building, 46 boat trailers, and 158 boat slip spaces - totaling 904 parking spaces.

The new two-story community center would have 47,000 square feet and include a new ballroom, concession, history room, exterior balcony, storage and meeting space, and a multi-purpose hall.

Previous discussions estimate the cost of the project to be as much  as $100 million .

Demolition has begun

Cape Coral has already begun the work toward these changes as demolition started this month.

The city will demolish the main buildings and attached amenities of the Yacht Club, including the ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and harbormaster.

What's next? When's the completion?

A public meeting to review and showcase current Yacht Club designs will be held on May 7.

The city is still in the design phase and has no estimated timeframe for completion.

Cape Coral is planning massive changes to The Yacht Club community park, which will have a "Key West" vibe, two story community center, larger pool, and four-story parking structure.

Cape Coral's Yacht Club Beach is open, how will renovations affect its availability?

where is cape coral yacht club

Now that the Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach is reopened, how will surrounding construction hinder access to the sand and waves?

City Manager Michael Ilczyszyn said the city has come up with a plan to keep the area open when they start demolishing the Yacht Club facilities.

Hurricane Ian battered the Southwest Florida coast on Sept. 28, 2022, particularly slamming into the Yacht Club property, closing all the facilities for months. The area slowly is reopening, with the Boathouse restaurant reopening in July and the beach officially opening on Saturday.

"So we think we've got it positioned strategically where we can do that work and allow the residents and tourists to still come here and enjoy the beach," Ilczyszyn said.

Here's what we know:

Cape Coral Yacht Club renovations explained

The city had planned  in early 2022 to close the park for two years  for renovations that included replacing the seawalls and marina wet slips, replacing the harbormaster building and boat ramp, and building a three-story parking garage and beach restrooms. The beach would also be expanded, and utilities relocated.

Then Hurricane Ian struck, delaying plans, and shuttering the beach for more than a year.

During their January winter retreat, Cape Coral Council Members decided to take a "clean slate" approach to renovate the facilities, which included demolition of all the facilities.

Demolition of the main Yacht Club buildings

The buildings that will be demolished include the main ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and harbormaster.

"Our plan is either the end of December or beginning of January to start demolishing the buildings and all the additional site work that is still left but in disrepair," Ilczyszyn said.

Cape Coral's solution

Ilczyszyn said the city will leave up the fence around the Yacht Club's facilities and have the contractors staged behind them and away from the beach and its parking.

He said the parking by the harbormaster, parking near the Tony Rotino Center, and the rest of the spaces behind the Yacht Club building will be used by crews and unavailable to the public.

"There's going to (be construction-sized waste bins) and we're going to need the ability for tractor trailers that come in and haul that stuff away," Ilczyszyn said.

The parking spaces near the beach and The Boathouse restaurant will still be available for use, as well as the overflow parking near the entrance of the park.

"So we believe between this parking and all the parking up here, there'll be enough, we'll see how it goes," Ilczyszyn said. "If we need to make adjustments, we will do that."
